Welcome Pack 2011-2012

A practical guide during your first week

The University of Edinburgh is a charitable body, registered in Scotland, with registration number SC005336.

Welcome! The University of Edinburgh has been welcoming overseas students since its foundation in 1583. At present, out of a total student population of 27,000, we have nearly 8,300 international students from over 145 different nations studying at the University. We are justifiably proud of the international nature and diversity of our student population and the contribution that you make to life at the University. It not only provides opportunities for social contacts but also serves to enhance our learning. The International Office exists to support international students with their transition to the University and city and to provide guidance and support whilst you are a student here.

We look forward to meeting with you in the coming weeks and helping you adjust to your new life here in Edinburgh.

in Scotland. We sincerely hope that you find, as many have in the past, that Edinburgh becomes your home from home!

The International Office is centrally located at 57 George Square which is in the main University area and we encourage you to come and visit us if you have any issues or concerns that you wish to seek assistance with.

Best wishes,

Settling into a new environment and adjusting to new situations can be initially daunting but there are a variety of support services on hand at the University that are here to assist with this.

Your arrival in Edinburgh Calling your family

Baggage (luggage) reclaim

It’s important to let your family know that you have arrived safe and well. There are public payphones located in the Arrivals Hall at Edinburgh Airport. You will also be able to call home from the Welcome Centre, which is open from 10 – 16 September. See page 6 for details. If you need to purchase a mobile phone, please refer to our shopping section on page 4.

In the exceptional case of your luggage being lost, the first thing you must do is report your lost bags to the Lost Baggage desk at the airport. Seek assistance from a member of the airport staff or the Welcome Team for more information. If your luggage is delayed, you will need to provide a telephone number and address in the UK to deliver your items.

If you need to purchase essential clothing and toiletries while your luggage is delivered, please read the information about shops on page 4.

Some airlines offer reimbursement on presenting original receipts for emergency purchases.

For new students providing a proof of address in the UK is often difficult. To make things easier the University can provide you with a ‘letter of introduction’ to the following banks and branches. Please note that this letter may not be accepted at branches or banks not listed here. How to request a Letter of Introduction (Bank letter)

Information about how to do this is available from Accommodation Services. If you are not in University accommodation then you can apply for a letter of introduction online at: www.ed.ac.uk/staff-students/students/ new-students/money/banking

Once you apply, the International Office will mail you a letter of introduction or bank letter to your address in Edinburgh. Students who are not in university accommodation can also present other proof of Edinburgh residence such as a lease from a recognised letting agency. Check with your preferred bank what they will accept. When you open a bank account, ask for monthly statements to be sent to you. Please keep these in case you need them for a visa extension. Remember to inform the bank if your address changes.

If you are in University accommodation, you will be able to download and print off a copy of the bank letter as soon as you take up residence.

The programme consists of morning and afternoon sessions held in Appleton Tower, Teviot and Potterrow. First sessions start at 10.30am in Appleton Tower. The university is running a half day programme for all new international students who are starting their Taught Masters programmes. The orientation provides an opportunity for you to meet other students, to exchange ideas and to ask questions. Registration is necessary for this event: www.ed.ac.uk/staff-students/students/ new-students/events/int-student/studyorientation-day

We hope that by participating you will: • gain a broad overview of teaching and learning environments at Edinburgh and expectations of Masters students • consider how you can make the most of your Masters’ experiences and find out about the support available. This is a very popular event which students find informative and enjoyable – a good way to meet other students and find out about the university and the academic environment.
