two-hour fire hit the Davao Mental Hospital (DMH) along Jose P. Laurel st. at 6:30 yesterday morning, but firefighters put out the blaze by 8:30 AM, even as hospital staff rushed to secure 197 patients. No one was report-

proper care from a rehabilitation center while the rest of the patients will be accommodated in the multi-purpose hall of DMH,” he explained. Food assistance for the patients, staff and doctors arrived after the incident.

Vilareiz and Reynan Librado, business bureau licensing officer, removed all huge billboards advertising cigarettes along the stretch of Quimpo boulevard, barangays Maa and buhangin. “This is actually a national law, but the asTF is making sure that the city complies with all antismoking laws, including the banning of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship,” Villariez explained. It also prohibits smoking in public c o n v e y a n c e s , accommodation and entertainment establishments, enclosed and partially enclosed public places, cemeteries, markets and terminals. Indoor designated smoking areas in business establishments is prohibited, and if an establishment wants to have an outdoor designated smoking area, it should secure a permit from the anti-smoking task force. “This way, we will be able to send a message to the people who placed the signs that this is not allowed in the city,” she said.

Deadly Moore tornado tops the scale at Ef-5 C
omplete and utter destruction in some parts of Moore, Okla., in the wake of yesterday’s deadly tornado confirms the twister was a rare eF-5 — the top of the tornado rating scale, the National Weather service announced on Wednesday (PHL Time) storm survey crews reached the hardest-hit neighborhoods of Moore this afternoon as lightning and hail continued to batter the devastated city. The survey process is subjective, but team members rely on a checklist of 28 tornado damage indicators to estimate wind speeds and the degree of damage. The National Weather service’s (NWs) four survey teams also found several areas of damage rated as eF-4 along the tornado’s path, according to the Facebook page of the NWs office in Norman, Okla. The preliminary ranking could still be revised in the coming days, as
crews continue to assess the damage. Tornadoes are ranked on the Enhanced Fujita scale. an eF-0 rating is reserved for minor damage, and an eF-5 is considered the most severe, with winds topping 200 mph (322 km/h). The Moore tornado excavated a path up to 1.3 miles (2 kilometers) wide along a 17-mile-long (27 km) stretch of central Oklahoma, the NWs said. The twister touched down 4.4 miles (7.1 km) east of Newcastle at 2:45 p.m. CDT and ended 4.8 miles (7.7 km) east of Moore, a southern suburb of Oklahoma City, at 3:35 p.m. CDT. At least two airlines have already cancelled flights from Taiwan to boracay, with an airport official saying he expects one other airline to follow suit. “We have temporarily suspended our daily charter service between Kalibo (boracay) and Taipei at the request of the charter agent,” a Zest Air statement read. The Kalibo International Airport (KIA) is the closest portal to the resort island of boracay which allows direct flights from Taiwan, Korea and China, among others. Zest Air’s statement comes as Taipei and Manila are embroiled in a dispute over the fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman by the Philippine Coast Guard. President benigno Aquino III has apologized for the incident, but Taiwan went on to impose sanctions until a formal government apology. These sanctions in-
clude a ban on hiring new Filipino workers and recalling its envoy. HE provincial government has given the Indigenous women of barangay Macgum in New Corella town, this province, the opportunity to revive the dying art of traditional dressmaking and beadworks. Realizing that the craft of making native clothing is fast becoming a thing of the past, the province conducted a livelihood training that taught mothers

