IT COULD HAPPEN Dabawenyos warned on Covid-19 mega surge

By MAYA M. PADILLO he Davao City Cpovid-19 Task Force raised the warning on a possible mega surge of Covid-19 following the long weekend break due to the observance of Holy Week;

T

The long Lenten weekend traditionally see a number of Davao residents travel out of town. Davao City Covid-19 Task Force focal person Dr. Ashley Lopez said the city government of Davao has already made a contingency plan in case a mega surge happens. “We have anticipat-

ed that this surge that happened in NCR and Cebu could happen in the whole country. This is also possible after the holy week,” Lopez said. Lopez said the preparations include reopening of temporarily closed isolation and quarantine facilities, temporary treatment and monitoring facilities (TTMF), staffing,

and encouraging private hospitals to participate and allocate hospital beds for Covid-19 patients. He said the Task Force has also started implementing the expanded mandatory testing of all close contacts in all levels of a Covid-19 positive patient. “When you say all levels, tanan nga possible close contacts, not only direct contacts like F1 but it involves also the second generation and third generation contacts. Atoa na siyang i-trace up so we could test them,” he said. Lopez said that the

Peace economy program, which is a component of peace initiatives in Davao City, has collaborated with NCCC Supermarket, Helen’s Farm, and the small farmers in Paquibato District. In the said partnership, Helen’s Farm, a social entrepreneur, will gather and consolidate the supply from the farm-

ers before it delivers the produce to the NCCC Supermarket. "At this time, padayon lang gihapon ang pagpalit sa NCCC sa ilang farm produce and the buying prices remain reasonably high," Lizada said. He added that there is also a need to work on the quality and timely harvest (scheduling) of the vegetables to avoid wastage. "USeP will present its plan to the Peace 911 General Committee in the coming days," he said. Lizada is referting to the state-run University of

more testing the city has, the more the Task Force can accurately assess the Covid-19 situation in Davao City. The Task Force is also implementing intensified case finding and influenza-like illness (ILI) and acute respiratory infections (ARI) surveillance. “Mao ni siya ang mga sipon, ubo, kalintura nga moabot og 38 degrees and last for about 10 days or more, “ he said. He urged Dabawenyos experiencing said illnesses to go to the nearest District Health Office for swab testing.

S

ocial entrepreneur movement Peace Economy is in discussion with a member of the Balik-Scientist program of the Department of Science and Technology 11 (DOST 11) to help the farmers in Paquibato District improve the standards and quality of their products. Peace Economy spokesperson Lizada said product standards, quality and volume of production are among the challenges being faced by the farmers. "I already talked to

Southeastern Philippines (USeP) that is eyeing to build an Annex in Malabog, Paquibato District to bring higher education nearer to Dabawenyos in far-flung areas. Peace Economy was launched on November 20, 2019 in the far-flung Paquibato District aiming to stimulate economic development based on the sharing of resources. It also aims to eliminate middlemen who make the trading of the farmers' produce more expensive. Maya M. Padillo

anking business leaders of the country are appealing to President Rodrigo R. Duterte and other top government officials to consider seriously the distribution of Ivermectin as medicine for the prevention and treatment of Covid 19. The appeal addressed to the President, Senate President Vicente Sotto III and House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco was contained in an open letter dated March 31, 2021 and signed by Sergio R. Otiz-Luis Jr., president of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, Jose Luis U. Yulo Jr., president of the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, former Senator Joey Lina, former Ambassador Benedicto V. Yujuico Jr., and former Agriculture Secretary Leonardo Montemayor, among many others, including Dabawenyo business leader Vicente T. Lao, chairman of the Mindanao Business Council. In the five-page letter, the group said “concretely, we respectfully request the President to direct the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Health (DOH), and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to: 1) Pro-actively look into the credible testimonials of a substantial number of Filipinos, including well-known members of Philippine society, and on the studies of several local and foreign medical researchers on the efficacy and safety of Ivermectin in preventing and treating Covid-19 cases, and 2) Issue the appropriate permit or authority to persons, natural or artificial, to manufacture, compound, import, distribute and sell Ivermectin.” The group also requested Congress to pass the appropriate legislation or resolution “to expedite the availability of and easy access to Ivermectin by the masses of our people.” In their open letter, the business leaders also discussed urgency of their request, the safety and efficacy Ivermectin, the low cost of the medicine, the legal basis of their appeal, and why emergency action is needed. URGENCY “We are in a severe public health emergency. Our people are dying in big numbers on a daily basis, and our hospitals can no longer accommodate those who are getting sick of the virus. The number of cases is growing bigger and bigger. Our people are desperate for a preventive and curative drug against Covid-19. SAFETY AND EFFICACY “There are well-founded reasons to believe that Ivermectin, repurposed as a human-grade drug

