‘PASKO FIESTA’ By ARMANDO B. FENEQUITO JR.

OR a time, the appetite to celebrate Christmas waned as Dabawenyos feel the pain of the wrath of a typhoon that claimed more than 5,000 lives and displaced thousands of families in Eastern Visayas. Even Davao City’s year-ending festival Pasko Fiesta was at some point placed in peril or being cancelled. For Dabawenyos, however, the essence of Christmas will not be complete without the celebration of the year’s fourth festival on the calendar. Then came the decision made by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to push through with the celebration albeit in austere fashion. Oscar Casayasay coordinator of Pasko Fiesta stressed that even if there is an austerity measure imposed by the Davao City Government on the budget for the Pasko Fiesta, there is still reason the Christmas festival will be still celebrated by the Dabawenyos and continue a tradition that has run

for 10 years. Casaysay said that the annual Christmas festival will be mounted on a meager P3-million budget for all the activities of the event. He said that the city trimmed down the budget in observance of Mayor Duterte’s marching orders that the city will streamline the cost of the celebration in sympathy with the people of Tacloban and other Yolanda-hit areas. “Apan, maski gamay pa man ang budget ginapangkamutan jud sa syudad sa Davao, ni Mayor Duterte nga mas malipayon ug mas mahinungadanon ang atong celebration sa pasko,” Casaysay declared. The celebration will start on Monday (December 9) with the ceremonial switching on of lights dubbed as ‘Dan-ag sa Pasko’ within City Hall and Sangguniang Panlungsod with the Davao City Officials which will be headed by Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, Vice Mayor Paolo Z. Duterte and other local officials. “Kalinaw ug kahusay,

diwa kanunay sa pasko sa Dabaw,” is this year’s theme with series of activities such as ‘parolan’ competition as part of the ‘dan-ag’ in which every barangay of the city will show their creativity in making Christmas lanterns to be displayed in the city government complex; ‘Kasadya sa pasko’ which will showcase local talents in every district of the city; ‘kadasig sa pasko’ or the street events which include the cheer dance competition, band competition, vocal solo and the hundred voice choir contests. Other major highlights will be the ‘hudyaka sa pasko’ or nightly event along Palma Gil Street which will start on December 7 until January 1; the ‘Himaya sa Pasko’ or the nine dawn masses which will start on December 16 and end on December 24; and the selling of ‘kakanin’ such as ‘puto bumbong’and ‘bibingka’ at the parking area at the parking area of Sanguniang Panglunsod along Bolton Street.

ARKING the 100th day since alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles surrendered to President Benigno Aquino III, some 300 young skaters, cyclists, and bladers in Davao City converged Sunday to protest against the government officials involved in the P10 billion scam. Angel Abella, Scrap Pork Network convenor in Davao City said in an exclusive interview with Edge Davao that this is part of their move which aims to make Dabawenyos more informed of the scam and how greatly it affects individual lives. The attendees, named as the “critical mass” took the route from Magallanes Rotonda to SM

Lanang Premier, wherein in every point, they discussed pressing issues on PDAF. Abella said that they still wanted PDAF and the bureaucratic system to be scrapped. According to her, as taxpayers, it is a must to be a vigilant to avoid the use of tax collected from every Filipino hand . “We want transparency. Personalan na ‘to. If we are already enjoying the services we have right now, how much more if this scam did not happened. We might have the bike lanes for these young people,” Dawn Albert Pates, another volunteer of Scrap Pork Network. “We are watching you,” Pates said, adding that

it is not only the youth sector who is protesting against the slow probe, but also the entities from private institutions. She said it is “frustating” how the government took the pork barrel scam without considering how it greatly affect the lives of the people who were supposed to be benefitted by the PDAF. “Ang tagal-tagal ng justice system,” Abella said, noting that the PDAF issue needs to be resurfaced as senators Juan Ponce Enrile-Miriam Defensor rift try to bury it in the tables of the legislators. “If given the chance, even people in the streets want to comment on this. Weaving magic for Yolanda victims By ATHENA JILLIAN BRAVO