HE Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) urges contractors and implementing local government units (LGUs) to complete project construction by June 2014. MRDP is a five-year special project under the Department of Agriculture (DA) and jointly funded by the World bank, the national government and the LGUs. Launched in 2007, the program was supposed to end December 2012 but was given a two-year extension by the National Economic and Development authority board and expected to end by December of 2014. “As MRDP implementation is nearing its homestretch, we urge all contractors and concern LGUs to fast track project construction and must ensure that it will be completed before June 2014,” said program director Lealyn Ramos. “We are also reminding LGUs and contractors engaged in the program of their commitment to finish the project on the agreed timeline otherwise
they should complete the remaining works at their own expense,” Ramos stressed. The program implements rural infrastructure, livelihood, and natural resource management projects covering 225 towns and 26 provinces across Mindanao. bulk of these projects are on rural infrastructure which to date the program has a total of 489 rural infrastructure projects of which 239 are completed while 205 are on-going and 45 are at the procurement stage. Majority of the infrastructure projects are farm-to-market roads (FMR) consist of 371 FMR with a total length of 1,365.67 kilometers and costing P3.4 billion. This is followed by potable water systems with a total of 51 projects amounting P305 million. The program is also implementing 26 single lane bridges with a total length of 870.85 liner meters costing P270 million while 24 communal irrigation systems is also being implemented servicing 6,497 hectares and with a
total cost of 569 million. There are also 17 other rural infrastructure projects such as solar dryers and warehouses amounting to P24 million. Ramos said completing the project by mid-2014 would give the program management ample time to evaluate its impact and prepare for the transition from MRDP to PRDP (Philippine Rural Development Program), which is the former’s scale-up version with nationwide expanded coverage. While the program is urging implementing LGUs and contractors to fast track project implementation Ramos stressed that concerned parties should adhere to quality standards, as they will also be held accountable if it will be found to be of poor quality. “We are open and responsive to any complaints from project beneficiaries as this is one way of holding our officials accountable and at the same time promote greater transparency and accountability,” Ramos said. HY give tax perks to businesses that are cashing in on the tourism windfall? This was the point of Finance secretary Cesar Purisima in a statement on Wednesday, May 22, when he thumbed down the appeal to reconsider tax perks for the owners of hotels and resorts in key tourism areas in the country -- Metro Manila, Cebu City, Mactan Island, and boracay island. “Income tax holidays for already very profitable hotels serves only to further enrich a select few rather than improve the overall environment for tourism investments,” Purisima said in response to the open letter to President Aquino from The Philippine hotel Federation, inc. (PhFi). Purisima preferred to funnel funds meant to boost tourism into infrastructure projects. The Aquino government has an ongoing infrastructure program that aims to boost air, sea, and land connectivity to tourist destinations. several airport projects in the provinces are being rolled out in the next 3 years. “We’d rather collect income taxes and invest in better infrastructure that will further attract more entities to invest in the Philippines,” Purisima said. Swim across Sarangani Bay in less than 3 hours

aasiM, sarangani --The open ocean swimming race from Maasim to Glan remains to be the much-awaited sports event in the eight-year history of sarangani bay Festival. A total of 50 swimmers will again invade sarangani bay this May 24 to kickoff sarangani bay Festival, the biggest beach party in Mindanao. Will a team log the shortest time ever in the history of swim-acrossthe-bay? 2006 swim organizer Giuseppe Chew described the race as “the sarangani bay ultimate challenge.” It has a distance of about 15 kilometers. Governor Migs Dominguez said the swim challenge is “one way (also) of helping our swimmers to be able to compete not only in swimming pools but also in international swimming competition offshore.” “This is not only about winning but also about finishing and conquering,” he added. On May 18, 2006, only three teams out of six entries finished the first-ever swim across sarangani bay witnessed by thousands of spectators. The Dadiangas Torpedoes of General santos City (4:05:18 hours) won by just two minutes ahead of MJ Powerpines of Maasim (4:07:12 hours). The

