Good evening and a warm welcome to our visitors, Seaham Red Star, our match sponsors, the Penrith Lions and to all those who have made the journey here today. Thank you to Jim, his staff and the team for giving Karl Collinson something to write about in the Match report page 10. Whilst it was a crowd of 108, there were a lot of happy faces on Saturday when the lads took the game to Guisborough Town 3 – 0 up in the first 25 minutes. With us having more players returning tonight, let’s hope the crowd is jumping for joy again tonight. Our opponents tonight in their last two league visits to Frenchfield Park, have taken a point on each visit with two 1 – 1 results. With 7 matches played, two of these have been away for Seaham Red Star with one win at Team Northumbria 2 – 3 and a draw at Washington 1 -1. They are currently 10 places above us in the table (p24). A reminder that we are away Saturday in the 1st Rd of the FA Vase at Esh Winning. The draw for Rd 2 is Tow Law Town or Crook Town away in case you were wondering? It was pleasing to pick up the first points of the season on Saturday against Guisborough. I thought we tried to play with more tempo and put Guisborough under more pressure from the beginning of the game. It wasn’t the most fluent of performances but we had to find a way to win and we did that. All the players involved stood up to the test and did exactly what was asked of them. i though Dean Rea was outstanding and has been since he returned to the club to help us out and cover holidays. Hopefully Dean can be persuaded to stay longer term. Tonight will be a tough test against a much improved Seaham side. They carry a lot of threats in forwards positions and come off the back of an excellent win against Morpeth at the weekend. Seaham have started the season well and we must ake sure that we compete, as we did at the weekend. Grant Davidson returns to the squad tonight which is a big plus as we are inexperienced at this level. Seaham Red Star History
Welcome to the Visitors
Seaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed. A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs. Much of the credit for the Club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the Club’s first Manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and, after a promising first season, made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974. After a further five fairly successful seasons, the Club felt sufficiently confident to join the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, the Club winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 1981-82. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division and , after some near misses, eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season. Bryan Mayhew took over as Chairman of the Club in 1986 and, with able support from former Secretaries, Harry Hobson and John McBeth and a small hardworking committee – in particular Reg Atkinson, Dave Copeland, Jim Ferguson and John Smith – the Club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken fourteen seasons. Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 1992-3 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000. Mayhew was also a prime mover in getting the League to join the National Pyramid, calling the Special General Meeting of clubs which eventually led to the historic decision being made. Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the Club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the Club’s resignation from the League. However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil’s achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year.
However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scotish International George Herd put together a side that won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006/07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw yet another change in management with former Darlington player Andy Toman taking over. Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation. The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in the Red Star history with the team involved in relegation battles which could have seen the club relegated to the Wearside League, both battles were successful and the club retained it’s Northern League status. In 2012 the club appointed Mark Collingwood and Simon Johnson, who achieved great success in the Northern Alliance League with Hebburn Reyrolle. They brought the nucleolus of the side from their previous club and have added experience and quality into what may well be a team that could challenge for honours. Steady improvement over the past four season’s have produced a 10th place finish in 2012/13 and 4th place in 2013/14, missing out on promotion by 1 point. The 2nd division championship was won in 2014/15 and last season we finished a creditable 9th place in a very tough First Divison. After only 9 games of the 2016/17 season Colly left the club to go to Jarrow Roofing FC. Chris McCabe was promoted to manager and promptly brought in Paul Johnson as his co-manager. A good run of results had the Star placed comfortably in the upper half of the table, however only one win from the last 12 games saw the Star end the season in 15th spot. Previous managers in the Club’s history include Northern League legend Paul Walker, in conjunction with the long serving Chris Copeland; former Hartlepool Manager, Billy Horner; and ex Burnley player, Harry Wilson. Former players going on to join Football League clubs include Nigel Gleghorn (Ipswich and Manchester City), Bobby Davison (Halifax, Derby and Leeds) and Stephen Harper (currently with Newcastle United). Tommy Henderson remains the Club’s leading goalscorer, netting 211 goals in 276 appearances including a record breaking 62 in 1978-9.