I

T’S been a month of struggle for the victims of typhoon Yolanda in Eastern Visayas. Help came from just about every corner in the world in a global display of affection and selflessness. From countries with some erstwhile entanglements with the Philippines like China and Chinese Taipei, to past conqueror Japan, to ally United States, to global basketball superstars Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and the ill-fated actor Paul Walker. They all came to help. From our own corner, we have a group of magicians who weaved their magic, tricks that is, to bring relief to the typhoon victims. The “magic for a cause” is actually an insti-

tutional project of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Durian City Inc. aptly dubbed as “Madyik Ta!: Bonjee meets Santa” Year 10 held at NCCC Mall on December 4, 2013. Collaborating with JCI Davao Regional Chap-

All proceeds and donations will be turned over by JCI Durian City Inc. to JCI Tacloban Chapter. “Our volunteers from JCI Davao Regional Chapters are prepares to travel and bring the relief goods to Tacloban by land,” JCI Durian City Inc. 2013 President, Ronila Hutalle said. Banking is now just a text away financial system (MFS) in Davao City by January next year. Dolores Torres, president and chief-executive-officer of CBI, led the launching of the banking breakthrough last Friday. financial services, remittances and saving can be done using mobile connectivity. “There will be no delayed payments because even the clients residing in far areas like mountains can use their phones in making bank transactions,” Torres said, adding that their member will no longer need to go to their offices just to attend weekly training at their center. She said that everything will be just a text away. MFS is a system developed by the CARD MRI Information Technology (CMIT), an umbrella cor-

poration under the CARD Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (MRI). CMIT is partnering with another IT based company to develop the internal security system of MFS. Torres said that through MFS she expects that their membership will increase as it will cater more unbank areas not just in the region 11 but also in the whole country as they make banking easier and more accessible for everybody. Meanwhile, the microfinance-oriented rural bank is also eyeing Davao region for their massive

expansion in the next five years. Torres said that they are planning to putup 25 more branches out of 65 branches already approved by the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for expansion throughout the country. She said that by the first or second quarter of the year, they will be opening their branch in Malalag, Davao del Sur. The bank is also eyeing Tagum City and Malita for possible expansion. At present, CBI has three existing branches in Davao City located in Magallanes, Buhangin, and the newly-inaugurated Matina. Each has a loan portfolio of P5 to P7-M.

The opening of the new branch in Matina is expected to increase their membership by 100,000 before the year ends. As of October 2013, CBI has a total of 987,098 savers and 383, 615 borrowers with an outstanding savings of P3.2 billion and loans of P3.3 billion. It has P1.7 billion in assets, P3.6 billion in liabilities, and P1.1 billion in equity. BSP awarded CBI with a Hall of Fame Award for Financial Inclusion after garnering the award in three consecutive years (2011, 2012, and 2013).

EXPANDING THE MARKET

Comprehensive RCEP being formulated By CHENEEN R. CAPON crc@edgedavao.net

T

O expand the market opportunities of businessmen in the country, a more comprehensive partnership among Asean countries through Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is being formulated, an official said during the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) information campaign dubbed Doing Business in Free Trade Areas at The Marco Polo Davao yesterday. Raymond Astillas, senior trade and industry development specialist of the Department of Trade and Industry told reporters that RCEP will

be composed of a partnership with 10 Asean countries namely Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Laos, Indonesia, Cambodia, Brunei, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Philippines and six other nations: Japan, India, Hong Kong, Korea, Australia and New Zealand. Astillas said that although there were existing individual agreements between Philippines and the other six nation, being included in RCEP will increase the market opportunities for Filipino businessmen because all 16 nations will have a unanimous agreement on market trade.

EMENT manufacturer Holcim Philippines, Inc. again topped the Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference (ANSMEC) Awards Night as its plants took home eight awards including the highest honor for excellence in environmental management, safety and health, and social and community development. Holcim Philippines’s plant in Lugait, Misamis Oriental received the Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award (PMIEA), while the company’s facilities in Bacnotan, La Union, Norzagaray, Bulacan, and Davao City received Platinum Awards, the second highest honor. It was the sixth straight year Holcim Philippines bagged the PMIEA. Its Bacnotan and Davao plants received the PMIEA last year, while its Lugait facility won this in 2009. Aside from these, the Lugait and Norzagaray facilities were first and second runners-up respectively for Best Mining Forest-Non Metallic Category, while the Bacnotan plant was a runner up for Safest

