restrictions that limit the movement of people who love to enjoy nocturnal activities and vices. However, the city government will continue to work closely with the business sector saying his administration is obsessed with making the city tourism and investment-friendly. The mayor discussed standing policies and local ordinances with businessmen attending the grand launch of the newly renovated office of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc, (DCCCII) along J. P. Laurel Avenue in Bajada last Friday. The businessmen and women were led by John Gaisano Jr. and Antonio dela Cruz, DCCCII chairman and president. Aside from members and current officers of the chamber, past presidents and chairmen of the multi-awarded business group were present during the launch. “Alam ko nawala ang nightlife natin dito (I know that we no longer have a nightlife to speak of in the city to speak of here), Duterte said. “But the environment is good; we have a quiet and peaceful city; that’s what we have now,” he added. He told the traders that it is not true that the early ban on drinking has destroyed the tourism business of the city. He said a studied have been conducted and it was found that generally tourists don’t stay up to the wee hours of the morning
drinking. “It’s the locals, especially the young people, who want to go out at night and drink who are affected, he said. “But they can always go to nearby cities like Samal and Panabo, if they want to enjoy. He said the city continues to look for ways to improve the services of the city government to the Dabawenyos, “because we consider ourselves as your public servants, your employees who are paid by you. The mayor encourage the business sector, through the DCCCII, to bring up their suggestions and opinions about the situation in the city, specially on how the city is being governed. The launching of the newly renovated chamber building marks another milestone for the DCCCII, which is currently this year’s most outstanding chamber in the Philippines. One of the highlights of the event According to Dela Cruz, the “beautifully redesigned interior” of the building is dedicated to the public as they are given an opportunity to serve the economy of the city in an improved corporate environment. “This is an organization built on trust, accountability, transparency, camaraderie, and commitment towards serving the business community, fueled by the vision to improve the economic, civic, and social welfare of Davao City,” he said
during his introductory speech at the ceremony. Dela Cruz also emphasized that their voluntary association of business and professional men and women has grown into one of the most prominent chambers of commerce not only in the country, but the whole of Asia and Pacific and even the world. “Davao chamber has been the catalyst of development in agricultural, industrial, trade and commerce, and professional and service sectors, paving the way to addressing the issues and concerns that serve as challenges in the advancement of the business economy,” he said. The newly renovated building is comprised of the new board room, presidential room, and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) which are open to all businesses that are interested in renting office spaces, holding meetings, and conducting conferences. The board room can cater 30 people may be rented by DCCCII members and CUBE members under the SBDC for P4,000 (half-day) and P6,500 (whole day) or non-members and co-working clients for P5,000 (half day) and P8,000 (whole day). The presidential room can cater 10 people and may be rented by DCCCII members and CUBE members under the SBDC for P3,200 (halfday) and P4,800 (whole
day) or non-members and co-working clients for P4,000 (half day) and P6,000 (whole day). The SBDC holds a total of 35 office spaces ranging from 4 to 9 square meters. Small businesses may rent these office spaces daily, monthly, and yearly. Prices depend on the rental space and duration. The business center also has a meeting room that can cater 20 people may be rented by DCCCII members and CUBE members under the SBDC for P2,800 (halfday) and P4,000 (whole day) or non-members and co-working clients for P3,500 (half day) and P5,000 (whole day). The DCCCII invites everyone to be the partners of the city government and voice of the business community, not only for Davao but for Mindanao as a whole. They hope that these new offices will encourage all business sectors to not only become active but to bring in more members as well. During the ceremony, Lim also shared his perception of the newly renovated building with the guests who attended the event. “Your office is not only new because of its renovation or new staff, but more importantly, a new direction with a renewed partnership with very important partners. The CUBE of the new SBDC is the new face of micro and small enterprise (MSE). It has now come back with a vegenance,” he said.

HE Philippine government on Saturday condemned the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, and urged the international community to hold those behind the “unconscionable” act accountable. In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs also conveyed its “profound condolences” for all who died in the tragedy - three of them, Filipinos. “It is of utmost importance that the international community come together to help determine those who are responsible for this brutal act against a civilian airliner in civilian airspace,” it said. The DFA said those responsible “should be made
fully accountable for this unconscionable assault on a non-military aircraft that posed no threat whatsoever to any party.” The DFA added the international community should take concerted action to help reduce such tragedies all around the world. “States and non-state elements in dispute should exercise restraint, respect international law, and search for the peaceful resolution of disputes,” it added. ERSONS with hemophilia (PWH) in the city continue to suffer from the debilitating disease because of lack of support from the government, both local and national. This is according to Dr. Jeanie Ong, hematologist from Southern Philippine Medical Center (SPMC). Dr. John Addison Rowel, hematologist from Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital in Australia, said hemophilia is a bleeding disorder that slows down the normal process of blood clotting. It happens when the X chromosome of the mother has deficiency of Factor 8, a
protein needed for the process of blood clotting. Statistics shows that there is a single person suffering from hemophilia in every 10,000 population. It is common among males and passes through each generation in the family. Ong said that programs of Department of Health (DOH) are not enough to help the families of these patients. “May government hospital at mga doctors tayo pero walang gamot for their treatment,”Ong said, adding that there are more than 400 PWHs in Davao City

JEALOUS common-law wife and two other persons weresentenced to suffer life imprisonment after the court found them guilty of conspiring to kill a former Davao City councilor last 2004. Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 13 Acting Judge Rowena Apao-Adlawan convicted Armando P. Buboli, Roberto B. Pondoyo and Estela Saligumba for the murder of Renato V. Galope, who served as city councilor for several terms
in the 90’s. Galope also served as chief of the city security unit under Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte. The court found that there was treachery and evident premeditation which are generic aggravating circumstances in the commission of the crime. The court said that the accused executed the crime without risking themselves arising from the defense which Galope might make. “The manner of attack which is, while Galope was at the driver’s seat to start

Binay obtained a plurality or 41 percent of the votes of 1,200 respondents in Pulse Asia’s survey on the Filipinos’ presidential preferences for 2016. The survey was conducted from June 24 to July 2. This was slightly higher than the 40 percent rating he received in Pulse Asia’s March 19-26 poll. Sen. Grace Poe came in