KEEPERS JORDAN HARKESS : Previous Clubs Sunderland RCA, Silksworth CW. Young keeper that joined in the close season. Attributes are his size, strength and agility. Commands the penalty area very well and regular turns defence into attack with great distribution. DEFENCE JOSH KING Developed at the Sunderland Foundation Academy. Young full back with blistering pace and strong tackling skills. Loves to get forward and support attacks. DAVID SCORER : Previous Clubs : South Shields, Consett Dunston. The Star finally got their man after chasing David for years, Quality centre back that reads the game well and is outstanding in the air. KEIRAN GALBRAITH: Former Red Star Youth player. Represented England U18 Schools. Able to play anywhere across the back four and has potential to go further in the game. Keiran became a regular in the Red Star eleven last season. TOM PRICE: Young left back who has joined the club in 2016, quick, energetic and a local talent. Tom has developed into one of the best defenders around and is always keen to join in attacks. BRADLEY STAUNCH : Aquired from Consett. Centre Back released by Carlisle after pick ing up a serious injury. Now getting back to his best. Strong and powerful, good in the air also has good ball skills ANDY BROWN : Joined the Star following spells with Sunderland RCA, South Shields and West Auckland. Very adaptable, happy to p[lay in defence or midfield. Strong tackler and quality passer of the ball. ARRON THOMPSON Another that has come through the Foundation Academy. Has proved he can play in any defensive role including midfield. Good ball skills and strong in the air. MIDFIELD NICKY KANE : Previous Clubs Dunston, Newcastle Benfield: Very energetic midfielder that covers all the field. Great ball skills, strength and determination. Will assist the attack at every opportunity and weighs in with plenty of goals. LIAM HODGSON : Previous Clubs Easington. Seaham lad that’s gained Northern League experience with Easington. Tireless worker in midfield, strong tackler and good passer of the ball. CRAIG LYNCH: Sunderland, Blyth Spartans Durham City. Former Sunderland starlet that has fit into a midfield role here with ease. Very pacey and clever on the ball. Craig has become a fans favourite here at Seaham. LEE HETHERINGTON: 2016 signing following his release from Middlebrough FC. Lee has already shown glimses of skill that will ensure that he will become a favourite with Seaham fans. Lee can play in the midfield area as well as behind the main striker.
MIDFIELD ANDREW JOHNSTON: Promoted from the Reserve side last season Andy has adapted to the Northern league quickly. A strong energetic midfielder who adds pace ariel strength to the midfield LEE CHAPMAN Now in his second stint at the Star having moved from Ryhope CW. Talented ball player released by Sunderland AFC. Likes to play out wide where he can trick his way past defenders LUKE BAILEY. Youngster that developed well at the Sunderland Foundation Academy. Also signed for Spennymoor. A strong ball winning midfielder with good passing skills. AARON CROFT recently acquired from neighbours Easington Colliery. Aaron returns to the Star for his second spell. Now firmly establisjhed in the Northern league as a no nonsense tough tackling midfielder. STRIKERS ROBBIE BIRD: Previous Clubs: Crook, Whitley Bay. Robbie returns to the Star following a very good season at Hillheads. Terrific striker with pace, skills and an eye for goal. LIAM McBRYDE recently returned from a spell with Sunderland RCA, former leading scorer at the Red Star. Very good at leading the line, hold up play is excellent and has a very good goal per game ratio. ASH DAVIS former Blyth Spartans striker that joined the Star in the summer. Tall striker who is very good in the air. Very pacey and great strike rate. A real asset for the Star JOINT MANAGER CHRIS McCABE : Previous Clubs : Hartlepool United, Blyth Spartans, Nissan, Shildon A former youth player at the Star, Chris was a well established Northern League player, captained Shildon and now returned to his home town club for a third spell. Stepped up from Assistant Manager role in September and made a great start. JOINT MANAGER: PAUL JOHNSTON : Very experienced in managing in the Northern League. previous clubs include Team Northumbria, Jarrow Roofing and Whitley Bay. Former Newcastle Academy coach joined Seaham as Co manager in December 2016

The Bonny Blues recorded their first league victory thanks to 3 quick fire goals past a sluggish Guisborough outfit. It took only 4 minutes for Chris Wraighte to mesmerise 2 defenders on the left wing and pull the ball back to Jamie Street who cut inside the box and unleashed a left foot shot which found the far bottom corner. The visitors’ came close when they were awarded a free kick 40 yards out and Lewis Maloney expertly struck the ball and it smashed into the crossbar but the visiting striker couldn’t control his header into the gaping goal. It was the impressive Wraighte again who received the ball out wide, got past his defender with a step over and drilled the ball across goal where top scorer Jonny Murray slid in to add the final touch. The 3rd goal soon came as Robbie Hebson swung in a left footed corner