or this issue, we wanted to present to our readers some people you should all keep an eye out for… Something we like to call the Freshmen 15. Now, we've all heard that term before, but it's usually described as the “15 pounds that students gain as a freshman in college.” We've twisted that and given it a new meaning. We've come up with 15 different up and coming artists that have taken our scene by storm, and all before the age of 30. So it makes one wonder, “How did they do it?” Motivation and determination are definitely the 2 key phrases for how they accomplished reaching their dreams at such a young age. Reaching your dreams is in your hands, you just have to believe in yourself and work your butts off in order to do it. Our generation is fully capable of becoming successful entrepreneurs before the age of even 25! It's incredible seeing the success of people we went to school with, or have the pleasure of meeting. So it's not too crazy to tell you that YOU can do it too. If you have any dreams or goals, don't sell yourself short. Don't stop until you've reached your dreams, no matter how long it may take you. If you want to become a famous DJ like Aviici, keep working at your music! If you want to throw crazy festivals like Pasquale Rotella, start small and think big. Nothing is impossible, and we at EDM Magazine want you to know that we support all of your dreams and would love to see you all make it big!

WEEKLYNEWS Paris Hilton Signs With Cash Money Records, Will Release House Music Album "Soon”

James Barton, Perry Farrell, Marc Geiger, Rob Light and Pasquale Rotella lead a group of EDMBiz speakers

Now in its second year, the EDMBiz conference’s purpose is to promote and facilitate thoughtful discussion on topics relevant to dance music culture. At this year’s conference there will also be a comprehensive schedule of panel discussions, keynote speeches from James Barton, Perry Farrell, Marc Geiger, Rob Light, and Pasquale Rotella among others and promises to be a unique and thought-provoking experience. In addition to the seminars, guests will also enjoy networking events at The Cosmopolitan during EDC Week, June 18-20 2013. Attendees will also have access to nightclub parties at Marquee, TAO, Lavo and more. Read more info on the keynote speeches after the break. This year’s keynotes will include a conversation with CAA Managing Partner and Head of Worldwide Music Rob Light. Rob will discuss CAA’s global EDM strategy, its relevance to the agency’s film and TV business, and the Daft Punk effect. Another keynote will be a conversation between Marc Geiger (head of William Morris Endeavor’s music division) and Perry Farrell. During their session the two will reflect on their collaboration as co-creators of the game-changing festival “Lollapalooza” in 1991. These two pioneers will offer insight into the progression of electronic dance music by recalling their own experiences and engaging the audience in an open discussion about the genre’s effect on the modern music scene. “I was most impressed with the quality of discourse and participation last year. People came ready to learn and contribute to the growth of the scene,” said returning host and co-curator Jason Bentley. “There were big thinkers and big ideas in the room. People come to EDMbiz to make a difference.”

T

he “multi-talented” Paris Hilton has just announced that she will be releasing a full album of house music tracks via Cash Money Records sometime this summer! Could this album outshine Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories? Only time will tell. The heiress, who is best known for her superb acting chops (and creepy night vision eyes), reportedly broke the news to Showbiz411 at a party in Cannes. According to the gossip blog, it is likely that Hilton will be signing on with Cash Money subsidiary Young Money Entertainment to release her latest musical trainwreck. She also claims that Afrojack has been helping her produce the album – a rumor that has been floating around the blogosphere since she made her more-than-stellar DJ debut. Dancing Astronaut’s suggestion for enjoying Paris’s latest publicity stunt? Grab some popcorn and puncture your eardrums.

“On the one hand EDMbiz is about creating business opportunities, learning and networking, but on the other hand it’s also about discussing the steps the industry must take to preserve the unique elements of dance music events that make them so special,” said Pasquale Rotella, CEO and founder of Insomniac. “We place a lot of focus on the fans and their voice will be heard at this year’s conference alongside artists, visionaries, and executives.” EDMbiz has added mentoring sessions with top industry professionals and small-forum breakout discussions that will give aspiring newcomers an opportunity to engage industry leaders directly. Also planned is the first EDM uber-fan panel, the launch of the SkyLight project to promote the advancement of women in the business of dance music founded by Stephanie LaFera (owner of Little Empire Music) and Kerri Mason (dance music journalist and Billboard contributor), and the third meeting of industry advocacy group, the Association For Electronic Music, founded by Ben Turner (director of Graphite) and attorney Kurosh Nasseri. Dancing Astronaut‘s own CEO, Senthil Chidambaram, will also be attending as a guest panelist.

