PAPABILE. With the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle is considered among the leading “papabile” Italian for pope-able cardinals.
Tagle among front-running papabile
M
ANILA Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle is in the short list of ‘papabile’ or pope-able cardinals. An Asian Catholic online news website has reported that if elected by the College of Cardinals, the 55-year old Tagle could be the youngest pope in centuries. News of Tagle being in the short list of 12 papabile was reported by independent Catholic News website www.ucanews.com.
The papacy is to be vacated on February 28 when Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation takes effect. He is the first Pope to resign in 600 years. The ucanews report mentioned Tagle as the best candidate from Asia. The report said: “Asia is a small but potent source of growth and strength for the Catholic Church. Of all the bishops in this diverse continent, one stands out: Cardi-
nal Luis Antonio Tagle, archbishop of Manila in the Philippines. At 55, he is something of a “baby bishop,” and he would be the youngest pope in centuries. But Tagle is very appealing: smiling, humble and perceptive, Tagle impressed many of his fellow bishops during the 2012 Synod on New Evangelization in Rome. He called for a more humble church that puts more effort in listening to its flock; just a

TF Pablo eyes full exodus T from flood-stricken areas By EJ Dominic Fernandez
T
ASK Force Pablo proposed full exodus from flood prone areas to safer zones in Pablo-stricken areas in Compostela Valley during their meeting at the provincial capitol of Nabunturan in ComVal last February 15. During the presentation of the Department of Science and technology (DOST), Secretary Mario G. Montejo showed a 3D topographic map made possible by means of the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology under Project Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (NOAH) showing both danger and safe zones in the municipalities of New Bataan, Monkayo and Compostela. Based on the 3D topographic map, Task Force Pablo showed where residents should be transferred from danger zones to safer areas zones as where they could rebuild a new
and better community. Montejo said President Benign Aquino was dismayed by what Pablo had done, and that it must never happen again, referring to the loss in lives and damages brought by the typhoon. This prompted the President to order the task force is to look for safer places where new communities could be rebuilt. With the help of the LiDAR system DOST would be able to determine approximately floods would occur in case of future typhoons like Pablo. Montejo said LiDAR technology will be able to determine the worst scenarios in the next 100 years. Undersecretary Lesley Cordero, representing Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Rene Almendras, who heads Task Force Pablo, said, “The first step is to come to ComVal to discuss with the local gov-
Palace to candidates: Report NPA extortion
M
ALACANANG appealed to candidates running in this year’s midterm election not to give in to the demands of the New People’s Army (NPA) asking huge amounts of money before the candidates can enter rebel strongholds to campaign. The Armed Forces (AFP) reported the NPA is charging each candidate as high as P5 million to campaign as well as “permit” to win. In a radio interview over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan Saturday, Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said NPA’s extortion activities must be stopped, asking candidates to report to authorities if they are approached by the rebels. “That is not something that is required, that is not something that is tolerated, at umaapela tayo doon sa mga kumakandidato na let’s not give in to
these demands, especially, sinasabi nilang pang-campaign permit daw ito and to report to the proper authorities kapag merong ganitong panghihingi sa inyo,” Valte said. Valte made the appeal not only to administration candidates, but also to all candidates who are running, to shun the practice. The military said the NPA’s campaign fees range from P50,000 to P5 million, or P5 million from the candidates for governor, P500,000 from the candidates for vice governor or congressman, P100,000 from the candidates for provincial board member or mayor, P75,000 from candidates for vice mayor, and P50,000 from candidates for councilor. The rebels also demand money from candidates to “ensure” their victory in areas controlled by the rebels. (PNA)

DSWD Sec. Soliman said that the main challenge would be how to convince the residents that the safe zones are the best places to rehabilitate, which is why with the help of the explanation of DOST, the local government would be able to disseminate the information properly.

Cayetano: economic growth not felt “T
HE masses do not feel the 6.6% growth rate. What they feel is 5-6.” This is what Senate minority leader Alan Peter Cayetano learned as he visited vendors and consumers today at the Murphy Public Market in Quezon City. The prevalent “5-6” practice is a loan operation where debtors are charged a hefty 20 percent in interest as opposed to bank rates that average around 6 to 8 percent or 15 percent for rural banks. Vendors at the market today explained that they resort to borrowing from “5-6” operators because they have no other means to make ends meet and because borrowing from legitimate financial institutions is a difficult process Cayetano explained that vendors resort to the 5-6 practice due to lack of capital. “Sa gobyerno, pag hihiram ka ng puhunan, masyadong mahaba ang proseso. Sa isang araw, kailangan mong mag-absent, pumila ng matagal at magpasa ng mga papeles. Sa 5-6, text lang, may puhunan ka na,(Borrowing money from the government is a long process. You need to take a day off from work, wait in line for such a long time and pass papers. With 5-6 operators, one text is all you need), he said. He emphasized that this practice must be stopped because it is hurting instead of helping vendors as well as micro-entrepreneurs. “Ang

