Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce

Those were just a couple of questions that arose during our annual board planning session. As a result of those discussions, one of the Chamber’s top priorities for 2014 is Developing Next Generation Leaders. Several years ago, the Chamber started Leadership Edmond, now in its 29th year. Our Youth Leadership Edmond was established, with the support of the Edmond Public Schools, 13 years ago. In 2008, we started our dynamic Edmond Young Professionals program in an attempt to keep the best and the brightest in Edmond and in Oklahoma. This year we will launch a new program called Intern Edmond in cooperation with UCO and Oklahoma Christian University. This is yet another program designed to identify bright, young talent to gain experience and perhaps long-term employment in the Edmond business community.

EYP is also expanding its programs to include a new program for young professionals seeking a mentor. This mentorship program will be kicking off this spring. Each of these programs in some way helps our future leaders learn more about our community, provides professional development opportunities and expands leadership skills that can be used in the workplace. Read more about all of our new programs on page 20. We hope you are looking to the future and are taking advantage of the programs and activities the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce offers that can help you develop the next generation leaders in your business. Our new website will provide you with detailed information on all of our new and existing programs. Thank you for your continued support of the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce. Meet An AMBASSADOR

Originally from: Born in Durant, Mississippi but raised in Oklahoma In Edmond Area Since: 2003 Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism/Public Relations from the University of Oklahoma Family: One son, who attends Edmond Santa Fe High School

What is your Favorite thing about being an Ambassador? A: The networking opportunities and the connections you make from them are phenomenal. My favorite thing is going to events and people who have seen my face from some chamber function, greeting me like we’ve been friends forever. What is the biggest advantage of joining the Edmond Chamber? A: Name recognition and fostering new relationships for my business is key. Getting out in the community on behalf of the Chamber has allowed me to make the necessary connections I need amongst my peers to the point where they now feel comfortable in sending new business my way.

A: When people ask me about Edmond, the first thing I brag on is the school system. What is your favorite chamber event?

A: My favorite event is the Chamber’s Auction. The people that help put this event together put in a lot of hard work into making sure chamber members really have a fun night. It’s also nice knowing that doing my part really helps sustain a vital piece to our community, the Chamber. Why would you recommend being an ambassador?

A: It’s all about grass roots. You have to plant some seeds in order for your business to grow. Who would you like to play you in a movie about your life? A: My twin of course, Halle Berry! Or Beyonce. I could pass for either of them it’s just a matter of changing my hair.

It should come as no surprise that educational funding comprises three of our top four priorities in our 2014 Legislative Agenda. “It was unanimous that education should move to the top of our list of priorities. The Edmond Public Schools, UCO and Oklahoma Christian play such an important role in the fabric of our community and their needs for adequate funding to continue to provide a quality educational experience is critical to their long term success,” said Chamber President & CEO Ken Moore. “With the Oklahoma Legislature facing

a possible $188 million shortfall, competition for funds from the state legislature will be intense.” “We are pleased the Chamber has adopted public school funding as a legislative priority,” said Dr. David Goin, Superintendent of Edmond Public Schools. “Growing Oklahoma’s economy and overall quality of life are appropriate state and local goals, and a key component in achieving quality growth is the provision of a solid PK-12 educational system. Funding should be sufficient for Oklahoma, and Edmond in

particular, to ‘be in the game’ with surrounding states with whom we are competing to secure a quality work force.” Your help in contacting our legislative leaders will be critical if we are able to secure funding levels needed for both common and higher education. A complete list of our legislators can be found on the Chamber’s website. The 2014 Legislative Agenda can be found on our website at edmondchamber.com .

The Chamber recognizes the important role nonprofit organizations play in our community. This section highlights the efforts of those working to make Edmond a better place to live, work and grow.

T

he Meadows Center for Opportunity provides data destruction, paper shredding, promotional product packaging and many other business services. But the most significant thing the Meadows provides is hope. Since 1982, the Meadows has provided employment and vocational training to adults with intellectual challenges. Furthermore, it has provided these individuals with the opportunity to work, socialize and focus on a positive future.

With a full-time staff of 15, the Meadows seeks to provide each of their 44 employees the training and opportunity necessary to realize his or her full employment potential. “We’re privileged to work with them,” said Executive Director James Hill, “they’re our friends.” Though it doesn’t have a large donor base, the Meadows is completely debt-free and seeks to be self-sufficient. They shred approximately 4 million pounds of paper a year, so it is no surprise nearly 70 percent of their income

is derived from document destruction. The organization is wisely looking ahead at what their business might look like as we transition into a more paperless society. Through strategic planning with their Board of Directors, they are looking to sustain their success and are open to growing their business in other areas. James said he’s grateful for the opportunity to work at the Meadows. “Walking in everyday and seeing the faces of my guys, you could be struggling with whatever but they make you feel like a rock star,” he said. For over three decades, the Meadows has served the Edmond community and offered business services to over 3,000 customers statewide.

In this time they have also played a significant role in the lives of the hundreds of families who have loved ones with intellectual disabilities. Through donations, the Meadows is able to continue to change countless lives. Held in October, their annual Walk-A-Thon is an opportunity for individuals and businesses to show support for the brave men and women the organization employs. If you are interested in getting involved in the 2014 Walk-A-Thon, call (405) 348-4470. “Our workers here work,” said James. “They’re productive citizens just like everyone else.” Though many of these individuals are facing a wide variety of intellectual and physical challenges, their job at the Meadows has given them an identity they can be proud of. And although his title is Executive Director, when asked about his job James simply replied, “I work for them.” For more information about The Meadows visit www. meadowsoklahoma.com.

A LOOK INSIDE EYP 2014 EYP Chair Bob Ault shares his insights on the organization and his goals for its future.