to prevent and treat Covid-19 cases, will do much good based on widespread testimonials and studies made on Ivermectin.” The business leaders claimed that “22 % of the world is already using Ivermectin to successfully fight Covid-19, according to the Concerned Doctors and Citizens of the Philippines (CDC Philippines), an advocate for the use of Ivermectin as a preventive and curative drug against Covid-19.” “Multiple studies and meta-analyses confirm the effectiveness of Ivermectin, a safe oral drug used for over 40 years for other illnesses in humans,” the business leaders said, quoting a recent statement of CDC Philippines. “In India, South Africa and many Latin American countries, Ivermectin is widely used as a Covid-19 drug,” they said. LOW COST The Filipino businessmen said that “ Remdesivir, the current drug being used to treat Covid-19infected patients, costs around P28,000 per vial and must be administered twice daily until the patient is discharged. This drug is beyond the means of the average Filipino, most especially the poor.” “Ivermectin, on the other hand, costs only around P35, has been sold over-the-counter for over 40 years and is generally administered daily for three days, which means a person only needs to spend a little over P100 for the entire treatment, “ the petitioners said, adding that “the preventive dose is only once every two weeks.” LEGAL BASIS Luis and company said that their appeal to President Duterte, Senate President Sotto and Speaker Velasco is anchored on constitutional policies stipulated in the 1987 Constitution. They are 1) Protection and promotion of the rights to health of the people (Section 15, Article II). 2) Respect for the role of independent people’s organizations to enabe the people to pursue and protect their legitimate and collective interests and and aspirations (Section 15, Article XIII) and 3) The right of the people and their organizations to an effective and reasonable participation at all levels of social, political and economic decision-making. EMERGENCY ACTION NEEDED “With the sufficient vaccine supply against Covid-19 still forthcoming,” the businessmen said, “the present health crisis calls for urgent and decisive action by government to provide a low-

Peace will tap big economic potentials: Mindanao exec T

Pandemic sharpens inequalities and could fuel unrest, warns IMF

A

leading civil executive in Southern Philippines has expressed the need for long-term stability in the region so that this may pave the way for investments in fields like trade and maritime development.

This, according to lawyer Naguib Sinarimbo, spokesperson for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), in a recent video statement on Muslim Mindanao’s vast potentials for economic development. Initial oil exploration works are ongoing “in the Sulu Sea and the Moro Gulf, as well as in the Liguasan Marsh,” said Sinarimbo, who concurrently serves as the BARMM’s Minister of the Interior and Local Government. All three areas have been considered by multiple scientific sources as

“resource-rich” in terms of maritime as well as mineral assets. “These resources can actually be exploited and developed and become beneficial to the constituents of the region as well as the world,” he said. He, however, added that “what we need is, of course, a stable peace and security in the region so that we can exploit all of these potentials.” He said BARMM “sits strategically in the South China Sea and the Pacific through which a substantial volume of cargo passes through.”

These cargoes may come from nearby Australia and proceeding to China, he said, or China-made products finding their way to Europe. Whatever the origin or destination and given the right infrastructure and policy support, he added, more of these goods should pass through the internationally-recognized Sibutu Strait off Tawi-Tawi. Civil and military sources in 2019 estimated that the Sibutu Strait, which lies between the Sulu Archipelago and Indonesia’s Borneo, was host to some $51 billion worth of sea cargo every year. “This can be exploited through the development of a logistics hub not just for this region but for the country. So this offers a lot of potentials,” Sinarimbo said. A Bangsamoro Organic Law was signed into law in

2018 by President Duterte. This effectively laid the ground for the rebuilding of institutional structures for civil governance. Yet, the transition from war to peace has not been easy, given the demands of bureaucracy. A source, who requested anonymity, said, “building the capability to effectively govern takes time. It is a tight balancing act given the challenges of pursuing equitable development in the region.” To date, both Muslim and Christian leaders in the Congress, academe, Church, and grassroots organizations are united in calling for an extension of the transition period from the old to the new autonomous government. Over a million signatures in support of the call have so far been gathered online. (PR)

he coronavirus pandemic has worsened long-standing inequalities around the world, which left unaddressed could undermine economic stability and lead to unrest, the IMF warned on Thursday. Poorest families have been hit particularly hard, and the damage to education could last for years, the International Monetary Fund said in a report released ahead of next week's Spring meetings. The findings show that the warnings fund economists sounded last year have come to pass. "COVID-19 has exposed and exacerbated preexisting inequalities in incomes and access to basic public services, such as health care and vaccination, both within and across countries," the report said. "Disruptions to education threaten social mobility by leaving long-lasting effects on children and youth, especially those from poorer households." Increasing reliance on digital work and schooling worsen the impact, making it harder for lowskilled workers to find jobs. "Against this backdrop, societies may experience rising polarization, erosion of trust in government, or social unrest," the IMF said. The report -- released a day after US President Joe Biden proposed rais-