and Dean Rae leapt like a salmon to nod the ball home from 8 yards. Penrith should have gone in at the break 4 up after the visiting ‘keeper made a real mess of a short back pass and Jamie Street squared the ball to Hebson but he screwed his shot wide. The 2nd half started with Guisborough enjoying large periods of possession without creating any real chances as Ben France © the make shift back 4 of Penrith were keeping them at bay. Jonny Murray showed some quick feet on half way which the visitors could only foul him as he tried to beat his third opponent.Chris Wraighte played a telling ball down the right flank to Murray from the resulting free kick, Murray again skipped past 2 helpless defenders and squared the ball to the penalty spot where Jamie Street flicked the ball home for his second of the game. Penrith seemed to relax after that and let Guisborough enjoy plenty of possession which only resulted in a couple of long range efforts which found goalkeeper Stuart Dixon continuing in his impressive early season form. The visitors were handed the chance to get on the scoresheet when the referee pointed to the spot, to the dismay of the Frenchfield Park crowd. Steele stepped up and calmly side footed the ball into the corner giving Dixon no chance. Penrith played the rest of the game on the counter attack as both wide men, Wraighte and Hebson, looked dangerous every time they recieved the ball. It was almost a perfect afternoon’s work for Jim Nichols’ men as local boy Brandon Robertson also made his debut for the Bonny Blues. With captain Grant Davidson and Tyler Bowman retuning from holiday, Nichols expects his team to start climbing the Northern League Division 1 table as he’s able to pick more of a settled side in the upcoming fixtures.

More FA Cup success for Blues PENRITH Town maintained their 100 per cent. start to the season with an FA Cup win at Winsford United. The Blues’ 3-1 victory, achieved with two goals from Barry Irving and one from Will Paul, earned them a trip to South Yorkshire side Dinnington Town next Saturday in the first qualifying round of the competition. “The lads are playing well, are full of confidence and working hard for each other,” said Penrith manager Dave Heslop. “Five wins out of five matches is a magnificent start to the season and a tribute to their hard work.” In goal for the Blues on Saturday was Craig Summersgill. He answered an SOS from Heslop, who found himself without the suspended James Holland and unavailable Nigel Mc-Combie and Andrew Wills.Summersgill, released by Working-ton Reds on the eve of the new season, put in a solid display at Winsford. So, too, did central defenders Paul Pattinson and Gary Milne, who were standing in for regular pair Phil Thornton and Wayne Robertson. “They came in and their performances were of a standard that the lads weren’t missed,” said Heslop, After netting £500 in prizemoney following their earlier FA Cup win at Squires Gate, Penrith picked up £1,000 after their success in Cheshire. A further £2,250 is on offer should they prevail at Dinnington, who play in the Northern Counties East League Division I. After winning three games out of three in Northern League Division II, Penrith are in action this afternoon when they host Guisborough Town at the World Group Stadium. “It will be a good test for us,” said Heslop of a team who have also made an unbeaten start to the campaign. On Tuesday, the Blues travel to Hebburn Town for a first round Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup tie. WINSFORD UTD. 1, PENRITH TOWN 3 Penrith took the lead after just six minutes as a long throw from Craig Wilson caused panic in the home defence. Will Paul took advantage and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Michael Langley. Ryan Errington almost made it 2-0 within 60 seconds but his effort flew just past the upright. However, the visitors doubled their lead on 10 minutes as tall striker Barry Irving headed into the bottom corner of the net.
Just before half-time, Winsford’s John Bluck hit a powerful shot but Penrith goalkeeper Craig Summers-gill, making his debut, blocked the effort. Will Paul went close with a curling shot from 20 yards after the interval before full back David Lynn’s effort from further out was saved by Langley. It was just past the hour when Penrith scored a third, Martin Strong finding Irving and he forced the ball home from close range. With 10 minutes remaining and central defender Gary Milne off the field receiving treatment for a rib injury, Winsford scored a consolation through Les Miranda. Penrith: Summersgill, Lynn, Jones, Pattinson, Milne, Paul, Wilson, Strong (Frampton 68), Irving, Errington (Hodgson 74), Lea. Subs not used: Broadley, Prokas, Blaylock. Striker Michael Reed, who left Penrith to join Workington Reds during the summer, returned to pick up two awards as the Blues held a sportsman’s dinner on Saturday. Reed was named players’ player of the year and picked up the prize for top goalscorer. Paul Pattinson won the manager’s player of the year award, while the manager’s clubman accolade went to Phil Thornton. Goalkeeper James Holland was the committee’s player of the year, with Mark Jones making most appearances last season.

