Edinburgh International Film Festival 2011
FROM THE DIRECTOR In 2011, in its 65th year, the Edinburgh International Film Festival is not applying for senior citizenship. Rather, it has grasped both the opportunity and necessity to have a long look in the mirror. It is thrusting its chin out, boldly reinventing and reinvigorating itself, taking the first long strides into its future. There are now over 2,000 film festivals globally, and we’re neither able nor willing to compete with the red carpets and star wattage of Berlin, Cannes, Toronto and Venice. We are paying fresh mind to the historic and cultural reputation of our glorious home town. We want to help shout ‘Edinburgh’ even louder to the world. Glorious Edinburgh - the City of Enlightenment; Britain’s crucible of scientific innovation, literature, and modern economics; home to one of the great world universities (and more computer scientists per head of capita than any British city); the guardian of an important and historic military tradition, in a country that has engaged in conflict continuously for over two centuries. Our curation, programming and invitations are informed and inspired by these riches. In the following pages you will see all manner of innovations, and you can read more about them opposite. At EIFF’s core is the 60+ feature film programme, proudly offered to the passionate, loyal, local die hard fans of the ‘Edinburgh’ film - those which thrill and delight, challenge perceptions of what cinema can do, are shown with filmmakers in attendance in unique, exciting presentations, and those which may never see a UK cinema screen again.
New British work leads the way - we’re thrilled to have the World Premiere of David Hare’s first directing outing in 20 years Page Eight, featuring Bill Nighy, Rachel Weisz, Michael Gambon and Judy Davis. We’re pleased to be hosting the reunification of David MacKenzie and Ewan McGregor in the new thriller Perfect Sense. Young rising star Felicity Jones (Bill Nighy’s daughter in Page Eight) also appears alongside Jessica Brown-Findlay in the elegant coming of age comedy drama Albatross. A diverse range of international cinema is playing, and amongst many highlights, I commend to you the highly anticipated Troll Hunter, and the slightly deranged The Last Circus, which won director Alex de la Iglesia a Silver Lion for Best Director in Venice last year. I am proud the Festival is opening with John McDonagh’s darkly funny Irish caper The Guard, starring Brendon Gleeson and Don Cheadle. Documentaries make up a third of the programme, including James Marsh’s Project Nim and Danfung Dennis’s astounding Sundance winner Hell and Back Again. Ten of these are presented as Joint UK Premieres with the Sheffield Doc/Fest - a major new collaboration. A calm, poetic exploration of climate change explored through the eyes of a boat load of major artists - Laurie Anderson, Jarvis Cocker, KT Tunstall, Marcus Brigstocke and Ryuichi Sakamoto to name a few - is the beautiful, joyous Burning Ice. I strongly urge you to clear as much time from your diaries in the last two weeks of June - there’s plenty for everyone in the following pages. James Mullighan Beauty in things exists in the mind which contemplates them. David Hume