The court said that while the former councilor was already wounded from the stab wounds, he walked towards the garage of his house but Pondoyo shot him in the back. “As a matter of fact, it can be deduced that Pondoyo has already predetermined the usual routine of the victim,” the court said. It said Pondoyo was
prepared to kill the victim. “It was at the admission of Pondoyo that they were only supposed to use knife to kill Galope to avoid any commotion,” the court said. It is stated in the decision that the statement alone shows how the accused planned the killing in its most simplest term. Aboitiz power barge down for repairs By aRManDO B. FEnEQUITO JR. abf@edgedavao.net

HERMA Marine Inc. (TMI), a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corp., reported that one of its power barges, specifically the one in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte is down for repairs. In a statement, TMI president and chief operating officer Jose Venancio P. Batiquin said the repairs
on one of its camshafts will take three weeks. “Our teams are working round-the-clock to be able to bring the engine back to operation again,” Batiquin said in the statement. This means the Mobile 2 barge in Nasipit will only be able to produce as much as 50 MW, the statement clarified.
“If operating fully, TMI barges in Nasipit and Maco, Compostela Valley combine for 200 MW of power. It serves more than 20 distribution utilities and electric
cooperatives in Mindanao,” he said. The power barge has been operating lately as more of a baseload plant with Mindanao experienc-
ing an acute shortage in power. Some 90 percent of Therma Marine’s power rates to its customers are for fuel costs, which is a
pass through rate. The remaining 10 percent covers the capital recovery, maintenance, salaries, spare parts costs, among others.
Philexport backs institutionalizing Central Bank’s Credit Surety Fund
T
HE Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. (Philexport) supports the bill of Senator Bengino Paolo “Bam” Aquino IV of institutionalizing the Credit Surety Fund (CSF) program of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) which aims for easier access to finance for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). “Addressing these issues is very critical, as it can spell the entry, expansion, success or closure of MSMEs that are more and more turning to informal lending to respond to their funding requirements,” Philexport president Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis Jr. said. Ortiz-Luis also noted that making the CSF into law will allow MSMEs to get loans even they are lacking with collateral. Aquino’s Senate Bill 2218 aims to institutionalize the CSF in which contributions from well-managed cooperatives and non-government organizations (NGOs), local government units (LGUs), and government financial institutions like Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP), and Industrial Guarantee and Loan Fund (IGLF) will substitute as a collateral for MSMEs to borrow money from

lending banks. Institutionalizing the CSF will make the LGUs to commit in allocating financial contributions for the sustainability of the program. Philexport has recommended that the financial contributions of LGUs must be declared as grants, and not as an investment, in order to avoid conflicts since LGU officials’ terms expire. The central bank’s CSF program has 8,421 beneficiaries and has approved a total loan of Php 1.121 billion as of March 2014. The BSP also established a total of 30 CSFs nationwide. “We agree with the recognition that government plays a vital role in encouraging, promoting and institutionalizing a national program that will allow MSMEs and business cooperatives to obtain easier access to credit from banking institutions under a win-win situation such as what the CSF offers,” Ortiz-Luis said. “After all, these government agencies clearly benefit from MSMEs through jobs, taxes, licenses and registration fees generated from (increased) economic activities by these MSMEs in their respective areas,” Philexport also noted. TTENTION to details is what differentiates Damosa Land, Inc. (DLI) from other real estate developers. Holding a turnover ceremony for new residents, for one, is something that Damosa Land puts a great deal of time and effort into. For DLI, it is essential to give their homeowners only the best, starting from the time they set foot in their new home. “We wanted to make sure that our homeowners feel that they are coming home to a welcoming community, not just in Damosa Fairlane but to all of Damosa Land communities. The turnover is a small gesture but we believe it’s the littlest things that count,” said Alex Gocotano, AVP for Damosa Land, whose constant presence during turnover ceremonies assures new residents that there is always a familiar face around. Damosa Land, a homegrown real estate and property developer that developed the Damosa District and recently, Damosa Fairlane, has already turned over 11 houses in the last few months. One of the homeowner’s perks is a housewarming treat where Damosa Land formally hands over to them the keys that will open
the doors to their new home. However, even the keys don’t come alone as homeowners are also provided with a key-holder and a booklet of homeowner guidelines in a custom-made box made of handwovent’nalak fabric. To add flavor to the turnover gifts are prosperity items such as salt, grains and water, all symbolic of what the homeowner needs for a bountiful life at our communities. Adding color to the table is a basket of fruits, wine and bread to wish the homeowners a happy and healthy life. Because it is a cause for celebration to start fresh in a new home, Damosa Land prepares all of these items and gathers the homeowners and their closest friends and relatives to an intimate celebration of food and music. “We understand how valuable every house is for the homeowners because this is an investment where they put their hard-earned money. Thus, we place just as much importance in what we do for our homeowners. One of the many things we do is the house turnover ceremony to show them that we care. We want them to feel that their purchase is not only an asset but also something that brings

