BLOOD TIES

Blood Ties The idea of the perfect and close-knit family exists in only fragments of the imagination. These poignant memories of what were once insignificant and harmless things have made their way from the light and into the darkness with adolescence. This body of work approaches the physical aspects of the family photograph, but incorporates the sense of loss and betrayal that has happened within the family. Through a series of self-portraits; it deconstructs individual conflicts and then manifests themselves into the form of an image. “If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance.” -George Bernard Shaw’

Oystermen Oystermen is a brief exploration of the oyster industry at Lindisfarne. This is a prime example of sustainable food production in a fragile landscape. The low impact nature of farming oysters means that this particular farm can be right in the middle of Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve, surrounded by seals and wintering fowl without a single negative impact to the environment, a truly harmonious food source that has been here since the 14th century.

Before the transplant, the recipient underwent four heart operations to temporarily help him live his life normally, while he waited for a donor heart. During this time, he was mentally and physically drained. But after years of waiting, a donor heart finally became available. The recipient’s story aims to look at the positive outlook of having the treatment and the success of organ donations. It makes awareness of the cause and the valuable life it makes to save lives. THE LITTLE WOODEN HOUSE

The Little Wooden House In June 2014 I travelled to Nicaragua for ten weeks with the charity, Raleigh International. I lived with a host family for the whole ten weeks in an extremely remote community called San Marcos Dos. No matter the experience or circumstance you find yourself in, feeling like an outsider is something we have all felt. What happens when you take all of your western cultural beliefs, social norms and an actual life of luxury and you impose yourself on another family? A family, who by western standards, has nothing but in actuality their innate family values remain the same, despite time period, language or whereabouts. (stills from piece)

B4RN

B4RN During recent years our reliability on technology, its many advancements and the Internet has been ever increasing. This has left many rural communities behind, with large Internet Service Providers refusing to install and implement fibre optic cables due to the low profit return. The rural areas of England and their communities have been forced to deal with little or no Internet connection at all. Throughout this documentary piece I followed community efforts, through the Project B4RN (Broadband for the Rural Nation), to supply rural houses with Hyper-Fast broadband without the help of any large, already established ISP. Through investments coming from the community members themselves and with others volunteering, the project has allowed houses all over the Lancashire area to receive Internet speeds that are currently the fastest in the world, along with being more resilient and fail-proof than some major ISPs. This series of images demonstrates the true power of communities and what they can accomplish when working together.

Disillusions Disillusions, is a visual exploration of time and memory. These photographs recite a fictional past, reformed by the human memory. Nature is used as a motif to reflect time as a fleeting subject. These photographs are all temporary moments in the dynamics of time. Absence is personified in objects and old photographs, which appear to hold a vague personal significance. The narrative is continued by text entwined among the photographs. Fragments of a past relationship resurface; anonymous recollections lost from the flow of time. There is no offer of an end, but a suggested continuation of a journey.

We often stayed out late, wandering aimlessly amongst the suburbia, as the sun continued to set. I was content to wander, content to enjoy the simplicity of it all.

REGULATION

Regulation Within the working environment many regulations surrounding health and safety are put into place. For a job that seems so simple there are many things that the worker must remember. Regulation looks at the multiple things that are displayed in this one environment and how much attention is actually paid to any of it.

02:35:43 The notion of time is an abstract array of moments; each individual experiences their timeline striving and entwining with others in their path. Time itself is measured in seconds, minutes and hours, but the value of time is interpreted on how that time is spent. This series of images explores the idea of wasting time; particularly focusing on the small mundane moments that pass us by, and the internal monologue that accompanies us during those moments. “There is no present or future, only the past, happening over and over again, now. Eugene O’Neill; A Moon for the Misbegotten.

FOREIGN MATTER

Foreign Matter Laying the foundations for my work is an interest in the conflicting relationship between humans and nature. I am interested in how the often-detrimental effects that man has on the marine environment are repeatedly overlooked. Working with both the photograph and the photogram allows me to create some balance between control and chance: themes that are ever-present when discussing the man vs. nature debate. The photogram also allows for nature to be presented, rather than represented. Nature appears as a trace: something that once was, potentially determining the future of the environment.

77 BATHGATE CLOSE

77 Bathgate Close My grandparents first moved into their home in North Tyneside thirtysix years ago. 77 Bathgate Close is a house I have never really been familiar with. However, as a child it was a family tradition for us to visit every year on Christmas Eve. My parents, my siblings and I would sit with my grandparents and open an early Christmas present, one each. Recently I have come to realise the seriousness of Grandads illness and how this not only affects him on a daily basis, but effects how Grandma lives also. Because of illness, both of them are trapped together within their home, as if they have had to build everything within this enclosed space. Through photographing and spending time with my grandparents, has enabled me to get to know them as family members. It has enabled me to have a closer relationship with these two individuals whom I have always viewed as strangers.

