Delivering Global Impact The launch in 2009 of the University’s International Strategy, Edinburgh Global, transformed the University’s approach to internationalisation, re-energising and broadcasting the intention to secure Edinburgh’s position as ‘a place of first choice in the minds of the world.’ The strategy aims to attract the most able students and staff to Edinburgh from anywhere in the world, provide a world-class experience and ensure that our teaching and research delivers global benefits.

To achieve this, the University must be world-leading in its impact and promote global citizenship in its community. The world’s interconnectedness should continue to be exploited and special efforts given to building strategic partnerships in regions that will impact on important global social, cultural, environmental and economic issues. This review, the third since the inception of Edinburgh Global, highlights our progress in 2011. Professor Stephen Hillier Vice Principal International

This year, the QS World University Rankings rated the University of Edinburgh 20th in the world, 5th in the UK and 6th in Europe.

Partnering We continued to develop long-term productive partnerships that augment the international standing of the University. Partnerships whether institution-wide, School-led or researcher-to-researcher should be driven by shared academic interest and focused on generating sustainable outcomes that build on the synergies between the partners.

Highlights in 2011 Global Directory www.ed.ac.uk/about/edinburgh-global/ partnerships A long standing need across the University has been to know who we

collaborate with. The Global Directory, a new resource to help develop and map international partnerships is now live via MyEd or the Edinburgh Global website. The Global Directory provides staff with web-based access to information on what international activity is happening where. It allows staff to search, display and maintain a directory of all international collaborations. In addition, enhanced due diligence procedures have been provided to help assess appropriate partner institutions and countries - given the diverse nature of international institutions and the ever changing political environment.

India agreement signed

An agreement was signed with Mr Suresh Goel, Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) that will create a Chair of Contemporary Indian Studies at the University, and will mark the first step in establishing a University of Edinburgh India Centre at Edinburgh. The ICCR seeks to foster mutual understanding between India and other countries and to promote cultural exchange. It currently funds two chairs at British universities, and also supports the Nehru Centre in London. An Honorary Degree was conferred on Mr Goel in November.

Chinese awards for Edinburgh At the sixth global Confucius Institute conference in Beijing, Principal Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea was awarded a special Gold Medal to mark the outstanding contribution of the Confucius Institute for Scotland in developing cultural, education and business links between Scotland and China. The recognition follows the four consecutive annual awards of the title ‘Confucius Institute of the Year’ that have been received by the Confucius Institute for Scotland.

Africa Tanzanian links In November, the Vice Principal International joined Tanzanian friends to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the University of Dar Es Salaam. The University of Edinburgh has historic links with UDSM whose first Chancellor was Julius Nyerere, the first President of Tanzania, who studied at Edinburgh between 1949 and 1952. Under discussion were the development of further links between the two universities, providing international opportunities for students and staff from Tanzania and the UK. In December, Dr Thomas Molony and Professor Paul Nugent from the Centre of African Studies were invited to represent the University at an event to mark the 50th anniversary of Tanzanian independence. Developing partnerships Building on the institutional-level Memorandum of Agreement signed with the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) in 2010 (the first institutional level MOU signed between the University and a sub-Saharan African university), a secondary agreement was signed that will allow South African chemistry students to study at the University. This will allow chemistry students to study initially at UKZN before transferring to Edinburgh to complete their BSc Chemistry degree. After 2 years in Edinburgh, the students will then return to UKZN to study for a Masters degree, helping South Africa to retain trained students who can contribute to the country’s economy. South African companies are expected to support the project through scholarships and assisting with research projects. “The structure of this programme - which will return students to South Africa following their period in Edinburgh – ensures that it will become embedded in the South African economy.” Dr Philip Bailey, Director of Internationalisation, School of Chemistry

The University of Edinburgh is proud to be linked with the University of Dar es Salaam through its mutual association with Julius Nyerere. We treasure the fact that he was an Edinburgh alumnus and look forward to developing a fast and enduring partnership in his name with the university that he did so much to help found 50 years ago. Stephen Hillier, Vice Principal International

