lOOMINg political crisis is what Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte foresees after a list of legislators involved in the pork barrel scam allegedly masterminded by Janet lim-Napoles was revealed on Tuesday by former Senator Panfilo lacson. Duterte told reporters last Wednesday that with the inclusion of several senators and congressmen in the list submitted by Lacson, the controversial list could breed people’s distrust in many leaders of a nation already reeling from power crisis and political bickering. According to Duterte, the “heat” brought about by the publication of the much-anticipated “Napolist” is as scorching as summer. “Init ang panahon sa tanan Pilipino , init,” he said. He said that the case
should be handled carefully because almost majority of the members of the Senate and a large number of members of the House of Representatives and heads of national agencies including those affiliated with President Aquino were dragged into the controversy. “Kung tinuod o dili ang tao pagtan-aw nila sa intstitution sa Congress medyo… its an institution, very important in our governance since it is one of the three branches of the government,” he said. eoPLe living with Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) who are confined in Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) have to make do with whatever available medicines as the delivery of some Anti-RetroViral (ARV) medicines has been reportedly delayed. Melvin Borres, executive director of Mindanao AIDS Advocate Association Inc., yesterday said in ‘I-Speak Media Forum’ at the Conference Room
in Davao City Hall that some of the 583 patients who avail of the treatment failed to take the right combination of medicines for a week. “Ang nahitabo man gud imbes dili to mao ang combinasyon na inumon sa isa ka client, para lang ma stop mao lang ang gihatag. So, dili gyud to mao ang accurate na tambal para sa iyaha,” he said. Borres said that persons living with AIDS have different dosage and combinations of
ARV medicines. “Klase- klase ang mga combination depende kung unsa ilang na experience na mga opportunistic infections. Pasabot, kung si client karon is naka experinece og Tuberculosis(TB) adunay mga certain an ARV na dili dapat ihatag sa ilaha. Kung aduna po’y na experience karon si client na… dili lang kay TB kung dili, like Pneumonia or unsa pa na mga pulmonary infections aduna po’y tama na ARV na ihatag sa
iyaha,” Borres pointed out. Borres said that there are some clients of HIV AIDS Core Team (HACT) treatment center in SPMC who took medicines even though not the ones prescribed. He however affirmed the earlier statement of Department of Health (DoH) -11 director Dr. Abdullah B. Dumama Jr. that there is no shortage in the stocks of ARV medicines. Borres said the hospital

DoLe 11 public information officer Sherwin Manual said there were 14 BPo companies who joined the job fair and each firm interviewed an average of 60 applicants. He cannot give the exact number
of applicants. Matunog said vacancies in the ICT-BPo industry are difficult to fill because of stringent requirements from the locators. “In hiring people in the BPo-ICT industry, locators consider the language proficiency, comprehension and IT literacy of the applicants and most new graduates lack these

Sales has warned the local banana industry players over the possible resurgence of Fusarium wilt or Panama disease after
el Niño. “Magiging maulan masayado pagkatapos ng el Niño and we know that water can be a channel to spread the disease,” he said. The government’s weather bureau has forecasted that a long dry spell will hit the country starting June until the first quarter of 2015. Sales cited related litera-
tures showing that the vector for Fusarium is water which also serve as a channel for the spread of the disease especially during flooding. “There might be a decline in the infection with the el Niño because you might experience drought or the level of water is low or no flooding but it will be worse after the drought season,” he
explained. Sales told reporters in an interview yesterday that Panama disease can easily spread from one plantation to others. “The spores can stick on the clothes on the sole of the shoes, that’s why it is important to have a quarantine program to control the spread of

by environment Secretary Ramon Paje. The memorandum specifically classified four caves in the area as Class II and two others as Class III formations. Republic Act (RA) 9072 or the National Caves and Cave Resources Management and Protection Act identified Class II caves as

Itinerant fiesta traders ejected
C
ASTILLo Apolonio, 60, had just finished displaying his goods for sale at the city plaza late Wednesday morning. But within minutes he was already packing them back into sacks and detaching his makeshift tent. Selling season turned out to be fleeing time. "We are worried of a lot of things ... lunch, cargo fees, among other things but we can't do anything," he said as he fills a big sack with plastic wares, which he brought from Maramag early in the morning to sell in time for the celebration of the city's parochial fiesta on May 15. Mayor Ignacio W. Zubiri ordered him and about a hundred other itinerant traders who came to display their wares to vacate the city plaza before noon. Zubiri told MindaNews the traders were illegal as they did not ask
consent from his office and did not obtain a special permit through the city licensing unit. He suspected that the traders, mostly from Maramag and Valencia, are organized and occupied the plaza with the prompting of a leader. The traders, despite protests, repacked their goods and uninstalled their makeshift tents and tarps in front of police, traffic, and other personnel from the city government. The mayor, who ordered them to clear the place before noon Wednesday, was seen fuming over a group of traders. He said his move is to enforce order in the city plaza. He said that city residents could no longer use the place for its intended purpose because it had been occupied by the traders. [Walter I. Balane / MindaNews]

