OSSES suffered by various business operations caused by the Davao International Airport runway accident Sunday night have reached P250 million as of yesterday afternoon.

The figure was reached through a joined computation and estimates made by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. for the private sector, and the Davao City Investment Promotions Center (DCIPC) and City Tourism Office (CTO), both headed by Jason Mag-

naye, for the city government. According to architect Daniel T. Lim, DCCCII president, the estimates are based on the losses since the evening of June 2, when Cebu Pacific 5J971, minutes after touchdown, veered to the right, thrown off the ce-

Jess Delgado of the Ateneo de Davao University’s (ADDU’s) Department of Entrepreneurship, one of the passengers of Cebu Pacific’s ill-fated flight 5J971, felt that the landing was rather irregular the moment the plane touched down. Delgado was recalling his experience to members of Davao media, yesterday at the ADDU Jacinto campus during a press conference on the boycott of the airline by ADDU president, Fr. Joel E. Tabora S.J. “Usually, it takes about 20 seconds before a plane

comes to a full stop upon landing, but our plane came to a full stop barely five seconds after hitting the ground, causing our heads to bump the back of the seats in front of us,” he said. A student, Gizelle Escobañez, who was with him, saw sparks where the tip of the right wing hit some of the lights on the runway and saw what appeared to be grass, mud and debris just below the right wing. When panic started among the passengers, Delgado said he saw a flight attendant crying and did not seem to know what to do.

AyOr Sara Z. Duterte said yesterday the Davao City government will file charges against Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) for rejecting the assistance of the City’s Central 911 in last Sunday’s airport mishap involving a Cebu Pacific plane. The mayor demanded that CAAP Davao airport manager Fredrick San Felix submit certain documents before 5pm today. These documents

are: the name and complete contact information of the designated Davao International Airport (DIA) disaster and response officer; standard operating procedure guidelines on airport emergency protocol and/or contingency plans; and schedule of emergency response drill for 2013. The mayor did elaborate the legal purpose of the documents as she opted to keep her remedies under wraps. “Hindi lang man si Mayor Inday ang nad-

ismaya dito, kami din nadismaya (not only mayor Inday is upset, we are also upset),” San Felix said in reaction to the mayor’s disappointment to the DIA management. “The mayor is concerned because the business sector is complaining to her, it is normal that she will react, we (CAAP) are also reacting since we are losing a lot from this, as I said in Monday’s press conference, this has a big economic implication,” San Felix said.

According to the CAAP head, it is not yet certain if it was a CAAP personnel who rejected the assistance of 911. He said 911 is CAAP’s partner during emergencies. San Felix bared that CAAP wishes to be given the opportunity to ask the 911 crew who was denied entry during the emergency. He stressed that this is important in order to determine whoever is responsible from CAAP’s end of not letting the 911 team enter the facility.

It was only recently that Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio signed the implementing rules and regulations (Irr) of the ordinance. Felizarta told Edge Davao that part of their preparations for the full implementation is information dissemination done to the public. Staff from the Cenro, Traffic Management Center (TMC) and Land Transportation Office

Quake damage in NorthCot reaches P60 million, class opening cancelled T

HE series of earthquakes that struck North Cotabato province since Saturday damaged infrastructures worth at least P60 million, with Monday’s opening of

classes suspended in Carmen, the town that sits near the quakes’ epicenter, North Cotabato Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza said. In a text message, Men-

BACK TO SCHOOL. Elena Estrada and her grade 3 pupils assist carpenters as they install a tarpaulin to catch water leaks from the roof of their make-

lion. She said some houses’ walls were found to have collapsed, while solar driers, water systems, school buildings and barangay multi-purpose buildings

suffered some cracks. Boulders blocked a portion of the Carmen-Bukidnon national highway in Kimadzil due to landslide but the road is passable, she added. But roy Dorado, Office of Civil Defense region 12 (OCD-12) operations division chief, did not confirm or deny Mendoza’s estimate on the damage, noting the OCD-12 is still awaiting results of the validation conducted by the different government agencies. Mendoza said the Phivolcs has discovered “a new local fault line in the area.” North Cotabato sits along the Cotabato Trench. On August 16, 1976, a magnitude 8 earthquake involving the Cotabato Trench left 8,000 people dead or missing. The tremor generated a tsunami that caused most of the deaths. Dorado said at least 141 houses in Carmen town have been destroyed or damaged by the earthquakes since Saturday night. “Various government line agencies are still conducting an assessment to determine the exact extent

of the quakes’ damage,” he told MindaNews in a phone interview. At least 46 families have been provided with financial assistance worth P10,000 each, he said. The Municipal Disaster risk reduction Management Council has placed Carmen under a state of calamity, Dorado said. He added that the OCD-12, which is based in General Santos City, was expecting to have a comprehensive damage assessment report later today or tomorrow (Tuesday). The governor said in a text message that the opening of classes in Carmen town was deferred to ensure the safety of students. The Department of Education and the DPWH have been checking the integrity of classroom buildings to avert a possible disaster involving school children. Last Saturday’s quake injured at least five persons, four of them children, and partly destroyed 30 houses in Carmen town, Mendoza reported. [Bong S. tion, and Efficiency (ATUPEACE) initiative, which was patterned after Kalahi-CIDSS and also uses the community-driven development (CDD) as a strategy in poverty alleviation. CDD is a poverty alleviation strategy which gives citizens the power and the responsibility to analyze and address local issues that impede their development through participatory decision-making. It is the principal strategy of Kalahi-CIDSS, one of the three core programs under the DSWD, alongside the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (Pantawid) and the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP). “Here truly lies the heart of community empowerment; communities are part of the project every step of the way,” said Director Pato, describing the strategy of Kalahi-CIDSS. “We are helping communities help themselves move toward development,” he added. Director Pato also discussed the National Community Driven-Development Program (NCDDP), the scaling up of Kalahi-CIDSS into a nationwide strategy for poverty alleviation. He explained that the NCDDP will be three times the coverage of Kalahi-CIDSS and will

be geared toward development at both the local and national levels. However, he cautioned that there should be tighter relationship between the DSWD and the LGUs to effectively implement the program. “The successful execution of NCDDP calls for an increased focus on governance,” he said. This was supported by Undersecretary Fernandez, who said that the National Government should pay close attention to its poverty-alleviation programs by facilitating collaboration between the different national government agencies and the LGUs. He narrated a discussion with President Benigno Aquino III where they discussed how they can make the economic growth of the Philippines inclusive to everyone. “Dapat walang iwanan [No one should be left behind],” he said. “Pobre man ngayon, pero dapat hindi mamamatay na pobre [Poor people need not die still poor],” he added. For his part, Governor Uy is thankful for the inclusion of Compostela Valley as one of the chosen sites for the engagement. “Compostela Valley is honored and fortunate as one of the three provinces chosen to be the pilot areas,” he said.