North America The special relationship enjoyed with North American institutions was further consolidated by the establishment of a North America Office within the International Office that formally launched in January 2012. This office will coordinate activities in and concerning the United States and Canada and will be led by Professors Frank Cogliano and Brendan Corcoran who have been designated Deans International (North America). New undergraduate scholarships We now have more students from North America studying at the University than from any other region with over 1600 students from the USA and 400 from Canada. To demonstrate further our commitment to engagement in the region, new Principal’s North America Undergraduate Scholarships have been established for 2012 entry. www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/studentfunding Partnering with Yale In partnership with Yale, we will aim to develop a joint programme of combined clinical teaching, skills in evaluating new clinical research and applying relevant research findings to patient care supported by a new training and mentorship link scheme. This will strengthen the capacity of both Edinburgh and Yale to work together in translating emerging bodies of research in the care of patients and medical education. The programme will be specifically working with a third partner, the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Rwanda, with the ultimate aim to support Rwandan health care.

United States Ambassador visited the University in October

Europe Framework Programme 7 (FP7) The University signed 51 Grant Agreements with the European Commission (EC) during 2011 with an EC contribution of around €26M. Since the start of FP7, which began in 2007, the University has signed a total of 216 Grant Agreements.

Advanced Grant and 4 Starting Grants with a total EC contribution of around €7.5M. The ERC funds exceptional, established researchers, pursuing groundbreaking, high-risk projects. Since 2007, Edinburgh has been awarded 21 ERC Advanced and Starting Grants with a total value of €31M.

The Grant Agreements signed during 2011 included 4 multi-partner collaborative research projects involving partners from across Europe and beyond where Edinburgh was the coordinating institution. Edinburgh was also successful in securing funding from the European Research Council (ERC) including 1

Additionally, the University had another successful year in securing funds from the FP7 People Programme with 13 Marie Curie awards. This included 2 Initial Training Networks, 1 research staff exchange project led by Edinburgh in collaboration with partners from Spain and Brazil, plus 10 individual

fellowships with researchers moving to Edinburgh from around the world for two years, including France, USA, Spain, Netherlands, Finland, France, USA, India and China. Student mobility Numbers of students studying in Europe on the Erasmus student exchanges programme has consistently increased each year, with 425 students studying abroad in Europe this year. The new EU Work Placement Programme, which supports students taking work placements in Europe continues to attract a greater level of interest from University of Edinburgh students each year.

Outreach & Influence In 2011 we explored new ways to work collaboratively with schools across the city and beyond, to provide more opportunities for pupils to gain a global perspective and increase the attraction of Edinburgh as an international city of learning. The Global Environment & Society Academy was launched adding to the Global Health and Global Development Academies thus encouraging further innovative interdisciplinary teaching, research and outreach in challenging global topics. We also aimed to use networks and alumni more effectively as a vehicle for internationalisation to advance the University’s work abroad.

Highlights in 2011 Global website The Edinburgh Global website (www.ed.ac. uk/edinburgh-global) is key to our outreach activity and continues to be the focus for

our internationalisation activities. In 2011, the Global Directory was launched and visitors to the site in total increased by more than 100%.

between the University of Edinburgh, the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN), James Gillespie’s High School in Edinburgh and Zwelibanzi High School in Umlazi, Durban. Umlazi is one of the poorest areas in Durban and James Gillespie’s pupils have been engaged in activities at Zwelibanzi for many years. The outreach vision is for the link between UKZN and University of Edinburgh to be developmental in helping Umlazi pupils access higher education at UKZN, and perhaps Edinburgh.

Edinburgh International City of Learning The concept of Edinburgh International City of Learning was formalised in a ‘town and gown’ signing ceremony in June. This network of Edinburgh Universities, Colleges and schools aims to explore ways of working collaboratively to provide opportunities for pupils to gain a global perspective and increase the attraction of Edinburgh as an international city of learning. For example, under the banner of Edinburgh International City of Learning we are promoting:

3. Partnership with various Cultural Institutes to promote modern languages in our schools.

1. The City of Edinburgh schools' Get Set for the Games Project, based around the 2012 Olympics which involves our international students going into schools.

