Catalog 2015

Editorial Once upon a time, in the mid-1970s, people still knew what to expect when they turned on the TV, at least during the daytime : often as not, nothing but the test pattern. Nowadays we can have whatever we want whenever we want it : widely-acclaimed narrative web-formats, data journalism, videos and movies on YouTube and Netflix, social media and live crisis, strike or sports tickers. The deluge of digital images makes everything appear more sensational, more enlightening, more sexual and more violent, more sober, more beautiful, more unrestrainedly sentimental and absurdly funny – and it works like a hologram : every second of every day contains what’s happening, or at least happening on the World Wide Web. So it’s all right for us to turn back to gross matter again now. In these times of ubiquitous information and displays, and in which worriers warn we’re producing digital amnesia rather than collective memory, books provide a material counterpoint. In the wake of digitization and standardization, printed matter is displaying a marked trend towards self-referentiality and it is now as much about massage as about message.
It’s a brave new world and it starts with test patterns too. By opening the perforated pages of this catalog, you’ll find that the image content of the books in the 2015 lineup has undergone a productional twist that might well shed a new light on the featured titles. They were not offset-printed in standard

CMYK-colors, but with the admixture in various combinations of Pantone, silver or neon colors. This is how variations of the CMYK-color originals shown on the outside pages were produced. The experimental arrangement made it possible not only to test and experiment with digitally generated color profiles, but to create new ones (see left page), which are in turn scanned into the Color Profile Library (www.colorlibrary.ch). The Color Profile Library is part of Workflow, a research project at ECAL (Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne) looking for neo-analog methods of print production, funded by HES-SO (Haute école spécialisée de Suisse occidentale) and supported by Edition Patrick Frey. The present catalog is not out to save letterpress printing or lament its premature demise, but to celebrate and conjure it. And to convey our conviction that printed books still have some fine years ahead.

I love to dress like I am coming 01 from somewhere and I have a place to go by Swiss photographer Flurina Rothenberger is a small window onto a large world. This photography book shows everyday life in the most varied corners of the African continent, slices of life generally not covered by Western media. The photographs are colorful and also banal, sometimes even contradictory, but always genuine and subtle. –> p. 12

02 “There are prisons for thieves, museums for artists.” This was the credo of Swiss artist Jean Tinguely (19251991) when he acquired an abandoned Swiss factory in 1988. He spent four years working tirelessly to turn the 3,000 sq. m. space into his studio –  a workshop, theater, exhibition venue and artwork all in one. Jean Tinguely. Torpedo Institut provides edifying and authentic documentation aimed at reconstructing this “anti-museum” in its entirety for the first time. –> p. 13

03 The pictures in Gasoline and Magic, often impressive and quasi intimate shots of the motor racing world, were taken by amateur photographers in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. Everything about them is cool : the baby blue Porsche 917, the striped overalls, the boys sporting moustaches with the sunshine in their faces, women wearing thick eyeliner and bell-bottoms, and girls in crocheted bikinis at the finishing line. –> p. 14

Chic and richlly illustrated, 04 Haussmann for Weinberg is a fashion, design, and architecture book in equal parts. The collaboration between the family-run specialty fashion store Weinberg in Zürich and the Swiss designing architects duo Trix and Robert Haussmann spans a quarter century. Together they developed atmospheric and cleverly innovative store concepts. –> p. 15

05 Morgan Is Sad Today captures the Zeitgeist on a trip to the mythobsessed London of the Sixties or Zürich back in the days when Beat bands still posed head to head for record covers and guitarists still leapt spread-eagle on stage sporting skinny ties and flamencodancer ankle boots. The texts by Ettore Sottsass and Sandro Fischli provide context, telling a somewhat frayed, subjective and richly associative social and cultural history of the 1960s. –> p. 16

06 Mask is an artist’s book by Luciano Rigolini presenting an extensive series of grilles from American cars built between 1955 and 1962, a period in which developments in engineering technology ushered in unprecedented creative possibilities in automotive design. One conspicuous trend played up the fronts of vehicles, rendering them veritable sculptures in their own right. –> p. 17

07 ORIGINALE – Einladungskarten 2005 – 2013 is about Thomas Müllenbach’s series Halboriginale (“Semi-originals”). The point of departure for this series was the countless invitations to exhibitions he found in his mailbox every day. The artist has transposed this documentation into watercolors. Müllenbach’s “semioriginals” are neither forgeries nor copies, but unusual interpretations or, in the artist’s own words, “handmade appropriation”. –> p. 18

08 Die Not hat ein Ende – The Swiss Art of Rock (“Need Comes To an End – The Swiss Art of Rock”) is about the history of rock music in Switzerland. The focus here is on the stunning visual output of these subcultures : album covers, concert posters, fanzines, comics, and photographs. –> p. 19

