AVAO City’s Chinatown Development Council in partnership with Davao City Tourism Office hosted the annual countdown to welcome the Chinese New Year at People’s Park Davao City on Thursday night gathering a crowd of both Chinese and non-Chinese Davaoeños. The event featured Chinese ceremony to shed off bad luck including the traditional Lion and Dragon Dances, as well as activities for everyone to enjoy. Despite the unpleasant weather, Davaoeños came out in droves to celebrate the
event as the rest of the night was filled with performances from various sectors and institutions in the city. Students of Davao Chong Hua High School, the first Chinese school established in the city performed popular and traditional Chinese song and dances. Meanwhile, Davao City comedians hosted games such as Hopia-eating contest and longest breath in New Year greeting. A hip-hop competition was also held. Susan Isabel Reta of Davao City Chinatown Development Council said this year’s celebration is different because it was held at the
People’s Park for the first time. “Of course what makes it different this year is we’re celebrating the Year of the Fire Rooster and because we have it here at People’s Park because there is a rally going on at Rizal Park,” she explained. Reta also expressed her optimism with the good relationship of the Filipino-Chinese community in the City. She also bared DCCDC’s project in partnership with the city government which is the establishment of signboards bearing the names of key areas in Chinatown for identification of the location.
Meanwhile, City Tourism Officer Gene Rose Tecson said the program is an effort to show every Davaoeños the good relationship among Chinese members of the community and to their Filipino counterparts. “We have a number of tribes and nationalities in Davao City but we are all working together,” said Tecson as she emphasized that the program is one way to show the unity among diverse cultures within the city. In Chinese Lunar Calendar, Year of the Rooster begins on January 28, 2017 and lasts until 15th February 2018.

OLICE authorities have appealed to Mayor Rasul Sangki of Ampatuan, Maguindanao to surrender peacefully because there are search warrants against him for possession of high-powered firearms and suspected illegal drugs. The appeal was separately issued by Supt. Jimmy Daza, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao , and Sr. Supt. Agustin Tello, Maguindanao police provincial director, after Sangki eluded arrest on Thursday. “It is better for him to peacefully turn himself in so other people would not be affected by any police or military operation against him,” Daza told reporters. Citing intelligence information, Daza said Sangki made
Barangay Saniag, an upland village of the Teduray tribespeople, as his base because he knew that there are search warrants against him. The CIDG regional chief said Sangki allegedly gave villagers and outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters sacks of rice and some money for them to protect him in the village. Sangki, named by President Rodrigo Duterte in August last year as among the narco-politicians in Maguindanao, vehemently denied he was into illegal drugs or a protector of drug lords. Last December, he hosted an anti-drug summit in his town, urging his people to resist drugs and expressed support for President Duterte’s war on drugs.

ARKO ng Republika ng Pilipinas (BRP) Andres Bonifacio (FF17), the Philippine Navy’s newest ship, has arrived in Davao on Saturday and is expected to leave the city this Monday. The ship, a former US Coast Guard high endurance cutter, arrived in early December after being acquired by the government under the Excess Defense Articles and the Foreign Assistance Act. The newly-acquired warship docked at the Sasa Wharf in Barangay Calumpang and was formally welcomed by city officials led by Public Safety and Security Command
Center head MGen Benito de Leon who represented Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. Lt. James Reyes, public affairs officer of the Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao, told Edge Davao that the frigate’s visit is part of its nationwide tour and “shakedown mission” that started in Cebu City last January 13. The official said Navy officials decided to stage a public tour for the frigate “as we need to show that the Navy is the ship and ship is the Navy.” “The tour is also aimed to test the seaworthiness and endurance of the ship, which is mainly capable of staging
maritime interdiction operations or patrols in the high seas,” he said. Being a “cutter” warship, Reyes added it could navigate through rough seas and cut through huge waves. He said the ship, which is manned by 180 officers and crew, is also equipped with an “Oto Melara” gun or cannon, which he described as capable of taking out moving targets at sea. “Being a frigate, it has hangar for helicopters. So it could also cater to the marines and other contingents of the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” he said.
From 1967 to 2016 the ship was a Hamilton-class high endurance cutter of the United States Coast Guard that was named USCGC Boutwell (WHEC-719) and was decommissioned in early 2016. Aside from the open house, Reyes said they will hold an exhibit and recruitment activities on Thursday for Navy active service and reservists at the SM mall. The exhibit will feature gears, weapons and disaster response equipment of the naval special operations group or the “Philippine Navy SEALS.”

According to LFC, it has
requested the Court of Appeals to restrain the Department of Agrarian Reform from implementing its issuance of a questionable cease-and-desist order (CDO). Despite CA’s denial of LFC’s request, LFC stressed that it has not diminished the legal effect of the court order for LFC to continue to manage portions of HEARBCO-1 farms. HE Department of Justice (DOJ) has approved the filing of kidnapping charges against Edgar Matobato, who claimed to be a member of the Davao Death Squad (DDS), for the abduction of suspected terrorist Sali Makdum in Davao del Norte last November 2000 In a resolution dated Dec. 22, 2016 but was released to media on Friday, City Prosecutor Joseph M. Apao of the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte found probable cause for kidnapping against Matobato and Sonny Custodio allegedly committed against Salih Muck Doom. The case stemmed from a complaint of Mirasol Marquez, live-in partner of Makdum, who was abducted on Nov. 9, 2000. No bail was recommended for their temporary liberty. Makdum’s name was mentioned by Matobato at a Senate
hearing where he said that Makdum was taken by authorities and presented to then-Davao police Chief, now Philippine National Police (PNP) head Ronald dela Rosa. Aside from facing kidnapping charges, frustrated murder charges was also approved by DoJ against Matobato, over his failed attempt to kill a Department of Agriculture (DA) adjudicator in Digos City, Davao del Sur last October 2014. The Digos City prosecutor’s office found probable cause on the frustrated murder complaint filed by Abeto Salcedo Jr. against Matobato. Preliminary investigation by prosecutors showed that the incident took place in October 2014 when Salcedo was about to leave his office in Digos City when Matobato shot him. However, he managed to survive the attack. (PNA)

