Cl. 1-3 (A)
Exhausted, MARX staggers in, making his uncertain way to a secluded corner, still furtively clutching the strange and precious case. Finding a suitable seat, at a long, leather-clad partner’s desk, he attempts to settle into a padded chair, but has difficulty finding a comfortable position. Something is causing him physical discomfort. He pulls from out of his frock-coat a jumble of notes, through which he starts to sift. But his attention is soon drawn to a far reference book nearby, into which he hungrily delves.
