This mood board shows different and unique structures that I can use as inspiration when creating the exterior parts of my space. One key architect that uses structure well is Zaha Hadid , I have included some of her work in this slide as it could be the style I may follow and adapt upon later in my project. Her style attracts allot of people and tourists which will be one of my goals as having a unique structural design will catch peoples eyes therefor attracting allot of people.
This mood board is here so I can create new and different types of interior furniture and even create some exterior sections of my space using this as inspiration. For example I could use the form of a wave to create a type of sofa chair. I will look into architects that base their buildings of movement and flow, showing me different ways I can manipulate walls and give a unique/ different building a purpose.
This mood board shows the way movement and flow and structures could be put together to make very unique buildings and interior spaces which I could use for inspiration and then I will make something similar using this style. (artists that used movement/flow or structures to create an exterior or interior section with a purpose) this slide consists mainly of 3 artists: Zaha Hadid, Tony Owen and Shigeru Ban these guys execute the themes I have based my project on very well. So I chose their pieces of work to help me create my exterior spaces. I can learn from them and take certain features out of their buildings and add them to my designs.
Design brief My space will be a mix between a library and a cafÊ but it will be modernised as I want to make a space that will actually attract students as libraries tend to look dull and out dated which is very unattractive so my job is too make one that stands out to students so students will start to go to libraries more often where they could meet new friends, get help that they couldn’t get outside of class and just to relax and do their work in a nice, peaceful environment. My space will be designed for students around 14-20 years old. My aim is to make my space look modern and unique so it will attract my target audience, However older and younger individuals will still be able to use this library its just that its made to attract that age range as I feel like they need to use libraries the most. This is due to the fact they face allot of very important exams during those years and having the right resources to study will effect how well they do in the future, this is why they need a relaxed space with the right atmosphere to allow them to revise and do their work. My job now is to make sure that happens.
Specification
What my space will include • • • • • • • •
A café for people to get drinks such as coffee and tea and also little snacks like cookies and sandwiches Tables and stools near the café Sofa chairs (various seating areas) with tables placed all around the area for people to relax, read or do work. A library so students can use books to study or just for casual reading A computer space for students that want to do work or do research Sockets placed near seats for people to charge their own laptops Speakers in the corner of the sealing's that will play relaxing and calm music to help people concentrate which will create the right atmosphere. Toilets (mixed so it saves space)
Will have a modern design aimed to attract its target audience of students from the age of 14-20. will be based somewhere in a city that is surrounded by many schools and colleges.
This would be an ideal area to have my space built as its a large space with varies transport options such as buses and trains nearby. Allowing people to reach the library easily. There are allot of schools and colleges within the area I want to build my space, meaning kids and young adults will not have to travel very far to go to the library and can come after school hours without having any trouble. It is in a rather busy area as there is a shopping centre nearby, this is a benefit as more people will see the building which means more visitors and customers. The place is currently owned by SME architecture and landscape Address- Maxwell Road, Romford RM7 0FH
All the red marks are schools/colleges within the area
Inspiration (drawing styles) To make sure I am successful in this project I need to look at other architects and their drawing styles. This makes my work look more professional and looks a lot more organised. These are plan and elevation drawings made by other architects. I really like the way this architect set out his two pages. Its clear, shows the person exactly how the space will be laid out and also what furniture will be used. The work is very detailed and also uses a nice amount of colour which gives the page more life and looks more pleasing to the eye.
Existing CafĂŠs designs (interior) I like the styles of the cafes, they give a home, cosy, comfortable vibe which means the customer will automatically be in a positive and peaceful mood due to the atmosphere. I chose to do line drawings of the spaces to understand the layout of the rooms more, doing this will allow me to take parts that I find work the most effectively and use them when creating my own interior space. An example is the way they laid out the bottom right picture out, having a nice amount of natural light come through with plants surrounding the windows gives the space more life and I feel like its an effective way to lay out a seating area.
Existing bookshops/library designs (interior) I did the same thing but I used images of library spaces that I found gave of a good working environment and that I would use to inspire my designs. These images work well when drawn out in line form as it gives me more of an understanding of how to lay the bookshelves to save space and to also make the room look allot more attractive. However I feel like some of the books may be hard to reach as the bookshelves tend to be very high and not everyone may be comfortable climbing a ladder. This just shows just because it looks nice it may not be very practical. This is something I must try to stick to when designing my interior space.