quality life for them and their family,” said Cary Lagdameo, VP for Damosa Land Residential. As a community builder, Damosa Land understands how important it is for a family to come home to a relaxed environment that allows quality time and other simple pleasures that everyone would truly love to indulge. Overlooking these little things in life is missing the biggest part of life itself.
“We know that being keen to simple details can make a huge difference to our valued homeowners and that is why we take exceptional care of these little things. This is going beyond what is needed to make sure everyone in the community experiences life to the fullest,” Lagdameo added. Damosa Land is set to turnover more houses in the months to come, meticulously working on ev-
ery house to make it more of a home. “We make sure that every detail is impeccable for that optimal homeowner satisfaction,” Lagdameo further said. The ongoing construction of other amenities like the basketball court and the kid’s playground makes it even more exciting for homeowners to start moving in to Damosa Fairlane as these amenities are scheduled to be in-
augurated around the last quarter of this year. Now, enjoying life’s simple but greatest pleasure is even made easier in a community that recognizes its worth. ture. “Biological innovation provides opportunities for wealth creation and helps solve social problems,” Dr. Gisela P. Concepcion of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman told the 36th annual Scientific Meeting of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). However, “the level of biological innovation remains low,” said Concepcion of the UP Marine Science Institute (MSI). “This is because of the limited number of expert and skilled manpower and the facilities that can drive biotechnology and biological innovation to a high level.” She was referring to the development and production of new, high-value products using biotechnology, bioengineering, bioinformatics and bioprocessing. The raw materials are biological – microorganisms, plants, animals and humans – and the information science has gathered on these materials. “The entrepreneurial skills of scientists to bring discovery or invention to commercialization are lacking,” said Concepcion, a member of NAST, the country's highest policy advi-
sory body on science and technology. “And the value chains or networks linking the market with investors and inventors is absent.” “The risk-aversion for biotechnology of investors reflects the low science literacy of the general public and a limited understanding of the benefits of high level science and technology to society,” said Concepcion who is also the Vice President for Academic Affairs of UP where she teaches graduate courses and undertakes research on natural marine products and pharmaceuticals. And yet, she said, the opportunities are abundant. Concepcion herself
heads the TerraPharma and PharmaSeas Drug Discovery program funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to develop medicines from mollusks and other marine life. She pointed to the successful adaptation by Filipino farmers of biotechnology corn that is resistant to a major pest, the corn borer. The Bt corn technology, the first in asia, has boosted the harvest and income of Filipino corn farmers; they also use less pesticides now because of Bt corn. She cited successful and ongoing bio-innovation projects such as that of dr. Gonzalo Serafica of Xylos Corporation who
IOTECH crops not only bring food on the table. They put money in farmers' pockets too. The farm level economic benefit of planting biotech corn in the Philippines reached $264.5 million from 2003 to 2011, according to the International Service for the Acquisiton of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA); it estimates that for 2011 alone, the net national impact of biotech corn on farm income was $93.6 million. ISAAA cites several sources enumerating the economic benefits of planting biotech corn. The gain in profit at the farmer level is P10,132 per hectare for farmers planting biotech corn with a corresponding savings of P168 per hectare in insecticide costs, according to a 2006 study by Dr. Jose Yorobe and Dr. Cesar Quicoy of the College of Econom-
ics and Management, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). The additional farm income from biotech corn was P7,482 per hectare during the dry season and P7,080 per hectare during the wet season of the 20032004 crop year, according to a socioeconomic impact study conducted in 2005 by SIKAP/STRIVE Foundation, an organization in Los Baños that conducts studies on issues affecting agricultural policy. Using data from the 2004-2005 crop year, SIKAP/STRIVE estimated in 2007 that biotech corn could provide an overall income advantage that ranged from 5 to 14 percent during the wet season and 20 to 48 percent during the dry season. In a 2009 study covering crop year 2007-2008, SIKAP/STRIVE determined that biotech corn increased average net profitability in nine provinces by
4 to 7 percent during the wet season and 3 to 9 percent during the dry season. The ISAAA report observes that the projected benefits from other biotech crops nearing commercialization, such as the Golden Rice, could be higher than corn. Golden Rice could earn $88 million per year, as Dr. R. Zimmermann and M. Qaim of the International Rice Research Institute estimated in a 2004 study. The benefits from Golden Rice are derived from gains due to reduced mortality and reduced disability caused by Vitamin A deficiency. [SciPhil] The benefits from biotech eggplant are projected at almost P9 million, according to Dr. Sergio Francisco who was the Chief Science Research Specialist at the Philippine Rice Research Institute when he made a study on biotech eggplant in 2007. HE century-old pygmy forest of Mt. Hamiguitan is the latest addition to the World Heritage sites. Located within the towns of Mati, San Isidro and Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental, Mt. Hamiguitan is the first in Mindanao and the first mountain range in the Philippines to be listed as a World Heritage Site. The 6,834-hectare sanctuary Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary is a mountain ridge, with elevations from 75 meters to 1,637 meters above sea level, along the Pujada Peninsula in the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor. A protected area since 2004, the mountain was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 2004. It is home to the iconic Philippine Monkey-Eating Eagle, the country’s nation-
al bird and the world’s second-largest eagle. Another inhabitant is the Philippine Cockatoo; both birds are on the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The mountain harbors critically endangered trees, threatened plants and animals, eight species of which are found only in the mountain. The Shorea polysperma plant, the Shorea astylosa tree and the Paphiopedilum adductum orchid found on its slopes are also on the Red List. The range nurtures 1,380 species of plants and 341 species of animals that are endemic to the Philippines. Philippine Warty Pig, tarsier, brown deer and the Philippine mossy-pygmy fruit bat. And it is famous for its 225-hectare pygmy forest consisting of 100-year-old bonsai trees. After six years of documentation and evaluation, UNESCO (United Nations educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in June declared the sanctuary a World Heritage Site (read: Protect and Conserve, Don't Touch,). “The site represents the fast disappearing habitats of globally important species of plants and animals,” according to a Philippine paper submitted to UNESCO. “At the national level, this sanctuary is a conservation interest. War vs corruption must go on
HATEVER happens, the drive against corruption in the country should continue. And the guy who has the credibility to wage the campaign is still President Aquino. The war against thieves in government and their collaborators in the private sector has taken off and has impressed the community of nations. For one, the country has gained several favorable credit upgrades never enjoyed by the Philippines before. The latest good word is from no less than visiting World Bank president Jim Yong Kim, who declared that the Philippines would be the next Asian “miracle.” Kim who was in Manila for two days last week announced that the World Bank would provide $119 million for the construction of new roads, bridges, and irrigation systems in Muslim Mindanao “in support of efforts to promote peace and economic development in the region,” according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The action of the Supreme Court declaring the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) unconstitutional days ago is a debacle all right, but it should not be enough to dampen the enthusiasm of Mr. Aquino to introduce reforms in our jaded nation. He should take pity on our fellow countrymen who will suffer once the reforms are abandoned and the country will be back to zero. It is important that the reforms must be spearheaded by one who has never been tainted with the stigma of corruption like most of our leaders now. The President should never be discouraged by criticisms of those whose business and preoccupation is to criticize and heckle a sitting President. He should understand that in a democracy, it is the role of his detractors to find fault and criticize him. What is important to Filipinos now is that they be assured that they have a leader who is made of sterner stuff always willing to continue fighting until victory is achieved. ANTONIO M. A curse on Aquino’s house
HE timing says it all. On the same day that President Aquino delivered a tongue lashing directed at the Supreme Court for striking down the Disbursement Acceleration Fund as unconstitutional, Iloilo Rep. Niel Tupas Jr., an administration ally, filed a bill seeking to reform or abolish the high tribunal’s Judiciary Development Fund. In light of how the controversial DAP has drawn flak, Tupas’ bill can only be interpreted as a vindictive measure. He is out not to advocate reform through legislation. He is the designated political triggerman tasked to fire the opening salvo in a war that Malacanang is cooking up against a co-equal branch of government. It’s not that the JDF should not be scrutinized or placed under tighter rules. It’s the fact that Tupas realized such need only after the Supreme Court ruled against the DAP and earlier, against the Priority Development Assistance Fund, the lawmakers’ biggest capital for political longevity. Vengeance is clearly the genuine motivation
S
OFTWARE PIRACY – After too much fuss about the ongoing political rigmarole, let’s divert our attention to other pressing concern. The upsetting development is the performance of the country’s law enforcement agencies to combat software piracy a.k.a. theft of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Lack of cooperation and coordination among concerned agencies and law enforcement units, and lack of enabling laws that would stamp out software piracy are results of an inefficient and ineffective government. Software piracy has proven to be a king-size headache for law authorities. In purely economic terms, this mode of illicit business is a nightmare for the software manufacturing sector and legitimate distributors. But despite the burdening situation, confidence remains high that the global software producers could duck piracy plaguing not only the Philippines but also other parts of the world. Piracy rate in the country, for example, is rising at accelerating pace registering more than 70% in 2013 valued at around P15 billion or up from 68% in 2012. Some manufacturers remained confident to withstand the threat. They are worried because the major part of the problem is the users’ increasing interest in patronizing pirated software products. The negative indications are disheartening owing largely in part to cheaper and availability of pirated software items. Although the showcase export of software producing countries had
behind the bill, which was filed apparently upon the prodding of Malacanang. “This is a system at work, of constitutional processes at work. It’s a system of checks and balances. In line with the Supreme Court’s decision that some discretionary funds are unconstitutional, we have to look at the JDF,” Tupas claimed. Even at its face value, Tupas’ statement was all hot air. In both form and substance, the bill appears to be a well-intentioned effort to make the system of checks and balances work. Except that it’s being used to blackmail the judiciary to acquiesce to the combined will of the executive and legislative. In this instance where two branches connive against the third branch the principle of co-equality ceas-
es to exist, as it can only thrive in an atmosphere of mutual respect. In this instance where two branches combine their might – and wrath – against the third branch there could not be a genuine system of checks and balances. Aquino dangled more pork to the House so it would impeach former Chief Justice Renato Corona after the Supreme Court ruled that Hacienda Luisita, for a long time the economic and political backbone of the Cojuangcos of Tarlac, should be distributed to its tenants. Aquino’s allies concealed the true motive of the impeachment by exploiting Corona’s inability to adequately explain the sources of his multi-million cash deposits and properties. The nascent dictator has declared another war with the Supreme Court. Arrogance has blinded him to the reality that the political odds have changed since 2010. Disillusionment is growing by the day. redefined competitiveness, unscrupulous local software manufacturers and distributors were clearly getting a big slice of the market. Low prices and high customers’ satisfaction on pirated software items had spurred a never-ending cycle of increased demand and high sales growth. That is precisely the reason why according to a report by joint operatives of the NBI, PNP, OMB and IPO, about 60% of computer and electronic gadget users admit they have acquired pirated software and use them most of the time. The economic reality is vastly more complicated, but in many ways business is brisk. Even the upbeat tax officials would admit that no taxes have been collected from the unlawful but highly profitable software piracy business. The source of software manufacturers’ woes and the global economy will not rebound until the clandestine operations of unscrupulous entrepreneurs are stopped. The toughest problem relates to the very nature of the software manufacturing base. Prices of personal computers, peripherals, semi-conductors and different electronic components are mired in a global slump due to the unabated software piracy.
It’s a double-whammy for the industry. There’s no doubt that the approach to solving the problem needs to be changed. Industry sources insist that the real solution to widespread software piracy problem is not only pressing the “red light” or other scaring moves, but a massive information campaign, concerted public education and forceful law enforcement. These precautionary measures would be enough to make unscrupulous entrepreneurs turn tail. Authorities can actually minimize if not totally eradicate the deceitful undertaking, but until they adopt a “mailedfist” policy the software piracy problem are going to keep on returning. It is also widely believed that a no nonsense campaign that spares no one in the process would be an uncomfortable squeeze for the violators. Sooner or later, the lure of profit will toughen the nerves of the unscrupulous traders engaged in unauthorized reproduction and illegal distribution of software items. If there is brisk business and if there are many customers and deals to be done, they will come and continue the software piracy business that is proving to be “hugely lucrative.” Meanwhile at this stage, authorities are just treating the symptoms too leniently and seemed satisfied dealing the problem with “kid glove” method. All of which proves the wary public’s point: for the stouthearted, this is a great way to make money from illicit undertaking because authorities are looking at the opposite direction – for obvious reasons.

