EDITION Edition is a fine art photography magazine from students at Northern Centre of Photography, University of Sunderland, Photography, Video and Digital Imaging BA (Hons). This magazine acts as a platform for our students to get their work out to a wider audience. In this issue we showcase a range of studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; work across all three years working in a variety of different mediums; ranging from traditional chemical and digital through to alternative processes. Our intention is for Edition to be a biannual publication coinciding with end of semesters, meaning our next issue will be available January 2014. Enjoy! Edition editorial team

Inside Beechcroft This work is essentially inspired by the idea of the family photograph, in what it means, and its relevance in times of discord and transformation. Examined is the traces of a life lived, in what we leave behind and the natural ebb and wane of life itself. The family home is explored, abandoned and left to decay. It shows the marks of family life visually through the possessions and environment left and crucially the signs of old age, dementia and the significance of raising a handicapped child. This can be seen through telltale signifiers such as the complete lack of modernisation and somewhat dilapidated nature of the contents.

Fashion Photography For this body of work I have focused upon the cliches of photography within the fashion business and how a lot of the images within this particular genre of photography often lack truths. This is due to the fact that both the men and women who model in fashion images, almost always have to put on some kind of front whilst being photographed.

Silent Reflection The past seven years have been intermittently fraught with death and sadness. The loss of all three of my Grandparents over such a short period of time has rocked our family, almost as though a link in the chain has been removed. Reflection on the past is bittersweet, but a necessary part of life. Time has moved on, but there will always be a part of me that never will.

The Altarpiece of the Mystic Laptop Society has changed a lot since the days of the Renaissance when people were depicted in grand paintings, and scenes of worship and holy figures were common. People no longer have the same values and ideals as they did back then and religion seems to have fallen by the wayside in place of modern technology. It seems to be what todays society holds most dear.

Affectation The piece is based around the idea of metaphorical masks and how most people use masks within everyday life to fit in to society or to generally get through the day. Each image represents the ‘mask’ that the model uses. The clown represents the subject’s battle with depression whilst having to maintain the life of a family man. The doll represents the way in which the model hides her emotions and tends to ‘cover up the cracks’ in her life or in other words pretending to be fine when she’s not. The army camouflage image represents the subject’s need to fit in with certain groups of people and how he will change his personality and interests to do this.

Second Nature. With the global forests being seen as the earths lungs, large

scale deforestation could be seen as the worlds cancer, slowly eating away at the earths vital core. With the well documented issues surrounding the Amazon rainforest and the African rainforest being given the green light for deforestation to begin, the world is well and truly facing a hard battle for survival. Second nature explores the area between the Forest and the bleakness of where life once was, as well as mans loss of imagination and attitude towards nature.

In Darkness there is Light At some time in our lives we all have to deal with the emotions of losing a loved one and at times these emotions become so strong that we need an escape. We search for these calm and open landscapes in which we are able to ground our thoughts and process our loss. Such strong life changing events can be so overwhelming that we feel strong and yet incredibly fragile all at the same time. (The triptych is printed onto large pieces of glass that are then precariously suspended for viewing)

No Place Like Home

Imagine the stillness, just three miles away from the city centre. Imagine emptiness with only two ways in and two ways out. Imagine seventy years old silence walking hand in hand with burglary, crimes of violence and damage, hiding from the unemployment statistics. Imagine yourself being born in silence you had to accept. Imagine yourself, thinking that your children deserve a better life, but you are unable to scream. Imagine your home.

Twelve Photographers These 4 images are part of a series consisting of 12 images, which gives the model control of the positioning of themselves and the shutter release. My aim was to move the position of photographers to in-front of the camera rather than behind, then questioning how they act on the other side. Though you can question if it is really how they want to be seen as they took 5 images but I only used one in the edit.

Rejected Beauty

Abandoned and lost objects lay amogst us, ignored and forgotten. Their history dismised from mind, beauty enhanced from the natural elements with nobody to admire.

Shadows of the past As long as I can remember I have been always fascinated by abandoned buildings and the history trapped inside them. I used to imagine the people that might have lived there, daily events and interesting stories that happened there. It feels as if you can hear the dialogs and footsteps and see people passing you in the corridors. Old buildings, even after they are abandoned and left for decay, have their own story imprinted in the walls and objects that have been left behind. They are full of history and memories of the past: that eerie atmosphere, the tension when you see an abandoned building, as if the shadows of the past are still wandering the corridors reminiscing about the old days. Sunderland Boys orphanage was a perfect place to capture this feeling for the last time in a series of images as it is in the process of being turned into a functioning building. A lonely shadow of the past wanders the corridors to reminiscence about the past for the last time.

Pride Shukura Li was born in Birmingham, England to Jamaican parents. Being first generation British born Jamaican has dramatically influenced the nature of her work. Her work often ties in with culture and belonging, and explores how ones identity is disturbed when raised in a Western society. Shukuras work corresponds with a well-known saying by Caribbean – American writer Audre Lorde. “If you don’t define yourself for yourself, then you will be crushed into other people fantasies of you and eaten alive”