ComVal LGU signs MOA to improve Kalahi-CIDSS

T

HE provincial local government unit (PLGU) of Compostela Valley recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) for the pilot testing of the enhancement of Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-CIDSS) at the provincial level. Compostela Valley Governor Arturo T. Uy signed the MOA with Director and Kalahi-CIDSS National Project Manager Edgar G. Pato, representing DSWD Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Juliano-Soliman, and DILG Undersecretary Francisco Fernandez, representing DILG Secretary Manuel “Mar” roxas. According to Director Pato, Compostela Valley was chosen as one of the three pilot sites because of its active participation in the implementation of Kalahi-CIDSS, by providing PhP 4.29 M counterpart fund since 2011. Serendra blast unit not cleared for lease M

ANILA, Philippines The Two Serendra unit that exploded on Friday, May 31, which killed 3 and injured 5 was still pending final inspection after renovations had been done to the apartment. Unit 501B, the site of a deadly blast in the posh enclave in Taguig City, had undergone renovations between April-May. It had yet to be cleared by Serendra management. “It was still in the process of being cleared of final inspection before it can be rented to a lessee,” raymond Fortun, the counsel of unit owner George Cayton, told rappler over the phone. While it was not yet approved for leasing however, Cayton’s family, upon approval of management, lent the apartment for 9 days to a good friend, Angelito San Juan, who was in Manila for a wedding. Both Cayton and San Juan are based in the United States. Serendra approved the request of Cayton to let San Juan stay in the apartment from May 31-June 8. “Marianne Cayton

(daughter of George) had to secure a permit from security management to allow San Juan to enter the premises. Serendra approved it upon the request of the property owner who said, ‘This is a friend,’ and filed a written request,” he said. Fortun said Marianne is expected to arrive on Friday, June 7, to cooperate with the probe and provide documents on the renovations done in the unit, as well as previous maintenance issues the family complained about. Probers said they are continuing the investigation, but have yet to name the cause of the blast. Interior Secretary Mar roxas told media on Sunday, June 2, the likelihood the explosion was due to a bomb is getting slimmer, as neither bomb-sniffing dogs nor investigators found traces of bomb chemicals or fumes. The investigation has turned to engineering issues in the building as a possible cause. Gas has been cut off from all Two Serendra buildings as the investigation continues. - Rappler.com

Cebu couple nabbed for using own kid in cybersex operations

ITH the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Inter-Agency Council Against Human Trafficking rescued three minors and arrested a couple engaged in cybersex operations in Cordova, Cebu last May 26. Led by the National Bureau of Investigation’s Anti-Human-Trafficking-Division, the IACAT team from the Department of Justice, Department of Social Welfare and Development, International Justice Mission nabbed Mila and Nilo for multiple violations. These included violations of republic Act 9775, or the Anti-Child Pornography Act, and rA 9208, or the Anti-Trafficking in Per-

sons Act of 2003, which carries penalties of life imprisonment and a fine ranging from P2 million to P5 million. According to NBI-Central Visayas Director Antonio Pagatpat, the couple allegedly used children in their community in Brgy Ibabao, including their 13-year-old daughter to pose nude and make lewd videos for their online customers for fees ranging from P3,000 to P5,000 per session. Under republic Act 10364, or the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2012, the names of suspects are no longer kept confidential but for the protection of the couple’s child, their true names were not mentioned.

The DSWD has taken custody of their daughter, another girl, 14, and a boy, 17. Justice Undersecretary Jose Vicente Salazar, in-charge of IACAT, lauded the successful operations but said there is a lot more to be done. “Our collaborations, both locally and internationally are key to this mission. We need to strengthen our commitment as the situation has serious impact into the way we view family and morality,” Salazar said. An information given by the USICE to the NBI headquarters in Manila led to the entrapment, after an American was arrested in the US viewing nude minors online. Salazar said they

will continue the monitoring of cybersex den operations in Cebu and Central Visayas. The cybersex operations have been prevalent in the Visayas region, particularly in Cordova, Cebu for several years now with similar cases of parents “selling” their own children on-line. The setting-up only requires a computer and a webcam and the payment is made quickly and accessibly through international money transfers. “This victory against human trafficking should serve as a warning to all cybersex den operators all over the country. We’ll make sure the offenders get punished,” Justice Secretary Leila De M. Lima said. (PNA)

The justice ministry

has said home care is not an option for inmates, and Chen does not qualify for immediate parole on medical grounds because he can receive treatment at the prison hospital. Chen’s family and supporters have angrily accused the government of President Ma ying-jeou of the nationalist Kuomintang party (KMT) of making a politically motivated decision to deny him medical parole.

Bishops not in favor of priests owning guns

C

ATHOLIC prelates said priests must be non-violent therefore they don’t need guns. According to Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes they don’t get protection from weapons but from angels above. “No! priests must be non violent. We get our protection from the Holy angels -- not weapons,” he said. Bishop Jose Oliveros said priests are supposed to be man of peace and not of war. “Definitely not ... Our Lord said, he who lives by the sword, will die by the sword. We should not counter violence with violence,” he added. Lipa Archbishop ramon Arguelles noted that he is for a gunless society. “I am for gunless society. We priests are not afraid of dangers ... weapons the people should carry are weapons offorgiveness, mercy, goodness and love. These weapons never hurt. All other weapons

destroy,” he said. Likewise, Cubao Bishop Honesto Ongtioco does not support the idea of priests having guns. “No. Our vocation and role in the transformation of society as priests is different. Our security is more on what we do, how we interact and live with people. Last month, President Benigno Aquino III signed republic Act (rA) 10591, the “Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition regulation Act.” The law allows gun ownership, especially individuals whose nature of work may pose danger to their lives such asjuridical entities, corporate officers like the vice president, treasurer or board secretary; as well as lawyers, certified public accountants; accredited media practitioners; cashiers, bank tellers; priests, ministers, rabbi, imams; doctors and nurses; engineers; and businessmen. Mindanao clinches $4.3M sales at IFEX F

OOD producers and processors from Mindanao clinched US$4.3 million in total sales at the recently concluded International Food Exhibit (IFEX) 2013, proving once more that Mindanao food products are gaining ground in the international market.

The value of immediate and booked sales orders cornered by the 71 Mindanao exhibitors came close to US$1.7 million throughout the fourday exhibit, while the projected value of sales orders following the expo amounted to more than US$2.64 million.

“Mindanao industries are poised for the international market as proven by the significant domestic and international sales they generated from IFEX, reaffirming the potentials of food products from the region,” said Luwalhati Antonino, Chair of the

Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA). She added that IFEX, the country’s largest gathering of food producers, processors and exporters, provided the Mindanao food sector a venue to position its finest food products to international buyers.

