Mother of massacre victim harassed anew

He mother of one of the journalist victims in the ampatuan massacre has reported that suspicious persons have been asking her neighbors of her whereabouts. The chilling part of the inquiries, her neighbors told her, is that the suspects were showing them her picture. In an interview Tuesday, Catherine Nuñez, mother of uNTV cameraman Victor, said that around 9 a.m. Thursday last week, four men riding in tandem aboard two motorcycles asked her neighbor (name withheld for security reasons) they were looking for someone in the area. “They then showed (my neighbor) a picture of me and asked if he knew me and where I lived. my
neighbor said the men were speaking in the dialect but had a peculiar accent,” said Nuñez, who was still visibly shaken. Fortunately, her neighbor is aware of the ongoing ampatuan massacre case and denied knowing her. Nuñez’s neighbor told her the four men left their neighborhood with a white Isuzu D-max pickup, with no license plate, trailing behind the two motorcycles. “Before, when suspicious persons asked my neighbors if they knew a certain Cathy, I still managed to laugh it off. But now, they have a picture of me. I fear for my life,” she added. Nuñez, who is among the most outspoken of the victims’ families pressing for justice for the victims

More groups call for disqualification of Palace-backed party-lists in polls m Y
OuTH group anakbayan welcomed the statement of the Parish Pastoral Council for responsible Voting (PPCrV) calling for the disqualification of Palace-backed party-lists in the 2013 polls. In an interview with radio Veritas, PPCrV Chairperson Henrietta de Villa said the likes of akbayan and the Black and white movement are not so-called marginalized groups that have the right to join the elections. “Hindi naman sila marginalized. Kahit hindi naman marunong mag-isip, kaagad-agad ay makikita yun,” she said. archbishop Oscar Cruz in his blog also assailed palace-backed partylists for being “epal, bopal and kapal.” uP student regent Cleve arguelles also said it was his duty as student regent to support the disqualification of akbayan because akbayan supported aquino’s budget
cuts on uP and state universities. “akbayan cannot get away with red-tagging, illogical retorts and cheap antics. They should stop claiming they are oppressed, marginalized and underrepresented,” said Vencer Crisostomo, national chair of anakbayan. Various groups previously filed a letter to Comelec calling for the disqualification of akbayan party-list saying the group is “well-entrenched” in government and that its nominees
hold appointive positions. among akbayan members in government are: ronald Llamas, former akBaYaN president, now presidential political affairs adviser; etta rosales, former akBaYaN president and representative, is now Commission on Human rights chief; Joel rocamora, former akBaYaN president and ideologue, now head of National anti-Poverty Commission; Percival Cendena, former akBaYaN chairperson, is National Youth Commission commissioner-at-large; and mario aguho, Government service Insurance system board member.

emBers of the moro communities from Davao City and in the greater Davao area, as well as members of civil society organizations and the military, expressed their support for the peace process between the government and the moro Islamic Liberation Front by joining a symbolic signing of the Framework agreement on the Bangsamoro coinciding with the monday afternoon signing in malacañang. about 500 people gathered at the Freedom Park here as they affixed their signatures on a giant copy of the Framework agreement printed on tarpaulin. moro women wore black abaya and green hijab to represent their struggle and aspiration for peace in mindanao. Lyndee Prieto, of the mindanao Peaceweavers secretariat, said although it is understandable that the signing of Framework
agreement was held in the malacanan Palace, the groups sought for a version of the signing here, thus they initiated the activity dubbed “Davao duyog sakalinaw.” she said the ceremonial signing that ended with a festive mood was also participated in by the academe, such as the ateneo de Davao university, non-government organizations, the eastern mindanao Commandand Task Force Davao. The agreement, she said, is a milestone and “needs to be supported through and through although according to some government officials, it has imperfections.” “we also need to welcome the new political entity,” she told mindaNews, adding that the entire nation has to be involved in the process as most people outside the zone of conflict seem to notice mindanao only when there are bombings and armed encounters. Senate accepts Recto’s resignation; designates Drilon as acting chairman
He Department of science and Technology (DOsT) is pushing for the development of a strategic plan that would help transform mindanao into a prime science and technology hub in the country and in southeast asia. Prof. Fortunato dela Peña, DOsT undersecretary for science and technology services, said they are currently working with various sectors in the island for the creation of the strategic plan that would fully develop mindanao’s science and technology sector as well as its vast resources. “we’re mainly looking at helping mindanao
realize its full potentials through science and technology,” he said. Dela Peña said the proposed plan will initially concentrate on the upgrading and enhancement of existing research institutions, facilities and projects in the island. He said it would work for the strengthening of research and development activities and programs of colleges and universities through partnerships and collaborations with the agency and research institutions abroad. Dela Peña, who graced the mindanao cluster celebration of the National science and Technology week, said the plan will in-
clude strategies that would help establish product niches for mindanao based on its available resources and technology strengths. “It will also set the required investments from the government and the private sector in terms of engineering and science and technology facilities, projects and scholarships,” he said. Dela Peña said the strategic plan would set mechanisms that would help determine whether the adopted strategies are doable or not. The official said among the technology-based sectors and industries in the island that would benefit from the plan are rubber
processing, Halal and agricultural biotechnology. rubber production and processing is mainly concentrated in North Cotabato province but plantation expansions are ongoing in south Cotabato and sultan kudarat provinces. DOsT opened last year a satellite Halal laboratory in Cotabato City but the agency is presently constructing a full laboratory and testing facility in koronadal City. General santos City, south Cotabato and Bukidnon provinces host field testing sites and research facilities for genetically-engineered Bacillus Thuringiensis or Bt corn of international seed companies. ITH about 30,000 people served, the Convergence for Peace and Development of the provincial government of Davao del Norte and of the 1003rd Brigade of the Philippine army has shown outcomes in one year implementation. aside from counting the number of beneficiaries that reached a total of 29,617 and summing up the cost of delivered benefits that totaled P7.9 million as of september this year, the provincial government of Davao del Norte took note of the results of hauling a caravan of services at the barangay level through the Convergence for Peace and Development locally known as “The Convergence”. The Convergence blends efforts of the 10th Infantry Division of the Philippine army through the 1003rd “raptor” Brigade and the Provincial Government of Davao del Norte to focus on directly serving the people especially the poor and the underprivileged. Provincial Governor rodolfo P. del rosario carries a development agenda anchored on PeOPLe which basically anchors on human development and people empowerment. meanwhile, the 10th
Infantry “agila” Division wages its Peace and Development Outreach Program (PDOP) by providing technical and social services to barangays through its Peace and Development Teams (PDT) of military personnel. The two Convergence partners started in august last year the hauling of various services from key provincial government offices and various military units of the 1003rd IB with the participation of the Provincial Police Office. They initially took the Convergence to eight barangays of Gupitan in kapalong; New Cortez and Patrocenio in New Corella; Binancian in asuncion; sitio Cabidianan, Barangay sto. Nino in Talaingod; sitio Igang, Barangay Palma Gil also in Talaingod; Datu Balong and mamangan in san Isidro. This year, they’re now more than halfway in reaching out to 30 target barangays identified to benefit from the Convergence which brings along a menu of services specifically tooth extraction, family health care, environmental health and sanitation, medical laboratory exams; nutrition feeding ; haircut; legal consultation, notary services; and massage therapy. Gov. Mendoza asks armed civilians to register firearms N
OrTH Cotabato Gov. emmylou “Lala”J. Taliño-mendoza is asking armed civilians to register their firearms, saying that there may be no longer be reason to invest in firearms following the signing of the Framework agreement between the
Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the moro Islamic Liberation Front (mILF). The GPH and the mILF have committed to work in partnership for the reduction and control of firearms and the disbandment of private armies and other armed groups in the Bangsamoro area, as stated in the Framework agreement of the Bangsamoro signed monday. “In mindanao, the first investment of a person is firearms because of the situation. That’s why there was an amnesty conducted two or three years ago to register guns. Hindi naman binabawal na may baril, pero gawin mong legal (It’s not that possession of firearms is being prohibited;
just make it legal),” the governor told mindaNews in an interview saturday. she said by registering firearms, the bearer will be more responsible and the government, particularly the police and the military, will be accountable as to who should be allowed to possess firearms in the locality. similarly, mayor Loreto Cabaya of aleosan, North Cotabato told mindaNews during an interview in his town last Friday that with the Framework agreement, there may be no need for people in mindanao to bring firearms. along with his people, he hopes that both GPH and mILF will follow all the provisions in the Framework agreement because, he said, “If we
can see that the government is sincere to ensure the safety of everyone, maybe there is no need to have weapons.” Cabaya said the local government is looking at disarming the Civilian Volunteers Organization (CVO) and paramilitary units, considering that many people in aleosan, especially in Bagolibas Village, have firearms to protect themselves. In the same manner, he added, almost everyone in moro communities have guns because it is part of their culture to protect themselves. Cabaya pointed out that after resolving the conflict between the GPH and mILF, there are still other things to consider, such as threats from
final screening. He said the three-minute film was directed by Charles andrew Flamiano, a fourth year high school student of NDDu-IBeD, and was assisted by classmate alyanna Pauline Tambuli, who developed the script. Fellow students Georgianne eve soledad did the editing while eda Carillo handled the cinematography along with Flamiano and Tambuli, he said. Pasuelo said Flamiano and his group were recipients of the training programs on filmmaking earlier launched by the city government as part of its enhanced sHeeP- Computer Literacy Program (CLP).
“Now they’re considered as among the best amateur filmmakers in the world,” he said. sHeeP stands for social Transformation, Human empowerment, economic Diversification, environment security and regeneration and Participatory Governance and Transparency, which are the city’s main development thrusts. The city government earlier launched the CLP as a major component of the sHeeP program’s education-related initiatives. Pasuelo said the short film, which was entered in the 14-to-17 age category, was based on the competition’s theme: “How my Faith Inspires me.” [ALLEN V.

