Rotary aims polio eradication in PHL

HROuGH its PolioPlus program established in 1985, Rotary International (RI) District 3860 is embarking on a campaign for polio eradication in the Philippines. RI District 3860 governor-elect Edgar Chiongbian told media during a press briefing last Friday at Grand Regal Hotel, that the Rotary club will intensify the PolioPlus program in the country by giving free vaccines to children. “In every RI District, we have different teams to facilitate in the giving of vaccines, especially in far-flung areas to attain our ‘zero polio’ goal,” he explained.
To date, the organization has contributed more than uS$700 million -- a figure that will rise to more than $850 million by the time the world is certified free of polio. Rotary club members, a.k.a. Rotarians, provide valuable support in the field during National Immunization Days and work diligently to secure essential political and financial support from both polio-free and polio-affected governments. OMMODORE Isabelo Gador, outgoing commander of Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao (NFEM), said their support for the May 2013 elections will consist of deploying five vessels to transport precint count optical scan (PCOS) machines and Commission on Elections (Comelec) personnel to critical areas. Gador bared this during the weekly Kapihan sa Philippine Information Agency (PIA) last Friday, saying that the Navy, in-
cluding Marines, had been deployed two weeks before election day, adding that two vessels are in Sarangani to respond to areas between Sarangani, Balut Islands and neighboring areas while two vessels are in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Surigao and another in Cotabato City. “I would just like to clarify that we are under the Eastern Mindanao Command and are deployed in critical areas like Sarangani where the PCOS ma-

Youth group bares Team PNoy online survey manipulation
HE youth group Anakbayan revealed yesterday that certain senatoriables belonging to the ‘Team Pnoy’ slate are manipulating Internet surveys to create a false impression of their popularity and winnability. Vencer Crisostomo, national chairperson of Anakbayan, called the manipulation of survey results as part of what he called ‘Oplan 12-0’, a plan by the Aquino administration to rig the results of the 2013 elections. “With the Automated Election System, or AES, having been proven to conduct its electronic version ofdagdag-bawas in last year’s public tests, and the COMELEC refusing to review the computer program of the AES machines, there is no guarantee that the results spitted out by the AES reflect the actual will of the voters. In this scenario, the survey results are simply meant to condition the public into accepting the fraudulent outcome of the elections” he said. The youth group positively identified at
least one candidate, Ramon ‘Jun’ Magsaysay Jr., as conducting survey manipulation, with two other bets from the same slate as having been identified as ‘benefiting’ from the same operation. In an investigation conducted by Anakbayan’s Public Information Department, the online poll of a certain online news website was examined after Magsaysay rose to the top position in a matter of hours last week, with the two other bets under suspicion also surging to the within the top five positions. In the actual site of the said poll, majority of the ‘comments’ posted expressed support for Magsaysay. However, these ‘commentators’ were linked to profiles in the social networking site ‘Facebook’ which did not reflect the identity of a real human being. Some of the characteristics of the said ‘dummy accounts’ included: they were all created in the month of April, they contained no content except Magsaysay election paraphernalia, and that they did not have

DCWD explains water rate classification T
HE Board and Management of the Davao City Water District headed by Atty. Eliseo R. Braganza Jr., vice chairperson of the DCWD Board of Directors and in charge of public affairs, appeared before the City Council last week to explain the recently implemented classification of service connections that has the effect of doubling the rate for water consumption of commercial establishments in the city. In almost an hour presentation and open forum, Atty. Eliseo R. Braganza Jr. explained in detail the need to implement increases in water rate and to classify the same to generate funds for enhancement and expansion projects in order to cope with the city’s rapid economic progress. “We must understand that the improvement and expansion projects should be way ahead of the city’s economic and population growth and the only way to materialize it is to generate funds to finance massive development projects through increase in ac-
cordance with law.” According to Braganza, as early as the creation of water districts in 1973 by Presidential Decree 198, water districts are mandated by section 38 of the same law to implement a socialized pricing wherein service connections shall be classified in accordance to usage: commercial, industrial,V governmental and residential. The said law mandates to double the rate of commercial service connections as compared to the rate of residential or government customers per cubic meter. He said that the utility chose to defer the implementation of the classification in the past in order to help the city in encouraging more investors to come in Davao. However, Braganza stressed that the rate for residential and government connections will not be affected. ON’T look now, but “magic sugar,” an artificial sweetener banned by the Department of Health due to findings that it causes urinary bladder tumor in laboratory rats, is no longer banned. The DOH’s Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has revoked its BFAD Advisory No. 200005, which prohibited the importation, distribution and sale of“magic sugar,” which is chemically known as sodium cyclamate, cyclamic acid or calcium cyclamate. Now that the advisory has been lifted, the FDA will allow the use of the controversial ariticial sweetener. However, the agency requires importers, traders and distributors to apply for market authorization from the FDA “to ensure proper labeling and safe use of the product.” The FDA said its decision to lift the ban is based on Codex Standard 192-1995 on Additives Permitted for the use under Specified Conditions in Certain Food Categories or Individual Food Items and other provisions of CODEX General Standards on Food Additives (GSFA). It may be recalled that the Davao City Council, through the initiative of Councilor Pilar C. Braga, passed an ordinance banning the distribution and sale of magic sugar in the city. This is the reason Braga and her Council colleagues invited Ms Deborah Legaspi, a regional officer of the FDA, to its session last Tuesday to explain the agency’s reversal of its stand on the sweetener.