All That Heaven Allows
EIFF 65 - ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS The Festival has been blessed by the participation of Mark Cousins,Tilda Swinton and Lynda Myles. In December and January, they donated their time and passion as artistic advisors, delivering in February a creative blueprint: a cornucopia of ideas, films, people, happenings, poesy and interruptions. The programme is now stuffed and seasoned with contributions from them and their guest curators including Gus Van Sant, Alan Warner, Markus Meissen, Sara Driver and Jim Jarmusch, Mike Skinner, Apichatpong Weerasethakul... It has been a humbling, inspiring experience having these incredible names in my inbox. Take Gus Van Sant, for example. He professed a love for the cinema of Derek Jarman, and so on page 21 you’ll see, at the foot of the entry for Blue, ‘The Films of Derek Jarman at EIFF 2011 have been programmed by our guest curator, Gus Van Sant.’ Here’s another example: architect and writer Markus Meissen wants to explore spatial politics, and so we’ve set aside 24 hours for him at Inspace. I believe you’ll have a delightful time browsing the programme, unearthing the truffles of our guest curators’ contributions. Alongside the feature films in the programme is a huge selection of film-related events - conversations, debates, experiments, parties and gigs. We’ve moved the headquarters of the Festival to Festivalhouse@Teviot a ‘castle in the city’, the iconic University of Edinburgh Student Union Building - to accommodate these. We are throwing 63 of them open to the public, many of them for free - in effect, a pop up film school. Rather than the red carpets and galas of yore, you’ll find film fans rubbing shoulders with the makers of the films they’ve just seen, in the bars of the Filmhouse and Festivahouse@Teviot.
There are many more new initiatives. Here’s a tease: • Project: New Cinephilia is a unique gathering of diverse film critics - established and aspirant - igniting a conversation and stramash on the current film writing landscape; • Sound Tracks A joyous jamboree of all things music on film, with training, seminars, screenings, live demonstrations, gigs and parties; • Reel Science A programme of short and feature film, new and classic, with Q&As from leading UK scientists, supported by the Wellcome Trust; think the Terminator, at the EIFF, with AI and robotics experts on stage afterwards; • The Nokia Shorts Weekender Over 20 screenings, masterclasses, retrospectives, parties … instantly Scotland’s biggest celebration of short filmmaking; and • Conflict | reportage For these for these fascinating, rapidly evolving geopolitical times, a comprehensive, thoughtful exploration of modern conflict reportage, in proud partnership with the Frontline Club and UK National Armed Forces Day; There’s so much more, as you’ll discover leafing through these pages, One more in particular, though: noting the writing on the traditional distribution wall, and determined to offer a platform where new paradigms for filmmakers can be explored, we host the agitants and interruptors, the vanguards of the future: Basetrack, the Bureau, ConditionOne, DazedTV, Dogwoof, Distrify, the Frontline Club, IMDB, MUBI, New Media Scotland, Protein, Rich Pickings, Shooting People, subtlemob.com, ted.com, VICE and Vimeo. It has been an exhilarating (if short) four months putting this big, bold, bolshi, brave new programme together. I’m very proud of it and the team which has supported me, and look forward very much to welcoming you to our great city, and Festival.

opening night THE GUARD
OPENING NIGHT UK PREMIERE
The Guard John Michael McDonagh/Ireland/UK/2011/96 min Cast: Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, David Wilmot, Dominique McElligot WED 15 JUNE 21:45 FESTIVAL THEATRE - MAIN AUDITORIUM PRICE: £15.00 (£9.50 CONC) Sgt. Gerry Boyle is an undistinguished officer of the Galway Garda. But only because he wants it that way … Confrontational, vulgar, hooker-frequenting, heavy-drinking, contraband pill-popping Sgt. Gerry Boyle could be said to not take his job very seriously. Onto his country beat comes polar opposite FBI Agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle), on the trail of some unlikely international drug dealers on the West Coast of Ireland. Content, at first, to ridicule (hilariously) the straight-laced G-Man, our ‘hero’ finds himself reluctantly drawn into the action, and an improbable alliance, of a very particular sort, is born.
In Bruges would be the obvious comparison here (both films are Irish, star Brendan Gleeson, were brilliantly written and directed by a member of the McDonagh family, and share a delicious, caustic wit as black as Guinness) but this fish-out-of-water/odd couple/cop comedy/buddy movie is much more besides: it’s also a clever, original character study with a downright melancholy sweetness about it that’s decidedly not present in the earlier film. All that said, this is Gleeson’s film. He is so good, it is almost like it was written for him.