Zoo penguins die T in malaria outbreak s
Ix penguins have died following an outbreak of malaria at London Zoo. The birds contracted the avian strain of the disease from mosquitoes and died in august. Zookeepers had increased the birds’ anti-malaria medication due to fears that the wet weather would let the insects thrive. avian malaria cannot be passed on to humans, nor can it be passed from bird to bird, and the zoo says the remaining penguins are “healthy and well”. ‘sad occasion’ a spokeswoman for London Zoo said avian malaria is “endemic” in the uk’s wild bird population. Preventative measures, including anti-malaria medicine were in place on a daily basis to prevent this “very sad occasion” from happening again, she added. avian malaria in penguins is not uncommon and outbreaks have been recorded as far back as the 1920s, according to Dr stephen Larcombe, who studies the disease at Oxford university’s edward Grey Institute. He said: “Generally
where they live is cold and windy so they don’t get infected very often in their native conditions. “In zoos it is quite likely that mosquitoes will be around, especially when, like this year,
conditions are wet and there’s lots of things for them to bite. “Because penguins will have almost no resistance, when one bird does become infected it will probably have a lot
More uplanders to get entrepreneurial training

He Forest management Bureau and its partners will train more people’s organizations on preparing respective sustainable business and development plans so these groups can become environment and natural resources community-based enterprises that can help reduce poverty in the uplands. “we want to elevate POs from being merely engaged in subsistence livelihood,” said senior agriculturist elvira agpoon from FmB’s Community-Based Forest management unit that’s involved in the undertaking. she noted the country has 1,790 POs nationwide at present and training these to become enterprises will contribute much towards improving rural socio-economic conditions. For next month, she said FmB is scheduled to hold one such training in
Davao City for mindanao-based POs the agency will select. FmB will also conduct in January 2013 the same training for selected POs in the Visayas, she noted. she said FmB conducted the first training in Luzon this year. agpoon said private group Non-Timber Forest Products will train the participants using its own modules. she said the NTFP modules were harmonized with the eNrcommunity-based enterprise development and management guide published by FmB, New Zealand aid Programme as well as Food and agriculture Organization. “we want to help POs develop capability to identify entrepreneurial activities appropriate to their respective settings and which these groups can venture into,” she said. The PO readiness assessment tool can help
such groups do so, she noted. For the guide’s inputs, agpoon said authorities concerned used experiences of and lessons learned by POs in eight sites where FmB and its partners piloted the enterprise development training. The pilot sites and corresponding POs there are Bgy. Laguit Padilla, Bugallon, Pangasinan province (Laguit Padilla multi-Purpose Cooperative), Bgy. amulong, Baggao, Cagayan province (Cagayan Valley resources Developers and Protectors Incorporated); Bgy. alangan, Limay, Bataan province (alangan Farmers Producers association Incorporated), Bgy. san Isidro, roxas, Palawan province (san Isidro IsF Farmers association), maasin, Iloilo province (katilingban san Pamuluyo nga Naga-atipan sang watershed PO Federation); [PNA]

He Department of environment and Natural resourcesCaraGa is working on short and long term solutions to illegal logging in the country’s timber corridor. DeNr assistant secretary marlo D. mendoza, who is currently the regional executive Director of DeNr-Caraga region, said the top management of DeNr 13 is studying a new strategy new strategy that would hopefully put an end to illegal logging activities and poverty in the upland areas of the region. He made the announcement during the 111th Police servicing anniversary Celebration last monday in Butuan City. mendoza said one strategy is the establishment of forest cluster enterprise in several areas where all confiscated forest products are deposited and processed into lumber. supervised by DeNr officers, the forest cluster area serves as the focal point where confiscated logs are brought in and processed into lumber for the Technical education and skills Development authority (TesDa)-Department of education (Deped)school chairs program. mendoza noted that there have been several attempts to solve the illegal logging problem in the area but to no avail. Initially, mendoza claimed he made talks
with Governors Johnny Pimentel of surigao del sur , adolf edward Plaza of agusan del sur , sol F. matugas of surigao del Norte mayor Ferdinand amante of Butuan City and mayor Librado Cubil Navarro of Bislig City over the past two months since he assumed his new post in July 2012, to get their comments about the short and medium to long term solutions to illegal logging in the region. He said these local officials has offered their full support and cooperation in terms of logistics, manpower and equipment to accomplish the job. “Our objective is to help those families who were dislocated by the relentless campaign of the DeNr and the anti-Illegal Logging Task Force enforcing executive Order 23 signed by President Benigno C. aquino on February 2,2011”, mendoza added. mendoza further said DeNr has made special arrangements with the Department of social welfare and Development (DswD) and the local government officials that will provide financial aid through the Cash Conditional Transfer Fund to qualified affected families while they are await harvest of their crops and planted species such as falcatta, bagras, and acacia mangium. also under such arrangements, DeNr encouraged these families to plant trees and cash crops to augment their income. FILPOrT is actually the Davao City local government’s official partner in the operation of both sta. ana pier and sasa wharf. The sasa wharf, in particular, is considered to be the biggest in mindanao in terms of the volume of cargo handled. The award was received by FILPOrT officials led by its president, Henry Lopez-Chua, during cocktails ceremony at the waterfront Insular Hotel Davao last night. according to Lopez-Chua, the IsO award is symbolic of the company’s long-time devotion to quality management as well as a dedication to professional and systematic approach to its operations. Lopez-Chua pointed out that the international recognition likewise means that FILPOrT’s management system meets the requirements of the IsO 9001:2008 standard. “This will assure our clienteles of achieving the best service possible in their cargo handling requirements. It also strengthens the commitment of FILPOrT to the
local government since Davao City is also considered as a gateway to other countries not only in the aseaN region but as well as in europe and in the united states,” Lopez-Chua said. aside from Lopez-Chua, FILPOrT’s operation is also managed by a team of veteran industry leaders Victoriano Go, chairman; elierzer de Jesus treasurer and agustin soriano, general manager. Organized in 1976, FILPOrT officially started its operation on February 16, 1977 as the sole and exclusive cargo handling operator tasked to provide services to all domestic sea vessels calling at the government port of sasa wharf and the sta. ana pier. The designation of FILPOrT at the sasa wharf and sta. ana Pier in February 1977 was in response to the Philippine Ports authority administrative Order No. 13-77 mandating that only one cargo handling contractor will operate in every port. Prior to this date, stevedoring and arrastre services for coastwise or domestic cargoes loaded on and/or in inter-island vessels calling at these ports were being handled by several multiple cargo handling operators in Davao City.