Secondary research of existing Starbucks coffee shop These are existing Starbucks shops, they all have different interior designs and I will be taking out the sections that I like the most. I will then draw them out in my next slide. Doing this will give me a greater understanding of what makes a coffee shop successful and how I can take out features and add them to a space that would include a library also. Starbucks are known for their welcoming and cosy cafes, this is why I chose to do my research on them. To make my space successful I must set a calm atmosphere through out the whole building (just like the pictures to your right). This is needed as the space is in a working environment.
Secondary research of existing Starbucks coffee shop drawings I chose different furniture designs and forms of layout and drew them out. This gave me a better understanding of how a coffee shop is set up. How things are placed and the purpose of things such as snack stands placed all around the shop displaying the different items you can purchase in store. This will benefit me later on in the project when I start setting up the lay out of my coffee shop.
Secondary research of existing Starbucks coffee shop (exterior) I then did some research on the designs of exterior Starbucks cafes. The purpose of this is to understand why people are attracted to visiting these cafes. So that I know when designing my cafes exterior I know the key parts that stand out to people and attract people inside and I can add them to my own.
Secondary research of existing Starbucks coffee shop exterior Drawings I drew out the pictures in a more simple form to understand the different designs and forms that make up the structure. One thing that I noticed is that they use allot of windows, using a lot of natural light. This could be what attracts people in as they walk past these buildings, as they can see everything in side. Seeing all the foods and drinks on display make the customer want to buy something which leads them in. so using this technique for my cafĂŠ will definitely be considered when in the designing stage.
Star bucks (bond street station)
Primary research of existing coffee shop I went to central London as I know there are a variety of different coffee shops. The 3 shops to the right are all within a 5 minute walk from each other, I did this to see how they can use different techniques to attract more customers to their shop. As you can see the 3 shops are set up completely different, different styles in furniture, layout etc. my goal is to explore what works for each café and then try incorporate it when I design my interior. I will do this in the next 3 slides by drawing each café out individually and writing about what works and what doesn't.
Pret (bond street café)
Natural history museum café
Drawings of the bond street Pret Good • Easy access to snacks • The display of food is very good, can see everything and a wide range of food. • Furniture gives a warm and cosy feeling • Unique layout (due to its plan), having this makes them different which people are attracted to. • The drink display is easy to read, in a good place Bad • The seating area seemed very cramped up, not good use of spacing. • May be a trip hazard due to all the food displays sticking out everywhere.
PLAN drawing
Drawings of the natural history museum café Good • Uses its space well (plenty of seats and all have a fair amount of space between them). • Artwork on the sides give people something to look at sets a nice atmosphere. • I also like the way all the drinks are displayed, good way to show what you have and you don’t need to worry about the risk of someone stealing. • Till has a clean and tidy lay out. Bad • Very basic furniture, this makes the place seem dull and basic. • There aren't many things in the café even though it’s a big space which makes it look too simple. • No colour scheme, makes the place seem outdated and boring.
Drawings of the bond street star bucks Good • The spacing here was the best as it was the smallest space but knew how to utilise it and make it feel bigger than it actually is. • The till was my favourite part about this space as I like the layout they used to set it up and i also liked the lights and display pieces they used. • Also had pictures up in the seating area gives people something to look at and gives more life to the room. Bad • The colour of the walls could be a bit brighter, this would make the space more inviting and less dull.
Archicad of the bond street station star bucks This was in my opinion the best cafĂŠ out of the 3 I examined. It did a great job of utilising its size. I created this space on archicad as it is small but uses its space very well as it can fit allot of people without making you feel cramped when inside. This is something I will need to do as my space is not just a cafe it is mixed with a library so I will have to use my space wisely. Recreating this cafĂŠ helped me understand how much I can actually do with a small space. Layout and also having a colour scheme can impact the place allot, you can fit allot more people in and with the right colour scheme or theme you can make someone feel comfortable and relaxed in your space. This will be the big decider on whether people want to go and stay in your space or not.