In his Chinese New Year message on Friday, Duterte said that the government shares the “joys and hopes of our Chinese friends and Chinese-Filipinos who have found a root and reason for staying in the country,” adding that the Chinese community had enriched the Filipino culture and history on their own. “May all of us develop a
more profound appreciation of our heritage as two distinct yet intertwined people, and further fortify the goodwill that we have shared over the years,” Duterte said as the Philippines and China has improved its bilateral relations under his administration. He pointed out that the Chinese cuisine and philosophy has become familiar
to the Filipinos and that the trade and investments of the Chinese community have contributed to the Philippine economy. “They [Chinese community] have taken part in the economy by commerce and investments; their cuisine has been dearly familiar in many Filipino homes; their philos-

RESIDENT Rodrigo Roa Duterte has urged both the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) not to provide sanctuary to perceived terrorists to keep the peace in Mindanao. The President made the call in this camp Friday following a closed door meeting with military officials assigned at various parts of the island-region. “We are facing a more dangerous enemy, I am referring to the ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), but I am more worried with (suspicious–looking) Islamic scholars wandering around here (nowadays),” the President said as he addressed men of this camp, which is the headquarters of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID). He assured the 6ID men that he is with them all the way in the fight against the enemies of the state. “We are facing a serious
problem so let us not wait,” he said. President Duterte said he recognizes the fact that the Moro people were the first settlers of Mindanao but urged Muslim brothers to just talk peace and make necessary adjustments. “It is because if we would not covert Mindanao into a federal state, walang katapusan ito (there won’t be an end to this),” he stressed. Mr. Duterte noted that if the economy of Mindanao, wh suffers from being the breadbasket of the country as brought about by threats of terrorism, then the problem should be faced head-on. “I still want peace. HE Philippines and the Indonesia Inter-Agency Task Force for the Operationalization of the Davao/General Santos/Bitung (D/G/B) Roll-on/Roll-off (Roro) Route is now polishing the maiden voyage which will connect Davao and General Santos City to Bitung, Indonesia, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Friday. Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Maria Lumen B. Isleta and members of the D/G/B Roro Route said under the ASEAN Roro Initiative which is already in the pipeline aims to enhance maritime connectivity in ASEAN and to maximize the use of regional sea lanes.
The opening of the route is a more cost and time-efficient alternative to the usual Manila to Jakarta to Bitung route, which would take about three to five weeks of shipping time. In contrast, direct shipping through the D/G/B route will take only one day and a half by ship, excluding the port stay. The route is also expected to spur trade between Mindanao and the Sulawesi provinces in Indonesia and provide greater access for local businessmen to engage in international trade, as well as stimulate other areas of development such as joint tourism promotion, establishment of direct linkages, and increase in investment inflows. HE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will decide soon on whether or not to suspend temporarily the deployment of Filipino household service workers (HSWs) to Kuwait. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said Saturday they are looking into the possibility of stopping momentarily the sending of HSWs to Kuwait due to the abuses suffered by female overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). “We will make a decision on the proposed moratorium soon,” he said, noting the urgent need to end the unfortunate incidents befalling OFWs. “We are taking this call for a moratorium seriously. We will conduct consultations with our partners and other government agencies.” The labor chief is in Kuwait to check on the status of Elpidio Lano, another Filipino worker who is on death row for killing fellow Filipino, Nilo Macaranas, on June 17, 2014. ARMM to remain culturally sensitive on condom distribution in schools
T
HE government of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) will be “culturally sensitive” should the program on the distribution of condoms in schools is implemented in the region, ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman said. The governor made the statement Friday after Department of Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial noted that the program would be implemented nationwide this year, as part of efforts to stop the increasing number of cases of human immunodeficiency virus/ acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) among the youth. The program would be implemented in partnership with the Department of Education (DepED), which has expressed reservation on the plan. The DepED said it recognizes the need to stop the surg-
ing spread of HIV/AIDS among the youth and that discussions with DOH on this matter will soon be conducted. In the ARMM, where most places are conservative and people consider sex-related topics taboo, Hataman underscored that they would undertake measures to deliberate on the plan. He added that Islamic religious leaders such as the Regional Darul ‘Ifta, which is the authority on religious and cultural values of Muslims in the region, would be consulted on the issue. The DOH has explained that the distribution of condoms will be accompanied by guidelines and measures, and will not be distributed indiscriminately to students. In the Philippines, 32,099 cases of HIV/AIDS were reported from 2011 to October 2016. (PNA)

