Welcome to Frenchfield
Page 3
Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our visitors, Ryhope CW and to all those who have made the journey to the Frenchfield Park today. It seems a long time since the last match day programme and the home game against Newcastle Benfield on that rainy night. It’s one I will remember, not just the result, but the way the crowd got behind the team, the way the team just kept going and just dug in. A small crowd, a lot of noise, but a great performance, which to me just showed how good we can be, as a team and a club, because on the pitch and off the pitch it was a good night. We’re probably not going to get matches like that all the time. There are a lot of factors for and against, but the potential is there. It is today, every player knows it, everyone on the bench knows it and everyone in the home crowd knows it. It’s a belief and a will to win, so once again when that whistle blows at 3 o’clock, we all have to do our part for that 90 minutes and give it our all on and off the pitch.

It has been a disappointing few results since we last appeared at home. We travelled to Marske in good spirits after the win against Benfield and there was very little in the game. We conceded after half an hour but created chances unfortunately we couldn’t draw ourselves level and pushing for an equaliser, we conceded the second goal in injury time. We then travelled to Whitley Bay on the Tuesday and had an appalling start, 2 goals behind in 5 minutes. We then took control of the game and missed some gilt edged chances which we need to start putting away, I feel had we scored one we would have gone on to get something from the game. We followed this up with a poor performance at Tow Law in the vase. This was unacceptable and some strong words were said at full time and before training on Wednesday. We recognise the need to strengthen the squad, particularly in forward areas, having spoken to 34 forwards in recent weeks hopefully we can resolve this issue. We welcome Danny Eccles and Sam Graham to the team today and wish Cameron a speedy mend on the leg. Please continue to support, what is an inexperienced team as we look to improve our recent form. Welcome to the Visitors
The club was founded by the Coal Miners of Ryhope in 1892 but it was not until the 1927–28 season that we won our first Wearside League title. The club enjoyed most of its success in the 1960s, winning the Wearside League on four occasions, the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup twice as well as the Sunderland Shipowners Cup and the League Challenge Cup during the decade.
In the 1967–68 season the team reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the only time in the club’s history losing 1–0 at home to Workington. The next successful season was in 1977–78 when we finished 3rd in the league, winning the League Cup and the Durham Challenge Cup for the only time in our history. Between 1988 and 1992 the club was known as Vaux Ryhope after a merger with Sporting Club Vaux. In the 2009–10 season we won the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup for the first time in 44 years as well as finishing runners up in the Wearside league which was also our highest position in 44 years. However the 2010–11 season was the most successful in the club’s history. We won all four competitions: the Wearside League Title, Sunderland Shipowners Cup, Monkwearmouth Charity Cup and the League Cup. This was only the third time that any club had ever achieved this feat in the history of the Wearside League. Remarkably we repeated the feat again in the 2011–12 season winning all four competitions and gaining promotion to the Northern League for the first time in our history. We ended the season having only been defeated once in the last 70 Wearside League and Cup games. In our first season in the Northern League we finished second in Division Two and earned promotion to the first division. However our ground failed the Northern League Inspection and we were demoted back to the Wearside League after just one season. 2013/2014 we finished second in the Wearside League but we did pass the Northern League’s inspection in March and earned promotion straight back up. In our final game of the season we beat the Wearside League champions Stockton Town 2-0 in the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup Final. The season saw the club have three managerial departures but now Gary Pearson has been appointed as the new manager as we return to the Northern League. 2014/2015 we finshed in the top half of the 2nd division which allowed us entry into the fa cup for the 1st time in over 40 years.. 2015/2016 the club finished runners up in the northern league 2nd division and gained promotion to division one for the 1st in clubs 124 year history

