Parliamentary Procedures Made Easy
Parliamentary procedure is a term many believe limited to government associations. However, nonprofit leaders cannot afford to be ignorant of parliamentary procedure basics. Courts have held that organizations are subject to the principles of parliamentary law if they don’t have procedural policies of their own. As a result, ignoring or incorrectly applying parliamentary procedure can lead to embarrassment and lawsuits. This seminar will cover: • Purpose of Parliamentary Procedures • General Principles of Parliamentary Procedures • Standard Agenda • Precedence of Motions • Procedures in taking minutes The seminar will make reference throughout the presen15
tation on the role of the moderator/chairperson/president. All boards are required to use rules of order, and your bylaws state these rules will be followed. Don’t get embarrassed with the misuse or non-use of parliamentary procedures. 8/11 Tues 6pm-8pm

How to Start a Non-profit Business
Board meetings are not just about information, but also “transformation.” Organizations will rise or fall as a direct result of a functional or dysfunctional Board. This seminar focuses primarily on some practical tips and tools, rather than the latest research that can bring about “transformational change,” in Boards. Government agencies, Foundations, and individual donors and other potential supporters and funders want information concerning Boards. What they discover might make the difference between receiving their support and or funds, or not. Topics we will cover include: 1. What a Healthy Board Looks Like 2. Board Roles and Responsibilities (a.) Fiduciary (b.) Liabilities 3. Strategic Planning 4. How to Diagnose Problems Rather Than Focus on Symptoms 5. How to Evaluate the Board Performance 6. How to Ensure Full Participation of Board Members Don’t miss this opportunity to develop or restore your Board. 9/3 Thurs 12pm-2pm
There is a tremendous interest coming from our communities of wanting to know how to form a non-profit business. Careful consideration should be given to this quest, and much attention needs to be given to the proper steps to take. Failure to do so could result in serious consequences for individuals as well as becoming detrimental to the original cause for which the non-profit was designed. If you are considering starting a non-profit business, please plan to attend this very informative seminar. Participants will discover: • Basics on what a non-profit business is • Refine the definition of a non-profit • Issues to consider before starting a non-profit • Key steps in forming a non-profit • Forms and documents needed to be filed • What takes place at the first board meeting • Do you need an attorney? 8/25 Tues 6pm-8pm
How to Write a Business Plan for Non-profits
The business plan is the blueprint for your business. You wouldn’t walk over to an empty lot and just start nailing boards together if you wanted to build a house. Starting a business without a business plan is unwise. Writing a business plan is the best way to test whether or not an idea for starting a business is feasible, other than going out and doing it. In this sense, the business plan is your safety net; writing a business plan can save you a great deal of time and money if working through the business plan reveals that your business idea is untenable. Often, an idea for starting a business is discarded at the marketing analysis or competitive analysis stage, freeing you to move on to a new (and better) idea. Join us for this informative seminar. Contents for the seminar will include: • An overview of the industry sector that your business will be a part of • An examination of the primary target market for your product or service • An investigation of your direct and indirect competitors • A detailed explanation of your sales strategy, pricing plan, proposed advertising and promotion activities, and product or service’s benefits. • An outline of your business’s legal structure. 16
A description of your business’s physical location, facilities and equipment, and kinds of employees needed. 9/1 Tues 6pm-8pm
How to Restore or Develop a Board that’s on Board
How to Develop or Restore Bylaws for a Non-profit
Bylaws are a legal document outlining the self-imposed rules that will regulate an organization’s own actions. Since it is a required element when forming a corporation, bylaws are a form of agreement or contract between the corporation and its owners to conduct itself in a certain manner. In the past, organizations often had bylaws, but today those bylaws are usually insufficient. This seminar will offer participants the knowledge concerning: • 10 Most Common Non-profit Bylaw Pitfalls: How to Avoid the Traps • Required Provisions Normally Included in Nonprofit Bylaws Keep in mind that when starting a Non-profit business, the organization does not formally exist until the bylaws have been approved by the governing body of the organization. 9/8 Tues 12pm-2pm
How to Develop a Budget for a Non-profit