THU 23 JUNE 18:30 GEORGE SQ THEATRE PRICE: £6.00 (£5.00 CONCS) Place, memory and the physicality of experiences are explored through the complex web of the interpersonal relationships that gather around us. Moving between visceral and ethereal, this collection of shorts radiates a sense of melancholy whilst engaging with tangible, powerful issues. They offer us a peephole into stories recounting the hazy memories of lost loved ones, hallucinatory road trips, the yearning for belonging and dreams of impossible romance.
Exquisitely nuanced coming of age comedy drama, with strong central performances from two fast rising British actresses. Niall MacCormick’s well-pitched and beautifully written film about frustrated author Jonathan (Koch) and the incendiary effect on his family of the arrival of the ebullilent Emilia (Brown-Findlay), herself a would-be writer. Emilia first befriends and emancipates the bookish daughter Beth (Jones), alarms her career frustrated mother (Ormond), before bewitching Jonathan himself. The script and the journey of Emilia will inspire any young writer, and a heavy hitting supporting cast make this one of the important British films of the year.
A Douglas Sirk classic of love crossing the divide. After the recent death of her rich, wellrespected husband, Cary Scott crushingly falls for her earthy, young gardener. They fall deeper in love and decide to marry despite the disdain of Cary’s high society. Amidst increasing gossip and protests against their union from the community and Cary’s teenage children, they struggle to remain true to themselves and one another until ultimately forced to choose between their relationship and her children. This screening is to honour the work of EIFF 2011's artistic advisors.

SAT 18 JUNE 13:00 FILMHOUSE 3 PRICE: £6.00 (£5.00 CONC) EIFF 2011 guest curator Béla Tarr described Hungarian filmmaker Gábor Bódy as 'one of the highest mountains in Hungarian film history’, this is the postmodern filmmaker at his most experimental. Collaged texts excerpted from authentic diaries, a text by Karl Marx, poems by Walt Whitman, and Ambrose Bierce’s short story combine in a skeletal narrative about the lives of three 1848 Revolution veterans, serving as land surveyors during the American Civil War. A poetic experiment in form, Bódy uses his own method of ‘light editing’ in order to make it resemble a wrecked silent film from the late 19th century. This film was programmed for EIFF 2011 by guest curator Béla Tarr.
SAT 25 JUNE 15:00 FILMHOUSE 1 SUN 26 JUNE 19:00 FILMHOUSE 2 PRICE: £9.00 (£7.50 CONC) Young love has never been so menacing. Co-director Jean Marc Barr is probably better known for his acting work in films such as The Big Blue and his frequent appearances for director Lars Von Trier. In his fifth film in the director's chair, he focusses on young lovers Chris and Aurora whose relationship takes a bizarre twist after one of them is found to have a dark and terrible secret. This fascinating and atmospheric drama is blessed by two excellent central performances.
Shorts programme/60 min SAT 25 JUNE 20:00 GEORGE SQ THEATRE PRICE: £6.00 (£5.00 CONC) A selection of the finest short films of Winnipeg auteur Guy Maddin, a connoisseur and champion of the format, and one of contemporary cinema’s most staggeringly original and iconoclastic voices. Through an always entertaining and combustive fusion of signature elements, Maddin elegantly steamrolls through prescribed norms and values, in order to bring into sharp focus the elemental angst and absurdity of human existence; all the while creating impeccably beautiful visual images. Join us to revel in Maddin's anarchic playpen, where the surreal reigns supreme.

First time director Alix Delaporte displays real skill in this depiction of unconventional love set against the backdrop of a small fishing village in Normandy. SAT 25 JUNE 17:45 FILMHOUSE 3 PRICE: £6.00 (£5.00 CONC) Dame Judi Dench narrates and John Balance of Coil provides the score for this beautiful, lyrical homage to homosexual love. An unseen woman recites Shakespeare's sonnets as a man wordlessly meanders through a foggy, surreal landscape. Stunning, multi-layered imagery and a hauntingly ethereal soundtrack add a gentle, romantic and hypnotic tone. The films of Derek Jarman at EIFF 2011 have been programmed by our guest curator, Gus Van Sant.
SUN 19 JUNE 20:00 CAMEO 1 PRICE: £9.00 (£7.50 CONC) Based on a book by Leslie Schwartz, Gaby Dellal directs this indie drama which deals with a momentary lapse of judgment that has wider repercussions for a close knit community. Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey) and Kate Walsh (Private Practice) star. A small town community is thrown into emotional disarray and divided opinion, when a young three year old is found frozen to death, after wandering off from what his father believed had been a locked and secured truck.
THU 23 JUNE 20:20 GEORGE SQ THEATRE PRICE: £6.00 (£5.00 CONC) Animation is certainly diverse. Renowned for being able to tell a good yarn, it is also capable of bringing to the screen a visual smorgasbord, creating rhythm and engaging the audience through experimentation with materials, objects and time. This presentation of short films from around the globe explores some of those less well traversed extremes, with some inspiring animation techniques therein. Mingling amongst this variety of narratives, with a rich tapestry of ideas, are some purely visual spectacles.

