Here are some things to think about if you are offered, or need, support during this time.
Try to use existing and trusted community groups. If not, could a family member, friend or neighbour who you know and trust help?
Not sure? Don’t answer the door.
If you’re not sure about an offer of help, ask the person to leave details and talk to someone you trust about it.

In truth I feel I have a duty to always be positive and a duty to communicate important information to you free. I have spent almost 10 years putting information through your doors, in fact I estimated about 1.7 million magazines to date, along with other literature. Eden FM, your Community Radio is there on 107.5 FM also free to everyone. In these simple terms, this is our magazine of Hope, created by your Local Community Radio Station to get vital information out to those that need vital numbers and key contacts to call should they need to during this period, and whilst many of our readers may not be ‘online’ and on ‘social media’, importantly you should never feel you are alone.
people in need of urgent help. In the same release, it confirmed that there were 2,442 texts set out on Friday morning (17th April) and 4,500 letters were in the post, on their way to vulnerable people in the county, which should now have been delivered. In the event that you have not received this information, the number is 0800 783 1966 and there is an email: COVID19support@cumbria.gov.uk On this occasion, as a small magazine of ‘Hope’, whilst it may not reach as many as we would have hoped, if you know someone who should have a copy, please let us know and will get one to them. This small magazine has been funded by donations and not advertisers. Our thanks to our key funders - Penrith Town Council, Eden District Council, Butterworth’s Solicitors and Cumbrian Local Publications. And thank you to some of our regular advertisers who have also kindly donated for a placement.
We all have concerns since our world changed ‘locally’ in March. I wanted so much to get this information out 4 weeks ago, but much of what I have collated here didn’t exist then and there was a lot of confusion mixed with priorities, so timescales were very much dictated as to when things could be done safely. We had two days in which to get a magazine from an idea into a reality. At this time now, I believe we are working back to some sort of normality in our changed routines, and lives will never be the same. This magazine has been packed by machine and opened only with gloves for distribution. Eden FM as a community radio is on 24 hours a day every day. It has set up presenters working from home, in Penrith, the Eden Valley, Carlisle and other areas of Cumbria, and utilises links and supporting shows and news via volunteers across the UK and the world. We can even remotely install and train new presenters, enabling them to log on to a system which enables them to do regular shows. Via mobile phone, I am one of a number of voluntary presenters who can update news regularly, instantly or every hour if required. As a matter of Health and Safety, our studios have always had high standards, sanitizers, wipes and set hygiene rules, so the Eden FM team has continued in its studios during the pandemic with social distancing and frequency of visits to the Studios. In a press release dated 17th April, it confirmed that Cumbria County Council’s Emergency Support Helpline, launched on Monday 30th March 2020, had already helped over 3,000 vulnerable or isolated
In these unprecedented times, myself Nigel, and the staff look forward to opening our doors again in the near future and resuming our normal business, Best wishes to all Tim Scott, Director N Arnison & Sons Ltd 3
Inside this 16 page publication will be a 24 page A5 booklet on Mental Health and Covid-19 - 'Looking after yourselves and others'. This has been funded through CNTW – Cumbria Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Trust. If you know anyone who may need a copy, please let us know.
message or letter. For so many years of my life, in my work I have spent many hours with teams and coached individuals on how we manage change and how it affects us. We are so different from each other and any change affects us in different ways subject to many circumstances.
We have some positive stories and information. My thanks to a lot people for helping me pull this magazine together, and a special thank you to Peter for the back page, which with this magazine is dedicated to those front line staff in the NHS and those service organisations working to keep us safe and keeping our county and country running.
In the situation we are in, we have experienced shock and denial, but as we adapt and accept the situation, much of which is out of our control, we will come through and manage the change we have had to deal with.
As I do when I write, I always share a bit of my life or experience with you, and at this time it is no different. On 21st March I sat with my nan and told her that I didn’t know when I would be able to sit with her again and give her a big hug again in a long time. Nan is 95, close to 96 and for more than 10 years, more so since we moved her close by. I see her every week, and as her mobility has become less, we have adapted, but I can’t make her hearing any better or her eyes, but I can make her feel safe and wanted. Since that Saturday, I now deliver her shopping to the entrance of where she lives in independent living accommodation with other residents. We can’t talk on the phone, but sometimes I get a wave and I blow her a kiss from the car park as by chance she’s looking out of her window. I class myself as very lucky that I can do this, and as a family we have been writing to friends and posting letters and cards because we know what it’s like and what a boost it can be for a small price to get a nice hand written Follow us on Facebook for additional stories and give us a LIKE
I’ll be at Eden FM most days. If you need to get a message out in the community, please drop me a line at lee@edenfm.co.uk or give me a call on 01768 862394. I’ll be back in May. Take care out there and stay safe. Lee Chairman & Director Eden FM Radio Ltd