town. The company is targeting the completion of the initial 30-ton per hour mill by June while the remaining 30-ton per hour mill will be due for commercial operations in two years, she said. Dillera said four new modern muscovado processing plants were also established last year in Lambayong and Isulan towns. She said such development established the province of Sultan Kudarat as the country’s “leader” in muscovado production at a combined capacity of 600 tons per month. The official said the preparatory activities for the expansion in the area of the banana plantations of Lapanday and Del Monte Philippines were completed last year. She said top executives of Del Monte based in the United States and Hong Kong visited the province last December to reiterate their interest on investing in Sultan Kudarat. “The company is initially planning to open a 1,000-hectare banana plantation,” she said. In the coastal municipalities of Lebak and
Kalamansig, Dillera said additional investments were infused by local fisherfolk in bangus (milkfish) production following the adoption of a new technology introduced by the Sarangani province-based Alson’s Aquaculture Corporation. The Alcantara-led company, which is a known leader in bangus production, tied up with the local fisherfolk for the production, processing and marketing of export quality bangus. “The series of investment forum, investment matching and consultancies conducted by various government agencies along with the support extended by the local government units paved the way for these expansions and new investments,” Dillera said. For this year, she said DTI will focus its assistance in further developing the area’s existing and emerging industries that includes coffee, palm oil, banana, rubber, coconut, muscovado, bamboo, calamansi, bangus, pangasius, handicraft, tourism and renewable energy. Last week, Sarangani Energy Corp., developer of the 210 MW coal power plant, officially turned over the construction site to the contractor, Korean firm Daelim Industrial Co. Ltd. The project is expected to generate at least 1,000 jobs during the construction phase with priority given to local residents, Contreras said. Located near a worldclass scuba diving spot, the coal plant project is strongly opposed by environmental groups like Greenpeace, including the local Catholic Church, on concerns over human health and the environment. ENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Sultan Kudarat province generated a total of P762.94 million worth of investments last year as the area’s business prospects remain attractive to investors, an official said. Nelly Nita Dillera, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Sultan Kudarat provincial director, said the recorded investments in the province in 2012 increased by P192.33 million or about 25 percent compared to the previous year. In 2011, she said the entire province attracted a total of P570.61 million worth of investments from micro to large-scale ventures. Dillera said the major investments that entered the area last year were the expansions in coffee, palm oil, rubber and banana plantations; muscovado and oil palm processing; and bangus production. In 2012, she said Kenram Industries Development, Inc. started the development of a 60ton per hour processing mill to address the daily queuing of oil palm delivery trucks in front of its plant in Isulan