DOST affirms depleting fish catch in Davao Gulf a
N officer of the Department of science and Technology (DOsT-11) confirmed the research findings regarding the general depletion of fishery resources in a study conducted in ten locations surrounding Davao Gulf from 2000 to 2010. DOsT 11 regional director Dr. anthony sales said the depleting fish catch can be attributed to factors like water pollution, destroyed fishing habitat, diminishing sea grass, conversion of mangrove planting areas to recreational resorts and poor fishing practices. The declining fish catch impacts on the poor fisherfolks, consequently making them insecure of fishing as their primary and only source of livelihood, sales stated at the opening program of the 49th Fish Conservation week Celebration held monday at the Grand regal Hotel. He said the situation makes
them consider other alternative sources of income and better livelihood activities. “many respondents express willingness to explore other sources of livelihood aside from fishing as the catch gets smaller,” he added. sales recommended strict implementation of waste management laws to minimize water pollution. He said it is necessary for local government units to look at the discharges from the resorts and to ensure that no establishment stands within the 30-meter radius from the shoreline. “Human activities on the coastal area contribute to the quality of our marine resources,” sales stated. He said that DOsT can also provide alternative source of livelihood to affected fishing communities through the agency’s small enterprise upgrading Program where aqua-culture
and fisheries are considered priority projects. sales said their agency can provide financial and technical assistance to fisherfolks in the region to lessen the depletion of the fishery resources. “we prefer that the proponent is an organization or cooperative, though we also provide to individual enterprises, as long as they have legal personality. at the region, we can give as much as P1-million and up to P2-million at the central office,” he said. The study was a collaborative effort of the Bureau of Fisheries and aquatic resources, local government units and the DOsT 11. It covered research sites such as Barangay Cagangohan of Panabo City and Barangay aDeCOr of the Island Garden City of samal, both of Davao del Norte; and Barangay Tuban of sta. The study was dubbed as “strengthening Governance and sustainability of small-scale Fisheries management in the Philippines: an ecosystem-based Fisheries management approach in Davao region.” a total of 265 fishers were surveyed in all of the barangay sites, most of them male with ages 40 years old and above who spent 11-20 years as fishers. The fishers usually make a weekly income of ₱1,067 in fishing and ₱1,845 in other non-fishing livelihoods. earlier, Dr. Della Grace Bacaltos bared that the danggit catch in sta. of the city’s oldest and biggest villages, was initially declared by the barangay council last month as child labor-free through resolution No. 67 that was later affirmed by the city council. The measure provided for the strengthening of the village’s partnership with DOLe region 12 and other concerned agencies as well as support for the imple-
mentation of republic act 9231 or the anti-Child Labor Law. In a program held at the Barangay Bula gymnasium, Baldoz led the distribution of the school and other educational supplies to the 69 documented child workers of the village. she also released various livelihood assistance packages in the form of kabuhayan start-
er kits to 21 parents of the child workers. The Bula barangay council earlier passed resolution No. 64 authorizing its chair, eduardo Vargas, to enter into a memorandum of agreement with DOLe-12 for the implementation of the kabuhayan starter kit project in the area. DOLE declares GenSan village as child labor-free He Department of Labor and employment (DOLe) has declared an urban barangay in General santos City as child labor-free as it intensified its efforts to eliminate the incidence of child labor in this city and several other areas in region 12 or the soccsksargen region. Labor secretary rosalinda Baldoz declared Barangay Bula on monday as child labor-free following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (mOu) between the agency and local stakeholders for the promotion of child labor prevention and elimination initiatives in the area. “This part of our ongoing intensified efforts to liberate all the country’s barangays with high incidence of child labor and make them child labor-free,” Baldoz said. The mOu calls for the stricter enforcement of child labor laws, strengthening of advocacy campaigns against child labor and exploitation as well as the provision of alternative employment for the families of the area’s child workers. It was signed by officials of Barangay Bula, the city government, Department of education and the marcellin Foundation. Barangay Bula, which is one

raids Google for Samsung unveils compact Yahoo! another key executive Galaxy S III smartphone Y
s
amsuNG electronics on Friday unveiled a compact version of its flagship Galaxy s III smartphone, with a touch screen sized to match that of arch-rival apple’s new iPhone 5. The Galaxy s III mini has a four inch high-definition touch screen, compared to the 4.8 inch version on it’s larger samsung sibling, but the size reduction is offered at a technical price. The display has a lower resolution of 800x480 pixels compared to 1,280x720 pixels, the camera is five rather than eight megapixels and the s III’s dual-core 1.5GHz processor has been downgraded to 1GHz. “It can be an optimal choice for consumers who are looking for more practical smartphones,” samsung said in statement. The company gave no details on pricing or an eventual sales date.
The mini’s screen is the same size as the iPhone 5 launched last month by apple, but its reduced fea-
ture set makes it more of a corner man in the heavyweight clash between the iPhone 5 and the s III. samsung and apple are currently embroiled in a bitter legal battle spread over 10 countries over alleged patent infringements. Initial reactions to the new samsung product were underwhelming. “The only iPhone it may be capable of beating is the 3Gs from 2009,” said a review in the Los angeles Times, which said the mini’s inability to connect with 4G net-
works w a s “unacceptable for any phone trying to be a major player”. wired magazine bemoaned the lower resolution on the touch screen and said the final product was a “big compromise in a small package”. But some industry analysts said comparisons with the features boasted by top-end smartphones were missing the point. “This is a lower-end product and it is not really a competitor for iPhone 5,” said James song, a tech analyst at Daewoo securities. The mini does boast many of the same software features as the s III. It is powered by the latest android 4.1 Jelly
Bean operating system, packed with s Voice, a language recognition software, and smart stay which keeps the screen lit as long as you are looking at it. Other features include direct call, which enables you to automatically dial a call simply by lifting the phone to your ear when reading a text message from your friend. s Beam allows the user to share music files between Galaxy s III series and Galaxy Note II devices simply by tapping the phones together. shin Jong-kyun, who leads samsung’s IT and mobile Communications Division, told reporters earlier this week that the mini was aimed at meeting strong demand in europe for smartphones with four inch screens. “some people call the new model a lower-end version of the Galaxy s III but we prefer the mini tag,” shin said.
LG blends smartphones and style with the Optimus L-Style series
I
N today’s world, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish one smartphone from another simply by looks. However, for LG—makers of mobile gems such as the Prada Phone 3.0 and the critically-acclaimed Chocolate—looks are as important as functionality during the product development phase. LG aims to stand out from the sea of touchscreen android handsets by incorporating a unique design philosophy called “L-style.” Currently encompassing three smartphone models, the L-style series incorporates five design elements to create the uniquely fashionable appearance: modern square style to provide both a sturdy and angular, yet sophisticated posture; Harmonized Design Contrast combining a soft casing and metallic accents; Floating mass Technology to make the slim frame look even slimmer; seamless Layout to create a neatly minimalist profile; and sensuous slim shape for a sleek look that just grabs attention. a good smartphone is more than just looks however, which is why
LG has incorporated key features that truly make the L-style series an excellent choice for the discerning and the demanding. each model in the L-style series features the biggest display in their respective categories—3.2” for the Optimus L3, 4” for the Optimus L5, and 4.2” for the OptimusL7—which makes for pleasurable viewing of text, videos, and images. moreover, the Optimus L7 takes it one step further with the use of IPs display technology—the same used in the smartphone heavyweight Optimus
4x HD—that features even crisper, more vibrant displays and more natural colors. all models in the L-style series have a unique handy feature called Quickmemo, which allows users to instantly write down anything on their screens without having to leave the current screen or opening a separate application. For smartphones that ooze with style and substance, the L-style series models are quite generously priced. The Optimus L3, the entry-level representative of L-style, comes at only
Php 5,390 srP. The midrange model, the Optimus L5, is priced at Php 10,990 srP. The full-featured Optimus L7 is only Php 15,990. and if that wasn’t generous enough, LG Philippines is providing limited-edition accessories for a period of time with every purchase of an L-style series smartphone. all models will come with an exclusive original jelly cover, and the L5 and L7 will come with capacitive stylus pens—a perfect companion for Quickmemo—from august 1 to september 30, 2012. To formally welcome the L-style family into the Philippines, LG Philippines will launch a 360-degree campaign that covers print, television, out-of-home, and digital media, as well as the aforementioned jelly cover/stylus promo. In addition, LG will also be setting up L-style Zones in LG concept stores nationwide, where people can walk in and experience L-style for themselves. On Facebook, LG Philippines is currently promoting the Optimus L7 as part of the Quickmemo event. This can be found at the official LG mobile Philippines fanpage.
aHOO! announced it had nabbed another key Google executive, naming Henrique de Castro as chief operating officer. De Castro will report directly to chief executive marissa mayer, who came from Google in July to help turn around the struggling Internet pioneer. “Henrique is an incredibly accomplished and rigorous business leader, and I’m personally excited to have him join Yahoo!’s strong leadership team,” said mayer. “His operational experience in Internet advertising and his proven success in structuring and scaling global organizations make him the perfect fit for Yahoo! as we propel the business to its next phase of growth.” mayer tweeted that monday’s announcement came on her “first full day back in the office” following just two weeks of maternity leave. De Castro said in a statement that Yahoo! has a potential to use its “outstanding user experience and its massive reach to bring tremendous value to users, advertisers and partners.” “This is a pivotal point in Yahoo!’s history, and I
believe strongly in the opportunity ahead,” he said. “I can’t wait to join marissa and the team and get started.” De Castro was vice president of Google’s worldwide Partner Business solutions group, where he was responsible for advertising platforms and services for Google’s publisher and commerce partners. Prior to that, he led Google’s media, mobile and platforms organization. He has also worked at Dell and the consulting firm mckinsey. De Castro will join the company by January 22, “or as soon as he has satisfied his obligations to his current employer,” Yahoo! said. according to a regulatory filing, de Castro will receive an annual base salary of $600,000 and a one-time retention equity award. some $18 million will be in the form of restricted stock units and another $18 million in performance-based stock options. He will get a $1 million bonus for leaving Google. Yahoo! has been trying to reinvent itself since the once-flowering Internet search service found itself withering in Google’s shadow.