lthough the highlight of the Billboard Music Awards may have been Miguel’s leg drop on an unsuspecting fan, dance music mainstays David Guetta, Skrillex and Baauer all took home awards for Best EDM Artist, Best EDM Album, Best EDM Song and Best Dance Song before the night was over. Not suprisingly David Guetta took home the Best EDM Artist award, acknowledging in his speech that; “When they put me on the cover four years ago and said EDM would be big, I thought ‘these guys are crazy – this will never happen.’ Imagine how I feel today.” Skrillex took home the award for Best EDM Album while viral-sensation Baauer won both Best EDM Song and Best Dance Song – bringing the “Harlem Shake” legacy full circle with two awards.

rmin Van Buuren has been consistently delivering excellence throughout his albums, and his fifth is no exception. “Intense” was released just May 3rd of 2013, and already one of his tracks featuring Trevor Guthrie, “This Is What It Feels Like”, has become a memorable sing-along for the massive crowds attending his shows. His North American Tour that began in Los Angeles has been an explosive success for the album, and the show at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California was stellar, to say the least. “Intense” is a 16-track album that's already gained a sweeping success. Completed and released after a long-prepared, 3-year process of the inner workings of Armin's talent, this album speaks to the masses with more than just chorus lines, but the stuff that makes Armin Van Buuren's work so uniquely flawless. Not only does this album have very different surprises to it, such as featured music from a violinist named Miri Ben-Ari, but it also has an underlying sense of liberation from the standard genres of EDM. Many different sounds can be heard in “Intense“, making it an album that's bound to stand out, and in the best way possible. This album is big, and there's no denying it. “Waiting for the Night” featuring Fiora was released prior to the album on January 21st, 2013, and was the anthem to the movie "Verliefd op Ibiza" (In Love With Ibiza). “This Is What It Feels Like” gained a huge remix from W&W that claimed a spot on the Beatport Top 100 charts. And this is just the beginning. The noise about this album can only be measured in the passion of the living moment though, during Armin's tour in honor of “Intense”. EDM Magazine had the pleasure to see for ourselves, and the sold out show in Oakland, California was certainly all the convincing needed to believe in “Intense”. With a performance from the featured vocals Trevor Guthrie, Laura Jansen, Lauren Evans and the excited and passionate interaction Armin had with the crowd, it was a perfect way to introduce the album that lives up to its name. Every seat was filled, the floor was packed, and the energy was overwhelming. No doubt Oakland was given the grand presentation of Armin's freshest tracks, and with “Intense” able to gain such a strong and positive reaction such as the one witnessed at the Fox Theater, there's a seemingly bright future for the prosperity of this album.

Part of what makes “Intense” so good is the collaborations that have been effortlessly combined in this album. With NERVO, Fiora, Cindy Alma, Laura Jansen, Aruna, and others mixed in with Armin's genius, there are too many good vocals. And this makes for tracks that the crowd can follow, and can love. The Fox was booming with the voices of trance and dance lovers that already know the words to “Intense”, proving that if just a few weeks is enough for “Intense” to be a trailblazer of an album, there is plenty more stardom for these tracks to come. Armin Van Buuren has created a refreshing album in the midst of his music career that proves he has a whole lot to offer. But did anyone really need reassurance of Armin's greatness? Not really. But “Intense” is simply further proof that Armin fans are happy to have. And if you haven't heard any tracks from it yet, you're bound to soon enough because this album, as well as the tour, is nothing short of massive praise.

Krewella asmine, Jahan, and Rainman are the individuals that make up the group better known as the Chicago trio, Krewella. This unstoppable force has been killin' it worldwide. The Krew recently debuted their hit single “Alive,” which has been topping dance charts nation-wide. The past couple of years, this young powerful trio have been rising to the top and they don't see the limits. 2012 has been a huge successful year for them as they played festivals all over, and 2013 is proving to be yet another year for the books. Most recently, they played both weekends of Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida; this was their first time playing UMF, so this made for a huge breakthrough for the Krew.

They came out with a live show, with Yasmine and Jahan on vocals, and Rainman on the decks with Yasmine and Jahan occasionally helping out. This fiercely energetic show streamed worldwide got a lot of notice. All of the success led to their winning of the IDMA's award for 'Best Breakthrough Artist,' which has been an incredible award for them. Their hits have reached major radio stations and even featured in TV commercials. The trio treats each other as family, and they equally split all of the work. This is great because sometimes in duos or trios one person does a majority of the work. The Krew's success has been immense, and 2013 will be an even bigger year for them. We can't wait to see how they'll make us feel alive this year. All of them being extremely young, with Yasmine just recently hitting 21, they have successfully made all of us wet, one song at a time.

