Good evening and a warm welcome to our visitors, Newcastle Benfield travelling fans in the 160 mile round trip and to all those who have made the journey to the Frenchfield park Stadium tonight. A good result at the weekend for the bonny Blues means another round in the FA Vase and another fixture. Lots of updates on this so I’ll just say that the up to date fixtures including the FA Vase 2nd Round Qualifying and Cumberland Cup 2nd Round are on page 26 which shows the fixtures through to the end of December. I’m looking forward to the home match on Boxing Day already! Congratulations to our visitors who this weekend play at home to Ashton United FC in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round, their opponents currently 15th in the EVO-STIK Premier Division. Meanwhile, the Bonny Blues take on a real test away to league leaders Marske United who on 16pts at the top of the league are unbeaten.

Last week against a good Seaham side, I thought we were a little unfortunate. The scoreline certainly flattered them as we chased the game to try and get an equaliser late on. In the first half we were a little flat and struggled to get in to the game and Seaham deservedly took the lead. After that we had good chances through Chris Wraighte and Elliot Bousfield but we didn’t really make the goalkeeper work. Unfortunately for ourselves, this was to be the story of the night as we squandered good opportunities and as we were forced to take more risks at the back, it opened us up to the counter attack and we conceded twice in the last ten minutes. On Saturday we started our FA Vase adventure for the season. It’s always tough going away from home to lower league opposition as it’s a big opportunity for them to cause an upset. I thought we started the game brightly and deserved to take the lead through Shaun Gardner. At the start of the second half we had 2 or 3 glorious opportunities to close the game out, not taking them. This caused us to deal with a lot of pressure in the second half without really being threatened. Adam Main scored the winner late on and we now travel to Tow Law in the next round. We are working hard to add to the squad, particularly in forward areas, and will keep pressing on with this. Lee Quinn ©

Newcastle Benfield F.C. HISTORY The origins of the club can be traced back to 1988 when, as a result of the Northern Alliance league expanding to three divisions; the club competed as Brunswick Village in the Second Division for just one season.
Welcome to the Visitors
Changing the club’s name to Heaton Corner House also brought about a change in fortunes as the club transformed themselves from the previous season’s 10th place finish by storming to the Second Division championship in 1989/90. The club moved to its current ground at Sam Smith’s Sports Ground on Benfield Road, and again changed its name to Benfield Park. Following a couple of near misses in the race to gain promotion to the Premier Division, the club succeeded at the third time of asking before stunning the Premier Division big boys by claiming a League and Challenge Cup double at the first attempt at the end of the 1994/95 campaign. That success wasn’t built upon and the club suffered a few seasons in the doldrums, before an approach by local rivals North Shields St. Columba’s gave the club additional momentum at the turn of the millennium. Having managed to persuade Allan Bell to take the manager’s job just weeks after he had led Walker Central to the Northern Alliance title, Benfield’s second Northern Alliance title was achieved in 2002/03 and this fine achievement was heightened by the club’s acceptance into the Northern League for the first time in the club’s history. Allan Bell left the club before the start of the Northern League adventure, but his replacement Keith Sheardown started brilliantly, leading the club to immediate promotion into the First Division after a final day 9-0 demolition of Willington, but Nissan’s victory over main rivals Ashington was erased from the record books as the had fielded an ineligible player. Ashington won the replayed fixture and took the title, leaving Benfield to settle for second place. Expectations were for a season of consolidation in the club’s first season in the Northern League Division One, but no-one seemed to have told the players as they led the table for the first six months of the season before falling away and finishing a magnificent fourth. Benfield have since then enjoyed a successful and unbroken tenure in the First Division. Former Hartlepool United striker Paul Baker replaced Sheardown in September 2005 and was still at the helm when the club lifted their first Northern League honour, the League Cup, in May 2007, having beaten Nissan 1-0 at Federation Park, Dunston, courtesy of a magnificent Alu Bangura goal. Baker enjoyed particular success in FA competitions, leading the club to their then best performance in the FA Vase in 2006 and a year later reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, narrowly losing 1-0 to York City in front of 927 fans, a ground record. Undoubtedly, the club’s finest season came in 2008/09 when under Tom Wade, the club enjoyed an incredible run of form in the second half of the season to shoot up the league from a mid-table position to win the title on the final day of the season, thanks to an 88th minute winner by Stephen Young in the final game to be played at Penrith’s Southend Road ground. Newcastle Benfield had never been top of the table in the whole season, until Young’s winning strike. That success was doubled when victory in the League Cup, ironically also against Penrith, was assured by a breath-taking Ian Graham goal, though all those who were present would agree that keeper Andrew Grainger’s performance was perhaps the finest individual display by a Benfield player during the club’s time in the Northern League.