COVID-19 SUPPORT AND HELP FOR PENRITH RESIDENTS While the Council Office is closed to the public, Council staff are still working but from home where possible in line with government guidelines. There is currently a lot of work going on to coordinate local volunteers to help support vulnerable people with basic needs such as shopping and prescription collections. Thank you everyone who has been helping. We are encouraging people to activate a support network in the first instance with neighbours, friends and relatives. Making contact with somebody nearby is your best source of support. We are also able to offer those without a support network some services, and we have linked with volunteers, agencies and organisations throughout the community who want to help during this time of national crisis. We are working with Fell Runner, with our local churches, local businesses, Eden District Council and Cumbria County Council to provide support. We have donated to Penrith Foodbank and are in contact with other groups in Penrith and Eden who are working in partnership to keep vital services running where they are needed most. “I'm very pleased that even during such challenging times, Penrith Town Council is able to assist in delivering vital aid to the people of the town. I'd like to thank all the officers who have worked so hard to achieve this.” Cllr. Lawson Mayor of Penrith. From Monday 20 April, if you are over 70, vulnerable or shielding and your need is NOT urgent but it is important and you need some assistance and you do not have any support locally, Penrith Town Council volunteers are able to help you. Do you need help with a pre-paid food or prescription collection or just a chat? Please call 01768 899773, Monday to Sunday 6
between 10am and 2pm and we will ask one of our volunteers to contact you. If you are over 70, vulnerable shielding and you do not have family, friends or neighbours to help you and you need help urgently please call the emergency helpline 0800 783 1966 As the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation progresses, there are many questions and concerns about how the necessary government measures will affect us all and there is more and more advice. We update our website regularly. There you can find details of how to volunteer, how to find help and advice. We publish weekly, a list of businesses that are still open, delivering food and drink locally, those offering takeaways for collection and delivery as well as which local retailers are operating online, telephone shopping and click and collect service. This list is provided by the Chamber of Trade and is also available on Penrith Chamber of Trade website and the weekly Cumbria Council Covid-19 Directory. Please let us know if you are a business and would like to be included in the listing. Just go to www. penrithtowncouncil.co.uk and go to the Media and Communication section, News-Covid-19 page. In current times, we all need to be there for each other and over the coming weeks as the crisis is forecast to peak, community will be essential. If you haven’t done so already, please check in with your five nearest neighbours, give them your number, make sure you have theirs and know that they can call you if you are needed. Councillor Jackson, Deputy Mayor, “In these uncertain times there is much we have to bear but we don’t have to do so alone. I hope everyone knows that if they need support they can find it at the town council.”

Eden District Council’s message to residents: we’re here to help This is a challenging time for all of us in Eden; whether it’s the people in our communities affected by illness or those working round the clock on the front line to save lives, keep us safe and keep our communities functioning. We thank you for your efforts. Thanks are also due to everyone observing the guidance to stay at home. We know it’s not easy, especially for those caring for children, the elderly and the vulnerable. Whether you’re living alone, caring for others, or frustrated at being unable to visit loved ones, we pay tribute to you and to everyone who is playing their part in our collective effort to respond to COVID-19.
and food producers, and the many volunteers who have mobilised to support those in need. You are the glue that binds our community together. We also thank our own staff who continue to work tirelessly, often in difficult circumstances, to maintain the services we rely on. We all have our part to play in the current situation and as your District Council, we are determined to play ours. Whether that’s providing the services you depend on, supporting our most vulnerable, or helping businesses to continue. We’re here to help. Yours faithfully,
We know that our community is our strength. From the essential shop and factory workers, to our farmers