The Management Team Manager - Gary Pearson
At 14 Gary was picked as one of the best 16 players in the Country to join the F.A. School of Excellence for two years and at 16 he signed a three year pro contract with Sheffield United. Injuries restricted his progress with Sheffield United and he then played for Gateshead, Seaham Red Star and Durham City before at 24, he signed pro forms for Darlington. He played there for three seasons before playing a season for York City. After the pro game Gary played for Durham City, Nissan as player coach, Spennymoor Town and then became player coach at Crook Town at the beginning of 2011/12 season before taking over as manager in December 2011. Gary also played Sunday Football for Birtley Barley Mow WMC and for the very successful Hetton Lyons CCFC. HE helped the Lyons to 3 FA Sunday Cups (2006, 08, 10) and 5 County Cups (2006, 07, 08, 09, 10). When Bradley Groves moved from manager to Chairman of the Lyons at the beginning of 2010/11 season, Gary became joint manager along with Stuart Gooden. After one season winning the League, Gary left leaving Stuart in sole charge so he could concentrate on Saturday football. When Gary took over at Crook he appointed Stuart as his assistant. In their first full season in charge Crook won Northern League Division 2 with over 100 points and the following season they consolidated Crook in Division 1. At the end of 2013/14 season with a lot of problems behind the scenes, Gary and Stuart felt they had taken Crook as far as they could and resigned wishing Crook every success for the future. After a meeting with Darren Norton the Ryhope CW Chairman, Gary and Stuart realised the ambitions of Darren and Ryhope CW. They had no hesitation of accepting the roles of manager and assistant manager.
Assistant manager - Stuart Gooden
As a player Stuart played for Birtley Town and Eppleton CW. He became player/manager in the 2001/02 season and he’s been in Northern League management since then. After Eppleton CW, Stuart was Neil Hixon`s Assistant at South Shields (Div 2), Durham City (Div 1) then Seaham Red Star (Div2 then winning promotion to Div 1). When Neil moved to take over at Sunderland RCA, Stuart stayed as manager of Seaham Red Star taking Seaham to finish 8th in Div1. The following season Stuart left Seaham to become Stuart Sherwood`s assistant at Chester-le-St (Div1) for three seasons. He then moved to become assistant manager at Shildon (Div 1), before joining up with Gary at Crook in December 2011. Then he moved with Gary to become assistant manager at Ryhope CW at the beginning of the 2014/15 season. Stuart also played Sunday Football for Birtley Barley Mow WMC and Hetton Lyons CCFC and became assistant manager of the Lyons in 2004/05 season. He helped them to three F.A Sunday Cups (2006, 08, 10) and five County Cups (2006, 07, 08, 09, 10). When Bradley Groves moved from Manager to Chairman of the Lyons at the beginning of 2010/11 season, Stuart and Gary became joint managers winning the League. The following season Gary left the Lyons leaving Stuart in sole charge where he is still the manager. In his first three seasons as Lyons Manager Stuart has won the F.A Sunday Cup (2012) and the County Cup (2014).
Goalkeeping Coach - Paul Pringle
Paul was a very experienced Northern League Goalkeeper playing for several Northern League clubs. Now he’s an excellent goalkeeper coach who’s worked with Hartlepool United, Nissan, Esh Winning, Hartlepool Town and now Crook Town. He’s joined up with Gary, Stu and Chris at Ryhope CW and Paul also continues to work with Middlesbrough FC academy goalkeepers.

Chairman - Billy’s Blog
Last Saturdays visit to Tow Law of course brought back many memories from my time there in the 60s. Probably the game that stands out for me was an FA Cup first round proper against Mansfield Town. Over 5000 supporters cheered the Lawyers on to a famous 5 - 1 win. Wonderful times among grass root supporters with players picking up a £5 bonus for their efforts. Penrith came to play in an end of season game against Tow Law when I played against Tow Law, they went on to play an evening fixture against West Auckland. I asked for a lift home as in those days I had no transport. Penrith suffered a couple of injuries so I was asked to play under the name of Jimmy Render. Older supporters may remember that name, of course this resulted in starting my time at Penrith. Little did I think in walking into the Ironworks ground the game would end as the same result for Tow Law. It really has been a difficult start to the season for all of us involved in trying to make a go of things. I have always been a believer that hard work and perseverance will reap its dividends. Replacing proven players is very difficult. Several players left to join Matt Henney at Gretna. A really big disappointment was the decision of Martyn Coleman to once again turn his back on the club. We as a club have done our utmost over several years to be supportive of Martyn, however it appears it counts for nothing. The team now is going through a rough patch and it is vital we, that is everyone with the club at heart Players, Supporters, Sponsors all unite in our efforts to turn the season round. Let’s hope that begins with todays game against Ryhope. C’mon you Blues GOOD LUCK LADS Billy