Congress strengthens Animal Welfare Act T
HE House of Representatives approved on second reading a measure promoting and protecting welfare of all animals in the Philippines by increasing penalties on animal welfare offenses to deter individuals from violating the law. House Bill 6893 penalizes violators with a maximum imprisonment of two years and/or a fine not exceeding PhP100,000 if an animal dies from cruelty, maltreatment or neglect. If an animal subjected to cruelty, maltreatment or neglect survives but is severely injured and lost its natural faculty to survive on its own, therefore needing human interven-
tion to sustain its life, violators will be penalized with one year and six months’ imprisonment and/or fined not exceeding PhP50,000. Also, a lesser fine of Php30,000 and six months’ imprisonment will be meted on persons who subject any animal to cruelty, maltreatment or neglect even without causing its death or jeopardizing its capacity to survive on its own. The bill amends Republic Act No. 8485 (Animal Welfare Act Of 1998) which provides a penalty of imprisonment between six months to two years or a fine of Php1,000 to Php5,000 or both at the court’s discretion.
One of the measure’s principal authors Rep. Bernadette Herrera-Dy (Bagong Henerasyon party list) said cruel acts against animals abound in social networking sites and in cyberspace. She attributed such acts to the law’s measly fines and provision allowing animal offenders to serve their sentences out of jail on parole. “It is time that we Filipinos are recognized for our compassion to animals as this evokes the finest elements of our humanity. To be firm and resolute in condemning and punishing acts which show utter disregard for life protects our society from deteriorating into
one whose people are less humane towards each other. Animal welfare directly translates to human welfare,” she said. The bill aims to give greater representation to the animal welfare movement or organizations in the Committee on Animal Welfare (CAW) with at least two representatives from Luzon, two from Visayas and two from Mindanao. CAW is mandated to periodically recommend to the Animal Welfare Division (AWD) revised code of practice for practical guidance. It also seeks to regulate operation and maintenance of animal facilities or any establishment
where animals are kept for whatever reason or purpose. The bill creates an AWD in the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) under Department of Agriculture (DA) which will be responsible for overseeing, supervising, regulating and promoting welfare of animals including all animal facilities and establishment where animals are held, treated, maintained, bred, trained or kept. The bill also mandates the appointment of regional, provincial and city animal welfare officers and deputized animal welfare enforcement officers to assist BAI-AWD in implementing the animal welfare law.
Aside from Herrera-Dy, the bill’s authors include representatives Ma. Amelita Calimbas-Villarosa (Lone District, Occidental Mindoro), Anthony Golez (Lone District, Bacolod City), Angelo Palmones (Party-list, AGHAM), Reynaldo Umali (2nd District, Oriental Mindoro), Deputy Speaker Maria Isabelle Climaco (1st District, Zamboanga City), Jane Castro (2nd District, Capiz), Diosdado Macapagal Arroyo (2nd District, Camarines Sur), Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (2nd District, Pampanga), JC Rahman Nava (Lone District, Guimaras) and Marlyn Primicias-Agabas (6th Distric, Pangasinan). Pres. Aquino signs amended AMLA
P
RESIDENT Benigno S. Aquino III signed Friday Republic Act 10365 or the law called “An Act Further Strengthening the Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2001” giving more teeth to the existing laws against money laundering. Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in an interview over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan Saturday the amended law is the third component of the government’s action plans that it has committed to the Finance Action Task Force (FATF). The new law revises and expands the definition of money laundering as a crime. It now criminalizes knowingly possessing, using, transporting, acquiring, concealing, moving and disguising criminal proceeds, Valte explained. Valte also said that the signing of R.A. 10365 will satisfy the requirement of the FATF, as it is expected to review the Philippines’s compliance on February 18 to 22 in Paris, France. “We’re very hopeful that with the passage of this particular law, makita naman ng FATF na talagang seryoso tayo sa commitment natin na labanan ang money laundering,” she said. “And, in fact, ang mga opisyal ng AMLAC ay paalis mamayang hapon or bukas para makarating sila sa meeting with the FATF at ipadadala na nila ang compliance natin sa mga points ng action plan.” The law will put enough safeguards against illegally acquired money or assets because it makes banks accountable for accepting dirty money. Before the amend-
ment, money laundering was confined to the transaction of the proceeds of a particular crime, Valte said. But with the amendment, the Philippines now complies with the UN Convention versus Illegal Drugs, the Transnational Organized Crime, Crime and Corruption and the UN Political Declaration against Money Laundering. R.A. 10365 was also to cover more predicate crimes, Valte said. From 14 it now has 34 predicate crimes. It now includes environmental crimes, human trafficking, bribery, corruption of public official, currency counterfeiting, sexual exploitation of minors, and terrorism financing. Terrorism financing was the subject of an earlier law that was signed by the President—the R. A. 10168, which he signed on June 18, 2012. The new law also covered more institutions mandated by the government to report dubious transactions. It now includes non-financial businesses and professions. The law also now requires jewelry dealers and real estate dealers to report to the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLAC) suspicious transactions. AMLAC also now has power to require the Land Registration Authority and all Registries of Deeds to report covered transactions that are considered dubious. Asked if the government must also include casinos in the list of covered entities, Valte said the government must first evaluate casino operations before lawmakers decide on doing new amendments. Finding bike racks for your car
M
Y friend Tom just got hooked into biking. On weekends, the two of us take our bikes for our regular ride. Tom is not yet comfortable riding on the road so he has to take his bike in his car to our starting point. Problem is, Tom finds it difficult to get his bike in the rear of his SUV. Like most bike enthusiasts who dread the highway, taking a bike in the car is the hardest part about biking. I suggested that Tom get a bike rack for his SUV. Problem is, Tom doesn’t like his car to look like a mobile hardware (like mine). For Tom and those of you who loves biking but are faced with the dilemma of bringing your bike on your car, here are some tips I found online. Let me share this article from www.consumerreports. org with you. “The objective is simple. You want to carry your bicycle on your vehicle. But there’s a seemingly dizzying selection of bike-rack styles and a wide range of prices from which to choose. In general, this is an advantage, but to get the right bike rack for your needs, you should do some research and compare the different makes and models. The right rack should fit the vehicle properly, securely transport the bikes, and fall within your budget. The wrong rack could be a safety hazard, scratch your vehicle, and possibly lead to a lost, stolen, or damaged bicycle. Consider your needs The key to choosing the right bike rack is accu-
rately defining your needs and assessing your current vehicles. Consider the following when choosing a bike rack: • How often will you use it? • How many bikes need to be transported? • Will you need to change vehicles (e.g., switch the rack between husband’s and wife’s vehicles)? • Is the vehicle leased or rented?
• How much are you willing to spend? • How important is security? • How high can you lift a bicycle by yourself, and hold it in position with one hand? • Do you have a special bike such as a tandem or one with an oddshaped frame? • Does your vehicle already have a tow hitch or roof-mounted utility rack? If so, what is the load capacity? • Does your vehicle have a rear-mounted
spare tire that will interfere with certain types of mounts? • Do you engage in other sports or activities, which may make one rack type more useful or cost-effective than another? Types of racks Bike racks generally fall into three distinct categories: a strap-on trunk rack, a hitch-mount rack, and a roof rack. All types have good and bad points, but not all are available for every vehicle. The strap-on is the least expensive, but the least secure; the roof rack is the most versatile, but the most difficult to use; and the hitch-mount is the most expensive, but easy to operate. There are also specialty racks that are designed specifically for use with pickup trucks or for inside SUVs or vans. Some truck racks can be used above the bed, allowing for storage underneath. Others have specialty mounts that can be attached to rear-mounted spare tires and the rear ladders sometimes found on conversion vans.” Picking the right rack actually depends basically on your vehicle, your bike and your lifestyle. If you’re into biking and will most likely be doing it regularly, train yourself. Later in your biking hobby, you will learn to love riding on the concrete metropolitan jungles. Then you van rest your racks and save on gas. Afterall, that is what biking is all about. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “You can’t buy happiness. But you can buy a bike and that’s pretty close.”