Fire at the mental hospital
A
NYTHING can happen in a nuthouse, considering what those who reside in it are capable of doing. What is news about the fire that hit the Davao Mental Hospital along J.P. Laurel Avenue in Davao City is that it happened almost a century after, if it is true, that the mostly-wooden structure was built in 1918. Levity aside, the fire was, as one idiom writer calls it “an accident waiting to happen.” Indeed, the hospital has been decrepit and a fire hazard for sometime now. No less than Dr. Leopoldo vega, director of the southern Philippines Medical Center (sPMC), of which the old hospital is an adjunct, admitted that the bureau of Fire Protection had recommended the rewiring of the building as it now seems faulty wiring was a likely cause of the fire. However, rewiring cost was prohibitive at the time and it was deemed more practical to build a new structure with an entire-

The prime property was donated by the eminent philanthropist Francisco villa-abrille Juna together with the adjacent lot granted to the davao Chinese high school, according to civic leader, lawyer Leoncio “Nonoy” Villa-Abrille, grandson of don Francisco, who said that the lot was first used as site of the Davao General Hospital, the only public hospital then in the old undivided Davao province. There is definitely a need for our authorities to review the use of the lot, considering the skyrocketing prices of real estate in the city. To begin with, do we really need a mental hospital in the middle of downtown Davao? That’s food for thought.

The anger of the Taiwanese cannot be so easily appeased
T
HE recent killing of a Taiwanese fisherman by the Philippine Coast Guard has led to diplomatic tensions between Taiwan and Philippines, spawning a series of sanctions levied on the Philippine government by Taiwan. The sanctions include freezing all applications from Filipino workers seeking employment in Taiwan, an action that many Filipino workers cannot accept. Many Filipinos have raised questions over why we cannot accept the apology from Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Chairman Amadeo R. Perez, who was authorised by the President of the Philippines benigno aquino iii. While it may seem emotional for Taiwanese fishermen to burn the Philippine flag in front of the Philippine representative office in Taipei, it is quite understandable that the nation would burst into such fury when another country takes the life of a local citizen. It is the cultural bond between ethnic groups. And it would happen in any country. The anger flared when the Philippine government initially refused to apologise for the incident, following the murder, calling it an act of “self-defence” because the vessel was about to ram its ship. The term “self-defence” is sometimes tricky, because it can also be used as a term to justify an alleged murder, as has been the case with many controversial trials over the past years. Whether the Taiwanese

FOREIGN COMMENT By Manny ValdehueSa vessel was attempting to ram the Philippine Coast Guard or not, the weaponless boat was clearly mismatched. In any case, killing an unarmed man, even when he projected threatening behaviour, is without doubt a significant act. In the 21st century, with better technology and more advanced weapons, military weapons should be used with extreme care as the possibility of war is forever present. That is why, during the Diaoyutais row between Japan and Taiwan, only water canons were used. Premier Jiang Yi-huah rejected a subsequent apology statement that was issued far past the 72-hour ultimatum deadline, calling it insincere and ambiguous. What the government could not accept was that the Philippine government called the act unintended and unfortunate. Holding a picture of the bullet-riddled vessel, Jiang lambasted such a notion, noting that the gunner was clearly strafing. In disbelief he said, “How can you call this 51-bullet hole boat an unintended shooting?” On the night when the Philippines top envoy to Taiwan, Antonio basilio, met with the foreign minister, he presented four different versions of a response statement one after another from the Philippine government - an act that raised questions about their sincerity.
The final version of the statement did not promise, as its previous version did, the penalty of a fine, leave of service or imprisonment for the perpetrators. Taiwan demanded that the Philippine government issue a formal apology, promise to levy a punishment on the perpetrators and open bilateral fishery agreement talks. Taiwan also asked for “national compensation” because it was a so-called act of negligence by a government body that allowed such behaviour. The Philippines’ response, however, only stated that the victims of the family will be compensated by donations from Filipinos. What Taiwan would like to see is a face-to-face, sincere apology from the Philippine government where they promise clearly and explicitly to provide a national compensation for the victim’s family and punishment for the perpetrators. The Philippines, thus far, has been ambiguous with its responses at best. That, alone, is enough to prove their insincerity. And it is because of this reason that Taiwan is compelled to conduct retaliatory measures to exert pressure on the Philippine government. it may not be fair to some Filipino workers, but punishment always comes at a price. The Taiwan government will at all cost do whatever it can to protect the sovereignty of the country and the safety of its people - which any nation would do. (The China Post/ANN)

