Catherine Ceresole Beauty Lies in the Eye
With texts in English Softcover, approx. 312 pages 20.5 × 28.5 cm | 8 × 11 ¼ in.
In 1979 Catherine Ceresole and her husband Nicolas moved to New York, where he was to begin training as an audio engineer. In truth, however, the couple went there because they were captivated by the city’s underground music scene. They soon became friendly with a number of musicians who Catherine began to photograph at concerts and in intimate settings. The result was a unique photographic documentary of the New York punk, no-wave and avant-garde music scene during its heyday. With her keen eye for dramatic moments, she captured them all on film: Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch, Glenn Branca, Arto Lindsay, Christian Marclay, the Beastie Boys and many others. After they returned to Switzerland, Catherine Ceresole continued to photograph musicians and their bands — with an unfailing ear and keen eye. The book is a visual music history of the last decades, presenting the work of this unique photographer to a broad public for the first time. The Swiss photographer Catherine Ceresole (b. 1956, Bern) studied and worked in New York for twelve years. She currently lives and works in Rolle (Switzerland) and Majorca (Spain). Texts by Christian Marclay, Thurston Moore, Rhys Chatham, Mark Cunningham, Lee Ranaldo, Alan Licht, and a conversation between Catherine Ceresole and Emmanuel Grandjean, along with Nicolas Ceresole and Francis Baudevin. David Renggli 20 % Painting
Softcover, approx. 496 pages Approx. 497 color illustrations 21.5 × 28.5 cm | 8 ½ × 11 ¼ in.
The Swiss artist David Renggli, a child of postmodernism, weaves popular culture and art historical topoi into his work with a playful ease, molding it into a homogenous whole. The origins of this book lie in Renggli’s exhibition The Charm of Ignorance (2013) that was shown in Museum Bellpark in Kriens. Renggli mounted almost two thousand pictures in a rigid “St. Petersburg hanging.” The collages, incorporating images from fashion and porn magazines, art catalogs and discovered photographs, interlace opposites. The observer loses himself in the presentation and falls into a trance-like state; a celebration of the artistic act through creative acceleration — the artist spends about three minutes on a single picture — which produces a huge amount of single works. At first glance they appear familiar. Only under more careful observation do they reveal their surreal grotesque absurdity. Surprise moments and repetition as an aesthetic principle are returning themes in Renggli’s work and lead to a magnificent state of ambivalence which connects us with the either / or sides of a problem. 20 % Painting is a collection of approx. 500 of the original approx. 2000 collages that were repeatedly and arbitrarily re-arranged during the printing process, making each book its own unique work of art. David Renggli (b. 1974), Swiss artist and musician, lives and works in Zurich and Texas. N° 141 ISBN 978-3-905929-41-6 EUR 62 | CHF 78

Lisa Meier Funeral Fashion
With texts by Irene K. Odotei and Lisa Meier in English Hardcover, 250 pages 120 color images 20.2× 27 cm | 8 × 10 ½ in.
In many parts of Ghana, funeral ceremonies last for several days and display an important aspect of the country’s culture. These elaborate celebrations are part of the mourning process, but they also function as a platform for social exchange. In this context, the clothing of the mourners plays a central role. The clothing styles range from traditional to contemporary, and are influenced by changing fashion trends. Funeral attire and its signs and symbols visually display the character of Ghanaian society. The costume designer Lisa Meier has made several trips to Ghana, attending funerals in different regions and capturing the ceremonies and the mourning attire in photographs of great immediacy. The book, which was edited in collaboration with Ghanaian historian Prof. Irene K. Odotei, helps us to understand the clothes of the mourners and it provides an intimate view of West African culture, showing how it deals with death. Lisa Meier (b. 1956, Bülach), costume designer and professor at UdK Berlin, lives and works in Berlin.

H. R. Giger Alien Diaries
Hardcover, 660 pages 48 b/w images and 59 color images 13 × 23.5 cm | 5 × 9 ¼ in.
H. R. Giger worked in the Shepperton Studios near London from February to November 1978, creating the figures and sets for the film Alien (1979) directed by Ridley Scott. The film became an international success, earning Giger an Oscar. In the transcribed Alien Diaries, published here for the first time as a facsimile, H. R. Giger describes his work in the studios. He writes, sketches, and takes photographs with his Polaroid SX70. With brutal honesty, sarcasm, and occasional despair, Giger describes what it is like working for the film industry and how he struggles against all odds — be it the stinginess of producers or the sluggishness of his staff — to see his designs become reality. The Alien Diaries (in German transcription with an English translation) show a little-known personal side of the artist H. R. Giger and offer an unusual, detailed glimpse into the making of a movie classic through the eyes of a Swiss artist. The book contains almost completely unpublished material, including drawings, Polaroids showing the monster coming to life, and several still shots from the plentiful film material that Giger took in Shepperton. H. R. Giger (b. 1940, Chur) is a Swiss painter, visual artist, and designer.