Of love and lovers
I
N TIME for Valentine’s Day and the heart month of February, the Institute of Popular Opinion (IPO), a research body established by the University of Mindanao (UM), conducted an opinion survey on what Dabawenyos think about love and related topics. At first blush, the survey looks like a nonessential and lacking in relevance to society’s serious challenges. Still its results can be instructive especially to those who are hard pressed to find their life partners and those whose marriage is on the wane. Love is… One interesting fact surfaced by the survey is that most Dabawenyos (61.17 percent) think that love is a “sacrifice,” followed by those who believe it is “understanding” with 50 percent, “respect” (46.1 percent), spending “time” with loved ones (44.6 percent). Very few (19.54 percent) think it is “romance.” Men should be… When asked what they are looking for or what they like most about their partners, most women said they like men who have a “sense of humor” (56 percent), followed by those who are “witty and intelligent” (54.4 percent), “romantic” (52 percent), and “religious” (51 percent). To a Dabawenya, a man with good looks is the least attractive to her (30.76 percent), while the second least attractive is a wealthy man (42.2 percent). Women should be … However, the survey found men to be more materialistic than women. Most of

them (57.49 percent) want women who are wealthy, responsible (55 percent), sympathetic and serious (53 percent). Unlike their counterparts, men like the least women who have a sense of humor (44 percent), as well as those who’re witty and intelligent (45.6 percent). Mercifully, both sexes also do not give too much importance to good looks, the findings revealed. Expressions of love… The study went as far as finding what both men and women think are the best ways of expressing one’s love. The findings are as instructive. Men think that giving flowers (54 percent) and saying “I love you” (52.3 percent) are the best ways to express one’s love, but women differ saying that expensive gifts (57.6 percent), romantic messages (57.2 percent), service(57 percent) and kissing and dating (56 percent) are preferred. Cheaters.... The same percentage of men and women (12 percent) admit to having cheated in their relationship. In conclusion, the study findings stated that both “men and women are romantic and affectionate.” They may express love differently “but this is the essence of love and attraction – only opposites attract”—as the Law of Physics suggests. Yes, this is for opposite sexes. What about the middle sex? Another survey is in order. ANTONIO M. AJERO Editor in Chief

HREE SIMPLE words that seemed so difficult to utter. It was 16 years ago when I said my first and last “I love you” to a person so dear to me. It seemed so ironic, but I guess I was just so stingy in verbalizing my feelings to my mother. It must have been cultural milieu and breeding. True, our parents brought us up to be loving of our elders and siblings, caring of our neighbors, and respectful of authority. However, expressing our love for each other through words was unfortunately not part of that upbringing. So in those days, and in the rustic setting of our childhood, we grew up with such misplaced modesty. I love my parents very much and yet I could not recall having said “I love you” to them. It was not until I was 30 when my dear mother was in the throes of death due to cirrhosis of the liver that I realized how wrong I was. She was bedridden for three years and was getting in and out of the hospital. We even resorted to consulting faith healers hoping against hope that she could be cured, but to no avail. I was trembling while I held her cold hand in her death bed before she breathed her last when I uttered those three words that have been unspoken since I was a child. “I love you Nanay,” I whispered to her, telling her we have been praying hard she could be with us much longer. I thanked her for all the love and care that she gave us, her children, and our tatay, and said sorry for the things that I did that might have added burden to her when she was still healthy and nurturing our family. As I caressed her face and kissed her as tears welled from my eyes, I saw her parched lips parting into a smile. It was a clear indication that she had forgiven me. Then she breathed her last and died in my arms. Now that she is gone, I regreted not being so generous in vocalizing my love for her when she was still with us. Who knows the wellness feeling that such expression could have generated somehow lengthened her life. However, rather than making guilt trips about this past mistake, I realized that it was better to learn a lesson from it and resolve not to let it happen again to my own family. Family members should not hesitate to express their feelings in words. Make it a habit and part of bonding and strengthening family ties. Say “I love you” to your papa and mama, especially during special occasions. Don’t leave these simple words unspoken and wait for the time that your parents would be old and too sick to hear and understand you.

