FROM MY VIEWPOINT

Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce president & ceo Ken Moore

Message FROM the president

A

t the time I’m writing this, there is a lot of talk about the effects of sequestration on the nation and our state. And rightfully so! There are a lot of unknowns and the unknowns frighten us. At the same time, the Oklahoma Legislature is addressing many issues of importance to our business community….and in a more positive, less combative manner.

The chamber will keep monitoring progress on these and other measures and actively support those that have a positive effect on the business community. To see the Edmond Chamber’s Legislative Agenda, go to www.edmondchamber.com. Locally there will be an election on April 2 to elect a Mayor and a City Council member from Ward 4. We will sponsor a forum for candidates in our office on March 26th from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. With so many positive things going on in Edmond, I encourage you to attend and become better acquainted with those running to lead our city.

Recently the Oklahoma Senate passed Senate Bill 1062 which would replace the states workers compensation system with an administrative system. The bill passed 34-12 with our As always, we thank you Senators, Jolley, Treat and Johnson for your support of the Edmond all voting in favor. Chamber. Additionally there is much Sincerely, discussion about other critical issues such as government reform Ken Moore and pension reform. These are all President & CEO positive discussions which will Edmond Area Chamber of make our state more competitive and address cost saving measures Commerce for the Oklahoma taxpayer.

LEGISLATIVE

PRIORITIES

The Edmond Chamber’s 2013 Legislative Agenda has Business Focus

T

he Edmond Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has adopted a legislative agenda for 2013 that addresses a wide variety of issues important to Edmond and its business community. The number one priority is the Medical Examiner’s Office. Currently without accreditation, the current office in Oklahoma City is outdated and does not adequately serve the needs of the people of Oklahoma. Previous legislatures have authorized the move to Edmond on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma, but funds have not been allocated for the move. Included among the other top priorities are reform of the workers compensation system, government modernization and pension reform. These items are currently being addressed by members of the Oklahoma

legislature. Other areas of emphasis include transportation, funding for education including the Edmond Public Schools, UCO and Oklahoma Christian University and water resources and economic development. “I often refer to our legislative priorities as a “Community Legislative Agenda” because it addresses the needs of our community in both the

private and public sectors and we have broad based support for these initiatives” said Ken Moore, President & CEO of the Edmond Chamber. “We will continue to monitor progress on these priorities and keep our members informed about their progress in the Oklahoma legislature.” The 2013 Legislative Agenda can be found on our web site at www. edmondchamber.com.

SMALL BUSINESS Scoop To celebrate the contributions of Edmond small businesses, the Edmond Chamber will be hosting the first annual Small Business Week celebration May 20-26.

S

mall Business Week is a time to celebrate small business owners, supporters and entrepreneurs. The event will be divided into three days. Each day will offer those within Edmond’s small business industry an opportunity to make new connections, celebrate the success of local small businesses, continue their education and gain inspiration to better themselves.

The impact of small businesses is not to be understated. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. The Edmond Chamber takes great pride in the fact that 95% of our members are small businesses. Small businesses, and the entrepreneurial spirit that encompasses them, add diversity

and value to our community. We invite all Edmond residents to join us in celebrating the businesses who contribute so much to our city’s economy during Small Business Week 2013. For more details on all of the Small Business Week activities, please visit www.edmondchamber. com and keep an eye in your inbox for emails from the Edmond Chamber.

“Small business owners in and around Edmond are going to be excited over the Small Business Week activities that the Edmond Chamber of Commerce has planned. It kicks off with a Business After Hours where Oklahoma Lt. Governor Todd Lamb will give us the latest update on small business activity around the state. The workshop and breakout sessions scheduled for Thursday, May 23 will be the pinnacle of the week dedicated to small business. Everything about that day is designated to not only small business but locally owned small businesses. It was planned by local people, has local speakers and the topics will be locally focused. The information available and presented will be real time information that applies to local businesses. We hope businesses will bring staff members as well to help build that all-important team spirit within their organization.”

CHAMBER’S OLDEST MEMBERS Which of the Edmond Chamber’s members have been with us the longest? This section will highlight a business who has been a loyal member for many years.

F

ounded in 1976, Reid Printing has been a valued member of the Edmond community for over 37 years. When LaVerna Reid moved here in 1966 with her husband, she knew Edmond was home. Although she was one of the few women in the printing business at the time, LaVerna was not intimidated by her male counterparts. She attended many conferences to learn the ins and outs of the

printing business. “I had the ability, just not the skills yet,” Laverna remarked. As her skills grew, so did her business. In the beginning, Reid Printing specialized in low-paying government print jobs. But in a few short years the business grew and now Reid Printing provides both digital and offset quick printing to number of businesses, churches, schools, and families.