Businesses urged to apply for grants
The Council is urging businesses to check their eligibility for the latter grant, as eligibility criteria has recently been widened.
In response to COVID-19, the UK Government is supporting businesses. So far over £14m in grants has been distributed in Eden, with over 1500 businesses registering for support online at www.eden.gov.uk.
Shops which sells goods or services, or offers items for hire;
Food and drink establishments like restaurants, takeaways, bars or pubs;
Entertainment establishments like cinemas, theatres, bingo halls or live music venues;
Premises in which people assemble, such as village halls or markets;
Sport or leisure facilities, like gyms, sports grounds or spas;
Hospitality properties, including hotels, guest houses, holiday homes, caravan parks and selfcatering accommodation;
Some others are also eligible, such as and estate agents, stately homes and show rooms.
However, Eden Council is urging businesses to check their eligibility, as there are a number of qualifying businesses that have not yet applied. Government support takes the form of two schemes. The Small Business Grant Fund offers £10,000 to businesses receiving small business/rural rates relief. The Grant for Retail, Hospitality and Leisure is broken down into two tiers. £10,000 is available to businesses with a property of a rateable value up to £15,000. £25,000 is available to businesses with property of a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000. Businesses can register for either of these grants online at www.eden.gov.uk.
Businesses can check if they are eligible at www.eden.gov.uk. Those eligible include:

You can also report domestic violence safely and anonymously at www.notinmyhome.co.uk. Eden District Council is part of the Cumbria Together We Can network, a social media campaign to bring together positive stories from around Eden and beyond. We’re asking our creative young people in Eden to show support for our dedicated frontline services by drawing a picture of them at work - whether that be collecting bins in their trucks, or cutting grass on a ride-on mower. Please share these pictures with our teams by placing them in your windows, so our staff can see them, or share them with us on Facebook!

The weekly 7.30 am Friday Blessings from Penrith’s Beacon Edge are now accessible through WhatsApp and the Penrith OpShop prayers are happening weekly, along with other church prayer groups - albeit via Zoom, with folk joining in at home. However, not everyone has access to the internet and so it’s great that our local radio station, Eden FM (107.5 FM or Online) has agreed to feature a Thought For The Day every Sunday at around 7.30 am and a half-hour Sunday Service, led by local church leaders, at 10 am every week. It is hoped these will continue beyond the current situation.

Thus, despite the challenges of coronavirus, there remains much to be thankful for. Have you noticed the number of rainbow pictures appearing in many living-room windows in recent weeks? The rainbow is a symbol of hope, which we read about in the Bible. Following the flood God promised Noah never to repeat such an action again and He provided a rainbow as a sign of His promise - not just to Noah but also to us. So, whenever you see a rainbow – be it the majestic arch of bright colours streaming across the sky or those adorning many windows in our community, remember that God will keep His promises in spite of hardship, trials, persecution or any other life altering circumstances – so vividly demonstrated in the events of the first Easter, giving us a hope and a future.

The Fellrunner
The Fellrunner Bus service has served the rural community in Eden for over forty years bringing people from over 50 different villages into Penrith and Carlisle to access shops and other services. Following the introduction of the Covid 19 restrictions the bus services have been suspended but the volunteers are still trying to help people in the area. Instead of taking people to the shopping the Fellrunner volunteers are taking shopping to the people. Fellrunner have placed two of their buses and a dozen volunteers at the disposal of the local authorities. Cumbria County Council then refer persons who need shopping done, prescriptions collected or similar services to Fellrunner who organise for volunteers to perform the shop and drop service. The service is available throughout Eden. Volunteers use the Fellrunner buses, their own cars or even bicycles to deliver the goods and correct social distancing is employed at point of delivery to minimise any risks of infection. The Fellrunner secretary, Neil Hannah said, “We are keen to help anyone in our community in need of supplies of food or medicines and are making regular deliveries to a number of persons. Anyone who wants to use the service should call the council helpline on 0800 783 1966, as they are able to identify the best way to get supplies to people. If the council refer people on to us we will respond promptly and contact the individuals directly to get their shopping list and then deliver the goods to them. Payment can be by bank transfer or by cash on delivery. If you can’t get t do your shopping, we will try and your shopping to you.” In the last few days Fellrunner have also started to support a further service offered by the Penrith Town Council. Fellrunner will deliver goods purchased by the town council on behalf of persons needing assistance and pre paid by them. The Mayor of Penrith, Cllr Lawson said, “I am delighted to be working in close partnership with the Fellrunner Village Bus, to provide this essential service to our Town. We thank all volunteers and key workers who working hard and making a difference during these unprecedented times” 14

