avao City is now open for tourists and visitors. The re-opening was based on the number of people who went out during the long weekend after some restrictions were relaxed by the city government of Davao. City Tourism Operations Officer Generose Tecson affirmed that Davao City is now open to tourists and visitors, however, urged them to book only to the estab-

lishments accredited by the Department of Tourism (DOT). “Yes, we will allow already because intrazonal naman ang Davao but we are asking them na to

book in DOT accredited na mga establishments para matulungan natin ang mga legal na mga establishments,” Tecson said. She also said that flights coming from Dubai also arrived at Davao International Airport (DIA) last weekend. “Noong weekend marami din po tayong flights na dumating from Dubai and isa na yun na

rapidly spread to the four residential zones of Purok Saeg in Barangay Calumpang. Citing accounts from residents and barangay officials, he said it reportedly started in one of the houses in the area that are mostly made of light materials. “There were reports

that someone was cooking before it happened as it was around lunchtime then but we’re still validating that,” the mayor told reporters. He said a child was initially reported missing but was eventually found safe by one of the barangay social workers. The Bureau of Fire

Very low number of Covid-19 cases a relief to us: SPMC chief DavNor receives award for best pandemic response

T

he Provincial Government of Davao Del Norte received the award for the Best in Government Covid-19 Pandemic Response for its implementation of the Davao del Norte Covid-19 Information Management System (DCIMS). The award was given during the virtual awarding ceremony of the Digital Governance Awards 2021 on October 30, 2021, organized by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). During this year’s search for the best practices on the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to governance among local government units, the awards given were Best in Customer Empowerment, Best in LGU Government Internal Processes, Best in LGU Empowerment, Best in Business Empowerment and Best in COVID-19 Pandemic Response. The Province of Davao Del Norte grabbed the

first place for the Best in COVID-19 Pandemic Response, followed by the Province of Iloilo on the second spot, and the Province of the Southern Leyte in the third spot. Formerly named as Davao Del Norte COVID-19 Contact Tracing System (DCCTS), DCIMS regulated the movement of people inside the province and its borders. It was created to identify the people who had close contact with those who were positive of COVID-19. The said system was then revised in response to suggestion of the residents to include the Vaccination Administration System (VAS) and the Information on Tourists and Residents Against Covid-19 System (ITRACS). he current low number of Covid-19 cases in Davao City provided a much needed relief to the medical team at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) according to Dr. Ricardo Audan, officer-in-charge of SPMC “At this time nakaginhawa nami kay mubo na gyud ang datus nato,” Audan said in a phone interview. Audan said that SPMC’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is now at a 45 percent utilization rate while the ward isolation is at a 42 percent utilization rate.

Meanwhile, Audan said that they are confident to handle Covid-19 cases now that SPMC is designated again as the sole Covid-19 hospital in Davao City. SPMC has been designated as the only Davao City hospital that will cater to confirmed Covid-19 patients based on Exec-

utive Order (EO) No. 60 Series of 2021, which took effect immediately and was signed by Acting Mayor Sebastian Duterte on October 29, 2021. The EO, which is known as “An Order Designating A Single Hospital for Confirmed COVID-19 Patients in Davao City,” ordered that “The Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) shall be the only hospital in Davao City to cater to confirmed COVID-19 patients.” “We’ve learned from the past months how to handle Covid katong kami

pa. I think very confident ko we can handle it. Wala nami na surprise na gibalik sa amo as the sole Covid hospital because from the start kami man gyud ang giantasan na magcater ug mga Covid,” Audan said. On the other hand, based on the Regional Situation Update on COVID-19 in Davao Region as of November 03, 2021, the Department of Health (DOH)-Davao Center for Health Development reported 67 new cases of COVID-19 in the

pital in Davao City to cater moderate, severe, or critical cases of Covid-19. Schlosser added that asymptomatic will be admitted to the city’s Temporary Treatment and Monitoring Facilities (TTMFs). “Tungod kay naga-baba ang atong cases karon ang SPMC na lang ang mu-cater ug Covid patients para katong mga private hospitals they will

