MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “Construction is your business. Finding work is crucial. As a top priority in 2019, the recently upgraded BuildWorks, our online procurement system, gave our members, designers, and owners further advantages in their markets.”

In challenging economic times, 2019 has been a stable year for the ECA. As we build our future together, we are working to define ourselves as the Hub of Construction Excellence in our region. With a thriving YBG, over 6,000 opportunities available for bidding, and exceptional education programs, we work for continuous improvement. In Education, we saw 20% of our member firms participating in 8,345 hours of learning - showing a strong commitment from our member firms to enhance their employees’ capacities for success. People power our firms but, the threat for us all is in ignoring professional growth and “soldiering on” without improvement. Construction is your business. Finding work is crucial. As a top priority in 2019, the recently upgraded BuildWorks, our online procurement system, gave our members, designers, and owners further advantages in their markets. This enhanced system now includes a directory listing which allows you to include your CSI codes and deeper information; so, you can be found online with your projects, qualifications, and reputation - visible and searchable for all your key relationships with buyers, sellers, and other potential opportunities. We enhanced your pre-bid information for business development that will help you to be prepared and positioned for upcoming work. Pre-bid will also assist you in your relationships with fellow members who are construction owners or designers. To these groups, we are saying, “help us help you – let’s work together by sharing information with one another as exposure creates value for all.” BuildWorks On Demand is your “one-stop shop” for construction opportunities, with a growing number of private owners posting their projects. In addition, many general contractors and major subs are now using On Demand for private bid invitations, with members of the ECA prominently advertised on the public directory. These members are then easily added to private invitation lists for future projects.

HUB OF CONSTRUCTION

In 2020, we will strengthen our Public and Private Owner Affirmation Program that will identify and celebrate top-performing owners in our community, based on member feedback. Board-to-board collaboration with the Consulting Architects of Alberta (CAA), the Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA), NAIOP, BOMA, The Edmonton Chamber and Edmonton City Council will continue to be strong. Our focus on engagement will also be felt in the YBG – our group for people in the first half of their construction careers - now over 1300 strong. Through a continued emphasis on having YBG “believers” in each of our member firms we will support the “up and comers” of our industry. Is it time to get your firm more involved in the YBG? Thank you for your participation in the ECA community, and for your ethical standards that elevate the reputation of our whole industry. I’m also thankful for our Chair, Trevor Doucette, who leads our board, attends countless meetings and provides strong, wise leadership. Finally, thanks to the ECA Board and Staff for their service and dedication. I invite you to read this report and celebrate your own contribution to the success of 2019. In all the challenges of 2020, we’ll be with you every step of the way – just like we have been for over 100 years. Sincerely,

John McNicoll ECA Executive Director

ECA AS THE HUB OF CONSTRUCTION EXCELLENCE A recent goal of the Edmonton Construction Association has been to broaden our ring of inclusivity, bringing more diversity and engagement to the stakeholder table, and welcoming all members of the industry to take part in the future of construction in Edmonton. We want to bridge the gaps and break down the silos that used to divide Edmonton’s construction sector. The ECA aspires to serve and enable our community to constantly innovate and improve. Our Vision is to see the ECA as a Hub of Construction Excellence in the Edmonton Region. Thanks for your commitment and contribution to this pursuit of excellence in your everyday work!

EDUCATION

14

HUB OF CONSTRUCTION

We bring in leading experts to make sure your team is up to date and knowledgeable about all things construction.

SUMMARY Approximately 800 learners participated in 91 courses at ECA in the last calendar year. The over 7,200 learner hours that we achieved is phenomenal. Special thanks to all those firms who continue to engage with the ECA to educate their teams.

LEARNING HOURS UP 25% IN 2019: ECA learning hours increased significantly in 2019. The main reason for the growth in instructional hours was the offering of select specialized courses, including the City of Edmonton’s Construction Management Course (new), Digital Project Delivery (new) and the Canadian Leadership Institute. Other new courses that had successful launches in 2019 were: Understanding the Builders Lien Act, Non-Standard Contract Clauses and Getting Invited to the Party. We thank our primary instructors for their efforts: Phil Perry, Sami Fahmy and Debbie Hicks.