We pray for its success and wish to help accordingly. Thus, we would to express our concern about a very real threat to its success, namely: the patronage system known as Pork barrel or Priority development assistance Fund. events of late and front-page revelations of its cavalier handling at high places portend frustration and likely failure ahead. so let us face the issue squarely. Too long has Pork corrupted our polity: legislatures, bureaucracy, electorate. It is like a festering sore upon the body politic that doesn’t heal because of the political maggots that feed on it. Everyone knows that Pork serves mainly to feed the vanity and political agenda of its users. That it is used to manipulate the poor and the impressionable among our electorate is reprehensible. This cynical scheme to extract benefits from the public service by frying the constituency in its own fat should have no place in a society whose Constitution implores Divine Providence for guidance. It is time we get rid of this major corruptor of our democracy. We just haven’t matured enough or learned enough to handle abuses of this kind. Pork is not evil per se; everyone knows there is Pork in other societies. but in them its handling is protected by a regime of transparency and accountability that works. It works because it is anchored on an ethic backed by the Rule of Law. To abuse Pork in those societies isn’t worth it. For in addition to a system of checks and balances that won’t tolerate it, they have a hard core of vigilant, no-nonsense citizens who will not forgive betrayers of the public trust. such is the force of established tradition and culture which, sad to say, we Filipinos have yet to institutionalize. Every parent knows the folly of giving large allowances to kids or to persons with immature impulses; they’ll only squander the money or blow it on unworthy causes. As with parents, so with society—especially a relatively young society like ours whose institutions are very much still a work-in-progress. It is folly for our society to slice huge portions of our scarce resources and let people of uncertain integrity or legitimacy handle them—not especially in an age of palusot, where impunity seems fashionable, and where elections can be bought. Even duly sworn officials seem helpless against temptation, too readily violating their oath. Under these circumstances, the better part of valor is to withdraw the excessive Pork allocations and use these—perhaps P50 billion or more!—for the purposes of your reform agenda. Accordingly, as our electorate prepares to put a new Congress in place by May, we urge you, Mr. President, to disown and abolish the Pork barrel system. Now, not later! We ask that (1) the funds earmarked for it be turned over to our communities through their respective local development councils (sec 106-115, R.a. 7160); and (2) that this be effected using a formula similar to the one apportioning internal revenue allotments (IRA) for barangay, municipality, city, and province (sec. 284288).

