Message from the Board Chair The Edge School Mission Statement, “to build a culture of personal excellence in academics, athletics and character”, guides the focus of our board and the work of our valued staff, each and every day. Our student-athletes are at the heart of everything we do and are the focal point of every decision that we make. The entire Edge community helps support, facilitate and grow our continuous improvement mandate and our culture of personal excellence. The Edge community is a collection of families, students, staff, partners and volunteers. This report and our Strategic Plan reflect the work of all stakeholders within our community and is clearly aligned with our mission. The Edge Society Board of Directors is very pleased with the results contained within this report and we endorse the 3 Year Plan. There are a few things that our Board of Directors would like to highlight: • • •

100% of our grade 12 students were eligible for the Rutherford Scholarship, compared with 60.8% of the province. Our diploma exam results continue to be well above provincial averages and we are sustaining the best results in the school’s history. The same is true for our PAT results. Our character development program is weaved into everything that we do, from academic and athletic programs to special events and projects. Our recently enhanced Character Development Framework captures the comprehensive, multi-faceted approach used to provide the best leadership opportunities for our students. On the athletic front, our student-athletes continue to be presented with a vast array of opportunities that will allow them to move on to the next level in their chosen sports.

I would like to extend a special thank-you to our Parents, Parent Council and Board Members for their ongoing support. I would also like to thank our staff for their professionalism for their commitment to making a true difference in the lives of our student-athletes. Sincerely, J. Paul Charron Chair, Edge School for Athletes Society Board

Summary of Accomplishments As a result of the continued efforts of all Edge stakeholders, we are very proud of the results that we have once again been able to achieve. • We have an overall excellence rating in the following areas: o safe and caring schools o student learning opportunities o student learning achievement (K-9) o student learning achievement (10-12) o parent involvement • 100% of our grade 12 students are eligible for a Rutherford Scholarship (compared to 60.8% of the province). • We have continued our 5 year trend of very positive PAT and diploma exam results, in terms of both acceptable and excellence levels. • As part of our character development and leadership focus, it is great to see the spirit of volunteerism which continues to grow within the school and by extension into the larger community. • In spite of the challenges with the economy, we are maintaining high retention levels and new families are excited about our combined academic, athletic and character programs. • The addition of grade 4 this past year was met with great enthusiasm. This successful new program represents the beginning of our expansion to include K-3 over the next few years.

Comment on Results The results continue to be excellent. After 2 years of a slight decrease (while still far above provincial average) in both the acceptable standard and the standard of excellence, we have experienced an increase year over year in both areas. While 92.4% is very high, we will continue to find ways to get our acceptable standard even closer to 100%. Strategies We will continue to provide tutorial time 2 times a week for our junior high students in order to allow them to get assistance in areas where it is most required. Teachers will enhance formative assessment techniques, including the use of exit slips. Our professional development days for 2016-2017 are focused on two initiatives: student engagement through the competencies and assessment techniques that will improve student success.

Comment on Results We continue to be very proud of the diploma exam results (91.9% acceptable standard and 30.4% standard of excellence). Our students continue to achieve these commendable results in spite of sport schedules that require 20-40 hours of training per week. In line with our continuous improvement mindset, we will continue to find ways to get our acceptable standard even closer to 100%. We are very pleased with the fact that 100% of our graduating students are eligible for a Rutherford Scholarship (compared with 60.8% of the province). Once again, our high school to post-secondary transition rate is very misleading. While almost 100% of our students move on to post-secondary studies, many of our students attend universities outside of Alberta. Since the above reported number only tracks students who transition to universities within Alberta, it appears that our transition rate is low when in fact it is well over double the number posted. Furthermore, a number of our students pursue an athletic pathway that has them access post-secondary opportunities on a delayed timeframe (and often on scholarships outside of Alberta). Because of their training schedules, a number of our students will complete some 30 level courses through ADLC or through other summer school options. This has a negative impact on our data for the percentage of students who write 4 or more diploma exams.

Strategies We have built in tutorial time 3 times a week for our senior high students in order to allow them to get assistance in areas where it is most required. Teachers will enhance formative assessment techniques, including the use of exit slips. One of our professional development initiatives is to focus on assessment techniques that will improve student success. We have maintained our Career Practitioner on contract for a second year in order to help students with career and post-secondary decisions. We have implemented the use of MyBlueprint as a means for students to work with teachers on setting goals and planning for life after high school. Notes: 1. Results have been adjusted to reflect the change from previous data source systems to Provincial Approach to Student Information (PASI). 2. Due to the change from previous data source systems to Provincial Approach to Student Information (PASI), historical Rutherford Scholarship Eligibility Rate results are not available. 3. Comment on Results We are very pleased that 94.1% of our stakeholders agree that students are taught attitudes and behaviors that will make them successful at work when they finish school. We want to find even more ways to engage students through classroom activities and learning opportunities that will help them develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will help them be successful and contributing global citizens. Strategies Student engagement is the second area of focus for our professional development initiatives this year. As such, we will be working with the CRC on 2 of our PD days to focus on engaging students through an integration of the competencies (an interrelated set of attitudes, skills and knowledge that are drawn upon and applied to real world context) into their classroom practices.

Comment on Results Given that character is one of the 3 foundational aspects of our integrated spheres model, it is very important for us to meet or exceed our targets in the area of citizenship. We continue to be pleased with our results in this area. Strategies We are in the process of completing a comprehensive review of our character development program, and we are making some adjustments to the framework. As a result, we have developed a new template for each of our character development lesson plans in order to ensure that there is a purposeful link to our framework principles in all activities that we do. As part of our character development program review, we are looking at finding ways to increase the number of opportunities that our students have to volunteer and give back to the community. We are reviewing our process for transitioning new students into the school to ensure that there is an understanding with respect to the significance and expectations of character within the Edge culture.

Comment on Results Given the specialized nature of our programming, we do not have the breadth of options that would be available in a more traditional program. Based on discussions with our stakeholders, we believe that they understand the nature of our school and the resulting limitations in terms of programs like drama, art and music. Enhancements to drama, art and music would mean less time on our sport and physical activity programming, which parents have stated that they do not want. In spite of this, because of the wording of the question, it is likely that our ratings on this measure will continue to be low. Strategies Once again, the strategy that is likely to have the greatest impact on this survey measure really has nothing to do with changes to program offerings. We will continue to try and inform our parents regarding the nature of the wording of the question in our context. We will continue to offer Art 10, 20 and 30 to students as an option inside the schedule. We will also offer these courses through an online option (with teacher support) for students who have scheduling conflicts but still want to pursue art classes.

Comment on Results In discussing the results with parents and members of our Parent Council review committee, it seems like the results of the improvement question may even be better than the data suggests. A significant number of our parents and students who are new to the school answered ‘don’t know’ to the question as to whether or not our school has improved in the last 3 years. Of course, this makes sense as a response if you are new to the school, but it records as a negative on the overall survey results. We are very pleased that 96.6% of all stakeholders are satisfied with the overall quality of Education at Edge. Strategies We have started an initiative to get more involvement and feedback from our parent community. We have launched a ‘feedforward’ forum. All parents will be encouraged to meet with the CEO or Principal one on one. These meetings will be an opportunity for parents to identify opportunities for growth and improvement. They are also a chance for parents to let us know what is working well. We want to continue to tap into an engaged parent council group. 6 parent council members were part of a committee who reviewed the AERR results and provided feedback for this report. We will have further discussions at parent council meetings in order to devise specific strategies to involve more parents.