Elevation/plan drawings for an existing library Seikei University Library
I am using this library for research as its interior is amazing, and very different to every other library (what I'm trying to achieve) due to its bubble rooms and unique floors. This is the reason it is so successful and attracts allot of people in. So I am using his interior plan drawings to understand the layouts he used that gave him the success he has, so I can take the parts that I thought were successful and add them into my own.
Elevation/plan drawings for an existing cafe After looking at Seikeis library I decided to find an existing café that would be similar to the size mine would be and draw its plan and elevations. This lets me understand the space better and see what makes the café successful due to its lay out. Having a go at drawing plan and elevation views will just prepare me more for when I have to create and draw my final design. I chose a small café as mine will most likely be small as it is inside a library.

Map models and development As my space will be located in a city, I decided to use sections of London and create a model/design that is influenced by the roads and streets of London. I then drew the model out in a smaller scale and started to develop it into a building under the influence of flow and structure. This building in particular is not to big and has a wave type feeling to it. This could be used to later influence the design of my final design.
Map models and development I used the same map technique however I used a different section of London. I feel like I developed the building into a much more sleek design. However I feel like this will only be a section or separate part to the main building, this would work well as a cafĂŠ due to its size.
Map models and development I made one more of the map models and created a line drawing to simplify the actual form so I could turn it to part of or a building. Currently I feel like this could be an entrance to a building, as it is very open however it is rather small. This design could be used to help my future designs
Then my class took a trip to the 100% design exhibition, the purpose of this was for inspiration when creating our interior sections, discovering the different designs for furniture that we can take into consideration when designing our space. This gave me allot of different options for furniture such as chairs, tables, shelves, and display pieces that could be used in my cafĂŠ and also my library. We also got the opportunity to talk to professionals that design layouts for buildings and how they would place certain pieces of furniture. This was very useful as it will now make my designing skills more professional and my interior should now look more organised than before.
Primary research of furniture (tables) I took many pictures that day and this slide shows images of desks, tables and also potential cashier tables that I could possibly use for my library and my cafĂŠ. However all of these may not match my theme of structure and flow, also having all of these different forms in one space will not look very pleasing to the eye. So I must decide on which ones I keep and why I keep them.
I drew out the tables, desks and the cashier desk that I will be using for my space. As you can see I stuck to the structural theme for these pieces of furniture as I think it will make my interior look modern and sleek. I drew them out in the artist style you can see at the bottom, this is to enhance the quality of my work and it also makes the page look different from the other drawing pages I have already done. I feel like this style is effective as its simple but looks very professional at the same time.
Primary research of furniture (chairs)
These are the images I took of the chairs that I could use for the cafĂŠ and also the sofa chairs that will be placed around the library's reading area. Here you see some very simple designs and then a few that are completely unique, having a variety of different chairs means I can set a different mood for each room, what I mean by this is by having cosy, big chairs in the library area and then having more simple modern looking chairs in the cafĂŠ, these little details will set a different mood in the two rooms. This is something I will consider when deciding which seats I will use for my space.
These are the style of chairs and sofa seats I will use for my cafÊ and library. I chose more of a sleek and modern style of chairs for the cafÊ to match the tables I chose and then I chose a few big cosy chairs for the reading area in the library. These seats are a mixture of structural designs and flow designs, the flow designs are the ones that will go into the library as they have a more home feeling rather than the modern structural design chairs. I also chose to draw these out in a more rough and sketchy style as it allows me to explore shading which is something I don’t really use in my drawings.
Primary research of furniture (woodwork) These are the shelves and doors I chose to take pictures of. These all have something unique about them that I really liked, for example the way the shelves curved, this shows movement and flow and I can use these type of shelves if my design has curved walls as it would all fit into place well. These items will be a big part of my interior as these are massive and if they do not look good or they don’t match my theme my interior will not be successful and that could ruin my building.
I then drew out the woodwork I am planning on using for my space, I felt like these match my theme as most of them use structure very well. I also really like the one that is based around movement and flow. This would be great in my space as my walls are most likely going to be curved in some sort of way because of my theme so having this type of shelf will slide in to place perfectly. I also chose to draw this page out in the style underneath as I thought it will give the page more life and because I haven't used colour yet so it’s also to explore new techniques.