“These figures do not yet include the sales generated by other Mindanao-based companies which decided to setup exhibits outside of the Mindanao Pavilion during IFEX,” explained Antonino by adding that more sales are expected from orders of international buyers which are currently under negotiation. Held from May 16 to 19 at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, IFEX 2013 gathered more than 700 product exhibitors, buyers, food exporters from key regions and cities in Asia, Middle East, and United States. Among the best selling Mindanao products were Northern Mindanao’s soya; Zamboanga Peninsula’s seafood, particularly sardines and seaweed-based products; Davao region’s cocoa, coco sugar, and fruits; Central Mindanao’s organic rice and agri-based products; Southern Mindanao’s processed fish; and Autonomous region in Muslim Mindanao’s coffee. “Our attendance to the IFEX was our first attempt at penetrating

the international market and we are more than glad that it gave us the international exposure we that needed,” shared Julius Bularon, chief executive officer of BMAN Bravo Unlimited, Corporation a manufacturing and trading corporation based in Canubay, Oroquieta City which initially booked international product orders worth $1.5 million. He explained that one of the bestsellers from their company was the Bravo Energy meal, a ready-to-go food mix made up of soya, cereal, brown rice, and other high-fiber ingredients. MinDA, in coordination with the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic resources and the Department of Trade and Industry’s Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions secured the participation of Mindanao-based food producers, processors, and exporters to the event to promote the region’s small to medium enterprises who are engaged in the food processing industry.[MinDA]

BMAN Bravo Unlimited Corp. bestseller from Mindanao By che Palicte

D

UrING the recently concluded International Food Exhibit (IFEX) 2013, US$ 4.3 million in total sales went to Mindanao where BMAN Bravo Unlimited Corporation in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental, booked a total of $1.5 million worth of product orders from food exporters in Asia, Middle East and the United States. Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) director for investment promotion and public affairs romeo Montenegro told media during the weekly Kapehan sa Dabaw yesterday in SM Annex that the bestseller of the BMAN Bravo Unlimited Corporation is the Bravo Energy Meal, a ready to-go food mix made up of soya, cereal, brown rice and some high-fiber ingredients. “We wanted to have the opportunity to be able to present the Mindanao products to the international platform of marketing,” he said. He added that IFEX, the country’s largest gathering of food producers, processors

and exporters, provided the Mindanao food sector a venue to position its finest food products to international buyers. Also among the best selling products in Mindanao were: Northern Mindanao’s soya; Zamboanga Peninsula’s seafood (particularly sardines and seaweed-based products); Davao region’s cocoa, coco sugar, and fruits; Central Mindanao’s organic rice and agri-based products; Southern Mindanao’s processed fish; and Autonomous region for Muslim Mindanao’s (ArMM) coffee. Montenegro bared that when the IFEX was held in Manila, Singaporean food buyers came to the city to see the fresh vegetable products last May 17. “MinDA is looking for ways for the mode of transporting our products and our advocacy is to establish more flights to international destinations, including a roll-on roll-off shipping vessels that would connect Mindanao to Indonesia,” Montenegro said. He added that if that plan is implemented, the products of

Mindanao will get to the markets as quick and as efficient as possible. “That link is very important,” Montenegro said.

“This is our priority in MinDA, in line also with our agenda for 2015 ASEAN integration and we will really prepare Mindanao for this event,” he said.

Davao regional Director Marizon S. Loreto said that by making this particular initiative a regular program of DTI-Davao, the agency will further improve its service to its clients. “As an ISO-certified organization, it has always been our commitment to continuously provide excellent service to our

clients – both the consumers and business people,” she said. Meanwhile, DTI-Davao’s KM consultant Dr. Lorenzo F. Templonuevo said the practice of KM in organizations entails the institutionalization of the KM processes that include: (1) identification; (2) creation; (3) storage; (4) sharing; and, (5)

application of knowledge. The DTI-Davao KM training conducted recently in Davao City bannered the theme “Optimizing gains from knowledge assets”, a clear indication that the agency is indeed committed to boost its current system and performance by maximizing the use of available knowledge. Templonuevo said that in KM, knowledge is more than just data and information since it speaks of the “capacity for effective action”. In KM, data is defined as symbols which make sense while information is data with meaning. This is supported by Loreto when she emphasized that action is more important than just having piles of data and information stored. “In DTI, it has always been our mantra to optimize the use of every little resource that we have. relative to knowledge, we want those gathered and stored data and information to be translated into something that will benefit more consumers and businessmen,” she said.

Bad news: Still no Google apps for Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry B

AD news for Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry device owners: Google still isn’t prepared to support either platform with dedicated apps. Speaking at this week’s D11 conference, Sundar Pichai, Google’s head of Android and Chrome, said that Google

wouldn’t reconsider its position until the operating systems could boast more users. “For platforms that don’t have that many users at scale, we have great HTML5 apps. If they get more users, we will make apps,” he

said. His comments highlight the real problem with the current state of the smartphone market. It doesn’t matter how well made or powerful a handset is, or how simple and intuitive its user interface, if its owners don’t have access to the latest and the best apps. Contrast Google’s attitude towards Microsoft and BlackBerry with its treatment of Apple. The iOS versions of Google’s apps -be it Gmail, Google Maps or youTube -- are often far superior to the same apps it offers users of its own Android operating system because it desperately wants to court or even tempt away Apple device users. BlackBerry has come up with a novel solution for attracting apps to its ecosystem: an Android emulator which essentially lets apps written for Google’s OS work on

BlackBerry devices. MeanwhileMicrosoft attempted to build its own youTube app for the Windows Phone and in doing so got into a fight with Google as the application stripped out advertising. As a result, Microsoft has been forced to pull the app from its Windows Phone app store. Though entertaining for those who like to watch technology companies bicker, it is less than reassuring for BlackBerry and Windows Phone users. Though the popularity of both platforms is growing -- the latest market share figures show that both platforms have over 4% of global sales over the last quarter -- neither platform is currently growing quickly enough to force Google to rethink its position. All of which means that owners of these devices will have to continue accessing Gmail, youTube, Google Search and Google Maps via their mobile web browsers.

Next Web reported. “(rosenberg) says he reverse-engineered Samsung’s code to figure out the memory address where the bootloader will load the kernel to carry out the signature check. He found the memory address can be chosen in such a way that the bootloader’s ... function is overwritten before the loader actually calls it, thus bypassing the need to check

whether a valid signature is present or not,” it said. It said rosenberg claimed to have found a “design flaw” in the S4’s secure boot system. However, The Next Web also noted most models of the S4 include an unlocked bootloader, meaning most S4 owners can “flash custom kernels and make other modifications to the software on their own devices.”