A
GRICULTURE Secretary Manny Piñol welcomed the plan of Governor Anthony del Rosario to expand the farm insurance program of Davao del Norte to all high-value crops affected by the seasonal flooding. The secretary recognized the governor’s aim to indemnify all vulnerable farms with the Philippine Crop Insurance
Corporation (PCIC) to protect farmers against losses due to floods, infestations and diseases. Piñol personally congratulated Governor Del Rosario for the plan during their meeting with other provincial officials of Davao Region in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley on Thursday. Davao del Norte is the first

In the same forum, Piñol also assured the local officials and farmers to approve the proposed agriculture recovery budgets presented by the regions upon validation. The provinces in the
Davao Region requested an initial recovery budget of P39,393,260 to rehabilitate farmlands submerged by massive flooding caused by over a week of intermittent heavy rains. Davao del Norte asked for the biggest rehabilitation fund after incurring initial damages to crops, livestock and fisheries worth P29.8 million. (PNA)

The data were consolidated from the reports submitted by the Municipal DRRMOs, DPWH, and Provincial offices of the Engineering (PEO), Agriculture (PAGRO) and Veteri-
nary (PVO).

A family matter
VERY child brought to this world will grow up discovering his own sexuality and indulge in sexual activity—that’s a given. It used to be that sex is a taboo subject among children. In the past, parents never bring up the topic of sex with their kids. So when parents find a condom inside their son’s wallet or their daughter’s bag, they are scandalized. Times have changed. Condoms are no longer viewed as mere contraceptive but more importantly as protection from the dreaded HIV-AIDS. The government has recently implemented distributing condoms to students as part of the campaign against the proliferation of HIV-AIDS. Consider the figures: According to Department of Health’s statistics, Davao City has 1,793 cases of HIV/AIDS recorded from 1984 to 2016.

Recorded deaths during the period have reached 98. Of the total number of persons with HIV/AIDS in the city, 90 are females and 1,703 are males. As to age demographics, three cases were recorded in persons aged 15; 719 cases in ages 15 to 24; 893 in ages 24 to 34; 200 cases in ages 35 to 49; and 32 cases in ages 50 up. The numbers are definitely alarming. The distribution of condoms is a collaboration among the health and education departments and the local government unit. It requires an accompanying counselling and education so the program just do not appear to be giving out condoms for children and give them the idea that it is alright to do it. That is not enough though. The parents play a very crucial role here. More than having an open mind about sex, parents should treat the subject as a family matter, a responsibility that goes with raising kids. ANTONIO M. AJERO Editor in Chief

Ode to business and businessmen
I
N my 70 summers, the most important lesson I learned is that I should have been in business a lot earlier. Being in business, no matter what the size of your venture, is liberating. In so many ways and from so many shackles. From petty financial worries. From stress that leads of sickness. And yes, from tyrants and assholes in the management totem pole that look down on you when you are in the lower rung of the ladder. This must be the reason why even immensely successful professionals end up putting up their own business enterprises. The satisfaction that one gets from one’s own business is a lot more fulfilling than all the performance and loyalty awards one gets from being just an employee. The smartest guys I met in my life were not the PHDs, but the businessmen who are practical people. They’re quick in springing to action if the situation calls for it, instead of wasting time in trying to arrive at so-called rational decisions. Procrastination is not in the vocabulary of successful businessmen. And yet, they can be the most patient of men. They don’t quit after failing, as they regard failure as opportunity to learn and an inspiration to do better next time. It is said that Col. Harland Sanders, founder of the delicious Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), failed 2,000 times before succeeding. Too bad, I chickened out from a scheduled

In the local scene, I think most of the above are personified by Ferdie Maranon of Sagrex, Boni Tan, past president of the Davao City Chamber, and Vic Lao of the Mindanao Business Council, to name just a few I know. One other thing about successful businessmen is that most of them are health-conscious. That’s why they live longer than those who are given to vices. Most of my childhood buddies and colleagues in work who smoked, drank like a fish and savored the good life in the day and night clubs like there was no tomorrow expired before reaching 60. In contrast, many of the past presidents of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. died in their late 70’s, mid-eighties, or early nineties –Ed Madrazo, Joe Sevilla, Aster Uybuco, Pete Durano, Manuel “Nonoy” Garcia are some of them.