It appears that several reviews made by the World Health Organization (WHO)/Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and European Food Safety Authority reportedly showed that in more than 100 countries, including Europe, Canada and Australia, there have been no safety concerns among its millions of consumers. However, Braga said the lawmakers are not satisfied with the explanation, a reason they are not about to repeal the ordinance. She said the BFAD (old name of FDA) made waves when it declared that magic sugar is hazardous and harmful to health. Now, they are singing a different tune, said P. Braga, adding, “How inconsistent, how unbelievable, how doubtful!” Indeed, as Braga said, the better part of valor is prudence. We believe that the city council should not touch the Braga ordinance unless they are cocksure magic sugar is indeed safe. They ought to invite clinical experts to the session hall and get satisfactory answers to their questions. The FDA should not have lifted the ban just like that. Instead it should have given itself enough time to ascertain the facts. It appears that any delay in reversing the Council’s ordinance banning the sweetener would only inconvenience importers and traders affected by the ordinance who are engaged in business forprofit. It is better to err on the side of caution.

We miss out on the intangibles and finer things. We miss out on living and loving well.Sure, such sentiment may come across as very bourgeois but it is a better truth than giving primacy to function and constantly living in the bottom part of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. And it all begins with the mind. The mind improves with certain concrete actions that we take for granted. It has been said that one is known by the company he keeps. People we associate with significantly affect the progress or retrogress of our minds. If the person you’re with can only talk about the stresses of life, the injustices experienced, the opportunities missed, or heartbreaks survived, then he becomes a black hole wherein light and energy are consumed and forever trapped. Steer clear or risk getting sucked in. Of course, you can always be a sympathetic listener but if this is his way of life, try to run away faster than the speed of light because there is still so much living to be done. The mindset exerts influence on the “heartset”. A mind that does not seek light, more often than not, fails to live and love well. He does not live well because he becomes closed off to the infinite horizon of possibilities. He does not love well because he is not able to step out of himself. It is a given that we are in this world. There is an element of “thrownness” in our humanity. We are thrown into this world along with other human beings. It is thus that we cannot go on being insulated against the rest of the world. When you do not involve yourself with community nor have interests that involve others nor have something that is bigger than your small life, a part of your humanity shrivels in dryness. That is why when you say that you do not need to go to church because you pray privately and personally anyway,then you miss the point of being God’s family. When you say you do not care about politics because it is all the same anyway, then you must not be in society. When you do not do anything to improve yourself because there is no practical need, then better the earth swallow you up whole because you do injustice to a Creator who made you in His image and likeness. I have this set of friends that is fairly happy to get kicks from low-key wholesome fun. We meet almost every Friday for dinner, drinks, and interesting conversation. We come from different industries and backgrounds and yet we have found common ground. Talk runs the gamut of business, family, politics, religion, sports, cats, pretty lesbians, science, IT, bananas, masturbation, torn socks, and “lamaw”. you get the picture. We sing, dance, pray, play Taboo, teach, travel, attend trainings, and manage people and events. We also try to stay fit because a healthy mind is in a healthy body, unless you are Stephen Hawking. It is interesting because we have this certain multi-dimensionality that we enjoy. It is not just one thing but a whole conglomeration of life’s bits and pieces that are always joyful to share.None of the heaviness of the past and what ifs.None of the pretensions of social status. None of the preoccupations of the small self. But just a happy living of the present made a tad finer with wine and made infinitely hilarious with stories of “lamaw”.

