A good afternoon and a warm welcome to our visitors from County Durham, Newton Aycliffe and to all those who have made the journey to the Frenchfield Park today.

Currently 18th in the league, they had a good point away last Saturday 1 – 1 to 7th place Consett, who they will play again midweek in the First Round of the Durham Challenge Cup. We have Consett at home here at Frenchfield next Saturday. It was great to see some goals here on Wednesday in our 4 – 0 win over a good Crown Newlaithes side in the Cumberland Cup. The goals coming from Moynan 8’, Shields 56’, Wraighte pen 74’ and Gardner 80’. So in to the last 16 we go along with Wetheriggs United and as anticipated Carlisle United will be playing Workington. We are scheduled to play Cockermouth away 4th November. It is a 1.30 kick off. They are currently 6th in the Cumberland Premier Division. Today as we all know, like many a head this is a tough one, but with a game now forming between the bottom three where are a 4 points off of 19th place in the League. Enjoy the match and have a safe journey home. Come on you Bonny Blues!!! Lee Quinn Programme Editor

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our visitors from Newton Aycliffe for today’s fixture. This will be the first team that we will have played twice and we are hopeful of a reversal of the result from the August bank holiday weekend. We were disappointing against Morpeth last time at home and some strong words were said to the players after the game. The desire and work rate was below what we require and the players were made aware of this. Against any team in this league, the bare minimum we require is work rate and desire and we failed to show that. We required a reaction on Monday away to Team Northumbria and I thought we dominated the game in large sections in very difficult conditions. We passed the ball well on a good surface and created a lot of chances but our quality in and around the edge of the box wasn’t good enough for us to convert our dominance in to a lead. On the stroke of halftime, we received a sucker punch, from our attacking free kick we were hit on the counter attack and found ourselves one nil down. The second half followed a similar pattern and we must learn that, when on top in games, we have to cash in or we will get punished.

Wednesday was a chance to look at some new players, as well as lads around the edge of the squad. I thought we were a bit lethargic first half and we demanded that we move the ball quicker in the second half and on another day, could have hit double figures. The positives were a clean sheet and progression to the next round. Jim Nicols Lee Quinn ©

Newton Aycliffe

Welcome to the Visitors

After the successes of the previous season 2016/2017 saw a major mid season upheaval. Joint managers Deano Browne & the returning Danny Mellanby joined in December and oversaw a complete rebuild of the squad in a short period of time. Given the wholesale changes finishing 9th in the league was a creditable result. 2015/2016 was quite simply the most successful season in Newton Aycliffe’s history. The highlight was winning the Durham Challenge Cup, but added to that we had our best ever runs in the FA Cup (2nd Qualifying Round Replay) & FA Vase (5th Round). We also had our highest finish in the Ebac Northern League (6th). Having smashed their way into the Start To Learn Northern League in emphatic fashion – winning back-to-back league titles; Durham Alliance (2007-08) and the Wearside League (2008-09) – Allan Oliver’s side built on their inaugural campaign at Northern League level by topping the table for a huge eight months as they finished seven points clear of their nearest rivals in the 2010-11 title race. Aycliffe, originally formed in 1965, had previously participated in the Wearside League of old before folding from it more than 20 years ago. And although the current club was re-formed a number of years ago, competing successfully in the Darlington & District League and its re-emergence in the past three seasons has been nothing short of both phenomenal and inspiring. The club’s development off the field has been as rapid as that on it, as Moore Lane Park was gradually transformed into a ground befitting the team’s status in the National League System. Of course, the club owes a lot to Sedgefield Council’s Local Improvement Programme and the Football Foundation for providing grants to afford the facilities but the football club are also indebted to the support received from Newton Aycliffe Sports Club who continue to be a massive backer and supporter of the clubs transformation. Seated accommodation was delivered in the spring of 2010 and after the assistance from local firm Finlay Structures and a team of volunteers dedicated to the club, standing accommodation for over 100 persons was also installed. Let’s Meet the Team James Winter Goal (Keeper) Former Hartlepool Utd keeper has been regular number 1 for the last two seasons & has produced some vital stops Aaron Brown (Defender) In his 4th season with Aycliffe. Although usually at right back the former West Auckland player also can play centre midfield. Was last season’s managers’ player of the year, having played 48 games. Andrew Grant-Soulsby (Defender) 31yr old centre-half, joined Aycliffe this summer from Chester-le-Street, having previous spells with Jarrow Roofing & Birtley. Dan Mitton (Defender) In his second spell with Aycliffe Dan has been reliable at the centre of the defence & was named Player of the Year for the 2016/2017 season. Continued on page 8