Michael Blaser Mittelland
Hardcover, 144 pages 72 color images 25.5 × 25.5 cm | 10 ×10 in.
Das Mittelland (The Midlands) — a landscape strewn with buildings, oscillating between nature and urbanity. A world full of intersections and gray zones, city and countryside, nature and development, public and private space merging into one. Are the Midlands merely a conurbation, one large housing settlement? Michael Blaser grew up in the suburbs, which is perhaps why he has taken an interest in its idiosyncrasies. He does not create landscape and architecture photographs. His pictures are a social documentation. These domesticated landscapes together with their infrastructures are a reflection of contemporary Switzerland, a country striving for a modern, urban identity, and yet still unable to free itself of its provincial image.

Marie Angeletti Fabricants Couleurs
With texts in English Hardcover, 168 pages 180 color and b/w images 19 × 27.5 cm | 7 ½ × 11 in.
Fabricants Couleurs arose from visits that the French artist Marie Angeletti made to factories of the French paint manufacturer Pébéo. The company, in addition to producing art paints, also makes creative products for children and leisure activities. The artist visited the two main factories in southern France and in China and worked with employees at both locations. The aim of the project was to create art while at work with employees who are also amateur artists. Angeletti was searching for connections between the two production sites and was especially interested in questioning the relationship between the image and the image support. The book presents a broad mix of collaborative projects: Angeletti intermeshes her own works with the art of the employees and the works hanging in the factory. The project raises the question of the role of authorship in an artist’s work; who made which piece remains unclear and unimportant. Marie Angeletti (b. 1984, Marseille) lives and works in Brussels. Her most recent exhibitions include Mixed Feeling, COLE, London (2012); Daegu Photo Biennale 2012, Daegu; Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2011: In the Presence, ICA, London; Vitrine Gallery, London (2012). Texts by Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Estelle Blaschke, and Doreen Mende. Nº 146 ISBN 978-3-905929-46-1 EUR 54 | CHF 68

STUDIOLO / Edition Patrick Frey Keiichi Tanaami No More War
With a text by Keiichi Tanaami Softcover, 96 pages 76 color illustrations 21 × 29 cm | 8 ½ × 11 ¼ in.
The publication NO MORE WAR presents a group of recently discovered sculptural works created by the Japanese popart pioneer Keiichi Tanaami (b. 1936, Tokyo) in the 1980s. The wood-cut sculptures recall children’s toys and represent an unexpected break from the artist’s usual style. They form an obscure world of objects reminiscent of the frozen figures from his early films that connect the aesthetic of American advertisements and fragmented memories of World War II. Today these unusual sculptures call to mind video game creatures, fantastical architectural models and postmodern design, but they also retain a connection to traditional Japanese handicrafts. Born in 1936 as the son of a textile wholesaler, Tanaami was nine years old when he experienced the bombing of Tokyo towards the end of World War II. He studied at the Musahino Art University, visited Andy Warhol in New York in 1969, worked with both Robert Rauschenberg and art critic Michel Tapié during their travels to Japan, and designed record covers for Jefferson Airplane and The Monkees. In 1975 Tanaami became the first art director of the Japanese edition of Playboy Magazine. He has been teaching at the Kyoto University of Art and Design since 1991. NO MORE WAR is the second publication in the series STUDIOLO / Edition Patrick Frey. Nº 140 ISBN 978-3-905929-40-9 EUR 32 | CHF 40

Max Küng Pensive Racing Drivers
Hardcover, 48 pages 50 color images 16.5 × 22 cm | 8 ¼ × 6 ¾ in.
The picture of jubilant race drivers brandishing oversized champagne bottles is only too familiar. But the life of a race driver has always been dictated by losses, setbacks, confrontations with technical defects, accidents, disqualifications, and problems of an unknown nature. Like life in general, it is difficult. And that is what this book is about. The first tears that Max Küng (b. 1969) can remember shedding were on December 16, 1982. It was a Thursday, the day it was announced on the radio that Colin Chapman had died. They were tears of sorrow; Chapman was the founder and the genius behind Lotus Sports and Motorcar Specialist, which was the focus of Küng’s interest at the time. Max Küng had collected automobile magazines since he was a child and had never missed a single Formula 1 television broadcast. “Cars saved my childhood,” Küng said. “As a fat, unathletic boy with glasses, I didn’t have any friends — not counting the pile of automobile magazines. Back then I knew everything about cars; that earned me a certain respect, even with the densest, meanest, and most brutal town youths. They left me alone instead of constantly beating me up. I am grateful to cars for that, still today.”