cater non-Covid cases. We will not cater home isolation anymore,” she said. In September this year, Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has allowed Covid-19 positives for home isolation to prevent hospitals to be overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has issued guidelines on the stricter

conduct of home quarantine for mild and asymptomatic Covid-19 patients, which stated that positive patients are only allowed to be isolated at home so long as the patient has his/her room and bathroom, and is not living with vulnerable household members, like senior citizens, people with underlying health conditions, and pregnant women. he Small Business Corporation (SBCorp), the financing arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), reported it approved more than PHP5.99 billion worth of loans for smallscale businesses as of end-October.

In its website, SBCorp said a total of 36,661 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) benefitted under the Covid-19 Assistance to Restart Enterprises (CARES) loan program which was funded by the Bayanihan 2.

Meanwhile, SBCorp temporarily suspended the application for Bayanihan CARES 2 program last Oct. 31 to give way to loan applications for 13th month pay loan facility. “Loan applications received after Oct. 31 shall be processed starting January 2022,” DTI’s financing arm added. Under the 13th month pay loan facility, SBCorp also provides interest-free loans to compa-

nies needing 13th month funding. Earlier, DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez said SBCorp can extend PHP50,000 to PHP200,000 worth of loans to micro and small enterprises to cover their employees’ 13th month pay. cent and the 14-day facility to 1.7696 percent. These were at 1.7521 percent for the one-week facility and 1.7723 percent for the two-week facility during the auction last October 27. The BSP hiked by PHP10 billion the offer volume for both tenors this week to PHP170 billion for the one-week and PHP330

billion for the two-week facility. Both were oversubscribed and fully awarded. Tenders for the seven-day facility amounted to PHP247.573 billion, resulting in a bid coverage ratio of 1.4563. Bids for the 14-day TDF reached PHP394.209 billion, bringing the bid coverage ratio to 1.1946. BSP Deputy Governor

Francisco Dakila Jr. has repeatedly attributed the oversubscription in most of the TDF’s weekly auctions to ample liquidity in the domestic economy. “Moving forward, the BSP’s monetary operations will remain guided by its assessment of the latest liquidity conditions and market developments,” he said. October inflation seen at 5 percent

T

he rate of price increases likely increased to 5 percent last October given the continued increase of crude oil prices in the international market. According to the October 2021 issue of the First Metro Investment Corporation (FMIC) and University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) joint publication, The Market Call, which was released on Wednesday, prices of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) averaged at USD71.65 per barrel last September while price of Brent crude registered an average of USD74.49 per barrel during the same period. It, however, said this was not reflected in the September 2021 domestic inflation rate because local oil companies adjust their prices with an average of two-week lag. “The big impact will show in October, when prices continue to spiral,” it added.

Citing government data, the report said transport prices decelerated to 5.2 percent year-on-year last September from the previous month’s 7.2 percent despite the about 80-percent expansion in crude oil prices. “However, we still see headline inflation to go below 4 percent starting December since the huge uptick in November-December 2020 wouldn’t repeat,” it added. The rate of price increases last September eased to 4.8 percent from month-ago’s 4.9 percent, which is the highest since January 2019. Average inflation to date stood at 4.5 percent, above the government’s 2 percent to 4 percent. Monetary authorities expect inflation to decline within target level by December. The Philippine Statistics Authority is scheduled to report the October 2021 inflation rate on Friday. (PNA)

nemployment in the Philippines further accelerated in September, according to the latest Labor Force Survey released Thursday by the Philippine Statistics Authority. Unemployment is at 8.9 percent in September compared to 8.1 percent in August, which is equivalent to 4.25 million jobless Filipinos, data showed. National Statistician Dennis Mapa said this is the highest unemployment rate for the year but it could be seasonal due to the drop in agriculture jobs in time for the harvest season as well as weather disturbances. Despite the rise in

unemployment for the month, employment prospects “remain promising” due to the shift in granular lockdowns, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Chua said in a statement. A “better labor outcome” can be expected in October, he said. “Overall, the economy has generated 1.1 million employment above the pre-pandemic level. This signals the Philippines’ continuing recovery. We look forward to the ex-

pansion of the alert level and granular lockdown system to the whole country to recover more jobs and livelihoods,” Chua said. Underemployment for the month totaled 6.18 million or slightly lower compared to the 6.48 million the previous month, PSA said. The overall employment rate for September reached 91.91 percent, compared to 91.9 percent in August, the agency said. HENRYLITO D. TACIO THINK ON THESE!