In view of the wide marketability of the products made from the tetra packs, the sales of the association have tremendously increased since it started in 2011. The association generated majority of their sales from the trade fairs which they participated in. However, it cannot cope up with the escalating demand because of one main limitation – owning just one sewing machine. At present, the association only gets a monthly income of P8,000 from producing 300 pieces of bags, 900 garden pots, 300 organizers, 240 laundry bags, and 1,500 wallets. With DTI’s SSF program, the group was provided with two heavy-duty sewing machines. The association is expected to further innovate their products and triple their production volume, with the provision of additional sewing machines. It is anticipated that
by coming up with product innovations and by increasing their production volume, they will have a bigger opportunity to meet demands.
SSF seen to boost Toril’s handicraft productivity T
He provision of shared service facility (SSF) to a group of handicraft makers in Toril is expected to boost their productivity. The provision of SSF is an initiative of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) which aims to address the gaps and bottlenecks in the value chain. With this initiative, a common service production center, where micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMes) that need such facility can access, will be established. The Toril Kalambuan Association is a registered group with the Department of Labor and employment (DoLe). It is into the production of beautiful utility bags, wallets, folders and garden pots out of tetra packs. Waste tetra packs are collected instead of finding its way in the drainage which cause clogging or dumped in landfills. Further, the group has not only helped save the environment, it has also provided an additional source of income to garbage collectors in memorial parks,
The Davao City Field office (DCFo) of DTI revealed that the provision of additional equipment will help them generate three times the existing sales performance. Apart from the equipment, DTI is also committed to assist them in marketing their products. “The increasing awareness and call for us to save the environment has positively impacted on the demand for recycled products. Through this upcycled handicraft project of the association, we don’t only help save the environment but we also help their members earn more for their families,” DTI 11 officer-in-Charge Ma. Belenda Q. Ambi said. The Toril Kalambuan Association SSF project is part of the 51 SSF projects approved last year, which totaled to P24 million. [DTI 11/JenMendoza]

Multi-sector group supports national greening effort o
VeR 2,000 seedlings of hardwood trees will soon become forest foliage in this city’s upland area, as a multi-sector group conducted a tree planting activity last month in support to the National Greening Program (NGP). The City Government of Davao, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), and several other organizations led the planting of Narra, Molave, and Big-leaf Mahogany seedlings at a designated mini-watershed located in Sitio Upper Kibalang in Marilog Disrtrict. “We cannot be here forever. In fact, I am about to retire. By training members of the local community on how to take care of the environment, we hope that the knowledge will be kept and propagated among the people of this barangay,” said Martin obrero, supervising environmental specialist of the City environment and Natural Resources (CeNRo). He added that the seedlings planted in the mini-watershed would be taken care of by volunteers from the local community for a minimum period of three years to ensure
their survival and maturity into full-grown trees. The tree growing activity, which coincided with the city’s celebration of the 44th earth Day was also supported by volunteers from the local community, various offices of the city government, other national government agencies such as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and professional organizations like the Philippine Institute of Civil engineers (PICe). “We need similar collaborations that aim to rehabilitate our denuded forests and support us in our goal of protecting Mindanao’s environment while contributing to the targets of the NGP,” said MinDA Chairperson Luwalhati Antonino. NGP is a flagship project of the Department of environment and Natural Resources (DeNR) that aims to plant 1.5 billion trees covering 1.5 million hectares for a period of six years from 2011 to 2016. Apart from being a reforestation initiative, the program is also a climate change mitigation strategy that aims to increase the country’s forest cover to raise its capacity to

Of lists and nihilists
T
He surfacing of a number of lists of senators, congressmen and other government officials allegedly involved in the pork barrel scam masterminded by businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles has admittedly stirred the nation. Fortunately, the list, which already has mongrelized into many versions, is not considered gospel truth by Filipinos coming as it is from a woman already judged, rightly or wrongly, by the public as a felon whose words should not be believed. The list, one submitted by former senator Panfilo Lacson, and the other kept under wraps by Justice Secretary Lelia De Lima, could just be another antic of Napoles in an effort to sow chaos and confusion in a nation whose people already suspect her of robbing them billions of pesos in taxpayers’ money. Indeed, what is another fake list to a criminal mind capable of concocting elaborate scheme to steal people’s money. President Aquino himself was reported to have said there are many versions of the list which do not agree with each other and that some of his allies are listed. It will not be a surprise, therefore, if one of the spurious

lists will even include the name of the President himself, or somebody very close to him. That would perhaps be the day when lists will just be regarded a scrap of paper with no probative value. Maybe, when that time comes, Social Weather Stations and Pulse Asia would be needed to gauge the credibility of “Napolists” in a joint or separate surveys. What is fearsome though at any juncture of this sordid episode of our country’s history is the entry of some adventurists in the military and other armed groups to start a destabilization effort not unlike the series of putsches during the time of the late President Cory Aquino. Most of the grizzled putschists and the nation’s defenders who are still around remind Filipinos of the horrors of those dark days and nights of the power grab. We need not be reminded that the current President himself, at the time only a teener, was wounded in one of several coup attempts. We submit that this country has its fair share of nihilists who believe in violence in advancing change and reforms in governance. organized violence is one dangerous possibility when people are gullible enough to believe lists of dubious credibility.