Cement Plant Operation. Juanito Duron, a shift operations manager for Holcim Philippines’s Lugait plant, was named Best Mine Supervisor. The awards were handed out on Nov. 22 in Baguio. Holcim Philippines CEO Ed Sahagun thanked the organizers for consistently recognizing the company’s commitment to responsible operations. “I do commit that in the following years, our participation here will not just be to win awards but to share with companies who would like to learn from our best practices, and for us to learn from other companies,” he added. Noting that the ANSMEC’s theme for 2013 is “60 Years of Giving Back,” Sahagun said the industry should do more to help in the rebuilding efforts of Visayas, which was recently battered by natural calamities. “On behalf of Holcim Philippines, I’d like to appeal to everyone to at least give more to the victims of Yolanda and spend more for the rebuilding of Visayas. We have some experiences to share, and we’d

“Existing Asean plus 1 [referring to existing individual trade agreement between Philippines and Japan, China, Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand], Asean plus 6 talk among themselves, consult with themselves to come up with one agreement. So mas malawak and coverage and scope and the benefits will be bigger,” he said, adding that “the more you integrate, the more you enhance the trade.” RCEP was launched just this year and expected to end the negotiation by 2015. Currently, they have finished two rounds of negotiation with these

countries that dealt with the discussion of goods, services and investments. Third round of discussion is scheduled on end of January next year at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He said that the partnership will further lower existing barriers which hinder easy trade in all nations. For instance, market barriers were lowered down because of the FTAs which started its implementation ten years ago. It [RCEP] will also enhance the connectivity of the 16 nations especially in the trade of goods, services, and investments.

“Now is the time to enhance our connectivity with Aseans kasi kung mas connected tayo, mas madaling magmove ang mga goods, services, and investments,” Astillas said adding that the partnership will also lower down the tariff. Meanwhile, existing agreements are Asean Framework on Services Agreement, Asean Comprehensive Investment Agreement, and Asean Trade in Goods Agreement. The three serves as the pillar of the Asean free trade area and included in the FTA signed by 10 countries in 2003.

And they will start rebuilding, so they can live in a sustainable community,” he said. The PMIEA was es-

tablished in 1997 through Executive Order No. 399 in compliance with the policy that mining activities should be pro-environment and pro-people. Its selection committee is composed of the secretaries of the Departments of Environment, Trade,

Society of sevens

ALL it an uncanny coincidence, but there seems to be a convergence of the number 7 in the current sensational state of our nation. Take a look at the headlines of stories appearing in the national dailies for a number of days during the week just ended. First, there was feisty lady Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago accusing Minority Senate leader Juan Ponce of having committed seven sins. With all the flair and drama that has been her trademark as a speaker on serious and entertaining topics, Ms Santiago subjected her octogenarian colleague to a blitzkrieg of accusations which could easily turn an august body into sixes and sevens except that this particular Senate is made up of gentlemen and ladies who are by now all too familiar with the protracted animosity between Mr. Enrile and Ms Santiago. Theirs is a seven-year itch, a popular century-old idiomatic expression to describe a relationship gone awry. Enrile’s alleged seven sins, of course, merit looking into as they suggest high crimes that ought not to be ignored by a Senate whose members have been both lauded and criticized for endless investi-

gations. In another sensational news story, seven former members of the House of Representatives are among those accused of pocketing up to 78 percent in kickbacks in their shady dealings with fake foundations owned by detained businesswoman Janet Napoles. Even the supplemental budget for the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2013 as initiated in the House by Davao City Rep. Isidro T. Ungab –more than P14 billionto augment the country’s Calamity Fund is divisible by seven. It is said that the bulk of the supplemental appropriations will go to relief, rehabilitation and recovery of areas left in ruins by super typhoon “Yolanda”, which followed closely the devastating magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Bohol and Cebu on October 15 killing 1,883 people. To Dabawenyos, even non-believers in numerology, the pseudo science dealing in the occult meaning of numbers and their supposed influence on human life, the coincidence and ominous incidents are too much to be ignored. Indeed, especially by citizens of a city which turns 77 years old next year.