Wade left before the start of the following season, with Baker returning and winning the Cleator Cup, the Northern League’s equivalent of the Charity Shield, in his first game back in charge. The club were unable to repeat their Championship winning form and had to settle for fifth place, which was followed by fourth place in 2010/11. The highlight of that latter season was a third League Cup victory for the club, over Spennymoor United at Dunston, where that man Andrew Grainger was the start of the show, saving a penalty and making several world-class saves as 10-man Benfield prevailed 3-1 after extra time. Paul Baker resigned for the second time in September 2011, to be replaced by former player, captain and assistant manager Alu Bangura. Sadly the club legend’s time in the hot seat was a short one and he resigned six months later, to be replaced by Perry Briggs as the club limped to a disappointing finish in the league. Briggs himself left the club in the late autumn of 2012, to be replaced by former North Shields manager Anthony Woodhouse. Despite an encouraging 3-0 victory away to Sunderland RCA in Woodhouse’s first game in charge, results did not improve noticeably and he quit the job, citing work pressures, in early 2013. For the second season running, Benfield had the distinction of three managers in a season, this time seeing former Bedlington Terriers player Steve Bowey assuming the top job, but combining it with a playing role. The end of the 2012/13 season saw Benfield avoid relegation by a narrow margin, having won away in the last league game played at Consett’s venerable Belle Vue ground. This was even more impressive as the fixture was played twice, as the lights failed with less than 15 minutes remaining in the first game, when a Benfield victory would have assured safety. The club made their fourth appearance in the League Cup final, ironically in the last ever game to be played at Belle Vue, but came up short against Spennymoor United, despite a battling performance. For 2013/14, Bowey’s side put in some impressive league performances, including a superb 7-0 victory away to Bedlington Terriers, but ultimately ended up finishing in 14th place. The real focus for the season was the FA Vase, where a series of excellent results, including victory away to eventual Northern League Champions Spennymoor United at their Brewery Field ground, put the club into the quarter finals of this national competition for the first time. Sadly this is where the story ended with a 1-0 defeat to Leicestershire side St. Andrew’s ending the dream of a Wembley appearance. Tragically, club founder Danny Gates passed away in November 2013. No-one who has ever attended a Benfield game will ever underestimate the contribution of Danny to the history and development of the club. He will never be forgotten. At the end of the season manager Steve Bowey tendered his resignation and was replaced by Neil Saxton, who in turn left in October to be replaced by the returning Bowey., with the club languishing near the foot of the table. Despite disappointingly early exits in all cup competitions, including a demoralising 2-1 loss away to Chadderton in the FA Vase, Bowey’s return galvanised the club’s league form. The last 14 games saw Benfield win 11 and draw 1 to top the form table, finishing 10th in the real version. This was helped by Northern League Player of the Season Paul Brayson weighing in with 49 goals in all competitions. With a settled squad, including some quality additions, the signs were hopeful for 2015/2016 at Sam Smith’s Park. However, after a difficult run of results, Bowey tendered his resignation at the end of October. The club acted to appoint Mark Convery and Paul Brayson as joint player managers in November 2015. After safety was assured, with a paper-thin squad, the club opted for stability by retaining them as managers for the 2016/2017 season, which saw some encouraging performances in the league, with a 10th place finish in Division 1 securing the club’s status as Newcastle’s leading non-league side. The aim for 2017/2018 is further progress in the league and some tangible success in the cups.