On Tuesday, the CA stopped the Department of Justice (DOJ) from filing a P5-billion tax case against Uy and broker Jorlan Capin Cabanes. The appellate court’s 10th Division issued a temporary restraining order (TRO), stopping the Justice department from filing with the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) charges against the respondents for violation of the Tariff and Customs Code. The multi-billion tax case is considered to be the biggest instituted by the DOJ against alleged smuggling and tax evasion violators under the Aquino administration. Justice secretary Leila de Lima ordered the filing of charges against Dennis Uy and Cabanes before the CTA on April 24 over Phoenix’s “non-payment of excise and value-added taxes and non-submission of import documents such as invoices and bills of lading.” The filing of the charges by the DOJ in effect set aside the November 16, 2012, resolution signed by Prosecutor General Claro Arellano that dismissed the same complaint against the two respondents. The resolution signed by de Lima read: “With all these discrep-
ancies, inconsistencies and variance in the documents submitted by respondents visà-vis the documents submitted by the complainant relative to the shipments in question, we cannot sustain the finding in our resolution of 16 November 2012 that respondent’s documents belied and negated the complainant’s allegations.” However, in a resolution promulgated on May 9, the appellate court ordered the DOJ not to file the case as it gave weight to the claim of Cabanes that they were never afforded the opportunity to amply respond to the new evidence introduced in the complaint. It was Cabanes who went to the appellate court and sought a TRO from the DOJ to stop it from enforcing its resolution. The TRO, in effect, also covered Uy. “It was an exercise of a prevailing right sanctioned by law and existing jurisprudence,” explained Zorilla. The TRO was immediately assailed by the department of Finance in a statement. “TROs like this one effectively prevent the government from prosecuting smuggling. Our courts and court processes should not be used by a few to block our progress in enforcing customs laws, and creating a level playing field for all,” Finance secretary Cesar V. Purisima said
in a statement. “This unnecessarily slows down the process but nevertheless, we will not allow anyone to distract us from our continuing drive against smuggling.” Zorilla, however countered Purisima’s statement saying the oil company also wanted a level playing field. “As an industry player, we also want a level playing field given the massive investments owing to our investors and public shareholders,” he said. Creating a level field, according to Zorilla, does not necessarily authorize the violation of the rights of any citizen, including that of respondent (Dennis Uy). The charges stemmed from the complaint of the bureau of Customs under then-Customs Commissioner Angelito Alvarez. They were filed on May 5, 2011, under the Run After The smugglers (RaTs) program of the boC. According to the complaint, the boC claimed the oil company imported gasoline and other oil products with a combined dutiable value of P5,981,212,832 between June 2010 and April 2011. Of the P5 billion, some P459 million worth of imported petroleum products brought in between June and December 2010 cleared Customs without any supporting import entry declarations.
Police sr. supt. Perpetuo Macion, head of the PNP 11 Regional Operations and Plans Division head, did tell Edge Davao that their data are based on the implementation dates from January 13 to May 18. Macion said the following were the areas where the violators were apprehended: Regional head quarters (RHQ) only one was arrested; Davao City Police Office (DCPO), a total of 134 violators of whom 124 were arrested, six at large and four neutralized (killed during the actual apprehension for resisting arrest); 46 in Davao del Norte Police Office (DDNPO) where 42 were arrested and four
were neutralized; 43 in davao del sur Police office (ddsPo) where 41 were arrested and 2 are at large; 15 in Davao Oriental Provincial Police Office (DOPPO) where 13 were arrested, one at large and one was neutralized; and 35 in Compostela Valley Province Police Office (CVPPO) where 33 were arrested and two was neutralized. He added that the total number of firearms confiscated were 155; 53 of which are high-powered (HP) and 102 were low-powered (LP) firearms. He bared the following areas where the firearms were confiscated: RHQ one LP; DCPO a total of 42 firearms of which
6 HP and 36 LP; 38 in DDNPO, 10 HP and 28 LP; 25 in ddsPo, 7 HP and 18 LP; 15 in DOPPO, 6 HP and 9 LP; and 34 CVPPO where 24 HP and 10 LP. Macion also added that they confiscated a total of 153 deadly weapons, 117 bladed, 30 explosives, 6 of which were homemade guns (paltik). A total of 133 cases were filed in the following areas: RHQ, one; DCPO, 60; ddNPo, 32; dsPPo, 11; DOPPO; 12: and CVPPO 17. Macion said they will continue to establish Comelec checkpoints in different parts of the region until the implementation of the gun ban ends on June 12.