PreaDING bomb threats such as what is happening in Davao City for days now is a terrorist act. such act, even if intended only as a malicious prank, could have the same damaging effect on the psychology of citizens, especially among many Dabawenyos who had experienced real bombing incidents in the now distant past. Targets of the bomb threats are public schools, whose teachers and students
must have trembled in fear. we hope that the local police under sr. supt ronald dela rosa, with the assistance of the ubiquitous Task Force Davao, would be equal to the difficult task of finding out who are the pranksters behind these threats. It is also hoped that the pranksters realize the gravity of what they are doing before good sleuthing lawmen caught them.

T the time when original inhabitants of Luzon and the Visayas has relatively limited community activities, the muslims of the south were already booming trading partners of neighboring mighty empires. Tawi-Tawi, for example, came from the malay word “jauh”, meaning “far”, used by the continental asian traders to describe the place. Lakan Ipentun, once chieftain of kumalarang in Basilan, was first recorded to visit Chinese emperor Yung Lo and was proclaimed as a vassal king (“wang”) of the Chinese empire. The sultanate of sulu once covered sabah, over which the Philippines has a dormant territorial claim. The malaysian government, through its manila embassy, still pays a measly rental to the heirs of the dead sultan. Independent kingdom of Butuan and few sultanates in mindanao traded with the great empires of madjapahit and sri Vijaya. The muslims in mindanao successfully retained their independence from foreign domination. It was only during the american colonial regime that many of them were finally subjugated. soon, the american masters were replaced by their “little brown brothers” from Luzon. It was a proud history. The Filipino nation emerged only when neighboring villages ruled by datus and rajahs united to confront a single enemy. Only then did a common consciousness emerged, hence the birth of a single nation. Technically, Lapu-Lapu was not a Filipino. He was a mere datu somewhere in the Visayas, with no notion of Filipino nationhood. Our country is even named after a Catholic king of spain. when Filipino revolutionaries in Luzon and the Visayas waged war against the conquistadores, mindanaoans remained largely untouched. The muslim struggle for nationhood began not in the late nineteenth century but centuries before that. The earliest recorded fight was the Battle of Tampakan. Captain esteban rodriguez de Figueroa was slain by rajah silongan of Bwayan, now called Gen. santos City. Tampakan sits on a multi-billion dollar copper and gold reserves and is now embroiled in another battle, environmental struggle this time. Then senator richard Gordon proposed another ray on the sun to represent Zambales, in addition to the first eight Luzon provinces to rise against spain. Gordon, by the way, is from Zambales. For others, the Gordon proposal was designed to appease the muslims. well, the ninth ray is an inappropriate representation. The crescent moon is. symbols are essential ingredients of a culture, the soul and identity of a people. They empower imageries and encapsulate cherished ideals of a people. Charles Pierce, originator of the symiotic theory of symbols, considers signs as representations of something else. Language, he argues, is the perfect symiotic system. Given the same cultural or linguistic background, a symbol conveys a uniform meaning to a group of people. when aguinaldo ordered for a flag to be made and presented during the declaration in kawit, the design used was largely an idea of Luzon-based revolutionaries. The Visayans had their own flags. Zamboanga was also a different republic then. It was in sta. Barbara, Iloilo, the land of my forefathers, where the Philippine flag was first raised outside Luzon. For the muslims, they saw no need to join the revolution. They had no need to regain their independence. They still had it. They only needed to defend it. Thanks to direct importation of american-style public administration, a mere replacement of a window pane required approval from manila. Before that, manila was just a swampy outskirt ruled by a less powerful rajah. The crescent has long been associated with Islam, despite the symbol’s pagan origin. International organization and many muslim countries have crescent on their flags. even singapore and Nepal, where muslims are a significant minority only, have theirs too. There is nothing wrong making adjustments to our flag. after all, it must represent the ideals of this country and its people. If the flag is intended to represent best, it must evolve. The us flag does that. and so are those of other entities and countries, like uN, uk, somalia, Italy, Germany, russia, etc. Of course, symbols are not ultimate solutions to grassroots problems. They only freeze moments of a proud history in time and space. Given their limited yet powerful role, they should represent well and represent best. a crescent on our flag will do just that.

Mindanao peace process: Not too fast
NDeeD, the signing of the initial peace agreement between the Philippine government under President Benigno aquino III and the moro Islamic Liberation Front (mILF) was historic although not an unprecedented one. In the 40 years of internecine war in most parts of the southern and western parts of mindanao, there were two peace agreements reached and another that almost got under way. These agreements, the 1976 Tripoli agreement and the 1996 Jakarta Peace accords, were between the moro National Liberation Front (mNLF) and the marcos regime and the mNLF and the ramos government respectively. The botched memorandum of agreement on ancestral Domain would have been the third of this kind, but the first involving the mILF. Past Philippine presidents have always regarded the mILF as a breakaway group from the mNLF that can easily be dealt with militarily until the total capitulation of misuari in 1996. when the 1976 Tripoli agreement was signed in Libya with deposed strongman muammar khaddafy as its principal broker and backer, many field commanders and senior leaders of the mNLF saw the accord as a ruse and a trap. The late salamat Hashim wasted no time in seceding from the mNLF to form the mILF and pursued a path to more radical solution to the centuries-old mindanao conflict. salamat would later be vindicated as the marcos regime made a sham of the Tripoli agreement, prompting mNLF chair Nur misuari to resume fighting against the government. By the time misuari realized he fell into the trap laid out by the deposed dictator, the mILF had already made significant headway in recruiting disgruntled senior mNLF commanders and young ideological muslim scholars.