Primary research of furniture (lights)
There were allot of interesting and unique lights that I would have never even thought of. Here are the few that I selected to take pictures of as I thought they matched my theme well and that they would look good in my final project. These are all structural designs that would be used above the till and also in the reading zones in the library. Having these kind of lights will definitely make the room stand out much more.
These are the lights I chose to keep for my space. I feel like they matched my theme the most and definitely look very pleasing to they eye, making the section they are in stand out more. For example what library have you been to that would use these kinds of lights? Non, this is why my space will attract so many more people due its unique interior and exterior. I chose to draw them out in this style as I feel like its simple but different just like the lights I am using for my project, so I thought it would fit in well.
How structure and flow can be incorporated to buildings These are drawings of existing buildings/structures that have incorporated the theme of structure and flow. I chose to draw the leap house in Sydney which was designed by Tony Owen partners as I like the style he used and I would like my work to take some sort of inspiration from it. So I decided to draw it from different angles and elevations just by looking at one image as this allows me to understand the space more and how it was built structurally, I also repeated this with the sun bamboo pavilion that you can see to the left for the same reason.
Company buildings that used the theme of structure or flow. I chose secondary images of companies that have used my theme within their buildings, this gives allows me to see how other people have explored that theme and can incorporate it with their function. I drew them out in a simple form using line drawings so that I can understand how each section of their buildings can be used. These are all buildings by big companies such as Nike, Nissan, BMW and L'OrĂŠal. Which shows us how this theme can be adapted to completely different functions.
Drawings of movement and flow (secondary) To make sure my space is at a high level like Tony Owens Partners work, I need to have a starting point/ base that I will develop and improve overtime so I will use these forms of movement and flow and simplify them, from this I can manipulated the image to try form an interior or exterior structure that I will use for my final space.
Drawings of organic structure (secondary) By simplifying these images when I draw them, it creates a base of a new structure that will eventually be enhanced and then will be used as a building or a part of the new space. Using organic structure will help my work as it is what inspires Shigeru Ban and the interior designs he creates are extraordinary, therefor using this as a base could help me reach something much better than if I was just to make the interior up as I go along.
Drawings of man made structures (secondary This slide has the same concept as the other two however I decided to simplify these images because of Zaha Hadid as her buildings were very structural and looking at different man made structures could lead me to something new and futuristic looking just like many of Zahas pieces.
Primary images from the history museum I went to the natural history museum so that I could take primary images of organic structure, man made structure and also movement and flow. These will be used in the next couple slides. I will draw the best ones in a minimalistic form and then I will combine the drawings to try create a design that could later be used for an exterior or interior section of my space
Drawings of movement and flow
Drawings of organic structure
Drawings of man made structure
Combining and manipulating the drawings I manipulated my primary and secondary drawings to influence my later exterior designs and models. These exterior designs will be different and more modern as the whole point is to attract a younger group (14-20), I will slowly process these images by making models and eventually it will start looking like a building. I will try to have at least 3 of these models/buildings, from there I will take the best parts from each building and combine them together to form my final model.
Starting points for buildings from manipulated images Here are a few models that I made. These are starting points that will be developed and will start to form a building which I can then use to form my final model. As you can see they are pretty simple models at the moment but when I add and take away certain features they will start to look more unique and different, which will hopefully attract more people as it will look very different to everything else in its surrounding.
Creating interior designs from manipulated images This model started from a picture of folded cloth, this shows how much I have developed on that one image to get a Shigeru Ban inspired interior, this section could be used for the library, I feel like it would really work well if all the walls were covered in bookshelves, this makes the interior design more unique as it wont just be a bunch of typical walls with a bookshelves on them, it is more like a maze with a bunch of sections which could be used to separate the genres of books, this gives the section more of a practical function to it.
Creating interior designs from manipulated images This model is more of a Tony Owen style model, it has a very movement and flow them to it which is my one of my goals, this section could be used as part of a reception for my library and could have bookshelves around it or something like a quiet zone inside the actual model. I will try to use this in my final model as it matches my theme well, however it may need to be adapted to my final exterior design so some things may change.