Leave it to the ‘bakal boys’

S

O, what’s taking the Cebu Pacific and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) people so long to remove the damaged aircraft from the runway of the Davao International Airport? Two days gone and they’re still at it. About the only thing changing constantly in the removal operations is the timeframe set by CAAP which has been extended for the nth time. And while the plane remains stuck in the mud in-between the concrete stretch of the runway, an estimated P1 million a day is lost from the airport operations revenue. Add to that 80 flights disrupted and 2,500 passengers a day not going or coming. Now, CAAP and Cebu Pacific both say they will clear the stymied plane through various means from cranes to hot air balloon that the ill-fated Airbus A320 aircraft may fly again. So, what’s taking them so long? Here’s an unsolicited alternative solution and it’s been proven by hardened souls who populate tough neighborhoods. Gather all the “bakal boys”, the street robbers victimizing our parked cars, the junkyard “cannibalizers,” and even the “baha boys” of Bajada. Bring them all up to

the airport and let them pick apart take down that gorgeous mass of steel. In hours, mind you, presto! No more Airbus, and the DIA will be back in business. At the rate these street rats dismantle side mirrors, take out tires, rims, lamps, car stereos and other vehicle accessories, that plane will be an easy job to cannibalize. No cranes, no balloons. No hydraulic lifts. Oh boy, what a catch would that be for the “bakal boys” and the “junkyard dogs.” There must be a lot of money in junkyard shops. There’s the standby “baha boys’”of Bajada who thrive on floods along J.P. Laurel Avenue making money by pushing cars stuck in the waters. Seriously, though, should the removal operations drag on another day or two, people going through the motion of doing what they are paid good people’s money to do, it’s time to kick some butts. When you have a facility that’s supposed to be of international standards, it is surprising that in this high-tech age one plane stuck in the mud is a stark reminder of our failings as a nation in so many areas of human endeavor. Let’s just hope that this other thing called K + 12 will work.

Offers little more than false hopes

ITy’S ECONOMIC WOES ArE EXPECTED TO WOrSEN – City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio could not hide her frustration over an incident Sunday night involving a Cebu Pacific plane while landing at the Davao International Airport (DIA). The lady mayor was fuming at how concerned government agencies sluggishly responded to the fateful occurrence. She accused over-bearing executives of DIA, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and Cebu Pacific for mishandling the situation. The aircraft bound from Manila with more than 100 passengers and crew on board overshoot the runway and its nose got stalled in the muddy and grassy portion of the airstrip. The city’s economic woes are expected to worsen while the ill-fated aircraft remained in its present state. Consider these figures on a daily basis. Airport obstruction damage: P1 million a day in financial losses, 80 inbound and outbound flights disrupted, 2, 500 passengers stranded not to mention the monstrous traffic snarl outside the facility. If that were’nt enough, CAAP’s aircraft accident investigators take too long to conduct a probe to determine the cause of the accident. The snail-pace investigation probably will take days or maybe weeks before the results are known to the interest of the cautious traveling public. One important thing people ought to know, though, is that Mayor Sara charged airport authorities for having violated safety protocol by preventing the entry to the airport premises of the city’s quick response teams: City Public Safety Command Center, police personnel, fire trucks and the reliable Central 911

who immediately went to the scene to extend help. In making her assertions, the lady mayor said they’re continuing to work on all angles referring to the possibility of sacking irresponsible airport executives after they allegedly rejected the offer of help by the city’s disaster response teams and also because they did not act according to safety protocol. Another thing that got the ire of Mayor Sara was CAAP’s failure to ask immediate assistance and only then she learned from inside sources that it was the concerned security guards who called up 911 for help. I presumed some high-profile CAAP officials need a lot of explaining to do before their superiors. Part of the problem is likewise the airline company who called for assistance only after an hour. And to the surprise of the joined disaster response teams there are 20 injured passengers hidden in a secluded area awaiting treatment. Are these people trying to conceal evidence and for what reasons? Surely they are doing more harm than good by not attending immediately to the medical needs of the patients. Moreover, many thought the explanation of the lukewarm airport manager odd since he gave conflicting statements to media. Although he says that everything is under control, it was clear enough that he was trying to evade the

real issue: that there were casualties and power failure when the ill-fated plane landed. He was elusive like an eel by saying otherwise. However, Mayor Sara doubted his explanation the reason that she decisively refuted his undesirable claim. Under the present situation these type of public officials don’t deserve to stay a minute longer in their highly lucrative posts. “Heads should roll,” as what he mayor aptly says. The DIA also known as Francisco Bangoy International Airport once seemed the symbol of grandeur and prestige. It has a strategic location, vibrant and prosperous with growth rates well above the average. But that was then, this is now. Only last March 2012, the regional Development Council (rDC II) questioned the safety of the DIA on account of certain deficiencies such as lack of x-ray machines, fire trucks, leaking roofs, poor water supply and unsanitary condition of rest rooms. The problems and complaints have been elevated to concerned higher agencies but until now it seemed the concerns had been designated in the dustbin. right after the Sunday airport mishap involved passengers desperate for justice and fair compensation relied on airport officials’ fast and resolute action, which from the looks of it offers little more than false hopes. It is only appropriate for the city government to file proper charges against DIA officials for being remiss on their jobs. Having well-paid officials but with lackadaisical performance like them running the activities of our airport, passengers and the traveling public in general will continue to experience inconvenience and anxiety.

i nve s t m e n t s are “scams” or “gambling”. Banks however, know that investing your savings deposits in stocks, mutual funds, bonds, govt securities, etc is one of the best ways to earn a huge pile of money if you sit on them for as long as possible. The longer you sit on a mutual fund investment, for instance, the bigger the pile grows over five years, seven years, ten years, etc. That’s why, we’re not surprised today, that banks in the Philippines are now selling mutual funds, besides their own “unit trust fund” (UTF), so that bank clients like you, don’t have to go out of the bank to find mutual fund companies trying to woo your deposits to invest in funds like Bond Fund (that invests in govt securities, corporate bonds, etc), Equity Fund (that invest in stocks of strong, growing, stable companies) and Balanced Fund (that invest in a mix of bonds, securities, and stocks). Some banks are even going further---

Banco de Oro and Metro Bank are now packaging a new investment package called “Exchange Traded Funds” or ETF that acts like a mutual fund, but can be bought and sold in the Philippine Stock Exchange like any ordinary stock. Foreign investors find it easier to invest in any country’s stocks simply by buying an ETF. you cannot do that with a mutual fund, which is bought directly from a financial company like Sun Life Asset Management Company, Manufacturers or PhilamLife. Because it can be traded freely in the stock exchange, ETFs have become very popular among global investors seeking fast-growing investments in emerging markets, specially in Asia. Black rock, one of the world’s biggest investment companies now sells Philippine equities thru their own ETF package called MCPI Philippines under the symbol “EPHE” which is one of the strongest funds in the world today due to our country’s very strong growth. IF yOU’rE a client of a bank with deposits of say, P10 Million, just sitting there idly for years, as your “nest egg” and “savings” for your future, would you rather earn P500,000 in savings interest after 10 years--- or P30 Million from a mutual fund covering the same period ? (Comments? Email me at > tradingpost_davao@yahoo.com)

