A NOTE FROM THE CEO
The past couple of years have shifted our focus to become more aware of the needs within our community that have helped connect us in ways unlike ever before. As Edmond continues to grow, fellow Edmond citizens have begun reaching out to help support one another, volunteer their time and efforts into creating a more prosperous community.
In this issue, we are recognizing a few of Edmond’s local nonprofits and charity organizations that have come together to share one common goal, to help the Edmond community thrive. Local nonprofits and charity organizations make a difference in so many lives and touch all walks of society, particularly the disadvantaged, vulnerable, and under-served. For charity organizations not directly related to emergency relief, the impact of the coronavirus was felt not only in the short term but in the long run as well. Thankfully,
the nonprofit world does exist to help people overcome barriers and obstacles, meet challenges, survive, and ultimately thrive.
We encourage you, as your Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce, to find ways to serve this community by reaching out to the local nonprofit organizations and asking how you can help. They rely heavily on volunteers, donors, and other partners to advocate for their cause. We promise that the benefits to your community will be profound and supporting the groups you care about will result in lasting socio-economic change.

President & CEOLOCAL NONPROFITS AND HOW THEY HELP OUR COMMUNITY
Ministries of Jesus
Ministries of Jesus began as an answered prayer to a team of church members at Henderson Hills Baptist Church. They opened the doors to their medical clinic in 2001 and have been providing healthcare services to patients that do not have public or private-third party medical coverage and whose personal resources are insufficient to provide their needed healthcare. Christian medical professionals from the community volunteer their time, talent, and resources to help others in need. Those who come to Ministries of Jesus for medical appointments include people with various religious beliefs, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

Turning Point Ministries
Turning Point Ministries is a faith-based ministry that helps modest income families who work and serve in the Edmond community, become homeowners in the Edmond community. The seeds for Turning Point were planted in the early 90’s when a group of members from First Presbyterian Church of Edmond raised money and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in Oklahoma City. As they continued to serve Oklahoma City residents, additional Edmond churches joined them. Many of those involved wanted to continue to help provide affordable housing, but they saw a need in Edmond. They built 5 houses with the help of Habitat for Humanity, and then began Turning Point Ministries in 2008 to serve modest income families here in Edmond. Bob Turner, Dick Freeman and John Gruel were founding members of Turning Point Ministries.
In 2005, Ministries of Jesus added counseling services, and has been providing counseling to clients in a caring and confidential setting by licensed professional counselors committed to bringing Christian principles from a Christ-centered world-view into the therapeutic experience. Counseling is available for anyone, regardless of ability to pay and clients of all faiths are welcome to receive counseling at Ministries of Jesus.
In 2009, they added the dental clinic and have since gone on to add addiction recovery and assistance with social services and providing clients with referrals to community resources, such as housing, food, clothing, financial and legal aid.
Turning Point Ministries wants their homeowners to have the benefit of a community, so rather than build individual homes in a variety of locations, they develop neighborhoods. The neighborhoods have a Home Community Association (HCA) which is run by Turning Point Ministries until the neighborhood is completed and the homeowners become responsible for the management of the HCA.
Turnning Point Ministries mentors their clients through the home buying process, so they are well prepared when their home is complete and it is time to make the down payment and assume the mortgage. Their home buying journey begins with an application. Qualifying candidates must have a willingness to work through our process which includes: contributing sweat equity on the construction site, maintaining a relationship with a Turning Point mentor, and attending home buying and personal finance classes. Additionally, they commit to make a positive contribution to the safe and drug-free community.

Peaceful Family Oklahoma
Peaceful Family Oklahoma was founded to help provide healing and hope to the most overlooked, vulnerable victims of addiction – children. To help save and protect the futures of children impacted by addiction, Peaceful Family Oklahoma provides a free, proven, evidence-based program addressing the heavy burden that substance use disorder (SUD) lays on the children of those in treatment, in active addiction or living in recovery.
Their peer-to-peer curriculum was developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and is offered in Los Angeles and Denver.
Peaceful Family Oklahoma is the only organization in our state that offers these targeted, proven services for children of parents struggling with the disease of addiction.
Today, more than 420 graduates of the Peaceful Family Oklahoma program are living happier lives, equipped with the coping skills needed to enjoy their childhoods and armed with the education required to avoid drugs and alcohol and other harmful behaviors.

Volunteering in the Edmond Community
Volunteering encompasses more than simply helping others, it means dedicating your time to willingly help improve lives and support your community. First and foremost, volunteering helps members of your community obtain experiences, skills, and benefits that they might not have had access to otherwise. It gives you a way to make a differences in the lives of others and in your own life.
Thinking of Volunteering? Edmond is home to many local nonprofits and social agencies. The City of Edmond has dedicated resources to helping you get involved. If you would like to learn more about volunteer opportunities in Edmond, visit www.edmondok. gov/1623/Volunteering-in-Edmond.
Together, we can make a difference in our community. We encourage you as a resident of Edmond to get involved and lend a helping hand. We promise you will be changed by your experience.
Their program breaks the cycle of addiction through therapeutic play, artwork, recreation, and games. Under the guidance of trained, masters level professionals, children learn:
• that their parent’s substance use disorder is a disease and is not their fault
• how to safely explore and share their feelings
• how to begin healing from their pain
• how to stay safe in hard times
• to develop a self-care plan