When truth is ambushed
O what really happened, Mr. Senate President, Sir? Was then defense secretary and now Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile ambushed shortly before would-be dictator Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law on 22 September 1972? (The official date of the declaration is 21 September 1972, but it was read on radio by Marcos’ propagandist Francisco Tatad at around midnight on the 22nd. It’s been said that Marcos dated it 21 September owing to his belief that numbers that are divisible by seven would bring him luck.) Marcos used the supposed ambush that riddled Enrile’s car with bullets but left him and the other passengers unscathed as an excuse to impose martial rule, in addition to the Moro rebellion in the South and the communist insurgency run by a ragtag group of guerrillas confined to a few villages in Central Luzon. Even a first grader would find it incredible that none of the car occupants sustained wounds. But except for the activists, who would dare question the myth -- or deception -- at that time when the Filipinos were either mesmerized by the promises of the “New Society”
A
or held back in fear by the prospect of landing in the stockades or in unmarked graves if they defied Apo Ferdie? The truth behind the “ambush” lay buried for a long time. Until Enrile revealed the real story on the second day of the Edsa Revolt that toppled Marcos and ushered in the government of Corazon “Cory” Aquino, widow of martyred Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. Enrile, who holed himself up in Camp Crame and Camp Aguinaldo along with then colonel Gregorio Honasan and other members of the Reform the Armed Forces Movement after Marcos discovered their coup plot, revealed in a press conference that the ambush was faked to justify the Martial Law declaration. He also admitted that in his home province Cagayan Valley, they cheated presidential candidate Aquino of at least 200,000 votes.
Fast forward twenty-six years after Edsa. Enrile published [his] autobiography “Juan Ponce Enrile: A Memoir”. In it he reverted to the Martial Law-era version of the “ambush” on him as true, a claim that can only be interpreted as yet another endorsement of the dictatorial rule after having divulged the deception that occurred on the night before Tatad announced the edict that brought the country to its darkest years after World War II. Or perhaps this part of the book simply highlights his bitterness towards the civilian-backed military mutiny that saved his skin but frustrated his ambition to seize Malacanang. Enrile has immortalized what is apparently his final version of that “ambush.” But the debate should not end there. Maybe the archives of the newspapers and TV stations in the Philippines and abroad that covered the Edsa Revolt can help put a closure to the issue. Time to apply forensics to those who wish to revise history for selfish ends. (MindaViews is the opinion section of MindaNews. H. Marcos C. Mordeno can be reached at hmcmordeno@ gmail.com)
the three common bets to join their campaign jaunts, the less it will matter. On the other hand the “Three Snobbish” had already been intimately involved in many of the LP’s Team PNoy campaign activities. As the Tatak Binay Team sorts out its internal mechanics, it will press the advantage of compelling the three to adhere to an earlier arrangement after the group takes a breather from the campaign forays during the weekend, its first since the campaign started. In addition, there will be plenty of “heat” coming from different directions where virtually every crucial issue will be turned into a test for LP and UNA. With President PNoy and his bunch of Team PNoy political strategists maintaining a robust campaign schedules, vice president Binay and Tatak Binay planners could open their eyes for opportunities to make its campaign always as quick as it could be. Meanwhile both campaigns recognize that the next few weeks are crucial for either Team PNoy or Tatak Binay to gain sufficient ground. Party leaders and campaign managers talk hopefully of retreating to a more civilized pace once the summer doldrums begin. But has there ever been a campaign that started nasty and intense only to turn nice and mellow, especially elections in a Philippine setting? Also in what appeared to be a plus factor for Team PNoy is that the power of the office and the media mileage
in their favor would guarantee to make their campaign generally fair and give the party the luxury of staying above the fray. Political pundits observed that UNA campaign strategists, however, see the next few weeks or so as a window of opportunities in which to inflict “real damage” to the LP senatorial contenders before voters get to know much about them. The LP leadership, President PNoy above all, has good reason to be confident. His reformist drive has left the opposite group with no legitimate issues to use in their election campaign. Much will revolve around current issues and administration people say there are little problems here and there, but nobody bothers about them because the present dispensation is addressing all the pressing concerns. On the other hand, by embarking on a fair, honest and clean campaign, UNA’s Tatak Binay drumbeaters should be able to improve the voters’ perception of the team – especially among the reluctant voters. The goal is to ensure the party doesn’t lag behind in the campaign sorties. And in order to be credible, they have to be different – a strategy that has also been a proven vote-getter among voters during elections. On most issues including social problems, corruption and the domestic economy, the two contending parties aren’t far apart. The country’s socio-economic and political security can be assured by continuing President PNoy’s policies and to realize that vision is to vote straight for LP’s senate slate. Meanwhile by demonstrating how unpredictable and reassuring Binay’s leadership prowess is, may have been given UNA a boost with voters. Certainly their hard-line stance resonates with unenthusiastic voters, who still remember the litanies of unfulfilled political promises.
Improving the voters’ perception
NECESSARY PUSH-PULL BETWEEN LP AND UNA – Kingpins of the Liberal Party (LP) and United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), perhaps accidentally, gave the wary voters an inside glimpse of the heat of the senatorial race during their respective proclamation rallies held on the same date and day and in separate venues. President Benigno Aquino III and Team PNoy started their campaign salvo in Metro Manila while Vice President Jejomar Binay and his Tatak Binay group invaded vote-rich Cebu City. Unexpectedly the two top political honchos made scathing and bitter side comments indirectly aimed at each other and their respective teams. The campaign, a traditional political ritual, has already started with UNA leaders calling for fair, honest and clean campaign despite exchange of barbs while Team PNoy frontrunners say they should figure out their own positions on the prevailing campaign issues first. As the senatorial campaign goes full swing and lurches into fast forward, here’s what to watch for: What will happen to the dominant political parties the voters had been waiting and heard for months? The fiasco over the three common senatorial candidates was just the latest in a string of miscues. The threesome namely Chiz Escudero, Loren Legarda and Grace Poe joined Team PNoy during LP’s proclamation rally while Tatak Binay’s UNA insist that the three should likewise join the group during campaign sorties. But their failure to attend UNA’s proclamation rally and campaign blitz prompted the party leadership to issue an ultimatum asking them to explain why they ignored the prior agreement otherwise their names will be deleted from the team’s senate slate. It seemed the longer UNA waits for

