was born in 1882 in Brighton, Sussex. He studied in Chichester Technical Art School and later studied
Gill became frustrated with his studies and began studying stone masonry and calligraphy at Westminster Technical Institute. Eventually, he quit architecture entirely and became a
calligrapher, letter cutter, & monumental mason.

The original design for Gil Sans was created in 1926, strongly influenced by Edward Johnston’s London Underground lettering.
ABCDEF GHIJKLM It was first released as a set of capitals but a lowercase set followed soon after.