Chopping up Nick Joaquin’s short story

F yOU’rE not aware of this yet, one day you’ll realize that “parking’ your money in the bank as “savings deposit” is a waste of time and money as the years go by. But the image of a bank as the only “secured place” to keep all your money will always remain with you because you don’t trust anything else but the bank, to keep your money safe. The only thing that makes you stick with the bank is TrUST and nothing else. you trust the bank--your bank-- completely. you’ll keep all your money there even if the bank pays you only a small interest of 4% or 5% every year, while the bank earns millions and millions, using depositors’ money-- including your own money-- to invest in stocks, mutual funds, real estate, loans, government securities, etc --- earning 40%, 60% even up to 200% on these investments. No wonder banks are getting bigger and richer these days. What depositors like you still don’t know yet, is that yOU have the right , the privilege and the freedom to also earn 40%, 60% even up to 400% on your savings---that is, if you do exactly what the bank does with your money : INVEST IT in some “financial instruments” that allow your money to grow tremendously. But the problem is, most people like you, still don’t trust this thing called “investment”. Many people still think all

S

Ay paradise and people’s eyes instantly light up and their lips part into a beguiling, ecstatic smile. But the curious mind asks, that’s because the word generally refers to a place of beauty and delight --- a world of elated bliss. But the curious mind asks; but where is paradise? The bible tells us that paradise is the “coalescent of heaven – a place where those who die in the grace of the Lord shall dwell with Him forever.” Some religious sects teach that paradise is a “place where the souls of the righteous await the final resurrection and entry into heaven.” (This implies that paradise is not in heaven – EE). The Islamic concept of paradise, on the other hand, is that of “a beautiful watered area – opposite of a desert – inhabited by celestial beings of both sexes who take their fill of sensual delights.” (This must be the place movie bold stars would love to stay forever – EE). To the Puritans (the first English settlers in America) paradise is “a place where saints and angels mingle and spend most of their time playing the harp and singing praises of the Deity.” (Or born again friends would surely want to spend the rest of their lives there – EE). Again, accounts in the bible describe paradise as “a place of mountains with four rivers flowing with milk and honey.” (It must be somewhere in the USA). The word paradise has a Persian origin, and it means park. Modern language adopted it as a name for the Garden of Eden which, as we all know, is the birthplace of Adam and Eve, mankind’s first citizens. If paradise is a park – somewhere in Iraq– then it is just here on earth, as can be deduced from several biblical texts which hint that paradise is an earthly location. It is generally accepted, however, that Paradise is “a place or heavenly abode of the blest.” (This denotes a place LIKE Heaven, NOT Heaven itself – EE). Once more, where is Paradise? Foreign tourists, upon setting foot on Boracay beach in the Visayas, usually proclaim with outstretched arms: “Ahhh, this is Paradise.” Of course, Dabawenyo know for a fact that paradise is in Samal Island. (The beach resort, silly).

Collateral damage.. FFROM 1 mented portion of runway, its landing gear skidding on the soft grassy portion before it stopped and got stuck in the mud. The estimate figures are as of 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The pencil-pushing done by DCCCII and Magnaye’s group arrived at these losses: --Cancelled hotel bookings, P3 million; --Losses of airport concessionaires,

P500,000; --Transport service providers (vans, taxis, tourist buses, cars for rent, etc.), P1.5 million; --Losses of restaurants, malls and other tourism allied services, P30 million; --Airport terminal revenues, P2 million; --revenues of cargo services (P70 million a day multiplied by two days), P190 million. A later television report quoting Mag-

naye increased the losses to a total of P250 million. The losses are estimated to increase if the ill-fated Cebu Pacific remained mired in the mud blocking the runway of Mindanao’s premier airport facility. Late reports however bared that the stuck aircraft has been pulled out as of 5:14 pm yesterday. Flights were expected to resume by 8 pm.

Later on the captain came out of the cockpit with sweat all over his face explaining something without a megaphone, so only the passengers in the front could hear him. “We couldn’t hear him because of the pressure, we could also smell fumes and there was some smoke in the plane,” said Delgado. It was only after about 27 minutes when the crew decided to order the passengers to leave without protocol. After half of the passengers had deplaned, some of the crew saw that there were infants and elderly who should have been the first off the plane. In such an occasion, the normal thing to do would be for passengers to call or text their family to apprise them of the situation, Delgado said. “When we went out, we were reprimanded for using our cell phones and telling us that it was

not allowed since highly flammable gas was being offloaded.” “We were already using our phones, even before we were informed of the highly flammable gas that was being offloaded,” Delgado said. “When we were out of the plane, it was raining but there were no umbrellas, no cars were waiting, and we were crowded in an ambulance, and there were multicabs to take us to the airport building,” he said. It took about 40 minutes before a staff from the Cebu Pacific talked to the passengers, he did not even know what he was doing since he said he was not the one in-charge. According to Delgado, “it was only after a couple of hours before the station manager of Davao International Airport talked to us, saying that they were awaiting orders from Manila.” “They did not know

what to do with the injured passengers, there were passengers who nearly had hypertension, there were pregnant women, and there were people who were hurt because their heads were banged up bad during the crash landing,” he said. According to Delgado, Davao Oriental vice Governor Joel Almario, one of the 165 passengers, told the airport and Cebu Pacific personnel to take care of the injured passengers because they need help and he requested for a medical team. “One doctor came, but I’m not sure if he is a staff of the Cebu Pacific, of the Airport, or was one of the passengers who volunteered,” Delgado said. “We asked for food and water, but they gave us only water and tetra pack juice,” Delgado said. “We did not receive any proper accommodation by Cebu Pacific,” Escobañez said.