IS DAVAO READY FOR HUGE EARTHQUAKE? If Davao Region – composed of Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental and Davao de Oro – will experience a 7.2-magnitude earthquake, is it ready? Just like Metro Manila, Davao Region is apt for another “Big One.” The region is not spared from the destruction of a huge earthquake that may be triggered by the Surigao-Mati fault. A news report which quoted an official of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) some years back said the fault line, which stretches from Surigao City to Mati City, has a distance of 320 kilometers. “A big earthquake as strong as, if not even stronger than, the so-called ‘Big One’ that Metro Manilans are preparing for is a possibility in Davao City in the immediate future,” wrote Antonio M. Ajero, editor-in-chief of EDGE Davao, who attended a press briefing that was convened by the Philippine Information Agency. Historical records showed a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Compostela Valley in 1893. On April 15, 1924, another earthquake with 8.3-magnitude happened somewhere in Sigaboy, now known as Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental. According to the Phivolcs offi-

cial, an earthquake with an intensity of 7.2 that happened in Compostela Valley will immediately be felt in Davao City “within less than a minute” and the magnitude will be about 7. Phivolcs said that a 7.2-magnitude earthquake can shake the ground even a hundred kilometers away. Areas near the waters are more likely to experience stronger ground shaking due to the softer ground they sit on. “The shaking will just be as violent and the destruction caused by it will be just as intense as the one in Compostela,” Ajero wrote in his news report. If that is not scary, I don’t know what it is. “The only way to avoid disasters caused by earthquakes is to prepare for them,” wrote Maria Elena Paterno, in her book Earthquake! There’s good news. Phivolcs, a line agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), has inaugurated the Phivolcs Mindanao Cluster Monitoring Center for Earthquake and Tsunami (PMCMCET) facility in Davao City last September 24, 2022 via a virtual presser. According to Phivolcs, the main objective of putting a new facility is “to provide capable nationwide earthquake and tsuna-

mi monitoring that would ensure continuity of operations when the main office located in Quezon City failed to function immediately after an emergency or disruption.” The 20-million facility features near real-time display of the Philippine Seismic Network upgraded computer systems for earthquake and tsunami data acquisition and processing, and newly-installed tools for decision support, mapping, and information dissemination. Some of the equipment housed in the facility include the following: satellite dish, solar panel, broadband seismometer, strong motion sensor, data receiving center, earthquake monitoring system, Philippine seismic network, automated earthquake solution, real-time earthquake waveforms, tsunami monitoring system, and trans-Pacific sea level, tsunami monitoring websites. The newest earthquake and tsunami monitoring center is located at the Southern Mindanao Campus of the Philippine Science High School in Mintal. It is envisioned to be beneficial not only for monitoring activities but also serve as a facility for students’ education in the region. “Putting up this facility would not only benefit the residents from Davao City but also the rest of Min-

danao Island. The decisions and policies made by different LGUs could be guided by real-time data and scientific studies provided by this monitoring facility,” said Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr., Phivolcs officer-in-charge and DOST undersecretary for scientific and technical services. In her video message, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio commended DOST-Phivolcs for continuously fulfilling its mandate to mitigate the risks of natural hazards and avert disasters by providing accurate and timely information on disaster preparedness and risk reduction. “By establishing the first Mindanao earthquake and tsunami monitoring center in Davao City, you further widen the scope of the affected public service delivery especially in terms of predicting volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis as well as formulating disaster preparedness action plan to mitigate possibly the greater risks here in Mindanao,” said Duterte-Carpio. Chief Alfredo D. Baloran of the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office likewise welcomed this initiative. He said that PMCMCET would play a crucial role in helping them to have better planning, response, and policies especially after experiencing