That would mean less political point-scoring, grandstanding and self-aggrandizement, and more practical policymaking. our lawmakers will need to involve themselves in the affairs of government especially economic management, liberal social environment, infrastructure system, poverty alleviation, and maintenance of peace and order. Handling the responsibilities of a representative government is something that requires precious time and effort for our political leaders to learn. The question now is whether the present crop of lawmakers can learn quickly enough to leave a positive legacy that will transcend their terms. FoRMULATING PoLICIeS IN VIeW oF THe URGeNCy oF TACKLING THe CRISIS oF CoNFIDeNCe – The mystery behind the reprehensible Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) otherwise known as the “pork barrel” financial scandal deepens. Something unusual is happening in the course of the investigation of the incomparable fund mess that is eliciting public doubt. even so, doubts remain over whether the new Napoles’ lists or “Napolist” are all authentic. The lists - not just one, not two, but three are getting longer, and another one is coming out very soon, say inside sources. What did the oth-
W
er list providers think they hoped to accomplish by distributing unsigned draft affidavits to the Justice Department, Senate Blue Ribbon committee and investigating teams? Did they mean to show the incompetence of concerned government bodies in dealing with the brewing controversy? For its part, the DoJ justified only as genuine the list of some members of Congress enmeshed in the fund scam submitted by the whistleblowers notably Benhur Luy. The rest were considered mere pieces of papers and “worthless.” All this is expected, according to several past and present members of Congress including two allies of the Aquino administration with Cabinet portfolios who were implicated and added in the new “Napolist.” one thing very noticeable in the additional list is that the figures involved varied in numbers. At the very least, the problem is how effective is the new strategy will be in looking for the right patsy upon whom to fix the guilt. But some legal experts and political analysts viewed it this way: there’s a presumption that the new lists are potential evidence may be true, but the presumption that the lists are potential tools aimed at muddling the investigation is even truer. What’s flaky about the additional “Napolist” is that it has been presumed as a diversionary
tactic aimed at veering away the focus from the suspected mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles. More than that, even if it could be assured that the list providers are of reasonably sound mind and body, what’s to assure that the real intent and purpose are decent and truthful? one cannot think of a more emotional incitement to public resentment and anger than this ethically-clad kind of strategy – sort of mind conditioning – prompting the wary public into believing that the new lists actually are packs of evidence. It can be glean that the snail-pace progress of the investigation surrounding the PDAF fund mess puts pressure on the DoJ therefore it has to proceed quickly with its proposal, part of which is to stick to the previous voluminous evidence presented by the whistleblowers. It is not the unsigned draft testimonies that make the charges real, it is hard and concrete evidence. experts say the unsigned draft affidavits are no guarantee of success in a legal tossup, especially if it were provided by people who purportedly have an axe to grind with some of the officials allegedly embroiled in the fund controversy, or people who have a close link with the primary suspect. The PDAF issue affected badly our representative institution and numerous crucial legislative measures, meanwhile, have been stalled because it is in the never-ending investigation where all the energies of our lawmakers go. It was a misfortune not just for the political system and representative structure, but for all of us. The Aquino administration may have taken a low body blow, but it must continue formulating important policies in view of the urgency of tackling the crisis of confidence.
In today’s news, one size fits all
henever editors want to impose their will on a newsroom — be they editors at newspapers, magazines, news wires, websites, or Tv programs — they dictate a memo for distribution to their journalists noting that stories have gotten too long and instructing everybody to write shorter. It’s a frequent request, as editors come to believe that their reporters aren’t listening to them or are openly defying their requests to file more succinct copy. In recent days, top editors at my outlet, reuters, sent such a memo, asking writers in the Americas to diet their copy down to between 300 and 500 words. So did a top editor at the Associated Press, who set similar goals for his reporters and editors. Inspired by these bold moves, I’m sure that editors all over America have typed up their own shorter-is-better memos and are pressing send right now. (The reuters memo says the call for short copy is nothing new — it’s in the reuters handbook. The AP says it’s responding to requests of its members, who don’t have time to edit copy down.) The strong preference for short over long probably dates back to the invention of moveable type: The costs of printing make pagespace scarce and hence very valuable. The shorter you make each story, the more stories you can pack into the available space, and theoretically this leads to an informed and satisfied reader. Some editors preach for shorter stories because they think that’s the way to get the boring stuff out of the way. In the contemporary era, the leading proponent of the short stuff was Al neuharth, the auteur of Gannett Co.’s USA Today. “A maximum of facts in a minimum of words,” was neuharth’s founding formula in 1982, and “making reporters out of essayists” was his method.
ANAlYSIS By Jack Shafer Although derided by the competition as a McPaper peddling Mcnuggets, USA Today‘s relentless brevity found many imitators in the industry. By 1992, USA Today was noting with satisfaction an industry-wide trend toward shorter stories. By 1995, the Los Angeles Times was documenting the contraction of the “news hole” at the Chicago Tribune, which required reporters to write their pieces into tighter spots. Leonard Downie Jr. and robert G. Kaiser noted in their 2002 book, The News About the News, that by 2000 Tv network stories were also getting shorter. Perhaps the most dramatic victim of shrinky-dinkage was the Wall Street Journal in 2007 after rupert Murdoch took over, with the long, detailed, dripping-with-context Journal story becoming the exception rather than the rule. The shorter-stories dictate appeals to editors for the obvious space reasons. As has been observed by all, newspapers and magazines are thinner, so there is less tolerance for windup and more accent on the pitch. (The AP is owned by a consortium of newspapers, which use AP content. reuters sells content to newspapers.) Online, the space issue is irrelevant. But the demand for shorter copy also appeals to some editors because it’s easy to determine which reporters are obeying their orders and easy to enforce. All the editor needs to do to declare “mission accomplished” is drop the copy into a text editor and run a word-count on it. But nobody wants to read a story just because it’s short — we read in order to be enter-
tained or enlightened, and there is no software smart enough (yet!) to determine whether copy is entertaining or enlightening. In other words, editors call for shorter copy because it’s easy for them, and few ever get fired for imposing terseness on their writers. even USA Today abandoned its one-size-fits-all journalism by the mid-1990s after neuharth left and began to produce longer, substantive pieces. When I worked as an editor I frequently told my writers that their pieces would be twice as good half as long, so you might expect me to favor the shorts over the longs. But I generally preferred my writers to give me too much rather than not enough. Unless they gave me too much, how could I glean the proper context of their reporting? Unless they delivered facts and narrative in surplus, how could I decide what was important and was dross? When editors ask reporters to file shorter, they’re also asking reporters to relieve them of the hard work of assessing each story on its merits. Should it be expanded? Or reduced to a photo caption? Sometimes when editors tell me to write shorter, I later learn they’ve made that call because they don’t know the first thing about the topic and are too lazy or pressed for time to know what they really want. When that happens, and you file at the requested wordlength, it’s not uncommon for them to come back and ask why this subject and that subject weren’t covered in the piece. If editors were serious about shorter copy, which often takes more effort than longer stuff, they’d give their reporters more time. But I expect few editors to embrace that suggestion. entertainment and enlightenment comes in S, M, L, XL, and XXL. Only a fool or a rotten tailor would insist on dressing his clientele in something too tight.