total of P7.4 billion worth of projects for the year 2013 is on the agenda of of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in region 11. Regional director Mariano Alquiza told media that P3.02 billion of the budget is allocated for 29 projects being undertaken by the regional office while the remaining projects are being implemented by different DPWH engineering districts in the region. Alquiza added that the region has already accomplished 10.74 percent of the on-going projects. He added that 56 projects are on-going in Davao del Norte worth P474 million coming from the total budget of
the region. Meanwhile, Alquiza bared that DPWH 11 ranks No.2 in the whole country in terms of implementing the pre-construction stage of the 2013 or current projects and is No.4 in the stage of project construction. “Pre-construction involves activities from survey to preparations of plans and the conduct of biddings while the construction stage involves the actual or the on-going implementation of the projects,” he explained. Alquiza also confirmed that DPWH 11 is ranked No. 3 nationwide in completing the pre-construction stage of carry-over projects and No. 1 in the construction stage. “Carry-over projects
are projects in the years 2011 and 2012 that are being implemented this year,” he said. Recently, to boost the region’s tourism industry, DPWH 11 was the recipient of a P1.487 billion project under the Department of Tourism (DOT)-DPWH convergence program involving 15 priority projects. “All these DOT-DPWH convergence projects are on-going and we have already achieved 16.81 percent accomplishment,” Alquiza said. The only problems that the DPWH encounters in project implementation are the issues on road right of way (RROW) and peace and order due to the demands of revolutionary taxes by rebel groups on contractors.

EDMOND, Washington (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp unveiled the “Xbox One” on Tuesday, its first new gaming console in eight years, and its strongest push so far to dominate consumers’ living rooms with an array of exclusive media content. The Xbox One took four years to develop and will be the launchpad for a “Halo” live-action video series produced by steven spielberg. It will be sold worldwide “later this year,” games unit chief Don Mattrick told reporters at an event at the software company’s campus near seattle, without providing details on timing or pricing. The device will also be the first platform to release the next installment in activision blizzard inc’s blockbuster shooter franchise, “Call of Duty”. Microsoft hopes its third-generation Xbox console will attract video game fans who are increasingly sampling games on mobile devices, while also becoming a hub for living room entertainment. The new device interacts with a television, responds to voice and gesture commands, includes group video calling on skype, 15 exclusive game titles and original programming content. The Xbox One will chiefly compete with Nintendo Co’s new Wii U and sony Corp’s forthcoming Playstation 4 for a bigger slice of the $65 billion-a-year computer game market. Microsoft did not refer to the new gadget as a “console” but rather an entertainment system, signaling its renewed focus on making the Xbox a sort of window for media and entertainment content, said Forrester Research’s James McQuivey.

The device will have 8 gigabytes of memory and comes with a new-generation Kinect sensor that communicates a user’s voice and gesture commands to the console. The original Kinect was launched in 2010 and sold separately. bundling the Kinect -- which costs $100 in the current version -- may inflate the Xbox One’s overall price tag. AHOO! has begun talks with the popular blogging platform Tumblr about an acquisition or strategic alliance, the technology website AllThingsD reported on Friday, May 17. The Dow Jonesowned website said Yahoo! is eyeing the move to attract more users from the key 18 to 24-year-old age bracket, and that the Internet pioneer sees Tumblr as one of the “coolest” sites. The report said talks between the two firms were “serious” but that nothing had been finalized. Yahoo! has been looking at a range of acquisitions since Marissa Mayer took over as chief executive last year and vowed to
revive the company, which has faded in the face of competition from Google. AllThingsD said Tumblr could fetch as much as $1 billion, and that its current valuation based on investments is believed to be in the range of $800 million. The report said Tumblr is interested in “strategic” investments, which could mean some kind of alliance. Yahoo! recently failed in a bid to take over the online video site Dailymotion after the French government, which owns a stake, quashed the deal. The California firm is now reported to be interested in another video website, Hulu.

In his last ring appearance on November 3, 2012, Herrera scored a stunning 1st round knockout of Jorge Pimentel, showing that his eight round unanimous decision loss to Fernando Garcia on July 21 last year had not affected him by scoring a devastating knockout over the experienced “Tigre” Pimentel, catching Pimentel with some solid combinations before taking him out with a hook to the liver. Herrera also won by a 1st round TKO over eightyear veteran Zaid “The Terminator” Zavaleta on April 21, 2012. Mexican media described the win as spectacular even as Herrera said he got the expected result through intense preparation and training. The 24 year old Pagara who has a record of 30-2 with 19 knockouts is coming off an impressive 1st round knockout of previously undefeated Miguel antoine of barbados on October 20, 2012 after winning the vacant Wbo international title by a 6th round TKO over rugged Mexican Rosbel Montoya.