CYCLE 66 CELEBRATES ROUTE 66 ON NOVEMBER 6
CYCLE 66 BICYCLING TOUR ALONG ROUTE 66
After a successful inaugural event in November 2021, Cycle 66, Edmond’s urban/rural bicycling tour along Route 66, is returning for a second year, this time with the addition of a criterium race. The route begins and ends in downtown Edmond, which is home to 13.4 miles of the historic Route 66 and boasts the most drivable and ridable miles in the country.
This year’s event will take place on Sunday, November 6th at 8:00am. Bicycle riders from across the nation can come to Edmond to enjoy three bicycle routes, including the 10-mile route, 33-mile route, and the 66-mile route. Cycle 66 will also be hosting the inaugural kid’s 1-mile route for kids of all ages.
Riders can register online for $40 Kids 12 and under are $10.
In 2021, its inaugural year, the event featured three different routes and enjoyed 550 registrations from across eight different states, which shattered expectations.
Twenty-six local passionate and experienced cyclists are currently serving as Cycle 66 Ride Ambassadors. They receive free registration and a custom Cycle 66 jersey in exchange for promoting the event to fellow cyclists. “Ambassadors will tell the Cycle 66 story: We aim to promote healthy, active lifestyles in Edmond,
re-imagine the tourism potential of Route 66 for a new generation and give back to local charities,” said Cycle 66 Ambassador Brian Fairless.
Cycle 66 Powered by OU Health today announced the addition of a fast-paced, closed-course criterium in downtown Edmond. The “Crit @ Cycle 66”, an amateur cyclocross race sanctioned by USA Cycling, will share a finish line with its three existing distance rides.
OKC Velo – Bike Lab Club, a non-profit led by Tony Steward, has partnered with Cycle 66, Inc., to organize the Crit portion of the event.
“We were so impressed with the first year of Cycle 66 and the support it received from the City of Edmond,” Steward said. “As a cycling non-profit we are thrilled to jump in and create a fun racing experience for local amateur athletes. This will bring the excitement of bicycle racing straight into downtown Edmond as a wonderful addition to Celebration 66 on 1st and Broadway.”
A criterium, or crit, is a bicycle race of a specified number of laps on a closed course over public roads closed to normal traffic. Crit cyclists often reach speeds more than 25 mph as they race through the circuit, skillfully avoiding other riders.
“We expect thousands of visitors to dine and shop at local downtown Edmond businesses while cheering on racers during the Crit @ Cycle 66,” said Jennifer Seaton, Edmond Tourism Director and Cycle 66 board chair. Last year, bike riders and their supporters enjoyed a free finish line festival called Celebration 66. Now in our second year, Celebration 66 will offer even more excitement throughout the day to applaud cyclists while enjoying ‘streeteries,’ music and a host of pop up vendors, Seaton said.
“The kids’ ride helps fulfill our mission to promote healthy, active lifestyles in our community,” said Jason Duncan, Cycle 66 ride director. “We know that cycling has all kinds of benefits for kids’ health, from cardiovascular fitness to emotional wellness and stress relief. What better way to build our future?”
The Routes
Cycle 66 offers a ride for everyone, from amateurs to competitors. All four routes will be fully supported with plentiful support and gear, relief wagons, signage, rest stops, first aid stations and critical traffic control.
1-Mile Kids’ Route: Kids of all ages are welcome to join Cycle 66 on its inaugural 1-mile Kids’ Route. Training wheels, tricycles and strollers are welcome! We encour age kids to decorate their rides-of-choice and come ready for fun.
10-Mile Route: This leisurely group ride, best for families and recreational riders, will be led and trailed by expe rienced riders who will keep the group together and on the right path. The route showcases downtown Edmond, notable public art, the University of Central Oklahoma campus, and the community’s best parks and bike paths.
33-Mile Intermediate Route: This moderate ride is best for intermediate and recreational riders who like a challenge. It begins in Edmond then dips south to the State Capitol. Riders will enjoy the “Party at the Turn” powered by OU Health before cycling back to downtown Edmond.
66-Mile Advanced Route: This adventurous ride is for advanced and intermediate riders looking to push the distance. It travels through five communities including
Edmond, Oklahoma City, Jones, Luther and Arcadia, and features the nostalgia and thrill of the Mother Road up close and personal. The route will be in reverse from last year, and will take advantage of beautiful Katy Trail near I-44 and NE Grand Ave.
Charitable Beneficiaries
Cycle 66 is governed by Cycle 66, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, in partnership with the City of Edmond, the State of Oklahoma, Visit Edmond and title sponsor OU Health, and all Route 66 stakeholders.
A portion of event proceeds will benefit Autumn Life Behavioral Health Center, a dedicated geriatric psychi atry inpatient program at OU Health Edmond Medical Center that addresses the unique needs of mature adults ages 55 and up. Other proceeds will benefit the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and preserving Route 66 statewide.