In 1996, misuari finally settled for the 1996 Jakarta Peace accord for which the mNLF was promised greater autonomy. But like the 1976 Tripoli agreement, the Jakarta Peace accord was never meant to give the Bangsamoro the right to full self-determination. They still were left to the mercy of a Congress dominated by landlords and big business who saw any political accommodation of the moro people as threat to their continued reign in mindanao. The promise of genuine autonomy was reduced to the granting of ministerial powers that only went to the traditional adversaries of the moro rebels, the moro warlords and politicians. misuari, after serving a term as governor of the autonomous region in muslim mindanao, would eventually lose his pre-eminent role in the Bangsamoro struggle. President Fidel ramos also tried to reach out to the mILF by initiating peace negotiations with the moro rebel group that had already surpassed the armed strength of the mNLF with whom he signed a peace agreement. But ramos ran out of time. His successor, former President Joseph estrada, instead of pursuing peace, chose a path of destruction by ordering an all-out war with the mILF. President Gloria macapagal arroyo, who succeeded him, did the same only tocave in to pressures for a negotiated political settlement with the mILF. In 2008, the arroyo government and the mILF were close to signing the mOaaD. But it came at a time when President arroyo’s credibility ratings were at their lowest and suspicions that she was using the peace pact as a medium to amend
the Constitution and perpetuate herself in power only reinforced the position of the anti-moro block in Congress as well as local government officials. The well-intentioned mOa-aD did not even get past the supreme Court where its opponents sought legal relief. It was declared unconstitutional and its defeat immediately plunged parts of predominant muslim mindanao areas to the brink of civil war. The botched mOa-aD signing also drove a wedge inside the mILF with senior mILF commander ameril umra kato forming his own Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighter (BIFF). The mILF has come full circle. On monday, the mILF agreed to a Framework agreement on the Bangsamoro (FaB). Far from being a peace deal, however, the initial agreement is largely a broad stroke document where the mILF practically left the future of its struggle for self-determination in the hands of Congress although the creation of Bangsamoro to replace armm is already a moral victory for the mILF as the word literally means “moro nation.” The organic act that will create the new autonomous political entity (NPe) to embody the aspiration of the moro people, unfortunately, is within the realm of political reality where their previous leaders have failed before. How the present mILF leadership will be able to reverse the history of capitulation, surrender and betrayal that led to the failures of their past struggles is a task Chairman murad al haj ebrahim and the rest of the central committee members cannot afford to fail. The FaB is just the first step to a long journey for peace in mindanao. ending the war is way easier than achieving a just and lasting peace. Now the hardest part of the quest for peace begins. Bringing opportunities to farmers
He dragon fruit is a very popular product in Ilocos region because of its medicinal value and other by-products that promise sure income for farmers. edita aguinaldo Dacuycuy has the largest dragon fruit plantation in Paayas, Burgos, Ilocos Norte with around 15,000 fruit-bearing plants in her 10-hectare farm. a visit to her farm by several members of the local media from Iloilo for a study tour to some agriculture-supported programs in selected provinces of regions 1 and 3 over the weekend revealed the potentials of the product. Her discovery of the wonder fruit was purely accidental -her daughter is a cerebral palsy special child. The dragon fruit was given to them by a friend who learned about her daughter’s constipation problem. “we tried it on her and it did work like magic; it was really effective. It was a general cleansing fruit and not just for constipation. The fact that it is a cleansing fruit it cleanses the whole system thus allowing the normal and effective functions of the body,” she shared. They started a backyard garden with 15 poles, four plants are tied in every pole, to have a ready source for their child. “when we got started we realized there are some other people who needed it to. There are those who also suffer from constipation, thus we decided to move into a small farm,” she said. Propagating dragon fruit is not labor intensive because it is a desert plant, she claims. It belongs to the cactus family, thus it thrives, especially during summer but it can also withstand rains. “I always encourage every family even the grade schools they can manage to have their dragon fruit plant,” she said. The farmer has to invest once in planting materials and poles. There is not much of a land preparation, she said. It has a life span of 50 years or even beyond depending on how
Special Feature By PerlA G. lenA the plants are being maintained. You just lay down the measurement where you will place your poles at a distance of 2.5 x 2 meters, she said. The area where the poles will be placed is the place that you should clean. The plant is expected to bear fruits at the maximum of 16 months; eight months to one year for big planting materials; and one year and a half for smaller planting materials. The fruit-bearing season starts in april and ends in November. The peak season is between may to July. The return in investment is felt on the third year while the first two years will probably be on the interest of the capital spent, she said. each pole or post (with four planting materials) can produce around 30 to 50 kilos in a year. with the case of Dacuycuy, they have 15,000 fruit-bearing trees and they harvest around 10 to 12 times annually. Their cooperative agreed to sell the fruit at P150 a kilo. meantime, they are currently looking at adapting a technology in Vietnam that will allow them to have a year-round production, she disclosed. The fruit may last up to 15 days but for a longer shelf-life, it is advised to have it wrapped in newspaper and place in chiller. The fruit in pink or white color is about similar in size to the apple guava but when opened, its softer and yummier. Its seeds are also smaller compared to that of a guava. Dacuycuy admitted that even with their vast plantation, still they could not meet the demand of their traders in manila and Baguio. They have already gone to as far as Visayas
promoting the dragon fruit. “For the moment, we cannot export because we don’t even have enough to supply our traders,” she said. The fresh fruit is not only good for constipation but also for prevention of heart disease, stress and hypertension, she cited. Its by-products include ice cream, cookies, lumpia, candy, tea, wine, vinegar and soap, among others, made from the various parts of the plant. Currently, her farm grew initial 11 varieties but added another 19 from California when she got her award as ‘Female Innovator awardee’ during the asia Pacific economic Cooperation (aPeC) women and economy summit held sept 13-16, 2011 in san Francisco. meanwhile, amador s. sadumiano, provincial center chief of the Department of agriculture in Ilocos, stated that the dragon fruit is considered an emerging high value commercial crop (HVCC) in their area. Their provincial government, he said, is very supportive of the endeavor. However, their province could not seal an agreement with an interested foreign market because their production could not meet the required monthly volume requirement, he added. On the other hand, Juvy Gaton, chief of the regional agri-Fishery Information Division (raFID) here in western Visayas, said that several private citizens in this region have embarked on dragon fruit but only in their backyard, specifically in towns of Badiangan and san miguel. she said the Da is optimistic that these best farming practices of other regions will also be replicated in western Visayas to uplift the lives of farmers. she added that the regional office here is willing to provide inputs and assist them in looking for market should farmers decide to propagate dragon fruits. ( Conclusion )
F you can think of it and expend minimal effort getting it, you will. This is the secret of point-of-sale displays (and why parents want the candy bars banned from the checkout line). which brings us to eBay and its new look. It jazzes up the place and projects a more upscale feel — definitely stepping away from its bohemian roots. But it has the feel of a victory in a race to nowhere. redesigns are a tricky business. Digg dug its grave with one. Craigslist hasn’t bothered to do soonce, and thrives, in more or less the same rough waters as eBay, in fact. (It helps to have a business model where you don’t mind leaving money on the table, something eBay, as a public company, cannot.) mostly, though, what matters is that a new-and-improved web strategy doesn’t really matter. The battlefield is elsewhere. eBay is innovating: witness eBay Now (unveiled at the New York press conference but only available to san Francisco customers). It’s an “I waNT IT NOw” service, which explains the tiny initial rollout: Order something, and they drive it to you, sometimes within an hour. They aren’t the first to do this – amazon and wal-mart also offer same-day service – but it’s the right kind of thing to experiment with. witness also “stuff”, which creates a record of all your shopping – anywhere online – based on a scan of receipts you’ve been e-mailed from any vendor. It’s like the amazon magazine subscription manager: It doesn’t make eBay a penny per se, but it does increase the company’s relevance in your life, and that could lead to further engagement. But there’s so much more for eBay to do. To start with, it needs to stop focusing on the web. Dazzle customers with experience and not products, which are just commodities. stop trying to get people to browse as if they were curled up with a nice catalog or wandering around a build-