FA Vase First Round Qualifying Esh Winning 0 Penrith AFC 2 A goal in each half from Shaun Gardner and Adam Main sealed the Bonny Blues passage into the first round of the FA Vase. It was a potential banana skin away to Division 2 opponents but Jim Nichols’ men put in a professional performance which sees us travel to Tow Law Town on Saturday 23rd September. Goalkeeper Stuart Dixon put in another towering performance to keep his first clean sheet of the season and veteran defender, Will Paul was a rock at the heart of the defence. First of all I would like to send best wishes to a couple of people who aren’t well, Alan Woof ,committee member and supporter, Rory Robinson ex 70s player and supporter. Both of these lads are having a rough time. Best Wishes from everyone, Players, Committee and Supporters. A welcome win at Esh Winning sees us into the next round of the vase when we are drawn away to Tow Law, my former club of 50 years ago, I joined them after three seasons at Darlington. Good memories of good people, probably the highlight was a 5 nil home win against Mansfield Town in the FA Cup. The club now have a close working relationship with Carlisle Utd. They are using Frenchfield Park for several Matches this season. Unfortunately in their second game here on Saturday the heavens opened resulting in some damage to our new playing surface which will require some intense work to get fit for tonight’s game. It is hoped this arrangement will result in being of great benefit to us. Great results also for Reserves and Academy, the club owes a big thank you to Matt Rogers for resuming the academy managerial duties. Matt ably assisted by Bob Norman worked tirelessly to form our Academy, setting up two coaches at this early stage of the season, having found the job to be too demanding. I know Jim Nichols is disappointed with the start to his first full managerial season. The majority of the squad are also inexperienced at Northern League level. Things can change with one result. Penrith on FA Cup glory trail Penrith warmed up for today’s FA Cup clash with old rivals Blyth Spartans by winning two league matches in the space of four days. Blyth, former colleagues of the Cumbrians in their old Northern League days, visit Southend Road today in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup — a competition in which they built up a giant-killing reputation in the early 1980s. The sides last met in the 1981-1982 season — the season of Penrith’s own FA Cup shock when they defeated Chester. They played three games that year, two in the league and one in a cup competition and honours were even. Penrith won one, lost one and drew the other when a Keith Sawyers goal enabled them to share the points in an entertaining Easter clash. Brent Hetherington is the only survivor from that Penrith team likely to play today. Hetherington and fellow striker Tony Fyfe could meet up with a former colleague from their days at Carlisle United. Ex-Carlisle skipper Nigel Saddington now plays for Blyth after a spell with Gateshead. In the event of today’s tie ending in a draw, the replay would be next Tuesday meaning that Penrith’s scheduled league trip to Bamber Bridge would have to be rearranged. Penrith go into today’s match full of confidence after two wins in the league, both by a margin of the odd goal in three, against Blackpool Rovers and Maine Road.

The visitors suffered a setback in the 18th minute when two defenders went for the same high ball and clashed heads. They both needed stitches and were replaced by the two allowed substitutes. All the goal action came late in the game. Substitute Steve Hindson, on the field for only three minutes, fired Penrith in front after 67 minutes with a vicious low shot from a free kick more than twenty yards out. Maine Road were back on level terms in the 74th minute when Chris Simms netted, but Penrith put together a strong finish. Skipper Tony Monaghan, who had a goal disallowed in the dying minutes, fired in the winner in the last seconds. Penrith players cautioned were Phizacklea, Ridley, Cranston and Gate. It’s been a very busy few weeks for our Academy & Reserve sides with midweek and weekend games which always kicks the season off but is challenging as other sports seasons such as Cricket are coming to an end. Our Reserves had a difficult start to the season with quite a lot of key players missing due to Holidays, injury and as I’ve mentioned earlier other team sports. They lost their first two games but have steadied the ship and have only lost 1 in the last 5 games which puts them in a healthy 3rd place in division 1. Our Academy have had a very tough time but had a fantastic opening day result with a 2-3 victory over 3rd div title favourites Kirkby Stephen. Since then however they have been putting in some good performances but have not had the rub of the green. They have also had key players missing and unfortunately have had yet another manager in Andrew Richardson stepping down due to other commitments. To bring stability to our Academy set up I (Matt Rogers) have stepped back into the role and I am now Academy Manager for this season. I plan to try and continue in the role the club asked me to do originally this season also with regards to player development and we’ll see how that goes. Bob Norman is continuing as Academy Coach so the dream team so to speak of last season are back together. The lads returned to winning ways in their last outing beating Ambleside Utd Res 1-8 away with a very convincing performance and one that I was really pleased with. It was obvious their confidence had took a knock recently which is now returning and they currently sit mid table.