Fighting for the future of conservatism COMMENTARY By NicholaS WapShott
e
Part 1 of 2
STABLISHMeNT Republicans have been delighted by the victory of Thom Tillis, their favored candidate in last week’s North Carolina primary. After expensive advertising campaigns by establishment bagmen like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Karl Rove’s American Crossroads, mainstream conservatives believe they have a candidate who can beat Democrat Kay Hagan to win a valuable Senate seat in November. Some commentators see Tillis’s triumph as a sign that other impending GoP primary races will also deliver electable candidates. Having watched the Senate slip from Republican grasp in 2012, as Tea Party candidates such as Todd Akin in Missouri, Christine o’Donnell in Delaware and Richard Mourdock in Indiana depicted the party as too extreme, they say the Tea Party is in retreat. Not so fast. The experience of conservative parties elsewhere suggests that when pragmatists triumph over dogmatists, the dogmatists either regroup and go on to overwhelm the moderates, eventually making the party their own. or they set up their own party — and trounce the moderates at the ballot box. That is happening in Britain. The Conservatives, once Britain’s natural governing party, find themselves about to be pressed into third place in the european Parliament elections. They will be runners-up not only to the Labor Party but also to the populist United Kingdom Independence Party, their ideological nemesis. Like the Tea Party, the Independence Party has set itself up as the true conscience of conservatism. There was a time when the european left was riven over dogma, with middle-ground Social Democrats jostling with hard-line Socialists. In Britain through the 1970s and 1980s, there was a three-way split, with middle-of-the-road Labor candidates noisily fending off assaults from the far left as well as Social Democratic reformers. This left Margaret Thatcher’s Tories free to win three elections in a row. In France the left was terminally split between the Socialists and the Communists — to the delight of the conservative Gaullists. In both Britain and France, the rift on the left has been healed. Having suffered defeat after defeat, the moderates galvanized themselves and either purged their ranks of unelectable dogmatic Socialists or, in France, put their Communist rivals out of business for good. Pragmatism finally triumphed over dogmatism. While the left was wising up, however, conservative parties on both sides of the Atlantic that used to win elections by giving short shrift to ideology began busily acquiring dogma. In Britain, the Tories abandoned centuries of pragmatism and embraced Thatcherism — a heady cocktail of free-market ideas, suspicion of foreigners and a strident dislike of the centralizing powers of the european Union. This is the British equivalent of states’ rights. In the United States, a first run at radicalizing the Republican Party was made by the libertarian-minded Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, who won the GoP presidential nomination in 1964 but was trounced by President Lyndon B. Johnson. In defeat, the ultraconservatives did not give up. They instead transferred their affections to Ronald Reagan, an acceptable face of ideological conservatism who won the presidency twice in a row. Both Reagan and Thatcher introduced into their previously practical parties a market-based doctrine. They began lauding the works of Austrian economists, Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek, and University of Chicago economists, in particular Milton Friedman. Thatcher was so ardently committed to textbook conservatism, she used to hand out a book list to her Cabinet. She even had Friedman teach them a lesson in monetarism. For those who wondered where Reagan’s ideas came from, he referred them to his decades of Saturday radio broadcasts. There he had laid out the tenets by which he thought the United States should be governed.