You aren’t the same as a bricks-andmortar department store, whose customers are forced to shop even as they leave the premises. Online, they can teleport out in a nanosecond (and do). Instead, focus on fulfillment – give amazon a run for its money on the delivery and shipping experience. shipping and handling is still ripe for competition. It’s a major retailing differentiator and an outsize decision factor about whether you will be able to make the sale. If eBay really wanted to compete with amazon, it could even get into the subsidized tablet game – everybody’s doing it! alternatively, it can figure out a way to capture that all-elusive customer loyalty by concentrating on service, not merchandise. By focusing more on the shopping experience than the customer experience in its redesign, eBay seems to be missing the point. stores need to disappear, not get prettier. after all, they’re basically already invisible. “His body is currently on display at Beijing Hospital,” sihanouk’s longtime personal assistant Prince sisowath Thomico told aFP. “They will take him straight from the hospital to the airport tomorrow.” Thousands of Cambodians are expected to line Phnom Penh’s streets to mark the final homecoming of the royal known as “king-Father”, who saw his people as his “children”. Cambodia’s strongman Prime minister Hun sen praised the “remarkable and incomparable” former monarch in a condolence letter to sihanouk’s widow Queen monique
and his son, current king Norodom sihamoni. He said the late king would be remembered by his compatriots “for eternity”. The government ordered radio and television stations not to broadcast joyful programmes during the upcoming official mourning period, while entertainment venues have been asked to suspend concerts and performances. No official details have emerged about the funeral plans or how sihanouk’s corpse will be preserved when he lies in state. Prince Thomico told aFP authorities “may use some chemical substances to preserve the body, like
they did for mao Zedong”. sihanouk remained popular despite his abrupt abdication in 2004 on the grounds of old age and poor health, and his reputation for erratic political manoeuvres -- including his ill-fated backing of the murderous khmer rouge. In the Cambodian capital, young and old flocked to the park outside the palace to pay their respects, many of them wearing black ribbons pinned to their clothes in a traditional sign of mourning. “I miss him. I came here to cry and release my sorrow. under his reign we lived happily, he never hurt anyone,” said motherof-six sam sivorn, 58. The comments reflect many Cambodians’ impression of the king as a benevolent leader, despite controversies including sihanouk’s harsh crackdowns on critics. Dozens of university students sang a patriotic song before placing a wreath of yellow and white flowers in front of the palace. In the absence of an official place where grieving people can pay their respects -- the government’s week-long mourning starts on wednesday -- the wreath became an instant shrine, with other tearful mourners kneeling in front of it to pray and lay down white and pink lotus flowers.

These sectors, he added, include the government and non-moro settlers in mindanao, because it is not just a matter of making peace within the bounds of the Bangsamoro entity, “but
we also need to ensure that there’s peace outside the Bangsamoro entity.” “It will become our bottleneck because there will still be a moro who is member of mILF outside the Bangsamoro entity, who will live among us as our neighbors. we need to have understanding among each other not only in the territory of the Bangsamoro,” he told mindaNews. Cabaya noted that in crafting the Basic Law for Bangsamoro that will be done by the Transition Commission, there is a need to ensure the local governments’ relationship with the Bangsamoro entity, and improve the government’s relationship with members of mILF, inside and outside the Bangsamoro entity. “anyway, our country is still whole, whether one is included in the Bangsamoro or in mindanao. we don’t need to fight over that because what’s important is that we’re working as one under one roof – the Philippines,” he stressed. Instead of becoming a roadblock on the people’s aspiration for peace in mindanao, Nograles urged misuari to help in the effort to forge an enduring solution that would end the vicious cycle of conflict in the region. “Chairman Nur can already contribute so much by simply supporting this new endeavor to silence the guns in mindanao. Nobody wins in war. we are all victims of violence,” he stressed. House Committee on Public accountability and Good Government Chair and Iloilo City Congressman Jerry Trenas on the other hand said misuari’s claims are all baseless because the Bangsamoro Framework agreement is not just for the mILF but is an inclusive endeavor embracing all muslims, Christians and Lumads in mindanao. “Instead of inspiring skepticism amongst our people who have been yearning for peace in mindanao, Chairman misuari should help the government and the mILF in ensuring the success of this historic Bangsamoro Framework agreement. It’s time to focus on the war against poverty and neglect for our brothers and sisters in mindanao. even Chairman Nur should appreciate the fact that the government never stopped believing that there’s a peaceful solution to the mindanao problem,” Trenas added. western samar rep. mel senen sarmiento on the other hand urged the people to to rally behind the aquino administration it its quest to end the mindanao conflict and usher in an era of peace and progress in mindanao. sarmiento noted that with the signing of the Bangsamoro Framework agreement, he is confident that the creation of a Bangsamoro region which would require a similar organic act that created the autonomous region for muslim mindanao (armm) would breeze through Congress without any hitch. “I think that everyone is in agreement that we need this law. If and when the Transition Commission that
was created by the framework agreement makes its recommendation, I’m pretty confident that Congress would make this its top priority,” sarmiento said. “as representatives of the people, we will support the final crafting of the basic law which will govern the establishment of the Bangsamoro which will go through the normal legislative process until ratification,” he added. He noted that with the issue of peace and order in mindanao taking its final shape in the form of a peace accord, the people in mindanao can look forward with great expectation that development will change their lives for good. “Not only in mindanao, because peace will pump healthy economic blood into the economy and the entire nation will benefit. Peace is long overdue. The people deserve a better life. we are confident that the provisions of the agreement are all in consonance with the Constitutions,” he said as he expressed confidence that the anticipated peace agreement will not transgress national patrimony and will be in consonance with the provisions of the constitution.

rGaNIZers of the 36th National milo marathon, the country’s biggest footrace, is looking to set a new attendance record this year with 13,000 runners in their radar. The race’s 36th edition is set to take center stage once again on November 11 for the Davao leg beginning and ending at the oft-used course in roxas avenue. This year’s run also aims to promote its advocacy of providing more footwear to underpriv-

The race hopes to share 10,000 pairs or more than twice the number it gave away last year. “we are proud to do the run again this year for milo and this time we look forward to a tremendous response from our running community,” said kenneth sai, the local race organizer, who will have his hands full again this time with the enormity of the technical requirements to hold the biggest race of the year. For the Davao leg,

aT your hearts out azkals, the Lions want the Cup too. singapore’s soccer players will use an agonizing malaysia Cup semifinal defeat to spur them to victory in next month’s asean Football Federation (aFF) Cup, they said on monday. The Lions xII, a club side managed by the singaporean Football association (Fas) but competing in the malaysian super League, suffered a penalty shootout loss in the Cup semifinals last week. Players who will don the national team’s colors next month have vowed to atone in style in the aFF suzuki Cup. “I’m hungry to make up for the loss,” said Yasir Hanapi, who missed the decisive spot-kick against malaysia’s aTm Fa. Fourteen Lions xII players are in raddy avramovic’s 23-man singapore national squad, and first will face India
in a friendly on home soil on Tuesday. “Coming so close and not making it – that will spur us on,” attacking midfielder shahdan sulaiman told the straits Times newspaper. singapore also play the Philippines in Cebu on Nov. 15 before they get their aFF suzuki Cup campaign underway on Nov. 25 against holders malaysia. “It is no good thinking about the semifinal,” national team and Lions xII skipper shahril Ishak said. “It has to be motivation for us to win something at international level.” The aFF suzuki Cup, held every two years, features eight teams from south-east asian. Thailand will host one group including Vietnam, Philippines and myanmar; while malaysia’s group includes Indonesia, singapore and Laos. The tournament spans Nov. 24-Dec. 22.

