DISCOVER The Language Centre Edge Hill University’s Language Centre aims to provide the highest quality English language courses to international students, general or academic, depending on student needs. The Language Centre is accredited by The British Council and BALEAP (The Global Forum for EAP Professionals). It is also a member of the AULC (The Association of University Language Communities in the UK and Ireland) and English UK. In addition, The Language Centre has been recognised as an EL Gazette Centre of Excellence for 2020-21 based on the number of strengths received in the British Council report. Pre-sessional English Language Course

The Pre-sessional English Language Course is for those wishing to progress to further academic study at Edge Hill University on either undergraduate or postgraduate courses (taught or research). This course is the ideal programme of study for you if you need to improve your academic skills, focus on your target discipline area and raise your overall English language level. The aims of the Pre-sessional course are: • to familiarise you with the expectations of academic study in higher education in the UK; • to improve your academic skills in writing, reading, listening and speaking; • to provide a full orientation to the learning facilities at Edge Hill; • to familiarize you with life on campus; • to increase your conﬁdence for entry on to your academic course; • to increase your overall communicative conﬁdence in English What will I study? International Foundation Programme

The International Foundation Programme has been specifically developed for international students who want to study for an undergraduate degree but do not possess British A level qualifications (Year 13) or equivalent. You may have just finished, or be about to finish, your studies in high school and be looking for a programme that will provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for undergraduate study and develop your study skills. The programme offers two routes. Route A is for those who need to improve their International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score and includes more language development. Route B is for those who have a higher level of English Language but need to improve their knowledge of their target discipline. What will I study? You will be introduced to the subject area you have chosen for your degree studies and will develop the academic and critical thinking skills required for success at this level. You will also advance your English language skills. Example modules: • Critical Analysis and Systematic Thinking for Higher Education • English Grammar and Pronunciation • Developing Academic Study Skills • General English • Introduction to Subject/Discipline Studies • Academic Writing • English Literacy What are my career prospects? Your English Language ability will be equivalent to at least IELTS 6.0 on successful completion of the programme, with no individual element below 5.5, which will allow you to progress to degree level study in selected subject areas. The available subject areas include accountancy, advertising, animation, business and management, computing, education, English, health, law, media and psychology.

DISCOVER Research Degrees Edge Hill is home to a thriving, dynamic research culture and offers a wide range of full-time and part-time research degrees. The University performed strongly in the national Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, with all subject areas featuring ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world-leading’ research and research funding subsequently increasing. Staff in all subject areas across the University are engaged in research and there are a number of research institutes which bring together staff from different departments, alongside visiting professors and professionals from external organisations. This range of expertise ensures that research degrees can be pursued in the majority of subjects offered by Edge Hill University.

Edge Hill University offers 2 routes to a research degree for international students: Masters by Research (MRes) – full-time 1 year; part-time 1.5 years Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – full-time 3 years; part-time 4.5. Part-time PhD applications must be approved by the PVC Research prior to interview. Your time will be primarily spent conducting research. You will acquire the knowledge and skills to help you design and conduct your research project, evaluate the research, and disseminate your results. In doing so, you will develop a range of transferable skills which can help you with further research within or outside academia, including critical thinking, project management, time management and presentation. OUR LOCATION in the Heart of the North West of England Edge Hill University is located close to the cities of Liverpool, Manchester and their international airports are both within easy reach. Travelling to campus is easy and fast, as is visiting destinations in Europe if you would like to do some sightseeing. Trains run from Ormskirk to Liverpool up to every 15 minutes each weekday and up to every 30 minutes at weekends, getting you to the vibrant, city centre of Liverpool in 30 minutes. National bus and rail links combine with a local dedicated bus service which operates throughout the day from the campus to Ormskirk town centre.

DISCOVER Ormskirk A Home from Home

Edge Hill University is close to the historic town of Ormskirk. Since the establishment of the market via Edward I’s royal charter in 1286, the town has thrived, and boasts national train and bus connections, beautiful parks, lively nightlife, and a busy high street with shops, banks, and cafés, while the bustling market still appears twice a week.