Dangerously unstable

P

RESSED HARD AGAINST THE WALL – It was Commissioner Rozzano Rufino Biazon’s misfortune that at about the same time he is determined to rid the Bureau of Customs (BoC) of its “poisons and toxins,” the Justice department included him in a new batch of respondents for alleged misappropriation of his “pork barrel” funds through a bogus foundation of PDAF scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles. He was then a member of the Lower House when the case allegedly happened, but Biazon vehemently denied the allegation. However, that of course, hasn’t made it any better, at least not immediately. Based on the findings of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the vague DOJ is hell bent on implicating him for the alleged misuse of his pork barrel allocation amounting to a meager P1.9 million. Goodness gracious! Perhaps it worries Ruffy no end that the new twist would gravely affect his duties at the graft-ridden Customs bureau and his family prompting him to tender his immediate resignation to pave the way for an ongoing investigation, which President Benigno Aquino III gladly accepted. The commissioner and his father, former AFP chief, senator and incumbent Marikina congressman Rodolfo Biazon feel despair about how quickly the events changed the course of Ruffy’s career. They also seem able to know the reasons behind the suspicious establishing and filing of a case against Ruffy. The elder Biazon was deeply troubled by the turn of events that prodded him to suspect the reported “friction” among the President’s trusted men has something to do with Ruffy’s predicament. Commissioner Biazon happens to be one of the main constituents of the President’s party coalition. Thus, his role in the present dispensation probably has not impressed some envious characters within the group.

What has the protracted infighting among the President’s men got to do with the political rigmarole? Of course, Ruffy has declared an all-out war on his bureau and the only way he can fully execute a “cleansing process” and effectively wage it is with the President’s unwavering support. Both father and son suspect that through the mischievous prodding of Aquino’s “whisper and tattler brigade”, the latter thinks there is an outside chance that the BoC can be saved in its present condition and he needs to start looking for a new savior – Biazon being the “collateral damage.” Although pressed hard against the wall, Ruffy is confident he can endure the test of his profession and clear his name and reputation. The President’s cordon sanitaire certainly is in a bind. The fear is that when the speculations and reports about a power struggle within the group becomes public. It will not only change the political equation between the groups that composed the coalition, but bring down the government as well. Right now, in an ironic twist the series of bad luck are haunting the Aquino administration. Media are full of reports about behind-the-scene political bickering among the President’s trusted adjutants. Political analysts predict that sooner the President’s inner circle is bound to disintegrate and some are pessimistic still, saying the present dispensation is dangerously unstable. Aside from being devastated by a spate of natural and man-made calamities, the Aquino leadership is also dogged by a wave of corruption scandals. The most

significant involved the misappropriation of P10 billion of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel funds allegedly embroiling some key figures in Congress. There is also the infamous issue evolving around the equally anomalous Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP), which critics described as incomparable and similar to the pork barrel fund scam. The President’s problems don’t end there. Public anger rises over prices of basic commodities increasing to undetermined levels. On the food front, high-profile grains officials seemed have chosen to keep rice production figures secret in a bid to stop the rice cartel from manipulating prices, but that has made consumers leery that the rice shortage could be more serious than the administration is willing to admit. The inflation spiral likewise could worsen with an impending increase in prices of gasoline, diesel fuel and other refined petroleum products expected this December. The escalation of prices came as a surprise since the Aquino administration scored high in the economic front. And back to Biazon’s case, political analysts and keen observers’ perceptions reflect the real situation: there’s an ongoing power struggle in the presidential inner circle that ultimately resulted to treachery and betrayal. Ruffy Biazon is likely the first victim. If he is to be faulted, it is Ruffy’s perceived leniency and kid-glove policy in dealing with the well-organized syndicates inside the BoC. Some feel he could have been tougher on the gang of thieves inside the bureau. The way things are going, experts and inside sources suspect that no matter how they will look at it, a certain powerful and influential faction at the Palace is after the head of Ruffy and hell bent on purging him from the most coveted post. However, there is little doubt that Ruffy will be able to pull though the current rough path. It is just a matter of time.

“ Gusto ko sa Switzerland. Puede pud sa Cayman Islands , sa St Kitts-Nevis, o di ba, sa St Vincent in the Carribean” “Por dyos, por santo, is that legal ?”

