IDEWALK vendors in Davao City who continuously defy the strict order of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte for them to occupy only one-third, not the entire width of sidewalks, are now hurting from the daily raids and confiscation of their merchandise by the city demolition team. This was bared by retired Col. Yusop Jimlani, head of the team, who reported that there is no letup in the team’s daily raids and seizure of the vendors’ goods even
during the recent holidays. Jimlani told mediamen covering the weekly Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao annex yesterday that the demolition team continued to implement the mayor’s order to stop the illegal occupancy of the sidewalk vendors even on November 1, 2 and 3. Jimlani said that the vendors went to the extent of occupying portions of the frontage of the city hall building in further defiance of Mayor Duterte’s directive and
its implementation by the demolition team. The retired Army colonel, who had been decorated for putting order in the old barter trade center in Zamboanga City during the time of the late President Corazon C. Aquino, said that a group of vendors was shouting “Jihad!” and “Alahu Akbar” while the demolition team was clearing the area. AvAo City vice Mayor Paulo yesterday hailed what he said was a “generally peaceful” observance of the All Saints’/All Souls’ Day on November 1 and 2. However, he noted that based on the record the number of houses ransacked had spiked three-fold, according to the Davao City Police office (DCPo). Duterte, acting as city mayor in the absence of his father who is abroad, said no major crime was reported, although not denying there were houses ransacked by unidentified persons.
Pulong to keep hands off ABC presidency polls
v
ICE Mayor Paulo “Pulong” Duterte, who is the acting Davao City mayor while Mayor Rody Duterte is out of the country, says that he will keep his hands off the issue of who the elected barangay captains will choose among them the next Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president. Some former councilors were elected barangay captains in the october 28 barangay elections. “Ang kapitan ra dyud ang makadesisyon ana, dili ko mag-apil-apil kay katong panahon naku wala man pud Duterte nag-apil-apil. ang mga kapitan ra may nagtuboy sa akoa, so karon dili ko maapil-apil,” Paolo explained. He said that he has own bet who is fit for the position that he believes can help improve development of barangays but
he will let the barangay captains decide who that would be. The elected president of the ABC will by operation of law become a member of the city council. Duterte said he would also keep his hands off any move to have his wife, January Duterte, elected president of the ABC. She ias the newly elected barangay captain of Catalunan Grande. The former councilors who were elected barangay captains are Wilberto E. Al-ag of Bangkas Heights in the 3rd district; Angela “Angging” Librado-Trinidad of Matina Crossing in the 1st district; Arnolfo Ricardo B. Cabling of Ilang, and Dante L. Apostol of Panacan, both in the 2nd district. Duterte said that he would still visit barangays where his alliances failed to win in the ba-
Heights. Trinidad and Cabling expressed their readiness to serve as councilor again in text messages they sent to this reporter and Edge Davao editor Antonio M. Ajero. They responded the Edge Davao’s query about their reacting to talks that there are four former city councilors who have been elected barangay captains last october 28, and that some of them are being considered possible
candidates for president of the ABC. Under the law, the ABC president will become a member of the sanggunian. “Every barangay captain is qualified, and since I was elected BC of Matina Crossing, that makes me qualified, too,” Trinidad stated. “I will defer to the wisdom of my fellow BCs in choosing who will best represent them and the barangays of Davao City,” she said.
“Dili nimu mabasol ang pulis kay dili na malupok ug bantay,” he said. He explained that owners of houses should be liable for the security of their property and must not be complacent. “Gibiyaan nila ang ilang balay ug gipapauli ang ilang helper naniid lang baya ng kawatan,” Duterte said. He also said that when he was a barangay captain there were also reports of ransacked houses in his barangay. The DCPo tallied 12 ransacking cases on Nov.

15-minute switching power interruptions on Nov. 5, 10
C
USToMERS in the southern part of Davao Light and Power Co. franchise will experience two 15-minute switching power interruptions on Nov. 5 and 10, from 7:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and from 6:00 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., respectively. Communication officer Ross Luga said that the scheduled outages are necessary to facilitate the AboitizPower’s connection of its Tudaya 2 Hydro power plant to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ 69 kv line affecting Davao Light’s Davao line. This will affect cus-
tomers situated from Flying v Gas Station in Bago Aplaya and from Casas Store in Bago Gallera up to the entire Toril area. Also affected are some Davao City Water District’s pumping stations located in the above mentioned areas. Davao Light apologizes for the inconvenience of these scheduled power interruptions. But, it will exert all efforts to restore electric service as scheduled or earlier. However, there may be instances where restoration may extend beyond the schedule due to unavoidable circumstances.

ToRM signal No. 1 was hoisted in nine Mindanao provinces as tropical depression “Wilma,” as of 10 a.m. Monday, was spotted 75 kilometers north northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, the state weather forecaster said. “Wilma has maintained its strength as it continues to move westward towards Caraga region,” the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11 a.m. advisory. It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometer per hour (kph) near the center and moving west at 19 kph, PAGASA said. Placed under storm signal No. 1 were Dinagat Island, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Misamis oriental, Misamis occidental Camiguin Island, and northern part of Zam-
boanga Del Norte. Siargao Island, a part of Surigao del Norte, was also placed under storm signal No. 1, under which 30-60 kph winds may be expected within the next 36 hours, Pagasa said. In the visayas, storm signal No. 1 was hoisted over the southern part of Negros occidental, southern part of Negros oriental, southern Cebu, Siquijor, Bohol and Southern Leyte Estimated rainfall amount is from 10.0 - 25.0 mm per hour (heavy - intense) within the 300 km diameter of the tropical depression. PAGASA warned that flashfloods and landslides may occur in areas under storm signal No. 1. Wilma was expected to be 440 km west of Puerto Princesa City or outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday. (MindaNews)

