He also explained that the power rate in its franchise areas is not dictated by Nordeco. He said Nordeco’s rate has been the same since 2012, but he reminded that there are factors that affect the increase in power rates which are beyond the control of Nordeco, including the increase in the prices of gasoline and crude oil.

“In which under sa balaod allowed ni pass on sa member/ consumers,” he said.

Jubahib claimed that households in the province also suffer from the consequences of the poor services of Nordeco.

“With the increasing power rates, many families struggle to pay their bills and make difficult decisions on allocating their limited resources,” he said.

Jubahib believes that the availability of a dependable and cheap power services is essential to ensuring the comfort and safety of tourists since tourism contributes significantly to the province’s economy.

With the high power rates imposed by Nordeco, the governor said tourism-related businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and resorts in Tagum City and IGaCoS are facing increasing operational costs, which can result in higher prices for tourists.

He said this is also among the reasons why he stands in solidarity with the Tagum Chamber of Commerce and the Davao Consumer Movement in their protest against the high power rates and poor services of the current provider.

“I share their concern and understand the impact that this issue has on the lives of our constituents. As the Governor of Davao del Norte, I fully support the Tagum Chamber of Commerce and Davao Consumer Movement in their call for fair and reasonable power rates and high-quality services for all,” he said.

He also expressed support to the bills that aim to expand the franchise of Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC), Inc.

Jubahib is referring to House Bill (HB) 5077, which was filed by Davao del Norte 1st District 1 Representative Pantaleon D. Alvarez, the HB 6740 by Rep. Margarita Ignacia B. Nograles of PBA Partylist, and the HB 7047 by Rep. Sandro L. Gonzales of MARINO Partylist that were filed in Congress to expand the franchise of the Aboitiz-owned DLPC.