ing corporate taxes to pay for a massive infrastructure and jobs program -- called for raising some taxes and improving tax collection to provide revenue for an improved social safety net. Authors David Amaglobeli, Vitor Gaspar, and Paolo Mauro in a blog post called for governments to "give everyone a fair shot at prosperity," by improving access to health care, vaccinations, education and good jobs. They suggested countries could rely more on property and inheritance taxes, increase the tax rate for the wealthiest earners, and eliminate loopholes as well as "modernizing corporate income taxation." Governments also could consider "temporary COVID-19 recovery contributions" for high-income households, they said. Using these funds for key social programs can have "a powerful effect" at a time when "up to six million children in emerging market and developing economies could drop out of school in 2021, with lifelong adverse consequences." "If governments increased spending on education by one percent of GDP, for example, they could reduce the gap in enrollment rates between the richest and the poorest families by almost onethird," the authors said.

Vaccination program to balance health, economy amid pandemic

P

residential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion believes that the only way to balance health and economy amid the global health crisis is through the immunization program. During the Kapihan sa Manila Bay virtual forum Wednesday, Concepcion said the back and forth lockdown and reopening of economic activities, and staying in the middle of lives and livelihood is “extremely difficult” for Filipinos. “Wearing face masks and face shields is very important to maintain and contain the infection level, but it’s not really the solution to our economic problem today,” he said. Concepcion said the health problem can only be solved by the vaccines that are arriving in the country, helping Filipinos to get protection from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). “As we manage the health situation through the deployment of the vaccine, then we can see us being able to at least keep the economy open and running. The only way we can only balance much better lives and livelihood is through the vaccine,” he added. However, Concepcion admitted that the challenge

for the government is convincing the people to get vaccinated. “For us to be able to win this war, we really have to get our citizens vaccinated and hopefully all of them will want to be vaccinated, regardless of whatever brand, it’s better to have protection than no protection,” he added. Concepcion said vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. told him that the vaccine donation of the private sector could be directed to a particular sector. He added the private sector has formalized the request to the government to focus half of the vaccine donation to Metro Manila, particularly for micro and small entrepreneurs who are not capable of buying their own vaccines. “So moving forward, I believe that we still have the chance in really bringing back the economic momentum in full upswing, and I believe the fourth quarter is the quarter that we can really push,” Concepcion said. He cited consumer spending during the Christmas season, the start of election spending, and the impact of the inoculation program with the arrival of the bulk of the Covid-19 vaccines in the second half of the year. Mandatory use of PRN for short-term loan payments moved to May 1: SSS

T

he Social Security System (SSS) announced that the mandatory use of computer-generated payment reference number (PRN) for short-term loan payments was moved to May 1 from its original April 1 schedule. In a statement, SSS president and CEO Aurora Ignacio said the pension fund’s management approved the one-month extension to provide members and employers extra time to create their My.SSS accounts, update contact information, as well as review their loan information. “We wanted to make sure that our stakeholders are ready to comply with our upcoming procedural and system changes so that they can also benefit from this program and realize its importance,” Ignacio said. Under the Real-Time Processing of Loans (RTPL), individual members - self-employed, voluntary, and Overseas Filipino Workers - and employers will use the system-generated PRN to facilitate the immediate and correct posting of loan payments on their corresponding records. Covered short-term loans under the RTPL implementation are salary, calamity, emergency, and restructured loans. “Individual members and employers can either print out a copy or capture a screenshot of the PRN Loans Statement of Account with the corresponding barcode, accessed through the “RTPL

PRN” module of their My.SSS accounts are found on the SSS website. They may also present the SMS received from SSS indicating the PRN for loan payment,” Ignacio said. Members and employers can also change the amount to be paid in the said statement through their My.SSS accounts. However, employers are required to submit an electronic-Loan Collection List (e-LCL), which can be downloaded from the SSS accounts for offline editing before submission. The complete process flow of RTPL implementation can be accessed through this link: https:// bit.ly/3u5NQIr according to the SSS. It said that payees should present their PRN at SSS branches with Automated Tellering System (ATS) or any RTPL-compliant collecting partners. For the complete list of RTPL-compliant partners, access the link https://bit. ly/3cCGXs3. “This is to reiterate that starting May 1, RTPL-compliant SSS collecting partners will only accept loan payments with PRN to avoid possible system errors. Members and employers will receive a notification through email or SMS confirming their loan payment and successful posting,” Ignacio said. The SSS launched the RTPL program in November 2019 as part of its compliance with the President of the Philippines’ directive to digitize business processes, in line with the Ease of Doing Business Act of 2018.