FRI 24 JUNE 18:00 GEORGE SQ THEATRE PRICE: £6.00 (£5.00 CONC)
For many filmmakers, animation provides a chance to fulfil the desire to become an actor without having to stand up personally in front of a live audience.
Reality documented through animation.
These shorts use performance to narrate stories concerned with the human condition, from navigating interpersonal skills to building a sense of community. This international selection brings the uncontrollable grief of a little girl, the events of one day of the week, school crushes, road rage, family relationships, dysfunctional neighbours and the murderous impulse.
Animated Realitites is a a two-day conference exploring the increasingly popular form of animated documentary, in association with Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Edinburgh’s Animating Realities. From the thoughts of a child of a holocaust survivor; a tender memoir of the death of a parent; an overwhelming account of Argentinian grandmothers searching for their lost grandchildren, to the delightful memory of a mother’s fur coat, a demonstration of American architecture and an insight into Arabic culture, we present seven short films that use the genre brilliantly to varying degrees and effect.

Year 2029 and mankind's victory against a deadly computer system called Skynet is down to the actions of one man: John Connor, the leader of the Human Resistance. In an attempt to quash the resistance, Skynet deploys an indestructible cyborg in human form, the Terminator, through time to kill Sarah Connor, before she can give birth to her son John. Using one of the most iconic uses of Artificial Intelligence in film as a starting point, EIFF and the Edinburgh School of Informatics explore in a lively discussion whether rational thought is mechanically possible.

Animated Mythologies Shorts programme/74 min WED 22 JUNE 17:45 GEORGE SQ THEATRE PRICE: £6.00 (£5.00 CONC) This collection of international animated films revels in tropes of fairytale, fable and mythology to tell imaginative tales. Animation is a brilliant medium for encapsulating parables and legends in short form. This programme features a fisherman capturing matter itself, an impatient groom lost in the desert, a world where gravity is a law unto itself, an invention that goes awry, odd natural histories, a malevolent spirit in the woods, and the memory of a vanished settlement.

A kaleidoscopic portrait of the making of a legend.
“All I want to do, ever, is just play chess.” – Bobby Fischer.
Through intimate scenes shot on a sony video camera in 1970s Jamaica filmmaker Esther Anderson artfully constructed the union between Reggae and Rasta that launched the international career and renowned image of Bob Marley and The Wailers. Revisiting that formative time she reveals to what degree her original vision set in motion the radical change of perception and consciousness both musically and socially around the world.
Liz Garbus’ fascinating documentary charts the turbulent life – from a childhood of isolation and neglect to young chess prodigy, world champion and subsequent madness and disgrace – of one of chess’s undisputed masters. The World Championship of 1972, Fischer vs Spassky, took on literally Cold War significance as a nation pinned its hopes on Fischer as the man to end Soviet dominance. Garbus has mined, to brilliant effect, the wealth of astounding archive footage from this the Golden Age of the game.

PREMIERE TYPE
A small community living on the fringes of the lost American Dream. Once a thriving resort, Bombay Beach is now little more than a shanty ghost town in the poorest county of California. Home to troubled young soul Benny, aspiring footballer Ceejay taking refuge from LA gang culture and Red, a whisky and cigarettes soaked ex oil field worker, this is a beautifully ethereal portrait of a forgotten town brought back to life through choreographed sequences and music composed for the film by Zach Condon of band Beirut.
Following the lives of four patients with brain disorders, director Nadav Harel examines the application of medical technology such as Electrocondusive Therapy and Deep Brain Stimulation that treats the mind simply as a series of signals in the brain. The film will be followed by in depth discussion around our understanding of how electric manipulation of our minds has progressed so far, and where it might be going soon.