Public warned against hike in dengue cases A
N official of the Department of Health (DoH) in Davao Region urged the public to continue to be vigilant against dengue-carrying mosquitoes as their monitoring showed sustained increase in dengue cases in Davao City as of october 30, 2013. Speaking at the Kapehan sa SM City, Divine Hilario, information and education officer of the DoH 11 said a total of 9,593 cases with 60 deaths had been attributed to dengue as of october this year, higher by 1,181 cases but lower by 30 deaths compared to the
same period in 2012, with 8,412 cases and 90 deaths. She said the DoH surveillance unit acquired the data from the different sentinel hospitals where these cases were attended. “This year’s cases may be more but the number of deaths declined. We are glad that the mortality rate is lower despite the increase in number of cases,” Hilario said. Hilario stressed there is no let up in informing the public, particularly on the precautionary measures to prevent dengue. She attributed the lower mortality rate to the infor-
mation drive warning the public on the ways to prevent the disease. Hilario said the Health Department aims to reduce the number of fatalities due to dengue before the year ends despite the occurrence of heavy downpour and floods. She said most cases were monitored in Buhangin District with 1,002 and seven deaths, followed by Talomo South and North with 971 and five deaths and 733 with three deaths, respectively. Hilario said Agdao District also registered 535 cases with zero fatality,

followed by District B with 344 cases and one death, Bunawan with 314 cases and three deaths, and Calinan with 300 cases and four deaths. She urged the public to be wary of water-borne diseases brought about by flooding like Leptospirosis. Hilario said six cases of Leptospirosis were monitored since october 2013. “Avoid wading in floodwaters and wear boots once you need to immerse to avoid infection,” she pointed out. T was reported that 4,977 families were displaced in three districts of Davao City by raging floodwaters last october 31. The report came from the City Social Services and Development office (CSSDo). The three districts were Buhangin, Agdao and Bunawan where some parts were submerged by floodwaters after a heavy downpour brought about by the inter-tropical convergence zone. The evacuees were temporarily housed in barangay halls and covered courts. vice Mayor Paulo “Pulong” Duterte said areas affected in San Antonio, Panacan were those located in the lower ground level that even a big drainage system could not guarantee no
flooding incidents. Duterte is mulling to include the drainage budget system in Ecoland in next year’s budget as this is the road going to Matina that causes traffic congestion during floods. “Mali man gud ang paka-design aning atong drainage system, gamay kayo pero hinay-hinayon nato ne,” he said. Duterte also asked the City Health office (CHo) to check the health status of the affected persons and police personnel to secure them inside the evacuation site. He said people should not blame the government for flooded areas, but partly climate change. Duterte urged affected barangays to initiate the cleaning up of debris left by the flood.

CCTV may track GenSan bomb suspects
A
UTHoRITIES are hoping to track the suspects who left a powerful bomb Sunday night at a gasoline station here with the help of footages caught by a closed-circuit television camera, a police official said on Monday. Senior Supt. Froilan Quidilla, city police chief, also declined to speculate on the motive behind the foiled bomb attack as investigation is still on going. Quidilla said the Police Regional Office 12’s crime laboratory unit is now evaluating the makeup of the recovered explosive. “They’re specifically determining whether its makeup was similar to the bomb that previously exploded in Cagayan de oro City,” he said. Last July, at least eight persons and 28 others were wounded in an explosion at the Limketkai Rosario Arcade. Many of the victims were physicians and medical representatives who attended the midyear convention of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians. Quidilla said bomb experts safely defused the improvised bomb found near the fuel dispenser of Petron gas station along Pedro Acharon Boulevard here at around 7:50 p.m. Sunday.
He said the bomb, which was placed in a plastic bag, was made up of two live 60 mm mortar shells, electrical wires, a blasting cord and a mobile phone that serves as its triggering device. “It’s fortunate that it was recovered early and immediately disrupted by our EoD (explosives and ordnance disposal) team,” Quidilla said. Petrol pump attendant Joseph Pelaez told reporters that he initially noticed a white plastic bag that was left near one of their fuel dispensers. He said they previously noticed two unidentified persons coming towards the fuel dispenser but separately left after a while. “I noticed some protruding electrical wires when I checked the plastic bag so I called the attention of our security guard,” Pelaez said. Duty guard Aaron Mercado said he immediately noticed the bomb-like components inside the plastic bag so he carried it away from the fuel dispenser. “It was quite heavy, probably around two kilos,” he said. After placing it in a nearby pathway, the security guard hastily left the area and reported the matter to

HE city government is planning to develop a 2.4-hectare resettlement area for local residents situated in calamity danger zones and those who were displaced by the recent floods and landslides that hit the area. Mayor Peter Miguel said he has commissioned a team composed of city government personnel to identify and assess the potential sites within the city for the proposed resettlement project, which would be developed by next year.
North Cotabato
The mayor said the team, which includes local environmental planners, is presently studying several areas that it initially found viable for the project. He said the team’s recommendation will serve as basis for the acquisition or purchase later on of the relocation site. “The evaluation process is quite tedious as we want to have a relocation area that is free from possible disasters like floods and landslides,” Miguel said in a radio interview.
The mayor said the project’s target beneficiaries are residents who are settled in identified flood and landslide-prone areas. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Mines and Geosciences Bureau had identified communities situated along the banks of the area’s major waterways — Marbel River and Bulok Creek — as prone to heavy flooding. Upland areas in portions of barangays Saravia and Assumption
were also identified by the agency as prone to landslides. In July, eight villages in the city that are traversed by Marbel River and Bulok Creek were swept by flashfloods due to the swelling of the two waterways following hours of heavy rains. Last week, around a dozen houses were damaged after flashfloods ravaged portions of barangays Zone III and Paraiso. (MindaNews)

Kadatuan noted that the barangay election was set on Friday to give enough time in training the police officers as BETs and to secure a clean and honest poll. The barangays which will undergo election include: Bagoinged, Gocotan; Balong; Barongis; Balongis; Balabac; Bulol; Talitay; Raja Muda; Bualan; and Buliok. Meanwhile, Kadatuan
noted that their office has relieved Pikit election officer Joel Celis because of pending investigation due to violation of the omnibus Election Code. This was after 51 clustered precincts in the 12 barangays failed to conduct election because BETs conducted the october 28 barangay poll to Pikit Central Elementary School alone instead of conducting it in the 12 barangays of the town. Moreover, the move
had no direct notice from the Comelec Central office. on the other hand, Comelec central office has first rejected BETs petition of transferring the polling centers of the 12 barangays to the said school. According to Kadatuan, further investigation is on-going to clarify the issue. As of now, Comelec considers whether to file charges on the BETs or not. (SJDuerme-PIA12/ RBeñez-DXVL)