Requiem to a Gun-less Warrior ( 1st of two parts ) PERSONAL ESSAY: JOWEL CANUDAY/MINDANEWS
O
XFORD, England--“At the age of eight, I witnessed a massacre which I barely escaped from and where we lost three uncles and an aunt. Vividly, I could still recall the smoking end of that armalite barrel that was pointed at me in that fateful Friday afternoon of March 16, 1984. To this day I still do not know why my life was spared, but all I know is that a part of me was killed on that day.” Alber Husin, a fellow anthropologist and development worker, wrote the passage above for a thesis that seeks to know the political and socio-cultural dynamics behind gun violence that troubled his ancestral community in Sulu for generations. Nearly twenty-eight years later on Valentine’s Day, he himself would fall from an assailant’s bullet. This passage that Alber wrote in his “Kalis and Armalite: Symbols of Weapons and Meanings of Violence in Tausug Society” left us sleepless and listless in a house on Apitong Street at Green Meadows in Davao where we both shared a home while writing our respective thesis for our masters. Soon after writing the passage, Alber dropped his keyboard, went out of his room, and paced around the little space our small and cluttered living area offered. In deeply personal terms, he shared that all his life he tried mighty hard not to recount the details of that horrid day but the demands of scholarship compelled him to set them down into prose. He hoped that doing so would help him understand the events of March 16 and many other murders that his and other families in Sulu had to contend with. Alber went on writing: “Experiences like these are not normal, not easy to recount or even to forget. If it were only possible, I would have long erased them from my memory. The simple and happy life that I had opened my eyes to as a child was forever gone. We had to arm ourselves as if we were back to where it all began. By the age of twelve, I was already given my first gun and was soon exposed to a variety of weapons that I believed were not common among typical non-Tausug households in our community.” Alber stood for the right of his family and community to bear arms as the means of seeking redress under a condition where the wheels of justice grind painfully slow, if at all. He had come to believe of the necessity of guns in a socio-political environment where state authorities utterly failed in reigning gun violence and protecting powerless communities. He would write: “Arms in relation to prevention of greater violence can bring about peace.” But then, he also raised inconvenient questions: “Were we in any way different from that person who murdered my uncles and aunt? Is it wrong to have guns that could take life, but in the process protect life as well? What are the common experiences among us Tausug that could explain our need to have weapons? Are we violent?”