Saturday, 29th September, 1992 Penrith must get back to winning ways when they travel to Glossop North End today after a crushing 6-0 defeat at the hands of Bradford Park Avenue and a 4-3 defeat at Atherton on Tuesday after leading 3-0. Within five minutes, a further mistake in the home defence allowed Fyfe through to lob the ‘keeper making the score 3-0 to the Blues. In the closing minutes of the first half Whitfield mishandled a high cross which allowed Atherton’s Unsworth a simple tap-in. Within second, however, the Penrith keeper made up for his error with an excellent point-blank save. In the second half, Penrith were pinned back in their own half by the home side and Diamond pulled another goal back for Atherton. With fifteen minutes to go, Feeley latched on to a ball which was loosely cleared fro ta corner and drove the ball into the net to level the scores. Shortly after Reay replaced the injured Steven Ridley. In the dying minutes of the game Ian Milburn stopped a certain goal with the keeper beaten but as a result had to leave the field. The resulting penalty saw Diamond win the game for the home side. Penrith: Whitfield,Phizacklea, Ridley (Reay), Renwick, Frankland, Milburn, Hindson, Batey, Gate, Fyfe, Simpson. Sub: Monaghan.
Penrith 0, Bradford Park Avenue 6 The Blues were below strength, lacking the services of Tony Monaghan and Brent Hetherington, among others, but spectators were entitled to expect a far better performance than is suggested by the six-goal thrashing at the hands of Bradford Park Avenue, once of the football League. The visitors had a match-winner in Rohan Eli, a young striker whose devastating pace constantly posed problems for Penrith’s defenders. Up front, Penrith missed the finishing power of Hetherington. Gary Cox, in the Bradford goal, were seldom tested, although he did well to keep out first half shots by Hindson and Alan Batey, plus a second half effort by Simon Gate. The visitors had the boost of a second minute goal scored at close range by Pearson, but the sprightly Eli contributed a “hat-trick”, with one goal before the interval and two more midway through the second half. His turn of speed enabled him to run clear of markers and coolly take the ball round keeper Bellas. Eli also played a big part in the built-up for two late goals by Craig Taylor which tool the Bradford tally to six. There were flashes of good play by Penrith but this was a match which players, management and supporters will want to forget. Penrith: Bellas, Gardner (Phizacklea), Ridley, Renwick, Frankland, Reay, Cranston, Batey, Gate, Fyfe, Hindison (Milne).

Richard and his team proved to have a great deal of skill and expertise between them with a determined and creative approach to any unforeseen problems that arose. The new roof progressed smoothly and quickly despite the notorious Cumbrian weather. They were polite, friendly and considerate. they did a great job and they cleared up and whisked away the rubble afterwards. We can't praise them enough. Richard came and got the job done and saved us money. We had new lead valleys put in roof, not only did Richard beat every quote we got he also done a little extra work free of charge, would highly recommend

Sensational Coulthard Hat Trick Seals Victory Leigh RMI Ladies 0-5 Penrith AFC Ladies Penrith travelled to face Leigh without leading scorer Nat Broad who was unwell. They knew that early pace setters Leigh would be a stern test and wondered where their goals may come from. Penrith lined up with an inexperienced strike force with 16 year olds Olivia Johnston and Georgia Campbell joining 18 year old Sarah Smith in the front line. On a perfect playing surface at Leigh, Penrith were straight into their stride and were confidently passing the ball from player to player. Time and again they breached the Leigh defensive line and were creating a host of chances however they were lacking the c omposure to turn the chances into goals. Penrith eventually took a deserved lead on 22 mins when Hannah Coulthard exquisitely curled a free kick into the top corner from 25 yards. Penrith continued to create chances however a 2nd goal remained elusive. On the stroke of half time Penrith again prospered from a set piece when Coulthard headed home a Paige Williams corner.
Paul Smith Š
JP Smith Photography © Into the 2nd half Leigh came back at Penrith strongly and were playing with increased intensity and aggression. Penrith were pushed back and their defence stretched at times.