succeeding earthquake-related events during the latter part of 2019 up to the first few months of 2020. Our country lies between two major tectonic plates: the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate. “Philippine Sea Plate is moving towards the Philippine Archipelago at the rate of about 7 centimeters every year,” Phivolcs explains. “The Eurasian Plate is being subducted along western side of Luzon and Mindoro at the rate of 3 centimeters per year except on Mindoro and northwest of Zamboanga where collision is taking place.” At the intersection of the two aforementioned plates is the Philippine Fault Zone, “which decouples the northwestward motion of the Pacific with the southwestward motion of the Eurasian Plate.” Movements along other active faults are reportedly responsible for the present-day high seismicity of the Philippine archipelago. At least 5 earthquakes per day occur in the Philippines, Phivolcs says. For almost four decades now, the country has been affected by 10 earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 7.0. As such, the possibility of these destructive earthquakes occurring again in the future “is very strong.” Now, the question is: Is the Davao Region ready?

ANTONIO V. FIGUEROA FAST BACKWARD

MORO-CHINESE LINK IN THE GULF A subject with very few indepth studies to refer to is the alliance that for centuries exists between the ethnic Chinese and the Moros of Mindanao. Off the top, the reasons foisted are related diplomatic and commercial links. Paduka Pahala, a king from eastern Sulu, died in 1417 in China while on a trade mission. His remains and descendants still live in China. Another subjective matter is the recurring visit of Chinese traders to Sulu, which eventually led to permanent settlement and intermarriage. Scholars date the political dealings and collaboration to the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368), which succeeded the Mongol Empire under the leadership of Kublai Khan, or Emperor Shizu of Yuan, which was his temple name. (Interestingly, the name originally came from the central and

eastern steppes of Mongolia and China; it was, during the medieval period, spread by dynasties throughout Asia through the Turkic peoples, referred to as ‘a collection of ethnic groups of central, east, north and west Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa, who speak Turkic languages.’) Moro-Chinese links, especially in the sultanates of Sulu and Maguindanao, are copiously detailed in Moro tarsilas and Chinese accounts. For instance, the Tans of Sulu still carry the familiar surname. In Maguindanao, the most famous Chinese scion was Datu Piang Tan, known as the grand man of Cotabato who was born to a Chinese merchant and a Maguindanaoan. Though not strongly on the political aspects, the accounts of Moro-Chinese trade alliance in the gulf of Davao found in Jesuit

records (1852-98) do not reflect strongly the more ordered links existing during the halcyon days of the two sultanates. Most of the Chinese merchants in the gulf during Spanish rule, chiefly residents in littorals, were focused more on commerce and retail trade and, as a matter of convenience, were married to native and Moro women. Chinese engagements in the gulf mainly on trade to the point the chronicles called them ‘exploiters.’ There were those, however, who were friendly to the missionaries. Fr. Domingo Bove, in a December 30, 1879, wrote about a Chinese in Cape San Agustin who gave him a paten acquired from a Manobo who owed the trader money. In one occasion, Fr. Antonio Benaiges, according to his January 28, 1894 letter, was allowed by a Chinese based in

Malalag to join him in his boat that was then bound for Davao without making a stopover at Sigaboy. Chinese generosity is also recorded in Jesuit chronicles. In his June 24, 1894 letter, Fr. Saturnino Urios, a Chinese in Samal ‘donated finished clothes and material’ for use in sewing the official attire of village leaders according to their ranks. The following year, he also reported that the Chinese residing in Santa Cruz and Arapiles, in today’s Davao del Sur, extended help to the priests, ‘proving their goodwill in their desire to be on our side.’ Some of the Chinese merchants, though, according to Fr. Mateo Gisbert’s June 21, 1885 letter, also became victims of Moro atrocities. Antoco, a Chinaman from Malita, was savagely killed by the Maguindanaoan collectors after he refused to pay the tribute