David Küenzi Zustandsaufnahme
With a text by Patrick Schrag in German and English Hardcover, 296 pages 187 color images 21.5 × 29.5 cm | 8 ½ × 11 ¾ in.
This book provides a glimpse into the archive of status assessment photos that David Küenzi took for the city of Zurich over a period of several years. The Debt Enforcement Registry of the city of Zurich 6 issues a certified report commissioned by the owner or builder of real estate or property that is to be converted, renovated or torn down, or when construction of a new building is planned. The report includes a status assessment of pre-existing structural damage (cracks, chipping, etc.) that consists of a text summary and photographic documentation. The municipal office is obligated to work with professional freelance photographers. Here, Küenzi’s documentation of the various kinds of cracks is presented in a very different context, that of an artistic book. What began as a mere functional document evolved into an independent image of unfathomable beauty. At times the photographs recall abstract paintings; others seem to allude to the rather disturbing obsessive orderliness of the Swiss. In the Edition Patrick Frey, Zustandsaufnahme joins the series of photographic research projects on buildings, architecture, and artistic examinations of archives. David Küenzi (b. 1974, Zurich) works as a freelance photographer. He studied Fine Arts at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Holland. Presently he lives in Zurich and is working on new book publications. Dieter Maurer / Claudia Riboni Wie die Bilder zu den Häusern finden und das Haus ins Bild kommt
With a text by Dieter Maurer Softcover, 400 pages 17 × 24 cm | 9 ½ × 6 ¾ in.
How pictures find houses and the house comes into the picture are among the findings of many years of extended research conducted by Dieter Maurer and Claudia Riboni on the question of early children’s pictures and their development. Unlike an academic treatise, this book places its entire trust in the power of the pictures themselves, using the observation of them to answer elementary questions about the picture, the house, and the human. Dieter Maurer (b. 1955, Zurich) first studied pedagogy, philosophy, and psychology at the universities of Tübingen and Zurich, after which he studied singing with Margrit Conrad-Amberg and music theory and history at the Zurich Conservatory and University. Claudia Riboni (b. 1968, Zurich) studied cultural studies, sociology, and history at the universities of Zurich and Cologne.

KCBR Live Life Like
With a text by Daniel Ryser in German and English Hardcover, 168 pages 22 × 28.5 cm | 8 ½ × 11 in.
Over the last few years the sprayers from KCBR have been working intensely, putting their names on pretty much every corner of Zurich — on building facades, rooftops, delivery trucks, trams, bus stops, and SBB trains. They pursue their activities with great discipline, planning everything down to the very last detail. They know the public transportation schedules by heart. This is essential since the timing of their activities requires a high degree of precision. KCBR LIVE LIFE LIKE, with a text by Das Magazin journalist Daniel Ryser, is a radical contemporary document about one of the most active graffiti crews in Zurich. It is also a book about the blind spots in the city’s history. KCBR is one of the graffiti crews in Zurich established by the sprayers Hello and Deal in 2008. Besides the founders, its most active members include the sprayers Argent and Hunter. The group has quite a few other members and numerous supporters who identify closely with the group. To correct false rumors, KCBR does not stand for “KiCkBoxeR” and not for “Kill Cops Be Real” either. To find out what it does stand for, read the text by Daniel Ryser.

Luciano Rigolini Private / Used
Texts in French and English Hardcover, approx. 112 pages Approx. 90 color images 16 × 19 cm | 6 ¼ × 7 ½ in.
Internet sales portals serve as the starting point for Luciano Rigolini’s newest book. Under the search headings “private” and “used,” the Swiss artist compiles pictures of private sellers who have photographed themselves with their used underwear. Private / Used meanders playfully between self-portrait, orchestration, and found photographs. Rigolini has created a subjective collection of photos from the overabundance of images available on the Internet. These photos, through their imagery of signs, gestures, and poses, flirt with the erotic and fetishistic. The undoctored pictures elude elegant erotic stereotypes and common codes of conventional photography. Far from a sociological approach, Rigolini’s presentation shakes up our understanding of photographic intimacy and invites the viewer to embark on a wondrous journey in which photographs, removed from their original context, succeed in transcending reality. The poem Prendre Corps by the Rumanian poet and theorist Gherasim Luca (1913 – 1994) forms a surrealistic counterpoint to the book’s photographic section. Luciano Rigolini (b. 1950) studied at the Université Paris VIII, Département Cinéma. In the early 1990s he attracted international attention with his Urban Landscapes, in which he explored the principles of photography and the relationship between form and content in the photographic image.