Can just three minutes with a stranger change the course of your life, forever?
15 years after the events of the first film, Lt.Col. Roberto Nascimento (Wagner Moura), negotiates his way upwards through the elite squad ranks, and into the vast web of corruption that lies behind the law.
In Scotland’s answer to Love Actually, seven very different singletons are searching for love in the cosmopolitan city of Glasgow. Their paths cross at Fast Romance, a speed dating night full of hopeless romantics and potential weirdos. Fate intervenes and sets off a chain of events that puts our protagonists’ lives into a spin with explosive and surprising consequences.
Psychosexual thriller, starring Jane Asher, showing the darker side to swinging London. Shy, awkward 15 year-old Mike has just started work at a public bathhouse and when not escaping from the clutches of over-sexed middle-aged women he lusts after fellow employee Susan. A calculating temptress, his obsession with her leads Mike on a downward spiral into the sordid world of porno theaters, swingers clubs, and the over consumption of hot dogs. This film was programmed by Alan Warner, one of EIFF 2011’s guest curators.
Taking his characters on an even deeper, more dramatic journey, director Jose Padilha discards his original formula, and delivers a slick, intelligent sequel that easily rivals the iconic first instalment.

Hell and Back Again Danfung Dennis/USA,UK,Afghanistan/ 2010/88 min SUN 26 JUNE 16:00 VENUE TBC PRICE: £9.00 (£7.50 CONC) “Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.” Friedrich Nietzsche. This is a war documentary, the likes of which you’ve never seen; important and devastating, it ushers in a new multisensorial language of conflict reportage. How do you lead men into battle? How to cope when normal life is a more frightening prospect than white hot contact? This 2011 double Sundance winner (Cinematography and Grand Jury prizes) and, incredibly, debut feature from Danfung Dennis posits potent and humane answers, in a fashion unlike few previous Afghanistan essays.
Dennis was embedded with US Marines Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, as they launched a major assault on Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan. We follow Sergeant Nathan Harris, as he leads his men in dreadful contact, and as they reach out to despairing, displaced villagers. When Harris is horribly injured, he returns home to his wife, and becomes addicted to medication. This is a portrait of a man battling pain, addiction, dreadful memories, the loss of his self, and those who must pick up the pieces, and suffer the repercussions. The film is extraordinary on several levels. Dennis built for himself a flexible, fully portable, wearable camera and sound rig, allowing him to keep pace with the fast moving troops, maintaining position at the centre of some terrifying action; the battle scenes are alarming and unsettlingly
exciting, with the values of an expensive Hollywood reconstruction. Dennis brings a photographer’s subtle framing and composition to each shot (he won a BayeuxCalvados Award for War Correspondents); it’s a painterly, beautiful film. Danfung Dennis is attending the Festival and, with fellow war correspondents Balazs Gardi, Teru Kuwayama and Inigo Gilmore, is presenting an unmissable series of events exploring modern conflict reportage, in association with the Frontline Club. Hell and Back Again is proudly presented as part of the cultural programme of UK National Armed Forces Day, and a special Veterans’ Screening will take place on Sunday 26 June. The director is also Jack – a character he knows well, having played it many times on stage in Bob Glaudini’s play – an overweight, shy, reggae-loving, New York chauffeur looking for love, aided in his quest by his married best buddy Clyde, who sees a possibility for Jack with one of his wife’s colleagues, the equally inclinedto-be-reticent Connie. Beautifully realised characters played by a flawless cast, in a film that never quite lets you predict where it is going to go next.
Returning from a study trip to Manchester, Gabriel has a new friend and a secret he doesn’t want to share, even with his close group of friends. Summer stretches ahead of him, filled with broken hearts, house parties and ill-advised hair experiments. Meanwhile his friends have family and money troubles of their own and depend on reliable Gabriel for support. Can he work out who and what he wants?