Describing her genre as “all things bass” it can be said without a doubt that you should expect some heavy bass lines and crazy drops from this lady of bass. Starting her musical journey at 16, B. Traits always knew she wanted to be a DJ, always listening to genres such as 2 step, jungle, and drum n bass. When she relocated herself to Vancouver at the age of 18, she was able to start playing in clubs such as Automatic, a drum n bass club night in Canada. She was soon being booked to play venues throughout North America and Europe. After being exposed on the World of Drum n' Bass tour in 2006, she caught the attention of Shy FX, who is the founder of Digital Soundboy. She was soon signed on to his label and since then skyrocketed. Now that she has developed her own production style, she has definitely created one of the most unique sounds in the drum n' bass world; incorporating everything from jungle to dubstep, drum n' bass to hip hop, her sound is one that will capture your attention and have you rocking out.

So why should it be any different for artis ts that give us the tracks that make us dance? Australian duo Slice n Dice like the intrigue… They like making people ques tion “who's behind the masks?” With that said, unfortunately for our readers and their fans, they will always remain anon ymous; no one will ever know the guys behind the masks, but that's ok! What we can tell you is that they are both young, very talented individuals and they definitely bring it with every set that they play. Their track “Robots Like to Have Sex” busted through from the land down under and made their way to explode internationally, hitting the Beatport Elec tro House chart at #51. “Robots Like to Have Sex” caught the ears of artists like Chuckie, Borgore, and Lazy Rich, who have supported the duo and played the track in their many sets . Soon after, Slice n Dice ranked #41 in the ITM Top 50 Nati onal DJ Awards in Australia, which was a massive achievem ent being only a year old as an electro house duo. ately there have been a lot of runs for different causes. Not many of them have had “fun” as their main cause. Each one of them has their own little twist and Color Me Rad is no exception. Doing a 5k run doesn't sound very pleasing to the normal every day Joe but throw in clouds of color, music, paint, and color bombs with friends and family, topped off with dancing and you've got all the motivation in the world to come out to one of their 5k's. For those that aren't math savvy, a 5k is the equivalent of a 3.1 mile run. Why would anyone want to run this long for fun? That's just it. Unless it's for a good cause or physical health, most people would not run a 5k. Color Me Rad took this into consideration when they put their twist on this event; it's not a race, it's more of a family gathering that's both fun and healthy. Imagine this; you start the day with a nice shower. Put on a nice clean white shirt and you're looking fresh. You go to Color Me Rad to run this 5k, with no idea what to expect. Along the way, you are blasted and coated with clouds of colored corn starch and paint. As you run through the course, there is no dodging what you have coming to you, and as an end result, you come out looking like a tye-dye'd avatar. They use all the colors of the rainbow including some of your favorites such as: blue, green, purple, orange and yellow. At the end, you are greeted with snacks and photos and pats on the back. Warning: some pats on the back may include a handful of color that blasts you with a cloud of epicness. After you catch your breath and are free of being blasted with color, (or so you thought), there is a stage with some good music playing and dancing that you can partake in. Every 15-20 minutes, the crowd is given handfuls of color and told to hold on to it. As the countdown makes its way from 10-0, hold your breath and jump. Different colors left and right are tossed into the air for all to see. It's quite the array of beauty as you see your friends engulfed in an incredible massive cloud of, well, color. It's not something you see every day.

With color bombs flying left and right, this is the only field of bombs you'll actually want to be in. If you've had too much fun for one day, you can grab a bite to eat or something to drink from one of the vendors off to the side in a separate field. Also, there is some rad gear that you can check out to show off to all your lame friends who were too lazy to have a good time with you! Not only are color bombs being launched every 15-20 minutes by the stage, they also do a lot of contests, one of those contests being pie eating. A picture is worth a thousand words, so enjoy the pie in your face! With waves of thousands at a time running in each race, and an average of $30 per entry, you've got to be wondering about how much money is made. Color Me Rad donates a good portion of their collections to a local charity. Depending on which town they are in, the charity varies. So don't worry, you are running for a good cause, as well as a fun cause. Thanks again to the Color Me Rad team for setting us up to enjoy the wonderful experience! Hopefully you all can experience this for yourselves, because no matter how well we explain the beauty and fun of this event, or how many pictures we show you, you'll just have to be engulfed in a beautiful cloud of color with your friends and family to truly experience the wonder of this rad 5k!