Philamlife, the country’s leading insurance company in net income, net worth and assets, has come up with a cool advocacy – healthy lifestyle. One doesn’t have to be a Philam Life client to avail himself of the fun and opportunity get rewards involved in the advocacy. Ms Charito Haosen Azarias, unit manager in the sales agency force of Philam Life in Davao, healthy lifestyle is promoted in addition to the firm’s earlier atdvocacy on savingsand investment- consciousness. “We want to tell the people that there is a correlation between financial wealth and physical health,” said Ms Azarias who has been with Philam Life for close to 20 years now. An individual needs discipline and planning to achieve both, and that one is not truly financially well-off if all the money he accumulates in work, business or practice of a profession, only goes to medicine and management of his life-threatening diseases. And yet achieving one’s health and wellness is not necessarily expensive. No need to enroll in a gym or purchase costly exercise equipment, says Chato. One who wants to remove and extra pound earned from overeating last Christmas actually have a lot of choices. “Like eating camote instead of French fires and other junk food; walking instead of
riding a car if the destination is near; or scaling the stairs instead of using the elevator,” she said. Indeed, we are empowered to make healthy choices in our daily activities and food intake without extra cost on our pocket. Yes, choices between starchy food and fibrous food, whole wheat and brown bread. To make acceptance of the advocacy more fun and rewarding, the company has launched Philam Life Vitality app, which anybody can download and use for free. The app would track one’s health activities and then he gets rewarded like a movie pass for a milestone of 250 points in one week and other perks offered in the Philippines and other parts of the world where Philam Life’s sister companies operate. Ms Azarias said that the app is even capable of knowing one’s vitality age, by asking his or her activities. You might just be 40 years old, but your vitality age is 60, if you’re not moving enough or not eating the right food. Of all what Chato said, I like the following the most: “There are five things that we should be very mindful everyday. First is our food intake. Second is enough water intake. Third is enough amount of sleep. Fourth is physical activities. And five is financial wellness. People should manage their finances well to avoid stress which is usually the beginning of many kinds of sickness.
Wesley So: staring down at the rest of world
F there were no women and chess and wine, I would not have wished to have been born a man.”-Dr. Siegbert Tarrach, 1862-1934 Wesley So is taking the world chess stage like a storm. And at the rate the 23 year old Filipino super-grandmaster who chose to play for the United States is going, only a crack at the world title held by the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen separates him from ultimate chess glory. Yet even now he is staring down at the rest of the world. With an ELO rating of 2808, he is already ranked third in the world, behind ‘fellow’ American Fabiano Caruna (2827) and Carlsen (2840). With a couple of rounds to go (as this piece is being written), he is currently in the lead of the 2017 Tata Steel chess tournament in the Netherlands with seven out of 10 points, a point ahead of Carlsen himself. The tournament, held in the town of Wijk aan Zee, is dubbed the “Wimbledon of Chess,’ because it is the strongest annual event in chess. Its annual staging never fails to draw most of the world’s top 20 grandmasters under one roof in a battle of wits and preparation. Most often, the list of entries would include former titleholders and challengers waiting for just the opportunity to put one
over the rest in Wijk REVERSED PUNCH (GYAKU ZUKI) aan Zee. So is on fire and the world is finally taking notice. He closed out 2016 by winning the Grand Chess Tour in London Jimmy K.Laking and the prize of $75,000 in a field that included Carlsen. In all, he collected $295,000 last year from a string of tournament victories. Not too bad for a kid who left the Philippines for the United States when this country’s chess federation, in my opinion, simply was at a loss on how to handle a genius in its midst. After his London win, former world champion Garry Kasparov posted a message: “Congratulations to Wesley So for winning the #GrandChessTour! He showed great consistency and, bad news for opponents, he’s still improving.—Gary Gasparov” He was also proving hard to beat. A 53game winning streak compiled in 2016 allowed So to leap-frog in rating and proved he
was no flash in the pan but a real gem in the trough that is certain to brighten up the chess galaxy for some time to come. Fabiano Caruana, his teammate in the American team, would later comment on So: “Something must have clicked for him because he’s improved a lot, at least in terms of results recently. He doesn’t go on rampages or anything, but he quietly accumulates points.” To understand the company that So keeps, only a few mortals managed to breach the 2800 mark. Kasparov once skyrocketed to 3096 but has since settled to 2851 and has not been active of late. Aside from Carlsen, Caruano and So, the following are in that elite company, to include Levon Aronian (Armenia) with 2830, Maxime Vachier La Grave 2819, Viswanathan Anand 2817, Vladimir Kramnik 2817, Veselin Topolov 2816, Hikamura 2816 and Alexander Grischuk 2801. Former world champion Anatoly Karpov, who beat Korchnoi in Baguio City in 1973, managed to reach 2876 but has since pulled out of competition. Robert Bobby Fischer, the world champion in the late 1960s who came to Davao in 1967 to play a match with national master Jose Pascual, went up only to 2690 while Boris Spaasky whom Fischer defeated to win the title posted only 2480. Eugene Torre, the Filipino chess icon,
managed to peak at 2580 but has since skidded to 2495 as of the 2017 ratings. And by contrast, the highest rated Filipino player right now is Julio C. Sadorra with 2587, followed by Oliver Barbosa at 2518, Torre at 2495, Mark Paragua at 2490, John Paul Gomez 2490, Rogelio Antonio 2481, Joseph Sanchez 2475, Rogelio Barcenilla 2455, Richard Bitoon 2454, and Darwin Laylo 2451. Barring a last-round loss, So is on course to add the Wijk aan Zee super-tournament to his list of impressive accomplishments. Chess like boxing and not basketball, indeed holds part of the key to this country’s search for sports greatness. Below is a typical So masterpiece accomplished when he was only in his teens. During So’s tournament victory at Bad Wiessee in 2006, he earned a creativity award in the Russian magazine e3e5 for the following game, where he won in spectacular fashion: 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5. e5 Nfd7 6. Bxe7 Qxe7 7. f4 a6 8. Nf3 b6 9. Qd2 c5 10. Nd1 O-O 11. c3 f6 12. Bd3 a5 13. O-O Ba6 14. exf6 Qxf6 15. Ng5 g6 16. Ne3 h5 17. Rae1 Bxd3 18. Qxd3 cxd4 (see diagram) 19. Davao Light’s do’s, don’ts Firm to build school building in avoiding electrical fire
D
ESPITE the pretty rainy and gloomy weather that we have experienced for the past weeks, various cases of fire incidents have been reported. Electricity, if not handled well, may cause accidents such as house fire. However, it’s not only electrical faults that start fires, most of the time it is caused by human error. Davao Light and Power Co. listed simple do’s and don’ts to help you prevent electrical fires from happening:
Do’s: 1. Check-ups are important. Check the condition of your wiring as well as all your electrical outlets regularly. Replace any damaged electrical cords and wires that have burn marks or gets hot when in use. Contact an accredited electrician immediately to check them. 2. Switch off and be safe. Turn off any electrical equipment after using them, especially at night, when everyone is asleep to avoid untoward incidents.
3. Cover up! Replace broken wall plates over the outlets so there are no exposed electrical wiring.
Don’ts: 1. Overloading is a big no, no. Extensions and plug adaptors are common in the home and are a great help. However, they do have a limit to the number of amps they can take. Take caution not to overload them because this will lead to overheating and as doing so increases the risk of fire. 2. Snaking wires underneath carpets. Prevention is better than cure. Avoid placing electrical cords under carpets, rugs and furniture where they are hidden. If they are damaged or frayed, this could end up causing fire. Try placing electrical cords in areas where they are not often stepped on or tampered within any way. Safety should always be our main priority. Being vigilant and prepared are necessary because accidents can happen in a blink of an eye and after all, prevention is still better than cure. (PR)
EXTEND WITHIN LIMITS. Extension cords are not for permanent usage. If the need for a power supply in a certain part of your house is frequent and deemed necessary, have a registered electrician install a direct wiring for safety. Extension wires also have various capacities. Plugging in too many devices will only leave you with either a burnt extension wire or your entire house in ashes and smoke.