ONDON (AP) -- Andy Murray withdrew from the French Open on Tuesday because of a chronic back injury and will now focus on preparing for the start of the grass-court season next month. The U.s. open champion met with specialists this week after being forced to pull out of his second-match against Marcel Granollers of spain at the italian open last Wednesday because of the long-standing complaint. ‘’It’s a really tough decision and I love playing in Paris, but after seeking medical advice I am not fit to compete,’’ Murray said in a statement. ‘’Apologies to the organizers and thanks to everyone for the messages of support. Now my complete focus is on getting back on the court as soon as possible.’’ The French open, the second Grand slam tournament of the year, starts sunday. Last week in Rome, Murray took a long injury
break early in the second set against Granollers, getting his left thigh and lower back massaged. He seemed pessimistic about his chances of playing in the French Open, the only major in which he hasn’t reached the final. ‘’I have an issue with my lower back. It’s been an issue for a while,’’ Murray said then. ‘’I want to make sure it goes away. It’s been a problem since the end of 2011 but it got bad during last year’s clay season. ‘’I would be very surprised if I was playing in Paris.’’ Murray reached the quarterfinals at the French open last year, falling to david Ferrer, before going on to lose his first Wimbledon final to Roger Federer. he avenged that defeat against the swiss star to win Olympic gold, and downed Novak Djovokic at the U.s. open for his first Grand slam title later in 2012. Wimbledon runs from June 24 to July 7 this year.

Extremely hot
There is a food revolution in Durianburg and one front involves burgers and I am not talking about the fast food chain kind. What I am referring to are the many different places that now serve artisan burgers, big burgers that are loaded with fatty beefy goodness and one of them is harley’s Boulevard Motor Cafe. I actually just heard of the place after a couple of friends mentioned it to me while we were talking about burger joints. I was glad to find out that it is just a couple of blocks away from where I live, so one day while I was doing some chores, I decided to
drop by and take a peek. Located discreetly along Juan Luna Street just a short walk from Ateneo de Davao University, harley’s is a simple burger eatery tucked in with orange picket fences and some potted plants. In fact, I almost missed the restaurant
on my first pass around the street. Similar to the street-side chicken rice eateries of Singapore, harley’s is a bareboned eating establishment with wooden tables, wooden chairs, there is no air conditioning here. The walls are decorated with motorbike paraphernalia with the occasional quirky item like the Darth Vader helmet with deer antlers on one side. The menu of the eatery, that is posted onto the wall is a long one, but I decided to go with a simple order of their cheeseburger and an order of Fries and Chilli. The burger was ok, although I would have wanted it to have a more smoky
flavour and a little more fat but the chill fries were simply amazing and for the price, I was totally fine. I then discovered that what actually makes harley’s food much much better is their home-made chill sauce which they serve by the bottle. The chill sauce was smoky, spicy hot with a hint of sweetness but not too sweet like a Thai sweet chill sauce. Pair the savoury hot liquid heaven with whatever you are eating plus a bottle of coke and you are sure to have a good meal. In fact, I wanted to spirit away a bottle of the sauce but decided not to for fear of burning my lips. So if you are somehow in the area and would like a quick simple bite paired with an amazing extremely hot sauce, harley’s is one place you might want to drop by. Ingredients: ½ kilo Mussels, washed and soaked in ice cold water for an hour 3 cups fish stock or tepid water 1 piece Ginger root, chopped and mashed ½ stalk Lemon Grass, white part chopped 1 tablespoon Fish Sauce 1 piece red onion, chopped