09 Shipbreak by Paris-based photographer Claudio Cambon tells the story of the last voyage, dismantling, and recycling of an American merchant ship in Bangladesh in the late 1990s. It describes how the ship was a source of livelihood for different individuals and how their lives collectively give this mighty vessel a metaphoric life and afterlife of its own. The book becomes a meditation on the nature of life itself, on its loss and transcendence. –> p. 20

10 In der Wohnung (“In the Apartment”) is a journey across a landscape strewn with works by German artist Albert Oehlen, which, in turn, refer to paintings by Thomas Arnolds, Richard Artschwager, Mike Kelley, Martin Kippenberger, Roy Lichtenstein et al, making it really a journey through time. We come upon a building in the landscape, enter rooms inside the building, and are ready for a tour of the Albert Oehlen exhibition “In the Apartment” (In der Wohnung, 2014). –> p. 21

11 Barbara Davatz’s As Time Goes By. Portraits 1982, 1988, 1997 is now considered a classic. In 2014, 32 years after she’d taken the very first pictures of her subjects, the Swiss photographer resumed this epic project, the long-term observation of an urban milieu, and shot a new round of portraits of the same cast of characters. –> p. 22

12 The Weststrasse in Zürich : once a central transit axis, today a neighborhood street with a 30 kph speed limit. Zürich-based photographer Corina Flühmann has been documenting this metamorphosis since 2007. Weststrasse is not just a sober longterm photographic documentation, a hodgepodge of colorful illustrations of local street life or another book about gentrification. This artist’s book is instead a precise portrait of Zürich’s social demographics. –> p. 23

13 The Swiss natural scientist, photographer, publisher and patron of the arts Andreas Züst kept a visual diary. Menschen, Tiere, Abenteuer presents his observations of visual phenomena, social ties and contemporary events in chronological order. This is Züst’s most personal book and the most revealing in his artistic œuvre as a whole. –> p. 24

14 Female Chic. Thema Selection  is the beautifully illustrated story of the fashion label Thema Selection and its outlet and artists’ hangout in Zürich, which made quite a splash back in the 1970s. Vogue magazine wrote rapturously about this Swiss avant-garde fashion label, which caught the industry's eye with its androgynous, plainlycut work clothes for women made from men’s fabrics and with its eccentric fashion shows. –> p. 25

Money is a book about the 15 motifs on banknotes : pictures of political subject-matter, historical milestones, distinguished personages, status symbols, and landscapes. Banknotes are mini-posters proclaiming an idealized world. –> p. 26

16 In 1984, American artist Cameron Jamie started photographing Halloween decorations in his old neighborhood in suburban Los Angeles. Front Lawn Funerals and Cemeteries is about the opposing tensions of themes and imagery of death staged in these daylight domestic environments, between feelings of something at once very calm, humorous, violent, and uncanny. –> p. 27

17 Cascades is a handmade artist’s book by Aaron Flint Jamison, produced at his own printing facilities. Flint Jamison works with various broad forms of artistic production; he is a visual artist, the editor of a serial publication, and the co-founder of an art center. For this edition special attention is given to materiality, physicality and the exchange between author and machine. –> p. 28

18 “Bringing things close together that don’t belong together – the fusion and actualization of image and text, text and image, and image and image on improbable montages – is the fundamental strategy of Falsche Fährten (“False Journeys”), a raw combination, a bewildering simplicity.” (Peter Radelfinger) –> p. 29

19 27 dicke Bilder und fliegende Sätze (“27 Thick Pictures and Flying Sentences”) is a collection of text and photographic portraits of 27 painted clay figures. More precisely, these are miniature portraits of artists, publishers, poets, critics, filmmakers et al. “The point is to show the unique nature of their work and how they look at the world.” (Gundi Feyrer) –> p. 30

20 69 / 96 documents a Swiss exhibition organized by Fredi Fischli, Niels Olsen and Bob Nickas in 2014. Divided up into two parallel shows, “69” brought together artworks from 1969 chosen by American curator Bob Nickas, “96” showed works from 1996 selected by the two young curators. –> p. 31

Hair Affair, Haircore, 21 Jennyf’hair: hair salons are curious little worlds. Their names angle for attention, as do the window displays touting their particular aesthetic: Corinthian columns, fishing nets and shells, model cars and signed soccer balls, carnival masks, and many photos of Miss Switzerlands past and present. –> p. 32

22 Greetings from Auschwitz is a thought-provoking visual essay about the failure of both language and images in dealing with the social trauma caused by one of the darkest chapters in human history. It shows postcards sent by tourists visiting the former Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The oldest postcard dates from 1947 – just two years after the liberation of the camp. –> p. 33

The Swiss artist Beni Bischof 23 takes an unruly and intuitive approach to his work. In this hiatus from drawings, collages, paintings, sculptures and installations, Texte, his latest work-inprogress , is Bischof’s pure-text paperback assemblage of his collection of personal emails as well as headlines, slogans and jokes. –> p. 34