TWO-STOREY school building will be constructed soon by power producer Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) at a public school in Maasim town in Sarangani Province in honor of President Rodrigo R. Duterte. Tomas Alcantara, SEC chair, announced the initiative during the formal ground breaking ceremony on Thursday afternoon for the second 105-megawatt (MW) section of the company’s USD570 million coal-fired power plant in Barangay Kamanga in Maasim, led by President Rodrigo Duterte. President Duterte also led the ceremonial switch-on of
SEC’s first 105-MW component, which began commercial operations in April last year. Alcantara said the new school building will be built at the Mangelen Integrated School in Barangay Kamanga. “As an expression of our gratitude to your coming down, to preside over this ceremony and to celebrate with us, we are building in your honor a two-storey school building,” he said. He noted that the company’s successes the past years are “much like of President Duterte’s.” “(It) comes from the strength of our conviction,
the determination to do what is right, and the unwavering support of individuals who see as fighting a good fight,” he said. Along with the power plant’s expansion, Alcantara said SEC will continue with its support initiatives in communities in Maasim and the neighboring areas. He specifically cited the company’s scholarship program, school building projects, provision of books and other educational materials as well as training for teachers. SEC, which is part of the Alsons Power Group, is 75 percent controlled by the Alcantara Group’s Alsons
Consolidated Resources, Inc. while the remaining 25 percent is owned by Toyota Tsusho Corporation, the trading company of the Toyota Group. Alsons Power said it has already provided scholarships to around 4,000 elementary, high school and college students, and donated 40 fully-furnished classroom and library buildings in this city, Zamboanga City and Sarangani Province. It has supported some 3,045 school children under the summer reading program of the Alcantara Group’s social development arm Conrado and Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation Inc. (PNA)
ROUND 1,000 Listahanan identified poor families in Barangays Panacan and Agdao in Davao City will receive bags of blessing from Metrobank Foundation on Saturday, January 28, in time with the celebration of Chinese New Year. Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Judy M. Taguiwalo led the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) of the Bags of Blessing Project (BOB) with Metrobank Foundation last Monday. The signing was held at DSWD National Capital Region in Manila. The distribution of the bags will be led by DSWD 11 Director Mercedita P. Jabagat together with Metrobank Davao Officers. The event will be held at the DSWD 11 Compound at the corner of R. Magsaysay
Ave. and D. Suazo Streets. The Bags of Blessing Project is an annual nationwide gift-giving project of Metrobank wherein 10,000 bags filled with food items (grocery and snack food for children) worth P1,000.00 will be distributed to 10,000 poorest families listed in DSWD’s Listahanan but are not beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino program. “These 1,000 beneficiaries are from Davao City. Our role in this project is validation of the list in coordination with City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) and social workers from concerned barangays, to provide augmentation support to DSWD staffs to fast track the evaluation,” Listahanan Focal Person and Policy and Plans Division Chief Estrella D. Brigole said. “We are thankful for this
partnership with Metrobank because we are able to give assistance to our identified poor who are not covered by Pantawid Pamilya but who are also economically marginalized,” she added. The Bags of Blessing Project is funded by GT Foundation, Inc., the foundation of Mr. George Ty’s family, owner of Metrobank.
The foundation has allotted P10 million worth of food packs this year that will be distributed to 18 cities nationwide. Listahanan is a data management system that identifies who and where the poor are. In 2016, the Listahanan second round of assessment identified 280,325 poor families in Davao Region. (PNA)

An evening of music and romance THE GRAND BALLROOM OF THE MARCO POLO DAVAO was filled with wonderful music last January 23 as it featured Sonata, a concert featuring classical western and Filipino songs performed by Manila-based soprano Stefanie Quintin, and classical guitarist Anton Luis Avila.
The concert, which was staged as a fund raiser for the Davao Museum by the Davao Museum Foundation Inc., for its 40th year celebration saw the venue filling up with friends of the Davao Museum as well as students who wanted to experience the rare classical music performance. Before the concert started, a ceremonial plaque was presented to Ms. Virginia Andersen who was instrumental in raising donations for the first major improvement and renovation of
the museum. “Mrs. Andersen was a key figure who helped the Davao Museum Foundation Inc. raise the much needed funds at that time.” said Davao Museum Foundation president Patria G. Montemayor. The concert started in earnest with Stefanie serenading the audience with songs from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic Eras for the first half of the program. Her rendition of Franz Schubert’s Ave Maria literally brought chills down my spine with her clear yet powerful voice. Between the first and send half of the concert, Davao-based child prodigy and pianist Martina Audrey Uyboco played three clas-

