The Voice for Business. First and foremost, the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce exists to unite the voice of the Edmond business community. We stand with businesses from every corner of the city and work every day to be an advocate for growth and progress. We understand that to have a strong economic environment you must have a strong community. We also understand that communities are only as strong as the people who make them. We are fortunate to work with incredibly capable state legislators, city officials, non-profits and community members who care about our future. It's an honor to come to work everyday with the intention of making Edmond even better than it was yesterday. We are an active chamber that works hard to advance our members' growth, both personally and professionally. We do this by providing a variety of networking, advertising, educational and social opportunities over the course of the calendar year. I'm proud to report that the value provided by the Edmond Chamber has never been stronger. Our community is an extraordinary place to live and an excellent place to do business. I want to encourage you to become active in our community and in the Edmond Chamber. Sincerely,

Sherry Jordan President and CEO

Raising the Barre. by: Kristen Morgan, Chamber Intern

For the past year, The Body Barre has been bringing fun and energy back to group fitness. Owner Heather Ehlers offers an array of classes that coordinate low-impact movements into high-intensity workouts. Along with Barre, she offers yoga, HEAT, DanceWerk, Piyo and Body Sculpt classes. At the end of the day, she wants to help everyone who walks into the studio become the best version of themselves. “If it doesn’t challenge you it won’t change you,” Heather says is the motto she lives by. As a hairstylist of 22 years, she loves people. “I love helping them in any way I can…I enjoy forming new relationships and friendships through this process.” She grew up watching her parents run one of the most successful salons in the OKC metro, which is how she says she learned about business and the importance of customer service. While Heather continues to be a hairstylist part-time, she decided to open The Body Barre to give the Edmond community a place to find their belonging and improve themselves mentally and physically. The studio is an environment where someone at any fitness level can flourish without feeling intimidated. Since opening in June 2018, The Body Barre has seen remarkable growth. They’ve hosted “Goat Yoga” to raise money for Deer Creek High School and have hosted outdoor yoga classes for the community. They plan to continue welcoming new faces and supporting the community as much as possible. To follow their journey, find The Body Barre on Instagram (@thebodybarreok) or visit thebodybarreok.com. The Chamber, Explained. "What does the chamber do?" This is a question that every chamber staff person hears on a consistent basis and one that the Edmond Chamber is happy to answer.

ever-changing. The chamber exists to give its members a leg up.

Chambers connect people.

It may sound a little cheesy, but when businesses get plugged into their local chamber, it becomes like family. Getting to know new people in any city is intimidating but the chamber helps facilitate those introductions. Members can attend events and programs knowing they share something in common with other attendees: the desire to grow their business and be a part of the city in which they operate.

It doesn't matter what business you're in, you need business. No one succeeds without the help of others and no one understands that better than the local chamber. Face-to-face communication will always be better than any social media platform, count on that. With nearly 1,000 members, the Edmond Chamber can connect its members with just about anyone.

Chambers are a resource. With programs like Edmond Young Professionals and events including quarterly tech workshops and women's network breakfasts, the chamber is here to equip its members with everything they need to excel. Between the chamber staff, board, ambassadors and members, the information and experience available is limitless. The business world is competitive and

Chambers are a community.

Chambers work. The Edmond Chamber has operated for more than 112 years and has enough success stories to fill this magazine from cover to cover. Members of the Edmond Chamber can rest easy knowing their chamber is committed to making Edmond a businessfriendly city, while enhancing the quality of life. When Edmond businesses succeed, the city succeeds.

Rolling Forward. When Henry Holasek bought Al’s Bicycles in 1986, he didn’t know much about the industry. At the time, he was working as a petroleum engineer, but when the industry weakened he decided it was time to find something else. He was overwhelmed at first, but after working long hours (and with a lot of help from Al) he learned the ropes. Now, more than three decades later, Holasek is looking forward to the future of Al’s Bicycles. There are three Al's Bicycles locations in the metro, all individually owned. Founded by Al Webb in 1979, the three shops operate with the same goal in mind – to offer friendly, reliable service and quality brands. Their vast inventory offers far more than bikes. “We’ve got everything from baskets and bells to helmets and trainers,” Holasek says, “anything associated with cycling.” With a dedicated staff and decades of knowledge, any rider is sure to find what

11

they’re looking for at Al’s.

In addition to inventory, they offer a full service department that is ready to repair anything, whether it involves tightening loose bolts or fixing a flat. “Anything that you can drag, carry or ride in, we can fix,” Holasek guarantees. They also provide free tune-ups for life to anyone who purchases a bike from their shop, which is a nice perk considering tune-ups are generally required twice a year. Holasek knows small businesses can only thrive with excellent customer service. He attributes the shop’s success to hard work and great customers. “I’ve sold customers bikes when they were four years old and then they come carrying their kids in to buy bikes for them… that kind of gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling.”

Experience the charm of Al's Bicycles every Monday-Saturday. Visit alsbicycles.com for more information.

Lively Living Keep it moving, Edmond.