EPLETE with songs and dances showcasing the Madayan culture and tradition, the recent celebration of the Kalindugan Festival in Sangab, Caraga, Davao oriental has brought Dabawenyos a sense of pride and identity over their deep-rooted cultural heritage. Marking its 15th Anniversary this year, the Kalindugan Festival featured a two-day celebration supplied with extravagant parades, authentic Mandayan dances, colors, and songs, making it one of the most venerable and well-known festivals in the province. Highlighted during the festival were theatrical presentations of the Mandayan culture. Among the portrayed performances were the history of Sangab, the Mandayan courtship and marriage, the justice system and the origins of the intricacies of the ‘Dagmay’. Considered an authentic cultural community, Sangab is one of the few locations in Davao oriental and in Mindanao where descendants of the
old Mandayan Tribe has preserved their ancestors’ culture keeping the Mandayan spirit alive. A full-blooded Mandaya herself, Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon congratulated the community headed by the local tribal chieftain and community elders for their efforts in preserving the culture and tradition of the Lumads while encouraging the locals to continuously strengthen their sense of identity amidst the present culturally-diverse society. She said that this festival is not merely a celebration of culture and traditions but also to remind the people of their roots which are a great legacy from their ancestors. “As progenies of this rich culture, we are ought to promote, protect and preserve its glory,” said Gov. Malanyaon. Meanwhile she also urged the local community to help the provincial government in its effort to protect the environment, noting that the ancestral territories and the forests surrounding them should be remain protected. Government asks group to reconsider demand for tax holiday, Palace says
T
HE Aquino government called on business, civil society and workers groups to reconsider their position for a three-month tax holiday following the alleged misuse of the Priority Development Assistance Fund, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said. Coloma issued the statement after various groups joined the “Million People March” advocates to demand for a three-month tax holiday not only to business firms but also to ordinary workers due to pork barrel controversy.
The tax system in the Philippines appears to be sound, said Coloma, adding that the current system serves to encourage even greater interest and investments in our country. "Ang pangalawa pong konsiderasyon ay ito: Ang Pilipinas po ay meron nang isa sa mababang antas ng taxation as a percentage of GDP. Kung ihahambing sa kabuuan ng ating gross domestic product, maihahanay tayo doon sa mga bansang mababa ang porsyento o bahagdan ng GDP na accounted for by income taxes," Coloma said. "Kaya mas mainam siguro na mapataas pa natin ang income tax collection

182-day bond rate drops to record-low Peso ends sideways vs. US$
R
ATE of the 182day Treasury bill fell to its record-low of 0.001 percent Monday, same as that of the 91-day paper on suspected speculations for peso strengthening. The six-month paper’s average rate during the auction on october 7, 2013 stood at 0.090 percent. The paper was offered for P6 billion, and awarded at this level, but total tenders were more than threefolds at P24.783 billion. National Treasurer Rosalia de Leon told reporters after the auction that bulk of the bids for the six-month paper were mostly offshore investments. “They’re just there because of their view that the peso will ap-
preciate, so it’s more of a currency play,” she said. De Leon said they have observed “significant” foreign inflows that are being invested in government securities (GS) over the equities market. She explained that foreign investors are not focusing on the tenor that they are investing into in the Philippines due in part to the government’s strong fiscal position, which is partly boosted by the continued improvement in revenue collection. Relatively, rate of the three-month paper remained at 0.001 percent, same as the previous auction’s level. The Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) offered it for P4 billion and
awarded at that level even as bids were nearly 15 times at P59.16 billion. on the other hand, rate of the one-year paper slightly rose to 0.278 percent from 0.19 percent in the previous auction. It was offered for P10 billion but tenders fell short after it only amounted to P8.10 billion. The auction committee awarded P7.40 billion. (PNA) Meanwhile, De Leon discounted the issuance of inflation-linked bond this year but this paper remains an option as among the government’s debt paper. “We have to get the approval of regulators and at the same time the trading and logistics,” she added. (PNA)
R
EMITTANCE inflows countered the strong dollar Monday resulting to the sideways close of the local unit against the greenback. The peso ended at 43.30 at the start of this week’s trading, P0.9 weaker than the 43.21 close on october 31, 2013. There was no trading last Friday due to the commemoration of All Saint’s Day. A trader said the US currency was generally strong across the region boosted by the fastest rise in more than two years of US’ manufacturing sector last october. The Institute of Supply Management (ISM) reported that the manufacturing sector of the world’s largest economy grew by 56.4 percent last
october amid the partial government shutdown in the first half of that month. This made investors a little bullish on the growth of the US economy in the last quarter of this year amid the expected slowdown given the impact of the shutdown. As a result of this positive US data, the peso started the day weaker at 43.33 from 43.17 in the previous trading. It strengthened to 43.27 but dipped to 43.37 bringing the average for the day at 43.31. volume of trade reached US$ 702.3 million, slightly lower than the US$ 756.8 million. For Tuesday, the peso is expected to trade between 43.20 and 43.40. (PNA)