O one likes to admit committing an unseemly act, let alone an unpatriotic one, and not especially habitual liars like traditional politicos or trapos. Catch anyone red-handed, and he would rather lie and cheat and point a finger at others rather than admit to a crime. Ask Bong or Jinggoy and see if this isn’t so. It’s only human to avoid shame or disgrace; but to deny it if it’s the truth is cowardly and unbecoming. That’s why it’s difficult to indict high officials like senators. They’re egotistic, so full of themselves, think themselves above the law, and actually believe they can do no wrong. But deep down they know that to be uncovered as a hypocrite can be intolerably shameful, devastating to one’s ego, difficult to live with. They know it, so there’s no need to tiptoe around them if there’s probable cause, no reason to be lenient, especially if they keep up the pretense and strike a defiant pose. When caught in the act or exposed, such politicos would rather lie to their teeth, dissemble, appeal to emotion, or point fingers at others. This is all the more reason not to be lenient, not to show mercy, so they’ll learn to respect the law. Dura lex, sed lex! Charges must be filed, indictments swift, to teach them a lesson. ***** We should toughen up on criminals who dare to presume they’re above the law, who act like the high and mighty, but plead for exceptional treatment. Such people need to be cut down to size, to never forget they are just public servants— stewards of society. Because of them, the anxiety level in our society is rising perilously high, fearing them and their depredations to be unstoppable. To stop the plunder, stern measures are imperative. Urgent warnings must be dealt to those who may think of further transgression against our heritage and irreplaceable benefits. In the minds and hearts of everyone must be embedded a scrupulous conscience about the need to abhor such activities and attitudes even as efforts must be made to remove occasions that tempt the faint of heart. We must cultivate an assertive brand of sovereignty matched by a fierce sense of patriotism and protectiveness for our birthright, and hope that the same sense will tug at the conscience of those who rise to positions of responsibility to assume the stewardship of our common possessions and birthright. As a corollary, we should strive to develop in our citizens a compelling sense of discrimination and selectiveness about the few who aspire to high responsibility, even as we strive to weed out the unworthy and others with misplaced ambitions. Henceforth, campaigning, supporting, financing, or electing dubious candidates ought to be viewed through the prism of their effects on the community and society at large. Our political values should be geared towards responsible citizenship and fastidious stewardship by the chosen few. ***** “Ambition should be made of sterner stuff!”—said Marc Antony. Does anyone or any group bother to look into the stuff of which their political idols are made? Of what stuff are Tanda, Pogi, and Sexy made that merited them the highest honor a sovereign citizen can confer upon another citizen? Such honor ought to be given only with very deep circumspection and thorough consideration. How about the rest in Congress? What sort of stuff are they made of? And what are the do-nothings and say-nothings still doing in those hallowed halls? Kahit may pambili man, kelangan pa rin namin magrequest sa Manila,” she said. She said that the national government nor the local government have no particular program for PWHs. Families cannot have discounts becasue it is not yet covered by Philhealth. “Hindi masyadong pinapriority ng gobyerno ang PWHs dahil siguro rare ang hemophilia” she said, but it is not enough to be an excuse because other countries like Austrialia have
programs for PWHs. Maureen Spilsburg, advance social worker from Queensland Hemophilia Center, said that PWHs in australia get financial and medical support from the government. Medicines are even delivered to homes of patients. The disease is known to be inherited blood disorder that runs in the veins of the royal family in Europe but not here. Ong said that only 160 PWHs are registered in the records of MHC. Most of her patients are ages 8 to 10 years old. However, she said that the disease can be diagnosed among newborns or less than one year old. Ong said that among her patients, only 25 percent with a monthly income of more than P 30,000 have the capacity to avail the Fac-
tor 8, while the 70 percent of the families of the registered PWHs earn P5,000 to P10,000 monthly and another 5 percent earn less than P5,000. “Sana nga yung mga nakakaafford na nga lang ang tinatamaan ng sakit na to pero sa totoo lang karamihan ng naadmit sa SPMC ay yung mga pasyente na wala man lang pambayad ng dugo o pampaadmit man lang,” the doctor said during the Kapehan sa PIA last Friday. She said that each vial of Factor 8, a treatment for hemophilia cost P5,000. Most families cannot afford the it because each treatment will vary based on the age and weight of the patient. A 10 kilogram patient will need five vials of Factor 8 which is not even available in the city.
“Hemophilia is a lifelong disease. May mga kakilala ako na mayaman at may pambayad pero pag-abot ng bata ng 10 years old nahihirapan na sila kasi pamhabangbuhay na sakit ito. Hindi ito katulad ng cancer na pag nagchemotheraphy pwedeng matapos na,” she said. She said that she has a patient who wished to die because of the pain. “No amount of pain reliever can relieve the pain this young patients feel,” she said. “Kung may magagawa lang sana ako pero wala dahil wala naman akong maibigay na gamot”. Ong said that the organization plans to tap the city government for assistance this year.CRC

