A good afternoon. It’s great to be home! Wishing a warm welcome to our visitors, North Shields and to all those who have made the journey to the Frenchfield Park this afternoon. It’s the last of our November matches with the 29th Whitley Bay match now rescheduled to Wednesday 7th March. It was a bit of a blow as we did hope to make this a sponsors’ evening! Looking through the rest of our home fixtures, at home that is, the next evening match and this is the ‘only’ evening match although the weather might instigate a few changes and we do have some cup matches to schedule. It was great to see so many Bonny Blues supporters in the away match at Cockermouth in the 3rd round of the Senior Cumberland Cup. In the quarter final round we have been drawn at home to Windscale, so this match is to be played on Saturday 24th February 2018 at 1:30. Whilst writing this, the past two days have seen many inches of rain which even a good drainage system would struggle with. The flooding has returned to Cumbria and it is equally as bad as the rain we had two weeks prior to the weekend of the 2015 floods, if not worse than it was then. Subject to rain, sleet, snow and freezing conditions between the printing and the match, I hope I am in the stand with you all today. In our our last programme on 1st November, I wrote ‘Pending announcements tonight’. We had the announcement of our New Manager in Billy’s
Blog will fill you in on page 9, which brings you up to date since Kyle May took the reins as the new manager. All the usual reports are here in your Community Match day programme. North Shields Club History North Shields Athletic was originally formed in 1896, and played initially in the South Shields & District league. They progressed through the Northern Combination, Northern Alliance and North Eastern League and became a major force in North East Football, outside the Football League, moving to play at Hawkey’s Lane around 1900. The originally joined the Northern Alliance, before switching to the North Eastern League in 1908. The club emerged as Preston Colliery F.C. after the Great War, reverting to North Shields A.F.C. in 1928. They enjoyed tremendous local support with a record 12,800 watching the local derby with South Shields in October 1936. Shields won the North Eastern League title in 1950, before the league folded in 1958. Spells in the Midland League and Northern Counties league followed before the club joined the Northern league in the 1964-65 season, finishing third at their first attempt. The Robins moment of crowning glory came in 1969, when they won the FA Amateur Cup by beating Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium. Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey – both laid on by Orrick, a shipyard worker from Byker. The club, which also won the Northern League title and Challenge Cup that same year, were declared joint holders of the European Amateur Cup the following season when two games against Italian Side Almas resulted in a level aggregate score. In 1982, the Robins won 1-0 at Halifax Town in the FA Cup First Round, Bede McCaffrey scoring the all-important goal that year. Walsall were the visitors to Appleby Park in the second round, for only the second time in the club’s history and left with a 3-0 victory. Having moved into the national pyramid by joining the NCEL in 1989, North Shields earned promotion to the Northern Premier League by winning the title in 1992. However, financial problems arose, which meant Appleby Park had to be sold to and lead to the club folding. However, they almost instantly reformed as a new club, thanks to the efforts of local people and many of the current committee. The club, headed by new chairman Richard Slade, sought and gained immediate admission to the Second Division of the Wearside League. They were promoted to the top flight as runners-up in their first season, briefly reverting back to North Shields Athletic for four seasons. They enjoyed success in local cup competitions, too, the Shipowners Cup and NFA Senior Bowl added to that title in 1998/99 treble-winning season.