Communities designed to encourage active lifestyles reap the benefits of their citizens' overall health and well-being. Edmond shines bright as a community that values leading a lively routine. Edmond is stepping up their game in every arena of health. Here’s the best way to take advantage of all of Edmond’s amenities. Ride City Councilman Darrell Davis' primary mode of transportation was his bicycle when he lived in Atlanta. Now in Edmond, his bike is used for long distance, endurance rides. Edmond isn't historically known as a bike-friendly city but Davis, along with several of his fellow city councilmen, are working to change that. They've implemented bike lanes, wider multi-use trails, reverse parking and have increased biker awareness over the years. "Edmond is learning and adapting to other modes of transportation — it wasn't before," Davis said. Perhaps one of the council's greatest accomplishments is the opening of Spring Creek Trail near Arcadia Lake. The 3.1-mile-long pathway is eighteen feet wide with dedicated lanes for both cycling and running/walking. City Councilman Nick Massey has the

same goal in mind for Edmond. "I hope more people will get involved with cycling and that Edmond will be known as a bicycle-friendly city. It's a great sport and great overall exercise. We all need to share the road and respect one another". Davis says the city has a master plan moving forward that includes more multi-use trails for cyclists. He says the city council will continue to expand on current progress to make ways for Edmond to be more bike and pedestrian friendly. For more information regarding cycling in Edmond, including events and trail maps, visit edmondok.com/955/BicycleEdmond. Explore Arcadia Lake has something for everyone, seriously everyone. In cooler months, campers can enjoy primitive campsites in Central State Park or Scissortail Campground. Each campsite includes a picnic table, utility table, charcoal grill, fire ring and access to community water and restrooms. When it's too chilly for swimming, campers can enjoy surrounding hiking trails, disc golf, horseshoe, equestrian trails, sand volleyball, fishing and more.

of mature trees covering much of the paved paths. Not sure where to get started? The city's Parks and Recreation Department keeps an updated catalog of events and programs for residents to get involved in. Get moving during their Hike'n Brew series which includes a hike in a local park with coffee from a featured artisan. From Fishing 101 to 3D Archery Shooting, the Parks and Rec department keeps it fun all year round.

In the warmer months, residents can take advantage of the sandy swim beaches and water sports. UCO's Outdoor Adventure Recreation (OAR) Center houses kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddle boards and mountain bikes for a small fee. Their friendly staff is available to help visitors get in the water or on the trails.

"We are committed to building upon our trail system with improving trail surfacing throughout the community and current efforts are focused on additional multi-use trails (paved and non-paved) at Arcadia Lake," said Craig Dishman, Director of Parks and Recreation. "Eventually there will be approximately 25 miles of paved trails in the Arcadia Lake area. We are also always looking to connect amenities, neighborhoods, schools, etc. , with a trail. Trail usage is popular in the OKC metro area and we are fortunate to have the financial and public support to do our part." To find more way to live lively in Edmond, visit edmondok.com/337/Parks-Recreation.

Roam Those longing to be outside don't have to look far. Edmond has more than 20 parks to choose from and several offer miles of walking and running trails. Two of the cities most visited parks include Mitch and E.C. Hafer. Mitch Park, located in North Edmond, features five miles of paved multi-use trails, two playgrounds, disc golf, basketball courts, an exercise station, volleyball court, skate park, amphitheatre and an athletic complex. At E.C. Hafer Park, visitors can enjoy some of the same perks as Mitch with the addition of a fishing pond. Each park has an abundance Photo by Marshall Hawkins, Sundance Photography

Blame it On the Boogie. Each September, the Edmond Chamber pairs six local celebrities with six professional dancers to perform at the chamber's largest fundraiser of the year, Edmond's Dancing with the Stars. Hundreds of attendees flood the Edmond Conference Center to see wellknown community members perform anything from disco to Foxtrot. The event pairs local celebrities with professional dancers from Dance Makers, an Edmond-based business teaching ballroom, Latin, country and swing for more than 30 years. The 2019 celebrities included founder and president of RadVine Marketing, Sean Conrad; founder of Precision Vision, Selina McGee, OD; Mercy primary care sports physician and director of sports medicine, Megan Meier, MD; INTRUST bank market president, Tom O'Keefe; client services manager for the Edmond Economic Development Authority, Mallory Stone; and Edmond Police Chief JD Younger.

17

The night was filled with entertainment as all six celebrity dancers took the stage with their partners. The celebrities compete for three awards: People's Choice, Star of the Show and Best Overall. Tom O'Keefe, with professional dancer Kinsey Marshall, took home the People's Choice Award. Their performance included a quickstep, Foxtrot, Linde, Charleston, kick line and a dip. Megan Meier, MD, paired with professional dancer David Elliott, were awarded Best Overall for their disco rendition of Whitney Houston's, "I Will Always Love You."

Finally, Sean Conrad and Natasha AbuFadel were awarded Star of the Show for their two-step performance of "The Git Up" by Blanco Brown. Make plans to join the Edmond Chamber in September 2020 for the 4th Annual Edmond's Dancing with the Stars.

Government Relations. The Edmond Chamber's Government Relations Committee works to represent the legislative interests of business on local, state and national levels. This is done through a variety of efforts including candidate forums, legislative breakfasts, an annual trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with state officials, and in 2019 they held the first-ever Edmond Day at The Capitol. This committee meets monthly to discuss both legislative and local issues that impact the Edmond community. In addition to the Government Relations Committee, the Edmond Chamber develops a legislative agenda to set priority goals relating to issues that directly impact members. The agenda is split into four categories: Federal Issues, Transportation, Education and Economic Growth. The following are the priority items for each: Federal Issues: Provide legislation to ensure a level playing field between community retailers and remote/internet sellers in the collection of all sales and use taxes. Transportation: Expedite funding for transition of access roads on Interstate 35 to a one-way frontage road in order to ease congestion and improve safety taxes. Education: Advance and support strategies for additional funding for the hiring and retention of qualified teachers for PK-16. Hold schools harmless and return Edmond’s public schools’ and the University of Central Oklahoma’s per-pupil funding to FY 08 levels in order to provide dollars necessary to support current operational needs. Economic Growth: Continue to support efforts to review economic incentives authorizing those which provide value to Edmond businesses and terminating those which cost the state funding without providing a means to attract additional businesses taxes.