t 34 12' N latitude and 116 14' W longitude, awaits a portal into the enchanting realm of Joshua Tree Music Festival. This year marks the festival's 11th annual celebration of music, magic dance and desert. Independently produced, the canon of Joshua Tree festival life is, “the desert is freedom, music is power and community is crucial.“ It is far more than just a party in the desert, it is a second home, a utopic microcosm created by our auras, for our auras. A place of fire-spinning, rainbow chasing and desert stomping; a place to bond and connect, fall in love and reignite flames; a place for you, a place for me, and most importantly, a place for us. All of us.With two festivals a year, the other being in October, the spring festival focuses on dance, electro, world, funk, soul and groove while the fall festival concentrates on roots, Americana and folkadelic. This year's spring lineup consisted of several eclectic and talented underground musicians from all corners of our planet, each emanating their own multi-faceted vibe. Friday night, Oakland natives Bang Data vibrated our innards with unique sounds that fused Latin alternative, electro, bossanova, samba, ska, cumbia, synth and the always necessary heavy hitting bass. With spicy melodies and velvety Spanish lyrics, Bang Data's beats had toes twinkling and hips gyrating. Closing up Friday evening was The Egg. Hailing from the United Kingdom, The Egg provided us with Pink Floyd, Underworld and New Order inspired sounds. The stunning visuals tickled our optical nerves, the funky disco beats with live vocoded vocals pulsed through our ear canals, and the electronic rhythms with live instruments had everyone stomping the desert floor so wildly that even the Joshua Trees were dancing. Our next door tent neighbors in the backstage campsite were Los Angeles natives Mexico68 who provided us with polyrhythmic drum circles open to all willing participants. We missed their performance on Sunday, but all percussion and brass, their Afrobeat vibes and Chicano funk provided the soundtrack to our adventures in campsite city. Resting our weary bones in the Boogaloo Saloon backstage, we strike up a conversation with two gents sitting beside us. We discover that they are members of Saturday's headliners, Papadosio, who will also be performing at Lightning in a Bottle in July. Friendly, interesting, and humble, we exchanged vibes and enjoyed each other's company, an opportunity rarely presented at most music festivals. Before Papadosio, we catch The Main Squeeze, a soulful funk voyage with eargasmic rhythms that send us to the peaks of dance floor ecstasy. Utilizing global sounds, poignant vocals, groovy melodies and shredding solos, The Main Squeeze was definitely one of the musical highlights of the entire weekend. Soaring high on the legal and naturally occurring drug we call music, we await the next act: Papadosio. Papadosio's live electronica beats and tales of transcendence had the crowd dancing beyond the physical plane and into the astral plane. These universal travelers advocated human harmony through vocal harmony, electrifying our souls and exciting our brains. Having bonded with them as equals and then connecting with them as audience members made their performance feel personal and intimate.

On Sunday night, Ganga Giri from Australia closed up the festival with their tribal pulsations and funky grimy bass. From deep earthy beats to didgeri-dubstep, Ganga Giri merged their Australian musical heritage with heavy rhythms that kept us dancing and twirling into the sunset. A picturesque conclusion to this Technicolor dreamscape. As the dust settles and feet rest, we wander to the Boogaloo. Apparently our picturesque conclusion was merely a transition, for the after hours was about to begin. The great Apollo set his immaculate orb behind silhouetted mountains as Diana raised her waxing gibbous. Like diamonds on velvet, the almighty Milky Way begins to glitter through the darkening atmosphere. The fire-breathers, fire-hoopers and fire-staffers emblazen the moonlit sky with hues of red, orange and yellow. Light up poi and LED hula hoops leave luminous trails of color in their wake. The freaks come out at night, and here, the freaks are the bells of the ball. With one epic final hoorah, we dance to the magnetic sounds of Globesonic Sound System within the colorfully carpeted Boogaloo Saloon for over five hours straight. Their set begins with a rich remix of Bob Marley's “Get Up, Stand Up” and slowly evolves into a vivacious dance celebration that fuses global music with modern electronic beats and techniques. Fabian, half of Globesonic Sound System's duo, described their sound as stimulating “a deep sense of planetary unity through music and dance.” Music is the soul of life. Joshua Tree Music Festival possesses a halo of energy that resonates through both our physical and astral bodies. There is something eerily beautiful and serene about the high desert, and combining that scenery with the magic of music imbues the landscape with a soul that can be felt for miles and miles. The people are as eclectic as the music and you are not surrounded by strangers you will never meet, but rather family you have yet to meet. To spend a weekend in a utopia that is bringing people together within a world that is constantly being torn apart, is a profound reminder that we may all be alive but we are not all living. While darkness is a presence that will forever haunt mankind, so is light. A new dawn is upon us and music festivals are our sun.

TECH NEWS over every traditional element of the drum's sound. There are also an amazing amount of velocity layers for each drum (up to 96) giving you a vast amount of depth and realism when playing out your patterns. BFD also comes fully equipped with over 5000 grooves to spark some inspiration and a fully functional Cubase-style drum sequencer. It also fully integrates into your existing sequencer as a powerhouse drum module. The new GUI is a welcome sight and is much easier to navigate than previous versions. The Kit page is the default startup screen but there are 4 other s c r e e n s o n b o a r d : t h e M i x e r, Grooves,Keymapping/Automation and Preferences pages.