In 1999, the club moved to Ralph Gardner Park, now known as the Daren Persson Stadium, and began to develop the ground to meet the Northern League standards. Once again known as North Shields FC, the club began to kick on, league runners-up in 2000/01 and winners by eight points the following season. They also continued to collect silverware elsewhere, winning the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup in 2001 and again in 2003. After a fifteen-year absence, the Robins gained promotion back into the Northern League in 2004 following their third Wearside League title and a further Shipowners Cup triumph. After ten years in Division Two, the club belatedly returned to the top tier having narrowly missed out in 2010/11. The Robins shattered records en route to the 2013/14 championship including the Daren Persson Stadium attendance which was 1,312 for the visit of West Allotment Celtic and the presentation of the 2nd division trophy. But better was to come as the Robins swept past the likes of Phoenix Sports, Erith & Belvedere and Highworth Town to reach the 2015 FA Vase final at Wembley. In front of almost 10,000 fans, Shields went behind to Glossop North End, but a late equaliser by Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster’s extra-time finish clinched the coveted trophy for Graham Fenton’s men. The club also finished fourth in division one to cap a memorable season. Last season Shields followed up this success by finishing fifth in the league, but also clinched the Northumberland Senior Cup, beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 at St James Park with Ryan Carr scoring a last minute winner. Manager Graham Fenton left the club in September 2016 to join South Shields, with Jon McDonald replacing him as manager. McDonald kept North Shields at the top until early April, losing out to South Shields in the title race. North Shields also lost the Senior Cup to Blyth and the League Cup to South Shields after which Jon McDonald left the club. Shields moved to appoint Assistant Manager, Brian Smith as the new Manager, with Gary Ormston stepping up as Assistant and Andy Gowans joining the coaching set up alongside Wilf Keilty. North Shields FC. Let’s Meet the Team The Management & Players Manager – Brian Smith Played for the Robins in central defence, coached under Graham Fenton. Stepped up to assistant manager last season, and was appointed Manager in May 2017. Assistant Manager – Gary Ormston Stepping into the assistant manager role to assist Brian Smith, whilst remaining on the playing squad for 2017-18. A popular figure in the dressing room and around the club. Coach – Wilf Kielty Wilf was an illustrious player for the Robins spanning 3 decades. He later managed the club taking them out the Wearside league. More recently at West Allotment, Wilf has returned to help the Robins cause. A popular and reliable figure to have around the place. Coach – Andy Gowans Brought in to the club in summer 2017 to join Big Bri's management team. Andy has vast experience in non-league football from a playing career with Gateshead, Bedlington Terriers and Whitley Bay, where he won the FA Vase as manager in 2002. Physio – Micky Leigh Micky joined North Shields as club physio under Graham Fenton in 2014. He looks after the players when they pick up knocks and niggles throughout the season. Goalkeeper - Kyle Hayes Outstanding in his first season last year after joining from Shildon. Proved himself to be an able shot stopper clocking up 13 clean sheet and 3 penalty shoot-out wins in 44 appearances last year. Goalkeeper - Sean McCafferty Experienced and solid keeper in his second spell with the Robins. Has played for Bedlington Terriers and Whitley Bay of late. Also a decent cricketer. Kept seven clean sheets in 11 games last season. Defender - Marc Lancaster Signed from Morpeth Town, a solid defender and a handy addition when pushing forward. What he lacks in height he makes up for in pace. A very popular figure around the dressing room. Defender - Jordan Summerly Talented young attacking left back who earned man of the match on his debut and scored a great goal. Came through Monkseaton Academy, a real gem of an attacking defender. Defender - Joe Robson Joe joined in July 2017 from National League side Gateshead. The 18-yearold defender was on the fringes of the Gateshead 1st team last season and was well established in the under 19 team which played in the Northern Alliance. Defender - Kurtis Dodds also joins from National League side Gateshead. The 18-year-old centreback likes to play out from the back but is also strong and physical. Previously played for Middlesbrough under 16's. Defender - Kevin Hughes Proud captain who lifted the FA Vase on that famous May afternoon in 2015, to add to the 2nd Division and Senior Cup. A rock solid defender, Kevin previously played for West Allotment. Defender - Richard Pell Richard is a strong powerful centre-half who joined from Morpeth Town on loan, having previously been with Blyth Spartans. He was signed permanently after impressing at the back Defender - Jack Donnison A young solid full back whose energy and love of a tackle has made him a favourite at Shields. Has become a consistent performer in defence but also good at going forward. Defender - Rhys Groves A young defender recently signed, having experience of playing in Sweden. Formerly with the Carlisle United Youth set up.
Midfielder - Craig McFarlane - Craig joined from Whitley Bay and racked up nearly 300 appearances for our near neighbours. A reliable defender/midfielder, Craig is a three time FA Vase winner and also played for Bedlington Terriers. Midfielder - Paul Robinson - Midfielder who arrived in July from Morpeth Town with bags of top level experience. Formerly a Vase winner three times with Whitley Bay, he has also played for Blyth Spartans and Morpeth Town. Midfield - Adam Forster - Adam is an awesome midfield talent whose campaign was blighted by injury last year. Great on the ball, without the ball and getting the ball back, he wrote himself into the history books with the 2015 Wembley winner. Midfielder - Gary Ormston A goalscoring midfielder who is comfortable across the centre of the park. His experience will bring on the younger players and his 100% attitude will always be a huge plus. Midfielder - Ryan Carr Nippy attacker with a keen eye for goal who progressed through the ranks at AFC Farsley. Now playing in his native North East and got the last minute winner in the 2016 Senior Cup Final. Midfielder - Dean Holmes Signed from Heaton Stannington, Dean scored on his Shields debut, Dean also chipped in with vital strikes during the 2015 Vase winning season. Dean has played most times in the current squad. Midfielder – Ben Sampson Ben is a young accomplished midfielder signed from Ashington. Tipped for good things, he won a plethora of awards at Ashington as well as breaking into the side at 17 years old. Forward - Gareth Bainbridge A Shields legend of the modern era, Gareth has delivered crucial goals at venues including Wembley & St James Park. Since joining from Ashington, Gaz has went from strength to strength. Forward Ben – Harmison A tall forward signed from Ashington with a good scoring record in Northern League Division One. His physical presence causes problems for defenders. Forward - Lee Mason Signed from Whitby Town in 2016, cultured goal scoring midfielder who can play up top. ‘Masa’ was previously a regular higher up the pyramid, the exHartlepool United man turning out for Blyth Spartans & the Seasiders. Forward - Dan Wilson A forward who's equally as comfortable with his back to goal or at goal. A great lad who shows amazing strength and determination and will score goals. Signed from Dunston UTS. Forward - Phil Bell A forward player recently signed by Brian Smith who has played for Whitley Bay, Blyth Spartans and Ashington before moving to London as a result of work .

