Accommodation Services by 31 July 2013 that they have an unconditional offer to study at the University, which they have firmly accepted. For postgraduates from within the EU, we make every effort to try and offer University accommodation, but such offers are not guaranteed. However, we are increasingly able to help more students and would always recommend you apply.
All our properties are managed by professional Accommodation Managers supported by Residents’ Assistants who are trained students living on site.
Where we are unable to provide an offer of University accommodation we can often still offer some assistance and advice on finding alternative places to live in Edinburgh. A wealth of information, including details of private properties to rent in Edinburgh and a notice board to advertise vacant rooms in shared flats, can be found at www.studentpad.co.uk
Weekly rents typically include utility bills, some cleaning services, personal contents insurance and internet/telephone services. By way of example, rents for the 2012–2013 academic year, based on a typical 51-week lease, are in the range of £78–£135 per week. Sometimes catered accommodation will be available, based at our main accommodation campus at Pollock Halls, but information on this can only be provided closer to September in the year of entry. We guarantee an offer of accommodation to all new, single postgraduate students from outside the EU, who are studying for the whole year, starting in September – as long as their application for University accommodation is received by 31 July 2013 and they notify
The needs of a student with a partner or a family are different and we appreciate that it is sometimes difficult or expensive to find the right private accommodation. We do have some accommodation specifically for couples and families but this is limited.

The University of Edinburgh Postgraduate Concise Prospectus 2013 Entry
The University of Edinburgh is located at the heart of the city of Edinburgh, one of Europe’s great cultural capitals.
Unique Edinburgh As one of Europe’s most student-friendly cities and a major cultural centre, Edinburgh is an exciting, fascinating and welcoming place to study. Regularly voted one of the most desirable places to live in the world, Scotland’s capital has a great social and cultural life, a busy sporting calendar and a rich history. Edinburgh is well known for its friendly people, its compact, green environment and its stunning architecture. Wherever you are in the city, you are never more than two miles from open countryside.
A city of culture There is something for everyone – more than 13 million people visit Edinburgh each year to enjoy its national museums and galleries, comedy, theatre, cinemas, restaurants, pubs, clubs and world-famous Edinburgh International Festival and Festival Fringe in August. The shopping is excellent, with national stores and smaller independent shops, and you can sample world cuisine in a host of international restaurants.
Weather Edinburgh has a temperate climate. The average temperature is around 0-6°C in the winter months and around 20°C in the summer.
Edinburgh by night
The University at the heart of the city
The University at the heart of the city
Edinburgh is a city that can be enjoyed well into the night. Living here, you will notice that much of its lively cultural and social scene is geared towards the large student population, with many of the clubs, cinemas, theatre and restaurants dotted around the centre offering concessions to students.
Travel around the city Due to the compact nature of the city, most of Edinburgh’s residents get around on foot. However, there is good provision for cyclists, and an excellent bus network. The mountains, lochs, forests, fresh air and great views of the Highlands and Islands are only a few hours away. Scotland has one of the longest coastlines for a country of its size, so visiting the beach is easy and highly recommended, and watersports such as surfing and sailing are popular here.
Fact file • Edinburgh’s population is approximately 500,000. • Built on seven hills, the city comprises the Georgian New Town and the medieval Old Town. • As well as medieval sights and the grandeur of the New Town, you’ll find modern architecture such as the Scottish Parliament, Our Dynamic Earth and the Museum of Scotland. • Edinburgh is home to the world’s largest arts festival, which swells the population to 2 million during the summer. • Edinburgh is a UNESCO World Heritage city and was the first UNESCO City of Literature. • The magnificent Edinburgh Castle is dramatically perched on an extinct volcano, high above the city centre.
“Edinburgh isn’t so much a city, more a way of life… I doubt I’ll ever tire of exploring Edinburgh, on foot or in print.” Ian Rankin, best-selling crime writer and University of Edinburgh alumnus

Taught programmes
Research programmes
Masters
Masters by research
The University offers an extensive range of masters programmes. Most are designed to develop knowledge or techniques in specialised subjects previously studied more generally at undergraduate level, although some act as ‘conversion routes’, allowing students to change or develop their area of specialisation from that undertaken at undergraduate level. They can be stand-alone qualifications for career or personal development, or preparation for further research and an academic career.
An MSc by Research is a one-year programme designed specifically to prepare students for advanced research, although it can be taken as a qualification in its own right. Each programme comprises research skills and methods training relevant to a particular field of study and a substantial dissertation or research project. Many of our MSc by Research programmes offer the opportunity to study advancedlevel taught modules in your subject area drawing on our extensive range of masters (taught) programmes. An MSc by Research can be assessed by research coursework, examination and a dissertation.
Most of our masters programmes lead to the award of MSc. This applies across the spectrum of subjects available at Edinburgh, where it is necessary to distinguish postgraduate masters from our undergraduate MA degree. Other qualifications include an MBA, LLM, MMus, MEd and MTheol. The exception to this is Edinburgh College of Art where MAs and MFAs (Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts) make up the majority of postgraduate degrees awarded. Most masters are taught programmes which involve a combination of taught modules, coursework, supervised research and students are expected to write a dissertation or undertake a project. Full-time duration: 1 year
Which kind of degree is right for you?
Which kind of degree is right for you?
Full-time duration: 1 year
MPhil An MPhil is assessed by thesis. The objective of this programme is to produce a research worker who has acquired a good all-round knowledge of their subject, in-depth knowledge of a specialised area, and the research skills to carry out and present a piece of original research for submission for a higher degree. MPhil students may extend their studies to PhD registration subject to satisfactory progress. Full-time duration: 2 years
PhD Online distance learning masters/diplomas We offer a growing number of online distance learning programmes designed for those candidates who wish to undertake further study while maintaining their professional lives or other commitments. Our online distance learning programmes also allow you to join a global community of experts in your field. Duration: varying lengths of programmes are offered
Professional doctorates Professional doctorates offered by the University are specialist qualifications designed for professional development in specific areas, such as Doctor of Education (EdD), Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsychol) or Doctor of Engineering (EngD). Professional doctorates combine advanced research training, a substantial contribution to knowledge through their own research and a rigorous reflection on professional practice. Full-time duration varies between 3-7 years, depending on the programme.
A PhD is the highest academic research qualification, entailing research training and supervised research, either on a one-to-one basis with a supervisor(s) or as part of a research team. The aim of a research degree is to provide a thorough training in a particular academic area through original investigation and experiment. This allows students to acquire the specialist background knowledge for the projected research, and to develop the skills appropriate to research that field. The precise focus of the research will be agreed between the student and the supervisor and is likely to develop over the course of the PhD. The outcome of the research is embodied in a thesis written by the student, the acquisition of research skills, specialist knowledge and transferable skills relevant to a whole host of careers within academic research and elsewhere. PhD research is a challenging yet exciting undertaking which allows research students to make a significant contribution to the existing body of knowledge in their field and to work with eminent academics and experts. A PhD is assessed by an oral examination named viva voce during which the PhD candidate defends his or her research thesis. Full-time duration: 3 years

Our large and diverse research base provides outstanding opportunities for students to further their knowledge. We are following an ambitious investment strategy to enhance our facilities. One of the core objectives of the College is to encourage interdisciplinary research and learning.
“The University of Edinburgh was my first choice because I study artificial intelligence and Edinburgh’s reputation in this field is second to none; I also appreciated the flexibility of Edinburgh’s programme. You can choose from a huge range of options and those options that you don’t select to study and be examined in, are still open to you. I attended the lectures for some of the other courses to increase my knowledge in this area, and that was a great help in broadening my education.” MSc Artificial Intelligence student from India