Big F***ing Drums! W

hen FXpansion named the BFD acoustic drum production workstation, they definitely didn't undersell the “big” aspect of the kit. BFD 2 comes with over 50 gigs of rare, vintage, boutique and classic drum sets. All of these sounds were recorded at the immaculate AIR studios in London, and they spared no expense when it came to detail on this collection of sounds. BFD2 has seen a complete makeover of the GUI and the sample data. Each of the 10 kits included is highly editable with onboard effects, super flexible routing and a plethora of mic positions for each piece in the kit, giving you a virtual access to the AIR studios in your drum productions. We're going to give the BFD2 a run for it's money and see if it really does live up to it's name.

The Rundown Included in the bundle are 10 drum kits and an array of extras including kicks, snares and toms. Each of the pieces of the kits was meticulously recorded with mic positions both inside and outside of the kick, snare tops and bottoms, close room mics and ambient mics. All of these elements of the kit can be tightly controlled via the onboard mixer giving you the most in control

What's In The Kit? On the default kit page you have the ability to load a 10, 18 or 32 piece kit for any drum needs you may have. Each module contains a clear picture of the drum sound, a mute/solo/volume for each module and a button to clear the selected cell. There's also a very useful set of functions down the left hand side of this screen for functions like clearing the entire kit, MIDI note learn and many others. On the upper right hand side of the screen you have all your various controls of the selected cell including Overhead/Room/Ambient mic levels, dampening controls, tuning, dynamics, kick and snare bleeds along with a full line of articulation controls. Below this window there's a chopped down version of the mixer including mic levels, humanize controls and controls for master dynamics and tuning.

everything in between. Get Groovy The BFD2 update showed a considerable update to the groove window, now offering you the ability to load up to 128 grooves at any one time. With over 5000 grooves in the box to choose from, there are many options to help stimulate your writing. This Cubase-style sequencer is easy and straightforward to use and also comes with controls for quantization, simplify, weight, swing and human time/value controls. There's a handy groove palette, which you can drag and drop groove from right into the sequencer to get the desired rhythm you're looking for. Everything Else The MIDI learn feature is definitely handy and accessible on the default page, but for those looking for more there is a MIDI learn page to get much more in depth with your control of the interface. It clearly shows each cell with its respective assignment along with velocity curves and all existing choke slots. There's also a section in the lower right hand corner where you can load existing keymaps. The settings page is pretty straightforward with settings for your default data path and preferences reset. Other tabs in this window offer you settings for grooves, session, MIDI, engine, GUI and health settings.

Bottom Line Although there are a good number of drum machines out that claim to “bring the boom”, it's rare that I actually see one live up to the hype right out of the box. As complex as the interface looks, there's plenty of kits and templates onboard to help you get that booming sound right off the bat. Another great feature of the BFD2 is the ability to purchase one of it's many expansions online, so you'll never have stale sounds. The $299 price tag might not appeal to a lot of people, but with over 50 gigs of Mixology sounds it's definitely a bang well worth the buck. For more info The second page on the BFD2 is a more detailed version of the and to pick up a copy of BFD2, visit www.fxpansion.com. Happy mixer section. The bottom half includes all the traditional fader drumming! controls you would expect to see for each cell including volume faders, mute/solo/record controls and gain controls amongst other controls. On the right side of the bottom of the screen there are volume controls for the mic returns, direct volume and bleed level controls on the mic tab. There's also tabs for the Send controls, preset selection, exporting and kit cell controls. The top of the window offers an extensive number of effects, although they are proprietary to the BFD interface and unfortunately you can't use VST plugins in place of the onboard effects. There are plenty of effects to work with from compressors to distortion and

Mix This With That With the way the DJ scene is developing in the world it seems as though everyone and his or her dog wants to be a DJ. A lot of new talent I'm seeing coming to the DJ field has little or no experience in music production and want that instant gratification that comes with DJ'ing. The problem with this is that people just start DJ'ing and playing the same tracks that everyone else is playing. With this approach you won't get any further than the button pusher sitting next to you less some really hard work in the promotional end of it. If you want to catch their attention behind the decks, one way to do it is by making your own mashups and megamixes to stand out. The problem with this is that it takes a certain amount of production knowhow to construct a proper mashup…until now. The release of Mixed In Key's Mashup will enable even the most novice of producers and DJ's to match and create the most seamless of mashups almost effortlessly. As a matter of fact, the people at Mixed In Key boast that you can create a good sounding mashup in under 5 minutes. Let's take a look.

Instant Gratification Upon pulling tracks into the audio bin, I notice it takes a bit of time for the program to analyze the files. After it completes this task I found out why. The program TELLS you which tracks mix together the best with a Harmonic Compatibility percentage right next to the file. No more guessing at what

will mix well. The program does that for you. Upon dragging the first couple of tracks in I notice that there is no work to do to match the beats. You just drag and align the tracks so the elements come in and out at the right times and presto! There is some end tailoring you can do to the tracks with EQ and volume to make them fit together better, but not much. Through simplicity comes appeal towards the masses that want that “instant fix”. The user interface is very clean and easy to navigate and there are really no huge hang-ups in the learning curve. Plus if you get stuck there is a quick start guide to get you on the right track.