Sarangani’s tourist arrivals picking up

T

ourist arrivals in Sarangani province have been increasing since the last quarter of 2020 despite the restrictions meant to curb the spread of COVID-19, an official said. Sarangani tourism officer April Marjorie Rudes said that from January to February this year, arrivals, mostly from neighboring Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, Cotabato City and Davao Region, reached 186,770. She said this is an encouraging indication that the industry can recover from its losses due to the pandemic in 2020. Tourist arrivals in Sarangani went down from almost 1.6 million in 2019 to 498,131 in 2020. Revenue earned is simply computed at 1,000 pesos per head per day. Sarangani is a famous destination among local and foreign tourists for its pristine inland resorts and white sand beaches. But even with the influx of tourists officials in the province have no plans to

hold the popular Sarangani Bay Festival (SarBay Fest), the yearly May event that earned the title “Mindanao’s largest beach party,” drawing foreign and domestic partygoers from all over. “We are not talking about it, much less of any plan to have it this year,” Rudes said. She added that officials in the province would rather use money to help address the effects of the pandemic than on SarBay Fest. For the Holy Week, Rudes said resort facilities in the province have been jam-packed with advance bookings since a week ago yet. An emerging favorite spot is the Alta Vista Resort in Alabel town, where most bikers and city dwellers enjoy an astonishing deck

view of this city and Sarangani Bay. Rudes, however, pointed out, that resort operators in the province, in following protocols set by health authorities, have not been accepting “walk-in clients” since late last year. Tourists have to show their booking slips and contact-tracing QR codes at the checkpoint before they may enter the province. Aside from a unified protocol imposed by the provincial government, each town in the province has their own sets of guidelines to ensure the safety of residents and guests. In the tourist town of Glan where vacationers usually flock in Gumasa, a coastal stretch with white powdery sand, resort owners face stiff penalties if they violate the strict health protocols and regulations imposed by the local government. Glan Mayor Dr. Vivien Yap said they are serious and will shut down erring resort facilities and have their business permits can-

celed if found violating the health protocols and regulations. Last year, Yap ordered the month-long shutdown of a popular beach hotel in barangay Taluya of the town for twice hosting a mass gathering that exceeded the limit on capacity. Rudes said teams from the police and local government roam around, making sure that tour facilities are properly observing anti-COVID-19 health regulations and protocols. A health worker in the town said they cannot afford to let their guard down just because the tourism industry has shown signs of recovery. As regulations dictate, Rudes said resort owners are to strictly follow the 50-percent limit on capacity. The popular Tuka Marine Park in Kiamba town can only allow 150 to 200 tourists on any given day. It used to have an average of 500 guests per day. (Rommel G Rebollido/MindaNews)

"LandBank remains committed in balancing service delivery and safety, by providing secure and convenient digital banking solutions while promoting health protection," LandBank President and Chief Executive Officer Cecilia Borromeo said in the advisory. "We continue to urge our clients to utilize our online banking platforms and make cashless transactions, especially at this time when COVID-19 cases

are rising," she added. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) launched InstaPay in April 2018, an electronic fund transfer (EFT) payment system that enables individuals to wire funds across banks in real-time. Meanwhile, PESONet was launched in 2017, enabling the government, businesses, and individuals to initiate electronic fund transfers and recurring payments in financial institutions supervised by

the central bank within the same banking day. NCR Plus -- Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, and Bulacan -- has been under ECQ from midnight March 29 and will last until Sunday, April 4, 2021. No guidance has been given what follows. Prior to the announcement of the ECQ, the government banned the non-essential entry and exit into the NCR Plus bubble during the same period.

LandBank extends waiver of interbank fees until June 30

he Land Bank of the Philippines on Wednesday announced a three-month extension of the waiver of fees for online fund transfers of retail clients, which was earlier set to lapse on March 31. In an advisory, LandBank said interbank fees will be waived until June 30, 2021. This covers online fund transfers made through the lender's online banking channels via InstaPay and PESONet.

EDITORIAL Extreme caution Amid the arrival of vaccines in the Philippines and the start of rollout of nationwide vaccination, the country was jarred by the biggest punch Covid-19 made by far. For three straight days, the numbers were overwhelming-from over 9,000 to over 15,000 and over 12,000 on Saturday. The virus has practically hit everyone like a common cold. On Saturday, the Philippines logged an additional 12,576 COVID-19 cases, the second highest single-day tally since the start of the pandemic, with active infections breaching the 165,000-mark, straining hospitals in virus hotspots. With the new cases, the country’s total number of infections went up to 784,043. It does not include, however, results from 7 laboratories that failed to submit data on time. A this point, the country’s remaining active infections is at 165,715 and it is the highest in Southeast Asia. For the record, Saturday’s figures were the 5th-straight day

that the number of active cases reached an all-time high. Of those who tested positive, 96.5 percent are experiencing mild symptoms while only 2.2 percent are asymptomatic of the disease based on the latest Department of Health (DOH) bulletin. It is also worthy to note that so far, a total of 103 individuals succumbed to the virus, pushing the country’s death toll to 13,423 -- it is the highest since Wednesday when the health department tallied 106 deaths. Definitely, these are very worrisome numbers. At this point, regardless of the rollout of vaccines -- which may have also in part contributed to the complacency -the risk is still very high out there. And while people await for their turn to get inoculated, it is best to stay as safe as possible. By that we mean, extreme observance to protocols. Repeat, extreme observance. FRED C. LUMBA SPECKS OF LIFE

