BUILDWORKS The ECA, in partnership with our local construction association partners, are pleased to present our BuildWorks totals for 2021. Although 2021 was a year of continued challenge, we also saw renewed optimism after a very challenging 2020. We know this pandemic has tested our industry’s resolve, whether because of covid protocols, site requirements, supply chain and labour challenges, or other trials, but members continue to be resilient, adaptable, and progressive in the ways we do business. Total BuildWorks project count across the province remained stable in 2021, while our team worked diligently to continue to provide both Pre-Bid and Private Project opportunities to interested members. Finally, our team continues to thank owners for working directly with our teams to provide detailed bidders lists and well as estimated construction values – both of which as critical to our members’ success.

EDUCATION Education continues to be one of our most sought after and important member benefits. This past year, we have had approximately 1000 learners participate in over 375 courses to invest in their learning. Although COVID-19 continued to challenge our industry, this did not stop our leaders from exploring new topics related to construction, including our Carbon Reduction and Social Procurement sessions. VIRTUAL INSTRUCTOR LEAD TRAINING AND HYBRING LEARNING MODELS The transition to online learning has allowed the break down of geographical barriers in that we are now able to offer more courses, at various times, across multiple LCA’s. As a result, we continue to see an increase in the number of courses we can offer. Online learning has allowed for the continuation of education and accounts for a cumulative total of over 2575 learner hours. Having the ability to reach a multitude of sectors within the industry, online learning is something that has changed the way in which knowledge is delivered. Special thanks to all those firms who continue to engage with the ECA to educate their teams. We thank our primary instructors for their efforts: Phil Perry, Izzy Perry, Sami Fahmy, Lee Kelly, Morgan Garry, James Johnston, and Debbie Hicks. SCHOLARSHIPS In 2021 the Edmonton Construction Association was pleased to increase its yearly scholarship donations by $52,000 awarding nearly $145,000 in ECA scholarships to roughly 120 recipients. These are awarded through agreements with NAIT, U of A, and the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Trades Board (AAITB). We are also pleased to offer congratulations to the 2021 ECA Member Scholarship honorees. Each year, we recognize the achievements of four students whose parents are employed by ECA Member firms. Each recipient is awarded $2,500. In 2021 the following received the scholarship: Kaitlyn Benvenuto – Kasian Architecture, Alan Liang – Rolling Mix Concrete (Edmonton) LTD, Madilyn Portas – PCL Construction Management Inc, Amie Maloney – Legacy Equipment.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR IN 2022 In 2022, The Edmonton Construction Association will continue to grow the course offerings and number of learners. We will continue to offer virtual instructor-lead training and hybrid learning models until restrictions allow for a return to greater in-person learning. This will include several new offerings, while continuing to grow the Digital Project Delivery, the Emerging Leaders Institute, The Canadian Leadership Institute, Project Management Preparation (PMP) and CM Lean Exam Prep. The ECA is always working to educate firms on the best practices your teams need to perform confidently in this new building environment.

MEMBERSHIP The ECA’s membership remained strong in 2021. Total membership at the conclusion of the year was 1,058 member firms. Membership in the ECA means joining 247 General Contractors, 242 Manufacturer and Suppliers, and 463 Trades that made up our membership in 2020. Added to these numbers were the 106 Associate Members which are made up of the Architects, Engineers, Consultants, and Owners from our industry. The ECA exists to ensure that everyone in Edmonton’s construction industry is on a level playing field – our goal is that every member can find something of value to their company and career. Our members experience greater business success as a result of the ECA’s collective and focused portfolio of highly valued services and programs, as well as being equipped and supported by the ECA. YBG In 2021, the YBG celebrated seven years of engaging those in the first half of their career. Since the YBG was launched in February 2014, it has grown to over 1,300 members, and hosted a multitude of successful events – maximizing business connections for members. The objective of the YBG is to promote the growth and development of construction leaders in the first half of their careers. This is achieved through networking, deepening industry connections, and developing industry leadership skills, with the goal of strengthening the construction industry in Edmonton for the next generation. The drive for synergies between the YBG and broader ECA missions continued to point the way forward in exciting and innovative directions. YBG initiatives are organized by three main committees: the YBG Networking Committee, the YBG Education Committee, and the YBG Industry Collaboration committee. These committees make recommendations to the YBG Leadership Team, which then approves these initiatives in consultation with the ECA Board of Directors. Remember: the YBG is open to all employees of ECA member firms. Join the phenomenon! 2021 YBG Leadership Team Ben Aitchison

WOMENBUILD The ECA’s WomenBuild group is an open group – the goals are focused on inspiring, supporting, encouraging, connecting, and celebrating women in industry. A distinct goal is to enable mentoring opportunities for women. We also want to encourage and open the construction industry to women and young girls who previously may not have considered it a career option. In Alberta, women make up 45% and men make up 55% of the overall workforce. Within in the construction industry in Alberta, women make up 14% and men make up 86% (AB Labour Force Survey). Specifically, women make up only 5% of the labour force in the trades. Women are underrepresented in our industry. Women are also underrepresented in leadership positions and operations (PM, estimators, etc.) And to top it off, we still do not have a strong pipeline of women being trained in construction related disciplines like engineering and trades / technical school. WomenBuild is a place to provide inspiration, support, and mentorship to women. As well, this helps us connect even further with our member firms. The WomenBuild events are meant to connect, inspire, support, and celebrate women in industry In 2021 we brought together a total of over 200 women both virtually and in person; • WomenBuild – Your Pathway to the industry • WomenBuild Nine & Dine • WomenBuild Speaker Series For more information or to sign up for WomenBuild please contact Caroline Bowen, caroline. bowen@edmca.com.

YP MERGE What is YP Merge? YP Merge is a round-table initiative, it’s a calendar, and it’s the creative spark that’s changing the future of construction in the Edmonton region. Launched in late 2017, YP Merge seeks to engage young professional (YP) groups from the Edmonton owner, developer, design and contractor networks while ensuring like-minded professionals can learn and grow with each other. We hope that 2022 means a strong return for YP Merge after two challenging years related to COVID, highlighted by our virtual SHIFT conference in October 2022. The YP Merge Calendar The YP Merge Calendar makes it possible to be tuned-in to all builder-centric YP groups in Edmonton through a shared event calendar and social media portal. Nearly 3,000 unique individuals visit the website every year, and we look forward to continued growth in 2022. Learn more at www.ypmerge.ca.