Petilla cited the electric cooperative’s decision to utilize modular generator sets which is as one of the short-term solutions which is being pushed to mitigate the power supply deficiency in Mindanao. Meanwhile, Sta. Cruz Mayor Joel Ray Lopez has also shared that the additional power supply from Hedcor’s hydropower plant would give assurance to the business sector especially in his town which is an industrial area. He said, aside from the power benefit, Hedcor’s projects have also brought various forms of assistance
to the local government unit and to the host communities especially to the Bagobo-Tagabawa tribe. The mayor cited the 30-kilometer road network going to Mt. Rogelio Manapol, chieftain of the Bagobo-Tagabawa Unified Ancestral Domain, was thankful for the power development introduced in their community and all other benefits “extended to our people in the form of royalties, basic social services, infrastructures, water system development, bridges and many others.” “It is rest assured that the indigenous people within the Bagobo-Tagabawa Unified Ancestral Domain, especially the leaders are strongly supporting the projects considering that it does not only benefit the IP community, but also do good to the LGU in trying to solve power crisis in the country, especially in Davao del Sur,” the tribal chieftain stated. 74,000-hectare farms to go organic C

Proposed P7-M facility to boost banana industry in Mindanao
T
He Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) here is establishing a P7-million facility for research and development particularly on banana and its value-added products. The innovation facility will initially be established in a five-hectare area in Barangay Kapoc, Matanao, Bansalan, Davao de Sur with construction to start next month. SPAMAST president Dr. Irvin Generalao said it has a funding support from the Commission on Higher education (CHeD) to promote the Philippine standards or good agricultural and manufacturing practices on banana. He said it also aims to strengthen the capability of the school's faculty and students in research and development and the delivery of its extension services. The country's banana exports, Generalao said, is the biggest export product in the world yet despite the relatively good export performance of banana industry in recent years, banana producers and
exporters in Mindanao are still beset by growing demand for higher quality bananas abroad. “Diseases such as Fusarium wilt and Black Sigatoka as well as phytosanitary issues are among these challenges that the banana industry must hurdle in order to meet the growing demand for banana in the international market,” he said. on the other hand, he said the domestic demand for local varieties such as "saba," "lakatan" and "latundan" is increasing even as he said that there is lack of supply for local banana varieties. Generalao said the facility will hopefully contribute to efforts that will address the challenges of the banana industry not just in the province of Davao del Sur but in the whole of Mindanao. The facility is furnished with equipment required by the Philippine Good Agricultural Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices and will serve as a demo-farm for experts on banana diseases and production, Generalao added. DA-12 regional technical director for research and regulations and currently the regional organic agriculture program focal person, said that the regional office is committed to reaching its target. “Region 12 has a total agricultural area of 1,497,083 hectares, and if we get five percent of it, we have at least 74,000 hectares as our target to be converted into organic by 2016,” Director Natividad explained. He added that this mandate is adherent to Republic Act 10068 otherwise known as the organic Agriculture Act of 2010 which institutionalized
the adoption and propagation of organic agriculture in the country. Said law was principally authored by Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala. “This year, DA central office had allotted almost P20 million to continuously step-up organic farming initiatives in the region,” he added. In 2013, according to Natividad, DA 12 led by Regional executive Director Amalia Jayag-Datukan, had efficiently utilized its P21-million fund allocation by establishing vermicomposting facilities and organic trading posts. “DA 12 oAP Team had
organized 47 local technical committees among cities and municipalities as well as the four provinces of the region,” he said in a statement. The regional office also conducted writeshops to partner local government units and civil society organizations and formulated prototypes that can be used to facilitate the preparation of project proposals and endorsed 33 project proposals. “We also sponsored training which were attended by local government units, non-governmental organizations, and people’s organiza-
tions that have availed of projects from organic Agriculture Program,” Natividad added. He also disclosed that DA 12 facilitated the Tupi Balangon Growers’ Association (TUBAGA) to resume exporting organic banana Balangon to Japan of 729 metric tons (approximately 16,200 kilograms/week) valued at P12.2-M. This year, he said that the regional office commissions its research outreach stations to formulate prototypes for the production of organic vegetables, corn, soybeans, legumes and cowpeas. [PNA]

The opening of eChOstore could not have come at a more opportune time in our bustling city as the clamor for a cleaner, healthier way of life and artisanal goods has been making itself increasingly felt. Local licensee Sarah Claudio and her family welcomed friends and family to peruse eChOstore and eChOmarket while the appetizing offerings from eChOcafé were offered to guests as refreshment. eChOstore founder Chit Juan delivered rousing welcome remarks, resonating passion and thrill at the revealing of their new base in Mindanao. The opening of an eChOstore is all about nurturing it from the ground up. It is a social enterprise at its core, as the founders Jeannie Javelosa, Reena Francisco and Chit like to say. If their passions and advocacies are anything to go by, it is something that the Claudio family would be led to eventually even if they didn’t know it yet. Echostore...FFROM A1 in Gawad Kalinga’s projects for as long as she can remember. having roots with such a fostering organization made such an imprint on Sarah that something immediately clicked when she walked by eChOstore’s branch in Fort Bonifacio. Although it was a fleeting thought at that time, seeing the flagship space of this “store with a big heart” concretized the kind of business she always dreamed of having. She further explored this inclination when she signed up for the Social Business Summit held at the GK enchanted Farm in Bulacan last October 2013. Fueled by fellow advocates and seeing the Davao market ready for this retail concept, she took a chance and sent an e-mail inquiry to Chit. The rest, as they say, is history. Products with ecofriendly ingredients and those made with sustainable production practices are staged in eChOstore’s
shelves. Though eChOstore is a hybrid “for-profit,” their mission clearly states that community needs through fair trade practices are met first before owners take the rest of the bounty for profits. Artisans are also given the chance to showcase their products even with their limited production capacities. “We wanted a business that could help promote our local product and crafts,” Jeannie says. “We want to preserve the local culture while helping producers, mostly women, up the value chain of their chosen produce or commodity.” Clearly, their hearts are in the right place and have led them to a bounty of food and body products that shine in their uniqueness and have meaningful stories behind them. The interaction with the communities whose products they support is ongoing and it is this spirit of openhandedness that eChOstore’s founders