IT fosters health innovations
P
oLICY makers should employ information technology (IT) to drive innovation in the country’s health sector and make health care more accessible and affordable to Filipinos. An expert from the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) noted that there has been very poor adoption of existing IT assets in the Philippines when it comes to health, compared with other Asian
countries. The innovative use of IT was among the topics highlighted during the observance in September of the 11th Development Policy Research Month (DPRM), which had the theme “Making Health More Inclusive in a Growing Economy”. PIDS Senior Health Research Consultant oscar Picazo lamented the lack of IT in health care service delivery in the country despite being the outsourcing capital of the
world. “There is IT innovation in India that benefits millions of poor people in rural places in the delivery of health services,” Picazo said. For instance, poor patients in rural places in India receive medical prescriptions from physicians in Bangalore using computer laptops. Picazo also highlighted the use of teleradiology in India, which relies on outsourcing services to interpret radiological
patient images such as x-rays, computed tomography scans (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Teleradiology is applicable to the Philippines as it allows effective transmission of radiological patient images from city hospitals to rural hospitals, he said. It will also minimize barriers of distance or location when it comes to health service delivery. The Department of Health (DoH) already has a number of sys-
tems in place, however, said Dr. Irma Asuncion, director of the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control. “The Department of Health has decided to put up the Maternal and Neonatal Death Reporting System (MNDRS), the Unified Non-Communicable Disease Registry System, and the online National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (oNEISS),” she said during the DPRM press conference last Septem-
ber. “The facility systems will allow DoH to have accurate data of mortality rates, especially on maternal and neonatal death cases,” she explained. Telemedicine is present in the country and the DoH targets to expand it by 2014, Asunsion said. “A total of 389 rural health units are actually involved in telemedicine and hopefully we will expand it by 2014 to 450 RHUs,” she added.
lished this program in 2010.
In June 2010, DENR issued Department Administrative order (DAo) 201016 establishing AAWS to strengthen public-private partnership on in-site biodiversity conservation so specie extinction can be prevented. AAWS covers all terrestrial and wetland areas nationwide as well as wildlife species under DENR’s jurisdiction. ”Any private entity or individual able to provide financial resources for either supporting or directly implementing a wildlife conservation project can join AAWS,” said Tagtag. DAo 2010-16 lists 21
insects, 53 amphibians, 27 reptiles, 137 birds, 85 mammals and 873 plants as priorities for conservation under AAWS. A number of such fauna and flora species are either critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable or near-threatened, DENR said. ”The private sector may adopt non-threatened species upon DENR’s approval,” Tagtag clarified. He said government recognizes private sector conservation efforts under AAWS through tax incentives prescribed in RA 9147 (Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protec-
tion Act of 2001). RA 9147’s Sec. 34 provides that “any donation, contribution, bequest, subsidy or financial aid which may be made to DENR or to the Department of Agriculture (DA) and to NGos engaged in wildlife conservation duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as certified by the LGU, DENR or DA, for the conservationand protection of wildlife resources and their habitats shall constitute as an allowable deduction from the taxable income of the donor and shall be exempt from donor's tax.” (PNA)
Gov’t seeks more private wildlife conservation partners P
RoTECTED Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) is urging the private sector to increasingly help conserve wildlife species in biodiversity hotspot Philippines and gain tax incentives for doing so. PAWB ecosystems management specialist and Philippine Raptors Conservation Program project leader Anson Tagtag said the private sector can undertake such tax-perked mission by joining this agency’s Adopta-Wildlife-Species (AAWS) Program. ”Biodiversity conservation must be a collective effort of society,” he said.
He noted the Philippines is mega-diverse with over 20,000 plants and animals endemic to the country but habitat destruction, unsustainable resource use, poaching and the illegal wildlife trade as well as pollution and onslaught of invasive alien species that are putting biodiversity nationwide in peril. Tagtag said so far, only cement giant Cemex and geothermal power leader Energy Development Corporation (EDC) joined AAWS since PAWB’s mother agency Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) estab-
Government needs more private partners as it lacks resources to solely undertake biodiversity conservation and protection nationwide, Tagtag said. The country has over 220 faunal and 600 floral species facing possible extinction but less than 10 of these – including the critically endangered ‘tamaraw’ - have their own government conservation programs, he noted. ”We therefore came up with AAWS to encourage private sector support for biodiversity conservation,” he said.

Sex and politics
oLITICS and sex are no strange bedfellows. Many of us who were not born yesterday are witnesses to or at least have heard about some salacious affairs between politicians and lovers. We also know for a fact that in most instances it does not need ancient alchemy for such amorous dalliances to result in scandals that our society, the sometimes natural rumormongers and voyeurs that we are, can only relish with gusto. We are afraid this might be the hellhole that Barangay Captain Robert olanolan of Bucana, a.k.a. Barangay 76, is in. After losing his post in the recent elections, olanolan, who has enjoyed a reputation of a lady killer (“chick boy,” some call it), is facing four charges related to the accusation that he had engineered the circulation during the election campaign of a lewd photo showing a lady in a sexually compromising situation with a male reproductive organ. olanolan has repeatedly denied the charge. The lady turned out to be “Lily,” said to be a divorcee who alleged she once had an affair

with the embattled barangay leader and bore a child by him, after the divorce. It looks like Lily and Robert had a falling out, an estrangement ( lovers’ quarrel, if you please) that metamorphosed into a bitter political fight. The lady blamed the lewd photo for her loss as candidate for councilor in Barangay 10, where copies of the scurrilous picture was said to have been circulated. For disinterested Dabawenyos, this classic boy-girl quarrel is not irreconcilable. It may be viewed that the two who both lost in the october 28 elections are just victims of circumstance. Lily seems a nice lady. Robert is likeable, too, as he could not have been repeatedly elected leader of thousands in Bucana if he was an ogre. Also, so far, none of them denies they were once lovers. Likewise, we have heard no denial that they have a child. They can like each other again. However, if there is a third, or a fourth party involved, admittedly it will be a different matter altogether.

