Piano Grand piano. Open piano lid fully, but do not remove. Remove music stand and place further back on the frame, or use the top section of a heavy music stand. Use white stickers on the metal frame to mark the strings inside the piano. There are five sounds. Four use the inside of the piano:
Damp string/s right by the bridge with left hand with maximum pressure for very round, dark and damped sound.
Damp strings in front of dampers further along the string for exact written overtones. Use brightly coloured thread wound around the string to mark exact position of each overtone. Written bass tone still heard. Release the finger damping the string immediately for maximum resonance of the harmonic.
Damp strings nearer bridge for very high indeterminate overtones. Dry. First of five is played „ord.“ and damped immediately!
Glissando gently and quickly with fingerpad over strings inside the piano. If frame of piano is in the way, choose another position nearby. ord. Chromatic cluster on the keys (ord.!).
Accordion Always without vibrato unless otherwise stated. Button accordion with manuals MI, MII and MIII, with the following ranges: = Range MI
= Range MIII
Written at sounding pitch with registers/stops indications. MI A chromatic cluster outer tones included. Clusters appear and disappear one-by-one.

General Instrumentation 2 flutes 2 clarinets in Bb flute 3, doubling piccolo 3 trumpets in C 4 horns 4 trombones – tenor 1 + 2 (with valve), bass-trombone 3 +4 (with independent double valve) harp 4 percussion button accordion grand piano violins 1 (12) violins 2 (12) violas (10) violoncelli (8) double basses (6–8) Seating Strings seated from high to low, left to right. Third flute/piccolo and brass in one line behind strings - piccolo and trumpets central. Piano, harp and accordion – stage left behind or within the violins, accordion in curve of piano, harp in front of piano. Percussion in a line behind brass – percussion 1 and 2 far stage-left, percussion 3 and 4 far stage-right. The 2 clarinets and 2 flutes stand in boxes or balconies left (flutes) and right (clarinets) of the stage. Sightlines to conductor essential. Exactly how far away depends on acoustic limitations and spacial possibilities. The written dynamics are relative to the orchestra and depend on the acoustic of the performance hall and the distance from box/balcony to stage. Tempi given are approximate guidelines, and can change according to the acoustic, particularly regarding pauses and resonances. Allow tempo fluctuations as necessary within each tempo in the slower opening pages. Bring out the close difference tones by varying the tempi as necessary.
The four winds separated from the orchestra weave a melodic strand through the orchestra. A fleeting juxatposition.
Duration: 9 – 10 minutes RS, Berlin 04.2010