Aside from selecting your course, where you live while at university is the most important decision you will make. Our students appreciate the supportive, sociable and welcoming atmosphere that life in our University-owned halls of residence offers. Halls of Residence As a campus-based university you will ﬁnd everything you need within a few minutes’ walk when you live in one of our 2,500 study rooms. You can walk to your lecture or seminar, make use of the sports centre, theatre, cinema, cafés, restaurants, laundrette and shops, study in the library or one of the many academic buildings, or drop by the Students’ Union. With rooms from as little as £60 per week, our student accommodation has been awarded the Best Value for Money, and recognised as a ﬁnalist in the Best University Halls in the UK and Ireland, in the National Student Housing Awards 2019.

GLOBAL OPPORTUNITIES Study Abroad Spending time studying outside the UK during your degree will not only broaden your cultural and social horizons, developing your skills and conﬁdence, but also enrich your academic studies as you explore a new country and culture, networking and making new friends.

WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES Sandwich Year Many of our degrees offer an optional sandwich year, subject to ﬁnding and applying for a suitable opportunity, usually after the second year of your degree.

Study abroad options within your course can include semesters or a year abroad and are available on degrees with this symbol . There is a competitive application process for these opportunities.

Sandwich year opportunities are usually 9-12 month full-time placements where you gain hands-on experience in a real work environment. In some instances you will be a paid employee and assigned a range of duties and responsibilities. Some other positions are unpaid.

Students’ Union Edge Hill Students’ Union (SU) is an independent organisation that is entirely shaped by our students. All full fee-paying international students applying for a course lasting at least one academic year will be considered for a scholarship. Fieldwork These degrees feature a period of compulsory and/or optional fieldwork which students find beneficial and enjoyable. Fieldwork activities can be both residential and non-residential and take place overseas as well as in the UK.

Professional Practice Placements Some programmes include compulsory practice placements as an essential part of your degree. These are to meet the requirements of professional and regulatory bodies, or to provide the essential skills and experience to obtain your qualiﬁcation.

HOW TO APPLY

When Should I Apply? As early as possible, even if you do not have your ﬁnal results or all required certiﬁcates and transcripts in hand. You must allow a minimum of two months between your application and your arrival and enrolment at Edge Hill University.

How Should I Apply? For Undergraduate degrees, applications are made via UCAS. You will need to register to apply and there are specific deadlines you need to adhere to. www.ucas.com For Postgraduate Taught Degrees, you can also apply online directly to Edge Hill University at: edgehill.ac.uk/study/apply/applying-directly. You will need to include the following: - University transcripts and/or school transcripts and certificates - One academic reference (or in exceptional circumstances a work reference) - English Language certificate (where required) If you are unable to access the internet to apply online please contact: international@edgehill.ac.uk.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS For those students whose native language is not English, you will need to provide evidence of a Secure English Language Test (SELT) or equivalent*.

If your current level of English is lower than our minimum requirement, you may still be offered a place on the course you have applied for with full attendance on our Pre-Sessional English Course.

VISA INFORMATION AND ADVICE Edge Hill will provide you with help and advice at all stages of your visa application process. Unless you are a UK or Irish national, or have an existing immigration status1 that allows you to study in the UK, you will need to apply for a Student Route visa before you travel2 to study a course of six months or longer. To be able to apply for your student visa, you will need to have first met our visa-sponsorship3 requirements. These include having: Accepted an unconditional offer for your course; Paid 50% of your tuition fees for your first year; Met all the relevant UKVI requirements such as English language, finance, academic progress, time-caps and credibility. If you are coming to study for no more than six months then you can apply for a Visitor visa. For this, we will provide a letter for you that confirms you have accepted an unconditional offer. 1. Examples of an existing immigration status that allows study: Indeﬁnite Leave to Remain; Settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, including family members; A Points-Based-System Dependant visa; A work-related visa (we would usually only allow part-time study). We will need to conﬁrm your immigration status before you enrol on a course. 2. If you are already in the UK, then we will need to check to see if you can apply in the UK for your visa. If you can, then you will need to have applied before you enrol on your course. 3. As your visa sponsors, we are required to monitor your engagement and progress throughout your studies and report any breaches of your visa conditions to the UKVI, including the limits on part-time work.