Impending economic growth
oo MUCH PoLITICS MAKE PEoPLE SICK – Some renowned political analysts argue that the fundamental failing of Philippine democracy lies in its wide-open, multi-party system, which seems likely to produce top leaders whom most Filipinos did not vote for. Another potent symbol of democratic failure – too much politics – has even worsen, and served as a cautionary example of what was wrong and inefficient with rambunctious freedom. For one thing, most of our politicians especially those who have nothing to offer except to criticize and find fault likewise have the penchant to talk about politics staccato-style in every twist and turn. In the finger-pointing and blame game over a tottering economy, slumping growth, slipping competitiveness, high unemployment rate and poor delivery of basic social services, the erosion of enriching values supposedly must rank high in the list of ultimate whys. Too much politics in our democratic nature hampered primarily the country’s economic growth. What directly contributed to the country’s boondoggles is the collective scarcity of prudence among politicians, lawmakers in particular. People wonder if civil servants got carried away by the praises heaped on them after being installed in office that they immediately announced ambitious initiatives, mostly reflecting the desire of their constituencies. Sad to say, though, it remained just that – mere lip service. A noble statesman once said that democracy was the worst form of government, except for all of the other kind. Plainly, the qualities required to get elected are not necessarily the ones needed to occupy a glorified seat in Congress. Majority of the members of both Houses of Congress have a few obvious qualifications for national office other than either a famous name or a member of influential political clans. I’m citing this
I
one glaring example: At the height of the startling revelation of the infamous multi-billion Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scandal, people would readily notice that some leading members of the legislature are seen mainly as effective political operators who further their personal interests, not necessarily the public’s. Public perceptions reflect the present predicament: poll surveys showed that more people than ever before are dissatisfied with some of our present crop of lawmakers the way they mishandled the taxpayers’ money amounting to several billions intended supposedly for priority development projects for the marginal sector. Such public concerns are understandable, especially in a society where the natural instincts of voters have been blunted by decades of life under “over-heated” politics. The country’s feverish political routine has a chilling effect on foreign investment and make government’s economic pledges unreliable. Hence, many civil servants could not but hew unscrupulously to illegal procedures in their money-making ventures by preying on hapless local investors. If there is one lesson Filipinos should learn from the ongoing crisis both big and small, a result of our elective officials’ protracted political infighting, it is one their politically-manipulated forebears knew painfully well: Things can go horribly wrong. And if you can hear some people say, “The Philippines is really a politically sick country,” it doesn’t
mean they were being unpatriotic. They were simply trying to draw attention to the dismal state of the country’s political structure. other elective officials are also not so pro-active. Many of them seemed to shrug off the unending political rigmarole among their peers saying that the situation is but just normal in a democratic society. Media queries to concerned officials about the continuous political conflict were always met with why-are-you-soconcerned response that the political situation is “all right today.” But what about tomorrow, it might be asked? If his administration is to be faulted, it is President Benigno Aquino III’s alleged less-than-sterling record against corruption and crime. Political experts feel he could have been tougher especially on thieves in government and the hoods. Although he works long hours, experts say President PNoy has yet to display more of his leadership prowess and managerial skill. But unlike his predecessors who have delivered little more than carefully choreographed appearances at selected events and bromides on the country’s “sound fundamentals,” the President meanwhile had been successful in his cordial, charm public approach. Despite skidding down few notches in a recent trust approval ratings, President PNoy still have done much to reassure, let alone inspire the public who have persistently given him a wide popular support. There are problems that are clearly beyond the government’s control, but it can certainly handle them in a manner that does not further shake public confidence. Maintaining a good image does not mean denying with a smile, that there are problems when crisis hit. It means acknowledging them, then offering appropriate solutions without much political fanfare.
A journalistic revolution
N theory, it was a great idea to upgrade our reporting and hoist it from the muck. But it came with a flaw. Fact and neutrality do not always cohabitate comfortably. In fact, they seldom do — especially in a highly-charged political environment. Facts have consequences, and they can undermine opinions that have no factual basis. That’s why some journalists ignore them in the first place. Climate change is a perfect example. You can say that humans aren’t responsible for climate change, as most conservatives do — but you would be factually wrong. You can say, again as many conservatives have, that obamacare is a gigantic failure. But you would again be factually wrong too, since it hasn’t been implemented yet. (This isn’t to say that it might not be a failure, only that there are no facts to support its being a failure now.) You could also say that the minimum wage costs jobs, but you would be factually wrong since most major economists have proven otherwise. As it turned out, it was a very short distance from so-called objectivity, in which one might be forced to take sides by the facts, to balance, in which one avoided taking sides by presenting the arguments for each. But there was another force at play here, a deep cultural force that wasn’t conservative.
COMMENTARY By Neal GaBler
(Conclusion) In fact, it was left-wing. And it wasn’t denying bias — in fact, it denied that there could be anything that wasn’t tainted with bias. That force was deconstructionism, and it connected with conservatism and with the old progressive principle of objectivity to create the toothless, spineless journalism we now have. Deconstructionism is a philosophical idea that denies fact or truth has an absolute meaning. Instead, these draw their meaning from the social and cultural context. Take any book: What does it mean? A deconstructionist might say that the answer is entirely dependent on when it is read, where it is read and who is reading it — which would make the idea of meaning irrelevant. There is no central essence, no hierarchy of value. To put it bluntly: We just made everything up. This theory became all the rage in university English departments back in the 1970s and 1980s — when the ideas of objective fact and verifiable truth in texts were themselves
under left-wing siege as handmaidens of the prevailing bourgeois order. But whatever impact deconstructionism may have had on university literature departments, its deepest influence may have been on journalism. That is where the idea of “no truth” meshed with the idea of “no advocacy.” In a world where everything was biased, there was no possible way to pull apart fact from fiction or truth from lie — so journalists just decided to report everything so long as there was no ascribed value to anything. It was a hyper form of democracy — a democracy in which every statement is just as good as any other statement. So when an editor says that there are facts and there is such a thing as truth, he is pushing back against at least 30 years of journalism and as many years of critical theory. In effect, he is taking on the culture. No one yet seems to have followed Thornton’s lead, but if the news media did, it would reshape our journalistic environment into one in which expertise matters, facts are verifiable, and opinions must be supported in order to be aired. It is easy to blame politics for all our woes. But the blame should rest equally on media outlets that are too afraid to state what the facts make obvious. We have Thornton to thank for pointing that out.

Bohol Mon Amour A SOJOURNER’S VIEW By Karl M. GaSpar, CSSr
B
Part 1 of 3
oHoL, akong pinangga, akong hinigugma (my love). It is hard to find accurate statistics as to how many Mindanawons could claim Bohol as their place of birth or that of their parents and ancestors. But one knows that it is considerable. Just by looking at maps and seeing the names of towns and barangays (New Corella, New Baclayon, etc.), one can tell that Bol-anons migrated to Mindanao in big waves. And in every market, there are crafts from Bohol which are for sale. In all corners of Mindanao, one can hear the joke about Bol-anons doing everything they can to go home to Bohol to be with relatives during their town fiesta. Indeed, for a big segment of the Mindanawon population, Bohol is their pinanggang hinigugma. When Bohol was hit on 15 october 2013 with a 7.2 magnitude earthquake (which also affected the nearby islands of Cebu, Siquijor, Negros occidental and Guimaras), it was not only the Bol-anons who grieved with the terrible devastation brought by the disaster. Their kin in Mindanao shared the grief and wondered how their relatives were faring even as more than 3,000 aftershocks have continued to shake the island with a total land area of 4,821 square kms. and a total population of 1,255,128 (Census data of 2010). Along with Bryan D. Angayan, the lay staff of our Center for Social and Ecological Concerns based in Cebu City, I went on a three-day visit to the worst hit towns of Bohol last 31 october to 2 November. Despite having seen the dramatic images of the extent of the devastation on Tv news coverage as well as in the internet, it was still an emotional roller-coaster to travel through the worst-hit places across the south-western part of the island and personally see the damages to lives and properties up close. From Tagbilaran where we conferred with Fr. Warly Salise, the Social Action Director of the Diocese to whom we had turned over (and continue to do so) all the relief assistance that we have been able to mobilize from the Redemptorist network across the country, we went to the towns that he considered the worst hit and still needed continuous relief assistance from outside. These included the inland towns of Sagbayan (which was nearest the epicenter), Catigbian, Loboc and the coastal towns of Loon and Maribojoc. We also visited the towns of Dauis, Baclayon, Loay, Sikatuna, Corella and Sikatuna. The statistics provided by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) were pretty grim; as of 29 october, there were 220 reported dead, 796 injured, 8 missing. of the more than 700,000 families affected in Central visayas, the majority were in Bohol. A total of 8,480 houses in Bohol were totally damaged while 27,321 were partially damaged. In Catigbian, which has a total population of 5,122 households, 4,865 were affected and 1,042 houses were totally damaged and 3,359 houses partially destroyed. The numbers are gruesome but the landscape one sees all over Bohol are even more ominous and gloomy. There are landslides everywhere; roads have been cleared of debris but one sees the extent of the damages on the infrastructure. on the cement and asphalt roads between Maribojoc and Loon, there are big cracks. Following the fissure that must parallel the fault underneath, one sees the crack go across the middle part of the church that has totally crumbled all the way to a side of a mountain where the landslide took place. Bridges like the one at Avatan that connects Maribojoc with the other towns broke down causing transportation problems and difficulties in the delivery of relief goods.