Final Analysis If you're looking for something to get you running out of the box and you have little or no production knowledge, this is the product for you. If you are a seasoned producer and are looking for a feature-packed DAW powerhouse, it's best to look elsewhere. It's my thought that the guys over at Mixed In Key wanted to keep it simple so it didn't lose it's introductory appeal. To me it seems like there will be more to come with updates. Hey, either way at $39 you can't go wrong giving it a shot. If you want to know m o r e a b o u t M a s h u p o r t o p i c k u p y o u r c o p y, g o t o mashup.mixedinkey.com. It's definitely worth a look to make those stellar mashups that stick in people's heads after you're done on the 1's and 2's.

Off The Beaten Path I

f you want to stand out in the electronic music industry, it's always best to do so by breaking the standardized rules. At first glance, even the most novice of synth programmers can tell that Sugar Bytes' Cyclop synth doesn't follow the traditional rules that most synth companies adhere to when making new soft synths. Right off the bat you can definitely tell that the Cyclop is intended to make unearthly wobble sounds. It's dirty and distorted and instantly sounds like a beast right away. The GUI is visually pleasing as well and it was definitely a nice touch to put the video game in the front end. You can tell that Sugar Bytes has a very strong eye for design with this sexy little synth. Let's take a look inside and see what makes this synth tick. A Beast Of Sound The top half of the synth is the modulation and effects area. The bottom half is where you'll find the controls for the synthesizer, audio routing and filters. There are 4 main knobs on the synth that give the most drastic control of the sound. The basic methodology of creating a sound in the Cyclop is by setting your synthesis controls and then setting your modulators. If you haven't realized yet, this synth is all about modulation to give you the most complex and in-yourface sounds you can get. There are 16 assignable controls: 3 synth controls per synth, 3 filter controls per filter, 2 routing controls, master pitch and master level. In between the 2 synthesizers and filters is the routing module, which makes it possible to route them together in a number of ways. The master effects section includes a sub oscillator, bass processor, distortion and stereo imaging. After all of this comes the effects sequencer module. This module combines a 4-track sequencer with loads of effects,

M

ost of the time in the world of synthesis manufacturers are making new and breakthrough synthesizers, which have a distinct intention and thereby have their own distinct sound, which separates them from the rest of the pack. They're either marketed as “the new Dubstep wobble synth” or the “classic recreation of the legendary….” and so on and so forth. With the release of KV331's Synthmaster comes the claim that this synth is a super powerhouse synth with a plethora of features enabling the user to make virtually any sound that they desire. I'm going to put that to the test and see if this little beast is really the Swiss Army Knife of synths that it claims to be.

including phasers, choruses, delays and reverbs. The Source The source of Cyclop's sound comes from 2 oscillators and 1 sine wave generating sub oscillator. The 2 onboard oscillators offer saw regiment, analog sync, FM, transformer, spectromat and phase stressor options. Both can be detuned and both have unison modes as well. After the oscillators, there are 2 filters to mangle the sound even further. Onboard filter types included are Highpass, Bandpass, Bandpass/Lowpass, Lowpass (2-pole), Lowpass (4-pole), Lowpass (Ladder), Midpass, Bandstop, ripple and comb filters. The sound is then routed through the flexible router section, which allows for you to route the filters in parallel, series 1, series 2 and split. Also depending on the configuration on the bottom part of the router you have control of the mix and filter distortion settings. Go Nuts! As we move north to the top half of the synth, this is where the sound gets crazy. You have 4 main knobs to mangle the sound with, as well as an intuitive interface to manipulate everything to your liking. In this section there is a wobble generator, wobble amount, sound and FX knob which aid in varying the respective parameters involved with each of the modules. First up to look at in these modules is the wobble generator, which is the combination of the wobble knob, wobble settings and wobble amount. The wobble knob enables you to choose from 12 LFO speeds and waveforms. With the wobble amount knob you can set an

“A” value and a “B” value in the modulators page and crossfade between those 2 settings. The sound knob works in a similar way in that you set which parameters you want the knob to change in the modulations page. In the FX section there is an effects sequencer section that is very reminiscent of the ever-so-popular Effectrix effects sequencer. You can then go even further with it by automating these 4 knobs via recording a knob motion or drawing it in to the 144-step recorder sequencer pages for these knobs giving you the most options in making the sound move and wobble. In The End I've seen my fair share of innovative boundary breaking products be run through the mill. Sugar Bytes created many of those innovations. They've always been at the forefront of creating something different; something nonconventional. This release is not an exception to that stellar track record. The Cyclop comes out of the gates breaking sonic boundaries and enabling new and outlandish sounds that will keep Dubstep on the cutting edge and open new doors for artists in every genre. You can check out a demo at www.sugar-bytes.de and if it meets your fancy you can pick up a copy of this bad boy for a mere $139. Let's get wobbling!

