Edition Edition is a fine art photography magazine from students at Northern Centre of Photography, University of Sunderland, Photography, Video and Digital Imaging BA (Hons). This magazine acts as a platform for our students to get their work out to a wider audience. In this issue we showcase a range of students’ work across all three years working in a variety of different mediums; ranging from traditional chemical and digital through to alternative processes. We want to thank everyone for the success on the first issue of Edition. We now also have an Edition website showcasing more work which can be found here.

Subsistence The landscape brings with is a sense of belonging. It defines people and nations. We seek economic value from the land, but we degrade it in the process. Population growth, climate change and Globalisation increasingly pose a threat to our landscape. We are a race pushing the land to its limits in a fight to survive.

Sleep This piece of work spans over an entire month, creating a long exposure each night, documenting a night’s sleep. I wanted this project to show the different and/ or continual habits present through an entire month.

Overly Suspicious Overly Suspicious explores and reveals the emotions and consequences of living with extreme paranoia in day to day life. This series describes what it is like living with paranoia and anxiety, portraying the disparity and constant apprehension. ‘Uncontrollable, Overflowing, Destruction, Protection.’

The Myth

The Myth A myth is often being described as a socially powerful traditional story. The ancient Greeks used myths to explain the surrounding world and the natural phenomena, understand mysteries of life and death, express their admiration for their heroes and to satisfy their needs for role models. Myths deal with issues which have profound association with the cultural and religious beliefs, as well as the everyday social life of the individuals belonging in a specific society.

Hebburners We all have that place we call home. A place that inspires a sense of belonging. Somewhere we always feel like we can return to. For some, where you grow up is not always a positive place, but for many that place is respected and cherished. I was born in a small town South bank of the River Tyne that goes by the name of Hebburn. For me it is somewhat bittersweet, it is a place I never want to leave, yet I do not wish to stay. Each person I photograph has taken their own path in life, but there is one thing we all have in common, our connection with that one place. Hebburn has took us under it’s wings, it has taught us, it has nurtured us, it has watched us grow, until we were all old enough to fly.

Waste

Waste People go to a local beauty spot to enjoy themselves, when they get there they expect it to be clean and free of litter. Whilst they are there they discard their own litter with little or no regard for the environment, or the people who will be visiting the beach after them.

Escapism

Escapism These dream like scenes are a reflection of significant moments in my relationship with my partner, Keith. From where we first met to where we spend much of our time and the adventures we have had. These images highlight the beauty in often overlooked places, only romanticised by the light of the setting sun.

R.E.M. ‘R.E.M.’ is about the images you remember from strange dreams, images which correspond to feelings you can not describe in words, but only feel or visualise. The rapidity with which everything is visualised creates new worlds, unreal spaces, surreal facts.

Wonderland We all went to the Park when we were younger. It is an experience that makes an indelible impression. As we grow older it changes, it is no longer just somewhere we go to play. We remember the childhood games and the imaginative life that we had when we were there. The park is still the place I go to let my imagination run wild, to escape from reality for a little while. Here, I am not in the park, I am in my Wonderland.

Best of Show At the best of show is revealed the quintessence of the doglovers unconditional bond for what has been celebrated as an Englishman’s best friend. Some of us take these relationships to a whole new level with our furry friends. Others swoon, kiss and even immortalise the animals that they choose to keep company with throughout their lives. Within the world of the dog show, aficionados fight tooth and nail to compete for their ‘best’ and beloved breeds. In this act of collective ‘dog worship’ owners unit to ‘share the love’ taking enormous pride and effort in the showing of their domestic dogs, elevating their dog loving to the next level.

The Secular Society With the notion of a British state religion a distant memory and the emergence of a multiethnic, multicultural society; a fundamental shift is occurring in the integration of foreign cultures and beliefs into the British consciousness. As would be expected this transition is not an entirely seamless process and the population must evolve with this changing environment. The Secular Society examines the changing British religious landscape from the Church’s spire to the Mosque’s minarets. It explores the juxtaposition of strikingly foreign architecture placed into a British landscape. Importantly this work also examines the apparent regional religious segregation in the importance of the particular locations in which the pictures have been made: Liverpool, Bradford, London and Ulverston.

The Hub

The Hub An object can have many connotations and meanings, standing for the personal purpose and structure within. The bike is seen as something universal throughout society, it holds a traditional process but can construct broad lifestyle choices. Each in their own bespoke way this can grow into an obsessive outlook on life that is camouflaged as passion. The choices people make stands for what they believe in, foregoing what they represent. (stills from multimedia series) The Hub multimedia pieces can be viewed here.

Full Circle A downsized, closed community where ‘mobile’ homes are stabilized and a domestic environment is created; curtains twitch, a robust neighbourhood watch scheme is in place. Nothing goes a miss. The homeowners are immaculately proud ensuring their ornaments are pristinely placed upon the windowsill and their curtains are neatly pressed, the garden becomes their pride and joy as they self-consciously obsess; creating a contest between their neighbours as to whose garden is best. Hanging oversized flower baskets and littering the lawn with garden gnomes, a persistent game of one-upmanship continues to go on. An elderly gentleman tells a tale of the ornaments coming alive once the clock strikes twelve, whilst his wife sweeps the autumn leaves, shaking her head in despair. A one way, tarmacked looped road forms a map around the site, beyond this; void space ties together the inhabited plots, creating an environment compact with the something and the nothing.

Vetinary Procedure

Vetinary Procedure Vetinary Procedure studies the fragile symbiotic relationship between surgeon and patient and considers spiritual presence with regards to ideas of ‘god like’ intervention and a spiritual bond between man and animal. Obsessive Collective

Obsessive Collective If an object exists, it is highly likely somewhere somebody is collecting that object. Having a strong interest in any field can trigger an impulse to collect items linked with the subject. That impulse can be obsessive. This can turn into a process of seeking, acquiring, organising and cataloging which needs to be completed before the collector is satisfied with the addition of the object. This can reach a point in which the collector only acquires some objects for the sake of the collection, not because the collector likes the object.