Defiant Vendors...FFROM 1 tion is insulting to those who understand Islam. “Jihad is only used as a last resort,” the retired colonel said, adding that “even in the latest incident in Zamboanga City, the use of jihad was not appropriate.” He said the defiant vendors are now feeling the pinch of the city’s campaign for them to comply with the ordinance. “Their padrinos (godfathers) are coming out, making calls and writing notes and appearing in their behalf, indicating that they are being adversely affected by the non-stop drive,” Jimlani said. Some of the backers of the non-complaint vendors are barangay captains, kagawads and even members of the police force, he reported. “We are also getting more threats because of our relentless drive,” he said, referring to anonymous threatening text messages he and his supervisors are receiving on a daily basis. He said that the number of vendors affected by the confiscations could not be determined as they are not arrested. “We will only know that when they come to us and claim the seized
merchandise,” Jimlani said. “But the goods can only be released to them if they get a barangay clearance and execute a deed of undertaking that henceforth they will not violate the ordinance and other lawful orders,” he added. He invited media practitioners to visit the team’s temporary warehouse in the old boxing gym and dormitory at the back of the Davao City Almendras Gym to have an idea of the volume of vendors’ goods the team has confiscated so far. Jimlani said that the virtual tug-of-war between his team and the disobedient vendors will continue indefinitely until the vendors become compliant. He appealed to the vendors to understand the demolition team’s situation. “We are only doing the task assigned to us by our mayor who is backed by legal order,” Jimlani said. He said the proposal to designate a place for the vendors to sell their wares and remove them from the sidewalks has been formally proposed and is expected to be discussed by Mayor Duterte when he reports to office today.

Malik definitely dead - Gazmin D
EPARTMENT of National Defense (DND) Secretary voltaire Gazmin on Monday expressed his belief that Habier Malik, the rogue Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) commander who led the attack on Zamboanga City last September, is
really dead. He also said that if Malik was really alive, as claimed by ranking officials of the MNLF faction loyal to founding chair Nur Misuari, then the group should have presented proof long ago. Gazmin said that the
Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) made the same claim when the military neutralized its spokesperson Abu Sabaya. But like Malik, the ASG is still to show their evidence that the latter is alive and well. Gazmin said the government is exerting all
efforts to apprehend Misuari to answer all the charges filed against him. He also declined to comment about the MNLF founding chair’s whereabouts adding that such matters are best not to be discussed. (PNA)
HE Department of Justice (DoJ) has charged more than 200 respondents due to the three-week bloody encounters between forces of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF)-Misuari faction and government troops in Zamboanga City last September 8 to 29. According to Prosecutor General Claro A. Arellano, from the original 63 accused, there are
now 280 respondents facing rebellion charges and violation of Republic Act 9851 or crimes against humanity. This was after the DoJ on Monday filed the seventh amended information in court. From the 280 respondents, 12 of which, including MNLF founding chair Nur Misuari and MNLF commander Ustadz Habier Malik, are still continuously being
hunted by authorities. However, Defense Secretary voltaire Gazmin during an awarding ceremony to those injured during the Zamboanga siege on Monday expressed his belief that Malik was really dead. He said if the MNLF leader was really alive, as claimed by ranking officials of the MNLF faction loyal to founding chair Nur Misuari, then the group
should have presented proof long ago. Arellano gave assurances that the filing of the amended information will not delay the transfer of the case from Zamboanga City to Taguig City. The Supreme Court earlier approved the transfer of the case from the Zamboanga City Regional Trial Court to the Taguig City RTC due to security reasons. (PNA)

focus their attention on cemeteries alone. DCPo reported that this year statistics on prohibition of smoking, illegal drugs, gambling, liquor ban and bladed weapons only tallied 2 cases while
last year they recorded 151 cases of those violations. This shows that the public is well informed and cooperative on what to do because of the media, an official said. For illegal drugs, last

Brillante’s ‘Sapi’:
Face to face with possession A
CCLAIMED filmmaker Brillante Mendoza brings yet another masterpiece to the big screen with his latest movie, ‘Sapi,’ slated to open at SM Cinemas in SM City Davao, SM Lanang Premier and SM City General Santos starting November 6. Produced by Solar Entertainment and CenterStage Productions, the film follows the terrifyingjourney of contemporary news media as they come face-to-face with the phenomenon of possession. It stars Dennis Trillo, Meryll Soriano and Baron Geisler. Director Brillante Mendoza, who has received critical praise for his award-winning film, ‘Thy Womb,’ sets on a satire-horror route in ‘Sapi’ with a hilarious and terrifying depiction of what members of the news media will do to capture a story. In the film, Sarimanok Broadcasting Network (SBN), whose news production is headed bytwo employees, Meryll Flores (Soriano) and Dennis Marquez (Trillo), finds
that documenting an actual spiritual possessionwould be their only hope to stay alive in the competition. SBN news team searched everywhere for an incident of possession, but could not find any. Meanwhile, its rival network PBC gets hold of an isolated case through a footage taken by its cameraman, Baron valdez (Geisler). Desperate, Meryll enters into a deal to acquire the said footage but soon finds herself confronted with an exorcist reality that emulates the corrupt political system within the Tv network she works for. The filmwas presentedat Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2013 and was described as “a chilling study on how superstition, mass media, and mass hysteria can converge.” Watch ‘Sapi’ at SM Cinemas to discover what you are afraid of!For queries and screening schedules, contact (082) 2852356, (082) 297-6998 and (083) 878-1450.