Creating exterior designs from the drawings This started from a very unusual form I tried to simplify the crystal aspect and started to make the wave form into a roof. Simplifying this image eventually lead me to drawing the images you see to the side. From this I created a model to understand if this structure would actually work and how I started to think about the size of the model and if the model is big enough to have a library and a cafĂŠ inside. I like this model as it shows movement and flow due to the buildings actual shape and also has a structural theme to it due to the crystal like shapes on the sides. This model has a Zaha Hadid vibe to it as it looks rather futuristic and follows the structure and flow theme.
Creating exterior designs from the drawings This model is rather small however I feel like it works well, it was slowly developed from the drawing you see above. This model also has both themes within it, movement and flow in the walls and roof and then structure for the section on the roof that allows natural light through. As the model is rather small I will have to take out key features from the model rather than using it as the base, as I will not be able to fit a fully functioning library with a cafĂŠ in that small space. I like the amount of natural light that comes into this space so that is something I will definitely take into consideration when designing my final design.
Creating exterior designs from the drawings This model was slowly developed over time. I feel like this one is the best out of the three, as it uses the theme just like the other two models, but makes it suits this model the best and makes it look futuristic. However I feel like it is the most suitable size for my space and also the unique and pleasing to the eye. However it still has parts to improve upon, this will be done by using the best parts from the other models and adding them on to this one and also taking away sections from this design that I feel aren't working well. This exterior has a lot of similarities to the architects I have been using for inspiration. This is due to me staying consistent to my themes just like Zaha Hadid, Tony Owen and Shigeru Ban.

Creating the exterior for my final model I started to take apart the features I wanted to keep from the other models and started placing everything together, this gave me this design to my right, which I drew out from different views and elevations with the skills I learnt earlier in this project.

Final Design (sketch up) Designing my final design/idea on sketchup allows you to visualize the finished product and gives a sense of scale giving you a clear idea what it would be like in the real world. This design was made to hold a library and also a café, here you can see where everything will be located (which sections of the building contain the needs of a library and café). First of all the doors at the front lead you into the front desk where you can sign in or out books, downstairs will also include the majority of the library (majority of the books) it will also include a computer section where students can do research or work I a quiet area when needed. Upstairs will hold a study area full of seats and tables to do work and will also include a section where trained teachers can try help you with your problems. Also on that floor you can exit to the outside seating area that is well sheltered for when you want to snack or read during the warmer days. Finally we have the stairs to the 3rd floor which is a fully modern café, allowing you to fulfil your needs of enjoying some nice simple food and drink
Here you can clearly see how merging the 3 models together allowed this model to have a good combination of flow and structures as can be seen in the diamond like structures and the smooth circular design on the first and second floor. You can also see the clear influence from architects such as Zaha Hadid and Tony Owen partners, showing I have learnt and incorporated my favourite designs and styles within my work.
Developing the final model further Due to the final models exterior lacking character I decided to further develop it to make it more attractive to the eye and to stand out from the buildings you see on a daily basis. I decided to follow more of a structural approach to the exterior and then making the interior layout suit more of a movement and flow theme. I also decided to replace the spike like pillars around the space as they didn’t really serve a purpose. Replacing them with these wing like shelters that will shelter people from the rain. You can also see the inspiration I have taken to produce this idea at the top of this page. In the next slide I will actually draw what the final idea will look like and produce a sketchup model showing a 3d view of the final solution.
Drawings of Final design Here I have produced elevation and plan views of what the final solution will look like, using all of the images seen in the last slide as inspiration caused me to produce this design. As you can see there is a big difference from my original final design and now it suits the theme much better and also looks much more pleasing to the eye due to its unique shape and design. To match the theme of structure I decided to also make certain of the shapes stick out at the entrance section so the building actually interacts with the building as during sunny days certain sections could actually be used as seating.
Fully developed final design This is how my fully developed final design looks like in all of its different views and angles, it is a much better version of my original final model as it matches the themes more and generally just looks a lot more visually pleasing. In these images you can also see how the shapes actually stick out of the building and interact with its surrounding as it provides shelter and a much better finish than when it was all flat and simple. However the interior still holds the same shape its just the roof, shelter and textures that were developed further creating this fully developed outcome.