IVERMECTIN’S EFFICACY VS COVID 19 “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” (Mark Twain) I am not happy with the present state of affairs as regards the (mis) handling and (mis) management of CoVid 19 and all the proposed solutions offered by the IATF. First of all, with due respect, the IATF is not composed of medical experts and most of its members belong to the civilian sector - Cabinet members who are either lawyers or retired military officers. (I am at my wit’s end as to why the Philippine Medical Association, the governing body of all practicing medical doctors in every field in the Philippines, has not been tapped up to this writing. I believe their expertise has to be fervently sought instead of relying on the DOH and FDA who do nothing but recite the number of Covid cases arising day to day.) I heard the oral testimony of Anak Kalusugan partylist

congressman Michael Defensor who was a victim and sufferer of CoVid 19. Defensor very clearly enunciated how he recovered from the virus by taking a regular dose of Ivermectin. Defensor declared that not only is Ivermectin effective against the China virus, it is also cheap. He said he bought Ivermectin at P35 per tablet. (By the way, I also saw a video of 98-year former senator Juan Ponce Enrile swallowing the Ivermectin pill.) Ivermectin is an antiparasitic pill used by veterinarians for animals sick with parasites inside their bodies. I also heard a news interview of Dr. Allan Landrito, connected with Muntinlupa City as medical officer, who is the proponent and advocate of Ivermectin as the drug to cure the Wuhan pathogen. Landrito has prescribed Ivermectin to some 8,000 patients who have recovered from the vi-

rus,

Defensor has challenged the FDA (Usec. Eric Domingo) and the national government to be more proactive, instead of waiting in his air conditioned executive office for Landrito to submit his application for the government’s permission to allow Ivermectin to be locally produced and purchased in the Philippines. Defensor strongly recommends to the national government - the DOH, FDA, IATF - to try Ivermectin because he is the strongest example of a CoVid 19 victim who recovered completely and is now healthy and well. The World Health Organization has not been very appreciative of the efficacy of Ivermectin and continues to deny its use by expressing that a more extensive study be conducted. But the WHO has been endorsing the vaccination of everyone when the vaccines available in the market do not and cannot guarantee that those vaccinated will not get infected by CoVid 19

anymore. (In fact, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US President’s chief medical consultant, even has advised that a second face mask be used even after getting vaccinated. What????. Fauci is remembered as the same guy who, as head of the National Institute of Health during the Obama administration, facilitated the grant of $3.7M to the Wuhan Institute of Virology where analysts, observers and experts said the virus was accidentally leaked or escaped from.) By virtue of Defensor’s testimony, the credibility of DOH and the IATF is again placed under microscopic scrutiny. Who among them can refute Defensor’s evidentiary declaration? The least that the FDA can do - as Defensor has challenged it to be more proactive - is to hasten the approval of Ivermectin as alternative CoVid 19 drug on Emergency Use Application. Actually, we are already gambling away our own lives by

allowing people who have no expertise on the treatment of this viral pandemic to become responsible to look out for medical solutions. CONTINUING LOCKDOWNS ONLY REFLECT THE INEFFICIENCY OF THE GOVERNMENT. FAMILIES ARE GETTING HUNGRY, BREADWINNERS ARE LOSING THEIR JOBS, CHILDREN OF SCHOOL AGE CANNOT GO TO SCHOOL FOR FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING AND INSTRUCTIONS, PEOPLE ARE GETTING SAD AND DESPERATE, ETC. Once and for all, government authorities should get rid of the “teka, teka muna” attitude. Positive thinking and a proactive mindset will clear away the humps and the stumbling blocks along the way. To conclude today’s piece, here is an advice from Nelson Mandela: “Where you stand depends on where you sit.” (Email your feedback to fredlumba@yahoo.com.) GOD BLESS THE PHILIPPINES!

HENRYLITO D. TACIO THINK ON THESE!

