The map

Before we start on this long and fascinating musical journey around the world, we need to prepare and to get a map that will show us the way clearly and precisely. So, follow the signs carefully.

The road we will follow is called “STAFF” or “STAVE” and it is a set of fi ve horizontal lines and four spaces

At the start of each staff you’ll always fi nd a key that will help you to enter. It’s called “TREBLE CLEF”

You can try and copy the treble clef on the staff.

During our trips we shall fi nd lots of “BARLINES” that split the staff in separate spaces called “BARS” or “MEASURES”

Immediately after the treble clef at the beginning of each new piece of music you’ll always fi nd a “TIME SIGNATURE” that tells you how many equal “beats” make up the measure.