When I set out with the idea of ‘Back to Southend Road’, I wasn’t sure how it would work out. I was fortunate in that when I set out on taking on the challenge Brian Kirkbride was at hand, who for many years has produced the match day programme and he has been supplying local news clips. Another bonus was that I was handed a Green recycling bag that was full of old match day programmes and photos which was a snap shot of the club’s history from quite a period at Southend Road. It wasn’t just a bundle of bits and pieces, it was a snap of a supporter of our club who today at every match, we see his name as we look across the pitch. So he is still very much with the Bonny Blues. In that bag was Walter’s programmes, etched with his notes and records, spanning many years. It is a rare find for any club that is approaching 125 years. So as we move into the second part of the season, we’ll be bringing you these archive reports and pictures along with players, staff and supporters memories of their Southend Road experiences. Lots to report since our last home game. I have commented many times on our disappointing performances this season. To this end, Jim Nichol resigned from his position as Manager. Jim was very much club orientated and he leaves on good terms with everyone connected with the club.
Billy’s Blog
News travels fast and we received quite a few applications even though the post was never advertised because of our precarious league position. Time was of the essence to give any new Manager the maximum opportunity to put his plans into action. A number of the applications were from out of this area and although of a high quality, they did not match up to what was felt required at this time. We owe many thanks to Andy Coyles and Shaun Gardner for taking responsibility until a new boss was found. Kyle May is our choice and it was always hoped that any new Manager has an immediate impact. Kyle still has a lot to offer as a player and his no nonsense record as a defender at Workington Reds coupled with the loyalty aspect is something I have always admired. Kyle will manage in the same no nonsense way, expecting all those around him to give their very best. Results have taken a turn for the better which is what we hoped for, however, importantly we still must approach every game as a cup tie. My special thanks to Andy Coyles, who is proving to be a real asset to the club. A west Cumbrian by birth who now lives at Richmond, Yorkshire. A highly qualified coach who works for British universities, hopefully he and Kyle will form a relationship they both enjoy and the club reaps that benefit. Today is the first time our supporters will have the chance to form their own opinion on Kyle’s appointment. I for one am in no doubt that if everyone with the club at heart gives him the backing I intend to, we have every opportunity of enjoying our football club and its fortunes. A couple of much needed fundraisers this coming month. Race Night in the clubhouse on 16th December and a Christmas Draw which will be drawn at one of our home games over the Christmas period. Penrith AFC Ladies 2 Carlisle United 0 A keenly contested local derby was as close as the scoreline suggests. Penrith’s match day squad included 5 U18’s and youngster Georgia Campbell had a significant impact on the outcome of the game scoring one goal and providing the assist for the other. Carlisle had the upper hand in the early territorial battle with much of the play taking part on the Penrith half of the pitch. Penrith stuck to their game plan and were happy to soak up the Carlisle pressure and rely upon swift counter attacks. This paid dividends in the 13th minute when Georgia Campbell’s pace took her clear on the right wing. Her cross found Nat Broad who nipped in front of her defender and swept the ball home. Penrith continued to defend with discipline and limited Carlisle to long range efforts. HT 1-0 Into the 2nd half the game continued in the same pattern. Carlisle pushed to get back into the game but it was Penrith who extended their lead in the 51st minute when youngster Campbell again broke clear on the right and squeezed the ball in at the top corner. As the 2nd half progressed Carlisle began to throw more players into attacking positions. They created several good chances however Penrith keeper Michelle Jones was in outstanding form and pulled of a string of fine saves. Carlisle attacking intentions left them open at the back and Penrith really should have extended their lead but failed to take full advantage of several overload attacks. FT 2-0 This Sunday Penrith travel to face Burscough Ladies.