Final Design (first floor) I designed this first floor using my previous models to create the structural interior you see in front of you. This floor is the main part of the library function as most of the books will be located right here. As you can see we have the front desk as soon as you come through the door where you can check in and check out books, we then have the computer section which are placed for study purposes also some tables so you can do desk work. Then we have shelves upon shelves filled with every book you could think of. There are two sets of stairs for people to reach the other floors. Also I have not forgotten about safety as I have included a fire exit and fire extinguishers around the premises. I have chosen to draw different views such as plan elevations and some 3D perspectives to give you a better understanding of what I imagine.
ARCHI-CAD First Floor Here is the first floor of my space, this section includes the front desk that can be found as soon as you step foot in the building, a computer study section located in the middle of the building, with computers and desks for people to study. This floor also holds majority of the books as this floor is covered in shelves full of novels and story's for all ages. You can see the modern wooden floor with the baby blue and white theme suitable for both genders making the interior aesthetically pleasing.
Entrance/ front desk. This is where you can hand in and take out books for studying or just for enjoyment.
This is the computer section where you can study quietly using both computers and the desks located within this section.
Here is the main library section with all the books you need listed from A-Z throughout the whole of the bottom floor, also everything is separated into genres so you can find the right books for you with ease
1st floor interior
Final Design (second floor) This slide shows us the lay out of the second floor, showing how I used an existing model that was influenced by movement and flow and adapted it create a study centre with help desk in the middle of the second floor. The desk will have staff that can help people with certain problems for certain subjects and there will be some macs located for further help. There will be desks and tables to do work and the outside will be covered in bookshelves that have books to do with studying. I provided different views in my drawings to show you what I imagine my space to look like. The outside/ balcony will have seating and tables for the cafĂŠ on hot sunny days. This also lets people read and study outside when the weather is nice.
ARCHI-CAD Second Floor Here is the second floor showing you another study area however this is not a quite zone and you can sit and talk about work with friends/ do group work. It also has a desk in the centre that will have teachers that can help students with certain subjects. They will also be able to search certain things up as there will be a couple computers on the main desk. This floor also leads to the outside where you can see the exterior seating area and stairs going up to the cafĂŠ.
Bookshelves are placed all around the exterior of the centre, however these books are more for studying rather than for just pleasure, however you can take books up and down but they must be placed back to the correct floor.
This image shows the centre of this floor (study centre) showing you the help desk and various different tables and seating located around the desk
This shows the exit leading to the exterior seating section that is used for both cafĂŠ and the library. Set up for those sunny and warm days allowing you to enjoy some food and drink whilst you enjoy reading your favourite book.
2st floor interior
Final Design (third floor) Here you see the café at the top of the building (3rd floor). I have detailed sketches of different views and angles showing you the simple modern little café located within my library. It has many influences of layout from the bond street Starbucks as the sizing of both cafes are very similar. It has plenty of seats for all kinds of groups, has a nice modern bar/till with condiment bars located around the space. This matches the specification and needs of a successful café.
ARCHI-CAD Third Floor
This is the final floor in my space and it is the café. Here you can see a small but cosy looking café sticking to the same theme and colourway as the rest of the building. This space has a bar/till section where you can buy various different foods and drinks, it has a condiment bar for you to help yourself to any essentials such as tissues and sauces etc. it also has many different seating layouts to suit different groups of people and finally some tv screens placed around the space to help you relax and to take your mind of studying also creating a more social atmosphere.
Here is a detailed look at the till/bar section with all the different essentials within the small space needed to make the snacks and drinks needed to make this café successful
Here is the condiment bar. There are 2, one located next to the bar and the other located at the back of the café next to the seating.
This image shows us some of the seating located in the café and how it is suitable for up to groups of 6.
CafĂŠ interior 3rd floor
Evaluation Overall I feel like this was a successful final out come as I feel like I fully developed all my ideas and combined them to produce a good looking final outcome that matches my brief and specification. It also has all of the themes I used as inspiration within either its exterior or its interior and there was a good amount of inspiration from the 3 successful architects that can be seen throughout my whole project. however if I was to do this project again I would try to limit the amount of secondary research as I feel like I had to much of it and I would replace it with more development from my primary research. But like I said I feel like this came out very well and I'm happy with the final solution.