New Territories In the late 1970s, my parents moved over to the UK from Hong Kong to start a new life. After settling here, they opened up their own catering business, earning their own income from it and began to start their family together. Living in the UK for over 40 years, they are accustomed to the western lifestyle, but still keep a strong sense of eastern culture around the home. Being born in the UK, I was brought up with a strong influence of the western culture with a minimal amount of traditional eastern culture. Along with both of my sisters, together we see the changed and the mix of both cultures in everyday life. ‘New Territories’ is a body of work that looks into my personal life of the eastern culture, particularly in a domestic setting. Being brought up with the western lifestyle, I was interested in the way my family lived domestically and how it differs from other western family households. Being Chinese, I grew up with a strong western influence and there are things that are different from other homes, being the objects we store for decoration or the preferences of the home interior, which are the characteristics that personalise a home. The project sees a series of images that have been photographed in three different locations, all houses, which are owned by three members in the same family; my parents and my two older sisters. Each home shows the different changes within the objects and interior, starting from the traditional to the modern home, questioning the issues of identity in a culture. The final series of work shows a collection of images of the domestic still life and home interior, referencing eastern culture in a home that is appropriated by text, which includes a timeline of events leading up to the 1970s. The reason for this maximum time scale was to reference my parent’s year of migration. The years before this held important events that changed the migration of the Chinese and the hardship of the earlier arrivals. These earlier Chinese settlers encountered personal and radical difficulties whilst settling in the UK. This holds importance for the current immigration laws and the political events that are happening in the UK and the future of immigration and the government, which is set to change. It also references the current protests in Hong Kong and the uprising, causing disruption of the country, relatable to its history of democracy with the UK.

Going on holiday was always the best time of the year for me when I was a child, I was even exciting getting in the taxi to the airport. Feeling like a 45-minute journey was a lifetime, curling up in the back with my mum and seeing my dad smiling knowing that I had the best family.

WAKING UP IN A HOUSE THAT ISN’T MINE

I always had the sense of freedom when coming on holiday, knowing that I could get away with murder. Mum and dad would always be laughing and smiling, I felt like the people should be envious of my family. Our holidays would be filled with me dragging mum and dad into the pool, beaches where I’d always get an extra big ice cream, treats from my dad and just 2 weeks of pure happiness. The feeling of us being a unit was never as strong as when we was on holiday, even though we had holidays every year for 17 years these memories are becoming lost and hard to remember. The unit is no longer there.

WAKING UP IN A HOUSE THAT ISN’T MINE

Finishing work was the best part of my day, finally turning the key to shut the shutters and walking through the empty shopping centre feeling the relief that I would shortly be in my dad’s car on my way home. As I stood there scanning the car park for my dad’s car, I slowly realised that it was my mum coming to pick me up. The first words out of my mouth were ‘where is dad?’ not realising that this was probably a stab in the heart for my mum. Her response was ‘He has to go away for work’ and I thought no more of it. The journey home was short and I was finally in the warmth of my house.

THE INFESTATION OF STRESS: LEARNING THE PRESENT

The Infestation of Stress: Learning the Present “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” Buddha Anxiety doesn’t feel self controlled. It feels like a force stopping your body from moving. Your feet become heavy, your lips become stuck together and your head is bursting with screaming thoughts. Your hands become shaky, your eyes become teary and your energy is sucked out of you. It isn’t something you can switch off. Unfortunately you have to wait until you can breath. I hate feeling out of control! I panic about panicking. I need to learn to accept how I think and learn some coping mechanisms that are not detrimental to my mental / physical health. When I feel in control I feel like I have a hold of my puppet strings. They hold me up to stand tall and straight. My eyes gaze forward as my feet glide forward fast and lightly. My thoughts become processed separately: one by one, creative and comprehensible. I become less reclusive as I don’t feel a burden to anyone. I can breath.

MADE IN ENGLAND

Made In England We flip through the pages of our family albums in the hope of discovering our relatives and sometimes ourselves. We want to know the stories that led to their smiling faces in a photograph or how we are related to the family gathered round a birthday cake. However, what happens when you don’t inherit an organised family album, telling coherent stories, but a collection of disorganised strangers in a biscuit tin. A tin that contains the family I never met. A tin that contains the family I will never know. When the photographs contain only unrecognisable faces rather than familiar ones, the collection of photographs can create a labyrinth of unanswerable questions.