missed assignments, but we picked it up and a lot of guys made some good plays,’’ Henry said. ‘’I don’t want to say it was because we wanted it more, but you could tell. When the game was on the line, guys were like: ‘We were already up 20. We were not going to let this one slip by.’’’ Henry started at forward for the first time as a Laker and the 19th time in 137 NBA games, while Nick Young came off the bench. D’Antoni’s intention with the lineup change was to perk up the team at the outset, and also inject some energy into the Lakers’ second unit while doing likewise for the cold-shooting Young.
’re still trying to find the right combinations and rack up the wins while we do it,’’ Henry said of the growing pains the club is going through without Kobe Bryant. ‘’We have a lot of new guys, and a lot of guys still need to learn how to play with each other. We’re trying new lineups and stuff, so we’re still going to be working and trying to compete.’’ Henry, who received nine stitches in his forehead during Friday’s loss to San Antonio after colliding with teammate Wesley Johnson’s knee on a drive to the basket and missed all six of his shots that night, was 5 for 11 from the field against the Hawks.
Heat breaks skid M
IAMI (AP) -- Extra pass, easy win. It’s a tried-and-true formula for the Miami Heat. LeBron James scored 25 points, Chris Bosh added 24 and the Heat beat the winless Washington Wizards 103-93 on Sunday night to snap a rare two-game slide. Dwyane Wade scored 20 points for Miami, which hasn’t dropped three straight regular-season games since Jan. 10-13, 2012. The Heat (2-2) had 32 assists on 37 field goals, including on all nine of their baskets in the third quarter. ‘’That’s what we do,’’ James said. ‘’We understand that it’s easy for everyone when we move the ball, share the ball and we play like that.’’
Including playoffs, the Heat are now 100 games over .500 at home since the start of the 2010-11 season - 127-27. And when collecting at least 25 assists in the Big Three era, they are 58-5. of the 10 Heat players who played, nine scored, nine got at least one assist and all 10 grabbed at least one rebound. ‘’The intensity was better and the consistent ball movement was better than it’s been,’’ Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. Bradley Beal scored 19 points for the Wizards. Marcin Gortat finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds for Washington (0-3), which shot 43 percent and allowed the Heat to convert 21 turnovers into 25 points.
Amit nears world 10-ball title
T
HE Philippines’ top woman cue artist, Rubilen Amit, is on the brink of becoming the first ever to repeat as World 10-Ball Champion as she entered the semi-finals of the international tournament early Monday morning at the luxurious Resorts World in Paranaque City. The petite former call center agent jumped out to an early lead over Korea’s Eunji Park and never let looked back on the way to a lopsided 8-1 victory as the crowd cheered her on. Amit knew Park could be dangerous having eliminated World No.1 Sha Sha Liu of China earlier. Should Amit win this year’s edition of the Yalin Women’s World 10Ball championship, she will be the first woman to achieve the feat twice since capturing the title on home court in 2009. “Having declining re-
sults here ever since my 2009 win has definitely been on my mind, so I really took time off to train and prepare for this one, said Amit before the Worlds started a week ago. The women’s world billiards championship produced by Dragon Promotions headed by Charlie Williams has been playing since oct. 28 and is scheduled to end Monday night. Monday’s late evening semis will pit Kelly Fisher of England vs Yu Han of China while Amit battles Taipei’s Pei Chen Tsai with the winners battling for the championship. No Taiwanese or Chinese has ever won the World 10-Ball. An elite 48 world-class lady professionals from 20 countries participated in the 2013 Yalin Women’s World Championship broadcast worldwide by ABS-CBN affiliates. (PNA)

TRAVEL
In search of the elusive star
Dining at the Michelin-starred Tim Ho Wan in Singapore
The main reason why people travel has changed throughout the years. Thanks to more affordable air fare as well as better connectivity. So when my friends decided to celebrate golden girl, Booboo Maramba’s birthday in Singapore everyone was all-in and thanks to SilkAir’s direct flight from Davao to the Lion City, we arrived just in time to have dinner at the Michelin-starred Tim ho Wan at Plaza Singapura. The visit to Tim ho Was actually started almost two years ago on a trip to hong Kong with the same set of friends. Due to a tight reservation schedule there, we were not able to have a taste at the restaurant’s original hong Kong store. This time however, we were able to breeze through the lines as there
was a gap after the early evening crowd. Tim ho Wan is known for many things on its menu and being hungry from the almost 5-hour flight (our plane took the longer Davao-Cebu-Singapore route), we ordered almost everything on the restaurant’s menu. There was no Xiao Long
Garlic Mushroom Spinach Dumplings.
Tonic jelly
Glutenous Rice Dumpling.
Siu Mai
Baos here but instead, Tim ho Wan is famous for their Baked Buns with Barbecue Pork. The buns tasted absolutely amazing with a nice balance of saltiness and smokiness from the roast pork and the sweetness coming from the crisp and milky buns as well as the sweet sauce that keeps the inside of the bun moist. We also had to have Prawn Dumplings as well as their famous Garlic, Mushroom, Spinach Dumplings which had dumpling skins so thin yet do break the moment you pick the dumplings up with your chopsticks. Another highlight of the meal was the Steamed egg Cake. When it arrived, everyone thought it was just their jazzed up version of steamed rice cake, but the moment our mouths took a bit of the light airy cake we realised that it was much, much more complex than we expected with a light salty flavour and richness coming from salted egg yolks that were incorporated into the cake.
Perfectly made Prawn Dumplings.
The deliciously salty and sweet Baked Bun with Barbecue Pork. For all the deliciousness Tim ho Wan offered though, the best was with the price. For a Michelinstarred restaurant, the meal did not break the bank. Imagine three Barbecue Pork Baked Buns cost just SGD4.50 (around Php 157)! Tim ho was was literally a steal and is a highly recommended foodie stop whenever in Singapore. Follow me on Instagram and on Twitter @kennethkingong for more travel and foodie finds as well as happenings in, around and beyond Durianburg. The smile and the two tumbs up show my approval.
The light steamed egg cake is a must try.
Meet the perfect Singapore food trip companions.