The Goods The Synthmaster is a semi modular synth that works as a VST or AU plugin. Right off the bat you can see architecture very similar to that of the Sylenth by Lennar Digital. Each preset has 2 layers, each with 2 oscillators in which you can choose from Basic, Additive, Wavescan, Vector, or Audio In types. You have all of your standard controls over the oscillators, including FM, AM, a very cool pitch drift and an amazing sounding unison which can be set up to 8 voices per oscillator and can be spread according to your needs. A nice touch is that when you stack voices in unison it doesn't make your number of total voices decrease. After the layers you have 2 effect busses to sweeten the sound more. You can choose from distortion, LoFi, Compressor, Phaser, Ensemble, 6 Band EQ, Chorus, Tremolo, Echo (Delay), Vocoder and Reverb. There's an onboard Arpeggiator/Sequencer, which can perform up to 32 steps of sequencing. It's monophonic and polyphonic and you can even import your own MIDI files into the sequencer. There are a wide range of modulation sources available, including 4 Keyscalers, 4 ADSR Envelopes, 2 Multistage Envelopes, 2 2D Envelopes, 2 Voice LFO's, MIDI Velocity, Unison Index, Bipolar/Unipolar Random and Alternating. Also included are 4 Global LFO's, 12 Easy Parameters, 16 Vocoder Bands and MIDI Controllers such as Channel Aftertouch and Pitchwheel.

parameter to determine the position of the waveform. The Audio In Oscillator allows for incoming audio to be processed through the synthesizer. There is an onboard envelope follower allowing for the onboard oscillators/filters/effects to process the incoming sound. There is also the option of importing your own samples in SFZ format, making the Synthmaster a fully functional sampler as well. Verdict All in all the Synthmaster definitely lives up to its reputation of being the “go to synth”. It's vast array of features and options leave little to be desired in the world of synthesis, and with it's thick and in-your-face sound you're definitely not compromising sound quality for function. As if all of this wasn't incentive enough to at least give the Synthmaster a try, maybe the miniscule $129 price tag will seal the deal for you. With so many features and a stellar sound, the Synthmaster is definitely a powerhouse of a synth at that price. For more information and a demo version of the Synthmaster, go to www.kv331audio.com.

The Netherlands' Jordy Dazz is following up on “–Bitsize” with a slightly larger tune. Named as the official anthem of Holland's 7th Sunday festival, his latest release “Jumpfold” earned its title with an electro house sound that demands an arena audience. A thoughtful melody tucked between dizzying builds and wide drops with a break that gives even the hardest rager pause, “Jumpfold” has already gained support from the Afrojacks, Bingo Players and Chuckies of Dutch house. Ready to conquer this side of the pond as well, the track is available now on 'Dmitri Vegas & Like MikesSmash The House records.

With an eye on the forthcoming festival season, Italian trio 'Daddys Groove have released their 'Spinnin Records follow-up to “Stellar” in a high energy collaboration with Dino. “Walking on Air” opens with a Boys Noize-esque electro line beneath breathless vocals before escalating into a massive build on the backs of soaring trance synths. While the synth lead sounds eerily similar to “Aerodynamic” by our favorite French robots, the airy vocals lend the track a decidedly distinct vibe. Already sporting support from some of the biggest names in the business, this track appears destined to make a splash this summer.

Premiered back in March on the main stage of Ultra Music Festival, 'Kaskadesnewest single “Atmosphere” has been officially previewed by the man himself via SoundCloud. While Kaskade's productions are well known for featuring the vocals of Haley Gibby and similarly enchanting singers, in a change of pace, Raddon has lent his own voice to “Atmosphere.” With light piano chords and celestial subject matter, “Atmosphere” is sure to win over the hearts of the progressive house world. Stay tuned for its official release on June 10th.

Anjunabeats has released yet another powerful track from Anjunabeats Volume 10, this time in the form of Boom Jinx and Maor Levi's “When You Loved Me.” The Norwegian and Israeli producers use American Ashley Tomberlin's vocals to contrast the devastating trance bass line with a organic bridge and chorus. There's no doubt this is an emotional break-up song, but it's got legs to stand on any dance floor as well.

