Early one morning, we hiked up Arthur’s Seat to watch the sun rise. We arrived at the summit just before the sun came over the horizon and had a chance to take in this amazing view of Edinburgh.

Mohammad Hirzallah from UAE, winner of 1st prize I’m very fond of the architecture in Edinburgh; the whole city feels like a large museum with sky as its ceiling! I particularly love the magic of the city at night, that’s why I enjoy doing night photography whenever I get the chance.

During a late September heat wave I ventured a couple of miles to Edinburgh’s Portobello beach and discovered, in the most unassuming of chip shops, something more Scottish than tartan socks, bagpipes or Susan Boyle - Irn Bru flavoured ice cream!

It was a fine Sunday by the Playfair Steps. I gazed up at the University’s New College towering against the stark blue sky, forming a distinct outline. It was a sight worth capturing, and I discovered the city monument in a new light.

Blackford Hill is not as popular as Arthur’s Seat although it promises rewarding views - especially for those who dare to go at night and face the cold wind. We’ve spent many nights up here, being inspired by the scenery. But that’s what we love about Edinburgh – escaping the rush of the city within 15 minutes walk!

This kind of view should only be seen in heaven, and it has been glimpsed only a few times in this world.
Ivan Zovko from Croatia, runner-up prize Nelson’s monument, taken during a warm night on top of Calton Hill, reflecting rich history blended with calmness in one of the most beautiful capitals in the world.
Melisa Mincova from Slovakia, runner-up prize Moata Elmasary from Egypt A breathtaking view of the city of Edinburgh taken from over Calton Hill just before sunset.
Muliadi Utomo Tampubolon from Indonesia, runner-up prize I was amazed when I first saw Salisbury Crags. One day, I went out and took long exposure photographs with a filter. It shows the movement of the clouds and the Salisbury Crags itself.
Taken on the Mound, and representing what I find very positive about Edinburgh, the omnipresent patriotism and the beautiful architecture.
Cao Yu from China At Edinburgh Castle we encountered the black cannon‌
Mikko Harvey from USA I wanted to show an interesting contrast between animal and society. The statue was made to raise awareness for animal conservation, and the National Gallery of Scotland is in the background.
Haoyang Zhang from China Taken near the National Gallery in October. These lights are beautiful when they form a line with a background of blue sky and Calton Hill, a familiar Edinburgh landmark. I hope to remember every beautiful moment and image of Edinburgh in times to come.
Joyce Lee from Hong Kong
Xiao Li from China
Victoria Doucette from Canada
Princes Street Gardens in midSeptember. The Scott Monument, blossoming flowers and warm sunshine in late summer were so stunning that one could not stand still.
A platform in Waverley Station when I first took a train in Edinburgh. A unique view of the Christmas ferris wheel and the Scott Monument.
I have seen no beauty as profound as the Salisbury Crags. This photo was taken in February during the hike up Arthur’s Seat.
Uula Saastamoinen from Finland
I discovered this view by intentionally taking a bus whose destination was unknown to me. Sometimes getting lost is the best way to find yourself.
I live in Stockbridge and this was my first time in the Inverleith Park, which is just around the corner. Seeing this breath-taking view to the city made me feel even more confident about the fact that coming here was the right thing to do.
Kelly Joyce Johnson from USA, Principal’s choice
Sabrina Estabrook-Russett from USA This photo is from the afternoon I spent with wild ponies, one of Scotland’s oldest indigenous breeds. They are a beautiful but quite naughty!
Sarah Meisenheimer from Germany, Principal’s choice Edinburgh at its best: Beautiful old stone houses, dark church towers and an impressive castle on a volcano. Could you imagine a better place to get kissed?
