Letter from the Publisher Edmond is a great place to live. The last few years have seen many great projects come to life in Edmond. The YMCA and Aquatic Center in Mitch Park, the new Edmond Public Safety Center, Edmond Public School’s improvement in facilities, development of more trails, expanRay Hibbard sion of our Edmond Public Art program and more have all assured that we continue to enjoy a terrific quality of life in Edmond. A thank you to our civic leaders who have great vision and the voting public for approving the funds. Living in Edmond is getting even better. The 2018 year will continue to show completion of many projects in our community. The Hilton Garden Inn and Edmond Conference is now up and running. This will be the site that not only hosts many of our Edmond events but will bring in folks from around the country to enjoy our community. With tourism comes the best kind of increased tax dollars. My friend Steve Kreidler says, “Visitors come into town, spend money and then leave.” It provides funding that helps our outstanding city government provide services to residents. The opening of the new Conference Center will also be the stimulation for growth and further development at I-35 and Covell. The area will now grow with retail development, office space and a state of the art entertainment center for Edmond. It has been a public and private investment which has worked so well for

Edmond over the years. We look for more of these public and private relationships to help our community grow along I-35 in the years to come. This year will also see the ground breaking on yet another medical facility at I-35 and 15th street. The core of Edmond is not forgotten. Downtown Edmond continues to receive investment from private sources with the building and refurbishing of new office and retail space. The downtown area is also being considered for the building of a new performing arts center. This project probably would take the form of partnership with our University of Central Oklahoma, the City of Edmond and a private partner to make it happen. Despite massive budget cuts to higher education, UCO continues to expand and plays a major role in stimulating our Edmond economy. These projects are just examples of the progress going on in Edmond. With so much happening, it is more important than ever that we have a community calendar. Over the last 15 years, it has been our pleasure to provide that calendar of events guide. We thank our advertisers for their support of this important publication and making it possible. As always, a special thank you to our staff. They work hard year-round to gather this information and work with our advertisers to bring you Edmond’s only comprehensive Calendar of Events Guide. Ray Hibbard Publisher Edmond Life & Leisure

A Kaleidoscope of the West Don Reeves, McCasland Chair of Cowboy Culture, concludes his 38 years of Museum service with a talk years in the making. The West can be conceptualized as a beautiful harmony. The individual notes and melodies, like points of light, form a colorful kaleidoscope that is Western Heritage — a heritage influenced by the National Cowboy Museum. Reeves reflects on the collections, ideas, and profound friendships he has made along

his journey, relating stories and memories of the West to reveal a few new, unorthodox views. An ice cream social immediately follows this farewell gathering. $10, $8 members National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum January 24 – 31

When We’re Gone World Premiere In the spirit of Lyric’s hit production, The Who’s Tommy, When We’re Gone is a rock musical that follows Todd, an angst-ridden teen, in plague-ridden, 14th-century London and his desire to make great art in a time of great need. This wildly creative new musical strikes a brilliant balance of modern day characters, a pop-punk score and the life-changing events of 1349. Anyone who has ever wondered what life is all about will be enlightened, entertained and amazed. This musical contains adult language and adolescent themes. Lyric Theatre

Do you See What I See? Painted Conversations by Theodore Waddell Much of what the Museum’s visitors have come to see and expect in experiencing art is largely influenced by the contemporary artists who paint and sculpt the American West in what is considered an expression of “realism.” This exhibition will redirect the visitor’s attention to the importance of what you do not see rather than what you do see on the canvas, and the opportunity to see something different in the same painting each time it is viewed. In the Principles Office: Tom Ryan the Art Student Art is not easy. Even those with natural ability often attend schools and studios to perfect technique and application. Western artist Tom Ryan (1922 – 2011) invested six years and three schools in his education; but what did he study? What was it like at the Art Students League in 1951? His lecture notes and assignments answer these questions and more. Step into the classroom with Ryan as he takes “General Illustration” with famed teacher Frank Reilly. This is not Art History 101.