to the sultanate. While there are accounts of Chinese merchants opening business in chiefly Moro-populated villages around the gulf, only a handful converted to Islam or married a Mohammedan. It could be that the Chinese found the docile tribesmen and Christians easy to deal with. Plus, the fact that the Spaniards were more responsive to the indigenous peoples also was a consideration. Though cursorily studied, Chinese influence in commerce and trade became more robust during the American occupation, particularly with the rise of abaca plantations and the boom in hemp business. Extant accounts during period point to a flourishing, scattered Chinese merchant population generously spread throughout most of the settlements along the gulf.

IN GOLF, to sink a 1.68-inch into a 4.25inch hole ball across a grass surface is challenging. It comes at the tail end of one stretch and there are 18 holes in a full game. It’s called putting and it’s one of the most difficult parts of the game. It requires “reading” the grass surface and applying the right amount of tap on the ball.

Practice makes perfect? How about honing your putting skills in your own address? It can happen at Legacy Leisure Residences. In the vast 70% open space of the development where world-class amenities like an Olympic size pool, a spray park for kids, and other various sports and recreation facilities will be fashioned, a putting green for golf lovers will be included. The mental and physical exercises of the outdoor cluband-ball sport can be addicting. To players, the challenge to play better is ever present, but the game is also relaxing, a stress reliever. Socially, it improves both business and family relationships. The latter reason was what got Imee Garcia into the game more than 30 years ago, in the 1980s. Imee Garcia is the daughter of avid golfer-parents, Antonio M. Garcia, former director for Mindanao for the Republic of the Philippines Golf Association (now National Golf Association of the Philippine), and Baby Quindoy-Garcia. At the height of her amateur golf career, Imee had an eight handicap at the Apo Golf & Country Club, where she also became the corporate secretary and the youngest female club director. She’s the record holder of the most number of club champion trophies in RPVGA (women’s division). Imee is among the very few in Davao City who ever made a double eagle (holed in two on a par 5) and probably the only female in Davao to have achieved this feat. She also represented Mindanao in the Arafura Games in Australia in the class a division. “Life during my younger days was filled with golf. My dad and mom, both avid

players, took brood to the golf course during our younger years. It was our playground.

Then they’d take us to golf vacations and tournaments. They inspired me to get into

the sport,” shared Imee. “Practice, practice, practice. Years into the sport, I may have won titles like Club Champion and top prize in individual competitions in my class both locally and national level, hit a hole in one, made a double bogey, hit a two on a Par 5, but there is still so much to learn and master in the game of golf,” she said. How important is putting in a golf game? Imee said that it’s a never ending practice for both driving and putting, and the other strokes like pitching, chipping, blasting, etc. But if you can hit far but can’t putt well, it’s no good at all. Golfers have this saying of “you drive for show, but putt for dough.” Putting practice is the key! “To have a putting green in

a condominium development like Legacy Leisure Residences will be a big advantage for golfers like me. I can practice my putting anytime. I won’t have the time to go to the driving range nor to the golf course everyday. But if there’s a putting green in my condo, I will be very grateful. Poor putting at the course? No problem. When I get home, I can practice and correct my mistakes since there is a putting green to practice on.” On family bonding, Imee stresses that she grew up playing with her dad and mom. Golf strengthened the family. “If there is a practice green in my condo, I would love for my kids and grandkids to watch me practice. I can teach them how to play, or give a tip or two on how to play better. And hopefully, they will visit me at the condo and we will have something to do other than stay indoors.” Visit the Legacy Leisure Residences showroom along Ma-a Road and get to know what’s in store for you as a resident.

MIXED TEMPTATION: WHEN CHINESE FOODS AND DRINKS COME TOGETHER Text and photos by HENRYLITO D. TACIO

O

kay, you can now dine in restaurants. Now good news: liquor ban is now lifted. This means, you can now drink your favorite alcoholic drink in bars.