ND why are foreign investors shying from the country and relocate to neighboring countries to establish their businesses? The primary reason is the presence of militant workers’ groups who have the rudeness to raise their proscribed demands and when employers failed them in their purpose would result to never-ending protests. That’s why the manufacturing sector suffers and the end result – massive unemployment. We also ought to know that what adds to the problem in society is bureaucratic red tape, which is prevalent in all government levels and the fragile peace and order condition. In the end, government always bears the brunt no matter whoever is in the levers of power. And the

It is no wonder that we have a population complaining of many years of bad government. The decent and desirable ones have no chance of being elected into public office. I have to say this over and over again. Politics Philippine-style is a game played by the rich and the powerful through dubious means if only to ensure the perpetuity of the culture of corruption. Again, unless voters change their bad habits, we do not see great changes in the near future. The future is in your hands, dear people. Make the right choice and vote wisely on May 13 midterm elections otherwise joblessness and poverty will remain until eternity.

The unspoiled and enchanting Balut Island of Kalamansig

ALAMANSIG, Sultan Kudarat- - One of the best-kept secrets in Mindanao beach lovers ought to explore this summer or anytime of the year can be found in this rustic remote fishing town – at an unspoiled and enchanting island facing the Celebes Sea sparsely inhabited by people. Locals call it Balut Island, although it also goes by the name Donauang Island, about an hour away by motorized boat from the poblacion. That gives Mindanao two fantastic Balut Islands, one here and the other in Sarangani town in Davao del Sur. unlike Balut Island in Sarangani with hundreds of households, Balut Island here hosts only 15 households of Manobo and Tausug ethnic tribes living in peaceful harmony. “We have beautiful diving and snorkeling spots around the island,” Datu Kiram Ajijul, village councilor of Barangay Paril, told MindaNews. Scuba divers from as far as Cebu City have gone around the diving sites in the island and found an amazing underwater ecosystem, he added. Balut Island, so named because of its egg-shaped form, is part of the Paril-Sangay Marine Protected Area. With turquoise waters fronting Balut Island’s stretches of white sand beachfront, swimming and sunbathing are all the more fun as big waves dash towards the coastlines. And the good thing is this: tourists can enjoy the island for free.

Just a word of caution though: do not bring pork because there are Tausugs in the island, believers of Islam. It’s also best to first coordinate with Alijul or the elders in Purok Mangga and register at the visitors’ logbook as courtesy to the locals. Purok Mangga is adjacent to Balut Island and about 10 minutes apart by motorized boat. Purok Mangga, which is inhabited by Tausugs, is itself already a beautiful beach destination with its white sand coastline and the enticing turquoise waters. The purok, and eventually Balut Island, would be easier to access by land once the Kalamansig-Palimbang road is completed. Here, sun-dried dilis (anchovies) can be bought as pasalubong for P100 per kilo (can be cheaper if you’re good in bargaining). It is a must to bring food and water to Balut Island or Purok Mangga, or tent if you’re planning to stay overnight, as there are no resorts or restaurants. Currently, although there are plans to build cottages for tourists in Purok Mangga, the area is a plain unspoiled island paradise. For now, boat ride, which can be rented for P1,500 the whole day, is the most convenient way to