Let’s keep going! By Emily Quinn
my university work and keep wondering how I’m even going to get it all done in time. I know my sister has also found it very stressful trying to do her Sixth Form work with minimal support. We all just need to keep in contact and look forward to what will be when this is all over.
Firstly, I’d like to start by thanking everyone involved in supporting our country during these difficult times. Thank you to the people alone during this time, who are staying home even though they may feel lonely, and those caretakers in hospitals keeping on top of things under the radar; as well as NHS staff, care workers and supermarket workers; YOU are all appreciated. It has been a strange few weeks for us in the UK and across the world. This is something I have never witnessed in my lifetime and I hope I will never have to again. We’ve been living in a ghost town with shops and their empty shelves, but we’ve come this far, and we will get through it. Although we may lose or have already lost people dear to us along the way, I am sure we will be known in years to come as the generation that pulled together and got through it. Living with my family has not been nearly as difficult as I expected. I thought my sister and I would have come to blows at this stage! I’ve seen more of my family since the start of this pandemic than I have in the last 21 years. CONS: we have to stay inside, at the start we couldn’t buy toilet roll and everyone is affected by this in some way. PROS: we are spending priceless time with our loved ones which we maybe wouldn’t have done originally, we are reaching out to one another and communicating, and we have proved to ourselves as a country that we can change and adapt and make even one of the biggest challenges the country has ever faced, work. I’ve seen many of my friends and family express themselves in
new ways and teach themselves new things. Much like so many others, I have started doing out of the box ‘kinda things’, such as that mystical thing they call physical exercise, and it’s actually alright! Well, I haven’t kield over yet, maybe nearly though. There is also that TikTok thing which is a rather interesting concept. It seems a lot of people are having a bit of fun with ridiculous dancing and impressions. With all this time for those of you stuck at home, why not try baking something edible (I say edible as I have to remind myself what happened when I tried to bake, and what not to do if I’m going to try again!) Oh, and try not to burn the house down. Or if you fancy something less dangerous, sunbathing in the garden is fun, or if you don’t have that facility, playing a game with housemates or your family is fun, (monopoly is not advised as it can cause arguments, unless you’re not competitive, then it’s safe!) Everyone has different worries and stresses whirling around in their heads at the moment. I for one am really struggling with getting motivated to do
We’ve taken a hard hit and it has not been easy, but we have stayed together and therefore saved each other in doing so. It’s okay to miss your friends, boyfriend, girlfriend, grandparents, parents, children, great grandchildren and so on, but just because you miss them and you feel lonely, doesn’t mean you are on your own. In a community like ours, with kindness around the corner, no one is alone. Thank you to everyone for being so strong and unselfish. Hopefully the next time I’m writing an article it will be about how we’ve come through this and become an even stronger community and people because of it. You’re not on your own in this difficult time. I’ll leave you with a few ideas - if you find yourself lost for ideas: read a book, learn to draw, learn to bake, do a jigsaw, clean those dirty (no longer) white trainers, get that pile of ironing done, play a game, make a game, walk a dog (only if you have a dog, please do not try to put your husband or your child on a lead), do some meditation, learn a new language, facetime your childhood friend you haven’t spoken to in 5 years, have a hot bubbly bath with some candles on, write down the things you’re going to do when this is all over, try eat new things and do new things you’ve never done before.