First of all. May I say a BIG Thankyou to all involved in surprising me with the presentation marking my 50 year involvement with the club. As you can imagine there have been many ups and downs, Hundreds of players, quite a few Managers, many different characters on which I hope to be able to comment on through this column over the coming season. It has not been the best league start after a promising pre season which made all involved OPTIMISTIC at a chance of improving on previous seasons. We no doubt set off well with an outstanding performance to defeat West Auckland in the FA cup, West pulled themselves together and now rightfully top the League. Saturdays win was a much needed 3 points and hopefully a confidence booster for Jim Nichols and the whole squad… It is early days, however, losing Martyn Colemans goals will present a big challenge in our efforts to protect the best standard of football we can at Frenchfield Park. Many of our supporters will be aware of the challenge of competing with clubs whose budgets far outweigh what we have to offer, there is a certain pride in kicking above our weight. However, the truth is several new teams are now representing the club at all ages and both genders, the club once again enjoys being Community Club of the year. A few defeats will never get the club or its officials down, in fact it only strengthens the resolve to make the Town of Penrith proud of its Football Club. As I mentioned earlier I hope to be able to stir a few memories over the coming months and we’ll certainly be looking to Jim Nichols and his players to give there everything in making this a season the club and themselves can look back on with pride knowing they could have given no more. Penrith Reserves 2 v 1 Windermere SC Football Club A great result for the lads on Saturday; a big 3 pts which takes them from 10th to 6th place. With top of the league Keswick to play after this report is printed, we can’t predict but it will be the toughest match of the season so far. With Ambleside United at home at the weekend and the Academy taking on the reserves away, let’s hope it’s a double.

FA Cup Progress for Penrith AFC Ladies Penrith AFC Ladies 4-2 South Park Rangers Penrith AFC Ladies progressed to the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Womens Cup with victory over a gritty SouthPark team. The Teeside based team started brightly and did not allow Penrith to settle. They took an early lead in the 15th minutes with a strike from distance. This only spurred Penrith into action and they levelled when Nat Broad fired after good passing play in the build up. Penrith gradually started to dominate possession and took the lead in the 41st min when Charlotte Smith headed home from a corner. HT 2-1 Early in the 2nd half Penrith extended their lead when Nat Broad’s shot rebounded of the post but Sarah Smith was first to react and poked the ball home. Penrith made the result safe in the 81st minute when Livvy Johnston’s cross rebounded off the cross bar and Broad hammered home the loose ball.

Penrith AFC Panthers U13s 2 Carlisle City U13s 1 Panthers hosted a strong Carlisle City side in a pre season friendly at Frenchfield on Saturday morning in almost perfect conditions for football. The match got off to a frantic pace as City pushed forward but Panthers back 4 of Dargue, Forster, Fleming and Wright looked solid and organised. Midway through the half Panthers won the ball back and Jake Ferguson played a great defence splitting ball through for Callum Wills who expertly chipped the ball into the roof of the net. Carlisle City looked for the equaliser but struggled to break down a resolute Panthers team and found goalkeeper Harvey Reay in commanding form.They went in at the break level after City won a corner and Panthers fell asleep as the ball went in off the backside of the visiting player. A very disappointing goal to concede but after half time the Panthers were determined to make amends. It was a very tight game with both teams tackling well and giving 100%. Panthers were impressively playing the ball out from the back and making the most of the wide players in Harrison and Jackson. With 15 minutes to go Panthers were reduced to playing the rest of the match with 10 men as Jackson picked up an injury and due to holidays, had no substitutes. Minutes later though Harvey Reay took a free kick which sailed over the City defence and Leo calmly volleyed the ball past the out coming keeper. City had one last chance to level the game as they played some good passing football and eventually got in behind the Panthers but Harvey Reay came flying out to superbly save the day.McKenzie Fleming was superb at centre back for the Panthers as it was a fantastic performance where both sides played great football and credit to Carlisle City who never gave up and the game was played in great spirit.