“Dili na kana puede ron--- mga US Federal agents naga bantay sa mga banko dinha.” “But all these don’t explain why you’re begging here in secret” “Tanan mga boxers nag world champion---nahapay. Siguro, gusto ang BIR tanan mga boxers sa Pilipinas mahapay.” “I don’t think the BIR is really that oppressive” “Wala na koy salig diha. Ako na pud ang target sa gobyerno.” “But what will you do with all those coins in your pockets? “Hatag nako sa simbahan---basin ma-embargo pa sa BIR,” the boxer said, breaking into a smile, making him look, for a brief second, like Manny. It was now early evening and the drizzle turned into torrents of rain, with people scurrying about with their umbrellas. Domeng dug into his pocket to make sure the ten peso coin was still there…..it was a long way home. (Comments? Email me at> tradingpost_davao@yahoo.com)

It’s not just fast-food workers who are underpaid COMMENTARY BY HELAINE OLEN

Y

(Conclusion)

ET, even though salaries are inadequate throughout much of the dining industry, somehow customers only get indignant about the working conditions at the most traditional of the fast-food outlets. When a Five Guys franchise owner complained earlier this year about how the cost of offering his workers health insurance under the Affordable Care Act would force him to up the prices charged for such things as the Little Bacon Burger and Cajun Style Fries, that customer indignation vanished within a few news cycles. The same thing happened when Salon. com reported late last month on the less-than-wholesome working conditions endured by those working for New York “natural” mini-chain Amy’s Bread. It’s not like we don’t know the wages offered by both are inadequate. “I don’t think you can say one company is doing much better than the others,” says Martin Rafanan, a community organizer with the Fast Food Worker Movement in St, Louis. So why don’t we admit it? Well, tackling McDonald’s, Taco Bell and the like is quite easy for a certain young or upwardly mobile — or at least previously mobile — demographic. They aren’t going to those establishments, or at least not that often. Traditional fast food isn’t that good for you or the environment. Just ask Fast Food Nation’s Eric Schlosser or Super Size Me’s Morgan Spurlock. On the other hand, more than a few probably lazily assume that if the quality of the menu items at a fast casual establishment is good, the salaries must be the same. Others are likely so busy congratulating themselves for their healthy and wholesome choices, they don’t pause to think about the lives of the people serving it up. The truth is all too many of us feel we are indulging in a virtuous luxury when we dine at a fast casual outlet, and we don’t really want to ask too many questions about why the bill is still so relatively easy on our wallets. Our politics are as righteous as our taste, right? As a result, when we begin to contemplate what besides the ingredients really goes into making Panera Bread’s Chilled Shrimp and Soba Noodle Salad or Amy’s Bread’s Vegetarian Hummus on Organic Miche sandwich, it can get uncomfortable fast. Suddenly we are pondering if simply providing politically correct menu items is enough for an organization to claim it is serving “food with integrity,” as Chipotle does, or if more needs to be done to make sure such organizations treat their workers with financial integrity. No wonder many diners would just as soon dodge the question.

Ducati PHL launches Hyperstrada T

HERE’S a new beast on the block from the famed Ducati breed. Meet the Ducati Hyperstrada, unleashed for 2013. Here’s the bike’s description: The Ducati Hyperstrada is between the worlds of motard and touring. Decked-out with 50 liters of side luggage, a center stand and a touring windscreen Hyperstrada has been tailored for long journeys with 20mm taller handlebars, a wider and thicker seat and passenger grab handles. There are two 12V auxiliary power outlets to provide power for GPS units and heated vests. The suspension is also revived for touring duty

with a shorter 5.9-inch stroke at both ends from the KYB fork and Sachs shock. Panigale-style 10-spoke wheels come wrapped with Pirelli Scorpion Trail tires to complete the package that weighs in at 399 pounds. Ducati Philippines president and CEO Toti Alberto led the official media launch of the Hyperstrada last December 4 at the Ducati Manila Showroom at 102 P.Tuazon St. in Cubao, Quezon City. Joining Alberto in the launch covered by motoring journalists in the country is Marc De Joya, Ducati Philippines general manager. [Neil Bravo]