Even better is the good news: you can drink your favorite drink and delicious Chinese foods in just one place: Mixed Temptation. Yes, you can have both pleasures as it has just opened the Mixed Temptation Chinese Restaurant at the Phoenix Complex Lanang – just beside Go Hotel and fronting Guadalupe Village. The Chinese restaurant is open at 11 in the

morning up to 2:30 in the afternoon (for those who want to eat their lunch) and then open again at 5 pm until 10 pm (for dinner and some drinks). If you don’t like indoor dining, you can always request for outdoor dining. But there are other things you may like about it: romantic atmosphere, child-friendly, comfort food, fine dining, large menu, healthy options,

good salad, great dessert, classic cocktails, and large wine list. Name it, it has it! Inside, you get to notice its stylish interior and chic décor. It is as if you are inside Beijing or Shanghai. Mixed Temptation started 2012 as a mobile bar, whose main office is located at Ponciano Reyes Street fronting Kapitan Tomas Elementary School. “I personally chose drinks at that time because I myself am a bartender and I really enjoy mixing cocktails and mocktails,” revealed Rogelio “Budoy” Canales, owner and the operations head. It was a great success. But when the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic hit the country in 2020, the mobile bar was one of those affected. This

was because the government banned alcoholic beverages. He decided to shift to a restaurant and so he contacted a chef that could help him. Another reason for doing so: “I don’t want my people to

lose their job.” On why focus on Chinese foods instead of Filipino foods, he replied: “Because it is my personal favorite. I was also a former supervisor of Lotus Court Chinese Restaurant in a 5-star

hotel in the city.” Mixed Temptation offers a lot of Chinese food from its menu. However, the top five best-selling ones are the Peking duck, pata-

ang mga relatives. Yun ang mga tanong sa amin (FB page),” she said. Tecson said that opening the city for tourists will help the city government regain from the losses due to the impact of the pandemic. “We have to make bawi ang we feel the best way is through tourism,” she said. Tecson said even before lifting some restrictions, CTOO already prepared guidelines together with the private sector including hotel accommodations and tour operators for MICE (meetings incentives conference exhibitions) and social events. “We gave it to them kung ano ang dapat sundin na protocols and then kami na ang nag-a-align sa lahat para makabawi tayo and through MICE. We are happy to note that based on the Special Mayor’s Permit, marami-rami na rin ang bumabalik ang kanilang kumpyansa sa Davao City and they real-

ly want to hold their conventions in Davao City,” she said. Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has signed Executive Order (EO) No. 59, otherwise known as “An Order Providing for the Modified Guidelines on Liquor Ban and the Lifting of Curfew Within the City,” on Monday, October 25, 2021. On November 2, 2021, the city government of Davao announced that it will no longer require the mandatory use of motorcycle barriers and installation of plastic barriers on the jeepneys and other public utility vehicles to separate passengers effective immediately. Under the Executive Order No. 63 Series of 2021, an order providing for the lifting of the use of motorcycle barriers, jeepney, and other public utility vehicle barriers, these barriers will no longer be required, however, the use of these safety measures are still encouraged.

mayor said he received different reports ranging from 300 to 600. City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Dr. Agripino Dacera Jr. estimated the damaged houses at “less than 200.” Rivera said they have mobilized the city’s social workers and other responders to attend to the immediate needs of the affected residents, who were initially brought to the Barangay Calumpang gymnasium. He said they have prepared the gymnasiums in the neighboring barangays to accommodate the other fire victims. “We’re doing everything to provide the needs of the affected residents,” he said. Ryan Dupalco,