MARY MAGDALENE: FIRST WITNESS OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION Everyone was still sleeping. But Mary Magdalene along with other women – Mary the mother of James, and Salome (the mother of James and John) were already awake that early Sunday morning. They were all going to the burial site of Jesus Christ. Their main purpose: to sprinkle more spices on the corpse. Jesus, as a result of cardiac arrest when he was crucified, was buried on Friday afternoon. Since the following day was Sabbath, they were not allowed to do what they wanted to do. So, they planned to do it on a Sunday morning. Just after sunrise, the women went to the tomb. They were completely surprised by what they saw. They were wondering among themselves who would roll away the stone for them from the entrance to the tomb, when they looked up and saw that the stone, huge as it was, had been rolled back already. When they entered the tomb, they saw that the corpse was no longer there. Instead, they met a young man (actually an angel disguising as such), who told them: “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here.” Mary Magdalene was shocked hearing those words. She never thought Jesus would be raised from the dead – as He told them before. Although she was completely surprised by the turn of the event, she was not altogether happy. Who would believe them – a bunch of women who witnessed the missing body? The idea of women as primary witnesses does not seem very star-

tling to people in the 20th century, but it was a revolutionary concept at the time. In the first-century Palestine, women were on a very low run of the social ladder. There are old rabbinical sayings that said, “Let the words of the Law be burned rather than delivered to women” and “Blessed is he whose children are male, but woe to him whose children are female.” Perhaps no figure in history is as controversial or mysterious as Mary Magdalene. Although there are some records about Jewish society in ancient Palestine 2,000 years ago, very little is known about Mary. The Bible provides no personal details of her age, status or family. Mary means “wise woman” or “lady.” It is a Greek form of the Hebrew “Miriam” or “Mariamme,” and was the most popular woman’s name at the time of Jesus. Mary came from a town called Magdala, on the western side of the Sea of Galilee. That was the reason why she was called Mary Magdalene. Among the women who are specifically named in the New Testament, Mary Magdalene’s name is one of the most frequently found. In Matthew 27:56, the author names three women in sequence: “Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.” In the Gospel of Mark, the author lists a group of women three times, and each time, Mary Magdalene’s name appears first. Finally, in the Gospel of Luke, the author enumerates the women who went to the tomb of Jesus, writing that, “It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them,” which

once again places Mary Magdalene at the head of the list. The story of Mary Magdalene contains four different episodes. The Bible first featured her in Luke 8:1-3 as the leader of a group of women who provided for Jesus and his follower their own financial resources. Mary figured prominently on the last days of Jesus Christ. She was present at the crucifixion. In each of the four accounts, Mary was there, either standing at a distance with other women, or standing near the cross. After Jesus died, she watched as the dead body was sealed inside the tomb. She could confirm that he was really dead. She wanted to put the spices needed for the proper burial of the body but could not do so. According to Jewish law, ointments and spices could not be bought or sold on the Sabbath. Jesus’ death had been sudden, unexpected. The women did not have the necessary burial spices. So, they waited until the Sabbath was over, bought the spices, and went to the tomb on that early Sunday morning. And that was the reason why Mary Magdalene and the rest of the women witnessed the resurrection. When Mary saw the tomb was empty, she had a profound revelation where she “saw” and “heard” Jesus. She understood in a way that is not easily explained that Jesus was no longer dead, but alive. She experienced a message from God that gave her an unshakeable conviction that Jesus lived. As recorded in the New Testament, the resurrection became one of the most compelling doctrines of Christianity, because, according

to this doctrine, by rising from the dead, Jesus gave humanity hope of a life after death. “The resurrection was undoubtedly the central proclamation of the early church from the very beginning,” explained Dr. Gary Habermas, author of The Resurrection of Jesus: A Rational Inquiry. “The earliest Christians didn’t endorse Jesus’ teachings; they were convinced they had seen him alive after his crucifixion. That’s what changed their lives and started the church.” Theologian Gerald O’Collins puts it this way: “In a profound sense, Christianity without the resurrection is not simply Christianity without its final chapter. It is not Christianity at all.” Mary Magdalene was commissioned by the angel to “go and tell,” as an apostle to the apostles. Throughout the centuries, Mary Magdalene was wrongly portrayed in literature and art as a reformed prostitute. This happened because of several things: One, Mary Magdalene was confused with the woman with the alabaster jar, described in Luke 7:36-50; the story of this other woman came just before Mary Magdalene is first mentioned. The woman with the alabaster jar was called a “sinner,” but there was no reason to think that she was a prostitute; in fact, when Luke describes an actual prostitute in 15:30, he uses a different word. Mary Magdalene was described as having a serious illness, but the nature of the illness was unspecified; later celibate male writers linked Mary’s illness, her “demons,” with her sexuality which may have been a comment about their own demons, rather