6 FENG SHUI TIPS BEFORE STARTING YOUR BUSINESS
APPLYING FENG SHUI TO YOUR BUSINESS is a great way to achieve balance, calm and even success. Feng shui is an age-old science that can be described simply as balancing man with nature. It’s very common for businesses to apply feng shui principles to their workspaces, habits and schedules. But did you know it’s also possible to apply feng shui before you even start a business? In fact, there are a few principles that you should think about before you consider going into business in the first place. One of the country’s leading feng shui practitioners and experts, Master Francis Gaw, are giving tips to those who want to delve into a business. Here are some of his helpful tips and requirements that influence who, when and where to open your business, as well as some feng shui advice on how to keep it going strong. DO determine if you’re made to be a businessman. As they say, ‘Leaders are born, not made.’ According to Francis, so are businessmen. He states, “If your birthday is right (you were born on the right day, in the right year) you might be born a businessman.” The best way to find out is by consulting a credible feng shui practitioner
1
and telling him your exact birth date, but if you’re afraid of the answer, don’t worry. He adds that, “If you are born not to be a businessman but you want to have a business, your solution is to find a partner who is born a businessman.” Additionally, he also adheres to logic above superstition, so he adds that before feng shui, there are two more important things to consider – feasibility, and the human factor (whether or not you know the business well, whether you have the skill to handle it, etc.). DON’T start your business during the Ghost Month. This is a commonly believed superstition, and it still stands to this day. In fact, you
2
NOW SHOWING
shouldn’t start anything during the Ghost Month – weddings, businesses, moving out, etc. This year, the Ghost Month falls on August 22 to September 19, so make sure you aren’t starting your business anywhere within that range. Also, there will always be good days and bad. For example, good days to start a business in February 2017 include the 5th, 14th and 23rd. So consult a practitioner to know if your target launch date is a good one, or a recipe for misfortune. DO set up in a place you’re comfortable in. Generally, when you’re choosing an office space, look for one that is well-ventilated, bright, and relaxing as soon as you enter. If you feel something wrong, eerie or heavy about a place, it’s probably best not to take it – or at least, to have someone cleanse the place before you set up. Arrangements of objects and décor are only second priority to finding a place that’s peaceful, comfortable and good for work. DON’T adhere to all symbols and superstitions. Contrary to popular belief,

Francis says that only 30% of superstitions should really be followed. Tumbok sa kalye – not setting up at a t-junction – is a superstition to remember, as well as having crystals in your workplace or even on your person. Crystals release piezoelectricity, which science itself has found to be a positive energy that can improve your temperament throughout the day. Water is also an important symbol, although you should check with an expert on where it should or should not be placed in your office. DO push for sustainability. It’s the only real secret, according to Francis. It’s the foolproof habit – keeping yourself in the market, staying in the know, consistently pushing through both profit and loss – and it’s the only one that’s proven to work 100% of the time. As Francis says, “Sustain your business, and one day you will harvest your crop.”

DON’T think luck is all that matters. It’s easy to pretend that with feng shui and good luck, your business will boom whether or not you’re working for it. But even the experts themselves debunk that theory. Francis adds, “Even if you are lucky, if you are not hardworking, what will happen to you? But if you are unlucky, even if you’re just at home, bad luck will come to you.” In the end, our destiny still depends on hard work, faith and prayer, plus a little bit of luck. As Francis says, we find signs through feng shui. Dates, experiences, and occurrences can point the way, but what matters is that we find them so they can lead us to where we want and need to be. Dayanghirang taps DA funds to help farmers in disaster-affected areas
T
HE Province of Davao Oriental is set to receive aid from the Department of Agriculture in support to its recovery program in areas affected by heavy floods and landslides brought about by the tail-end of a cold front. DA Secretary Manny Piñol, during a meeting cum forum with the leaders of the provinces in Davao Region held today, January 26, 2017, at the Provincial Capitol of Compostela Valley Province, has vowed to provide aid to the provinces badly affected by the calamity, particularly in terms of the rehabilitation of the agriculture sector. “I know that this is a painful time for you. But don’t worry we are here to help. We will give it and we will give it fast,” he said, stressing the national government’s commitment to extend quick assistance to the affected residents. A proposed rehabilitation plan prepared by the DA Regional Office for the provinces in Davao Region was presented to the Secretary during the meeting. Based on the plan, a total of P69.2 million budget is initially set for the whole region. In the ensuing days, the department will be sending in teams to
the provinces to further assess the damages and validate the required funding support. According to Provincial Agriculture Office Head Rotchie Ravelo, the Province of Davao Oriental has initially requested P10 million from the department to help farmers in their recovery efforts. He said the partially assessed damage to the province’s agriculture sector, as of January 25,is estimated to be at around P21.8 million, with rice crop incurring the major damage pegged at P 3.3 million. He said there is also huge loss in other crops such as are corn, banana, cacao, vegetables, coconut, and abaca. Meanwhile, the projected cost of damage to livestock is P1.2 million. While the interventions that will be provided by the DA are mostly planting materials and farm inputs such as seedlings, fingerlings, fertilizers, and farming implements, among others, Secretary Piñol stressed the need to make long-term interventions for the agriculture sector that will result to a more sustainable recovery and development. He said that heavy rains and flooding can occur at any given
time brought about by the effects of climate change. “We need to look at the problem from a longer and wider perspective. We should not look at all this flooding in the context of a disaster. This should be perceived and reviewed in the context of a problem that will come back again and again if we don’t come up with long-lasting interventions,” he said, citing long-standing plans such as the Agusan River Basin Development Plan that if pushed through would benefit the provinces in the region and will mitigate the threats of future disasters such as flooding that is mainly caused by the overflowing of the River. Meanwhile, the Province of Davao Oriental has proposed several long-term projects in support to agriculture. Among these are projects in Barangay Taocanga in Manay town, which include a 22-kilometers farm-to-market road touted to benefit five upland barangays whose residents are mostly abaca farmers. Another is an irrigation system touted to expand upland rice plantation in Taocanga from 50 hectares to 200 hectares. (Karen Lou Deloso/PIO DavOr)