Motor Image brings ‘Subaru Love Drive’ “L

OVE. It’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru,” has been the Japanese automaker’s slogan for the North American market for quite some time. Though the Philippines is sticking to the international slogan, “Confidence in Motion”, it seems a bit of the love is rubbing onto Philippine distributor, Motor Image Pilipinas. Motor Image Pilipinas launched on Saturday the Subaru Love Drive—a program where they aim to pay it forward to people and animals that need it the most. With the Subaru Love Drive, Motor Image Pilipinas is aiming to raise and donate PHP 500,000 to two beneficiaries: the Hospicio de San Jose and the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)—with the help of Subaru owners. Under the first part of the Subaru Love Drive, every Subaru sold from now until February 2014 (which is fittingly the month of Valentine’s Day) equates to a PHP 100,000 donation to the Subaru Love Drive fund. This initiative is a first for Motor Image Pilipinas and has one objective: to drive home a message of charity and hope. By the end of February, Motor Image Pilipinas hopes to

raise PHP 500,000 for both beneficiaries. The second part of the Subaru Love Drive entails a Love Drive Wall on Motor Image Pilipinas’s official website (www.motorimage. net/PH). On the Love Drive Wall, people can show their support by selecting a list of items to donate to either to Hospicio de San Jose or PAWS, and turning over their pledged goods to any of Subaru’s eight showrooms nationwide: Greenhills, Global City, Alabang, Pampanga, Batangas, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, and Davao for collection. The Hospicio de San Jose is the first welfare agency in the Philippines and has been a home to orphans, elderly, and abandoned and special children. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is a volunteer-based, non-government organization whose goal is to prevent animal cruelty through education, animal sheltering, and advocacy. With all of Motor Image Pilipinas’s recent success, the Subaru Love Drive is the company’s way of giving back. Indeed, the Subaru Love Drive proves that love is indeed what makes a Subaru, a Subaru; or in this case, makes a Subaru owner.

DEEP into Langkawi Island’s Kilim Geoforest Park, one easily gets mystified by a sprawling masterpiece—a natural landscape that is perhaps one of the best places to worship nature. Here, the river flows mysteriously from clear to murky or from calm to eerily calm, depending on where you are heading to-- very much like those thick mangroves that, in one area, gnarl themselves into some painful patterns of brown to burnt shades but suddenly spring into a merry bundle of green as you go deeper into the forest. Watching a dozen of whitebellied sea eagles skillfully pick their prey from the greenish water, free from any harmful human interruptions, is a beautiful experience. Rayyan Haries, a Malaysian blogger, said the mangrove for-

est in the park is also a home to a species of wild dogs, apart from monkeys, snakes and other wildlife. The Kilim Geoforest Park was the final stopover of about 100 celebrities, journalists, bloggers, and tour operators from ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) who took part in the seven-day Asean Explore Quest Malaysia event hosted by Tourism Malaysia. The participants travelled from Kuala Lumpur, Perak and to Kedah (Langkawi). Langkawi provided the much-needed relief to the participants whose bodies

were pleasantly exhausted by days of fun games and discovery of Malaysia’s treasures-food, people and places. The group’s two-day experience in the island was first sparked up by the breathtaking Panorama Langkawi--where the sunset smeared the sky an explosion of orange and yellow. From the base station, gondolas slowly ascend to the Machincang range and back-allowing tourists to feast over the rich natural biodiversity and man-made environment in the area. “This is by far better than the cable cars in Sentosa,” said a

This year, the NAW celebration kicks off at the spacious SM City Davao Annex featuring Architectural exhibits and works of the ‘Forefathers of Davao Architecture’ and other projects of Davao Architects on December 8-10, 2013. This year’s theme “Aligning with the Global Skyline” not only speaks of what the architects have done to change the physical landscape of the country and the world in general, but also speaks of what the architects can do and give back to society. Following the architectural Exhibits which will commence with a cutting of the Ribbon at 10am on December 8, the architects, guests and SM City Davao personnel will have a short Welcome program led by Mall Manager Lynette Lopez. Joining her are UAP District Director of District D-1, Ar. Benjamin K. Panganiban Jr., UAP Kadayawan Davao Pres. Leonida D. A motorcade in the morning of December 10, 2013 around the city will significantly thrust the architect’s role and presence in the city. It will soon be followed by a Courtesy Visit to the Mayor’s Office and a Welcome Lunch. In the afternoon, the venue shifts back to the spacious SM City Davao Annex where intense competition among architectural schools in Davao City composed of the University of the Philippines, University of Mindanao and the Ateneo De Davao University will be held at the Event Center from 1pm onwards. This will include the announcement of winners for the on-the-spot rendering contests and a brief launching of the Gawad Kalinga Design Competition. The last day of this celebration on Saturday, December 14, will be a culmination in the form of a teleconference with other architects nationwide as the National Architecture Week is celebrated all over the country. The stellar rise of the Starmobile smartphone