Now that they have a new base in the southern region, this is beginning to include Mindanao as well. eChOsi Foundation Treasurer Ricky Cruz recently came from Davao to sign a partnership with the Mothers for Peace Foundation that will bring eChOsi’s program to help women in Mindanao’s conflict zones with their products. Sarah and her sister-in-law Noelle are just as excited to be part of the Mindanao based programs of eChOsi Foundation. They hope that they can eventually hold teaching lectures and product assessments in eChOstore in the days to come, helping to build awareness and a greater social consciousness among its clients as well. eChOstore takes social immersion to a wholly different level. “We are excited to share what we believe in and what we learned from the eChOstore founders,’ says Sarah Claudio. “It’s Davao’s time to shine as a center of sustainable living in the South.” eChOstore, eChOcafe and eChOmarket is located in Lenel Building (beside Robinsons highlands) along Diversion Road. Tanaka tosses 4-hitter NeW yoRK (AP) — Masahiro Tanaka has been every bit the ace the New york yankees went shopping for last winter. Tanaka pitched a four-hitter for his first major league shutout and the yankees got home runs from yangervis Solarte and Mark Teixeira on Wednesday night, snapping a four-game skid with a 4-0 victory over the Mets. “overall, I think that today was my best day,” Tanaka said through a translator. Brian Roberts tripled twice and the yankees finally beat their crosstown rivals after dropping six straight meetings. The Mets took all four Subway Series games last year and won two slugfests in the Bronx this week. Back home at spacious Citi Field, however, their bats went silent again. “you asked me about the home run barrage? We hit three of them tonight. They were just in the wrong park,” manager Terry Collins said. Tanaka (6-0) overwhelmed the Mets with his vast assortment of pitches while spoiling Rafael Montero’s big league debut. The latest to arrive in a line of touted Mets pitching prospects, Montero threw six competitive
innings but was no match for the $155 million rookie from Japan. “In some ways, this is a David-and-Goliath matchup. one guy’s never lost and the other guy’s never pitched,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said before the game. “So, it’s interesting. We’ll see how many rocks Rafael’s got.” Not enough. Tanaka is 34-0 combined in Japan and North America over his last 42 regular-season starts. He did lose Game 6 of the Japan Series last year — before earning a save in Game 7. “I just go up there and basically try to win every single game,” Tanaka said. The right-hander struck out eight and walked none, throwing 114 pitches during his first complete game in the majors. He lowered his eRA to 2.17 and gave the yankees’ taxed bullpen a much-needed break. “I knew what was coming, but I couldn’t hit it,” Daniel Murphy said. “He’s commanding all his pitches to all zones. The splitter is the equalizer. you don’t see it that much, someone using it in any count like that.”
Tennis stars switch on hi-tech racquets in time for Wimbledon L
MAIN MAN. Rafael Nadal uses the Babolat raquets.
oNDoN (Reuters) - A handful of the world’s best tennis players will show up at tournaments within weeks armed with new technology they hope will give them an advantage at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the man behind the ‘smart racquets’ has told Reuters. Without identifying the players who would be first to wield the hi-tech weapons, eric Babolat confirmed “connected racquets”, with sensors feeding back information on the players’ forehands, backhands and much more besides, would be swung in anger for the first time, after a decade in development. “It could be any week. We have a lot of players testing. It is going to happen very soon,” Babolat told Reuters in an interview at Britain’s National Tennis Centre in south-west London. “It is a question of days, not months.” Declared legal by the guardians of the sport, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), who adopted a new rule covering the technology at the start of the year, selected Babolat racquets will feature data-collecting sensors in their handles, “Quite simply, this is information like we have
never been able to get before,” smiled Babolat, scion of the French tennis manufacturing empire built out of a 19th century family business making sausage skins, surgical sutures and piano strings from animal gut. “It is information direct from the racquet, from the string bed, and it tells us exactly what is happening, not just a feeling from the player. “INCREDIBlE TO IMAgINE” “For me it was incredible, that you can take the number one tennis player in the world (Rafa Nadal) and see that he doesn’t really know anything about what is happening in his racquet, apart from his feel. He has no data about anything, and it is incredible to imagine. “It is like you are a Formula one driver and you don’t know how fast you are driving and you don’t know...” Babolat trailed off, shaking his head. “It is a bit unbelievable, but it is like that. “No longer”, the Ceo and chairman of the French business said. In essence, the technology-loaded racquets collect data such as shot power and ball impact location along with the number of strokes, the level of spin imparted, total play time, endurance, technique, consistency, energy and rallies. The information is transmitted through bluetooth to smartphones or tablets where players
and coaches can analyze and share their data with other analysts and online communities. ex-pro and former coach of Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, Mark Petchey says the new technology has “limitless potential”. “It has the potential to change the way we think about coaching,” Petchey told Reuters. “From analyzing the data, in one match or over several, you can analyze your player’s shot selection, you can see if your player is playing with too much variety or not enough variety, or maybe not playing to their strengths, maybe being a little too defensive. lIFE IMITATINg ART “From a power point of view, you can see the effort level that your player is putting in. And you can’t cheat it because it is there in black and white in terms of the stats coming out.” Babolat said the technology had been developed over 10 years by more than 50 technicians, scientists and researchers. The data’s importance to the elite would appear obvious in a sport where millions of dollars are invested in training and technology to gain an edge. But in a curious case of life imitating art, Babolat also says a major benefit of the “connected racquet” will be the “gamification” of tennis and the added appeal for new generations.
“I had one guy come up to me who said ‘I love tennis, and I love video games -- you have combined my worlds’,” he said. “With this, you can compete against your friends in more than just a conventional game of tennis. you can compare your shots - against the professionals as well as against your friends. “you will be able to see the data which could tell you you should do this and that. For example the racquet can tell people who think they are hitting a lot of topspin that in fact they are flatter than they think. From this information you can start to do things, but without information it is just...” he shrugs. Babolat said that the vision had been consistent for some time, but that they had been waiting for the technology to mature and develop. once that happened, the route to approval had been quick. DIZZYINg PACE “We realized what we had developed would not be allowed in tournaments so we went to the ITF,” Babolat said. “I was afraid the ITF would say, ‘no this is not in the spirit of tennis’, but I was surprised. “We were not pushed back at all on this. The only restriction is on the coaching rule. We are not allowed to have live information go to the player on court because we have to respect the no coaching rule.