LaVerna recalls the early days of the company, when still was working as a Medical Technician at Presbyterian Hospital during the day and keeping the books and proofreading for the printing company at night.

“I hated to see our children grow up not having anything to do,” said LaVerna. So once her sons were old enough, they went to work in the store. for Reid Printing to invest in our local Chamber of Commerce,” she said. “I believe a strong Chamber is vital to attracting new businesses and residents. A viable Chamber shows there is community support and interest in serving the needs of businesses.” With numerous changes in the printing industry over the past 30 years, Reid Printing has always found ways to adapt. Offering continued educational and training opportunities to their employees has allowed them to change with the times and stay ahead of the game.

LaVerna attributes the success they have enjoyed to the emphasis they put on personal customer service. The personal touch of having a real voice on the other end of the phone, knowledgeable personnel, and employees who take pride in providing high quality printing, makes Reid Printing stand out among many of today’s printing service providers. LaVerna served on the Chamber Board of Directors for two terms and served on the Small Business Council for over 20 years, as well as several other committees.

“Edmond Chamber members are very supportive of each other, and I think that’s what makes our Chamber special,” she said.

And we believe its members like LaVerna Reid who make our Chamber so special.

BE HELPFUL - links to local and area nonprofits, places to volunteer 4. BE MOBILE - links to bus & bike routes, driver license information driving schools, ODOT 5. BE CONNECTED - links to city services, recreation, special events 6. BE HEALTHY - links to clinics, hospitals, health education, prevention resources

Currently EFC is focusing its attention on the special needs of teens and young adults. Through using technology, they hope to connect to teens on their level. Because most teens interact with the community through their phones, they are launching a mobile app called BeEdmond designed to connect teens and young adults to a variety of resources. The goal of BeEdmond is to empower youth and encourage them to get connected to community resources.

The 6 sections of the app will connect teens to community resources and partners that are ready to provide answers and support. BE SAFE, BE SMART, BE HELPFUL, BE MOBILE, BE CONNECTED, and BE HEALTHY are all designed to assist teens and to bridge the gap between isolation and success. “It’s about creating a new way for teens to connect and ending the isolation many suburban teenagers feel.” said Kathy Matthews, Communications & Development Coordinator.

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 14 percent of Oklahoma high school students have seriously considered attempting suicide and 6 percent attempted suicide one or more times in the past year. “We want to connect teens with support close to home” Matthews said. BeEdmond is using a variety of communication channels to reach out to the Edmond community, including a moving PSA, Facebook page and Twitter account. Using Edmond leaders such as Ty Hensley and Mayor Charles Lamb, the video encourages viewers to “Be Edmond”. They hope to develop the mobile app over the summer and have it available to Edmond youth in the fall. To help make a difference in the lives of Edmond teens and be a part of “The Hive”, a community coalition to fund this program, visit www.beedmond.com.

T

his year, Edmond Young Professionals will focus their time and energy on making less fortunate children in Edmond feel special. Through their community service partnership with U R Special Ministries, EYP will fulfill their goal to shape and impact the lives of Edmond residents in meaningful ways. Started in 1993 by three Edmond women, U R Special Ministries, Inc. exists to foster selfesteem and healthy lifestyles in needy and at-risk children. They do so by providing new, one-of-

a-kind clothing for the children of Edmond. U R Special board member Lori Wohl said she didn’t realize there was such a need for this type of an organization in Edmond before volunteering at a clothing distribution day. “My favorite part is seeing the children’s faces light up when they receive their new clothing,” Wohl said. “Hearing them tell you how fast they will be able to run in their new Nikes,” makes Wohl feel lucky to be a part of the organization. 800 Edmond children at three distribution days throughout the year. With the help of over 75 volunteer seamstresses, a number of helpful merchants and civic organizations, as well as a grant from the City of Edmond, they offer each child positive opportunities to make choices, to interact with attentive adults, and to have some fun as they select their new clothing, shoes, and coats. EYP is excited to partner with an organization that makes such a positive impact on the Edmond community. They will volunteer their time helping with distribution, shopping for new clothes and conducting a fundraiser. Both parties are hoping the partnership will bring new ideas and fresh fund-raising concepts to the organization in an effort to positively impact the lives of more Edmond children.