Calumpang barangay chairman, said they provided vehicles to ferry the victims to the barangay gymnasium. “We’re working double-time to validate the number of affected households and individuals,” he said. Dupalco said he will convene the barangay council in a special session to facilitate the immediate release of their calamity funds to assist the concerned residents. He said the affected area, which was estimated at over a hectare, is one of the most populated communities in their barangay. It covered portions of Zones 1, 2, 3, and 4 of Saeg and within a private property that has a pending ownership dispute. (PNA)

social media posts. Barangay Dumalaguing was where Jorge “Ka Oris” Madlos, the commander and spokesperson of the NPA’s national operations command and spokesperson of the National Democratic Front (NDF) in Mindanao, was killed in an encounter, together with his medic, Eighfel dela Peña, on October 30. Madlos and Dela Peña were earlier found to be infected with the coronavirus disease 20219 after their cadavers were

swabbed following the encounter, said Maj. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., the 4ID commander. The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines. The NDF has been formally designated as a terrorist organization by the Anti-Terrorism Council on June 23, 2021, citing it as “an integral and separate part” of the CPP-NPA created in April 1973. (PNA)

Other forthcoming actions depend on the decision of the LGU,” Brawner said. Their remains were subjected to RT-PCR tests after their bodies were found by government troops as a result of an encounter last October 30. The tests were made before extracting their remains from the encounter site as a 4ID standard operating procedure or SOP when a CTG rebel is killed or captured in an encounter or has surrendered in order to ensure that the troops will not get infected. Brawner also disclosed that the remains of Madlos and Dela Peña were cremated Tuesday night based on the decision of the IATF and in accordance with the existing Covid-19 protocols. “We are committed to respecting human rights and in adhering to International Humanitarian Law, consistent with the rule of law. Our soldiers are professionals and have sworn to serve the people and protect the land. We have delivered justice for the victims of Madlos who was responsible and accountable for all the atrocities com-

mitted during his reign as a notorious and most wanted NPA commander,” Brawner said. Meanwhile, Brawner once again extended his sincerest condolences to the families of Madlos and Dela Peña as he emphasized that the armed encounter that tragically ended their lives is unfortunate but an imperative in the Army’s mandate to serve and protect the people, particularly in responding to the appeal for help by the civilian populace when they reported the presence of armed groups in their communities. “It is in our sincerest desire that the remains will be laid to rest and the families can mourn the passing of their loved ones. After all, even as enemies of the state, they are Filipinos and deserve to have decent burials. On the other hand, I urge the remaining CTG members to finally realize the futility of their armed struggle and put down their arms. In the meantime, we will further intensify and relentlessly implement our focused military operations to go after the remnants of the group of Ka Oris,” Brawner said. (PR)

region bringing the total number of active cases to 4,583. Of these new cases, 35 were from Davao City, two from Davao de Oro, 11 from Davao del Norte, 7 from Davao del Sur, one from Davao Occidental and 11 from Davao Oriental. There are 1,049 recoveries reported and among these, 97 were from

Davao City, 28 from Davao de Oro, 26 from Davao del Norte, 106 from Davao del Sur, 789 from Davao Occidental, and three from Davao Oriental. tim, Hainanese chicken, dimsum, and homemade tofu. For those who want to dine in at the Ponciano branch, don’t worry about the parking area. The restaurant has a parking area for those with vehicles. You can also order your favorite foods while waiting inside the air-conditioned restaurant. Or, you may opt to pick-up your order later on. Even with the pandemic going on, Mixed Temptation became popular. People order from them and they deliver their orders – just like Food Panda. Early this year, Budoy decided to open a new branch somewhere in Lanang which will be accessible to those living in the northern part of the city. “In addition, most of the regular guests that we have are from the north,” he said. With two restaurants, which is better: “The strength of our main branch in Ponciano Reyes Street is the take-out orders; in fact, 80% of the sales comes from take-out. In the Lanang branch, 90% of our guests can dine in as it has a bigger place.” There were some les-

sons he learned from the current pandemic. “My mobile bar and bar business was closed temporarily by the pandemic, but we also discovered Chinese food also through the pandemic,” Budoy said. Since drinks are now allowed, he is planning again to bring the drinks to people? “We will still continue to operate as a mobile bar or beverage catering. But there’s a twist: we will be offering a mobile bar that comes with food. Our new tagline right now is”: ‘Tell me where the party is, and we’ll bring the bar and the Chinese Food.” You can never put Rogelio “Budoy” Canales down. He is a man with sheer determination and is full of ideas. He is a perseverance incarnate. “In this pandemic, I learned that you should never quit. Never lose hope to the things that you really love to do. If it doesn’t work, then change the system,” he pointed out. As if echoing the words of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Budoy said: “Don’t lose hope. Never quit, choose a business that you love the most.”