Non-profit organizations have limited resources and repEDGECOMBE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
resent funds entrusted to their organization; officers have a fiduciary responsibility to make sure that every dime of this money is spent wisely. Spending money and spending it wisely is not the same. No matter who or what the organizations, all have one thing in common: the need to achieve their goals and objectives with limited resources. This 3-hour seminar is designed to assist non-profit directors and officers to develop budgeting skills necessary to reach their full potential. 9/15 Tues 12pm-2pm
Fundamentals of Fundraising
What your non-profit does – your programs – is the highest priority for any non-profit manager. Revenue generation is second. New ways for non-profits to raise revenue spring into existence every year, but where those funds come from stays pretty much the same year after year. There is also a basic inventory of methods that should form the backbone of your fundraising efforts. These are, literally, your “bread and butter.” Come and learn more of “how to put the funds into your fundraising efforts.” • Ten essentials you need to know concerning fundraising • 8 ways to raise $2,500 (or more) in 10 days (or less) • Writing a donation letter that seals the deal • Ongoing vs. episodic funding • What does an online donor look like? 9/24 Thurs 12pm-2pm
Grant Writing 101 – How to Write Grants
Don’t let the process of writing a grant scare you away from potential funding. This basic 2-hour course is designed to encourage and build confidence of current and potential non-profit leaders concerning the process of grant writing. If you’re looking for a place to begin, or you want to investigate what is involved in the grant writing process, this seminar is for you. Bring your board members or potential board members, directors, and volunteers. Issues covered during our time together will include: Grant Writing 101: 1. Planning: deciding what type of grant is needed 2. Preparation: gathering all of the information needed to include in a grant 3. Introduction to a Project Logic Model used in present grant proposals 9/29 Tues 6pm-8pm
Grant Writing 102 – How & Where to Find a Grant
as the presenter actually, via the internet, accesses a searchable database of private grantmakers that accept inquiries and proposals from a variety of organizations; federal deadlines; links to state funding agencies; and a growing database of international grantmakers. Grant Writing 102: 4. Discussing and understanding the project logic model 5. Proposal: using the correct format in writing the grant 6. Provider: knowing where to look for the provider that’s right for you. 10/1 Thurs 6pm-8pm
How to Do the 501 (c)(3) Thing – Completing your 1023 Form The benefits of 501(c)(3) status and the ability to apply for government and foundation grants can be vital to the success of your non-profit organization. IRS receives tens of thousands of them each year! In 2008, one IRS official estimated that organizations not represented by attorneys, accountants, or other tax professionals account for 70% of the exemption applications submitted. (This is down from a similar estimate of 85% in 2002.) This seminar will carefully guide individuals through the 1023 form and provide vital information concerning how to respond to statements and questions needed to satisfy IRS reviewers. 10/20 Tues 6pm-8pm
Volunteers, How to Get and Keep Them
Is now the golden age of volunteerism? More people than ever want to give back to their communities, and volunteer work is encouraged, from the halls of congress to the words and images in the media. Now could be the very best time to take a look at your volunteer program and spiff it up so that your volunteers will want to come and stay. But volunteerism has changed and volunteer expectations have evolved. This seminar will provide you with knowledge of a few things today’s volunteers have a right to expect from you. Master these and you will have happy volunteers. Anyone who is willing to volunteer for an organization is likely to have a healthy curiosity and willingness to try new things. Indeed, many volunteers get involved with causes just so they can learn new skills or explore interesting topics and issues. Provide that opportunity. Turning your volunteer job into a mini-educational experience will be highly valued by potential volunteers and will likely result in referrals as your volunteers tell others about what a great experience they are having. 11/3 Tues 12pm-2pm
This seminar is designed to demonstrate how to use the logic model, introduced in Grant Writing 101, which is used to match an organization’s values, goals, and objectives with potential grant providers. This will be done FALL 2020

ECC Cultivates New Program in Agribusiness