Paul Weldon (Defender) Former Darlington left sided defender, previously with Washington Scott Brassell 36yr old Newtonian playing for his hometown team after a spell at Washington. Is also assisting with coaching duties this year. Alan Harrison (Midfielder) Talented 19yr old from Hartlepool, joined Aycliffe towards the end of the 2014/2015 season. Marc Costello (Midfielder) Central midfielder joined from Washington towards the end of the 2016/2017 season, making 6 appearances & providing stability in the middle of the park. Sean Tarling (Midfielder) Former club skipper returned to his hometown club for the 2017/2018. The central midfielder has been with Bishop Auckland but was sidelined due to injury for much of last season. Craig Hutchinson (Forward) Exciting forward, joined Aycliffe in summer 2017 from Billingham Town. Was the Division Two leading scorer last season having hit the net 51 times. Josh Gray (Forward) 25yr old winger in his second spell at Aycliffe having played in our maiden First Division campaign in 2011/2012. Matty Pennal (Forward) Spennymoor-born 20yr old Sports Coach joined Aycliffe late in the 2016/2017 season & immediately impressed with his strength. Previous spells with Darlington, Seaham Red Star, Spennymoor & Guisborough. Stuart Banks (Forward) Winger who has scored 20 goals since joining after a lengthy spell with West Auckland. Had previous spells with Blyth Spartans and Billingham Town

Having managed the club on 4 occasions, first taking over at the age of 28, I am probably aware more than most of the demanding task it is. Geographically and this is said with the greatest respect to all local clubs, the leap from local leagues to Northern League level is a big ask for players. The commitment required by a player tells the Manager if he is the right type to represent the club. Trust between manager and player is vital. Today’s world finding players with the talent and commitment needed is not easy. Retaining the standard of football played at Frenchfield Park has to be the starting point of every season and the challenge ahead for this season is just that. Football is a results business and our return of points to date is very disappointing. Next season, with the club founded in 1894 we’ll be preparing for our celebration of 125 years of providing good quality football for both players and supporters. At times I feel as though I’ve been here for all that time, however, I would appeal if there is anyone out there who has ideas or time to spare getting involved I would love to hear from you. Supporters of the club will have seen the transformation with the playing surface. Hopefully this will allow more usage by the other teams representing the club. We have also started a relationship with Carlisle Utd with their youth team playing several games. In return we enjoy a much appreciated input from David Mitchell, the groundsman and his team, hopefully also going forward we may pick up a player. C’MON YOU BONNY BLUES Billy

FOOTBALL CLUBS AGREE “IN PRINCIPLE” TO MERGER Penrith Town Football Club and Penrith United have agreed, in principle, to merge. The new owner of Penrith Town, millionaire businessman Ges Ratcliffe, met with Penrith United committee members on Wednesday to discuss the idea. Mr. Ratcliffe, who has put thousands of pounds into Penrith Town, said that although there was still much work to be undertaken on the detail to translate the agreement into reality, it was hoped that the merger could be completed by the start of the 2008-09 season. A joint statement by the two clubs said: “Such a merger represents potentially excellent news for football in Penrith and will provide fantastic opportunities for the children in the area to join a club which plays football at a very high standard