PSC Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez explains that “learning never stops. For some of our athletes, studies gave way to their training, but learning should never stop. We must find a way.” MAKE It Sports will feature modules that participants can learn at their own pace and time. They can opt to apply for certification by getting the exam. The courses will be given exclusively to registered learners for the first three months, after which the courses will be uploaded to the PSC’s website for public access. Ramirez cites the topics as practical and can be applied to daily life as it intersects with their sports life. “They can be an athlete, a teacher, a coach, an administrator

but knowledge on the law as it applies to sports is very useful,” explained Ramirez, a coach, and teacher before he became the PSC’s man-at- thehelm. The first module to be released will deal with Sports Law, to be discussed by sports law-forall advocate and Pilipinas Obstacle Sports Federation President, Atty. Alberto Agra. Two other modules which will be available this month are courses on Arbitration in Sports and Netball. MAKE it Sports is an off shoot of the National Sports Summit 2021, the participants of which requested the continuation of similar learning activities. The NSS gathered more than 13,000 participants in the course of its first phase’s conduct.

al posted system-wide sales of about $66.5 million in 2019 and $74.7 million in 2020, JFC said. “This gives JFC the opportunity to participate in this fast-growing beverage category and together with Milkshop’s Founder, grow the Milksha brand globally,” the company said. Currently, JFC’s sub-

sidiaries Fresh N’ Famous and Mang Inasal have “exclusive rights” to sell and market Milksha products in their stores. It will soon be sold in Chowking stores as well, JFC said. The Jollibee Group aims to become among the world’s top 5 restaurant operators. It currently has a network of 5,853 stores and 17 brands operating in 34 countries.

ooks like the Philippine sports will lose one of its most prized treasures. Yuka Saso has decided to become a Japanese citizen when she turns 22, according to Japanese media outlets. The 20-year-old Saso

was born in San Ildefonso, Bulacan to a Japanese father and a Filipino mother, and has represented the Philippines since her jungolf days. But this year’s US Open winner, under Japan’s Nationality Law, must choose one citizen-

ship before turning 22, or two years after acquiring the second nationality. The National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) said it has yet to get an official communication on the matter from the Japan federation or from Saso herself.

inoy cager Kai Sotto will get his first taste of Australian basketball when the Adelaide 36ers compete in the National Basketball League (NBL) Blitz preseason games this month. The Filipino prodigy will have his first look against former NBA center Nathan Jawai and Kiwi forward Jordan Ngatai when Adelaide plays the Cairns Taipans at MyState Bank Arena on Nov. 14.

He will then brace for South Sudanese big man Majok Majok when the 36ers face off against the Perth Wildcats on Nov. 16, still at MyState Bank Arena. Adelaide then gets a preview of its season opener when it takes on the newcomers Tasmania JackJumpers on Nov. 21 at Ulverstone Sport and Leisure Center. A rematch against

Perth is also set on Nov. 26 at Elphin Sports Center, though the game won’t be counted in the Blitz standings. Closing out the 36ers schedule will be the Brisbane Bullets, where Sotto gets re-acquainted with Chinese behemoth Liu Chuanxing as they play at MyState Bank Arena on Nov. 28. Hopes are high for Sotto for his rookie season Down Under as he gets a chance to prove his mettle in the NBL. Adelaide opens its season on the road on Dec. 3 against Tasmania.

The 36-year-old made 18 assists during the game with New Orleans Pelicans at the Footprint Center, Phoenix, reaching 10,346 assists. The Suns beat Pelicans 112-100. Besides being the player with the most assists among active NBA players, he is also the only player in history to reach 20,000 career points and 10,000 assists. The