Richard and his team proved to have a great deal of skill and expertise between them with a determined and creative approach to any unforeseen problems that arose. The new roof progressed smoothly and quickly despite the notorious Cumbrian weather. They were polite, friendly and considerate. they did a great job and they cleared up and whisked away the rubble afterwards. We can't praise them enough. The Academy had a break from the league last week and welcomed 2nd in the table Kirkby Stephen to Frenchfield in the Junior Cup. It was the 3rd time the two sides had met this season and each game has been extremely close with a victory for each team in the league. The away side are flying high at the moment in the league but they found an Academy side today in a determined mood and very good form. It was the Academy who started as they meant to go on and dominated the opening exchanges creating a number of chances which they struggled to convert but it was the Academy’s Greg Hall who opened the scoring on 24 minutes with a superb strike. 1-0. This gave the home side confidence and they continued to dominate and went further ahead just before half time with a fantastic early ball from keeper Lewis Waugh and it was Greg Hall who pounced once again to make it 2-0 to the Academy. HT 2-0. In the 2nd half it continued to be the Academy winning 50/50 challenges and their football going forward was enjoyable to watch and with 20 minutes left on the watch they were awarded a penalty for a challenge on a lively Taryn Reay in the box. Obviously there was only one man who was going to take the spot kick and yes Greg Hall finished well to get his first hat trick for the club. 3-0. The game was won at this stage but credit to Kirkby Stephen they competed well and caused us a few problems at times but the Academy ran out deserved winners. So many top performances today to name all but a mention must go to Nathan Kerr and Kieron Hodgson who were a different class. Langwathby v Penrith Panthers The Panthers took on Langwathby for a second successive week looking to overturn a 4.1 defeat seven days earlier. On a sunny picturesque morning the game got off to a frantic start with both teams striving for the breakthrough. Panthers goalkeeper Harvey Reay had to be in top form as he made a couple of early saves to keep out James Mcgregor who had scored a hat-trick the week before. The home side were looking to use their physical advantage and got their noses in front when Mcgregor used his strength to poke the ball past Reay. Panthers showed real character after going behind and soon turned the game on its head with 2 goals in five minutes. Callum Wills showed all his battling qualities to put the Panthers 2.1 up. Against the run of play Langwathby got back on level terms right at the end of the 1st half with a neat right foot finish. It was one way traffic in the second half as Panthers peppered the home goal but couldn't find that finishing touch with Wills, Wallace, Ferguson and Morrison all going close. Man of the match, Finlay Awde kept the threat of Mcgregor neutralised as he barely gave him a sniff of the ball and Ben Dargue and Ed Wright at the back were getting forward at every opportunity. The killer blow came with 6 minutes to go when Langwathby were awarded a free kick mid way in the Panthers half. Mcgregor floated the ball high into the 6 yard box and it somehow landed at the feet of the home striker who stroked it into the goal. As the full time whistle went, Langwathby celebrated as they'd won the world cup while the Panthers were devastated. A great U14 game to watch and massive credit to Langwathby for every player showing huge desire and determination. It's a cruel game sometimes for the Panthers. FT Langwathby 3 Penrith Panthers 2 FC Castletown v Penrith Stars Game started well for Penrith moving the ball and passing. Penrith were playing against an older side and were struggling a little to adjust to their more physical opponents. The goalkeeper made some good saves and on a long kick up the pitch the ball bounced over the advancing Castletown keeper and into the net. Penrith took control of the game after that and goals from Corey Tompkinson and Ellis Atkinson sealed an impressive victory. Castletown Falcons 2 v Penrith Wolves 2 This Sunday saw the Penrith Wolves try and reverse a narrow loss earlier in the season. The match day began with an impeccably observed minutes silence. An extremely well matched pair of teams went head to head, with little between the sides in the early stages. Morgan Goad was to break the deadlock for the home team with an impressive strike from distance. Penrith reacted well, working hard to restrict the oppositions possession and started to turn up the pressure but were unable to draw level before the break. Second half saw Penrith become the dominant side, causing problems for the Castletown side, nice play in midfield culminating with a defence splitting pass to Luke Leonard who crashed his shot into the top corner from the edge of the box for a well deserved equaliser. More Penrith pressure followed with man of the match Christie Moore giving the Wolves a well deserved lead. Penrith heading for a hard fought but deserved 3 points until a freekick well into injury time, the initial freekick caused little problem but, failing to be cleared sufficiently the follow up shot from Ben Ellis was unstoppable.