Hundreds of guests were present during the 3-day duration that was packed with activities and contests such as BB @ BB, BB Grill Off, Graffiti Art Contest, Pundokan Essay Writing & Photography Contest. Arts & Crafts workshops were also held as well as a bazaar showcasing some of Davao’s local businesses. This Kadayawan, Pundokan Dabaw would like to focus on Dabaw’s music scene. and notification sounds, and a clean layout to present information clearly. ASUS ZenUI also includes two features — What’s Next and Do It Later — designed to free users from actively having to manage the multitude of information they are confronted with daily, and enable them to be more productive. What’s Next puts the information currently most important and useful to the user — such as upcoming appointments, new messages and missed calls from VIP contacts, weather at the next destination, and more — front and center on the lock screen, the home screen and in the notification drawer. PixelMaster — professional-looking photos, every time every Zenfone features PixelMaster, an exclusive ASUS camera technology comprising a set of features including Selfie Mode and Depth of Field Mode that improve camera performance and make it easier for users to capture great photos and videos. Two additional PixelMaster features, Low-light Mode and Time Rewind, are also available on Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 6. Low-light Mode significantly increases camera performance in poorly lit scenes. By merging adjacent pixels, the camera increases light sensitivity by up to 400% and contrast up to 200%, resulting in clear and bright low-light shots without the need for
a flash. electronic Image Stabilizer (eIS) improves low-light performance even further resulting in sharper, non-blurry photos. Low-light mode is also available when shooting video.
Action photography can be challenging due to subject motion, but Time Rewind makes capturing that perfect moment easier. By automatically taking multiple pictures before and after the user presses the shutter button, the chance of getting a great photo of a difficult subject is increased. After taking the photo, the user can “go back in time” using an easy-to-use interface to select the best shot, or can simply choose to save all of the available shots captured by the camera. Selfie Mode is a new and innovative way to take highquality self-portraits (‘selfies’). It enables the user to use the high resolution main camera on the back of the phone — instead of the lower resolution front-facing camera — to take and individual selfie or one with a group of friends. The camera automatically detects when the selected number of people is in the frame and begins a countdown before taking three photos. Afterwards, the user can select the bestlooking photo to save and share online. Depth of Field Mode lets the user capture engaging photographs with sharp, isolated subjects set against rich, softly blurred backgrounds — a look known to photographers as shallow depth of field — that is usually only possible with dedicated, high-end cameras.