pleted an improbable trip to the NCaa Finals. “kumpyansa kami na papasok sa Finals,” said abueva, moments after the twice-to-beat stags dropped a 70-73 setback to the knights in their sudden-death match. “Di ko din alam ano nangyari, binigay namin ‘yung lahat ng kaya namin pero ‘di lang talaga lumusot.” a season filled with so much hope for abueva now ends in disappoint-
ment. First to go was his mVP trophy, which he lost when he committed a bonehead disqualifying foul in the eliminations. Now he bids goodbye to a championship trophy he had yearned to win. “siguro ‘di lang para sa amin ‘to,” he said, grudgingly accepting defeat. “sana maging aral sa amin yung mga nangyari, maging aral na rin sa kanilang mga maiiwan (sa team).”
aNsas CITY, kansas—Jurgen klinsmann promised to bring an attacking style to the us national team when the former Germany striker took the reins of the program more than a year ago. His approach won’t change even when a draw would suit the americans just fine. The us merely needs to draw with Guatemala on Tuesday night for both teams to advance from Group a in world Cup qualifying, while a result one
way or the other would give Jamaica an outside chance of squeaking through to the final round. Don’t expect either team to bunker down, though. especially the americans. “Our approach to the game is clear. we want to win this game. You can only win a game if you attack and go forward, and that’s what we’re going to do,” klinsmann said before a final training session at Livestrong sporting Park on monday. “we’re not go-
ing to look for a tie.” even though that might be the prudent move. The us set up the enviable situation with a ragged 2-1 victory over antigua and Barbuda on Friday, a game that was played on a tiny cricket pitch-turnedquagmire. The performance wasn’t a thing of beauty, either. The americans struggled through the wind and were hampered by the tight quarters of the field, and needed a pair of goals from eddie Johnson to beat the
last-place team in its group. Johnson’s header in the 90th minute secured the victory. “we’re honest enough with ourselves to look at things and say, ‘This needs to be better,’” midfielder michael Bradley said. “I can assure you the mentality, the spirit within the group is really good. a quality of a big team is to come away with points, to come away with wins, on days when you don’t play your best, when conditions aren’t perfect. we take great pride in that.”

Or former national team coach rajko Toroman, Petron rookie June mar Fajardo and ateneo center Greg slaughter, two celebrated big men owing to their size and skill, are not yet ripe for big international events like the Fiba-asia men’s championships. while insisting he was not trying to put down smart Gilas 2.0 coach Chot reyes’ efforts to beef up the national squad for next year’s Fiba asia men’s in Beirut, Toroman said he believes Fajardo and slaughter have a long way to go before they can hold their own against against asia’s best big men. The 6-10 Fajardo and slaughter, 6-11, are two of the big men reyes hopes to recruit to beef up a Gilas team that won the Jones Cup and finished fourth in the Fiba asia Cup during the PBa offseason. “In my opinion, June mar isn’t ready yet (for Fiba-asia). even Greg isn’t ready for that yet,” Toroman, said as he sat on
ringside watching a PBa game at the smart araneta Coliseum. Toroman said both big men, though dominant in college because of their size, still have a lot to work on as far as quickness and agility is concerned. “Both June mar and Greg have to improve on their quickness. International play is very different. so they really need to work on quickness drills and agility,” added Toroman, currently serving as Petron’s team consultant. Before becoming this year’s PBa top rookie pick, Fajardo played for the san miguel Beermen in the asean Basketball League (aBL) last season. The Pinamungajan, Cebu native is coming off a big game against san mig Coffee on sunday night where his tremendous potential came in full display. He finished with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and a 4-of-7 clip from the foul line to go with 13 rebounds, three steals, and a block shot.
Calvin Abueva finished his collegiate stint with no title for San Sebastian. He marches on to the PBA to sit up for Alaska.

WOMEN
On foot down the urban jungle
In my cosmopolitan kind of jungle, I’d say everyone has an animal instinct when it comes to fashion. By that I refer to a person’s fierce approach to individuality and style authority amidst various clothing options. A person with eagle eyes can easily single out which shoes would match a certain look or add character to it. Life in four inch heels can command a lot of attention and elevate you inches closer to heaven, but staying “grounded” (meaning walking on flats) always feels like enjoying heaven on earth.
If there’s comfort food, there’s probably something we can call comfort footwear. For instance, ballet flats add class and sophistication to your feet while sandals give you that sexy and casual feel whether in the sunny tropic or air conditioned malls. Another fun alternative to sandals are flip flops which has gained much respect and following in this modern time. “Flip flops” is the better version / term of the slippers of the old days. These funky and colorful accessories for the feet have made a mark in the history of fashion. With the colorful variations, chic embellishments, and prints, the society has
welcomed the marriage of elegance and flip flops --- Casual elegance, so to speak. One of the many brands of flip flops that have become a status quo on its own is Ipanema. Exuding the festive and exotic vibe of the beaches of Brazil, Ipanema has long since created a name synonymous to creativity and fun. They never go amiss with their collections of bright hues, bold prints, and vibrant patterns. Strengthening its positioning as a daring and dynamic brand, the Ip-
anema’s tree of style sensibilities branched out to Davao City with its Urban Jungle Fashion Show last October 12. Reflecting its fierce and brave approach to styling, the fashion show proved to be unique on its own with a dance repertoire depicting some exotic creatures. In a way, the experience was similar to watching “Lion King” on stage. The dance-heavy fashion show displayed the latest collection of “animated” pieces, which are designed to encompass diverse tastes and
personalities of every fashion animal. Ipanema flip flops’ strong and durable form was able to sustain with the dancers’ movements throughout the show. The production design and balletic approach was a colorful feast for the senses. The formula, choreography, and direction were very original. And I guess that is a testament to Ipanema’s brand and character: It always bring something new and original to the community. [Photos by Lean Daval Jr.]