The age of the smartphone is here. Packing more power per inch than desktop computers at times, these modern convenience tools keep people in touch through voice, text and now, even through email and video. Sadly though earlier smartphones tend to be on the more expensive side of the scale with prices that are higher than what a regular man from the street can afford. That was before the entry of the local mobile phone players and this is where Starmobile shines. Just barely a year before they launched, Starmobile now boasts of nearly a million strong and growing. “The future is mobile,” says Starmobile President Michael Chen. “Starmobile is right on pulse and leading the charge to make high tech available to everyone. Today, we share the good news that Starmobile aims to touch one million Filipinos by the end of the year, their lives bettered and made brighter by quality mobile phones and tablets at prices within reach.” Compared to high end smartphones, Starmobiles offerings are much more affordable, demoratizing the smartphone market and opening new ways for the average person to stay connected. Starmobile’s strong and competitive product line expands to include 12 more Android devices: three smartphones, five phablets to beef up the current Starmobile Diamond series and four tab-

‘1983’: A documentary on the unknown Ninoy THE Aquinos are the closest the Philippines has to a royal family, having produced two presidents in 25 years. But it all started with Ninoy, whose death 30 years ago this year changed the course of Philippine history. Ninoy’s political rise, imprisonment, and death are all well-known to Filipinos. But not the three quiet, vital years he spent in Boston with his family just before he died. Howie Severino and his team travel to Boston to produce a documentary on the Ninoy that few Filipinos know, the transformed family man who loved mahjong and doted on his youngest daughter Kris. It was a near-perfect, happy time for the Aquinos, but not enough to prevent Ninoy from returning home, where he was met by an assassin. What could have led

to that fateful decision? Howie visits the old Aquino home in a Boston suburb and tracks down Ninoy’s best friends, who remember a man who told green jokes but also his shy only son Noynoy who appeared out of place in America. It’s a personal journey for Howie himself, who went to college in Boston in those same years and as a homesick Pinoy, would visit Ninoy to listen to his stories.

Kris Aquino, the so-called “female Ninoy,” shares her memories of that time too as a child who loved America but who always knew that her father would go home to an uncertain fate. Join Howie Severino this Monday, December 9, 2013, as he uncovers the unknown Ninoy in this special documentary titled “1983”. IWitness airs every Monday right after Saksi on GMA7.

HE Marco Polo Davao’s Carlos G. Dominguez (CGD) cup 2013 shooting competition will fire off on Dec. 14 at the Team Shooting Range along Diversion Road in Maa with some 250 shooters taking part. Marco Polo Hotel director of security Col. Arnold Comoda, guesting in Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at NCCC Mall B3

Center yesterday, said Davao shooters will be joined by those coming from North Cotabato and General Santos City. “There were players from Bicol Region who joined us last year. They may be competing again in this upcoming event being organized as part of the 15th anniversary celebration of Marco Polo Hotel,” Comoda said. He also said cor-

porate shooters from Davao Light and Power Co., Alsons and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company also confirmed to participate. The shootfest features pistol, shotgun and mini rifle events in standard, classic and production division. The top seven shooters in each division will receive trophies and other prizes. He added, “This event aims to promote respon-

sible gun ownership and gun safety and foster camaraderie among shooters.” Registration fees are P600 (pistol) and P400 (mini rifle, shotgun) inclusive of lunch and a chance to win raffle prizes including one Cal. 40 Glock Pistol. Marco Polo Hotel also held a fun ride and fun run where proceeds were donated to victims of Typhoon Yolanda. [DSA]