ESTERD A y morning, I went to the capitol grounds which is a favorite site of locals who love to jog or do other forms of exercise. Since my left leg, which had been fractured, can no longer endure jogging continuously for several minutes, I had to alternate between running and brisk-walking. And while doing this routine I overheard an interesting conversation between two walkers who were ahead of me by an arm’s stretch. Their exchange goes something like this: Walker 1: Pare, will you vote for Migz Zubiri? Walker 2: Hmmm, I’m not sure, Pare, maybe yes, maybe no, not really sure. Walker 1: But he’s from Bukidnon, Pare. If he gets elected he can be of great help to the province. Imagine what the P200-million in pork barrel funds annually for each senator can do to our place. Walker 2: Honestly, Pare, I’m ashamed by what he did in 2007. Have you forgotten? He stole the vote from Senator Koko Pimentel! Besides, I hate the idea of giving pork barrel to lawmakers, that’s a huge source of graft. Walker 1: Pare, I respect your position on the pork barrel. But as for Migz, he has explained time and again that he was not a part of the fraud. He said he did not know that some people manipulated the results in Maguindanao in his favor. Walker 2: you believe that crap, Pare? Come on, you’re smarter than that. Walker 1: But can’t you see, Pare. He resigned his post after knowing the real story. He has delicadeza, hasn’t he? That’s the mark of a great leader, Pare. Walker 2: Come on, Pare, most people thought Migz resigned only after the evidence of fraud had become overwhelming. If he really has delicadeza, he should have not committed fraud. And I think resignation is not the right term, Pare. Can you give up something which was never yours in the first place? Walker 1: you’re so cynical, Pare. Can’t you see that Migz was so industrious while he was in the Senate? Walker 2: you may be right, Pare, about his industry (productiveness). yet that doesn’t make the fraud in Maguindanao an act of Heaven. A crime is a crime, period. Walker 1: All right, all right, I’m giving up on the Maguindanao issue. But did you hear Migz’s ad on TV that he will propose as a national program the health program of the provincial government of Bukidnon? I think you’re aware that thousands of poor people in the province have benefited under this program initiated by his father, who is running again for governor. Walker 2: What benefit, Pare? Haven’t you heard that several patients in Bukidnon’s provincial hospitals have complained about the lack of medicines and poor services? Walker 2: And one more thing, Pare: Why is the face of Migz’s father prominently etched on the PhilHealth cards given to the people? Is he using his own money for this program? HE richness of the country’s coral reefs is the main focal point of the observance of the Month of the Ocean (MOO) this May, Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje announced Friday. Paje said the Department of Environment
and Natural Resources (DENR) has lined up various activities for this year’s celebration, which falls under the theme “Ang Bahura ay Kagubatan sa Karagatan, Ating Pangalagaan!” (The Coral Reefs are the Forests of the Seas, Let us Protect Them). “The focus on coral reefs highlights the premium that we put on our coral reefs, which protect our coastlines naturally and give tremendous economic benefits to millions of Filipinos particularly through fisheries and tourism,” said Paje, who represented the Philippines at the Sustainable Ocean Summit held in Washington, D.C. from April 22 to 24. He said the iconic species of MOO 2013 is the thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus) that can be regularly seen in Monad Shoal in Cebu’s Malapascua Island. “Classified as a vulnerable species, this predator’s presence is an indicator of the reef ecosystem’s good health,” Paje said. The Philippines is home to Palawan’s Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, which was declared as a World Heritage Site by the united Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (uNESCO) and a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention. The country is also home to the Apo Reef Natural Park in Occidental Mindoro, considered the second largest contiguous coral reef system in the world, next to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. These two world-renowned reefs, along with the other coral reefs in the country’s 240 million hectares of water, and the biodiversity that thrives within them, provide food security to Filipinos, who source 80 percent of their
protein requirement from the oceans. One of the highlights of the month-long celebration will be the launch of the DENR’s Sustainable Coral Reef Ecosystem Management Program (SCREMP) on May 20. The SCREMP is a national program where the protection and rehabilitation of the coral reef ecosystems will be conducted with a strategic, sustainable and ecosystem-based approach. The program includes the awarding of winners of a photo competition featuring the underwater beauty of the Philippines’ coral reef ecosystem. The Coastal Law Enforcement Manual, a guidebook for multisectoral groups enforcing laws to protect the country’s coastal and marine resources, will also be launched. A memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the promotion of responsible diving will be signed between the DENR and the Reef-World Foundation during the SCREMP launch. A separate MOA, with the local government of Boracay as additional signatory, will be signed on May 30 to launch the implementation of the foundation’s Green Fins project on the island. The MOO will also see diving enthusiasts and coral reef advocates participate in the “Linis Bahura: Sisid para sa Kalikasan 2013,” where they will collect crown of thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) from the coral reefs along the Verde Island Passage in Pagkilatan, Batangas. This kind of starfish is known to destroy entire coral reef populations by feeding on live coral tissues. Information materials on the richness of coral reef ecosystems, their economic importance, and the various ways
to conserve and sustain them will be displayed or posted at all MRT-3 stations along EDSA for the whole month of May. A group of artists from the Dolphins Love Freedom group will restore the year-old Biodiversity Mural Wall of the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center (NAPWC) in Quezon City. The Wall was painted last year during the celebration of MOO 2012. For one month starting May 15, an interactive walking tour promoting 22 ecotourism sites established under the DENR’s Integrated Coastal Resources Management Project (ICRMP) will be exhibited at the NAPWC. On May 19, coral reef advocates will hold a bike parade from Quezon City to Roxas Boulevard to drum up awareness on the state of the country’s coral reefs. Finally, on May 29-30, the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion (SSME) Sub-committee on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) will hold a meeting on initiatives on establishment and management of MPAs within the region. The meeting will also see the launch of the State of the Coral Triangle Report, detailing the state of coral reef ecosystems and resources within the Coral Triangle. The Philippines is an active member of the six-country Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security. The Coral Triangle is known to contain 40 percent of the world’s coral reef fish species and 75 percent of the world’s coral species, 53 percent of these were found to be resilient to climate change. MOO was first observed in 1999 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 57. (PNA)