AdDU to stop buying tickets worth P300T from Cebu Pacific By EJ Dominic FErnanDEz

P

300,000 a month worth of plane tickets will be bought from the Philippine Airlines now instead of Cebu Pacific Air. This, after Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) president, Fr Joel E. Tabora S.J., ordered a boycott on CebPac. Jeremy S. Eliab, assistant to the ADDU president, said the school buys P200,000 to P300,000 worth of tickets every month from Cebu Pacific. “This is the average, we even reached P500,000 to a peak of P1million a month, especially during semester breaks when teachers, staff and students fly to areas in Luzon or rhw Visayas to attend retreats,” he said. According to Eliab, they now have opened an account with PAL, “although sometimes, its ticket prices can be up to

50 percent more expensive than Cebu Pacific’s. Tabora said they wuld pull out their account from Cebu Pacific. ADDU received a certificate of appreciation from Cebu Pacific last May 31 for being one of the airline’s best customers. In a press statement. Tabora said, “AdDU has been a loyal customer of Cebu Pacific for many, many years.” After the a Cebu Pacific passenger aircraft skidded off the Davao International Airport runway Sunday night, Tabora’s instant reaction was explicit: “last night, you proved you do not deserve our patronage.” Tabora said the boycott is a protest against the “insensitivity and ineptness of the manner in which Cebu Pacific passengers were ignored and neglected by your (Cebu Pacific)

personnel last night in an hour of emergency.” “I am incensed, not because there was mechanical failure last night, but because of Cebu Pacific’s manifest humane failure,” he said, adding, “your personnel lack training for an emergency situation, they froze, they did not know what to do.” During a press conference held at the AdDU Jacinto Campus yesterday, in line with Fr. Tabora’s earlier statement, Dr. Jess Delgado of ADDU’s Department of Entrepreneurship, and student, Gizelle Escobañez, who were both aboard flight 5J971 of Cebu Pacific, aired their grievances. Delgado said they did not feel any after sales treatment from Cebu Pacific with how they were handled during the emergency.

The ASBU apprehending officer will issue violators an emission discharge ticket (EDT) and charge an administrative fine of P1,000 payable to the city treasurer’s office within seven days, along with a recommendation that the vehicle undergo repairs and go under emission testing again. Once the violator has paid the fine, he must present the receipt to the ASBU Smoke Testing Cen-

ter and if already tested it will undergo emission re-testing at the center for free. The anti-smoke belching ordinance aims to protect the city’s air quality ity and requires payment of an emission discharge fee from all motor vehicle owners and operators, found to be using the Davao City Airshed as a receptacle for emissions in excess of the Clean Air Act standard for motor vehicle emissions.

KGCP, students join hands in ‘growing trees’

M

INING firm Kingking Copper-Gold Project (KCGP) and students of the Nestor Fausta Memorial College, Inc. (NFMCI) partnered in a tree-planting activity in Pantukan, Compostela Valley last May 22. Placing more importance on “growing trees rather than planting”, KCGP and NFMCI signed a memorandum of agreement and agreed to do more activities in the future that would sustain the growth of the planted trees. The activity started with a short program which was attended by Brgy Capt and newly-elected Pantukan mayor roberto “Ondoy” yugo of Brgy Kingking; rogelio Hermo, OIC- CENrO-Maco; Petronilo Cancino, Operations Manager – KCGP; Debbie ruth yasay, Environment and Permitting Manager – KCGP; Jonathan Baňez, Community relations and Development Unit Head – KCGP; Lenna Mae Leopoldo, Environmental Scientist – KCGP; and Philip Noel Garrote, Environmental Management and Monitoring Specialist. Mayor-elect yugo appreciated the effort of the school and the prompt response of KCGP for the said climate-change-derailing activity. Hermo on his part as-

sociated the celebration of Ocean Month (May) with the tree planting activity. He pointed out to the student-participants that whatever we do in our lands will generally affect our oceans and the creatures living under, as the water flowing from uplands will definitely reach our seas. Cancino thanked the school administration and its students for making KCGP their partner. He said that the company is committed to support environment protection programs and will never get tired of doing it. He also thanked the opportunity of sharing to the young generation the proper technology in planting. He emphasized that the company targets not just planting but on how to grow and sustain trees. That it is not on how many trees you plant but on how many trees you grow. Joed James Daguman, an alumnus of NFMCI, who also participated in the activity, praised KCGP’s involvement in preserving and protecting the environment and the knowledge they share to stakeholders in areas where they would operate. He was taught on the planting site the proper way of handling the seedlings and on how to plant it. [BOT]

Gilas-Pilipinas begins tune-ups in Lithuania G

BLUE. cris tiu of the Blue Eagles glides against the defense of green Archers; Don Allado and Mac cardona during the Blue vs. green match at the MoA Arena last Sunday.

ilas-PiliPinas starts testing its potential to carry the country’s colors in the coming 27th FIBA-Asia championship when it faces powerhouse Klaipedos Neptunas opening its six game tune-up and exhibition series Wednesday at the Svyturio Arena in Klaipeda City in the Baltic republic of Lithuania. The 13-player selection comprising the national training pool arrived in Lithuania’s third largest city late Monday afternoon along with head coach Chot reyes and team manager Butch Antonio following a 20hour flight from Manila that saw them stop over in Bangkok and Copenhagen. The pool, made up of

Larry Fonacier, Jimmy Alapag, Jason Castro and ranidel de Ocampo, all of Talk ‘N Text, Gabe Norwood and Jeff Chan of rain Or Shine, Mark Pingris of San Mig Coffee, June Mar Fajardo of Petron, and L.A. Tenorio of of Barangay Ginebra, Gary David and Japeth Aguilar of Barako Bull, naturalized player Marcus Douthit and last minute addition Beau Belga, also of the Elasto Painters, actually had the first taste of their 16-dy training camp Tuesday at the Svyturio Arena training facilities. The still travel-weary Filipinos and the Lithuanians battle at 7 p.m. (12 midnight) with reyes’ boys merely trying to size up the things in store for them in this trial run of what they will achieve in the camp. Klaipedons Neptunas ended up third in the recent 2013 Challenge Cup of the Baltic professional league and should give the Nationals the competition they badly need since they begun practice session two weeks ago. Its star-studded lineup includes Valdas Avsylius, a forward who played collegiate ball at the Old Dominion University and a member of the Lithuanian national team in the 2007 University Games. The team is reinforced by another American-trained player, rashun Eneal Broadus, a point-guard who saw action in the Brigham young University in the Unites States NCAA besides spending, too, a few years in the European leagues. Completing the Klaipedos Neptunas lineup are 6-foot-8 center Vytautas Sarakauskas, shooting guard Marius runkauskas, Marrinas Maseika, Daviud McLure,

Deividas Gailius, raimundas Danys, Laurynas Mikalaukas, Simas Galdikas, Geidrius Gustas, Arnas Butkevicius and Evaldas Danys. Coach is Marksvytis Kazys. reyes expressed high hopes that the Lithuania camp can fill the vacuum left by the delay in the implementation of the training program brought about by injuries to some of the original members of the pool -- Kelly Williams, Jarred Dillinger and ryan reyes, also of TnT, and Sonny Thoss of Alaska Milk -- he named last February yet. Depending on how the players respond to the rigors of the camp and their performance in the tune-up games lined up for them, reyes and Antonio believe chances are that the final composition of the Philippine team will be finalized when the delegation heads for home in middle of this month. Next to test the Gilas’ mettle, according to Antonio, is Kaunas LSU-Baltai which it opposes on June 7. Another matchup against Birstono Jazz Diremta on June 7 precedes the Nationals’ two-game confrontation versus the Lithuanian Under-20 Selection on June 11 and June 13. The Nationals windup their six-game goodwill games in a return match with Kaunas LSU-Baltai on June 15, eve of their departure back to Manila. SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan and chair ricky Vargas wished the pool the best as both expressed hopes that delegtion returns home rich in experience needed to at least finish in the coming August 1-11 FIBA-Asia cage war to qualify in the 2014 FIBA-World Championship. The spellbinding music of Songspell

ABOVE: Annie. BELOW: Les Miserables.