GMA Network introduces new child actors of “Yagit” after nationwide search
AFTER a series of nationwide auditions, GMA Network introduces this generation’s newest child wonders who will breathe life to the four lead characters in the remake of the hit drama series, yagit. These child wonders will definitely capture the hearts and touch the lives of the Kapuso viewers with their innate acting skills and their ability to connect with the people through their heartful acting performances. Acclaimed director Gina Alajar expressed her delight on finally finding the four kids who will star in yagit following the tedious screenings. “Masaya ako at contented dahil noong nag-uumpisa pa lang ang auditions, sinabi ko na yung criteria ko, yung hinahanap ko. And I think nakita na namin ngayon. Walang itulakkabigin sa kanila, lahat sila gusto mong yakapin,” she said. Portraying the role of Elisa is Chlaui Malayao, a six-year-old sweet girl who can instantly catch the attention and win the affection of everyone with her angelic face. Her fragile personality even fits the role of Elisa who cannot take to be away from her mother, Dolores Macabuhay, to be played by Kapuso actress yasmien Kurdi. Their charming faces make their mother and daughter tandem in the small screen more realistic. “She has that innocence na tanggap niya kung sino at ano ang nanay niya sa story. Si yasmien kasi is a
JM Andres, the eight-yearold boy who is set to portray the role of Ding Reyes. “Noong pinapanood namin siya sa VTR nung auditions, we were able to create a sense of sympathy with his character. Kasi yung role niya silang dalawa lang ng nanay niya yung nakatira sa bahay. Nung nakita na-
very pretty girl, magandang panoorin na maganda yung nanay at maganda rin yung anak,” Alajar noted.

Judie, who has a mature personality at her young age, certainly fits the role of being the ‘ate’ of the group who is full of dreams. “Naghanap kasi kami ng batang maganda ang mga mata para makita mo sa kanya yung mga pangarap na gusto niya. So nung nakita namin siya, her eyes are very expressive pero alam mong merong sadness. Kaya bagay na bagay sa kanya ang maging Josie,” Alajar said. Meanwhile, Jemwell, who will give life to Tomtom’s chubby character, stood out from the crowd during the auditions not just because of his humorous personality, but also because of his comedic timing. He knows the perfect time to deliver his witty lines, making him perfect for the role. Alajar also has nothing but nice words to say about

ARTS AND CULTURE
A place...FFROM A1 they have and creating viable livelihoods from them. Got heart relishes its role as the ultimate supporting cast to its leads – the communities whom they tap to uplift and grow with. It is really about linking dependencies and involving a wider public in fostering a sense of oneness and building worth. The Got heart Community Shop in Davao came to be when Melissa touched base with local likeminded partners who all set out to create a venue for the appreciation of the Southern region of the country. Together with Gaisano Mall of Davao and the Peace & equity Foundation that provided funding and access to community enterprises, each individual local partner is strongly identified with different aspects of the local culture. Kublai Millan is the main featured artist and curator for the shop. Furniture designer Jon Traya was the contractor and is a managing director. Stella estremera, esteemed journalist, also contributes her artworks to the space and acts as director. Their reputations along with their bodies of work all lead their collective in creating value for what Mindanao has
to offer. Melissa shares that whereas their shop in Quezon City is only able to display products due to limited space, the sufficient space of their Davao shop allows them to showcase more artwork and furniture. The themes of the works currently on display couldn’t be more emblematic of what their collective hopes are in “promoting culture, environmental sustainability and social entrepreneurship” as Melissa likes to put it. There is a wall lined top to bottom with Kublai’s Dalisaya series, which are beautiful renditions of floral forms speaking of his current state of profound happiness and optimism. The wooden furniture around the shop by Traya solidly testify to his assertion that progress can be made in design through harnessing the ideas which nature lead us to. The cement figures depicting movement that look to be rejoicing in those who take notice as they walk by the shop are also by Kublai, pointing to a very basic way of expressing feeling. These along with the works of a host of other noted local artists provide a beautiful foil for the rest of the organic and indigenous products sourced from places such as locales
in South Cotabato and Compostela Valley. The Got heart Foundation has found itself a rich abode in the South. It has created a meaningful beginning and is looking to build lasting ‘heartlinks,’ a term it has coined that means that it wants to bring out the best in those who have the least. Melissa shares that all the communities that she has talked to are always eager to share, learn and grow further.
There is enough love to go around and now they have a place that’s truly Got heart. Visit Got Heart Community Shop is located at Unit 7 5th Floor, The Peak Gaisano Mall of Davao, J.P. Laurel Avenue, Davao City. Discover more about the Got Heart Foundation through http://www. gotheart foundation. org or contacting 091758 HEART (0917-5843278).