THEY’RE CLOSINGSpursINoust hEAT in East Finals IAMI (AP) -- LeBron James leaped onto a courtside table as the postgame celebration was starting, thumped his chest and punched the air. James scored 29 points, Dwyane Wade added 28 and Ray Allen delivered two huge plays in the final seconds as the Heat rallied to beat the Brooklyn Nets 96-94 on Wednesday night, winning the second-round matchup 4-1. ‘’It’s always been like that for us,’’ James said. ‘’It’s never easy. It’s never easy for us.’’ Sure looks easy, though. It was the 10th straight series win for the two-time defending NBA champions. ‘’When we met the first day for prep we said the No. 1 key, overwhelmingly the No. 1 key in this series, was great mental stability,’’ Heat coach erik Spoelstra said. ‘’That’s what it was down the stretch ... incredible focus.’’ Incredible defense, too, when it was needed most. Down by eight with less than five minutes left, the Heat forced Brooklyn into nine straight missed shots while peeling off a 12-0 run to take the lead. Allen’s 3-pointer off an assist by Mario Chalmers with 32 seconds remaining was the go-ahead moment, and the Heat wouldn’t trail again. Allen disrupted Joe Johnson’s dribble on the game’s final play, James then swatted the bouncing ball out of everyone’s reach, time expired - and the Heat advanced. ‘’Give the Heat credit,’’ Nets coach Jason Kidd said. ‘’They were attacking there in the fourth quarter. We were attacking. Both teams were attacking. They made plays, they made shots and we didn’t.’’ Chris Bosh scored 16 and

It’s the sixth trip to the east title series in the last 10 seasons for Miami, which is bidding for a fourth straight trip to the NBA Finals - something only the Lakers and Celtics franchises have accomplished. James is heading to the east finals for the sixth time in eight seasons, the first two of those trips coming with Cleveland in 2007 and 2009.
The Heat will next face either fifth-seeded Washington or top-seeded Indiana. The Pacers lead that series 3-2, one win away from setting up a rematch with Miami that seemed like an absolute certainty for much of the season. ‘’obviously, we thought this was a game we should have won,’’ Johnson said. Brooklyn led 49-42 at the half, with Miami missing 15 of its first 16 tries from 3-point range. The Nets closed the half on an 8-0 run and the lone bright spot in the opening 24
Kerr spurns Knicks, agrees to coach Warriors
o
AKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The Golden State Warriors are taking another chance on a television analyst and former NBA guard who has never been a head coach at any level. The Warriors won the bidding war with the New york Knicks for Steve Kerr on Wednesday, hiring him away from the TNT broadcast table to be their coach. Kerr agreed to a five-year, $25 million deal with Golden State, said his agent, Mike Tannenbaum. The Warriors confirmed the agreement Wednesday night and said they will introduce Kerr at a news conference after the contract is complete. Kerr had been in talks with the Knicks about becoming their coach since Phil Jackson took over as team president in March. He won three titles playing for Jackson in Chicago and another two under Gregg Popovich in