Go sparks Team Duterte’s win over IBP T
EAM Duterte completed an improbable comeback by pulling off a nail-bitting, 94-90, overtime victory over IBP Davao on Friday night at the Genesis 88 Gym in Ecoland. Sec. Christopher “Bong” Go piloted the massive fightback hitting five triples on his teams pivotal 17-0 blast
in the winding seconds of the third period. The Special Assistant to the President scored 43 points with nine triples for Team Duterte which rallied back from a 10 points down, 57-47 en route to its third straight win. With the win, Team Duterte boost its series lead
to 3-0. IBP Davao came out strong early and managed to sustain in the final half taking a double digit lead. But they struggled to maintain the pace down the stretch and failed to contain the hot-shooting of Go to absorb another heartbreaking loss.
Armand Dioso paced the National IBP League champions with 22 points as three others put up double digits. Adrian Paguican, Ongkiko and Cadiogan made 18, 12 and 11 respectively. Eugene Labor and Joel Aberilla contributed 14 and 13 points for Team Duterte
which got support from Maj. Solamo of Presidential Security Group and Lawyer Michael Peloton of Office of the Special Assistant to the President (OSAP). Two officials from Philippine Air Force - Yambing and Guanzon - also suited up for Team Duterte.
half, we figured it out.’’ Harden had 36 points after halftime. Nene added 21 points for the Rockets, who snapped a two-game skid while winning for just the fourth time in 10 games. Embiid had 32 points and seven rebounds in his return to the lineup after missing the last two games with a knee contusion. Embiid, who was questionable until about 45 minutes before tipoff, showed that he was just fine with an emphatic, left-handed dunk over Nene for Philadelphia’s first two points that drew loud cheers from the 76ers’ large crowd. ‘’You’re not going to see a more jaw-dropping play in the league, really,’’ 76ers coach Brett Brown said. It was also the 7-foot2 center’s first game since Thursday’s announcement that he was not among the reserves chosen for the AllStar Game, which some in Philadelphia considered a snub. ‘’He’s a problem,’’ Harden said. ‘’Big, athletic, can shoot the 3. He has an extremely bright future as you can see.’’ The streaking 76ers lost for just the third time in the last 11 games. The Rockets were without second-leading scorer Eric Gordon, who missed his second straight game with a back injury. But the relentless Harden made up for Gordon’s absence. ‘’You saw a legitimate candidate for MVP,’’ Brown said. Philadelphia’s coach
didn’t second-guess his decision not to double-team Harden. ‘’You have to pick your poison,’’ he said. ‘’You say, what sword are we going to die on? And you saw it.’’ Houston snapped a 61all halftime tie with a 12-0 run over the first 2:51 of the second half. Harden scored 10 of the points, including a dunk that made it 75-63. Houston’s lead reached as high as 13 in the period, and the Rockets entered the fourth ahead 94-82 after Harden’s stepback baseline jumper as time expired.

NDONESIA team captain Andrian Raturandang can only hope for the best in the forthcoming Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II tie against host Philippines. Playing minus No. 1 player Christoper Rungkat, the Indonesians have prepared and are ready to take on Team Philippines, spearheaded by world No. 22 doubles player, Filipino-American Treat Huey. “This is our best team. Every team has a chance to win. We come here without Christopher, so it is a bit of more challenge for us. But we are still optimistic because we believe anything is possible,” said Raturandang in an interview on Friday. Team Indonesia is composed of David Agung Susanto, Aditya Hari Sasongko, Sunu-Wahyu Trijati and Anthony Susanto, who is playing for the national squad for the first time. The 25-year-old David Agung Susanto is currently No. 739 in the world. He is a clay court specialist who owns four doubles titles and has played in four Davis Cup ties. Except for Anthony Susanto, all three players were part of the team that scored a 5-0 victory over Sri Lanka in the Group II relegation playoff tie last year. Anthony, who is the younger brother of David, is currently ranked No. 5 in Indonesia. Raturandang, on his second year as captain of t h e Davis
Cup team, described Anthony “as our new promising player”. The Indonesian delegation has arrived in the country on Thursday to have more time to get familiar with the court surface at the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA). ”I think that the PCA is okay although I know that the venue is so different and it’s a bit difficult to play there. Many players got cramps when they played there and I also played there,” said Raturandang, a member of the squad that won over the Philippines 3-2 in the Davis Cup Group I tie in 1997. When asked to comment on their chances against the Filipino Cuppers, Raturandang said the Philippines is a strong team as he took note of previous ties. ”I know Treat Huey is a really good doubles player. The Philippines is really lucky to have him on the team,” said the 40-year-old Indonesian team captain. Indonesia has beaten the Philippines six times in 10 meetings, the last being in 2012 (3-2) in their home turf. The Philippines, on the other hand, last won over Indonesia in 1999 in Jakarta. (PNA)