The development of the new stadium at Frenchfield is now coming to fruition and will provide facilities to enable the club to develop to its maximum potential at the earliest opportunity.” Mr. Ratcliffe added: “I am delighted that the decision in principle as been taken to merge the two clubs, although I recognise that more work is needed on the detail. It makes perfect sense to combine the strengths of the two clubs, particularly with the possibility of a new ground on the horizon. “Penrith Town FC has a tremendous history over the last century and Penrith United has developed an excellent infrastructure involving many successful teams at all age groups. “ I am looking forward to the challenge of integrating the clubs and ensuring the new club meets its full potential.” Penrith United chairman Ian White said: “I am extremely pleased with the “in principle: decision in favour of a merger. It means our vision n of a club providing an opportunity for al to play football, both genders and from under-8s to senior sides, now seems likely to come to fruition.

“The opportunity provided by the new stadium at Frenchfield is one which must be grasped in order to maximise its potential as we look to a future of which we can be proud.” Last year, the two clubs were urged to resolve problems which could have prevented a major community football development scheme from going ahead. Penrith Town, which currently plays at Southend Road, is to be rehoused to make way for the new £77 million New Squares retail and housing complex. Planners had given their out-line support earlier this year to the construction of a new £1.5 million football stadium at Frenchfield, near Penrith, next to an existing sports complex. Officials at Penrith town, which plays in the Northern League, understood they would have exclusive use of this 1,500 capacity ground and looked forward to having improved facilities which would include a boardroom and bar area. However, as council officials sought to firm up details of the project, the idea of a ground-share with Northern Alliance League side Penrith United was mooted by the Football Association. The FA stated that major funding thought to be ore than £1 million would be available to invest in what could benefit football in the area of years to come. Penrith United, which was set up three years ago by former Penrith FC chairman Don Cameron, has numerous junior, men’s and women’s teams while Penrith town has one senior team.

Life of Pie Blog Team Northumbria 2 Penrith Team Northumbria beat Penrith with a little room to spare. For 20 minutes or so it was pretty even between the two sides but as the game progressed Team North improved and Penrith struggled. And for those opening 20 minutes the game was busy rather than noteworthy. And for much of the first half generally, Team North created the openings but didn’t do much with them. Perennial goalscorer Ben Dibb-Fuller broke the deadlock in the 39th minute with a well-taken goal. He took a long ball, turned the Penrith defender, took another touch and tucked it into the near post with not much to aim for. Penrith couldn’t muster too much to trouble home keeper Stefan Holden whose toughest save was in the 52nd minute when Shaun Gardner struck a low drive at the near post. Two minutes later Team North had doubled their lead and it crowned the best pass of the game. Kevin Carr threaded a beautiful pass between the Penrith defence, setting Joshua Bynoe up and he hit it first time to score with a precise finish. My second half notes on Penrith mainly consisted of “shot on target but weak”. They lack a cutting edge.High winds didn’t help the quality of the football, but Team North looked much more comfortable than the Cumbrians

Northern League Update In the first division of the ENL Marske are now up to second after a good 4-0 away win at Jarrow Roofing, while Stockton Town had a good 3-2 away win at Ashington. Shildon came from behind to win their local derby against Bishop Auckland 3-2 at Dean Street on Wednesday. The Railwaymen were well on top in the first half, and only had a 23rd minute header by Billy Greulich-Smith to how for their efforts, because Bishops keeper Scott Pocklington pulled off several good saves. But two minutes after half time Bishops levelled when an Ian Ward was header was blocked, and Andy Johnson pounced to score from the loose ball. Adam Burnicle hit the post for Shildon, before Bishops went into the lead, when Johnson turned well and beat Nick Liversedge. But Greulich-Smith then pounced twice in four minutes late in the game to give Shildon the points and put them into sixth place in the table. Bishops have dropped into the bottom four because Guisborough beat Whitley Bay 2-1 at the King George. Steven Roberts and Bradley Mills scored for them in the first half, with Alex Kempster replying after half time.