dapudong loses title in S. Africa By MannY pInOL vsa@edgedavao.net
E
AST LONDON, SOUTH AFRICA - Filipino Edrin “The Sting” Dapudong, the WBO Flyweight Champion, fought like a challenger and chased South African Lwandile Sityatha from pillar to post in all of 12 rounds but ended up losing his boxing title by split decision Friday night (early Saturday morning in Manila) at the international convention center here. With the thought that he would lose his title by decision if the fight goes 12 rounds, Dapudong started hot in the first round and initiated the action catching the challenger with wicked hooks and powerful body punches. Sityatha, who apparently was aware of the power of Dapudong, backpedalled throughout the fight but was also able to catch the champion with jabs and punches to the midsection. In the 12th and final round, Sityatha literally circled the ring to avoid Dapudong perhaps aware
that by just finishing the round he was assured of victory. In the end when the judges scorecards were turned in, Dapudong lost by split decision, a verdict which was expected by the Filipino camp. Surprisingly though it was the South African judge, Andile Mantika, initially thought to be sympathetic to his countryman, who scored the fight in favor of the Filipino Champion 115-113. The two neutral judges on the other hand, Waleska Roldan of Puerto Rico and last minute pick Eddie Pappoe of Ghana scored the fight in favor of the challenger with identical lopsided scores of 116 for Sityatha and 112 for Dapudong. “We have nothing to be ashamed of even if we lost by split decision” said trainer Nonoy Neri who was in the corner with with Rex Penalosa and South African cutman Gert Strydom.
kobe Bryant supports the Lakers' offseason moves, which is nice of him
T
HE Los Angeles Lakers have not had the most impressive offseason in the NBA. After striking out with the summer's big names, general manager Mitch Kupchak settled for deals with players like Houston Rockets castoff Jeremy Lin and 25-year-old journeyman power forward Ed Davis. Meanwhile, the Lakers have brought back incumbents Nick Young and Jordan Hill on what seemed like above-market deals. Even the promising moves, like adding rookie power forward Julius Randle in the draft, seem questionable now that the team has a glut of players at several positions. It's bad enough that Thursday's news that the Lakers had claimed Chicago Bulls amnesty case Carlos Boozer was met largely with laughs and derision. In short, this squad looks likely to miss out on the postseason even if Kobe Bryant returns in full health, which is iffy in itself. When Kobe signed his massive two-year extension with the Lakers last November, he did so with the expectation that the team would compete in some form. So the franchise icon must be really mad now, right? Not so much. In an appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour to plug his upcoming Showtime documentary "Kobe Bryant's Muse," the 16-time All-Star said he's in favor of Kupchak's moves. From ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne on Twitter:
It's easy to make fun of Kobe's comments. For one thing, the phrase "I can sit here and tell you with 100 percent honesty" sounds like cover for an opinion that makes little sense, almost like when someone says "with all due respect" before launching an offensive tirade. It also doesn't help that Kobe uses the word "efficiently" in reference to the acquisitions of high-volume shooters like Boozer and Young. Putting on a happy face doesn't change the Lakers' dim prospects for the 2014-15 season. Of course, the optimistic route is an easier path than complaining, because Kobe must take some of the blame for the Lakers' inability to convince prized free agents they're an ideal destination. When Kobe signed his new deal, which now takes up roughly 40 percent of next season's salary cap, it became clear that the Lakers would struggle to add enough players to the roster to win titles. Those chances became worse once his injury issues persisted last season, and heading into July's free agency period there was very little evidence that the Lakers were on the brink of serious success. He made contention very difficult for himself and the team when he agreed to that deal. That was his prerogative, and it's hard to argue with making close to $50 million over two years. But that choice did come with some repercussions.

hard. I hope he can respect me and we can collaborate well together,” Lin told a press conference in fluent Mandarin. Lin was the first Chinese-American to play in the NBA, with a grandmother living in China and parents from Taiwan. He signed a three-year deal with Houston for $25 million in 2012 but the 25-year-old said he had not expected that he would be sitting on the bench in the second year. “I am very excited to join the Lakers. I think this is a very good opportunity.
I hope I can make a bigger contribution ... I hope I can play a more important role,” Lin said. He has become a sporting hero in Taiwan after his star turn in New York and more than 200 fans gathered at the airport outside Taipei for his arrival despite the late hour. Lin averaged 12.5 points, 4.1 assists and 2.6 rebounds a game for the Rockets last season. In 217 games over four NBA campaigns, Lin has averaged 11.9 points, 4.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds a game. The Asian-American
standout will join a talented Laker backcourt hoping to revive the form he showed in February of 2012 when he came off the bench for an injury-plagued New York squad and sparked a win streak. The Harvard graduate became the first player in NBA history to score at least 20 points and contribute seven assists in his first five starts, twice making the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine while being named among Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People with his ragsto-riches tale.
Lin thrilled to train with kobe J
EREMY Lin said Friday he hopes to earn the respect of his new Los Angeles Lakers teammates and was relishing the chance to play alongside team star Kobe Bryant. Lin, the point guard whose 2012 heroics for the New York Knicks sparked a brief “Linsanity” phenomenon, arrived in Taipei late Thursday for a promotional tour, just days after he was traded by the Houston Rockets to the Lakers. “Kobe wants to win and I want to win. Team Rody biker wins in T’nalak MTB E
RIC Dhave Apinar of the Mayor Rody Duterte Cycling Team topped the Junior category of the 2014 T’nalak Festival Mountain Bike Race in Lake Sebu, Koronadal City recently. Apinar, 20, topped the 23-kilometer race for bikers aged 29 years old below. Peter Gregorio of Tupi, South Cotabato, finished second. Apinar, who earlier placed second behind pro biker Junrey Navara of Tupi in the Araw ng Hagonoy, took the race as his final workout ahead of the Philcycling Track Cycling Trial
slated on July 29-30 at the Amoranto Velodrome in Quezon City. Philcycling deputy secretary general Salvador Paholio Jr. said that Apinar’s trip is backed up by the Davao Livestrong Builders Corporation. “It is Davao Livestrong’s corporate social responsibility to help our young and promising athletes,” said Paholio, also chairman and CEO of the Davao Livestrong Builders Corp. Apinar, who also finished 8th in the 65-km road bike race dominated by pro bikers, will leave for Manila on July 26.

ANNY Ildefonso will get a new lease on his professional basketball career as he was the first selection in the 2014 PBA Expansion Draft by Blackwater Sports. The former two-time PBA Most Valuable Player said that he will retire if he’s not selected but now he’s given a huge responsibility in helping out a young team. The management said that the selection was based on his ability to lead and forge their younger players into better professionals. Ildefonso will also be the extension of the coaching staff on the floor. The PBA gave the two teams an option to submit their wish list of players. However, the two teams decided to do a regular draft. “We went the usual route which was though picks, alternating priority picks,” said PBA Commissioner Chito Salud. “The coin flip went in favor of Blackwater Sports and their selection was Danny Ildefonso. Ildefonso will be joined by promising rookie Alex Nuyles, JR Cawaling, Eddie Laure, Bryan Faundo, JP Erram, Paul Artadi, Gilbert Bulawan, Bambam Gamalinda, Chris Timberlake, Norman
Gonzales, and Rob Celiz. Team KIA on the other hand will be bannered by Reil Cervantes, Mike Burtscher, Hans Thiele, Alvin Padilla, Jai Reyes, Paul Sanga, Angelus Raymundo, Eder Saldua, Nic Belasco, LA Revilla, Joshua Webb, and Richard Alanzo After the press conference, KIA team manager Eric Pineda officially announced that Manny Pacquiao would be joining the 2014 PBA Rookie Draft. “We welcome the involvement of Congressman Manny Pacquiao with Team KIA as a coach and we welcome his draft application,” Salud said. “As he previously committed, he will go through the normal, regular procedure.” With his role as Team KIA’s head coach, it is now unclear what will happen if Pacquiao is selected by another team in the 2014 PBA Draft. Although he was absent in the proceedings to be by his sick wife’s side in General Santos City, Pacquiao was still a big part of the selection process as assistant coach Glen Capacio said that they were in constant communication.