With regards to the role for player development it is going really well. All managers in the senior structure are communicating regularly to discuss players and squads and are exploring opportunities for players to step up to the next level. This will take time but it’s something that the whole club has brought into which is a real step forward. We all wish Jim and the lads the best of Luck tonight v Newcastle Benfield and I hope we get maximum points to start climbing the table. I have stated before now and to others in the club I believe Jim Nichols is the best gaffer we have had at Frenchfield Park for a long time so I really do wish him all the success he deserves. Penrith Ladies Development 10 – 1 The Development team started their season with a friendly against Lancashire Championship League side Galgate Ladies. The game started quickly with Penrith scoring with their first attack when Becca Alderson adding the finish from some quick passing. Alderson caused havoc in the Galgate throughout the game and would go on to add another 5 goals on the day. Other goals in the first half coming from Heather Fawkes and Chez Brierley. Hope Lawson and Chelsea Tracy sharing the in goal keeping duties throughout the game, both had little to do and were confident in their duties Half Time score 7-0. 3 further goals were added in the second half with Zoe Glendinning adding her name to the scorers list. Galgate added a consolation goal with the ball looping in to the top corner but it was Penrith’s day as they enjoyed an encouraging first run out. Penrith were initially frustrated by Preston’s disciplined defensive display. Penrith eventually broke the deadlock in the 18th minute. This seemed to help settle the team and Penrith raced to a 6-0 halftime lead. Penrith scored further goals in the 2nd half despite a dogged defensive display from Preston. The game eventually ended in a 9-0 win for Penrith with Andrea Lorenzi scoring the final goal in what was her final appearance for Penrith before she heads home to Italy. Other scorers were Nat Broad (5), Livvy Johnston, Charlotte Smith and Heather Fawkes. Nat Broad’s 5th goal of the day was her 100th for the club in what was her 97th appearance. Next Sunday Penrith AFC Ladies face a daunting trip to Norton Ladies in the SSE FA Womens Cup. Norton were the team that comfortably knocked Penrith out of the FA Cup last season.

Penrith AFC under 10’s had their 1st fixture of the season away to Cockermouth Real. The whole squad played very well against a very tough tacking Cockermouth team. Unfortunately we were beaten but our goalkeeper, Joe Cox, kept us in the game for long periods. Ollie Newton and Max Ruane playing in their 1st ever league games played very well. Penrith AFC U11s had a good start for us at 9v9 winning 5-2, both teams playing really good football. Penrith took the lead with a goal from Kyle Windle with a scorpion style kick. Then Castletown got back into the game with 2 goals either side of half time from their man of the match Lucas Iredale. We dug in and upped our work rate and goals came from James Mullet x2, Isaac Cutting and a goal from the half way line from Ollie Harrison which gave us a well earned win. Penrith AFC Wolves 2 - 4 Castletown Falcons An exciting and enjoyable opening game of the season, with the score poised at 2 - 3, Wolves had an excellent spell of pressure but couldn’t find the equalizing goal, then to be caught out on the break. Men of the Match: Joe Mortimer (Penrith) Jack Richardson (Castletown) Scorers: Luke Kemp 2 (Penrith) Ollie Rebanks, Ben Ellis, Ashton Hook & Morgan Goad. Castletown Rangers 0 Penrith Panthers 3 It was a thoroughly deserved victory for the Panthers with goals from Callum Wills, Leo Wallace and Mackenzie Fleming. Panthers dominated the game and should have really scored more but the Castletown goalkeeper in outstanding and some very weak finishing kept the scoreline down. Credit to Castletown, who never gave up and put some brilliant last ditch tackles in. Fleming and Owen Tomkinson were at the heart of everything for Panthers and Josh Harrison and Leo Wallace were delivering quality balls into the middle all game. Goalkeeper Harvey Reay will be expecting a lot tougher time next Sunday when the Panthers travel to Carlisle in the County Cup to take on Upperby. Penrith AFC U16s As a new group of lads joined together for the first league game of the season they where the brighter attacking team from the start! With a few unlucky misses we eventually broke through and went 1 up but the standard dropped from there onwards, conceding 4 very sloppy goals! We then claimed one back which was a 30 yarder from Liam Souter! The second half Penrith started the brighter with the stand out performer Danny Hall once again shining above, having shot after shot but to no prevail!
