On a sunny afternoon I captured the image of the castle in my eye. To me, home is encapsulated by an afternoon in Princes Street Gardens, book in hand, under the shade of the unfailing Castle.

Taken on a gorgeous afternoon; the twilight covered all buildings, including the castle and Old College, with golden shade, which I just had to capture. In this picture, Edinburgh is like a fairy tale city I imagined in childhood.

On the day I arrived in Edinburgh, just after I got off the bus, I saw blue sky, pedestrians and the castle reflected in the bus window. I took this photo to remember my first impression of Edinburgh.

On our way home from Farmers’ Market, I saw this scene when the comforting flavours of the market were still with us: honey, vegetables, chocolates and friendships. These made me feel alive, real and at home. Life here is as colourful as this photo!

I stumbled upon this wall in a graveyard on the Royal Mile on one of my first days in Edinburgh, exploring the city with friends, getting to know our way around. I was struck by the blatant message, welcoming us to our new home for the semester.

A sunny Friday afternoon. I walk through this corner of the Meadows every day to University and back. Lives continuously intersect here as people make their way to and from their homes. Some take time to enjoy the day. The life that bustles here encapsulates my ‘home’.

Every day I walk past the Balmoral clock tower. If I am there by quarter to the hour, I will be on time to class. It is a nice way to start and end the day, and it reminds me that I am on my own time again.

Taken atop Arthur’s Seat a week after this group of study abroad students arrived in Edinburgh. We were so excited to be in the city and to have made it to the top! This picture is my view of Edinburgh, it shows the beautiful city, it’s surroundings, and the people who I spend my time with enjoying all the city has to offer.

Wanaruk Chaimayo Sandwich Lunch (a University Accommodation activity) at Blackford Hill, King’s Buildings. After having lunch, international students from West Mains Road remembered the games we played in our home countries and taught each other our games. Distance from our own country doesn’t matter because this shows we can be happy here, as if Edinburgh is our own home.

Sylvain Romain Verly Taken on Arthur’s Seat on the way to the top. My sister was resting on the grass after a long walk. Her daydreaming expression inspired me to take this picture – I think it matches this peaceful location well.

Gregor Schnuer Edinburgh International Festival Fireworks. This signifies one of the biggest turning points in my year and shows all the facets of feeling ‘at home’ in Edinburgh: international tourists, international students, visiting friends and family, freshers arriving, other students returning, reunions with friends, lively streets and long nights.

Rebecca Adams My friend who was visiting took this photo of me while walking into town for a sightseeing day in April 2009. The meadows are ‘Edinburgh as home’ for me, as it is my daily walk to/from the University and the city. This shot while the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, walking with friends, is the perfect Edinburgh day.

that encapsulates their idea of Edinburgh as “home”. Some sent photos of their friends, the place they live in, a view of the city – or something serious, funny or quirky. We received an overwhelming 173 entries – a selection of which is featured in this celebratory calendar. All the images can be viewed on the International Office Facebook page.