Spoelstra hangs out with cone O
KAY, first, a caveat. There is currently no official confirmation that the gentleman in the photo is in fact San Mig Coffee Mixers head coach Tim Cone. We do know, based on his Twitter account that he is in Las Vegas, having scouted former Mixers import Denzel Bowles and FilAm guard Jordan Clarkson, so it is probably him.
Just needed to get that out of the way. Now, with that said, how cool is it for Cone to be hanging out with Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, while at the Las Vegas Summer League? How scary would it be if Cone imparts a few bits of the triangle to Spoelstra, or if Spoelstra give Cone a couple of tips about his
pace-and-space style of offense? Maybe there’s someone on the Heat summer league squad Cone is filing away in his head for when the import conferences roll around? Perhaps Spo is picking Cone’s head about a new, LeBron James-less action plan for the upcoming NBA season? What if Spo is giving Cone a few tips to pass
after boxing is what’s important. I could hit this guy without gloves and he could never walk again. We use gloves to protect ourselves.” In their first meeting 10 weeks ago, Mayweather won a 12-round majority decision from the three judges, including one who scored it a 114-114 draw. American Mayweather (46-0, 26 KOs) was criticized for not doing enough in the early going as Maidana swarmed him and won several rounds. Mayweather and Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) met with reporters Thursday at a news conference at the downtown Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel as part of a cross-country promotion tour. Unlike his May fight, this time there was no talk of retirement which Mayweather used to hype the first one. During the post-fight news conference in May, Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia got Mayweather to agree to a rematch and a handshake on the podium to seal the deal. Mayweather said
Thursday he didn’t give Maidana this rematch because he wanted to honour that commitment. He went for it because he sees the first half of that fight as a blight on his career that he wants to wash away with a dominating victory. “This guy won three or four rounds against me and that never happens,” he said. - ‘Use his elbows’ Maidana said Thursday he wants the referee to penalize Mayweather for using his elbows. “He is a bit of a dirty fighter. He likes to use his elbows, get them in your throat and for some reason the referees let him get away with it,” Maidana said. Mayweather also defended his counterpunching style Thursday, saying it has enabled him to outlast many of the fighters that turned pro at the same time as him back in 1996. “I am almost 20 years in and I am still sharp and still going strong,” he said. “I think all those other

In summary, we have no idea what they were talking about (what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas), but overall, the fact that they’re together at all is in itself, pretty cool.
Floyd wants doubts erased in rematch

OXING champ Floyd Mayweather says Marcos Maidana should be grateful for the rematch and there is no chance he will allow the challenger to choose the gloves for their September fight. “He wanted a rematch and I gave it to him,” Mayweather said Thursday. “Don’t complain about the gloves. He says he won the first fight so do it again with the same gloves.” Undefeated Mayweather will face Argentina’s Maidana on September 13 at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas with Mayweather’s 147-pound World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council titles on the line. A disagreement arose on the eve of their first fight on May 3 when Mayweather objected to the 227 gram (eight ounce) gloves that Maidana wanted to use, saying they didn’t have enough padding. “This is not a street fight; this is not an MMA fight,” Mayweather said. “My health and my career
fighters should have been more defensive fighters.” The September fight will be Mayweather’s fourth of a six-fight contract with New York-based Showtime Networks Inc. If he wins all three of his remaining fights it would leave him with 49 wins, one shy of going 50-0. “If the price is right and I want to go for number 50 then it is possible,” he said. “One of my ultimate goals is to fight in New York.” Mayweather said that like all the great athletes he has doubts before a big fight. “I wake up at 3 am and run eight miles. There are voices going through my head telling me ‘He can beat you and you don’t deserve to be there,’” he said. “But then there is another voice in my head where my mother’s telling me, ‘You are special. You are where you’re at for a reason.’ Those are the things no one understands. So I want to continue to push myself to the limit.”

ABC in Game 4, Go fires 45

UST when it looked like the City Hall Executives are about to see its sweep ambitions banish in thin air, Glen Escandor had other things in mind. The city sports consultant nailed a hailmary shot at the buzzer to turn an otherwise losing stand into a dramatic highwire finish completed by the Execs’ top gun Bong Go in the extra period. Escandor’s late-game heroics coupled with Go’s finishing touches were the masterstroke that produced the sweep for the Execs in the friendly Bestof-Seven series against a hard-fighting Association of Barangay Captains (ABC), 109 – 100, in Game 4 at the Davao City Recreation Center Almendras Gym on Thursday night. With the Village Chiefs holding on to a 83-81 lead with three seconds left in regulation, Rhodelio Poliquit flicked a pass to an open Escandor who pulled up a 16-feet jumper as time run out—the ball swished through the cords—a whiff of fresh air
for the Execs and a dagger on the heart of the Villagers. Go took over in the extra period hitting threes with abandon to put the needed cushion while Escandor laced the icing on the cake with a corner triple in the closing seconds to seal the win and the series. Game 4 was the closest the Villagers could get in the series. Escandor finished the game with 15 points ina solid back-up job to the hot-shooting Go who banged in his usual numbers with 45 points. ABC made the first basket in the overtime but the Execs answered back with a big run on the 10 straight points of Go highlighted with back to back triples. The Village Chiefs converted four consecutive points to keep the game close, however but that proved to be their last stand as the Execs came through with clutch plays to douse cold water on the rallying ABC.