Paying homage to my roots, I give you 3 Filipino loved recipes that are nothing compared to anything that I have eaten outside the borders of the archipelago. Give them a try and experiment – add, subtract and have your own signature on this well loved dishes. remember, your imagination is your limitation! Kinilaw A staple in every gathering, I have personally learned to love this when I was still doing my OJT over at Grand regal hotel. have it soaked in vinegar for a minute longer and you’ll certainly feel the explosive flavors in your palate. Ingredients: 1 1/2 to 2 pounds fresh tuna or tangigue 1 root ginger 1/4 cups vinegar 3 pieces red chilies 2 pieces calamansi, squeezed Salt to taste Method: Clean, debone, and cut the fish in small cubes. Then mix the fish in a mixture of vinegar, salt, chilies, calamansi and slices of ginger. Let stand for one hour in the refrigerator and serve cold. Chicken Adobo Ultimate comfort food! Do I still need to elaborate why? Well, got the urge to cook after listening to Gloc9 on my playlist talking about ‘chicken adobo’ Ingredients: 4 - 5 pieces chicken legs, you can use any part of the chicken, skin off and cleaned 5 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped 1 piece thumb size ginger,

Make sure all is incorporated and dissolved. Dump your chicken pieces and cover with cling wrapper. Let marinade for 10-15 minute. Sometimes, I leave it for 30 minutes to overnight even to let the flavor truly seep in. Take dish out of the fridge and straight to the stove. I do not thaw as I want every bit of flavor to not escape. Cook over low heat until the pieces becomes tender. You can leave the skin on if you want but I do not like it when the dish becomes too oily so I opt to remove it. If you feel like it needs more water, add so. Use tepid water instead of cold. Do not forget to season. Once done, take off
Clear Mussel Soup Because I live close to the shore (well, not literally but close enough), I am able to buy fresh mussels and cook them in ways that my Mama would often scold me. She believes that mussels are best cooked simple – and by simple, a clear soup. So, yes Mama, here is a mussel soup that I know you and Daddy would love.
Method: remove the beards of the mussels. Drain and tap any open shells. Throw out those that are already open. Simmer and cook the mussels over moderate heat for 4 to 5 minutes. Wait until the mussels open up. At this stage, throw those that are close. remove and set aside. In the same pan, keep the water and add remaining ingredients. Let simmer and season to taste. AN ANTONIO (AP) -- When Tony Parker started running low on masterful plays, Tim Duncan was there to take over and lead the san antonio spurs to a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. Parker had 15 points and a career playoff-high 18 assists, Duncan scored san antonio’s first six points of overtime and the spurs bounced back after squandering a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 93-89 on Tuesday night. ‘’I hate that we gave up that big of a lead in that situation,’’ duncan said. ‘’but we were resilient enough to go to overtime and not let it affect us.’’ Duncan opened the extra period with a layup, and then made a tiebreaking putback on Parker’s missed jumper. He then made a runner that bounced high of the back iron and rattled in for a 9187 lead with 1:08 to play. The Grizzlies had a chance to tie after Jerryd bayless hit a jumper and Parker missed one of two free throws with 14.6 seconds left, but bayless’ 3-pointer from the left wing was off-target. Memphis has fallen behind in all three playoff

Parker kept san antonio humming along after Duncan went to the bench with four fouls, the last three picked up within a span of 30 seconds, early in the third quarter. Parker provided the assist on the spurs’ first seven baskets of the second half, and then scored the next two on mid-range jumpers before getting pulled for a rest with a 72-54 lead. The Grizzlies mounted a 16-6 comeback while Parker was on the bench, getting as close as 78-70 after Zach Randolph scored inside following back-toback bayless jumpers. Parker checked back in and soon had the lead growing again, ducking under Darrell Arthur to hit a floater and then knocking down a 3-pointer from the right wing to make it 83-70 with 8:14 to play. but then Parker finally went cold, missing five straight shots down the stretch as the Grizzlies rallied back.