by far sold some 40,000 tickets and the PPV price is at a prohibitive $59.99, the same price as the Mayweather-Pacquiao megafight. Most pubs across Australia will be showing the fight. If the Mundine-Greene fight could pack the crowd in, imagine how much crowd the Pacman vs. Hornet fight would attract at the Suncorp Stadium if the fight ever happens there. The Pacquiao-Horn fight looms as Australia’s biggest
boxing bonanza ever. The fight contract, however, has not yet been signed by Pacquiao as of Wednesday. There are speculations around boxing circles that Pacquiao will just be using the Horn fight to boost the demand for another megafight with Floyd Mayweather to close out his career. He is expected to breeze through the Brisbane-based former Olympian and PE teacher.

HE 76ers closely guarded Houston’s potent 3-point threats rather than double-team James Harden, and Houston’s All-Star guard made them pay with a memorable offensive performance. Harden scored 51 points and added 13 rebounds and 13 assists to lead the Rockets to a 123-118 victory over Joel Embiid and Philadelphia on Friday night. Harden, who had 19 of his points in the third quarter, has at least 30 points and 10 assists in 18 games this season. The NBA’s third-leading scorer entering the game, Harden finished two points shy of tying his career high. He was 16 for 28 from the field, including 6 for 11 from 3-point range, while making 13 of 14 free throws. ‘’He played about as good as you can play,’’ Houston coach Mike D’Antoni said. ‘’I’ve been around a lot of players, but it doesn’t get much better than that. I’ve never seen better than that.’’ Harden recognized Philadelphia’s strategy and took advantage. ‘’Just tried to be aggressive (in) attack mode and make plays for my teammates,’’ he said. ‘’They weren’t leaving our shooters, so we had to figure different ways to be aggressive and attack them. Dragic leads Heat past Bulls 100-88
T
HE mantra of every struggling team is to keep working and things will eventually turn around. Although it rarely works out that way, the Miami Heat are trying to be the exception. Goran Dragic had 26 points and 11 assists, Willie Reed scored 20 points and Dion Waiters added 19 to lead the Heat to their sixth straight win Friday night, a 100-88 victory over the bickering Chicago Bulls.
Dragic was asked what has pleased him most about the streak following an 11-30 start. ‘’That we’re doing it as a team,’’ he said. ‘’We’re playing for each other, we’re fighting for each other. Everybody’s feeling comfortable. We know what we need to do. As long as we take care of business with the defense, we feel like can play with anyone.’’ Dwyane Wade had 15 points to lead the Bulls, who
began the day with a team meeting and ended it with a second straight frustrating loss. Wade and Jimmy Butler started the controversy when they questioned the desire of the team’s younger players following a loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. Rajon Rondo fired back a day later, criticizing Wade and Butler in an Instagram post. All three players were fined, and Wade and Butler were held out of the starting
lineup as punishment. ‘’We obviously had a very emotional day,’’ coach Fred Hoiberg said. ‘’It’s not an excuse for how we played. It’s the worst game we’ve played all year, in my opinion.’’ Butler was the first off bench and received a loud ovation from the United Center crowd when he checked in with 6:53 remaining in the first quarter. Wade also received a loud ovation when he entered 28 seconds later.

BOXING ON THE UPSWING Boxing interest is surging with Green-Mundine and Pacquiao-Horn fights By NEILWIN JOSEPH L. BRAVO
P
njb@edgedavao.net
ERTH, Australia – All of a sudden, boxing is catching up with other sports in terms of interest in the land Down Under. These days, it’s just as hot as summer. Known for its passion for footy, rugby and cricket, boxing is like third rate when it comes to drawing the interest of Aussie sports fans. It has changed lately, and what a perfect time it is for Top Rank promoter Bob Arum to bring his boxing promotions to the country whose most notable contributions to boxing are Jeff Fenech, Kostya Tszyu, and half Aussie Vic Darchinyan. The sports world here is ‘intrigued’ with boxing legend Manny Pacquiao’s much-awaited fight against Brisbane’s former Olympian Jeff Horn on April 23 in Brisbane although the fight has not been signed by the fighting senator from the Philippines. The fight is seen by many
as a win-win situation for most parties. For Australia, the superfight will be the biggest yet in history and one that could put the country in the boxing map of venues for many upcoming promotions. For Horn, it is the biggest fight of his young career, one that could bring in some fortune and a lot of global attention, win or lose. He is set for a radio interview with Nova, a popular millennial FM radio station, on Monday in a lead up to the fight. On the other hand, Mundine is Australia’s two-time WBA super-middleweight title who held the title from 2003 to 2004 and 2007 to 2008. He was also IBO middleweight title from 2009 to 2010, and the WBA interim super-welterweight title from 2011 to 2012. Before moving to boxing, Mundine was the highest paid player in the NRL.