MICHAEL JORDAN
At 50
Some strange facts you don’t know M
ICHAEL Jordan, considered by many basketball experts as the world’s greatest player, is turning 50 years old today (February 17). As MJ turns 50, MJ fanatics around the world would be surprised to find some strange facts about MJ23 which were not made public. Michael was not really cut from his high school team contrary to the MJ biography. And yes, he asked the exclusion of Isiah Thomas from the Dream Team. Here are some of the things Jordanatics should know. 1. What was Jordan’s childhood nickname? Growing up, Jordan was called “black cat” by other kids; it was a name that hurt him deeply. The Air Jordan III was patterned after a black panther’s paw, and like so much else in his life, Jordan used the pain as motivation. The third generation of Air Jordans kicked the brand into a higher gear, paving the way for the brand’s contin-
ued iconic status. 2. Why did Jordan briefly wear #45? Few athletes get to see their numbers retired by their team, and even fewer return to play once that jersey’s been hoisted to the rafters. When Jordan returned to the NBA in the 1994-95 season (with a two-word release: “I’m back”) he wore #45, the number he’d worn as a member of the Birmingham Barons, rather than his trademark #23. Jordan had originally worn #23 in high school because it was roughly half of 45, the number his older brother Larry wore, and he’d later worn the 45 his senior year of baseball. By the 1995-96 season, Jordan had switched back to #23. 3. Did Jordan wear any other number during his NBA career? For one game, Jordan wore #12. The story is this: on Valentine’s Day 1990, someone stole Jordan’s #23 jersey out of the Bulls’ locker room in Orlando. Jordan tried on
a kid’s replica jersey, but it didn’t fit. Instead, he wore a nameless #12 jersey. 4. What name did Jordan use while in hotels on the road? Players rarely use their own names in hotels; you don’t want to get a call from a home-team fan at 4am the night before a game. Jordan would use the name “Leroy Smith,” who was a childhood friend. Not coincidentally, Smith was the player who got the last varsity roster spot denied Jordan in high school. Again … pain as motivation. 5. What did Jordan do in his first at-bat as a professional baseball player? Jordan’s 1994 departure to play baseball still ranks as one of the strangest turns in sports history. The most famous athlete on the planet playing minor-league baseball? It made absolutely no sense. What made perfect sense, though, was that Jordan would have trouble switching to another sport. In his first at-bat for the Bir-
mingham Barons, Jordan flew out; he would go 0-3 that game. He’d finish the season with a .202 average and three home runs over 127 games. 6. Are there really incorrectly-numbered Jordan statues all over the world? Indeed there are, a tidbit Ball Don’t Lie brought to light several years ago. For some reason, there are various statues all around the world sporting a Bulls jersey but an incorrect “32” number. (Unlike 45 and 12, Jordan never wore this one.) There’s one that’s shown up on Jimmy Kimmel’s show, another in Dubai, another in Scotland, and in Texas. Why do these misnumbered Jordan statues even exist? That’s a separate question, and one which we don’t know, so we didn’t ask it above. 7. Did Jordan really have a “love of the game” clause in his contract? He did. Most athletes are forbidden from pursuing any activities which could potentially injure them, and that
includes recreational basketball games. But Jordan overrode that by getting a clause in his contract allowing him to play anyone, anywhere, anytime. More recently, Kevin Durant has been following in Jordan’s Air Jordans, but most basketball players can’t get anywhere near a rec game without violating their contract. 8. What’s Jordan’s golf handicap? Like most of his other non-basketball endeavors, Jordan is better than you’d expect but not as good as he thinks he is. He plays to a handicap of 4, which puts him among the better players at your local course but still light-years from even the worst professional golfers. Thankfully for all of us, Jordan didn’t ever try to follow in the embarrassing footsteps of Jerry Rice and play in a professional golf tournament. But he remains a presence in the golf world, most notably as vice-captain on Fred Couples’ 2009 Presidents Cup international-competition
team. Yes, this happened. 9. What was Jordan’s pregame meal of choice? It would horrify 21st-century nutritionists, but Jordan’s pregame meal was a steak cooked medium, a baked potato, a green salad and water or ginger ale. Seemed to work well enough. 10. Was Jordan really on an ‘80s hip-hop song? This one is truly terrifying: Jordan appearing on “Everybody Use Your Imagination,” a song by the justifiably-forgotten ‘80s hip-hop girl group Hot Butterfly. Put it this way: Hot Butterfly was the Harold Miner to Saltn-Pepa’s Michael Jordan. On the 1987 song, MJ does a spoken-word intro and outro, and the four ladies of Hot Butterfly sport Jordan-branded gear. We’d ask how something featuring the imprimatur of the world’s best-known athlete could vanish without a trace, but we think you can figure it out for yourself.

Tagle’s chance, however, was described by authors David Gibson and Alessandro Speciale as “outsider’s chance.” The report further said about Tagle: “Still, his relative youth, and his brief experience as the head of a major diocese (he was appointed to Manila in 2011), will probably make him an outsider in this conclave.” The Catholic Church in the Philippines was caught by surprise after Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation recently. Tagle himself was shocked by the news. “Pope Benedict XVI’s renunciation of the ministry as Bishop of Rome on February 11, 2013 came as a surprise,” Tagle said
in a statement. “The announcement also brought sadness to us. We felt like children clinging to a father who bids them farewell,” he said, praising Benedict’s “humility, honesty, courage and sincerity”. Pope Benedict’s resignation likewise kept hopes burning for an “outsider” to become Pope. Filipinos took to social media to support the appointment of a new Pope from the non-traditional Catholic countries. Father Francis Lucas of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said a Filipino pope would be like “a dream”. “He is humble, he’s meek, he’s simple, he’s spiritual, he’s media savvy, he’s very bright.”

Pyroclave... FFROM 2 safe and disposable charcoal. Through this process, disinfection, carbonization and decomposition can be accomplished. Pyroclave is a combination of Pyrolisis and autoclave. Pyrolisis is a decomposition process without the presence of oxygen to heat up matter. With this, the material will just decompose and will not burn, unlike in incineration. Autoclave, as described in the hospitals, is a disinfecting process using steam. This will produce water waste. However, with Pyroclave, there will be no waste water as waste will be heated just enough to dry. Treating infectious medical waste is very important because, as Dayot said, infectious waste can trigger the spread of diseases, citing an example, “Did you know that hepatitis B can live outside the body for 17 days and other bacterial viruses can live for 5?” The company that created Pyroclave, RAD Green Solutions, presented its innovation in Silicon Valley, California after being one
of the winners in the ON3 Pitching Competitions in 2011 which is a business competition for start-up companies involved in Information Technology (I.T.) and green technology. According to Dayot, while in California, they said, “You have something that we need” which gave us the chance to go global, our dream, considering the fact that our company is only three years old.” RAD Green Technology is focusing on establishing an offsite facility which will serve as a centralized facility to serve all the hospitals in Davao City. This first offsite facility is located in New Carmen, Magtuod right in front of the dump site. The opening of this facility is on February 21 where a demonstration will also be done. The company will collect the infectious waste for delivery to, and treatment, in the offsite facility. There is already an onsite facility of the Pyroclave technology at the San Pedro Hospital. The machine was placed there for free, but RAD Green Solutions
will retain ownership of the machine. The machine is placed at the hospital provided that the hospital can produce 300 kilos of infectious waste a day for treatment. Actually, it produces 360 kilos a day. The RAD charges P20 per kilo of infectious waste treated. The second offsite facility will be in Cagayan de Oro on February 23, the third will be in Bulacan in March, and RAD Green Solutions is eyeing five more offsite facilities in Metro Manila and Bali, Indoneisa within 2013. Pyroclave is already patented in the United States of America, Philippines and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). It was also approved by the Department of Health, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and is certified by SGS International. To protect their ownership of the technology, Dayot also clarified their business model saying, “We are not selling the technology itself, we will manufacture and operate it ourselves.”