Having weathered the Leigh pressure Penrith made the game safe with a third goal that also rounded off Coulthard’s hat trick when she reacted quickly to a loose ball in the Leigh area. Now Penrith started to enjoy the game and pulled away with late goals from Livvy Johnston and Heather Fawkes. Penrith Panthers U13s 1 Castletown Athletic U14s 4 Frenchfield Park was the venue for a tough challenge for the Panthers against a very strong Castletown outfit. The game got off to a frantic pace with the away team winning the early exchanges but found Panthers goalkeeper Harvey Reay in outstanding form. Panthers started to find their feet and we’re playing some good football but couldn’t quite find the finishing touch. Wills, Wallace and Ferguson all found themselves through on goal after great through balls from Tomkinson and Harrison but the Athletic defence managed to get back and block the danger. Castletown eventually found their way past Reay, taking a 2 goal lead in at half time despite the Panthers rattling the post. Panthers brought on Dinsdale and Jackson at half time and it seemed to weigh the balance up in the midfield with Ferguson showing some superb touches also. Fleming and Forster were showing that they were more than a match for their older opponents in the Panthers defence with full backs Wright and Dargue pushing forward at every opportunity but could do nothing about a superb finish from Matt Stamper and a fourth soon followed for Castletown. Massive credit to the Panthers who never gave up and deservedly got their goal after a great ball down the right flank from the impressive Ben Dargue found Leo Wallace who got past his defender and cut the ball back across goal for Finlay Awde to tap home. Wallace could have had a goal for himself after he was put through on goal but the Castletown goalkeeper pulled off a good save. It was a really good game of football with both teams attacking at every opportunity.

Penrith AFC Under 10’s travelled to Keswick to play our 3rd league game looking for their 1st win of the season. With the whole team playing extremely well, we won comfortably. All 5 of our attacking players scoring at least once. It was an excellent performance against a very fair Keswick team. All 9 of the squad were contenders for Man of the Match. Penrith U16s took a very strong squad to Keswick with only two players missing, Fraser Nicholson and Ellis Hurst. We started the sharpest peppering their goal from the off but a badly marked throw in followed by a 30 yard strike caught us out as we went 1-0 down! Within 10 minutes we had levelled with a outstanding run from Liam Souter finishing off with a goal! But from there onwards it went down hill winning the possession game but not being clinical, a keeper error, a defensive error and a conceded penalty meant we were 4-1 down! With only 12 minutes to go we made some slight changes and within thirty seconds Danny Hall rattled the crossbar and pulled one back and the fight back started with goals coming from Connor Parkin and Connor Gregory! Fantastic character from the lads!! Man of the Match went to Kyle Strand, our keeper, with only one vital error he commanded the game. He’s definitely one to watch!

Penrith didn’t have everything their own way Allerdale testing the defence and Megan Chambers in goal. But central defender Jodie English had another outstanding game. Allerdale were very hard to break down and it took a great move for Penrith to score their second of the game. Starting from right back into midfield then a great ball into the right channel for Ellie to control and smash into the net from a tight angle. This was a real team effort and puts Penrith joint top of the league. Player of game went to Megan Chambers. Next week Penrith host Stanwix who are level with Penrith. 10 am Frenchfields. Should be a cracking game.

A goal in in either half sealed the win. Penrith attacking play was once again very good with Alice Wilkins leading the line. Alice getting herself on the score sheet after some great play on the right from Ellie Little.

After an opening season win over Carlisle City, Penrith continued their impressive start to the season with a home victory over Allerdale.