It was definitely a game of 2 halves. We put in our best performance so far this season in the first 45 with superb performances all round. Goals from Kerr, after great work by Butcher, and Shields 2 - a fine individual goal a superb ball by Henry Marshall) which led us into the break 3-1 up and much deserved after dominating throughout. HT 3-1.

Within 5 minutes of the restart the scores were level after a slow start by the lads. We still played our partRogers with 2 very questionable off sides with 1 ball in the back of Matt the net and 1 certain goal but it was K. Stephen who then took the lead with 20 minutes to go with a fortunate goal from a free kick which looped over everyone and ended up in the top left hand corner. The Academy didn’t give up but just couldn’t find an equaliser. FT 3-4.

Unfortunate for the lads but we must start quicker after HT. Westmorland League Division Three - How they stand

Richard and his team proved to have a great deal of skill and expertise between them with a determined and creative approach to any unforeseen problems that arose. The new roof progressed smoothly and quickly despite the notorious Cumbrian weather. They were polite, friendly and considerate. they did a great job and they cleared up and whisked away the rubble afterwards. We can't praise them enough. Richard came and got the job done and saved us money. We had new lead valleys put in roof, not only did Richard beat every quote we got he also done a little extra work free of charge, would highly recommend

Penrith Ladies and Girls Report

Page 20

Penrith AFC Ladies 6 Workington Reds Ladies 0 A youthful Penrith AFC Ladies front line produced an exciting attacking performance full of pace and clinical finishing as they defeated local rivals Workington Reds Ladies Penrith lined up without top scorer Nat Broad who was unwell. This opened the door for youngster Becca Alderson to step up from the clubs Development team and show what she could offer in the central striking role. She quickly obliged firing Penrith into the lead in only the 2nd minute. The pace of wide players Sarah Smith and Georgia Campbell was constantly stretching the Workington defence. On 14 mins these players linked up when Campbell crossed the ball for Smith who nipped in front of her marker to score 2-0. On the 20th minute Smith repaid the compliment. She raced down the left wing and curled a cross towards the back post when Campbell brilliantly fired home in full stride 3-0. With confidence high, Penrith pressed home their advantage. Hannah Coulthard extended the lead when she controlled the ball on her thigh before firing home from the edge of the penalty area 4-0. Before halftime Coulthard netted again when her free kick dipped over Workington’s defensive wall and nestled in to the bottom former of the net. HT 5-0 Three minutes into the 2nd half Coulthard completed her 2nd hat trick of the season. She scored from the penalty spot after a Workington defender handled the ball on the line. Workington, to their credit, stuck to their task well and prevented any further Penrith goals largely thanks to a string of fine saves from their keeper Miller. FT 6-0 This Sunday Penrith AFC Ladies face a daunting trip to face current League Cup holders FC United (of Manchester). Today we welcomed Crusaders Ospreys in the Junior Cumberland Cup down at French Field. With a very strong team at disposal, against an unfamiliar side in Crusaders, the lads had to work out the oppositions side early, and they did just that scoring two goals inside the first 10 minutes, a great outside of the foot cross from Danny Hall towards the back post for Callum Harkes to easily head home unmarked, followed by a superb first touch again from Danny Hall who then cut in and smashed the second in bottom corner. From there onwards Connor Gregory Dorsey began to dominate with strength and ability scoring a quick two in very quick succession Danny Hall then continued the goal spree scoring the sixth to make us in what we thought a very comfortable position at half time. We began the second half very slowly and far too laid back with crusaders scoring three goals from sloppy defending! After a reshuffle of players Penrith then brought one back from Connor Gregory Dorsey again with ten minute to go Connor then finished his goal scoring spree scoring his fifth goal of the game and bagging himself Man of the Match!