1937. A bedraggled circus clown fights his way through hordes of vicious rebels with a machete. 1973. His son, also a circus clown, finds himself embroiled in an emotional tug of war that gradually spirals into madness. Director Álex de la Iglesia’s dark, dazzling parable once more proves his unique genius; his Silver Lion award for Best Director in Venice last year was well deserved. Horrific, hilarious: this is one of the most compelling and memorable cult films of the year.
Jarman’s impassioned comment on life in Thatcher’s Britain. Apocalyptic and nostalgic this abstract montage of home movies and distorted imagery set against a perplexing soundtrack of discordant sounds and ambient noise is seen as Jarman’s most politically aware work. Awkward coat-hanger limbs, frizzy hair and a fondness for 1930s music loudly announce 17 year-old Tobe’s dorkdom. No surprise that he’s a virgin. But dork or not, Tobe’s still a teenage boy and when his favourite X-rated actress, star of such 70s hits as Saturday Night Beaver, schedules a comeback appearance live on stage, nothing will keep him away. Even a few hundred miles and their 32 year age-gap.
Catherine Martin's first new feature since the gorgeous Dans Les Villes (EIFF 2007) is a beautifully crafted, thoroughly serious study of parental grief. Martin's elegiac long-take style and relentlessly elegant mise-en-scene develop a striking backdrop for the compelling central performance. The interplay between powerful performances given full room to breathe, and masterful technique unfolding under tightly focused direction, make this a thoroughly mesmerising piece of cinema. Mixing verité footage of villagers with scenes played by non-professional actors, the film offers a vivid portrait of Thailand's countryside through the eyes of its disenfranchised lower classes, refashioning conventional notions of film narrative. Transylvania transported into the new world.
Music works in miraculous ways.
Marginalised by the rise of industrial food products, wary of looming competition, and tempted by the lure of high salaries, teenage Albin Creta and his family of shepherds struggle to adapt to the culture of the ‘new world’. Tracking their day to day routine for a year, director Dieter Auner identifies their efforts to hold on to traditions that are gradually being replaced by modern values, in this warm, sensitive exploration of the implications of EU membership.
Neurologist Dr Oliver Sacks has made the study of the human brain his life's work. His book Musicophila: Tales of Music and the Brain, explores people dealing with extraordinary neurological conditions and how music works in their minds in strange and surprising ways. Alan Yentob talks to the devoted physician about the power music has on the human brain and meets some of his remarkable case studies. Curated in association with the Neuroscience and Music IV Conference the film will be followed by a discussion led by Dr Katie Overy (Institute for Music in Human and Social Development) and Nigel Osborne (Reid Professor of Music, University of Edinburgh).

This eclectic collection of highly innovative and original works incorporates a wide array of themes and forms brought together by an overriding concern with staging and setting, and with the unravelling of enigmatic spaces, elusive moods and timelessness. Delving into worlds both familiar and strange, these films explore and uncover gender relations, sexual politics, social inequalities and modern melancholy. Stop-motion photography and Melies-inspired magic meets found pornography and a Bergman remake.

It is easy to see the influence of this work on Tarr: in the brooding exploration of violence, mental and physical; the uneasy cohabitation of man and his environment; and a clipped, austere aesthetic. Surreal and hallucinogenically beautiful, Jancsó’s work serves as an emphatic cry for freedom of will, politically and personally, and transcends time and remains eminently relevant to a contemporary audience. Programmed by Béla Tarr, one of EIFF 2011’s guest curators

If you are unfamiliar with Maddin’s work, rush to see this blackly funny, sumptuousyet-lo-fi quasi-musical on the big screen. It centres around a vampy, career-invigorating turn from the lustrous Isabella Rosselini, as the legless Lady Port-Huntley, running a contest to find the eponymous music, to boost sales of her company’s beer, just before Prohibition is lifted. Look for Guy Maddin’s shorts on Saturday 25 June.