A taste of Carte Blanche in GenSan
A sneak peek into the Carte Blanche Davao party CARTE BLANCHE (n.) -Complete freedom to act as one wishes or thinks best. IT IS only right and just, that they had one of their pre-gig tours last Oct. 25, 2013 at Freedom Rock Bar & Lounge, Pahayahay, General Santos City.
It’s amazing how Those Damn Nerds, DJ Miaow & DJ Ais Nicaution, totally turned the room into a euphoric paradise, which made eager resident partygoers rush in and bring fire to the dance floor, while sampling drinks from the bar’s wide selection of local and imported beers along with cocktails that surely made everyone let lose and just enjoy the night. Generals do know how to party. I don’t consider myself as a party girl, I seldom go out, but that Friday night turned me into one. Was still having second thoughts weather to go or not, but when I was able to get a taste of those sweet sweet mixes I immediately changed my mind. I asked myself, who wouldn’t want to be a part of this milestone? To be able to attend the very first 3D electric music carnival in Southern Philippines, which will feature a kickass power house line up of the most sought after DJ’s. (DJ Katsy Lee, DJ Surf and Jack Bates, “The Zombettes” -Ornusa Cadness and Sanya Smith, DJ Callum David and “Those Damn Nerds in 3D “ - Mia Ayesa and Mark Nicosia), that would be happening this November 16, 3pm at the Crocodile Park Concert Grounds Davao city. Who wouldn’t want to party for a cause? This event is also a pledge to help finance the projects of habitat for humanity Philippines by being it’s yearly Beneficiary. Who wouldn’t want a chance to dress up in fun vibrant carnival themed outfits? Reminiscent of those carnivals that meant the world to us when we’re little kids. Manic Night-
ning Productions partnered with Party Animal events Production, em-
powered, armed with brilliant ideas, definitely made it more irresistible to come dressed to kill by letting their audiences creativity run wild and express themselves to the extremes by giving away P5,000 for best costume. I can’t wait to see those outfits. For those who’re worried they’d have a hard time in getting a ride, coasters would be waiting for you by batches at these designated areas, to

TRADED. Burly forward Enrico Villanueva is going to GlobalPort in the new PBA season.
Villanueva traded to GP G
LoBAL Port welcomed veteran slotman Enrico villanueva to the team after the PBA approved his transfer from Barako Bull in exchange for Willie Miller and Hans Thiele. The trade was consummated on draft day, which also yielded a big haul of rookies for GlobalPort. The Batang Pier took in in talented Far Eastern University guards Terrence Romeo, RR Garcia, 6-foot-7 center Isaac Hol-
stein, forward Nico Salva, and guard Nico Salva in the event. villanueva will take the spot vacated by Yousef Taha, who was dealt to Petron in a three-way trade that netted GlobalPort the No. 5 pick from Barako Bull. According to Romero, the moves are part of the team’s rebuilding process. “We just did our homework. A day before the draft, hindi ako nakatulog, we really
planned it. Me, Coach Junel (Baculi), basketball operations head Erick Arejola, and team manager BJ Manalo,” GlobalPort team owner Mikee Romero said in an exclusive interview. “We rebuilt the whole team and masaya ako sa mga nakuha namin.” Both Miller, a twotime Most valuable Player winner, and Thiele, a journeyman forward, are making their return to a Barako Bull uniform.
Slaughter began practicing with the Gin Kings last week, joining the team even before his selection became official. Hopes are high as Slaughter joins a team that has not won a PBA title in five years. For the former Ateneo slotman, he hopes he can remedy that situation. “Just do whatever I can to help my team win championships, that’s my only goal right now. I’m not looking for any indi-
vidual showdowns, individual statistics. What I’m looking forward is winning,” said Slaughter. Fans inside Robinsons Manila broke out in familiar “Gi-Ne-Bra!” chants when Slaughter’s name was announced, making the young behemoth feel so welcome. “I’m already feeling their support. I don’t want to let them down. I will always give my 110 percent to all Ginebra games,” said Slaughter.

Teng is ‘steal of the draft’ C
oMING into Sunday’s PBA draft, many people felt Jeric Teng was a surefire first-rounder. So when the University of Santo Tomas hotshot fell to the second round, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters quickly grabbed Teng with the 12th overall pick. “I think Jeric Teng was the steal of the draft,” said Rain or Shine guard Chris Tiu, who, like Teng, is an alumnus of Xavier School. “A lot of people predicted him to go first round, we were surprised that he was still available at No. 12. So,
thank you na lang.” Tiu said that the talented Teng would have plenty of opportunity to prove his mettle under coach Yeng Guiao, who is known for distributing minutes well among his players. “First round or second round picks would flourish under Coach Yeng because you would be given opportunity to blossom or develop,” said Tiu. “Kasi hindi niya pinipigilan yung game mo. I’ve seen it in the past year, now I know kung bakit yung mga players na nahawakan niya nag-fo-flourish.”
Teng fits in well with a Rain or Shine team full of Tsinoy players such as Tiu, another Xavier alumnus TY Tang, Jeff Chan, and Paul Lee. The team is owned by Chinese Filipino businessmen Raymond Yu and Terry Que, and even coach Yeng Guiao is of Chinese descent. “Feel at home ako dito kasi Chinese yung management. Andito rin sina Kuya Chris, fellow Xavier ko pa,” said Teng. Guiao joked that stocking his team with Tsinoy players is all part of a grand plan.

HEN Greg Slaughter was finally announced as the top overall pick in the 2013 PBA draft, it meant getting exactly what he had wished for: to become part of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. “It’s a dream come true for me,” Slaughter said. “I couldn’t ask for anything better. Ginebra has the best support. I feel like I really have a good chance for this team right now.”

ALL it a rare coincidence. The top two Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) picks in the 2013 Annual Rookie Draft have one thing in common. Greg Slaughter, the 7-foot behemoth from Ateneo, and Ian Sangalang, the 6-6- agile big man from San Sebastian, both donned the jersey of The Royal Mandaya Hotel-CMo during the Mayor Rody and vice Mayor Pulong Duterte Kadayawan open Invitational basketball tournament in Davao City in August. “It’s our pride that before they go to the PBA, they both played for our team here in Davao,” said Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go who relished the shortlived stint of the top picks from a rich pool of rookies knocking on the doors of the PBA. Team owner Glen Escandor also beamed upon learning Slaughter and Sangalang went 1-2 in the draft. Escandor considers the duo as his hardcourt version of Twin Towers. The Royal Mandaya Hotel also boasts of twin tower buildings. “At least we made history by having these two great players in our team. I am sure they will go a long way in their professional careers,” said Escandor. Slaughter was made No. 1 pick by Ginebra Gin Kings, and shifty Ian Sangalang was selected by San Mig Coffee as the second overall pick. They led the TRMHCMo squad managed by Go in the tournament to coincide with the annual Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival. Sangalang also played

The talented rookies are expected to live up to their billing in the PBA starting with the Philippine Cup which fires off November 17 in three different venues, including one in Davao City.
