EDUCATION We at the ECA value Education and the importance that knowledge brings to the industry. This past year, approximately 600 learners participated in 130 courses for a total of over 3,000 learner hours. ONLINE LEARNING TO BECOME THE NEW NORMAL Online learning has allowed for the continuation and a cumulative total of over 3000 learner hours in 2020. Special thanks to all those firms who continue to engage with the ECA to educate their teams. This past fall, the ECA alongside Holoblok was pleased to host Digital Project Delivery : Day 1 Beyond BIM with All Project Stakeholders. Roddy Handa and his team of industry leaders delivered this program online and educated 20 students over the span of four days. The ECA also partnered with FMI to launch our first ever Emerging Leaders Institute. In this session, 21 industry leaders were virtually guided through extensive training focused on communication skills and what it means to be a leader. The two flagship courses demonstrated so successful that both of these sessions will be offered again in 2021. We thank our primary instructors for their efforts: Debbie Hicks, Morgan Garry, Phil Perry, and, Sami Fahmy. SCHOLARSHIPS Every year, 74 recipients are awarded nearly $100,000 in ECA scholarships. These are awarded through agreements with NAIT, U of A, and the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Trades Board (AAITB). We are also pleased to offer congratulations to the 2020 ECA Member Scholarship honorees. Each year, we recognize the achievements of four students whose parents are employed by ECA Member firms. Each recipient is awarded $2,500. In 2020 the following received the scholarship: Zoya Bootwala – Kasian Architecture – Associate, Reegan Broadbent – Territorial Electric – Trade Contractor, Reece Devlin – McLennan Ross LLP – Associate, Natalie Hansen – Fillmore Construction – General Contractor.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR IN 2021 We intend to continue to grow the course offerings and number of learners at the ECA. We will continue to offer Virtual Instructor Lead Training until in-person learning becomes available again. This will include several new offerings while continuing to grow the Digital Project Delivery, Emerging Leaders Institute and The Canadian Leadership Institute. The ECA is always working to educate firms on the best practices your teams need to perform confidently in this new building environment. The Canadian Leadership Institute will take place in the fall of 2021. Designed for senior leaders, the CLI leads participants through a battery of assessment tools, leadership simulations, and personal feedback sessions designed to give insight into your unique leadership style. Participants come out of the CLI re-energized, re-engaged, and confident about their path forward as leaders. The CLI is also supported by the Canada-Alberta Job Grant, making this assessment cost effective for interested members.

YBG In 2020, the YBG celebrated six years of engaging those in the first half of their career. Since the YBG was launched in February 2014, it has grown to over 1,300 members, and hosted a multitude of successful events – maximizing business connections for members. The objective of the YBG is to promote the growth and development of construction leaders in the first half of their careers. This is achieved through networking, deepening industry connections, and developing industry leadership skills, with the goal of strengthening the construction industry in Edmonton for the next generation. The drive for synergies between the YBG and broader ECA missions continued to point the way forward in exciting and innovative directions. YBG initiatives are organized by three main committees: the YBG Networking Committee, the YBG Education Committee, and the YBG Industry Collaboration committee. These committees make recommendations to the YBG Leadership Team, which then approves these initiatives in consultation with the ECA Board of Directors. Remember: the YBG is open to all employees of ECA member firms. PEG Professional Estimating Group – PEG in 2020 No job in this industry is simple, and that is especially true for project estimators, specification writers, quantity surveyors, and project managers who work hard to keep the project pipeline full. These valuable leaders are often confined to offices in high pressure situations, and don’t have the opportunity that some in the industry do to network with their peers. It is here where the idea of the Professional Estimating Group (PEG) came to fruition. Now entering its fourth full year, the PEG focuses on networking, mentoring, and professional-development events that serve to cultivate the business relationships and friendships that every PEG professional needs to excel in their work. 2020 and the pandemic presented a challenge for PEG events, but the group was resilient and still managed to host 2 strong events, including a nearly sold-out Golf Tournament in August. The Leadership Team looks forward to brighter days in 2021. Remember: the PEG is open to all employees of ECA member firms and is free to join. YP MERGE What is YP Merge? YP Merge is a round-table initiative, it’s a calendar, and it’s the creative spark that’s changing the future of construction in the Edmonton region. Launched in late 2017, YP Merge seeks to engage young professional (YP) groups from the Edmonton owner, developer, design and contractor networks while ensuring like-minded professionals can learn and grow with each other. 2020 was a strong year for YP Merge, highlighted by our virtual SHIFT conference in late October. Entitled “Build Back Better – Building a Purpose Driven Organization”, the 2020 SHIFT Conference brought together some 150 participants from several YP partner groups. Heading into 2021, the YP Merge Leadership Team looks forward to presenting three common events, as the group continues to expand. The YP Merge Calendar The YP Merge Calendar makes it possible, for the first time, to be tuned-in to all buildercentric YP groups in Edmonton through a shared event calendar and social media portal. Nearly 3,000 unique individuals visited the website in 2020, and we look forward to continued growth in 2021. Learn more at www.ypmerge.ca.