4. The Confucius Classroom Project which brings together schools, the Confucius Institute and the Confucius Classroom Hub for the study of Chinese culture and language.

2. Existing South African school links to expand and involve universities - development of quad-partite links

5. Work with Festivals Edinburgh to enhance the educational element of the Festivals.

Global Academies In 2011, the Global Environment & Society Academy (GESA) was launched, complementing the existing Global Health and Global Development Academies.

School of Medicine in evidence-based medicine. This project is funded by the British Council and will be implemented in the 2011-12 academic year.

GESA The GESA philosophy is based on the principle of being responsive to the changing face of global environmental problems; and the need for mechanisms that enable us to make a significant positive impact to our changing world. This is in line with the academy ethos that acknowledges the need for more responsive collaborative solutions to to-day’s increasingly complex and international problems.

Collaborative activities & dialogue The Global Health Academy held a symposium with the UN World Health Organisation on Tackling the Global Epidemic of Non-Communicable Disease to explore ways in which Scotland can contribute to the world-wide battle to tackle the causes of diseases such as obesity, alcohol and tobacco use, poor diet, physical inactivity and social deprivation. The Academy also delivered a workshop and summer school on One Health approaches to neglected disease control in Laos with representatives of 15 countries.

Academy objectives One of the broad objectives of the Global Academies is to market Postgraduate Taught provision under more exciting globally understood themes. The themes of Health, Development and Environment & Society build on Edinburgh teaching and research strengths and encapsulate global ‘grand challenges’. New global MSc programmes In the Global Health Academy: • MSc One Health • MSc Global Health and NonCommunicable Diseases In the Global Development Academy: • MSc South Asia & International Development • MSc International Development The Global Health Academy is working with Yale to train key faculty at Rwanda

Directors of the Global Academies contributed to high level policy dialogues with national and international bodies including: the UK Department for International Development; World Health Organisation; and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The University also hosted a conference on Emerging and Persistent Infectious Diseases with the US based think-tank Institute on Science for Global Policy. The Journal of Global Health (www. journalofglobalhealth.org) was launched at the World Epidemiology Conference in Edinburgh in August. More than 1,400 copies were distributed to delegates from more than 100 countries and a further

1,100 copies were sent to libraries and international agencies throughout the world. The primary theme was “Biobanking in developing countries”. The aim is to secure a high impact factor and be indexed by Thomson ISI/web of science and Current Contents. The Global Academies worked closely with the Institute for Academic Development to help set up a service to embed work placed internships in MSc level projects. Awards The Global Academies won a significant award from the Distance Education Initiative to develop an inter-disciplinary online MSc in Global Challenges. The Chancellor’s Award for teaching was won by Professor Sue Welburn, Director, Global Health Academy. Mr Jake Broadhurst, International Projects Manager, was awarded the Principal’s Medal for Outstanding Service. The three Global Academy Directors have been designated Assistant Principals commensurate with their strategic leadership role. Student Experience There are now more students and staff from outside the UK/EU at Edinburgh than ever before in its 428-year history. We need to provide an international experience for all students and develop further overseas opportunities.

In her winning essay, Dochka - who graduated this year with a first class degree in politics and economics - talked about the many different aspects of University life that she became involved in since moving to Edinburgh from Bulgaria.

Student support goals We also need to enhance the quality of the student experience across the diverse University campuses, including improved support for international students and their families. International student support services need to be world class and the teaching and research opportunities provided to all students should have an international dimension.