A
couple of Chris—Ellis of Ginebra San Miguel owns and Tiu of Rain or Shine--became the first twin rookie winners of the annual PBA All-Stars sideshow and a bullet-fast Jonas Villanueva kept his Obstacle Challenge for a fourth time. The Chris, Chris and Jonas show were the main highlight of the entrée event to the 2013 PBA All Star Weekend on Friday night in Digos City, Davao del Sur. Chris Ellis of Ginebra San Miguel flew high enough to win the Slam Dunk title and found no need for two of his anticipated routines while fellow rookie Chris Tiu of Rain Or Shine equaled the all-time best score on his way to being crowned Three-Point King. The more popular Chris, Rain or Shine’s Tiu fired a record-tying 21 points to win the ThreePoint-Shooutout over KG Canaleta of Air21 (18) and JV Casio of Alaska (13). Tiu, who joined the drills of Ateneo de Davao university’s boys varsity squad to prepare for the contest, sank all but five money balls including the punctuating one on rack 6 which he sank after taking a second look at the giant screen to check how much time he got left. When he buried the record-tying money ball, he spread his arms in triumph. Tiu thanked his former teammate at Ateneo, Miggy Solitaria, now coach of the Ateneo de Davao university high school squads, for a morning workout at Genesis 88 Gym owned by the Escandor family of The Royal Mandaya Hotel. “I asked Miggy if I can work out in a private gym and he told me I can join his team’s drills,” Tiu told Edge Davao. Tiu did not just join the drills. He shoot a segment of his television show “Tiu-torials” with the Ateneo Blue Knights and delivered a five-minute pep talk.
He took 15 minutes after that for a shooting practice and he felt good with his rhythm. “I felt good, so I figured I might have a chance. I just played it calmly and prayed for God to give me strength. When I shot 17 in the first round I said it must be a sign since that’s my jersey number,” said Tiu who tied Allan Caidic in 1991, James yap (2006) and Will Antonio (2009) for the best score ever. Tiu joined Jasper Ocampo (1998) and Jimmy Alapag (2003) as rookie winners of the rainbow contest. The other Chris, Ginebra’s Ellis, picked in the first round this year by the Ginebra Gin Kings over the vastly popular Tiu, overcame a one-point final round deficit in the final round over teammate Elmer Espiritu after his first slamoff attempt—a windmill jam off a backboard toss—malfunctioned before completing that routine in his second try. He got a 44 from the judges composed of host Governor Douglas Cagas, sportscaster Vitto Lazatin, PBA Press Corps president Musong Castillo, and former PBA stars Bong Ravena and Jerry Codinera. Espiritu meantime got a 45 with a ‘Lob City’ dunk but he ran out of time in his second final round dunk when he failed to convert several attempts of a routine that originated from a pass from the gallery by San Mig Coffee’s Mark Barocca to settle with a regulation 25. Without much pressure for his final dunk, Ellis did a Vince Carter 2000 throwdown coming from a toss from Cliff Hodge before sinking his forearm inside the cylinder and he hang in there for a few seconds as the packed Davao del Sur Coliseum erupted in cheers. That final throwdown netted a 49 but was enough to win it in an anticlimactic ending. He became the fifth
rookie to win the dunk title after Vergel Meneses (1992), Joey Mente (2001), Brandon Cablay (2003), and Gabe Norwood (2009). The heavily-favored Ellis had a pair of perfect 50s in the elimination round first with a Jordanesque cradle dunk and an off-the backboard windmill jam. Ellis paid tribute to one of the league’s best dunkers Samboy Lim after his win. Asked why he did not do his promised free throw line and East Bay Funk dunks, Ellis said there was no need. “I watched the dunks and I kind of felt there was no need to do those dunks. I’ll reserve it for next year,” Ellis, nicknamed “Air Force Ellis”, said. Petron’s Arwind Santos settled for third despite a difficult under-the-roof pick-up slam he executed by placing the ball on the floor while his back is against the rim, picked the ball up and turned around for a two-handed rim-rattling jam. “Di nila na-appreciate ang hirap gawin ng dunk na yun. Walang buwelo yun (The judges did not appreciate how difficult that dunk is. I didn’t have the luxury of a take-off),” Santos told this writer after the contest. In the Obstacle Challenge, three-time champion Jonas Villanueva added another title after a flawless final round run of 26.3 seconds besting Ellis who placed second in 28.1 and Pamboy Raymundo of Talk N’ Text who finished third in 30.3. Villanueva’s time is his personal best and admitted he thought there was little challenge left after Ronjay Buenafe pulled out. “Mas napahirap pa pala dahil kay Pamboy at Chris (It got even more difficult with Pamboy and Chris).” The main event of this year’s All-Stars will be played tonight with the PBA All Stars facing Smart Gilas Pilipinas.