High Fidelity with a Northern accent.
SUN 26 JUNE 13:00 FILMHOUSE 3 PRICE: £6.00 (£5.00 CONC) Skolimowski’s acclaimed, garlanded British adaptation of a Robert Graves’ short story, is his most unabashedly surreal work. The mysterious Crosseley Alan Bates insinuates himself into the quiet Devonshire lives of the young hospitable Fieldings (Susannah York and John Hurt), in this 1978 Cannes Grand Prix du Jury winner, only the second feature produced by legendary Brit Jeremy Thomas. Crossley’s claim of having learned from an aboriginal shaman a ‘terror shout’ that can kill instantly intrigues Anthony Fielding, an experimental composer. This film was programmed by Alan Warner, one of EIFF 2011’s guest curators.

When college buddies Eddie Guerriero and Mitch Deprey moved into their first San Francisco apartment and they heard their new neighbours arguing, they did what anyone would do – they surreptitiously recorded them! The arguments were so abusive, horrendous, hilarious and profane, the tapes they made and distributed amongst friends went viral and took on a life of their own. Matthew Bate’s funny and deceptively astute documentary explores some big issues around privacy, voyeurism, copyright and exploitation.

UK horror on a military base. The year is 2002 and the place is Stormhouse, a secret underground military bunker where a ghostly, supernatural entity has been imprisoned. ‘Ghost whisperer’ and government agent Hayley Sands is sent to investigate the entity, but her arrival triggers a series of horrific events culminating in an intensely chilling and utterly brutal denouement. This UK independent horror delivers heart-pounding tension and nerve-shredding shocks in equal measure.

There are other ways to create a monster.
Ever wondered what it would be like to switch sex? Laure, 10, does.
No stranger to EIFF, Kornél Mundruczó (Pleasant Days EIFF 2002, Johanna EIFF 2005) returns with his ‘reimagining’ of (the second half of) Mary Shelley’s famous novel. His ‘monster’, though, is a boy: an orphan, recently arrived in a wintry, contemporary Budapest in search of those who ‘created’ him. Rejected anew, and at large in a world of emotions he cannot begin to comprehend, he lashes out. This is a bold, visually striking (both in its cinematography and locations), dark and chilling film.
When Laure arrives at her new neighbourhood in the outskirts of Paris, she ventures outside to meet the local kids. Mistaken for a boy by potential new best friend Lisa, she decides, on the spur of the moment, to give her name as Mikaël. Second-time director Celine Sciamma’s striking debut, Water Lilies, marked her as a name to watch, and she doesn’t disappoint with another incisive, insightful, though more intimate drama of burgeoning female sexuality.

Unwisely, as it happens, for Hans works for the top secret Troll Security Service, and a rogue Ringlefinch is on the loose. André Ovredal’s supremely effective, tense, brilliantly rendered and realised, thrill-ride mock doc (a la Blair Witch) has already been a massive hit at home, and deservedly so.
When Mads, a frustrated and doubt-filled screenwriter in his early thirties suddenly becomes aware of his own mortality, he leaves both his job and his long-term relationship to seek out the satisfying life he always dreamed of. Errors of judgement and the shattering of idealised memories make his quest as amusing as it is difficult.

However, as their business expands, they are drawn deeper and deeper into the dark side of the game, right at the hedonistic peak of the international rave scene. 70 min THU 23 JUNE 15:00 FESTIVALHOUSE@TEVIOT - DEBATING HALL PRICE: £10.00 (£8.50 CONC) One of the most innovative independent record labels and publishing houses gets its teeth stuck into soundtracks, and gives them a good shake. Responsible for artists such as The Kills, Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand, join Domino’s Head of Synchronisation, Lynden Campbell, as she edits Domino music to film whilst talking through the pitch process from the perspective of an inhouse synchronisation team. If you have 60 seconds of film that you would like to see edited to Domino music at this event submit a quicktime file to synch@dominorecordco.com by 22nd June.
Alongside Music Supervisor Vicki Williams and musician Steve Mason (formerly of King Biscuit Time, Black Affair and The Beta Band), Lynden will then invite a frank discussion about what music rights holders and film producers demand from music uses in film, commercials, games and TV. This exciting collaboration, new to EIFF 2011, began as an animated discussion between Domino and the EIFF programming team about the lack of opportunity for musicians and filmmakers to network, and the keen awareness of musicians that film is a valid and creative platform for their work. In fact, this electrifying conversation kick-started the Sound Track extravaganza you see on the pages today.
Soundtracks are a filmmaking statement, from Nino Rota’s scores to Fellini and Coppola, the always anticipated new Bond track to the inimitable Cohen Brothers sound. With the growing prevalence of popular musicians such as Nick Cave, Jonny Greenwood and this year’s Oscar® winner Trent Rezner of Nine Inch Nails, for his score to The Social Network, eagerly lending their talent to moving image, now is the time to put a spotlight on nurturing this relationship.