ALMOST everyone loves the performing arts. Aside from having your children participate in drama clubs or dance recitals, it is also gratifying to take them along to musical performances. The children’s awe at the spectacle, and the look of wonder on their faces, is worth much more than the price of admission. I brought along my daughter with me to the live concert of Songspell Foundation, which also served as recital for students who joined their summer program. The show entitled Fill up the Night with Music showcased excerpts from Broadway hit musicals Annie, Miss Saigon, and Les Miserables. About 37 youngsters took part in the concert together with

Miss Saigon.

lead members Keith Gonzales, Koi Sevilla, Bodick

Madrazo, Nonong Inigo, Shiela Mendoza, Nikko Moreno, Francis Orias, Valene Laguilla, Nelson Edralin, and, last but not the least, my cousin Missy Ansaldo. Dance and music are in our genes, and I went to the show to extend my support and to see my cousin perform. While Missy has been performing with Songspell for more than decade, it is unfortunate that I never got to see any of her previous shows. Hoping to make up for all those years I missed her plays, I took this opportunity to see her and show off her acting skills to my own little trouper. Seeing my own cousin act and sing onstage sent shivers down my spine. She has always been known as the “artista” in our family, having joined the local version of Ang TV in her elementary years and, later on, the prestigious Repertory Philippines. Her years of training and performing with Songspell has definitely honed her powerful voice and developed her into a character actress. I proudly give credit to her mom for her dedication in making a good performer out of Missy. I remember how religious they were when it came to practice and training, starting when Missy turned 8 or 9

years old. Those were the years when Songspell has just opened its doors to new members, and now the institution has grown into a big family just as my cousin has grown into a multi-hyphenate and talented young lady. The Songspell Foundation Inc. was formed in Davao City in 1996. Pioneered by their Musical Director, Ms. Nelly Castro, and their President, Mr. Fernando Pareja, SongSpell has been bringing music here and abroad for almost 17 years. It is an institution of committed families dedicated to the artistic, moral and spiritual formation of children and youth. It first started with two kids who performed in private functions. Soon, it grew into

a small group who developed a new repertoire with musical numbers from Broadway and offBroadway musicals, and a couple of Tagalog and Cebuano songs. Because of this exposure, a lot of parents wanted the same training and musicality instilled their children. Thus, Songspell Foundation Inc. grew into a huge group of performers of different age groups from schools all over Davao. Their growing popularity earned them accolades and paved way for opportunities and projects around country.

The big break came when the group became the opening act for Filipino singer Dulce, and received an invitation for a concert tour in the USA. Songspell was also asked to sing for the US Ambassador during his visit in 1999. In 2000, the group flew to the United States of America and had successful shows in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Washington D.C. This was followed by consecutive concert tours abroad every two years. To date, Songspell has gone on 7 concert tours and have performed in states and cities like Maryland, Atlanta, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Virginia, Boston, North and South Carolina, and even across the borders all the way to Toronto, Canada. The foundation is planning its 8th trip in 2014.

ber of submissions it has currently been receiving, Cat@lyst, the social transformation initiative promoting positive change through new technologies powered by Tattoo, has announced the extension of the contest to accommodate more entries from young Filipinos pushing for innovative solutions on social concerns via IT.

“With the influx of submissions we are receiving, we are pleased to announce that we will extend the contest until June 7, 2013, so as to give more opportunities to potential entries, and those who already have ideas to strengthen their proposals,” said Dong Ronquillo, Head of Tattoo Nomadic Broadband Business. “That being said, we highly encourage more of our socially-conscious and IT-savvy youth to take full advantage of their skills and knowledge, put them to fore for the benefit society at large,” he urged, adding that they should check out the Cat@lyst website, www.catalyst.com.ph, to take inspiration, know more about the campaign and sign-up for it on or before the extended deadline. Ronquillo pointed out that selected projects will be bestowed P200,000 cash grants for program development, mentorship, and ICT support and will be instituted as part of the regular activities of Globe Bridging Communities (BridgeCom), the corporate social responsibility arm of Globe Telecom. Along with the Global

Cat@lyst seeks to harness creativity, energy and technology to create change and empower the youth to make a difference in society. Shapers Manila Hub, ICT experts, development professionals and Globe BridgeCom will assist in implementing five chosen solutions for three months. Launched in early May, Cat@lyst seeks to harness creativity, energy and technology to create change and empower the youth to make a difference in society. In collaboration with Globe BridgeCom and the Global Shapers Manila, this initiative will also provide mentorship and ICT support to see through the ideation, distillation and

incubation of technologybased innovations useful to spur change in local communities. Cat@lyst entries from the youth ages 18 to 30 years old should revolve around the premise, “What do you want to see in the Philippines in the next five years?” “Through practicality and the use of mobile or web-based technologies, the proposed solutions should address pressing social issues such as pollution, traffic enforcement, crime prevention and health care, among many others,” Ronquillo said. As a guide, the criteria for selection will revolve around three “I’s:” Innovation, demonstrating creativity and originality; Implementation feasibility, that the project is doable in the given timeline and capable to mobilize stakeholders; and Impact, that it should provide a long-lasting solution to the existing problem. Some sample ICT projects where submissions may take inspiration from may be viewed in the Cat@lyst website, www.catalyst.com.ph. “True to our challenge to ‘be the start’ and ‘lead the

change,’ we encourage yet again our ICT-proficient young people to partner with us and be a real catalyst toward social change. Through this campaign of Tattoo together with a host of other stakeholders, we affirm our commitment to harness their capabilities to generate real solutions to real problems of the community,” told Bianca Gonzalez, Tattoo ambassador and an active member of Global Shapers. “We encourage them to take advantage of the extended submission date and be one of us in our advocacy as a Tattoo Catalyst.” Entrants can still download the application form via the Cat@lyst website and learn more about the contest. Completely-filled forms should be sent via e-mail to globalshapersmanila@gmail.com, along with a one-minute video to pitch their solution for an existing community problem using an .mp4 or .3gp format with a maximum file size of 20 Mb. Michael Douglas says throat cancer could have been caused by oral sex OK, Michael Douglas, you have our attention. The actor made a surprising statement while giving a (very) candid interview with the U.K.’s Guardian in reference to his throat cancer. When asked whether or not he now regretted his years of smoking and drinking, which are usual causes of such a disease, the celeb replied, “No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus.” The Behind the Candelabra star went on to say, “I did

worry if the stress caused by my son’s incarceration didn’t help trigger it. But yeah, it’s a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And

if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.” However, Douglas’ rep tells E! News, “He did not say this was the cause of his cancer. In a discussion of oral cancer, he said this is one of the suspected causes. He never made it personal.” Regardless, Dr. Drew Pinsky praised the actor (who has now been cancer free for two years after successful treatment) for what he said during the interview, tweeting, “Very courageous, will help reduce the risk for others.” And that concludes your impromptu sex-ed class for the night.