he local agriculture community will soon be strengthened by a new degree program in Agribusiness Technology at Edgecombe Community College. “Edgecombe is a highly rural, agriculture-based county, and we have seen growing interest from the community in agriculture-related education and training,” explains Dr. Johnica Ellis-Kiser, chair of Business Administration. The Agribusiness Technology program falls under oversight of Business Administration. Estimates from Edgecombe County’s extension office note more than 3,500 jobs in agribusiness, not including seasonal workers. “We also have strong FFA chapters in Edgecombe, and these students are interested in pursuing degrees in agriculture,” explains Dr. Ellis-Kiser, who has a background in farming. FFA is an organization for students interested in agriculture. The Agribusiness Technology program, which begins this fall, will provide students with a strong background in sustainable farming, farm management, crop production, farm maintenance, animal science, and horticultural science. ECC offers a five-semester degree program, a three-semester diploma program, and certificates in agriculture, animal science, and horticulture that can be earned in two semesters. In addition, certificate programs in agribusiness and animal science are available for Edgecombe high school students. These credentials at the high school level can

be applied toward the College’s program in Agribusiness Technology. Students will be able to pursue traditional careers in farm operations as well as leading edge professions in agriculture technology. For students who wish to pursue four-year degrees in agriculture, College officials are working with several area universities to create transfer partnerships so that ECC students can complete the Agribusiness Technology degree and transfer to an agriculture program as a junior at a four-year university. The program also will stimulate and support economic growth in the Edgecombe area. According to area agriculture experts, the local demand for produce and vegetable truck farms continues to grow. Ag-related businesses in Edgecombe County include Green Leaf Nursey, one of the nation’s largest wholesale nursery growers, as well as a turf grass company, fertilizer and chemical dealers, farming operations, and swine and poultry operations. “All of these businesses need employees who understand agribusiness,” Dr. EllisKiser says. “We are working with several of these companies to create work-based learning opportunities for our students, and we will be planning field trips to expose our students to the wide variety of ag-related industries in our area.” To learn more about the new Agribusiness Technology program at ECC, please contact Dr. EllisKiser at ellisj@edgecombe.edu.

In addition to relevant skills, employers seek employees who have the personal values, characteristics, and personality traits that spell success. North Carolina’s Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) is designed to meet the needs of both employers and job seekers in this transitioning economy. WorkKeys is a job skills assessment system measuring “real world” skills employers believe are critical to job success. These skills are valuable for any occupation, skilled or professional, and at any level of education. • For employers, the CRC offers a reliable means of determining whether a potential employee has the necessary literacy, numeracy and problem solving skills to be “job ready.” • For job seekers, the CRC serves as a portable credential that can be more meaningful to employers than a high school degree or a resume citing experience in a different job setting. • The CRC is based on WorkKeys, a nationally recognized, skills assessment tool developed by ACT Inc. WorkKeys Assessments measure the current skills of individuals in four key areas: 1. Reading for Information (testing time 55 minutes) The Reading for Information test measures the skill people use when they read and use written text in order to do a job. The written texts include memos, letters, directions, signs, notices, bulletins, policies, and regulations. 2. Applied Mathematics (testing time 55 minutes) The Applied Mathematics test measures the skills people EDGECOMBE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
use when they apply mathematical reasoning and problem-solving techniques to work-related problems. The test questions require the examinee to set up and solve the types of problems and do the types of calculations that actually occur in the workplace. 3. Locating Information (testing time 55 minutes) The Locating Information test measures the skill people use when they work with workplace graphics such as charts, graphs, tables, forms, flowcharts, diagrams, floor plans, maps, and instrument gauges. 4. Applied Technology (testing time 45 minutes) The Applied Technology test measures the skill people use when they solve problems with machines and equipment found in the workplace. This skill includes four areas of technology: electricity, mechanics, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics. Please check CRC testing dates on edgecombe.edu/ resources/crc/career-readiness-certificate-testing-dates/, then register by email by sending your name, address, telephone number, and desired testing date to: Debra Glover, (252) 618-6617 gloverd@edgecombe.edu