The video, which was also uploaded to the team’s Facebook page, was titled: ‘’Seasons of Legend. Lakers announce Kobe’s return.’’ The video shows Bryant’s No. 24 jersey flapping in the wind. There is rain, sleet, snow and lightning for nearly 2 minutes. At one

point, his jersey tears. Sunshine breaks through the clouds, and the video fades to black. Finally, words flash across the screen that read, ‘’The Legend Continues...December 8.’’ ‘’That’s something special right there,’’ Lakers teammate Nick Young quipped when a reporter showed him the video on his smartphone in the locker room. How effective Bryant will be against top-tier competition is the last lingering question in his return. Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni said Bryant will likely be eased back into the lineup, though he declined to discuss how many minutes he will play in his first game. Asked what his expectations are for Bryant this

season, D’Antoni said, ‘’That he’ll be a dominant player.’’ ‘’He can play any way,’’ D’Antoni said. ‘’He can play below the rim, above the rim, the side of the rim. The guy can play any way. He’ll figure out how he’ll be effective and he’ll come at you with everything he’s got.’’ Bryant did not travel with the team to Sacramento. The 15-time All-Star hasn’t played since he was injured April 12 in a home win over the Golden State Warriors. He had surgery the following morning and was projected to take six to nine months to recover. Bryant’s return has seemed imminent since he began practicing last month. The 35-year-old guard has said that he could adjust his game and contribute something to the Lakers even if he’s not fully healthy when he finally steps on the court for his 18th NBA season.

CAMELLA DAVAO The best condo living experience is at Northpoint N

OTHING beats the value proposition of Northpoint, the British colonial themed condo development of Vista Residences in Davao City. This midrise condo community has the best location in north Davao, proximate to all modern living conveniences, yet it is ensconced within a green and natural environment that offers a respite away from the hustle bustle of city life. Northpoint sits on elevated land straddling two of the city’s main thoroughfares, Buhangin Road and JP Laurel Avenue, Bajada. It is at the heart of the city’s growth area where other modern developments are on the rise, and where Davao’s growing business and commercial district is taking shape. With its prime location, Northpoint is near to all major locators and public utilities, from the airport, seaport, worship places, banks, markets, hospitals, schools and universities, to the biggest and most modern malls, supermarkets, and shopping centers in the city. A shuttle is available to ferry to the outer gates homeowners who wish to take advantage of public transport that is available right outside the condo property. And because Northpoint has a central location, every day destinations are a few minutes’ ride or drive away. With its premier address, Northpoint is the most desirable place to live in Davao, attracting all types of homeowners, from newlyweds to start-up families, students, young professionals, expatriates, businesspeople, even

retirees and empty-nesters. Those who call Northpoint home enjoy the privilege of going home to a place they can truly have a break and relax with their loved ones. That’s because Northpoint’s condominiums are situated within a lush environment of robust plant life, olden Acacia trees, and hundreds of imported Caribbean pine trees. It is a veritable pine estate within the city, with its pine trees emitting fresh oxygen and a fragrant scent that permeate all over the condo property. Think of pine trees up to a hundred feet tall surrounding the condominiums and you can imagine the cool and naturally healthful ambiance of Northpoint, and that’s right smack in the heart of the city. The clubhouse Wakefield Manor features a fitness gym, multi-purpose hall with wide windows, cabanas and grill pits, playground, a kiddie pool, and a wellness swimming pool with saltwater. Around the property there are charming pocket gardens, lush nature park, and a jogging track that meanders around the trees. A 24/7 security system ensures the condo community is safe and secure at all times. These fine living amenities give Northpoint residents a convenient, stylish, and relaxing lifestyle. Northpoint will have its own lifestyle center that will feature a boutique hotel, hi-end retail stores, coffee shops, an open amphi-theatre, and other specialty stores. To rise on the hill that is a few steps away

from the condo gates, this commercial development will further enhance the elevated lifestyle of Northpoint residents. At present its landmark fixture, the White House, features a fine dining restaurant with a wine cellar. Northpoint is a land-

mark development of Vista Residences, the vertical marketing arm of Vista Land & Lifescapes, the largest homebuilder in the country. More information on Northpoint is available at Camella Office, Delgar Bldg., JP Laurel Ave., Bajada, Davao City, telephone 295-3973.