Avoid the following foods that can wreck your mood--brought to you by the creators of The Happiness Diet—and you’ll be on the fast track to a happier body and mind! Potato chips The Joy-Killing Truth: Between the winter holidays and football season, it’s nearly impossible to dodge potato chips. But those taters are likely fried up in oils laden with omega-6 fatty acids that block out mood-enhancing, brain-building omega-3 fatty acids. Frying potatoes also creates the carcinogen acrylamide Healthy Switch: Save money and your health by making these Easy Homemade Snacks, including your own microwavable popcorn. For a healthier, occasional potato fix, try baking smaller spuds with red or blue skin—the colored skin is packed with phytonutrients that benefit your mind and body. Conventional Holiday Ham The Joy-Killing Truth: Conventional hams come from factory farms where pigs are pumped full of antibiotics. These hams are also injected with sugar, salt, fillers, and nitrate preservatives that can trigger low moods, migraines, and even swollen ankles, and “cankles” can make anyone seriously depressed! Healthy Switch: Try a new holiday tradition: Wild-caught Alaskan salmon, bursting with memorypreserving, mood-boost-
ing omega-3 fats DHA and EPA. A 2008 study found that fish oil containing the same omega-3s found in wild salmon is just as effective as Prozac in treating depression. Wild salmon is lower in contaminants like mercury, too. If fish isn’t your thing, opt for pastureraised pork loin—a top source of thiamine, a B vitamin needed for proper nervous system functioning. Soda The Joy-Killing Truth: It’s estimated that the average American drinks a whopping 600 sodas a year. These drinks turn to fat inside our bodies, sending our moods plummeting after the initial sugar rush, explains Dr. Ramsey. Healthy Switch: As a replacement, try adding a bit of organic fruit juice to soda water. Margarine The Joy-Killing Truth: For decades, scientists debated what was healthier for humans, margarine or butter. now, the science is clear—margarines made of inflammation-promoting, industrial fats are harmful, and the high levels of omega-6 fatty acids could tamper with our mood and healthy insulin levels, too. Food corporations continue to change formulations,
but the same thing is clear: Margarine is fake food, and the body doesn’t know how to deal with it. Healthy Switch: Pastured butter—meaning butter from grass-fed cows—is higher in a special kind of fat called conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA. This fat features anticancer properties and has been shown to slash belly fat, lower heart attack risk. Pastured butter also packs a brain-healthy omega-3 punch that industrial fats used for margarine can’t deliver. Peanuts The Joy-Killing Truth: The packaged, salted peanuts commonly served at holiday parties are high in sodium and questionable food additives, including monosodium glutamate (MSG), an artificial flavoring linked to migraines, weakness, burning sensations, wheezing, and difficulty breathing in some people—and who wants to deal with that at a holiday party? Healthy Switch: Create a brain food nut mix by combining omega-3-rich walnuts, almonds rich in vitamin E, which protects vital brain fat, and a few selenium-rich Brazil nuts. (Selenium deficiencies are linked to depression and
suicide.) For an added mood-boosting kick, toss the nut mix with rosemary and sea salt, and roast in the oven at 300 degrees for 15 minutes. Researchers are studying rosemary’s potential role as a brainprotecting herb. Vegetable Shortening The Joy-Killing Truth: Common in holiday baking, you should avoid vegetable shortening for the same reason you should be bypassing industrialfat-derived margarine—an increase in omega-6 fatty acids that block out brainbuilding, mood-promoting omega-3 fatty acids. Healthy Switch: “The shocking baking swap is using pastured lard instead of vegetable shortening,” says Dr. Ramsey. The reason? The main fat in lard--oleic acid—is a monounsaturated fat linked to decreased risk of depression. Look for pastured lard from a local farmer who raises grass-fed livestock. Lard gets a bad wrap because of saturated fat content, but Dr. Ramsey notes that stearic acid, the main saturated fat in lard, isn’t linked to an increase in heart disease, nor does it impact cholesterol levels. Sugar-Packed Sweet Potatoes The Joy-Killing Truth: Many packaged sweet potatoes and even homemade recipes for candied or marshmallow casserole sweet potatoes call for multiple cups of sugar that will start the suffering process for your brain and mood minutes after eating. High blood sugar levels actually age our blood vessels, shrink our brains, damage vision and nerve function, and increase our risk of depression and Alzheimer’s disease. Healthy Switch: naked sweet potatoes—ones baked without all of the added sugar—are loaded with beta-carotene, a fatsoluble, brain-protecting antioxidant the body uses to manufacture vitamin A. This vitamin promotes the enzymes that create moodregulating neurotransmitters like dopamine. The Happiness Diet authors note that an even better form of vitamin A comes from products like butter and eggs produced by animals raised on pasture, so don’t be afraid to add a bit of butter with this kind of pedigree to your sweet potatoes. Fuller lineup gives Azkals more options vs Kuwait
T
He Philippine azkals are expecting a difficult game against higher-ranked kuwait in their FIFa international friendly on Tuesday night. But coach Hans michael Weiss will be fielding a complete roster against kuwait’s al azraq (The Blue). according to the azkals’ official website, the Filipino squad’s offensive lineup will be beefed up by Filipino-spanish angel Guirado and Demitrius Omphroy. Omphroy had to sit out the Bahrain friendly due to stomach flu, while Guirado was also unavailable. siblings Phil and James Younghusband are also joining the fold after missing the Philippine
Football Peace Cup due to scheduling problems. Filipino-British keeper Neil etheridge will also man the post against kuwait. The azkals are seeking vengeance against kuwait, which won their two-game duel in the World Cup Qualifiers last year. The 112nd-ranked kuwait defeated the Philippine squad, 5-1, on aggregate. The vastly improved azkals hope they will fare batter this time around. The azkals, rated No. 147 in the world, recently held 115th-ranked Bahrain to a scoreless standoff. The exhibition games are part of the azkals preparations for the suzuki cup this November.

Nonito Donaire punches Toshioka Nishioka during the WBO Super Bantamweight Title fight at The Home Depot Center on Sunday in Carson, California.
Donaire deserves P4P ranking
N
ONITO “The Filipino Flash” Donaire’s dominant performance against Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka in their super bantamweight clash last saturday justifies his ranking as one of the top poundfor-pound boxers in the world. This, according to esPN boxing analyst Dan rafael. rafael was impressed with Donaire’s ninthround technical knockout victory over Nishioka, who was a former super bantamweight champion and one of Japan’s top fighters. “Fight after fight, Donaire has taken on quality opponents and won easily. He did it again against Nishoka, a serious opponent,” rafael said. “For Donaire to dominate such a quality opponent the way he did tells you just how good he is, and that he is well deserving of his place in the pound-for-pound top 10,” he added. Donaire is currently ranked seventh in esPN’s pound-for-pound list, and fifth in The RING poundfor-pound ratings. “Nishioka was no joke,
even though he fought a disappointing fight. He came into the bout regarded as Japan’s best fighter and he had the credentials to warrant that status, in addition to inclusion on the esPN. com top 20 pound-forpound,” rafael wrote. But Nishioka fought very cautiously against Donaire, throwing only eight punches in the opening round and keeping his right hand up nearly the entire time. He was knocked down in the sixth round by a left uppercut, which spurred him into greater action. Once Nishioka opened up, however, Donaire was able to show his counter-punching ability. Pinned against the ropes in the ninth round, “The Filipino Flash” countered Nishioka’s flurry with a perfect counter-right. The fight was stopped moments later. “This was an excellent victory for Donaire, who said he thought it was his biggest win,” rafael said. meanwhile, in a story on Grantland, rafe Bartholomew – the author of “Pacific Rims” – noted that “Donaire’s opponents quickly go from
fighting to surviving.” Bartholomew said that since he brutally knocked out Fernando montiel in February 2011, “Donaire hasn’t had an opportunity to put on a dazzling performance.” “The fighters Donaire has faced all take on the instincts of a pill bug once they feel his power. we rarely see the full range of Donaire’s skills, such as counter-punching and defense, because his foes don’t give him much reason to use them,” he wrote. “Instead, we see him chase guys who just want to avoid getting knocked out, and we judge him based on how artfully he stalks them,” Bartholomew added. Bartholomew asserts that if this trend continues for Donaire, then fight fans may have to change the way they judge the best boxers in the world. “Is the best fighter in the world the guy who shows the most complete and sublime skills, or is it the guy whose speed and power is so scary that it convinces professional fighters that against him, the last thing they want to do is fight?”
Perasol, the former mentor of Powerade in the PBa, had actually signed a three-year contract to fill in for Black, who had left after eight fruitful seasons to call the shots for Talk n Text in the pro loop. But Perasol got in a dilemma for it was manny V. Pangilinan who was instrumental in bringing him in. Pangilinan had severed ties with the Jesuit school in the stretch of season 75. “while I’m grateful for the trust of ateneo in me, there was really no doubt in my mind as to who my Patron and Benefactor is and that is mVP. I believe that our mutual agree-
ment to release each other from the contract is what’s best for all concerned. I wish ateneo well,” Perasol said. with Perasol out, ateneo is looking at the current coaching staff for the job, particularly assistant coach sandy arespacochaga and Jamike Jarin. “Obviously, coach sandy is being considered, being the first assistant coach. He will probably be the prime candidate. Coach Jamike is also someone to consider,” said Trillo, also not discounting the possibility that an outsider might be considered.
Perasol won’t be Black’s successor in Ateneo
T
He search for Norman Black’s replacement as coach of five-peat UAAP men’s cage champ ateneo drags on. according to Blue eagles team manager Paolo Trillo, ateneo released Bo Perasol from his contractual obligations to assume coaching chores after a meeting with university president Fr. Jett Villarin last monday. “Fr. Jett told me that in his meeting with Perasol, they have mutually agreed to release each other from the obligations of the contract, so coach Bo won’t be our coach next season,” Trillo said yesterday.