Q

Q

Q

It’s a great way to keep in the know about what’s going on in Edmond and network with top young professionals from numerous industries in the metro. EYP has many of our community’s next up and coming leaders, and they are all building relationships now that will help serve our community for years to come.

EYP has evolved from primarily a networking focused group to a full service professional development opportunity for individuals who are motivated to continuously improve their careers and professional lives. It has become one of the most well-positioned mediums through which individuals can become engaged with other young professionals in the area.

The two events I enjoy most are our Fall Figure Head Forum and our bi-monthly Leadership Latte events. Both of these events are extremely high quality and provide me access to leaders I would not normally get to interact with.

Why have you believed in being active in EYP?

Q

How has EYP affected your career path and personal network?

Mission: exchange ideas, interact socially and share a common interest in order to position themselves as Edmond’s leaders of today and tomorrow for the betterment of our community.

Edmond

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

EYP has had a significant impact on both my career path and my personal network. Over the last six years I have had the opportunity to interact with some of the best and brightest that Edmond and the metro have to offer. I can honestly say that I have had numerous job offerings from contacts I made from EYP. Moreover, the exposure I had to other career fields provided me with the network I needed to make an industry transition for my latest position.

How has EYP evolved since its creation 6 years ago?

Q

What do you plan to accomplish in your term as chairman of EYP? I hope to develop opportunities to identify a new crop of young professionals to get plugged into leadership positions within our organization. It will also be important for our leadership group to continuously evaluate our programs to make sure that we remain relevant to our membership. To that end, I hope to paint a better picture of the value we provide to young professionals and to the Edmond community.

What are your favorite EYP events to attend?

Q

What goals do you have for the future of the organization? I hope that this year we grow to have EYP members from every major organization in our community. We will also strive to re-launch a meaningful mentorship program for our EYP members. In the long run, it is my hope that our organization is known as the place to find our community’s top professional talent. I hope our organization helps facilitate the development of a community that engages young professionals and provides incentives and opportunities for them to stay here over the course of career.

TOTAL RESOURCE CAMPAIGN

t

he Edmond Chamber of Commerce began running a Total Resource Campaign in 2008 and we haven’t looked back since. Each year, the campaign kicks off in February and ends with a victory celebration in May. In its first year, the TRC brought in $190,000. Last year, the campaign exceeded its goal of $225,000 with record-breaking sales of $286,000. “Since we began the TRC program seven years ago, we have managed to exceed our financial goal each year,” said Sherry Jordan, Vice President and CFO of the Edmond Chamber of Commerce. Now in its seventh year, the TRC campaign accounts for over 30 percent of the Chamber’s annual budget. “This is a huge help for our staff,” said Jordan. “Having the sponsorships already sold ahead of time allows for them to focus on their specific event or program knowing that the sponsorship dollars associated with it have already been accounted for.”

The Chamber can attribute much of the success of the program to its active volunteers. Volunteers have the opportunity to network with each other and meet key decision makers in the community while selling sponsorships to Chamber events, advertisements in Chamber publications and new memberships. Volunteers are given cash incentives for selling sponsorships, with the top earners winning a trip to a tropical location.

While the volunteers’ main focus is selling sponsorships, the work they do goes well beyond basic fundraising. These members are able to share with the community how the Chamber strives to make Edmond a better place to live, work and do business. “Without our volunteers none of this would be possible,” said Ken

Moore, President and CEO of the Edmond Chamber of Commerce. “Their hard work and dedication exceed my expectations year after year.”

NEW PROGRAMS This year the Chamber unveiled three new programs to support the needs of our small business members and develop the next generation of leaders in our community.

EDMOND LOCALLY OWNED

EYP MENTORSHIP Program

L

ocally owned Chamber members will soon have the opportunity to become certified as a locally owned business. This program will encourage local residents to buy and shop at businesses owned by Edmond citizens. Those participating must meet specific criteria and attend at least one seminar in order to become certified as a locally owned company. This program is anticipated to launch during Small Business Week 2014. For more information about this program, contact Brooke Roshell, at broshell@edmondchamber.com.

Y

oung professionals interested in the opportunity to connect with experienced professionals in the area now have that chance. Edmond Young Professionals is launching a new mentorship program. The program kicks off May 14 and runs through September of 2014. There will be three formal program sessions hosted at the Edmond Chamber, but all other meetings will be scheduled between the mentor and mentee. If you are a young professional looking for a mentor to turn to with tough professional questions, this program is for you. If you are interested in this program, contact Morgan Boswell at mboswell@edmondchamber.com.

INTERN EDMOND

i

ntern Edmond is a new initiative of the Edmond Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Christian University. The objective will be to provide a seamless process where Edmond businesses can gain access to students at both universities who are seeking internships. The Chamber will host a briefing for interested employers in April to outline the program and answer questions that many companies have about internships. If your business is interested in hiring an intern, contact Rachel Martin at rmartin@edmondchamber.com.

Fun on the Fairway Edmond Chamber’s Annual Golf Tournament is on the horizon.

F

ore! The 2014 annual Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, May 2, 2014 at Fairfax Golf Course. This fun-filled event allows for great networking and promotional opportunities for Chamber members. If you are interested in playing in the tournament, there are still a few spots available for teams of four. Act quickly as these will fill up soon! Volunteers are needed on the day of the tournament for a variety of tasks. If you don’t play golf but would still like to be involved in this event, this is your opportunity! Don’t miss this chance to spend a day on the greens with good friends, food and prizes. Also available is the opportunity to promote your business to fellow Edmond business men and women by donating raffle items. We need your help to make this golf tournament our best one yet. If you would like more information on playing in the tournament, volunteering or donating raffle prizes, please contact Morgan Boswell at mboswell@edmondchamber.com or by phone at 405341-2808.