Iron Man 3 box office powers toward $310 M IRON MAN 3 is not going to be big. It is big.
The question is, how big? Even before hitting theaters in the Us, the Robert Downey Jr.-Gwyneth Paltrow superhero sequel has banked nearly $308 million from overseas audiences, per its studio. The film’s fast international start—it debuted in the United Kingdom, south Korea, Australia and other countries last weekend—has sent its domestic stock soaring. “The range of openingweekend [projections] for Iron Man 3 was in the $125 million range,” Hollywood. com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian said via email, “but now I would say the bottom end would be $140 million.” Or higher. The latest tracking numbers had Iron Man 3 locking in on $150 million. Exhibitor Relations’ Jeff Bock said he could see $165 million or even $170 million. “Let the summer madness begin,” Bock said in an
email. The first Iron Man movie rewrote expectations for supposed A-minus-list superheroes, scoring nearly $100 million over three days in 2008. Iron Man 2, released two years later, only fell short versus thensky-high expectations, launching to $128.1 million. A debut of around $150 million would put Iron
Man 3, which kicks off summer-movie season when it opens in some theaters as early as tonight, in the neighborhood of The Dark Knight, The Hunger Games and spider-Man 3. And then there’s The Avengers. The superhero team-up, which featured Downey’s armored hero, hit such an unprecedented number last May—zooming past
$200 million in its opening weekend—that it’s not expected to be beat anytime soon. Even if Iron Man 3 did just that in several countries overseas last weekend. “We have to be careful not to read too much into those blockbuster international numbers,” Dergarabedian said. PBA Stalwarts repulse Greats 112-105 By Neil Bravo

ETIRED PBA star Kenneth Duremdes summoned his MVP form to lead the PBA Stalwarts past PBA Greats 112-105 in the 2013 PBA All-Stars showdown at the Davao del Sur Coliseum in Digos City on Friday night. Duremdes, the 1998 PBA MVP and 10-time All-Star, fired 19 points but it was his leadership that preserved the win for the Stalwarts in the face of a late surge by the Greats who trailed by as much as 18 in the second quarter and earned for him the
game’s MVP honors. The Stalwarts, behind Duremdes, Jervy Cruz and the sweet-shooting Mark Macapagal, broke away from a 14-15 deficit late in the first quarter with a 21-6 run to end the first period with a 14-point spread 35-21. Back to back threepoint hits by Chris Tiu and Macapagal and a layup by Duremdes inflicted more damage in the second period as the Stalwarts went up to its biggest lead, 47-29, midway into the second period. The Greats got back with a mild rally as Joe
Devance and Jerry Codinera conspired to narrow the gap to 9 at the turn, 62-51. Davao boy PJ Simon, Paul Lee and Devance pressed the pursuit in the second half and trimmed the lead to four, but that proved to be their last stand as Willie Miller quashed the rally in the final minute with a booming triple. Macapagal, who had 11 in the first canto, matched Duremdes’ 19-point output with
Ronald Tubid adding 19 and Cruz and Miller had 16. Simon, who scored 11 in a third quarter rally, topscored for the Greats with 22 while Devance backed him up with 15 and the league’s retired ace slasher Rodney Santos had 14. Fans mobbed the league’s acstive stars and retired former stars after the match. Reports said Ronald Tubid lost his bag in the midst of the onrushing crowd who swept the floor at the buzzer to seek photos and autographs of their idols.