BACK TO THE FINALS

Heat overpower Pacers in Game 7 M

THEY’RE BACK TO THE FINALS. Miami Heat, starring its Big Three of Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Cris Bosh (top left), and the coaching genius of Fil-Am Eric Spoelstra (top right), has once again won the East Conference title (lower photo).

Kidd retires N

EW yOrK (AP) -- Jason Kidd became one of the best by making others better. He turned around a longtime-losing franchise, guided another to a championship, and helped his last one to its first division title since the year he came into the NBA 19 years ago. Teammates loved him. The U.S. national team needed him. But he looked more burned out than brilliant in the final weeks of the season, and on Monday he decided to end one of the greatest careers for a point guard in league history. ‘’My time in profes-

sional basketball has been an incredible journey, but one that must come to an end after 19 years,’’ Kidd said in a statement released by the New york Knicks. ‘’As I reflect on my time with the four teams I represented in the NBA, I look back fondly at every season and thank each and every one of my teammates and coaches that joined me on the court.’’ Kidd won an NBA title and two Olympic gold medals, is second on the career list in assists and

steals, and was a 10time AllStar. But he missed 22 of his 25 shots in the postseason and was scoreless in his final 10 playoff games shortly after turning 40, and decided to walk away with two years and more than $6 million left on the deal he signed last summer. His retirement comes two days after fellow 40-year-old Grant Hill, with whom Kidd shared rookie of the year honors in 1995, announced his retirement.

JASON KIDD. Finally ending a 19-year assists-loaded career.

IAMI (AP) -- Their season, their legacy, their reign atop the NBA was all at stake, and the Miami Heat responded in a manner befitting defending champions - with a blowout. LeBron James scored 32 points and grabbed eight rebounds, ailing Dwyane Wade matched his postseason high with 21 points, and the Heat ran away from the Indiana Pacers 99-76 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference series on Monday night. In the NBA Finals for the third straight year, the Heat will play the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 on Thursday in Miami. ‘’They’re just an amazing group of guys,’’ Heat managing general partner Micky Arison said after handing the East trophy to Chris Andersen. ‘’They’ve given us an incredible season so far, but it’s a long way from over.’’ It could have ended on Monday, of course. The Heat had alternated wins and losses with the Pacers in the first six games of the series, and were coming off their worst offensive outing of the year in

Game 6. They responded with a rout, despite shooting just under 40 percent, well below their norm. ‘’By any means necessary ... we took care of business,’’ James said. Miami led by as many as 28 points, a shocking amount for a series that had an aggregate score of Heat 569, Pacers 564 entering Monday night. The Heat actually trailed by six in the early going, were still down 21-19 after the first quarter and it was starting to look like it was starting to look like one of those down-tothe-wire nights. Not even close. ‘’you never want to take anything for granted,’’ Wade said. ‘’Being here three straight years in a row, going back to the finals, is an amazing feat. I’m just glad we were able to do it. Everything that happened in the first six games didn’t mean anything to us. It was about tonight. It was about Game 7. It was about finding a way to win here at home.’’ James exited with 5:08 left, shaking retired soccer star David Beckham’s hand as he made his way to the Heat bench for a relatively subdued celebration. Not long afterward, security personnel started what’s become a familiar task in Miami - surrounding the court and stretching out a yellow rope, preparing to hold people at bay for the looming oncourt trophy presentation.

P

ArIS (AP) -- Less than 48 hours after learning of the death of his childhood coach, Novak Djokovic was on court at the French Open, determined to complete a career Grand Slam in honor of the woman he likened to a ‘’second mother.’’ Still grieving, Djokovic began shakily Monday. Six of the match’s first seven unforced errors were his. After one poor exchange, he chucked his racket hard enough to break it. He dropped a set for the only time in four matches so far. After recovering quickly to dispatch 16th-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 and reach the quarterfinals at a 16th consecutive major tournament,

Djokovic spoke from the heart about the passing of Jelena Gencic, who was 76. ‘’It hasn’t been easy, but this is life. you know, life gives you things (but also) takes away close people,’’ Djokovic said. ‘’We were very close throughout my whole life, and she taught me a lot of things that are part of me, part of my character.’’ Gencic connected with a 6-year-old Novak at a tennis camp, then worked with him for five years. ‘’I feel even more responsible now to go all the way in this tournament,’’ said the No. 1-ranked Djokovic, who owns six Grand Slam titles but none from roland Garros. ‘’I want to do it for her.’’

ArIS (reuters) Maria Sharapova showed fast-rising American Sloane Stephens how it was done again to reach the French Open quarter-finals with a no-nonsense 6-4 6-3 victory on Monday. The russian was at her most clinical to seal a last-eight clash with old sparring partner Jelena Jankovic. While Sharapova made her breakthrough in stunning fashion by winning Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 2004, Stephens’s ascent has been more gradual and reaching the Australian Open semi-finals this year after beating Serena Williams has been the 20-yearold’s standout moment. “ is the new 17,” Sharapova told reporters. “I think she has a tremendous amount of potential. “There’s a lot of room for a few things to improve and I think she will. I think she has a big game. She has big strokes, a pretty good serve. “If she’s in the right hands at the right time,

I’m sure she’s gonna have a great career.” Defending champion Sharapova beat Stephens easily in rome in the build-up to roland Garros but Monday’s clash was a more competitive affair with nothing to separate the players in the opening six games on Chatrier. Sharapova then pounced as Stephens faltered on serve for the first time, converting her third break point. Stephens did break Sharapova’s serve in the second set but the russian world number two responded with two of her own. The only thing to worry Sharapova was the size of the birthday cake defending men’s champion rafa Nadal was presented with on court after his fourth-round win. “I saw Nadal finish his match, and that was a pretty cool cake he received,” said Sharapova who has started up her own candy company. “I was a little bit jealous. “He’s not 30 yet, he’s 27. He gets that great cake.”
