International Arrival Guide A practical guide during your first week 2012–2013

Welcome! The University of Edinburgh has been welcoming overseas students since its foundation in 1583. At present, out of a total student population of 30,000, we have over 11,000 international students from over 130 different nations studying at the University.

The International Office is centrally located at 33 Buccleuch Place which is in the main University area and we encourage you to come and visit us if you have any issues or concerns that you wish to seek assistance with.

We are justifiably proud of the international nature and diversity of our student population and the contribution that you make to life at the University. It not only provides opportunities for social contacts but also serves to enhance our learning.

Settling into a new environment and adjusting to new situations can be initially daunting but there are a variety of support services on hand at the University that are here to assist with this.

The International Office exists to support international students with their transition to the University and city and to provide guidance and support whilst you are a student here. We look forward to meeting with you in the coming weeks and helping you adjust to your new life here in Edinburgh.

Our main wish is that you enjoy your time at the University of Edinburgh and in Scotland. We sincerely hope that you find, as many have in the past, that Edinburgh becomes your home from home! Best wishes,

Alan Mackay Head of the International Office The University of Edinburgh

Help finding long-term accommodation The University Accommodation Services will be providing an Advice Centre at Pollock Halls of Residence, 18 Holyrood Park Road, during Freshers’ Week. Staff will offer advice to any student who has not yet obtained accommodation in Edinburgh. Property pages from the local newspapers, telephone and internet access will be available (as well as advice) on obtaining accommodation in the private sector.

Newspapers & Magazines • The Scotsman newspaper property pages and ESPC Property Guide come out every Thursday. The Scotsman is available in all newsagents, the ESPC is free and is available in many estate agencies.

Noticeboards Check the university noticeboards (including those in the International Office) for adverts put up by students looking for an extra flatmate. Noticeboards at the entrance to cafes and pubs may also have accommodation advertisements.

Online • www.lettingweb.com • www.studentflatfinder.com • www.edinburghstudentpad.co.uk • www.unite-students.co.uk • www.propertyfinder.com • www.rightmove.co.uk • eusa.ed.ac.uk/forum is a notice board on the Edinburgh University Students’ web site. You could post a message there saying that you are looking for a place. And as the start of the year gets closer current students post their own messages to say they are looking for a flatmate.

• The List is a fortnightly magazine which tells you what’s on in Edinburgh and Glasgow – it also has some adverts at the back for flatmates or rooms for rent.

Opening a bank account It is very useful to open a bank account once you arrive in Edinburgh. You will only be able to open a bank account once you have moved into your accommodation. The information below is an extract from our website about banking. For more information about choosing the best account for you, please go to: www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/ finance/banking

Documents required • Proof of your identity (e.g. passport or EU identity card) • Your visa (if applicable) • Proof of your status as a student (if you are opening a student account) such as your letter of offer or your matriculation card • Proof of your address in Edinburgh (normally this will be a copy of your accommodation lease or a utility bill or a Council Tax statement) For new students, providing a proof of address in the UK is often difficult. To make things easier the University can provide you with a ‘letter of introduction’.

If you are not in University accommodation then you can apply for a letter of introduction online at: www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/ finance/banking Once you apply, the International Office will mail you a letter of introduction to your address in Edinburgh. Students who are not in University accommodation can also present other proof of Edinburgh residence such as a lease from a recognised letting agency. Check with your preferred bank what they will accept. The University of Edinburgh has negotiated for this letter to be accepted by the following banks and branches:

Santander