SCHOLARSHIPS Every year, 74 recipients are awarded nearly $100,000 in ECA scholarships. These are awarded through agreements with NAIT, U of A, and the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Trades Board (AAITB). We are also pleased to offer congratulations to the 2019 ECA Member Scholarship honorees. Each year, we recognize the achievements of up to five students whose parents are employed by ECA Member firms. Each recipient is awarded $2,500. In 2019 the following received the scholarship: Brett Ambrozic – Trade Contractor – Scorpio Masonry Rachael Hansen – General Contractor – Fillmore Ethan Currie – M & S - Expocrete Concrete Products Christina Benvenuto – Architect- Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd. Alan Samycia – Trade Contractor – Desco Coatings of Alberta Ltd.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR IN 2020 1. In 2020, we intend to continue to grow the course offerings and number of learners at the ECA. This will include several new offerings, as well as the introduction of our new instructor Izzy Perry, who will be launching a series of Microsoft focused courses. 2. Together with Holo-Blok, we have restructured the format in which our Digital Project Delivery (DPD) course. As BIM/DPD/VDC usage continues to grow, the ECA is working to educating firms on the best practices your teams need to perform confidently in this new building environment. Coming Spring 2020! 3. The 2020 Canadian Leadership Institute will again take place in June in Kananaskis. Designed for emerging and senior leaders, the CLI leads participants through a battery of assessment tools, leadership simulations, and personal feedback sessions designed to give insight into your unique leadership style. Participants come out of the CLI re-energized, re-engaged, and confident about their path forward as leaders. The CLI is also supported by the Canada-Alberta Job Grant, making this assessment cost effective for interested members. 4. The ECA team will continue to focus on the growth and promotion of all those course offerings that benefit members, from construction focused courses, to business and finance focused, to technology focused content.

YBG 16

HUB OF CONSTRUCTION

FIVE YEARS STRONG In 2019, the YBG celebrated five years of engaging those in the first half of their career. Since the YBG was launched in February 2014, it has grown to over 1,300 members, and hosted a multitude of successful events – maximizing business connections for members. The objective of the YBG is to promote the growth and development of construction leaders in the first half of their careers. This is achieved through networking, deepening industry connections, and developing industry leadership skills, with the goal of strengthening the construction industry in Edmonton for the next generation. New initiatives that gained steam in 2019 included YP Merge, YBG Facetime, and the YBG Amazing Race. Other major events, such as our Hub Nights, the Golf Tournament, and SHIFT continued to promote our brand to both members and external stakeholders. The drive for synergies between the YBG and broader ECA missions continued to point the way forward in exciting and innovative directions. YBG initiatives are organized by three main committees: the YBG Networking Committee, the YBG Education Committee, and the YBG Industry Collaboration committee. These committees make recommendations to the YBG Leadership Team, which then approves these initiatives in consultation with the ECA Board of Directors. Remember: the YBG is open to all employees of ECA member firms. Join the Phenomenon!

The Professional Estimating Group is one of ECA’s fastest growing groups, and it’s no surprise why. 2019 was filled with events that were not only interesting and informative, but fun— and the people are pretty great too!

GAINING MOMENTUM No job in this industry is simple, and that’s especially true for project estimators, specification writers, quantity surveyors, and project managers who work hard to keep the project pipeline full. These valuable leaders are often confined to offices in high pressure situations, and don’t have the opportunity that some in the industry do to network with their peers. It is here where the idea of the Professional Estimating Group (PEG) came to fruition. Now entering its third full year, the PEG focuses on networking, mentoring, and professional-development events that serve to cultivate the business relationships and friendships that every PEG professional needs to excel in their work. 2019 saw the PEG group grow in size to over 320 members; a 20% increase from 2018. 2019 featured 5 events for PEG members, including our Estimators Fair, PEG Kick Off, Golf Tournament, and 2 PEG Nights. The Leadership Team looks forward to building off of this momentum, and to making 2020 the best year yet. Remember: the PEG is open to all employees of ECA member firms and is free to join. YP MERGE YP Merge brings together young professionals from across the owner, developer, design and contractor community to network and collaborate.

WHAT IS YP MERGE? YP Merge is a round-table initiative, it’s a calendar, and it’s the creative spark that’s changing the future of construction in the Edmonton region. Launched in late 2017, YP Merge seeks to engage young professional (YP) groups from the Edmonton owner, developer, design and contractor networks while ensuring like-minded professionals can learn and grow with each other. 2019 was a transformative year for YP Merge, as YP merge partners presented the SHIFT Conference together for the first time. Entitled “Inspiring Innovation”, the 2019 SHIFT Conference sold out, bringing together over 180 leaders from over a dozen YP partner groups. Heading into 2020, the YP Merge Leadership Team looks forward to presenting three common events, as the group continues to expand.

THE YP MERGE CALENDAR The YP Merge Calendar makes it possible, for the first time, to be tuned-in to all builder-centric YP groups in Edmonton through a shared event calendar and social media portal. Nearly 3,000 unique individuals visited the website in 2019, and we look forward to continued growth in 2020.

Without our sponsors, nothing that we do would be possible.

THANK YOU In 2019, the ECA hosted more than 30 industry, networking, and stakeholder engagement events, with around 4,500 people taking part. Great events are one of the key ways that we fulfill our promise to be the “hub of construction excellence,” by presenting opportunities for you to expand and strengthen your business network. ECA has earned a reputation for outstanding, creative, and energetic events – and we share credit with our dozens of generous and dedicated sponsors.