than Mary’s. Finally, Mary Magdalene was traditionally presented as the sinful woman, a perfect foil for Mary of Nazareth, the virgin mother of Jesus Christ. It was because of this association of Mary as a prostitute that she became the patroness of “wayward women,” and “Magdalene houses” became established to help save women from prostitution. “The portrayal of Mary Magdalene as a prostitute began after a series of Easter sermons delivered in 591, when Pope Gregory I conflated Mary Magdalene, who is introduced in Luke 8:2, with Mary of Bethany (Luke 10:39) and the unnamed ‘sinful woman’ who anoints Jesus’s feet in Luke 7:36-50. This resulted in a widespread belief that she was a repentant prostitute or promiscuous woman,” Wikipedia states. For centuries, it has been the custom of many Christians to share dyed and painted eggs, particularly on Easter Sunday. The eggs represent new life, and Christ bursting forth from the tomb. One tradition concerning Mary Magdalene says that, following the death and resurrection of Jesus, she used her position to gain an invitation to a banquet given by Emperor Tiberius. When she met him, she held a plain egg in her hand and exclaimed, “Christ is risen!” Caesar laughed, and said that Christ rising from the dead was as likely as the egg in her hand turning red while she held it. Before he finished speaking, the egg in her hand turned a bright red, and she continued proclaiming the Gospel to the entire imperial house.

Seabass raising is a profitable venture I

By HENRYLITO D. TACIO

f you happen to visit Queensland, Australia, you may encounter some people talking about barramundi. This “largescaled river fish” as what the name literally means, was originally referred to as saratoga. But the new name stuck for marketing reasons during the 1980s, a decision which has aided in raising the profile of the fish significantly. Scientifically, the fish is called Lates calcarifer. Although it is also called Asian seabass, Australian seabass, and white seabass, it is actually a type of fish called a drum and not really a bass. Black seabass and striped bass are the real bass. “Seabasses vary widely in size, from a few centimeters to a maximum of 2 meters and 225 kilograms in such species as the goliath grouper and 2.7 meters and 400 kilograms in the giant grouper,” says the Britannica Encyclopedia. The popular lapu-lapu is a member of the groupers. Color also varies, both among and within species. “Some seabasses, for example, are able to change to any of several color patterns,” Britannica states. “In other species, the young may be patterned differently from the adults, and in still others individuals inhabiting deeper waters may be considerably redder than those of the same species living near shore.” But people who eat this kind of fish generally don’t care too much about sizes, colors, or classifications. If it tastes similar, cooks similarly, then it is similar and hence these are seabasses.

In Australia, the seabass is used to stock freshwater reservoirs as it is very popular for recreational fishing. Here in the Philippines, where the fish is locally known as apahap (other local names include kakap, bulgan, salongsong, katuyot, and matang pusa), it is highly prized in seafood restaurants because of its delectable taste. “Seabass is a highly sought-after fish because of its white meat,” says Rene B. Bocaya, the assistant vice-president for sales of Finfish Hatcheries, Inc. “It used to be a very popular game fish when its supply was still abundant from the wild. Now, it is mostly cultured.” The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations says seabass were historically cultured in coastal lagoons and tidal reservoirs before the race to develop the mass-production of juveniles started in the late 1960s. “Fish culture was initially associated with salt production in coastal evaporation pans and marshes,” FAO says. “The salt was harvested during the high evaporation season of summer

and autumn, and fish were cultured during winter and spring. The supply for this culture came from trapping schools of fish that lived in these estuarine areas.” In the Philippines, the Iloilo-based Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) leads in seabass grow-out culture. “Seabass is a species that is easy to culture in cages or in brackishwater ponds,” SEAFDEC says. “It is hardy, and the seedstock can be easily sourced from hatchery. There is a need, however, to include a nursery before the grow-out phase so that seabass can be easily sorted and size-graded to reduce competition for space and food, thus controlling cannibalism.”

The biggest expense for seabass culture is feed. This kind of fish is “carnivorous and must be fed with trash fish,” SEAFDEC says. “But there is already available high-protein formulated feeds that can be used for carnivorous species.” The SEAFDEC technology of raising seabass follows: · Stock seabass fry obtained from the hatchery in nursery cages set inside brackishwater ponds or in an estuary (mouth of the river). The net cage size may be 3 x 2 x 1.3 meters, and 600-900 pieces may be stocked. Take care to stock similar-sized fish already sorted and size-graded from the hatchery. Initial fry size is usually 1.0 to 2.5 centimeters, and the fry stays in the nursery for 30 to 45 days. Fed trash fish at 6-8% of biomass or use formulated feeds as recommended by the manufacturer. Sort and size-grade weekly. · Tr a n s f e r graded seabass to grow-out ponds or to growout cages. Stocking density is usually 4050 fish per square meter which is reduced to 10-