Oh my Josh! By Kenneth Irving Ong
RAW TALENT and dashing good looks that make the girls swoon, these must be the two biggest assets model and violin virtuoso Josh Kua has that is making him one of South-East Asia’s rising internet sensation. Chinese-Malaysian Josh (who is oftentimes mistaken to be Korean by Pinoy fans) was born in Kuala Lumpur and raised in Melbourne, Australia. Josh, a law student, is already a regular when it comes to the world of advertising in Malaysia, having scored ads for Coca-cola, and Maggi to name a few, but
not wanting to rest on his laurels, Josh intends to pursue his passion in music, playing the violin which he has been playing since he was six years old. Having already performed to crowds and charity events in Melbourne and Malaysia, Josh finally arrived in the Philippines and did a suc-
cessful performance at SM Lanang Premier just a day after Valentines. He started off with a slow, cover of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, followed by every twihard fan’s favourite A Thousand Years. Each song literally made the audience melt and fall in love. Of course there were energetic pieces too ending in an energetic rendition of Vivaldi’s Storm which literally put the fan girls at the edge of their seats. A fitting song since Josh Kua is definitely taking the Philippines by Storm.

Sun Cellular now offers Samsung gadgets under its SunDroid Rush bundle FOLLOWING its groundbreaking release of the first-in-themarket Android tablet and smartphone bundle last year, Sun Cellular has recently announced the offering of Samsung gadgets under its renowned “SunDroid Rush” postpaid offering. This new addition to the SunDroid Rush line features the gadget bundle of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 WiFi and a Samsung Galaxy Y smartphone under the Sun Plan 999 with unlimited mobile internet and Sun texts and four hours of Sun calls. “We’re happy to welcome the year with this powerful and exciting addition to our line of bundled offerings, as Samsung has finally jumped in and joined us for the SunDroid Rush bandwagon,” says Ricky Peña, Sun Cellular’s Senior Vice President for Postpaid Marketing, Broadband, and New Business. “Now, we are looking at reaching out to even more gadget fans with the promise of a best-value carrier support not just for the leading gadget technology of Samsung, but also for the Android Operating System that we all love,” he adds. Boasting notable connectivity features, including those for internet sharing and WiFi service, Peña said that this SunDroid bundle has been designed to perfectly suit today’s dynamic users of both 2G and 3G communication technologies. “We have reached the most exciting times where one has got to have not just one but multiple or hardworking gadgets – for calling and texting, on-the-go internet surfing and social networking,” he explains. “This new Samsung SunDroid Rush bundle will aim to answer all these needs.” At the onset of the New Year, Sun executives have revealed that the network will continue reinventing its signature ‘unlimited’ services with the introduction of more innovative bundles and value-for-money gadget offerings. After completing its large-scale network expansion last year, Sun Cellular has also been said to be at its strongest stance yet to provisioning superior quality mobile services across the country. Gerard Butler suing Motor City producers for $5.1 million MOVIE or no movie, Gerard Butler wants what he claims is his promised payout. The star, who is considered “one of the most sought after and bankable actors in Hollywood,” filed a lawsuit against the producers from the film Motor City for breach of contract after cancelling his movie and failing to pay him $4 million, according to the complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court this month. Butler and Comrie Inc., a management company, are suing Randall Emmett and George Furla’s Emmett/Furla Films after Butler agreed to be the lead actor for revenge thriller, where he was offered a fixed guaranteed compensation of $4 million. The actor said that because he agreed to do the movie, he gave up accepting other offers, and even though shooting was scheduled to start
in mid-September, Butler says he was informed Aug. 31, “on the eve of commencement of principal photography,” that there was no more movie and no intention to pay him. The lawsuit states, “Butler has suffered and continues to suffer damages in an amount to be proven at trial, but not less then $5,100,000.” Meanwhile, Rick Rosenthal, an attorney for Emmett/Furla, says that the company never signed a contract with Butler and described the suit as “frivolous.” “There is no written agreement between the parties and
there were still outstanding deal points that were material to the deal that were not agreed upon,” Rosenthal told TheWrap. “Everybody wishes the movie had gone forward, but they do not have any legal liability.”