Kerr told NBA.com, which first reported the agreement, that going to Golden State ‘’just felt like the right move on many levels.’’ He said his daughter plays volleyball nearby at the University of California,
Berkeley, his oldest son is in college in San Diego and his youngest son is a junior in high school. Kerr called the offer to coach the Knicks a ‘’tantalizing’’ opportunity. He said it was ‘’agonizing’’ to say no to Jackson ‘’because of what I think of him and what he’s done for my career.’’ ‘’I told Phil, ‘I think I have to pursue this other opportunity,’’’ Kerr told the website. ‘’He gave me his blessing. He said. ‘Go look at it, and do what was in my heart.’’’ Kerr, 48, said last month that he has wanted to coach since stepping down after three seasons as general manager of the Phoenix Suns in June 2010. And while the lure of rebuilding a flagship franchise with his mentor at Madison Square Garden looked appealing, the chance to coach a Western Conference contender in his home state proved to be too much.
minutes for Miami was Wade, who had 20 points - more than any other two players to that point combined - on 7-for-12 shooting. ‘’He has a way, right? He’s a playoff warrior,’’ Spoelstra said. eventually, barely, Miami broke through. But it took most of the second half to get there, since whenever Miami tried to put together a run Brooklyn found a way to keep things together. A layup from James late in the third got the Heat within three; a minute later, the mar-
gin was eight again. - A free throw from James with 9:03 left cut Brooklyn’s lead to 77-73; less than a minute later, it was 82-73 after a 3-pointer by Pierce. - A 3-pointer by Bosh made it a four-point game again; two Brooklyn possessions and zero Miami stops later, it was 86-78 after a sensational step-back jumper by Johnson. And when Johnson connected on another tough shot with 4:49 left, it was 91-83 and the Nets could sense that the night would be theirs.

AN ANToNIo (AP) -Danny Green and Kawhi Leonard each scored 22 points, and the San Antonio Spurs overcame an injury to Tony Parker to close out the Western Conference semifinals with a 104-82 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night. Patty Mills scored 18 points and Tim Duncan had 16 points and eight rebounds for San Antonio, which had four blowout victories in the five-game series. It’s the third straight conference finals appearance for San Antonio, which lost a heartbreaking seven-game series to the Miami Heat in last season’s NBA Finals. San Antonio, which had the NBA’s best record, will await the winner of the series between oklahoma City and the Los Angeles Clippers. The Thunder have a 3-2 lead. LaMarcus Aldridge had 21 points for Portland, while Damian Lillard added 17 points and 10 assists. The Trail Blazers’ bench contributed only seven points compared to 40 by the Spurs’ reserves. After playing with various injuries throughout last postseason, the Spurs had been healthy in these playoffs until Wednesday. Parker, who missed 13 games during the regular season, exited in the first half with tightness in his left hamstring. After returning to the court with 9:46 remaining in the second quarter, Parker left the game exactly a minute later. He headed back to the locker room followed closely by San Antonio general manager R.C. Buford and team physician, Dr. Paul Saenz. Parker was scoreless in 10 minutes, missing his only two shots as Portland pushed to keep the All-Star point guard out of the paint. Manu Ginobili handled most of the ball-handling duties with Parker out. even with Parker slowed, the Spurs still had another good start thanks to their hustle on the boards. Tiago Splitter had two offensive rebounds in the opening 3 minutes. The Spurs, who were averaging 9.3 offensive rebounds in the postseason, had five in the first quarter alone. The Blazers went on a 9-0 run once Splitter exited, with Aldridge benefiting the most from the big man’s absence. He hit a pair of jumpers over Boris Diaw for his first points of the game to spark the run. Mills provided a huge spark even before Parker’s exit.

RoLIFIC-shooter Christopher “Bong” Go hit a dozen threepoint shots to lead the City Mayor’s office past Philippine Navy, 99 – 94, and grab its seventh win in a row in the ongoing Davao Summer Sports for Peace Festival AFP-PNP Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at the Davao City Recreation Center (Almendras) Gym. Go finished the game with tournament-high 45 points in a splendid performance highlighted with his torrid shooting
that proved to be the fatal blow to the Navymen. Playing a key role in the CMo’s seven game winning streak dating back April 29, the sweet-shooting executive assistant of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, poured in 21 baskets in the pivotal second period as the Mayor’s men rallied from a five points down all the way to a 54 – 43 lead at the end of first half. Bigman Weng Farochillen and Roy Bangkas chipped in 13 and 10 respectively for the Mayor’s men who ballooned the gap to 16, 80 – 64, entering the pay off period. The Navymen fought hard in the last canto, pulling off frightening rally behind Ayon-ayon and De Luna, to cut the deficit to single digit less than five minutes to go. But the Mayor’s men handled the Navymen’s pesky fightback with great poise, answering back with critical baskets and defensive plays.
Ayon-ayon paced the winless Navy with 31 points. De Luna had 25. The win enable CMo to hold tight at solo second with 7 – 1 behind Bureau of Fire Protection with 4 – 0 record. At third place was Davao City Police office with 4 – 1 card. Meanwhile, Police Regional office-XI snapped a two-game skid with 100 – 65 win against Philippine Airforce. Gaffud, Blanco and Moral combined for 43 points for PRo which improved to 3-2 winloss card. Chok Gacayan had 31 for PAF that remained winless in five outings. 10th Infantry Agila Division defeated Regional Public Safety Batallion, 90 – 77, to keep its hopes alive to enter the next round. The win improved 10th ID’s record to 3 – 3. RPSB dropped to 2 – 5. [Rico Biliran]