Michael Günzburger Plots
Hardcover, 164 pages 786 color images 25.5 × 37 cm | 10 × 14 ½ in.
Plots is a “big heap” of various materials, the artist’s own pictures, those of others, as well as concepts and methods. A hundred drawing books serve as the starting point for conceptual works about entire mountain valleys, sculptures, construction sites, prints, and dialogs. Diverse trains of thought and narrative lines are continually weaved anew into a multitude of works. Plots is a sequence of these illustrated threads, arranged according to theme, meandering between handcraft, the production of pigments made from fruit fly eyes, or a fictitious exhibition. The artist’s book is neither a documentation nor a monograph. It is an illustration of the search for a visual strategy. Michael Günzburger’s (b. 1974, Bern) work revolves around drawings and has been shown throughout Switzerland and internationally, for example in Mexico, Paris and Zurich. His work is represented both in private and public collections. His drawing books from 1991 – 2006 are preserved in the Graphic Collection of the Swiss National Library.

Sebastian Heeb Zulu Romeo Hotel
With a text by Sebastian Heeb Hardcover, 80 pages 34 b/w images 21 × 31.5 cm | 8 ¼ × 12 ½ in.
At first glance it appears to be a series of black-and-white photos showing gently rolling hills. But then the eye begins to catch notice of large shadows on the ground. These surreal and mildly threatening undefined forms reveal themselves to be the shadows cast by airplanes. And what was perceived to be pastoral landscape images are actually pictures of the landing lane at Zurich airport — abbreviated ZRH and known in pilot radio talk as Zulu Romeo Hotel. Every two minutes a passenger airplane thunders toward Runway 14 from the West, casting a shadow as big as a hill. The artist’s book, created by the young photographer Sebastian Heeb (b. 1990), is not a documentation about airports or air traffic. It outlines the visual conflict that exists between landscape, airplanes, and shadows. It is open to association and can be read in various ways. The photos are accompanied by a short text that is based on an interview with a Swissair pilot who describes the landing approach to Runway 14. The brevity and technical precision of the text forms a counterpoint to the lyrical photographs. Sebastian Heeb (b. 1990) is studying photography at F+F School for Art and Media Design Zurich.

Hardcover, approx. 76 pages Approx. 217 color images 23 × 26.5 cm | 9 × 10 ½ in.
“They had won the impression that they had grown too attached to old traditions. It was time to modernize: flowing full beards. A short time later they were erecting palisades, populating untrodden lands and barricading themselves behind their facial decoration. Evolution played its part and a long, carefree period came to pass. This idiosyncratic people was not discovered again until the era of European expansion. The full beard was perceived as an alluring raw material and with its exploitation the bearded man was increasingly encroached upon. Later he assimilated again, primarily in Switzerland. This book is a testimony to the uniqueness of this people. Discovered photographs document their existence. The book spans a period from 1880 to 1980, ending with the last known photograph of this breed of humans.” (Marc Elsener) the beard, of a much darker hue, fell in a great tangled mass and lay along the ground at his feet Ambrose Bierce Marc Elsener (b. 1971) lives and works as an artist in Zurich.

David Weiss 9 Artist’s Books 1973 – 1979
9 facsimile books in slipcase 11 × 18 cm | 4 ¾ × 7 in. LIMITED EDITION / NO REPRINT
Before he began working with Peter Fischli, David Weiss (1946 – 2012), who studied sculpture at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel, participated from 1975 – 1977 in various national and international gallery and museum exhibitions where he showed his early drawings, for example in the exhibition Mentalität Zeichnung (1976), curated by Jean-Christophe Ammann in the Kunstmuseum Luzern. Almost without exception, these large-format works on paper originated from small-format drawing books or pads that David Weiss never regarded as sketchbooks but instead saw as independent works and as part of the pool and archive of his entire artistic oeuvre, traces of which can also be found in later sculptural works by Fischli / Weiss. Edition Patrick Frey is enormously pleased to publish, in cooperation with Edition Weiss, a new edition of these mostly newly rediscovered and fascinating early works by the internationally acclaimed Swiss artist. This representative collection 9 Artist’s Books 1973 – 1979, published in a limited edition, was initiated by David Weiss himself; after his death the editorial work was overseen by Iwan Schumacher. The original sketchbooks, all of which are part of the David Weiss estate curated by the artist’s son Oskar Weiss, include the works Comix, the legendary Regenbüchlein and the water-color series Im Bad, published in 1974 / 1975 by Edition Pablo Stähli. They have been printed and bound in a limited edition as a facsimile of the original format. Distribution only through Edition Patrick Frey
