TEXAS COOK'EM: High Steaks in Edinburg Another great YEAR!!! Another great event for the Chamber of Commerce, EEDC and the City of Edinburg just occurred on July 4th, 2008. If you were unable to make the event, we encourage you to make the NEXT event in 2009, as each year Cook’em offers something unique to the Rio Grande Valley and Edinburg. There are many different aspects that attract spectators to our event, however the largest draw come from barbeque aficionados.
As serious as the food, also comes the fun. Each year Texas Cook’em creates an outdoor kids area for families and children to enjoy. This year, the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library in Edinburg organized “Dusty’s Corral”, which featured fun, outdoor westernthemed activities from 4-8pm. Our headliner for the 3rd annual event was Country Legend, John Conlee, who attracted a grandiose crowd as he played the night away during sun down. Not to mention, the popular Rio Grande Valley local band, Texas Heat who is always a special attraction.
Our cooks are the main event and attraction at the Annual Texas Cook’em. The passion, time and effort placed into what they do, shows through the end result. Local and out of town cooks bring in thousands of pounds of meat, raw and unseasoned, ready for inspection. As soon as each team receives an inspection they are free to begin marinating and seasoning their meat. Some cooks stay overnight to slowly smoke and barbeque their meat, and come well prepared with large pits, Rv’s, tables, chairs, and tents to boot; creating an outdoor kitchen and dining area for friends, families, and spectators to enjoy. Cook’em has a large pool of prize money ($15,000)that is definitely a BIG draw, however a lot of the cook’s who participate in Cook’em come for the friendly atmosphere that is created, and become aware of Cook’em by competitor’s word of mouth.
Cook’em is exceedingly grateful to the City of Edinburg, the Economic Development Corporation, Inter National Bank, Memorial Funeral Home, The Monitor, The Edinburg Review, South Texas Concrete, Coca Cola, and L&F Distributors for financial support and services. Also a special thanks goes out to the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library in Edinburg, Flo Prater and her friends at Rio Valley Realty, ECN 12, City Solid Waste Department, City Parks & Recreation Department, NHPO, Joe Vera: City of Hidalgo, Rene Torres, Triple E Concrete, our media partners including ECN12, South Texas Nation, Clear Channel Radio and Entravision, and of course all the competitors!

How the Chamber Has Helped Me When I decided to expand my services 2 years ago to a Storefront type business off of West University, I first went to Edinburg Chamber of Commerce. I wanted to get some feedback from the staff to help with my decision on whether or not I was going to pursue this venture. This, along with reading articles about the growing economy in Edinburg and the most obvious was just seeing all types of business being built in just about every corner of the main intersections, really made it easy in my decision that I needed to jump on the band wagon of this growing area.
With so much growth in the City of Edinburg, it kind of makes you not want to miss out on anything and ask what other business opportunities are out there. I like the fact that the chamber keeps me up to date with any functions and events that are happening within the City of Edinburg and surrounding areas. I would definitely recommend to anyone that is already in business or just starting off with a new business to utilize what the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce has to offer.
Being a member of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce has helped me tremendously. The Staff has always been helpful, personable and friendly. I have benefited from the Chamber in many ways both professionally and personal. Not only do I benefit through my business but I also enjoy the new friendships that I have made by being a member.

Economic Update by Ramiro Garza, Jr.
The Edinburg Economic Development Corporation is pleased to announce that Santana Textiles of Ceara, Brazil, one of the world’s largest denim manufacturers, plans to construct a 300,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Edinburg. Santana Textiles plans to invest $180 million and create 800 new jobs which will pump millions of dollars into the local economy.
planned for the shopping center. Overall, there should be over 1 million square feet built at the site by the end of Phase three with over 1,300 jobs.
The location of Santana Textiles in Edinburg is important for many reasons. One of the more important reasons is it provides Edinburg with primary employment which will have a far reaching positive impact on the Edinburg economy. It has been estimated that for every one manufacturing job, there are six other jobs created.
On other news, the City’s economic indicators remain very positive.
This new retail space should enhance the City’s tax base and employment but more importantly, it will provide residents with the opportunity to shop Edinburg first.
A newly released U.S. Census Bureau report has estimated Edinburg's population to be 68,724 for 2007. This represents a 42 percent increase in population from our Census count of 48,465 in July 1, 2000. This means that Edinburg is growing at a whopping 6% annually. At this growth rate, Edinburg should reach approximately 80,000 residents in 2010.
So we expect that the impact of the location of Santana Textiles will improve our economy greatly. This great news adds to the many economic development activity taking place in our City.
The latest data provided from the Texas Workforce Commission shows that Edinburg’s unemployment rate is at 4.6% which is a sign of a healthy economy. The average year-to-date unemployment rate is 4.5%
The Shoppes at Rio Grande Valley continues its Phase one construction and in August, JC Penney opened its doors along with Burlington Coat Factory. Soon after the following stores will be opening this Fall: TJ Maxx, Ross, Academy, Lane Bryant and Bath & Body Works.
The sales tax receipts for 2008 as of July show that the City of Edinburg has collected $7,894,303 which represents a 3% increase from 2007. These sales tax receipts should increase with the opening of the Shoppes at Rio Grande Valley.
So by the end of this year, there will be over 300,000 square feet of retail shopping space built at the Shoppes at Rio Grande Valley. And in 2009, Phase two should begin construction which is already under design. Along with the retail space, there are approximately 12 restaurants