20 fish per square meter when seabasses are bigger. A one-hectare may be subdivided further into six compartments so that there is space to raise different batches of sorted and size-graded fish. A grow-out cage is bigger than nursery cages, about 4 x 4 x 3 meters. Be sure to have spare cages. · Feed trash fish, at 10% of total body weight. · Sort and size-grade regularly. In the pond, collect fish by using a net seine; in cages, simply lift the nets. Take care not to stress the fish. · Culture period varies, but is usually 3-4 months. The market size of seabass is 300-400 grams. Like most ventures, raisers also have to deal with diseases and parasites. “These can be prevented with proper evaluation of pond sites before the culture stage,” Bocaya says. “Good culture practices such as low stocking densities and regular monitoring of cultured stocks will further prevent future problems.” Another concern: “Since seabass is a predator fish, sustainability is a concern if it is not managed properly,” Bocaya says. “It can be cul-

tured with other fishes, like the prolific tilapia, it is used as a biological control.” Seabass has the potential to contribute to fisheries production in the country as it can be raised in captivity. In the past, one drawback was its scarcity of fry/fingerlings, which are available mostly in the wild. But such is not the case anymore. There are several hatcheries where raisers could buy their fry/fingerlings. One good source is the Finfish Hatcheries, Inc., whose hatchery is located in Lun Masla, Malapatan in Sarangani Province. “We sell only the fingerling size,” says Bocaya, a fishery expert who graduated from Bicol University. “With good market, seabasses can be profitable,” says Dr. Rafael D. Guerrero III, the former executive director of the Laguna-based Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development (PCAMRD). It was only in the 1990s when seabass had a breakthrough in the market. Later on, seabass’ juicy textured flesh and attractive silver skin have appealed to the

Lakers take control early, cruise past Kings

S

ACRAMENTO — Kyle Kuzma scored 10 of his season-high 30 points in the fourth quarter and the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers thumped the Sacramento Kings, 115-94, on Friday night (Saturday, Manila time). Dennis Schroder had 17 points and eight assists as the Lakers bounced back from a 15-point loss to Milwaukee two nights earlier. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Markieff Morris had 14 points and eight rebounds. Already without LeBron James, Anthony Davis and

newly signed center Andre Drummond, the Lakers lost reserve guard Wesley Matthews to injury in the first quarter. It hardly mattered. Los Angeles led by 13 in the first and stayed comfortably in front the remainder of the game. After Kuzma made his fourth 3-pointer early in the fourth, he converted a three-point play to make it 106-82. Harrison Barnes had 26 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Kings. De'Aaron Fox, recently selected Western Conference player of the week, scored 12 points on 5-of-20 shooting.

EDGEDAVAO

VOL.14 ISSUE 17 • SUNDAY-MONDAY, APRIL 4-5, 2020

A female fitness enthusiast works out at the Arcadia Fitness Gym amid the health protocols imposed by the city government.

COVID 19 spoilsport I

hate CoVid 19. Not that I am hateful as a person but it is a spoilsport.

With the ECQ imposed anew by the President on suggestions from the Metro Manila Mayors and the IATF, the sports calendar is pushed back anew. Now, the tentative April 9 PBA opening is put on hold because the local executives in the metropolis are recommending another week of ECQ, an idea that may get the green light from Malacanang. After all, the week after Lent, on those previous normal times Filipinos have been accustomed to do before the entry of CoVid, they usually extend the Holy Week vacation as they return to the Big City. Another week of a lockdown won’t seem to hurt residents, breadwinners and families living in the NCR and the 4 big provinces around it - Rizal, Laguna, Cavite and Bulacan. However, that is not my point. If everything has been calendared for April 9 and all teams have already physically and mentally done their

strategies, the ballclubs and the players usually have to re-adjust. Baka mainip naman sila. Maybe, the PBA board of Governors thru the Commissioner’s office can pass a resolution and ask for an exemption. After all, the PBA has proven that it can police its ranks and is able to conduct its games before spectators without violating any of the IATF’s standard health protocols - mask wearing, social distance, etc. The postponement may result into another deferment into another postponement and so on because the CoVid 19 crisis is far from being under control. The GAB which regulates professional sports is not giving the PBA any clearance to play because it is obedient to (not scared of) the IATF and, from all appearances, is itself unsure of its position

because it does not want to get the blame should infections occur during the games. I think the GAB should follow the footsteps taken by the NBA and boldly take the bull by its horns. As the government regulator, the GAB should guide the oldest basketball league in Asia and allow the PBA to open its curtains to the public as long as the latter will assume responsibility for the observance of the CoVid 19 protocols and the discipline inside the arena. If a partnership such as this arises between the GAB and the PBA, then that should be a welcome development for sports fans and PBA fanatics. I believe it can be done. Then Covid 19 won’t be the spoilsport any longer. Cheers! (Email your feedback to fredlumba@yahoo. com.) GOD BLESS THE PHILIPPINES!
