Welcome from Dean Owston Welcome back to all returning Consecutive TCs! And an especially warm welcome to all of the new TCs. You are the pioneers in the new two-year extended BEd program. We have developed a new innovative curriculum that will challenge you academically as well as prepare you for the classroom unlike any other program. I urge all of you to become involved in FESA as it is among the strongest student organizations on campus. Also you will find that there are many University committees that are looking for student representatives so please step up and volunteer. You will find this a fascinating experience in learning how York is governed. Best wishes for the coming year and I look forward to shaking your hand when you walk across the stage at Convocation!
Presidential Welcome & Remarks I would like to welcome you to the 2015/2016 school year with the Faculty of Education at York University – we are getting geared up for a wonderful year together! My name is Molly McFarlane and I am the President of the Faculty of Education Students’ Association (FESA). FESA is a non-profit, levyfunded student association that works as a liaison between the Faculty of Education and its students. FESA works to help guide you through your degree by supporting you with various professional development workshops and conference opportunities. As President, my responsibilities include being a direct link between FESA and the Faculty of Education, managing the main e-mail account for FESA and conducting full council and executive team meetings. I am currently pursuing an HBA majoring in sociology and minoring in English while concurrently completing my Bachelor of Education degree in General Social Science and English as my two teachable subjects. This is my fourth year on FESA and I am thrilled to be working alongside an amazing team who are committed to ensuring your year is filled with significant professional development opportunities, opportunities to create lasting memories with your friends and colleagues, and to support you in achieving optimal success in the program. I encourage you all to embrace this year and take advantage of everything FESA has to offer you. We are here for you and cannot wait to get this year started!
Editorial Words of Welcome
My name is Nick and I am the continuing News Director on this year’s FESA council. This is my fifth and final year which makes this publication one to remember. I plan on providing you, the education students of York University, with quality articles and features dealing with education and pedagogy in both Ontario and the world. You can think of me as the Miranda Priestly of the Faculty of Education just with less grit and a little more kindness. I dress well and get the job done. The ground is my catwalk and the sun is my spotlight. If I’m not trying to take over the world, you can usually find me swapping paint colours or picking out new outfits for my new Pomeranian, Efron (yes, after Zac). Congratulations to those of you who made the 30 credit cut - as for the 60’s, I’m sorry more time to prove your worth as an educator. As of last year, council decided to move the publication online in order to save on printing costs - not to mention this is where all publications appear to be heading. All articles and submissions will be posted online as well as in our digital ISSUU publication on a monthly basis. As an education student, you are invited to share anything from art submissions, stories, personal experiences or noteworthy articles and we will try our best to publish it online. Think of us as blog but with added FESA notices, video features and relatable classroom material. Each month is connected to a topic that is used to encourage and stimulate your pedagogical brainwaves. You can stick to the theme or submit on your own - by no means is this a regulation. Our October issue takes a look at the recently implemented Health and Physical Education curriculum. November highlights issues in Indigenous Education followed by our December issue on Strength in Diversity. The new year rings into an overly generalized term and representations of various mass texts. March brings out the Einstein in us all ending sharp with issues and activism faced by many. I think you’ll enjoy it and have more to say. I encourage you to start writing if any of these topics jump at you from the start. This will officially make you a published writer! We are always looking for contributors and staff writers who are keen on becoming part of the EDible family. This is your time to read and be read. I look forward to having you on board. EXECUTIVES Vice-President Internal I have been a part of FESA for the past 3 years, and it has been a very memorable experience during my educational career. I am responsible for the Keele campus council, organizing office hours, the FESA Election period, the Concurrent Orientation and creating a bond between FESA members and Faculty of Education students. I encourage you all to check out some of our events, workshops and conferences throughout the year to create bonds with your fellow classmates or develop yourself as an educator. I’m looking forward to another year of opportunity and excitement!
Vice-President External FESA acts as a liaison between the Faculty and its students and offers guidance and support throughout your education degree. As Vice President External I will be working closely with the Consecutive students this year! I will be working with many great representatives for different cohorts of the Consecutive program to ensure all consecutive students feel a sense of comfort in their program and have the resources and guidance they may need.
Vice-President Finance As Vice-President of Finance, I hope to bring forth valuable resources and maintain proper funding which will fundamentally enable FESA to function financially and be beneficial towards your academic year. Ultimately, FESA is an absolute imperative resource in its entirety and please embrace what it has to offer you as potential teachers. Happy school year to all!
Secretary
Welcome to our new members! My name is Rene Gualtieri and I will be the secretary of FESA for the 2015-2016 academic year. This is my fourth year at York and I am entering ED 3. My undergrad program of study is Environmental Studies. Last year, I was the Director of Resource. This year, my responsibilities as secretary include room bookings, table bookings, and dealing primarily with TUUS (Temporary Use of University Space) office. I am very approachable so feel free to reach out if you are stressing about school, we can talk. Have a great year and best of luck to all!