Highlights in 2011 EUSA Global EUSA was awarded with the NUS Higher Education Internationalised Student Union of the Year 2011 award, for its broad and varied work in this area. EUSA Global (www.eusa.ed.ac.uk/global) and the appointment of an Internationalisation Coordinator within EUSA has been a significant success story. International student induction, mentoring, mobility and representation have all improved. To promote global citizenship in the student population, new courses and formats for introducing students to international and regional subjects, as part of a globally relevant curriculum have been explored, e.g. a first year course - Our Changing World – is open to the public and has had 100,000’s of downloads of lecture podcasts. International experience The University of Edinburgh Strategic Plan (2008-12) target was to increase the proportion of our students attending another international institution by 50%. In 2010/11 an increased number of Edinburgh students participated in formally approved student exchange programmes and provisional figures for 2011/12 are indicative of a further improving trend in the current academic year. International Student of the Year Dochka Hristova from Bulgaria was chosen by the University as its International Student of the Year 2011.

Scholarship provision A third Julius Nyerere Masters scholarship was sponsored and used to create a strategic focus for the growing Edinburgh-Tanzania link. In recognition of the strong ties between Edinburgh and Tanzania, the University was invited to send representatives to 50th anniversary celebrations of both the University of Dar es Salaam and Tanzania as an independent state. Julius Nyerere, the first President of Tanzania, studied here from 1949-1952. Following the devastating earthquake and tsunami which struck the east coast of Japan in March 2011, six Edinburgh Global Japan Earthquake 2011 Masters Scholarships were announced for students from the Tohoku, Northern Kanto, and Hokkaido regions undertaking a postgraduate Master’s degree programme. Student support A task force has been convened by Assistant Principal Taught Postgraduate Programmes to look at English language provision for International students. Jointly-awarded PhDs The University of Edinburgh Strategic Plan (2008-12) target was to establish at least five new international partnerships for the award of joint PhDs. This target has now been met. The University has six new agreements in place that include 23 international partner universities. In November, the League of European Research Universities LERU (www.leru. org.uk) Rectors’ Assembly also agreed to a proposal led by the University to establish a new jointly awarded doctoral programme. A full list is available at: www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/ governance-strategic-planning/collaborativeactivity/collaborative-agreements

Staff Experience The role of staff, academic and support, is central to internationalisation and impact is often strongest when strategic and ‘grass roots’ interests of staff coincide. Networking with Colleges, Schools, Support Groups and Human Resources has improved to develop and enhance services to staff (and students) and to implement the strategy at an operational level. The number of international applications and appointments continues to increase. The University continues to subscribe to the international staff internet resource: www.internationalstaff.ac.uk Human Resources enhances services Human Resources has launched new webpages dedicated to Eligibility to Work in the UK. This is a resource to assist recruiters and also prospective or existing international staff. www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/human-resources/ recruitment/eligibility-immigration

Awards like ‘International Student of the Year’ are important because they inspire, motivate and drive students to explore their fullest potential while at university, and they are recognition not only of how much students have taken away from the university, but also how much they have given back in return! Dochka Hristova, International Student of the Year 2011

Human Resources now provides a workshop on ‘Working in a Diverse University’ which is open to all staff and aims to enhance understanding of cultural diversity and ensure an inclusive environment. This workshop is running regularly as part of the staff development programme and is can also be run within particular areas. www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/human-resources/ learning-development/opportunities/courses-workshops/ includes/diverse-community Workshops on Partnering and International Student Support were held. These are cross College/School events that link with other staff/student support areas within the University. Show & Tell We also worked with colleagues in Edinburgh Research & Innovation to host successful ‘Show and Tell’ sessions for staff to highlight research collaborations with specific regions. Global ambassdors The role of staff and students as ambassadors for the University when overseas continues to reap rewards. Professor Howard Cooke (Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine) a Visiting Professor at the University of Science & Technology, China, has also been fulfilling a role as the University of Edinburgh Bioscience Ambassador at USTC. In this capacity he has been promoting collaborative teaching and research in the Life Sciences.

Our International Student Community The University of Edinburgh’s international student community is now richer than ever before with more than 9000 students having made the University their home.