Can film help homeless people build new lives? Open Cinema and Streetwise Opera are two leading organisations using film to develop the talents and opportunities of homeless and vulnerable people. Streetwise Opera’s Matt Peacock will present a selection of films from their recentlytoured series Fables, which brought together professional composers and filmmakers with 150 participants who have experienced homelessness. Open Cinema’s Christoph Warrack will present four short films made by its members with the assistance of accomplished filmmakers, including BAFTAwinner Martina Amati.
In association with EIFF, the music download portal Ten Tracks invites filmmakers to visually interpret ten of their best tracks. Come take a look at the winning films, selected by the creators of the music, with live accompaniment by each of the artists. To submit your film for this event go to TenTracks.co.uk

Award winning filmmaker Saam Farahmand has lent his highly imaginative eye to a host of musicians including the Klaxons, New Young Pony Club, These New Puritans, Simian Mobile Disco, Janet Jackson and Cheryl Cole. Join Vimeo’s Jeremy Boxer in watching and discussing some of his most groundbreaking videos from the last 5 years.
Are viral videos created by design or by chance? A conversation between film curator Jeremy Boxer (Vimeo Creative Director, Film+Video) and filmmaker Jason Wishnow (Creator of TEDTalks, TED.com). Wishnow and Boxer will discuss lessons all filmmakers can learn from viral videos, proven techniques of viral filmmaking, and how to encourage a video to go viral. They will share several short clips and discuss different reasons why they became so sharable and memorable.
Bella Freud and filmmaker Gerry Fox discuss the inspiration behind their film ‘Hopes & Dreams’, portraits of refugee children of Palestine. Bella Freud, of the Hoping Foundation (children's charity for Palestinian refugee children) travelled to Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon with award-winning filmmaker, Gerry Fox. They filmed a series of portraits of Palestinian refugee children talking about their aspirations as they prepare to leave school. The resulting film shows that despite being scattered across borders by decades of statelessness and exile, Palestinian students share a common history and identity. Edinburgh International Film Festival 2011
marketing society and eiff In 2010 the Edinburgh International Film Festival merged with the Filmhouse, two previously separately run businesses which now come under the umbrella organisation of the Centre for the Moving Image (CMI). The ambition of this new organisation is to celebrate, educate, inform, lead, inspire and activate across the space of film and moving image. Our mission is to further establish Scotland as a leader in celebrating film and the moving image, inspiring and educating audiences, talent and businesses and leading the way in exploring and owning the new – new ways of creating stories, telling stories and sharing stories for both industry and the public. We are delighted to be working with the Marketing Society to present Ogilvy Day. David Ogilvy was born on 23 June 1911, the same day of the year his father and grandfather were born. Legend has it David’s father challenged him to also try for a son on this day – one of the many stories that surround
him. Now, 100 years on, The Marketing Society is celebrating his life and legacy. Ogilvy was very proud of his Scottish roots and education. He claimed it was this heritage that developed his passion for marketing effectiveness, as well as the craft of creative execution. He was also a great social animal, story teller and serial networker – wearing his kilt to cocktail parties ensured (like his advertising) that he stood out from the crowd. Ogilvy's golden era of advertising has recently been brought to life in the hit TV series – Mad Men. On 23 June 2011, as part of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, The Marketing Society is planning three events that reflect Ogilvy’s passions. For full details of these events, please visit: www.marketingsociety.org.uk/ogilvyday To make a booking, please contact EIFF Box Office or the Marketing Society directly on: 020 8973 1360 or email: bookings@marketingsociety.co.uk