After a slew of original collaborations including “Signal,” “Mr. Lover,” and “Incredible,”Carnage continues on with his big room metamorphosis on his own rendition of Martin Solveig's latest “Hey Now.” Lending his newfound festival talents to the Frenchman's bouncy summertime vibes, Carnage douses the track's dance-pop aesthetics and sugary-sweet hooks in a tidal wave of thunderous synthwork. The reworked break sets the mix ablaze with Dutch-tinged, heavy electro stabs and pads transforming the candy-coated original into a razorblade-riddled Jolly Rancher – this is one time you should take candy from a stranger.“Hey Now” will be released on May 28th with the official remix package soon to follow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyvFeGNhdIM

LA Riots teams up with fellow Los Angeles producer Hi Deaf to create “Rewind,” a rousing vocally driven electro house outing featuring the sinewy vocal styling of newcomer Jessie Malakouti. Another sound cut from LA Riots, “Rewind” opens powerfully with an anthemic top line and driving synthwork before it deceptively changes gears, dropping into a Dutch-tinged breakdown complete with high-octane horn blasts that kick you in the seat of your pants. Another track poised to define the festival season, “Rewind” has all the ingredients for another runaway hit from the prolific producer and should see its official release later this summer.

Defected Records is launching a new label titled DFTD, with the debut release coming from renowned producer Guti. The vision of the imprint will be to focus on new and undiscovered talent, with the occasional release from an acclaimed act. The label will also host branded parties, kicking things off with a weekly party at Ushuaia Tower in Ibiza starting Monday, June 10th. The threetrack inaugural EP from Guti looks to be a monster release featuring vocals full of soul and beats full of jazzy grooves. The EP is set to release June 3rd.

Australian duo Vandalism return with their latest electro house outing “Anywhere Else Tonight,” this time handing over the remix reigns to Dirt Cheap for a dubbed out electro house rendition. Born in dark and dreary clubs, Dirt Cheap eviscerate the mix, letting the original melody peek through only briefly before dousing it in a sea of sawtooth growls and rib cracking percussion. If you are looking for some of that down and dirty, warehouse ready, circa 2009 electro then look no further, this one is certifiably filthy.

Mackenzie Johnson – MAKJ for short – has continued on his production tear with his latest original “Hold Up.” After remixing Robbie Rivera's “Jump” in late April, MAKJ returns to the Juicy Music imprint packing a one-two punch of big room bliss. Crisp kicks and a blaring horn section march side by side to deliver a gut-wrenching and percussion-centric break that eschews melodic chordplay for aggressive electro elements. “Hold Up” further re-affirms the up-and-coming producer's promise as the 2013 summer and festival season heat up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkUw69W_8Wg

To celebrate Toolroom Record's 10-year anniversary, Digitalism have set out to remix “Truth” from British indie pop sensations Bloc Party. The duo's knack for eclectic and interesting electro productions does well to transform “Truth” into a radio-friendly, yet dance-able outing with little compromise to the original's endearing vocals. A steady four-to-the-floor beat drives the production along while robust and intricately layered synthesizers morph the indie vibes into something more suitable for a dance floor, representing yet another sound release from the dance music mainstays.

Ashley Pope and Tomek Naden, better known as NAPT, take on The Knocks' latest indie dance release “Modern Hearts” with a hearty helping of disco funk. Warping the original into something nearly unrecognizable, the Londonbased duo use The Knocks' vocal cut to piece together a robo-coated groover. Bringing together disco guitar licks, humming synthesis and punchy kicks and claps, NAPT's take on “Modern Hearts” is genre transcendent and deliciously dance-able. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo6xeH3ykCk

Though ASOT 600 feels like ages ago, every new release of a track premiered on The Expedition brings the memories right back. One such tune is KhoMha's remix of'Cosmic Gates “Storm Chaser,” which ASOT 600 NYC attendees heard played out for the first time by none other than Markus Schulz and Ferry Corsten in their first stadium appearance as New World Punx. KhoMha played up the bassline on his remix, stripping out layers of the melody and leaving only a well-crafted teched-out intensity in its place. Proving KhoMha as one to watch, his remix can be purchased as part of “Storm Chasers” remix EP on Beatport.

While their rambunctious touring life is well known, 'Krewellas releases have simultaneously garnered massive attention from fellow producers. Their iconic single “Alive” has impressively managed to stay relevant despite being released ten months ago. After receiving countless remixes and reaching the top of Billboard's Dance/Mix Show airplay chart, it's safe to say “Alive” has reached the pinnacle of success. For what is being deemed 'the final' remix, beloved mainstage talent Hardwell has lent his big room production abilities to the pervasive single. Craig Williams has certainly taken an unconventional career route to reach Dim Mak Records. After spending nine years as a Blackhawk helicopter crewman for the Australian Defence Force in such far-flung locales as Pakistan and East Timor, the Los Angeles transplant has made his debut on Steve Aoki's imprint with a thumping electro house original. “So Shake” is driven by an eponymous vocal sample stuttered and contorted over a tight electro bass through an organ-heavy breakdown into a throbbing build.
